Social work Ph.D. salaries are the highest in the District of Columbia, where the average for the seven jobs is nearly $85,000. Not far behind are New Jersey and California, with New York and Rhode Island rounding out the top five. The average wage for the seven social work jobs was lowest in Montana and Oklahoma.

The average national wage for the seven social work jobs we analyzed was about $60,000, and Clinical, Counseling and School Psychologists had the highest average annual wage. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers had the lowest average national wage at just over $49,000.

In every state for which data is available, social work Ph.D. job openings will expand over the next several years. Some states will have very rapid growth, while others will have much less robust expansion rates. Projection data was not available for six states (Alabama, Arizona, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Texas and Washington) for enough social work Ph.D. jobs to create a fair analysis.

On average, Utah has the highest projected growth rate for social work Ph.D. jobs, with openings expected to rise by nearly 30% through 2028. Colorado and New York also are expected to see job growth of almost 25%. Maine’s average growth rate of about 3% is the lowest.

The NASW reports that slightly more than 13 percent of social workers with a master’s plan to earn a doctoral degree —that’s just one percent of the social work labor force. In a field where so many of your peers hold a master’s degree and practice clinical social work , a doctorate can deliver an advantage when you’re competing for social work’s top jobs.

For many years, the PhD was the only social work doctorate worth having. It’s only recently that DSW programs have become more popular.

The primary difference between these degrees is that PhD holders typically pursue social work careers in research or teaching, while a DSW is a professional degree characteristically leading to a career in social work management, administration, and leadership. PhD programs lean more on theoretical and pedagogical approaches to social work. DSW programs also teach theory but focus more on implementation, often in the form of applied research toward practical solutions . Still, DSW holders can become teachers or researchers, and PhD holders can have management or administrative positions.

The time required to complete these degrees constitutes another significant difference. DSW students may only need three years to finish, while PhD candidates may take between five and seven.

There is quite a bit of overlap in terms of degree content . Both offer coursework covering subjects like:

Specialization is common in social work— healthcare social worker and school social worker are just two of many examples of social work specialization. The NASW identifies 16 specializations for the field of social work, though few if any schools offer them all. They are:

Even though DSW programs are becoming more popular , earning a PhD is still the most common way to go. According to the 2017 NASW study, only about one-third of MSWs pursuing a doctorate want to earn a DSW.

Whichever degree you choose , make sure it’s from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program. The CSWE is the social work education governing body that sets education standards; it has approved over 600 programs. Many employers insist on accredited degrees.

A DSW can qualify you for many high-level administrative leadership positions . Administrative leader is a macro-level job, meaning you won’t be working with clients. Instead, you’ll focus on managing those who provide human services. Be prepared to complete tasks like:

Administrative leaders can work in many settings, such as:

• Family services and mental health facilities
• Health centers
• Universities
• Welfare agencies

High-level administrators are among the best paid professionals in social work. According to Salary.com, social work managers earn a median salary of slightly over $93,000—the top ten percent earn more than $117,000 annually. PayScale lists the average social services administrator salary as just under $70,000 per year.

Policy leader

According to the NASW, “A doctoral degree in social work can also equip social workers with the skills necessary for public policy careers , either conducting policy analysis or developing public policy at the state or national level.” They can focus on areas like budgeting or changing and creating laws.

Policy leaders often work for government agencies or at the community level, including social welfare agencies and justice organizations. This is another role where you won’t directly interact with clients but will influence how clinical social workers do.

According to PayScale, the average director of public policy earns close to $85,000 annually—with the top ten percent earning nearly $150,000. Policy analysts earn less , close to $60,000—though the top ten percent of professionals earn $83,000.

While the PhD is considered a research degree, DSWs can certainly work in this field. Often, research becomes one aspect of their career. You may apply research techniques in a social work leadership position or focus on research in academics. One 2019 DSW graduate from New York University , Amy Lemen, took the position of Research Assistant Professor of Neurology and Medicine.

A graduate from the University of Pennsylvania program decided to earn her degree because it would help her “take what I was doing clinically and turn that into research , and then take the results I was getting from my dissertation work and put it into practice.”

There are more readily available data about researchers with an MSW than those with a DSW. According to a 2018 NASW study, indirect social workers, which is a category that includes researchers, earned an average income of $46,500 in that year, which was the most of all social work specializations.

Still, that figure doesn’t tell the whole story—even without adding the extra thousands you can expect to make with a DSW. Much depends on where you work. For instance, government researchers earn an average salary of $113,031 across all disciplines. According to Glassdoor, university researchers earn an average salary of $56,000, but top researchers can earn as much as $103,000.

What you’ll earn in this position comes down to where you work and your education. Having a doctoral degree allows you to earn more and conduct more impactful research.

Social work educator

Educators teach the next batch of social workers and help them earn initial licensure . Teaching social work requires substantial professional experience, which is why an applied degree like a DSW can be useful. Many professionals decide to begin their teaching careers after completing clinical or leadership careers.

Because teaching social work is predicated on professional experience, you don’t even need a doctorate, though it certainly helps. According to one DSW, quoted in the NASW’s 2017 graduates survey, “I would recommend a DSW for those in academia that have taught for a few years and need the doctorate degree to elevate them to the next level.”

Earning a DSW can be a huge boon for your career, but remember, not many social workers pursue doctoral degrees, opting instead to stop after an MSW program. Be selective about the program you attend—even social work programs with the proper accreditation can differ in quality.

Determine what position you want before deciding to earn a DSW. You can easily start an entry-level social work career with just a bachelor’s degree. Starting a private clinical social work practice requires a master’s degree and a few years of experience. You don’t necessarily need a doctorate, though it can help.

• Professional researcher : You may conduct research and analyze data that supports the work of government agencies, the military and research centers.

Social worker employment is expected to grow 13%  from 2019 to 2029, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is much faster than the average of all occupations. While the need for social workers may vary by location and specialization, the BLS reports that some types of social workers are more in demand than others. The top 10% of earners made more than $82,540. Today social work is generally a master’s-level professional field, meaning you need a master’s degree in social work (MSW) to become a social worker. Some states allow you to engage in the practice of social work with a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW), and a few states still permit limited practice with just an associate’s degree in social work (ASW). A doctoral degree in social work (DSW or PhD) opens up the top-tier positions in this field that involve leadership, management, research, teaching, and clinical study.

Salaries tend to increase as you move up to more advanced social work positions, and education is key to opening up these doors for your career. According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) there are approximately 837,200 social workers employed throughout the nation earning an average salary of $59,521 per year.

Associate’s Degree in Social Work (ASW) Salaries

You can find entry-level employment that’s related to social work with an ASW. This could include things like conducting basic intakes and office-related functions at agencies that provide social work services. An ASW is a good first-step towards gaining introductory experience in this field.

People at the ASW-level are not generally considered social workers so there’s not much official data on ASW-holder salaries. These types of jobs are classified in broader categories like clerical and technician.

However good national data from the BLS is available for the social work salaries at the 10th-percentile, a stand-in for entry-level ASW social work jobs. 10 percent of social workers throughout the nation earn $35,008 per year or less.

At the 10th-percentile level, healthcare social workers and social and community service managers earn the highest salaries, coming in at $36,110 and $42,230, respectively. Mental health and substance abuse social workers earn $30,770 at the 10th-percentile. Child, family, and school social workers earn $32,300 at this level.

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) Salaries

In its comprehensive profile of the social work workforce, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) estimated the number of licensed social workers with only a bachelor’s degree was around 350,000. It reported that the average salary for social workers holding a BSW was $38,436.

It followed that report up with a 2020 national survey finding BSW social workers earned an average salary of $44,100. That same survey found 8.6 percent of social workers reported a BSW was a minimum requirement for their job.

The 2017 report also found significant differences in median BSW-holder salaries depending on where a professional worked. For example:

• Outpatient care centers – $32,500
• Administrators of HR programs – $38,000
• Individual and family service agencies – $39,000
• Skilled nursing facilities – $40,000
• Hospitals – $50,000

Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) Salaries

The NASW’s 2017 profile found the average salary for social workers who had a master’s degree was $48,025, nearly $10,000 more than their bachelor’s-only colleagues that year. Its follow-up 2020 survey mirrored this, finding MSW-holders earned $47,800 on average.

The 2017 report also found differences in median salaries by sector as reported by social workers holding a master’s degree or higher. Some examples include:

• Individual and family services – $45,000
• Outpatient care centers – $50,000
• Administrators of HR programs – $51,000
• Hospitals – $56,000
• Elementary and secondary schools – $60,000

The 2020 NASW survey additionally detailed that 78 percent of social workers reported having a social work license or an MSW was a minimum requirement for their job.

BLS data for 2020 finds the median salary for social workers is $55,484. Although this BLS data doesn’t take education level into account, it has a good correlation to the median salaries reported by the NASW above for MSWs.

2020 BLS total employment and median salaries by social work sector are:

• 328,120 child, family, and school social workers – $48,430
• 176,110 healthcare social workers – $57,630
• 155,800 social and community service managers – $69,600
• 116,780 mental health and substance abuse social workers – $48,720

Doctoral Degree in Social Work (DSW or PhD) Salaries

Currently state licensing requirements don’t mandate a doctoral degree in social work, however most accept one as fulfilling the education requirement. When it comes to salary, social workers with the highest degree in their field tend to earn significantly more.

The NASW’s 2017 profile found social workers with a doctoral degree took in an average salary of $60,412. That’s over $21,000 more than their bachelor’s-only colleagues and over $12,000 more than their master’s-degree colleagues.

In its 2020 national survey the NASW found that 13.2 percent of respondents said they planned to continue their education to the highest level; 4.6 percent said they planned to earn a DSW and 8.6 percent said they planned to earn a PhD in social work.

The 90th-percentile salary figures reported in 2020 by the BLS are lucrative no matter which area of social work you look at. These represent the salaries for the social workers at the highest levels in their fields:

• Child, family, and school social workers – $80,290
• Healthcare social workers – $87,150
• Mental health and substance abuse social workers – $87,420
• Social and community service managers – $115,800

Altogether the general 90th-percentile salary for social workers is $90,479.

Salary Outlook for PhD in Social Work Grads

Social work is a fantastic career opportunity that allows you to make a true difference in the lives of the people in your community. It is a very diverse career and most social workers experience high levels of job satisfaction, because of the fact that they can see the positive impact of their work. Social workers are really caring individuals, and their passion for improving their community enables them to work so hard.

What Is Social Work?

Social work is a profession that is dedicated to helping people who are experiencing different forms of suffering, thus assisting them in improving their overall quality of life. They do this through a range of different tactics. These include:

• Providing services directly to community members • Working together with organizations that focus on community improvement

There are many professions that are focused on helping the community, but social work sets itself apart by working on the philosophy of “in their environment”. What this means is that a social worker will help people to define their situation, and what they would like their situation to look like instead, after which they are signposted to services and assistance that are out there. This could be something as simple as liaising with an employer to get more flexible working hours, to something as complex as helping a woman escape a domestic violence situation and start again.

Social workers want to bring about positive social change. To do this, they must be very highly educated. Social work degrees exist at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree levels. In order to become a licensed social worker, most states will require these professionals to have at least a master’s degree. So is there any reason to complete the Ph.D. in social work, if a master’s is all that is required?

Social Work Education and Training

Social work education and training follows a number of guiding rules and principles:

• That the program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) • That social workers meet their state licensing requirements • That social workers have a set body of knowledge • That social workers follow a code of ethics • That social workers follow specific practice standards

The profession is incredibly varied, not in the least because there is a demand for social workers in almost every element of society, including courts, rehabilitation facilities, prisons, nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, schools, private businesses, public agencies, and so on. What sets the Ph.D. in social work apart, however, is that it is the only degree that also allows you to work in schools as an educator of the next generation of social workers. Additionally, if you choose to go down this route, you will ensure that the CSWE ranks the school at which you teach higher, as they base their rankings on the number of faculty members educated to doctorate degree level.

Licensing Requirements

Only social workers who have completed a CSWE-accredited program can work as a social worker. Only with the Master of Social Work (MSW) can they become licensed. Those who hold the Ph.D. or Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) have the greatest body of knowledge. They are the ones who cannot only educate tomorrow’s social workers, but also make new social work discoveries. Those who complete the DSW also have to focus their education on a certain element of social work, for which they have to write and defend a thesis. In no state is the DSW required to practice as a social worker, however. The American Association of State Social Work Boards (AASSWB) lists what the individual requirements for each state are.

Salary Outlook for a Ph.D. in Social Work Degree Holder

Very few people have completed a DSW degree. As a result, it can be difficult to determine exactly what the salary outlook is as well. What is known, according to data made available by Salary.com, is that:

• The average salary for a Ph.D. in social work holder who works as a professor is $86,073 per year. • The top 10% of social work professors earn $152,622 per year.

Additionally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that there will be a 12% increase in demand for social workers from 2014 to 2024. This means that there is also an increased demand for DSW holders, as they are the ones who will be able to train tomorrow’s workforce. However, it is important to note that there are significant budget constraints, including cuts to budgets, which means it is unlikely that demand will be met by 2024.

So is the DSW worth it? The simple answer is that obtaining the most advanced degree is always a good idea, even if it is only for one’s personal satisfaction. Certain new opportunities will become available to you with a Ph.D. in social work, and becomes the job market is so competitive, you will set yourself apart from other applicants at the same time.

Throughout, the terms “DSW” and “Ph.D.” have been used interchangeably. However, as the field of social work is changing, the two are also becoming more clearly defined. As such, the DSW is the more practical degree, which focuses on developing social worker skills. The Ph.D., meanwhile, is more focused on research and on advancing the profession as a whole. This is an important distinction to make if you are considering a doctorate degree in social work: do you want to teach and research (get the Ph.D.), or do you want to remain involved in the front line (get the DSW)?

As it stands, obtaining a Ph.D. in social work is optional. There are few careers in which it is a requirement. However, the field is changing dramatically, and there is an increased need for people with the most advanced skills. As stated, social workers are all about making the world a better place, and this means building on knowledge and experience in terms of how to actually achieve that. As such, although little is known about the exact outlook for Ph.D. in social work grads, it is likely that demand will only increase over time. And where demand increases, salary increases alongside with it, which is a welcome bonus.

Social and community service managers average $72,900 , BSL notes. Medical and health services managers are paid $115,160 , on average, BLS adds. At think tanks, research associates average $49,000 , and policy analysts earn $56,000 , based on 545 reported PayScale salaries.

College Teaching Jobs

College professors who teach social work enjoy interacting with students and introducing them to best practices in social work. They teach everything from beginning social work to doctoral dissertation seminars. Their days are spent giving lectures, grading papers, mentoring students and overseeing field practicum placements.

In addition to teaching duties, college professors have their own research agenda and curricula projects. Many are recognized experts in their field known for published scholarship in areas such as child welfare, intimate partner violence and trauma-informed practices. They often serve on national advisory boards and participate in professional organizations.

Social Welfare Policy Research Jobs
