A Place I Call Home

My home is situated in the city. It is not too big nor too small, just the perfect size. My family lives in the home. It comprises of my father, mother, sister and grandparents. We live in our ancestral home so my home is very vintage.

It is very old but remains to be super strong. There are six rooms in my home. Each family member has a unique room which they have decorated as per their liking. For instance, my elder sister is a big fan of music, so her walls are filled with posters of musicians like BTS, RM, and more.

Our drawing room is a large one with a high ceiling. We still use the vintage sofa set which my grandmother got as a wedding gift. Similarly, there is a vintage TV and radio which she uses till date.

Adjoining the drawing room is my bedroom. It is my favourite room because it contains everything that I love. I have a pet guinea pig which lives in a cage in my room. We also have a storeroom which is filled with things we donā€™t use but also cannot discard.

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.

Describe your Ideal Home

Posted by David S. Wills | Dec 2, 2022 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

Describe your Ideal Home

In the IELTS speaking test, you are sometimes asked to describe a building. I have written about that before several times. However, today we’re going to look at something a little trickier. This is about a building that may not even exist! You are going to describe your ideal home .

In this article, I’ll tell you how to analyse the cue card, pick the right language, and then give a great answer that could help you to get an excellent IELTS score.

Cue Card: Describe your Ideal Home

Here is the cue card that we will examine today:

Describe your ideal home or place to live. You should say: where it would be how big it would be and what it would contain what features it might include and explain why you think this would be your ideal home or place to live in.

The most important thing about this cue card is the word “ideal.” You would really need to understand this in order to answer it properly.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary , “ideal” means:

  • perfect, or the best possible

In other words, you are describing a home that you imagine living in one day . It may not even exist right now. It’s the best possible home for you, on a personal level, according to what you can imagine.

You should also aim to discuss the three bullet points and the idea expressed in the final line. You do not need to talk about them in order and don’t worry if you run out of time before you cover them all.

How to Describe your Ideal Home

After you have read the cue card, you should think immediately of a home to describe. It could be a house that you have seen somewhere or one that you just imagine. It’s best to get a concrete idea in your head, though, so that your description is coherent.

You can find lots of examples of dream homes on the internet. You can see various interesting house designs on Twitter, Pinterest, and Reddit, as well as numerous other places. These can give you inspiration.

Of course, it can be hard to describe architecture, even in your native language. Recently, my brother told me that his house had a mezzanine and I had to look it up on Google. I’d never heard the word before!

Still, you really only need to say what is important to you, so just think of features that your house might have. Try to be descriptive.

  • A swimming pool
  • Large windows
  • An office with big bookshelves
  • A big garden
  • Views of the sea or mountains
  • Decking for barbeques
  • A big veranda
  • An open living room area
  • A huge kitchen

house vocabulary for ielts

These are just some ideas that spring to mind. Obviously, everyone will have different preferences. The important thing is to present your own ideas in the right words.

Here are some related resources:

  • A guide to architecture vocabulary
  • General advice for talking about buildings
  • How to describe a modern building

More House Vocabulary

Now we have seen some useful vocabulary for describing houses, let’s see the names of different types of houses:

essay on my ideal home

There are many types of houses to know. For example:

  • semi-detached
  • apartment / flat
  • mobile home

You don’t need to know all of these but it is worth learning ones that you might want to talk about. For example, maybe you live in a semi-detached house but used to live in a cottage and want to live in a mansion … It would be useful to know these three words.

Planning your Answer

Once you know approximately what you want to say, you can make a few notes to help you. These can be a few key words that will remind you of important points. Some people use this for vocabulary and others use it for structure. It’s really a personal choice.

I might write:

  • Infinity pool
  • Counter space

Do these notes mean much to you? Probably not. However, that’s ok because your notes only have to make sense to you.

Sample Band 9 Answer

My ideal home would be located near the seaside. In fact, it would be right on the beach, so I could sit and watch the waves or go for a swim any time that I wanted. It would be close enough that I could hear the sea at night from my bedroom window.

The house itself would be quite large. I would want a big, open living room that looks out on the sea, as well as a main bedroom on the second floor with a similar view. I would need an office with a built-in library, and a gym alongside several spare bedrooms. The kitchen is important because I really like to cook, so I would want a large, modern kitchen with plenty of counter space for preparing food.

I would want a large terrace for sitting out on sunny days or at night, and ideally it would have enough space to give a view of the sky on starry evenings. There should be a swimming pool as well. In particular, I would like an infinity pool because these look really nice.

Although I like the aesthetic of old buildings, I think this one would be quite new because of my requirements. However, the right designer could make it beautiful and functional. Altogether, this home would give me everything I need to have a comfortable life in a relaxing place.

Listen to my answer in this video:

Notes on the Answer

You can see that I have given a thorough answer that is very visual in its description. Although there isn’t much in the way of specialist vocabulary, it is very topic-specific. That means all my language relates to the idea of homes. This is really important for IELTS success.

Some good vocabulary from this answer includes:

  • right on the beach
  • a big, open living room
  • a built-in library
  • a large, modern kitchen
  • plenty of counter space
  • I like the aesthetic of old buildings

Note that I have used a lot of adjectives here to make it really descriptive. Because of the topic (an ideal house), you have a lot of freedom to use your imagination. That can really help you if you have a good vocabulary.

My House Essay

It would be fantastic to live in my perfect home with my parents and sisters. In my view, a home ought to include all the facilities, including practical bathrooms, kitchens, and spacious rooms. I always dream of a home that makes me feel content, safe, and a part of something. Here are a few sample essays on "my house".

My House Essay

100 Words Essay On My House

My wonderful home is on the outskirts of the city. Our house is situated on a spacious lot with lots of room for gardens and picturesque surroundings. There are three bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room in my house. On top of a tall compound wall that completely encloses the area, we grow decorative creepers. Our home feels spacious and has lots of natural light thanks to the huge windows in each of our living spaces. Every morning when we eat breakfast, we are treated to a lovely view of the lawn and flowers in the backyard. A variety of materials, including bricks, cement, tiles, marble, and wood, were used to build the house. My house is the most amazing place in the world, and my friends love coming over.

200 Words Essay On My House

Description of my house.

My house was built close to where my neighbourhood is. My family and I had been living in a government-provided flat during my father's time in the military. However, my parents decided amicably to relocate to our town and stay there only for the duration of the service term. Our home was already in my village. We have five bedrooms, a kitchen, and a spacious veranda. There is also a little cottage for us. It is the ideal spot to reside in the summer. In metropolitan settings, the size of the building is more significant than the homes. The fields close to my house are a wonderful shade of green. It made us more aware of how lovely our home was.

Spaces Outside My House

There is a lot of open space in front of our house because my house was built on a pitch. My father built modest animal shelters for cows and dogs in this area and used them for gardening. For the same, some construction work was also done. We set up food and water for the local wildlife and birds. Together with my family, these activities turned my home into the cutest place to live. One of my favourite parts of the entire house is this location.

500 Words Essay On My House Essay

I reside in a beautiful home part of a colony in a tiny town adjacent to the city. Our home was just built recently, and we just moved in. Four rooms total two stories, including a living room, kitchen, dining room, terrace, and basement. Within the compound, we have enough room to create a garden. Our garden has a wide variety of vegetables and blooming plants planted.

My room offers a large balcony on the first level with a panoramic view. It also allows me to set up my telescope and see the night sky comfortably. We have a sizable kitchen with a door leading to the backyard garden. My parents enjoy their tea on the lawn every evening in the kitchen garden.

Our terrace is my favourite feature of my home. The top of our home has a sizable open area that is tastefully furnished for relaxing. On the balcony, there is a big swing that I enjoy using to spend my evenings reading my favourite books. Occasionally, I will invite my friends to play catch on the terrace. The open terrace is stunning to look at at night. I can see the moon and all the stars when the sky is clear. I prefer to lie down and count the stars on such clear evenings.

Our home is situated in a lovely and warm neighbourhood. My father often gets fruits and veggies from a small market nearby. We have excellent neighbours as well. They are generous and compassionate people who are always willing to lend a hand. I adore my brand-new home and all of its exquisite amenities. I prefer to spend time at home somewhere else.

My Dream House

We currently reside in a little house; thus, my future dream is to own my own home. To live with my parents, sisters, and me in my ideal home would be fantastic. A house should have all the amenities, such as functional bathrooms, kitchens, and spacious rooms. Instead of a large mansion, I always dream of a place that makes me feel happy, secure, and a part of something.

Space and Ventilation: There would be enough space throughout my home and sufficient ventilation. This will also contribute to making the house feel alive and airy.

Garden Space: In my home, there would be room for gardening because plants assist in purifying the air and look nice.

Balcony: My room would have a patio that led out to the exterior, giving me a view of the outside of my home. My ideal home would have a nice front view of a playground or a park.

Living Room: My home will have vibrant rooms thanks to the employment of various colour tones. I wish to have a reading area constructed in my house.

The ideal place to provide us with security, love, and affection is at home. We feel the most at ease and liberated there. I adore my home and the lovely family members who make it their own.

Describe an ideal house/ Describe a perfect house you saw

You should say:

  • when and where you saw it;
  • what it looked like;
  • what special features it had;
  • and explain why you liked it.

Sample Answer 1

Sample audio.

Click on the audio to listen to the sample answer above. Pay attention to the intonation and pronunciation of the words.

So I have been living in a 4-storeyed house for the last twenty years. It seemed fine at first, but as time went by, I gradually realised that there are many things about this house that I donā€™t like. For example, the stair is so steep that Iā€™m almost always out of breath when I reach my room on the third floor. I want to move somewhere else.

I have to say I prefer a high-rise flat to a house. This is mainly because the air there is fresher and there are fewer mosquitos, which are a terrible nuisance by the way. My ideal flat would be on the 20th floor or so, overlooking the whole neighbourhood. It would have a spacious living room, a fully-fitted kitchen, three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

The living room would need to be large enough to accommodate about 30 people, because I often invite friends over or throw small parties . I would like my sofa to be comfy and big enough to lie in and sleep. The walls have to be sound-proof as I canā€™t deal with noise; I must have a quiet environment to work or relax.

  • Steep: (of a slope) rising or falling at a sharp angle: Eg: The tent is set up on a steep mountain, where you can spot a breath-taking view.Ā
  • Out of breath: gasping for air, typically after exercise.Ā  Eg: After climbing the mountain, she was out of breath.Ā
  • High-rise: tall modern building with many floors Eg: Rose lives in a high-rise apartment in the city.Ā
  • Overlook:Ā  to provide a view of,Ā  especially from the above.Ā  Eg: John’s house overlooks the valley.Ā
  • Nuisance: someone or something that causes a problem for other people, an area, etc.Ā Ā  Eg: Sheela is such a nuisance that I hate her her companyĀ
  • Throw party: to host or hold a gathering.Ā  Eg: John decided to throw a party to his friends.Ā
  • Sound-proof: to prevent sound from coming into a room or building, or from being heard outside itĀ  Eg: Rose was looking for a soundproof apartment.Ā

Sample Answer 2

I would want my ideal house to be comfy and spacious, and it should be located in a not-so-urban area with a peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

Painted in yellow and white, the house would somehow look like a little palace for a royal family. The natural glare of the sun is a must for this house and must contain an effective window system for good ventilation. The home would be equipped with air-conditioning and modern appliances for convenience and comfort. Flowers and trees would be planted around it to decorate and make it look captivating.

My ideal house, full of natural light and surrounded by many exquisite gardens, would be the perfect place for me when I need an escape from my heavy workload in the city. I would be able to relish the fresh air, and living there would be the perfect way to relieve stress.

Having the opportunity to live in such a place would be a dream come true for me, feeling like a king in his castle, and I hope that one day I can build a place like this to live in.

My Dream House- An Essay

I always imagine how my future house will be. A home is a place surrounded by the people one loves. A house is not made beautiful by its furniture or decor, but by the people that live inside it. My dream house should be a house that I can share with my family when I grow old. I always dream of a wooden house in the hilly areas. My dream house should be the one facing a small river. Through the windows, I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains. My dream house would have a small garden where I will grow my own vegetables and fruits.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

In the 1950s the average home was about 983 square feet and the average cost was around $8,450 Homes were usually built with two or fewer bedrooms and children shared bedrooms if needed. Closets were around two feet by eight feet---just big enough for your clothes. Bathrooms were built out of necessity and most homes managed with just one. It was a luxury to have a garage or a carport and the majority of homes in the 50s did not include any protection for a car.

Central air conditioning was another luxury that most did without, and only a small percentage of Americans even owned a window air conditioning unit.Fireplaces were used mostly for heating homes instead of being a showy display, and only about 22 percent of houses being built included them. Most Americans built their hous

es on small plots of land and did most of the gardening, landscaping, and yard work themselves. Also, housework, cleaning, cooking, and decorating were all usually done by homeowners themselves. This is a far cry from the modern American dream home.

By most peopleā€™s standards today, this type of home would be considered insufficient and cramped The house that I have designed is located on the elusive island of Dubai.Dubai is a manmade archipelago in the United Arab Emirates. My home is the most noticeable construction on the island. I plan to spend the rest of my life here, so I paid close attention to the details.

Everything that surrounds me is simply amazing including all the trees and plants. It feels so good to live in a peaceful place and all you can hear are the birds

chirping. As I draw closer to the end of the Road. My home starts to appear.

My house is a five story Victorian that lies on a twenty acre lot. As I come near to the entrance of the house I am then surrounded by four columns that lead to the most elegant doors. The doors were made of mahogany with glass stained windows in the center of the each door. Each handle was made of brass along with brass frames. As I continue to walk around my house I come to my garage where my collection of rare automobiles is.

I have an Acura MDX crossover, and many classic American cars from the 1970s. The roof of the entire structure is clad in terracotta Spanish tile each window of the house has painted pale- red shutters on all windows. The porch then continues to the back side of the house as I am able to look over the Pacific Ocean The walls of the house are made of a stone to avoid damage from the sea air.The outside of my house has an amazing view palm shaped isle. On the inside of my house I am able to stand in the middle of the living room and look up all five stories of the house.

There is an elevator that is to the right of the living room that is able to go to each story of the house. I must say that I donā€™t need many rooms of them, but it is very important that all these rooms were as large as it is possible, and are furnished in Ethan Allen furniture The modern

front door opens into a spacious hall, where are many photos of family members and friends. As far as bedrooms they are very large, comfortable and elegant as well. There are soft, huge beds and, every bedroom has bathroom and toilet, which are spacious and equipped with all the modern conveniences. There is no question that the accent of the house is living room, it is the place where I can relax, watch TV, listen to music or just sit and look at the window to the ocean.

Each floor of the house has two bathrooms (one full and one half) with two to three bedrooms. When I walk in the kitchen it is the kitchen that every person needs. The best part of the kitchen is the counter in the middle that is a self a self-cleaning granite-countertop for cutting and cleaning foods. I then walk to the back yard. The garden where the purple orchids and pink hyacinths are well maintained the grass and the soil gave out a very natural smell, As I walk toward the road the first thing you will see is a full size basketball court, and to the right of that you will see I see the tennis court. The best part about my backyard is the seating area, with a reflecting pond for meditating the pond has Japanese coy fish, it is in-between the basketball court and tennis court.

As I approach the opposite side of the yard there is lazy-l shaped swimming pool. The great thing about the pool is that it is connected to a pool that is inside the house.Next to the outside pool there is

a baseball field. To the east of the house I then realize there is a white gazebo.

If you are sitting in the gazebo you are able to see anything or anyone that enters or leaves the house. I planned this out very well to have all my needs taken care of. I live in a very picturesque place I prefer clean fresh air and unpolluted water. I donā€™t find myself very happy in a little and uncomfortable house, so my very cozy, comfortable home. Thatā€™s all about my dream house.

I hope that one day my dreams will be come true. It would be great to live in house which is in my dreams.

Essay on My Ideal Person

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Ideal Person in their schools and colleges. And if youā€™re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Letā€™s take a lookā€¦

100 Words Essay on My Ideal Person

Introduction.

An ideal person is someone we admire and aspire to be like. This person possesses qualities that we value and wish to emulate. My ideal person is my mother.

My Motherā€™s Qualities

My mother is kind, patient, and hardworking. She always puts others before herself and never hesitates to lend a helping hand.

Her Influence

Her influence on me is profound. She teaches me to be kind, to respect others, and to work hard. I aspire to be like her in every way.

In conclusion, my ideal person is my mother because of her admirable qualities. She is my role model and I strive to be like her.

250 Words Essay on My Ideal Person

The concept of an ideal person varies among individuals, influenced by personal values, societal norms, and cultural contexts. To me, an ideal person embodies a blend of intellectual prowess, moral integrity, and emotional intelligence.

Intellectual Prowess

Intelligence extends beyond academic prowess or professional success. An ideal person should have the ability to think critically, question the status quo, and innovate. They should possess a thirst for knowledge and a constant curiosity, underpinned by a lifelong commitment to learning.

Moral Integrity

Moral integrity forms the cornerstone of an ideal personā€™s character. They should have the courage to uphold ethical principles, even when faced with adversity. Honesty, empathy, and kindness, coupled with a strong sense of responsibility towards society, define their moral compass.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, manage, and effectively express oneā€™s own feelings, as well as engage and navigate successfully with those of others. The ideal person should have a high degree of emotional intelligence, embodying qualities such as empathy, self-awareness, and resilience.

In conclusion, my ideal person is a blend of intellectual prowess, moral integrity, and emotional intelligence. They represent a beacon of inspiration, guiding us towards personal growth and societal progress. Their existence is not merely a utopian dream, but a goal worth striving for, as they embody the pinnacle of human potential and virtue.

500 Words Essay on My Ideal Person

The concept of an ideal person varies from person to person and is shaped by our values, experiences, and aspirations. For some, an ideal person might be a great leader, for others a selfless philanthropist, or perhaps an innovative entrepreneur. In my perspective, an ideal person is an amalgamation of various qualities such as resilience, compassion, wisdom, and vision. This essay will delve into these attributes that constitute my ideal person.

Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is a key characteristic of my ideal person. Life is fraught with challenges and setbacks, but itā€™s not about how many times one falls, itā€™s about how many times one gets back up. Resilience is not just about enduring hardships but also learning, growing, and becoming stronger from them. This quality is embodied by individuals such as Malala Yousafzai, who, despite facing life-threatening obstacles, continues to fight for girlsā€™ education globally.

Compassion, the capacity for empathy and understanding towards others, is another essential trait. My ideal person is someone who not only empathizes with others but also takes action to alleviate their suffering. This quality is not limited to grand gestures but can be expressed in everyday interactions. Mother Teresa serves as a perfect example of compassion personified, dedicating her life to serving the poor and destitute.

Wisdom, the ability to make sound judgments and decisions, is a trait that distinguishes my ideal person. It involves a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to apply perceptions, judgements and actions in keeping with this understanding. It often requires control of oneā€™s emotional reactions so that universal principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine oneā€™s actions. Wisdom is a trait seen in individuals like Nelson Mandela who, through his understanding and foresight, led South Africa towards a more equitable future.

Lastly, my ideal person possesses vision, the ability to foresee a better future and strategize to achieve it. Visionaries change the world with their ideas and actions. They dare to dream and have the courage to execute their dreams, no matter how daunting the task may seem. Vision is a trait exemplified by visionaries like Elon Musk, who is revolutionizing space travel and renewable energy.

In conclusion, my ideal person is a blend of resilience, compassion, wisdom, and vision. These attributes are not inherent but are cultivated through experiences, introspection, and continuous learning. The embodiment of these qualities does not signify perfection, as my ideal person is also someone who acknowledges their flaws and learns from their mistakes. The journey towards becoming an ideal person is a continuous process, a pursuit of personal growth and betterment for oneself and others.

essay on my ideal home

No One Has a Right to Protest in My Home

The difference between a private yard and a public forum

An illustration of a home with a dialogue bubble above it

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

As a constitutional scholar and the dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law, I strongly defend the right to speak oneā€™s mind in public forums. But the rancorous debate over the Israel-Hamas war seems to be blurring some peopleā€™s sense of which settings are public and which are not. Until recently, neither my wifeā€”Catherine Fisk, a UC Berkeley law professorā€”nor I ever imagined a moment when our right to limit a protest at a dinner held at our own home would become the subject of any controversy.

Ever since I became a law-school dean, in 2008, the two of us have established a custom of inviting each class of first-year students over for a meal. These dinners help create and reinforce a warm community, and, to accommodate all students, they take place on many evenings during the year. The only exceptions were in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID. So last year and this year, at the request of the presidents of the third-year classes, we organized make-up dinners on three successive nights and invited each of the 400 graduating students to attend one.

The week before the dinners on April 9, 10, and 11, though, a group at Berkeley called Law Students for Justice in Palestine put a profoundly disturbing poster on social media and on bulletin boards in the law-school building. No dinner with Zionist Chem while Gaza starves , the poster declared in large letters. (Students sometimes refer to me as ā€œChem.ā€) It also included a caricature of me holding a bloody knife and fork and with what appeared to be blood around my lipsā€”an image that evokes the horrible anti-Semitic blood libel, in which Jews are accused of killing and cannibalizing gentile children. The poster attacks me for no apparent reason other than that I am Jewish. The posters did not specify anything I personally had said or done wrong. The only stated request was that the University of California divest from Israelā€”a matter for the regents of the University of California, not the law school or even the Berkeley campus.

George Packer: The campus-left occupation that broke higher education

Several Jewish students and staff members told me that the posters offended them and asked me to have them removed. Even though their presence upset me too, I felt that I could not take them off bulletin boards at a public law school. Though appalling, they were speech protected by the First Amendment.

The group responsible for the posters was not content to have its say on paper. Student-government leaders told me that Law Students for Justice in Palestine demanded that my wife and I cancel the dinners; if not, the group would protest at them. I was sad to hear this, but the prospect of a demonstration in the street in front of our home did not change our plans. I made clear that we would still host dinners for students who wanted to attend.

On April 9, about 60 students came to our home for dinner. Our guests were seated at tables in our backyard. Just as they began eating, I was stunned to see the leader of Law Students for Justice in Palestineā€”who was among the registered guestsā€”stand up with a microphone that she had brought, go up the steps in the yard, and begin reading a speech about the plight of the Palestinians. My wife and I immediately approached her and asked her to stop speaking and leave the premises. The protester continued. At one point, my wife attempted to take away her microphone. Repeatedly, we said to her: You are a guest in our home. Please leave.

The student insisted that she had free-speech rights. But our home is not a forum for free speech; it is our own property, and the First Amendmentā€”which constrains the governmentā€™s power to encroach on speech on public propertyā€”does not apply at all to guests in private backyards. The dinner, which was meant to celebrate graduating students, was obviously disrupted. Even if we had held the dinner in the law-school building, no one would have had a constitutional right to disrupt the event. I have taught First Amendment law for 44 years, and as many other experts have confirmed, this is not a close question.

Some attendees sympathetic to the student-group leader recorded a video. An excerpt of it appeared on social media and quickly went viral. Soon newspapers and magazines published stories about it. Some commentators have criticized my wife for trying to get hold of the microphone. Some have said that I just should have let the student speak for as long as she wanted. But in all of the dinners we have held over more than 15 years, not once has anyone attempted to give a speech. We had no reason to change the terms of the dinner to accommodate someone from an organization that put up anti-Semitic images of me.

After struggling over the microphone, the student said if we let go of it, she would leave. We relented, and she departed, along with about 10 other studentsā€”all of whom had removed their jackets to show matching T-shirts conveying a pro-Palestinian message.

Michael Powell: The unreality of Columbiaā€™s ā€˜liberated zoneā€™

The dinners went forward on Wednesday and Thursday. On Thursday night, about 15 people came to our home and stood on the street in front of it, and then on the path directly next to our backyard. They chanted loudly and at times offensively. They yelled and banged drums to make as much noise as possible to disturb the dinner. The event continued.

Being at the center of a social-media firestorm was strange and unsettling. We received thousands of messages, many very hateful and some threatening. For days, we got death threats. An organized email campaign demanded that the regents and campus officials fire my wife and me, and another organized email campaign supported us. Amid an intensely painful sequence of events, we experienced one upside: After receiving countless supportive messages from people we have met over the course of decades, we felt like Jimmy Stewart at the end of Itā€™s a Wonderful Life .

Overall, though, this experience has been enormously sad. It made me realize how anti-Semitism is not taken as seriously as other kinds of prejudice. If a student group had put up posters that included a racist caricature of a Black dean or played on hateful tropes about Asian American or LGBTQ people, the school would have eruptedā€”and understandably so. But a plainly anti-Semitic poster received just a handful of complaints from Jewish staff and students.

Many peopleā€™s reaction to the incident in our yard reflected their views of what is happening in the Middle East. But it should not be that way. The dinners at our house were entirely nonpolitical; there was no program of any kind. And our university communities, along with society as a whole, will be worse off if every social interactionā€”including ones at peopleā€™s private homesā€”becomes a forum for uninvited political monologues.

I have spent my career staunchly defending freedom of speech. As a dean, I have tried hard to create a warm, inclusive community. As I continue as dean of Berkeley Law, I will endeavor to heal the divisions in our community. We are not going to solve the problems of the Middle East in our law school, but we must be a place where we treat one another with respect and kindness.
