It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.  

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a process in which man tries to bring his mind, body and soul together. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to meet or be united. Yoga originates from Indian culture. People have been practising Yoga since about 5000 years ago. Yoga does not have physical fitness primarily; in Yoga, people try to control their body and mind through mental focus and breathing methods.

If men teach Yoga, then they are called yogis, and if women teach, they are called yoginis. Yoga Sutra is a 2000-year-old book. This is the only book in which written evidence of Yoga has been found. During my school days, my physical education teacher used to tell us various improvements and health benefits from Yoga. Apart from this, it also strives to elevate the metabolism of our body and helps in the improvement of strengthening muscles, forming flexibility in bones and posture of your body. It helps in the improvement of the concentrating ability of a child’s mind.

In today’s modern world, the life of human beings has become complicated over the passing years and generations too. Yoga exercise is the only solution for a healthy body, especially for youths.

Many yoga poses help the youths in the reduction of the peer pressure they face in their life. In the morning they are rushed to the school or college, do their assignments, perform extra-curricular activities, participate in competitions and sports too.

However, Yoga activity could inspire them to activate their bodies and have creative imaginations. The activity of breathing, to inhale and exhale helps them to understand the vital importance of proper breathing and fills them with strength and boosting energy in their body.

The combo activity of breathing and yoga poses is a boon for their body and the safest way for the kids to explore themselves and also to receive calmness.

Yoga, for me, is not something like an educational agenda but to fight with stress and reduce the pressure in order to enjoy each and every moment. Yoga helps me in reduction of my stress as it affects how I would interact with each and every individual present near me or in my surroundings otherwise it could create a great impact on my learning and mental abilities with my health and well-being.

The introduction of yoga in my life was like a proper exercise, which was indifferent to the traditional one. As, slowly and gradually I started knowing about the plethora of body poses of yoga in which, I may become a particular natural thing or an animal it became more and more interesting for me as each session passed over with the development of my creative imagination, in order to give attention and concentrate on essential things.

My hobby yoga is beneficial at various levels with no stress and pressure to accelerate towards the balancing of the body, controlling the mind, coordinating with people, building confidence, enhancement of motor skills, maintaining emotional stability, proper breath control, building self-esteem, flexible body, elevating focus and toning of muscles and senses.

The poses of yoga could be seen to have quite a similarity with gymnastics as it teaches us various ways of learning how the body works and feels the pain and stress in performing each different Yoga position.

I have been once to Yoga session where it starts with a warm-up exercise. In this, I had various stretches and asanas to make the bones more strong for performing vigorous activities of stretching the spine, core, and limbs. Then, standing poses to build muscle strength and maintain the proper balance of the body with arms pulling towards the head else bend to the waist.

It helps in weight loss and reduction of cardiac problems too. Next, sitting poses prepares the body to give attention to the breathing part. The stretching of hips and legs with multiple yoga asanas to adopt the body skills. The last one is twist pose for the framework of the spine as we do spine stretching in being seated posture that helps in the flexibility of the spine and reduces the backache. It helps in the stimulation of blood circulation in our body.

Hence, Yoga as a hobby has proved to be the best source of activity for me to deliver the calmness to my soul and provide every benefit to my mind with the reduction in stress in order to enhance my concentration power and focus on the much better things with Yoga asanas.

How I'm Incorporating Yoga Into My Parenting Routine

When I was pregnant with my twins, prenatal yoga class was a social outing I looked forward to at least four times a week. I felt strong mentally, physically, and spiritually and wanted to feed that energy to my growing babies. It was such an essential part of my ritual that I attended two days before I was scheduled to give birth; I had just turned 41 a couple of weeks before, and my girl-boy fraternal twins were born via C-section two minutes apart. After the invasive surgery and health-related challenges that followed, my doctors advised me to stay off the mat for up to three months. I was devastated. Although I knew my body needed to rest to heal, I thought yoga would help the regeneration process. I'd been practicing for 10 years before the twins were born, after all, and I'd started right after having a completely natural birth with my oldest daughter, who is 11 years older than her brother and sister.

Today, the twins are 6, and without hesitation, they'll find a nice spot to meditate and practice yoga no matter where we are. It's beautiful to see how these tiny humans know and deeply understand that they are energetic beings connected to Earth in more ways than one.

I've always wished I had learned yoga when I was a child, so I made sure to give that opportunity to my children. I've taught them to breathe with every movement, to go from pose to pose on the inhale and then the exhale. They've learned to use yoga and breathwork to calm themselves down. Sure, I still deal with 6-year-old tantrums and twin fights, but they usually de-escalate quickly when I remind them to return to their breath. I place my hand on their heart chakra and ask them to breathe deeply, to fill their belly up like a balloon and then empty it out completely. My hope is that these techniques also work for them during their school day when Mama isn't there to put my hand on their chest — that they'll use their own hands and learn to manage their emotions.

During Savasana, one of the final resting poses in yoga, the twins learn how to be present by using their imagination. I guide them through this relaxing pose by asking them to imagine their body glowing like a firefly. Next, I call out body parts for them to relax, beginning with the top of their heads and moving down to their toes. As they do this, there is little room to think about anything else, which means they are fully present in the moment. This is also an excellent way for them to prepare for a good night's sleep before heading to school the following day.

Yoga is also great for setting the mood for their day, and it doesn't have to take a long time. They're only 6, after all; an hour-long yoga class can't keep their attention. However, a 10- to 15-minute routine is exactly what they need to get centered and feel energized throughout the day.

Incorporating yoga throughout the day is also beneficial. Whenever we go to a park we'll do poses that coincide with nature, like Tree, Star, Half Moon, and Butterfly. Trips to the library often include checking out a kid's yoga book and then trying out the moves during story time before bed. Breathwork practice can also take place nearly anywhere, including the grocery store. As we peruse the aisles, checking things off our grocery list, we engage our breath by breathing deeply in for a count of four, holding for a count of four, and then exhaling for up to seven seconds. It becomes a game that we all enjoy!

One of the most important things that I want them to learn from practicing yoga is to honor the emotions they feel and have ways to manage them. This skill is beneficial at any age, but the earlier one can learn, the better. Yoga has helped them feel a stronger connection to self and the world around them. I continued my practice to show them the benefits without forcing them to do it with me. Early in the morning, I'd get my mat out and begin short stretches to wake my body up. Slowly, I'd see one or both twins get a mat and place it beside me. Eventually, this became our morning stretch.

In recent years, I've felt called to deepen my Kundalini yoga practice, which increases self-awareness and consciousness through breathwork, meditation, chanting, and movement. It's typical to wear all white during the practice, including a white head wrap to protect the crown chakra. As I dress for my practice each day for 40 consecutive days, I always make sure my twins are present and watching. Their little eyes observe me getting dressed and wrapping my head. I often play calming meditation music as I do this and stop sporadically to pray by simply closing my eyes and holding my hands over my heart chakra. It wasn't long before they started imitating me, and seeing it was so beautiful. These days, they dress up with white garments and head wraps, mimic the chants I recite, and sing the closing "Longtime Sunshine" song word for word.

My twins don't have to be yogis for life or become certified yoga instructors like I did. Still, I feel it is essential to teach them yoga, meditation, and other mindfulness practices early on in their lives to provide them with tools for living a balanced life. This doesn't mean they won't face challenges; it just means they'll know how to overcome obstacles without feeling defeated.

Cat-cow pose

To get into this pose, start on your hands and knees. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart, and your knees should be below your hips. Take a deep breath and tilt your head towards the ceiling while also sticking up your pelvis -- this should mimic a "cow." Then, on your exhale, arch your back and bring both your head and pelvis down like a "cat." You can repeat these two motions a few times before moving on. 

Forward fold

This pose is as easy as standing up straight and leaning over to reach for your toes. If you are able, place your hands on the ground. Make sure your back is straight and you are taking deep breaths.

Bridge pose

Start by lying down on your back, legs and arms stretched out and on the ground. Take a deep breath, raise your core off the ground and shift your arms closer to your body to balance. Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle. Your hands can lie flat, or you can bring them together underneath your core. 

An easy pose to transition into after Bridge -- start this pose on your back. Lift your legs to the ceiling and out a little past your shoulders (or however far you can go). Then, grab onto the outside of your feet with both hands. Gently rock left and right to relieve tension in your lower back. 

Legs-up-the-wall

You will need to clear a space beside a wall for this pose. Facing the wall, lie on your back and walk your legs up high or lift your hips with your arms. Your hips can be against the wall or a little away. Once you get in a comfortable spot and you feel like you can balance, stretch your arms out beside you. This pose is great for destressing and improving your circulation . 

Child's pose

You can start this pose by kneeling or getting on your hands and knees. Tuck your feet underneath your hips and bring your head close to the ground. Reach your hands out in front of you, stretching your spine. The further you reach, the better the stretch will be for you.

Seated twist

If you are coming out of Child's pose for this next one, sit back up and extend your legs out in front of you. Cross one leg over the other, pulling the heel of the crossed leg to your outer thigh. With the opposite arm, cross your body and twist yourself, pushing with your elbow on the raised knee. Twist and breathe. Repeat with the other side before moving on. 

Butterfly pose

From a seated position, straighten your posture and press the bottom of both your feet together. Placing your hands on your feet, attempt to press your hips as low as you can to the ground. The lower you go, the bigger the stretch. If you are looking for more of a challenge, move your feet closer to your body. 

Head-to-knee pose

This is a basic pose. Start in a seated position with your legs out in front of you. Bring one foot to the inner thigh of your opposite leg and extend your hands out over your extended leg. Sit up taller, breathe deeply and grab ahold of your foot in front of you. If you can't fully reach your foot, no problem: Grab your ankle or the back of your knee. Lean into the stretch and try to bring your forehead to your knee. Repeat on the opposite side.

This loss of bone mass weakens the bone. The loss of strength can go unnoticed until a fracture occurs. Fractures as a result of osteoporosis are usually in the hip, wrist, or spine.

An estimated 10.2 million older adults in the United States have osteoporosis, and an additional 43 million have low bone mass and are at risk of developing osteoporosis. People born with uteruses are four times more likely to be affected by this condition than people assigned male at birth.

Osteoporosis can be managed with measures such as medications, increased intake of bone-strengthening nutrients like calcium and vitamin D, and exercises that help build and maintain bone mass, like yoga.

Benefits of Yoga for Osteoporosis 

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical postures , breathwork, and meditation. The physical movement has been shown to have a variety of benefits for everyone, not just those with osteoporosis, such as:

  • Better posture
  • Improved balance and flexibility
  • Enhanced coordination
  • Greater range of motion
  • Increased muscle strength
  • More even gait
  • Increased bone density

These physical benefits are especially helpful for people with osteoporosis because improved coordination and balance can help prevent falling, which is the main cause of fractures in people with osteoporosis.

Yoga also uses weight-bearing movement—that is, moves that make your body work against gravity—which has been shown to encourage bone formation and increase bone strength. This can help keep osteoporosis from progressing.

A 2016 study examined the effectiveness of 12 specific yoga postures in raising bone mineral density (an indicator of bone mass). People born with uteruses are more likely to develop osteoporosis as they get older because the rate of bone breakdown increases after menopause . This is because estrogen is generally protective of bones, but menopause causes levels of this hormone to drop.

Yoga seems to be particularly effective at helping postmenopausal people improve and maintain bone density. In a small 2016 study, 30 women, ages 45 to 62, with postmenopausal osteoporosis did a one-hour yoga session four days a week for six months. At the end of the study, the participants' average T-scores (a measure of bone density) had significantly improved.

Additional studies have confirmed these results, but more research is needed to determine how yoga stimulates bone formation and how often the practice must be done to see improvements.

12 Yoga Poses for Bone Health 

Any yoga flow will help encourage bone formation. Aim to do at least two 30-minute sessions per week.

To get started, you may want to try the yoga routine created specifically for bone health for the 2016 study. Each of the 12 poses is to be held for 30 seconds, followed by a 30-second pause.

The poses described below are the classical pose format. When you begin yoga for the first time, make sure you do so under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Also, make any modifications as needed, such as those in Dr. Fishman's video.

For Hips and Legs

Vrksasana — Tree

  • Standing with feet hip-width apart, shift your weight into your right foot and lift your left foot off the floor.
  • Slowly bend your left knee and bring the sole of your left foot to rest inside your ankle, lower leg, or thigh. Avoid pressing your foot into your knee.
  • Raise your arms above your head or in front of your chest, palms together.
  • Focus your gaze on a fixed object to help you keep your balance.
  • Take 5 to 10 breaths, then lower your left foot and repeat on the other side.

Trikonasana — Triangle

  • Stand with legs spread wide. Keep your right foot facing forward and turn your left foot out about 45 degrees.
  • Bend at the hip toward your left foot and slide your left palm down to your left shin, the floor, or a block.
  • Extend your right arm up.
  • Hold for 30 seconds, and repeat on the other side.

Virabhadrasana II — Warrior II

  • Stand in a wide stance on your mat with feet parallel, facing the left side of the room.
  • Keeping your torso aligned with your hips, turn your right foot toward the front of the mat and bend your right knee, aiming for 90 degrees.
  • Raise both arms to shoulder level, actively reaching out to the sides.

Parsvakonasana — Side-Angle Pose

  • Stand with your legs spread wide facing the left side of the room and turn your right foot toward the front of the mat.
  • Bend your right knee into a lunge.
  • Lower your right forearm to rest on your right thigh and extend your left arm up over your left ear. 

Parivrtta Trikonasana — Twisted Triangle

  • From a wide stance facing the left, turn your right foot toward the front of the mat.
  • Put your hands on your hips. Raise your left arm overhead.
  • Keeping your spine straight, turn your torso toward your front leg and hinge forward. As you twist, extend your right arm.
  • Place your left hand directly under your left shoulder, inside or outside of your right foot (whichever is most comfortable). You can use a block for extra support.
  • Lift your right hand toward the ceiling and look up.
  • Hold this position for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side, starting with the left foot forward.

  • Lie on your back with your hands at your sides, knees bent, and feet flat on the floor close to your butt.
  • Press into your feet as you lift your hips and torso to create a straight line from your knees to your shoulders.
  • Hold for up to 30 seconds, then lower your hips to the floor.

  • Lie on your back with legs outstretched.
  • Bend your right knee, bringing your leg into your chest.
  • Hook a yoga strap or belt around the ball of your right foot.

  • Shift both ends of the strap into your right hand. Holding both ends in your right hand, keep the left side of your body level with the ground.

Safety First

Not all yoga poses are appropriate for everyone with osteoporosis. Always check with your healthcare provider before beginning any new exercise, including a yoga program. Look for modifications to poses that are outside of your skill, experience, comfort, or safety levels. Any pose or movement that causes abnormal discomfort or pain should be discontinued immediately.

  • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with right leg.

Salabhasana — Locust

  • Lie down on your stomach with your forehead or chin to the mat. You can place a blanket under your hips for padding if you find this more comfortable.
  • Extend arms long by your side with palms facing the floor and stretch your legs out behind you.
  • Roll your shoulders back and inhale as you lift your head, chest, and arms up off the floor.
  • Firming your buttocks, lift your legs such that your feet and knees are off the floor. Your weight will be resting on your lower ribs, belly, and front pelvis.
  • Make sure your neck stays in a neutral position by keeping your gaze on the floor just in front of you, not cranking up.
  • Hold for 3 to 5 breaths. Exhaling, lower down to the floor, turning your head to one side and resting on your cheek. Repeat 1 to 2 times.

Marichyasana III — Straight-Legged Twist

  • Sit on the floor with legs extended out in front of you.
  • Bend your left knee and cross your left leg across the right. Place the sole of your left foot on the floor against the right leg, as close to the groin as possible.
  • Rotate your torso to the left. Hook your right arm on the outside of your left thigh, and rest your left hand behind you.
  • As you exhale, use your right arm to twist further (only twisting as far as is comfortable), looking over your left shoulder.
  • Hold for several breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Matsyendrasana — Bent-Knee Twist

  • Sit on the floor and bend your left leg in, letting the foot rest near the groin.
  • Bend your right knee and cross your right foot over your left thigh, stepping your right foot on the floor to the outside of your left leg.
  • As you exhale, turn toward the right and hook your left elbow to the outside of your right knee.
  • Rest your right hand behind you. Use your right arm to deepen the twist, if desired.
  • Hold for 10 breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Savasana — Corpse Pose

  • Lie down on your back with your arms and legs splayed open. Turn palms upward.
  • Once you are in position, relax your whole body, including your face. Don't try to hold your position; just let your body feel heavy.
  • Breathe naturally.
  • Stay in this position for as long as you are comfortable, 2 to 5 minutes.
  • To come out of this pose, begin by deepening your breath, then start to wiggle your fingers and toes to slowly reawaken your body.
  • Do a full-body stretch from hands to feet.
  • With your eyes closed, bring your knees into your chest and roll over to one side. Rest in the fetal position for a few breaths.
  • Return to a sitting position, using your hands for support.

Yoga Poses to Avoid 

There are some cautions for people with osteoporosis when it comes to yoga.

  • Avoid extremes in range of movement.
  • Don’t do crunches or sit-ups.
  • Avoid poses that require spinal flexion (rounded-back poses).
  • Use gentle backbends instead of big backbends.
  • Use mild side bends instead of extreme twists and side bends.
  • Avoid inversions or practice milder ones.
  • Take alignment-focused classes instead of fast-paced, competitive classes.

Some poses should be avoided or done with caution, including:

  • Any deep spinal twists
  • Rounding poses or rounded-spine movements
  • Corkscrew or bicycle
  • Deep hip stretches (like pigeon pose)

If possible, it's best to start practicing yoga under the guidance of an in-person instructor who is knowledgeable about osteoporosis. The participants in Dr. Fishman's study were advised to find an instructor of Iyengar yoga. This type of yoga focuses on body alignment and breath control.

Some tips for finding a class or an instructor include:

  • Ask about a yoga teacher's qualifications.
  • Choose beginner classes if you are new to yoga.
  • Get recommendations from friends.
  • Find a good fit (even if it means trying out several different instructors or styles of classes).
  • Ask your healthcare provider for recommendations.
  • Check resources for osteoporosis, particularly local ones, to see if they have recommendations.
  • Check for yoga course offerings at your local community center or senior center.

As the new school year begins, school districts across the United States are cracking down on cellphones in classrooms. Teachers are tired of constantly pressing students to stop watching TikTok and messaging friends during class. In many schools, students have also used phones to threaten or bully their classmates.

As a result, as I note in a story today , at least eight states, including Indiana and Pennsylvania, have adopted measures this year to limit cellphones in schools.

But the phone crackdowns illustrate a larger issue. Technology rules and safeguards in schools often lag far behind student use and abuse of digital tools.

And it’s not just phones — school-issued laptops, tablets and classroom apps can also become sources of distraction and bullying. In today’s newsletter, I’ll highlight some of the tech challenges schools are facing.

Student cellphone bans

Schools have been trying to limit student phone use for decades. Maryland banned students from bringing pagers and “cellular telephones” to school in the late 1980s as illegal drug sales boomed. In the 1990s, as mobile phones gained traction, some schools barred the devices to stop the chirping from disrupting class.

Since the 2000s, though, it’s also gone the other way. As school shootings became more common, many districts began allowing mobile phones as a safety measure. And, after the rise of iPhones, some schools that had barred cellphones reversed the bans in part because some lower-income students who did not own laptops used them for schoolwork.
