Doctor G review: Comedy about a male gynaecology intern belabours the point

Doctor G review: Comedy about a male gynaecology intern belabours the point

Ayushmann Khurrana’s new film completes an arc that began a decade ago with Vicky Donor, in which Khurrana played a sperm donor. In Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), Khurrana’s marketing executive tackled erectile dysfunction. In Anubhuti Kashyap’s Doctor G , Khurrana’s character doesn’t want to know about the consequences of sperm doing what they are supposed to do.

Khurrana’s medical intern Uday is desperate to pursue osteopathy, but is instead forced to settle for gynaecology. What is my place in this branch of medicine for women and dominated by female professionals, whines Uday, seemingly unaware of the hordes of male gynaecologists out there.

Uday has stumbled into a never-ending vagina monologue, filled with swollen-bellied women and an all-female classroom. His supervisor Nandini (Shefali Shah) is the kind of no-nonsense doctor who can make a baby pop out merely by staring at a womb.

Back home, Uday has a kooky mom (is there ever any other kind?). Mom (Sheeba Chadha) insists on shoving ladoos into Uday’s mouth at the exact moment when he chomping on a slice of watermelon. Similarly, Doctor G bites off more than it can chew.

Anubhuti Kashyap, who has previously directed the web series Afsos , makes her feature debut with Doctor G . The film has the look and feel of too many television episodes crammed into a 124-minute film.

At its most basic, Doctor G is an excuse for the fish-out-of-water brand of comedy in which Khurrana excels. Khurrana’s skill at being the odd man out – literally so in this case – is most useful in an ambitious narrative that wants to champion gender equality, demystify a crucial aspect of women’s health, and demand that men be empathetic towards the women in their lives.

That’s a whole lot of bumpy ground to cover, but Doctor G actually reaches its destination by the interval itself. The second half, which loops back to Uday’s mentor Ashok (Indraneil Sengupta) and his underage girlfriend, is a whole other movie.

Can men become sensitive to women’s problems by peering at their innards? Doctor G is the kind of film in which the question answers itself. Another question goes unanswered: if men lord over nearly every branch of medicine, what goes of whose mother if women dominate gynaecology?

Comedy, a time-tested device to sell uncomfortable truths, is the narrative’s vestigial organ, which is also what Uday’s seniors compare him to. The limp attempts at humour include the name of Uday’s classmate – KLPD, played by the comedian AiyyoShraddha – and the efforts of Uday’s mother to lose herself in the pleasures of Tinder. There’s also a semi-clad friend floating around who suggests that the movie was far more outre than it ended up being.

Uday’s love interest Fatima (Rakul Preet Singh) is among the film’s better-realised tracks. Anubhuti Kashyap handles Fatima’s fondness for Uday with a deft touch that’s missing elsewhere.

The working-class women who heave themselves into the government hospital where Uday is being trained barely register in a film that signals virtue at all times. Apart from imparting a few maternity ward hacks, these characters are a side show to Uday’s delayed coming-of-age experience.

‘Doctor G’ movie review: Ayushmann Khurrana’s film gets the diagnosis right, but treatment is palliative

Tailor-made for ayushmann khurrana, the anubhuti kashyap dramedy addresses the issue of gender stereotyping with a light touch.

A still from ‘Doctor G’

At a time when filmmakers are keen on exploring female characters that find their way into male bastions, in Doctor G , writer-director Anubhuti Kashyap attempts the opposite, and the result isn’t completely satisfying.

A young male medical graduate from Bhopal ends up doing his masters graduation in gynaecology, due to a number of reasons that are governed by his social conditioning rather than his understanding of the noble profession. One of them is that Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) believes his girlfriend sucked up his rank to improve hers. He is sure that a female classmate would swap a ‘male’ branch like orthopedics with his trade that suits only women in his outlook. He only needs to look up the internet to find a number of successful male gynaecologists, but that is out of the syllabus here. And when he attempts to take a break on a false pretext to prepare for next year, his righteous teacher Nandini Shrivastava (Shefali Shah) doesn’t allow him to.

Instead, when he goofs up, she wants him to lose the male touch while treating patients. Dr Nandini’s advice, commonly doled out in medical colleges, is central to the narrative as it not only rattles Uday, but takes the core argument about imagined gender roles and lack of sensitivity beyond the boundaries of hospitals to society at large. A patient can be cured in the hospital, but what about the pathogen of patriarchy that is lurking outside?

Credits to Anubhuti and the co-writers; the idea of finding ‘the right touch’ keeps us invested in the heart-warming second half and prevents the film from getting reduced to a series of humorous situations around a budding male gynaecologist. Though some of that humour works, other situations feel cooked-up to create a scene. However, as the film throttles towards the business end, Anubhuti manages to shed the frills to strike home the point.

Uday represents the set of boys who believe that they understand women, but in reality, have a vestigial understanding of the female mind in truth. Anubhuti credits it to the lack of female company at a young age, and ‘90s cinema which promulgated that a boy and a girl could never be friends. Lyricist Puneet Sharma aptly defines them as Idiot Ashawadi in a peppy composition by Amit Trivedi. In a society where it is taboo for a boy and girl to take a stroll together, Uday is akin to those guys who pretend to listen to girls only when their hormones force them to.

In a kind of spiritual successor to Vicky ( Vicky Donor ) and Manu ( Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui ), Ayushmann plays yet another immensely-relatable, flawed character who doesn’t easily come-of-age. Of course, it has become formulaic, but his charm as a fallible guy-next-door is yet to wane. Early in the film, we are told that he is not a Kabir Singh-kind of obsessive lover; Uday is much mellower and casual in his sexist outlook, but this doctor also doesn’t understand the idea of consent or the value of friendship between persons of two different genders.

The bigger picture unfolds through Uday’s undulating relationship with his senior Fatima Siddiqui (Rakul Preet Singh), his single mother Lakshmi Devi (Sheeba Chaddha), and above all, his mentor or big brother (Indraneil Sengupta). Fatima is about to be engaged with a boy from her community and Lakshmi is looking for a companion. The closet chauvinist that he is, Uday takes his own time to listen to the women around him, or as Puneet suggests in the Newton song, the apple takes time to fall.

Though it is the story of Uday’s rise from the pits of patriarchy, Anubhuti doesn’t give a free pass to her female characters either; they also grapple with perceptions and stereotypes. Fatima takes time to decide, and when Uday performs his first delivery, his female classmates celebrate as if he has done something extraordinary. Through the evolution of Uday, Anubhuti touches upon the contentious issue of medical termination of pregnancy in girls on the cusp of adulthood.

Shefali Shah is effective as the voice of reason, while Rakul and Sheeba efficiently fill in the gaps for Uday. It is refreshing to see, for once, a male actor being ragged by girls on-screen or becoming an object of desire, but the problem with such films based on cutting-edge ideas is that the screenplay is eventually reduced to a good old news story, where most of the interesting points regarding a conflict are covered.

We have crossed the bridge where screenwriters have to repeatedly underline that they have created an unusual character or conflict. Now, a mother on a dating site isn’t an unseen idea; the expectation is of nuance. Here, all the adult characters are a tad too direct, as if they were written with the same pen. Like how Nandini throws the code of medical ethics at Uday, every time he transgresses, one wants Anubhuti to lose the journalist’s touch to treat the subject a little more cinematically, and find a little more heft between the lines.

Ayushmann Khurrana Actor

Release Date: 14 Oct, 2022

"Jo cheez mere paas hai hi nahi, uska ilaaj kaise karoon," asks Ayushmann Khurrana in Doctor G. The film is about Dr Uday Gupta, the one male student in the gynaecology department. Ayushmann's Dr Uday is a funny, quirky and confused gynecologist, the lone man in a class full of women. His world revolves around the stree-rog vibhaag of the medical college, though what he is desperately waiting for is to find an exit route from there. Doctor G has two halves. The first is cringey with nonsensical jokes and stereotypes, the other is a heartwarming drama with a social message.

When Fatima (Rakul Preet Singh) tells her fiancé that Uday is in her class, he laughs and asks, "In gynaecology?" But Uday doesn’t want to be in the stree-rog vibhaag. He is reluctantly enrolled in this department after he fails to secure a seat in the orthopedic section. Uday feels that he can't excel in gynaecology because his gender puts him at a disadvantage. This pretty much forms the story of Anubhuti Kashyap’s Doctor G.

Doctor G is another typical Ayushmann Khurrana film with a small-town guy at the centre. He is stuck in a situation most people don't want to talk about. He has his own hesitations but later embraces his flaws. In the end, there is a social message. Even though we just described the plot of Doctor G, it took us back to Badhaai Ho, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, or even Vicky Donor. The taboo this time is stree-rog. However, even with all this patriarchal setup you would dislike, you would relate to him. Meawhile, Uday’s love interest Fatima's (Rakul Preet Singh) role could have been written better. Ironic, isn't it?

Watch the trailer here:

Doctor G has several funny moments that will leave you chuckling. Uday finds himself in the middle of a vagina monologue in an all-female classroom, he is stuck in a hospital room full of pregnant women screaming to get his attention, the moments he hesitates to check the vagina's dilation, and of course, his mom (Sheeba Chadha) who is hooked on to her Tinder profile and goes on frequent dates. Yet, she's the typical mom who shoves ladoos into Uday's mouth at the exact moment when he is eating watermelons.

But, Doctor G could have been a better script if it wanted to champion gender equality. However, it went wrong in many ways. The story is actually finished in the first half. The second half follows a totally different storyline of Uday’s mentor Ashok (Indraneil Sengupta) and his underage girlfriend getting pregnant. Some of the monologues also sound too preachy. The writers, Sumit Saxena, Saurabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh, have ruined several moments.

Ayushmann Khurrana, as usual, does a great job. But, it has become sort of repetitive now. He should look for more varied roles because he's a good actor. That being said, we ought to applaud the accent he has picked up in the film. Since Doctor G is based in Bhopal, he says 'sorie' and not 'sorry', among other things. Shefali Shah, as Uday's supervisor Nandini, is the kind of no-nonsense doctor you'd bump into in most hospitals. The actress plays her part flawlessly. Rakul Preet Singh also has her moments. Sheeba Chaddha lights up the screen everytime she appears.

When the same story is presented with a new tadka every year, it feels stale. Ayushmann needs to step up his game and look for better roles. You can watch Doctor G just for its comedy.

Doctor G movie review: This 'typical' Ayushmann Khurrana film is part cringe, part heartwarming, but still watchable

Doctor g movie review: ayushmann khurrana's newest social comedy about a male gynecologist is both cringey and heartwarming, making it a confusing but watchable mess that annoys and also moves you..

Doctor G is two films in one. The first half of the film is sad cringefest, filled with bad jokes that evoke no laughter, stereotypical characters, and some bad funky background score that is very out of place in the 21st century. Then, there is a post-interval part, which feels like a new film altogether. This one has has several moments that will leave a lump in your throat. This coming-of-age drama takes the Ayushmann Khurrana formula to the extreme. But despite the jarring nature of the film, it remains watchable (largely) due to the performances of Ayushmann and Shefali Shah. ( Also read: Rakul Preet Singh ‘guarantees’ fans can watch Doctor G with family )

Doctor G movie review: A social comedy that stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh

Doctor G is a typical Ayushmann Khurrana film. It’s about a small town guy, stuck in a situation that society considers unusual. Over time, with the help of his family and friends, he learns that there is more to life than people’s perceptions and he overcomes his hesitations and embraces his flaws. I just described the plot of Doctor G. Or is it the plot of Badhaai Ho or Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui or even Vicky Donor? You get the drift. The taboo subject here is gynaecology and Ayushmann is the only male doctor in this supposed all-woman world at a Bhopal medical college.

The protagonist is sexist and the film establishes it quite clearly. It doesn’t want you to like Dr Uday Gupta, but relate to him, at least from the middle-class, small-town, patriarchal setup you have seen all around you. So he isn’t likeable but surely relatable. Ayushmann does the rest. Getting into the skin of a character like this is too easy for him now, but sadly, it has started to look repetitive. It’s not fresh when the same template is presented with a new garnish every year.

And the film begins poorly. The social comedy doesn’t get its comedy aspect quite right. The jokes about female or male anatomy and simulating childbirth on a man are pretty juvenile and stale by now. The first hour of the film is cringe-a-minute, where you begin to wonder if there is a point to all this. That cringefest is stopped dead in its tracks the moment Shefali Shah appears on screen. As the gynaecology department head Dr Nandini, she is every bit as intimidating and charming as we can hope her to be. Just wish there was more of her and less of whatever the writers were trying to pass off as comedy.

Shefali Shah is the pick of the actors in the film, stealing the show whenever she is on screen.

The film introduces a number of characters as Uday enters his college unwillingly and is ragged by all his seniors there. And then most of those characters disappear never to be seen again. It’s an editing flaw that makes several scenes pointless, and keeping track of what is happening a bit bothersome. Amid this, Ayushmann coasts through, even though he too looks a bit jaded by what the script has offered him. Rakul Preet Singh as his senior (and eventual love interest) Dr Fatima is decent but has very little to offer to the story except for a few strong scenes where she shows Uday the mirror. But the over-the-top and oversmart dialogue ruins many such moments.

But after the interval, a whole different movie resumes. You can be excused if you wonder if you have wandered into the wrong auditorium. Because post-interval, Doctor G is sensitive, emotional, heartwarming, and seldom misses a beat, even though it does get melodramatic in its climax. But it still manages to avoid being preachy, which is a big win for a film handling issues like gender disparity and medical ethics. The same writing that holds Doctor G back in the first half sets it free in the second. It’s bizarre but no complaints from my side on the improvement, at least.

Ayushmann Khurrana is breezy but he should note that the trope, the formula is starting to get old now. He needs to reinvent before it’s too late. Rakul Preet has very less to do in the film, which is sad because she is earnest and likeable in whatever scenes she has. The star, of course, is Shefali Shah. I have said it before and I’ll say it again. She is in the form of her life right now and is easily one of the finest actors in the country. She proves it here once again, balancing authority with sensitivity so seamlessly. The surprise package of the film for me was Ayesha Kaduskar, who plays a teenager in love with a much older married man. The maturity and grace with which she has handled the challenging and brief role is admirable.

Doctor G could have been a much better movie. But looking at the first half, one realises it could have been much worse as well. In the end, it’s a middling coming-of-age social drama that will find its audience. It manages to stay non-preachy and even though it attempts to give clean humour, does get cringey in parts. What saves it are the actors, who breathe new life into a tired script. Go watch it for them, if nothing else!

Doctor G Box Office Collection: Ayushmann Khurrana's comedy film runs out of steam sooner than later

Doctor g box office collection: ayushmann khurrana and rakul preet star in the campus comedy which was released in cinema halls on october 14..

Doctor G movie

Doctor G consistently underperforms

The movie was released on October 14 alongside Code Name Tiranga and the Hindi dubbed version of Kantara. While Code Name Tiranga was wiped out early on, Doctor G managed to earn a respectable first weekend total of Rs 15.03 crore. However, the box office numbers and the footfalls have declined on the weekdays. On Monday and Tuesday, the collections were in the range of Rs 1.50 crore. This took its five-day business to Rs 16.85 crore. On Wednesday, the business remained steady and now the film's collections at the end of six days stand at Rs 18 crore.

Doctor G looking at Rs 25 crore business

Initially, Doctor G was looking at Rs 40 crore lifetime business, which would have been respectable for a small-budget film like this one. However, since the weekday numbers have been lower, the movie will wrap its theatrical run with Rs 25 crore business or less. It is facing stiff competition from the regional release Kantara which has caught up with the day-wise collections of Ayushmann's film. Now, with Black Adam, Ram Setu and Thank God releasing in quick succession, the audience will have more options and Doctor G's box office business is set to diminish further.

Interesting premise, engrossing drama [second half keeps you hooked], neat performances [AyushmannKhurrana, ShefaliShah] are a big plus… Patchy first half [humour falls flat] and forgettable music are downers.

Ratings: Negative Sentiment  Review By: Komal Nahta Site: Zee ETC Bollywood Business

On the whole, Doctor G is a good, class-appealing entertainer. It deserves to do well but having said that, it must be added that poor promotion will come in the way of the film realising its full potential. Many among the public do not know about the films release and several among them are not even aware of the films existence.

Ratings: 2/5 Review By: Grace Site: India Today

When the same story is presented with a new tadka every year, it feels stale. Ayushmann needs to step up his game and look for better roles. You can watch Doctor G just for its comedy. Before leaving, the film leaves us with one question – men dominate most departments of medicine, so, what’s the problem if women lord over gynaecology?

Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Umesh Site:Koimoi

Its two different movies pre & post the interval where the first half will give you a proper humour/drama balance but the second half would leave you thinking did you really like the first hour so much to enjoy this overall. All said and done, in a scene, Ayushmann Khurranas Uday says to Ayesha Kaduskars Kavya €œDont be stupid because youre not!€ & those are my exact feelings for this film defined in one line.

Ratings: 3.5/5  Review By: Saibal Site: NDTV

Doctor G is an entertaining comedy that handles the serious business of getting a clutch of important points across without losing its balance. Portions that possess depth and veracity propel the film forward. Ones that don’t do not do any permanent damage. Together, they add up to a film of infectious vivacity that also has provide food for thought

Ratings: 4/5  Review By: Times Of India Site: Times Of India

Anubhuti Kashyaps first mainstream film boasts of her ability to bring out a host of nuanced performances. She shows her potential to direct a story in a manner that can thoroughly engross the audience, while also taking it in a direction that makes it a conversation-starter for the right reasons. Every character in Doctor G, performs their part finely to pump life into the story. Go, watch this at a theatre near you, sehat ki liye achcha hai!

Ratings: 3/5  Review By: Saheli Site: Bollywood Bubble

In totality, Doctor G is a fun, light comedy film which is backed by a social taboo subject. Though the film is supposed to be about the struggles of male gynaecologists, it drifts apart in the course, thus making the main theme of the film secondary. Im going with 3 stars because of the plot and Shefali Shah and Sheeba Chaddhas extraordinary performances that made this movie entertaining.

Ratings: 2.5/5  Review By: Anna Site: Firstpost

Just when it appears that Doctor G has got its act together though, it wraps up with a ridiculous song accompanying the end credits that, in its filming, completely contradicts everything that had been said so far. Doctor G is the story of a man who learns to take women seriously. And along comes this song, with Uday/Ayushmann in baggy doctors garb singing Mera dil dhak dhak karta hai surrounded by women in tight, tiny attire in the same colour combination while Fatima/Rakul in a figure-hugging, revealing outfit heaves her bosom and thrusts it towards him as he lies down. If a film does not treat its own chosen theme with respect, how can we?

Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Titas Site: News18

Watch this film if you want to take a break from the actioners and mystery-thrillers that are gracing the big screen every other Friday of late. Despite its run-of-the-mill template, Doctor G manages to offer a kind of novelty and brings us back the Ayushmann Khurrana we have been yearning for.

Follow the latest news on the Trump assassination attempt .

It was the first attempted assassination of a current or former American president in the era of social media, and the conspiracy theories, finger-pointing and campaign gamesmanship moved at the speed of the internet, far faster than the actual facts of what transpired at former President Donald J. Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa.

The assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 left the nation in bewildered grief. Conspiracy theories would proliferate, of course, and Abraham Zapruder’s film of Kennedy’s last moments would be studied for decades. But first, there was mourning. The assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 would rock the public consciousness again, leaving Americans wondering what would become of their country.

But in the era of memes, X posts, Truths, Threads and TikTok, introspection was never going to be the dominant mood. Rage, blame, even comedy were the watchwords of 2024. A picture of Mr. Trump, fist aloft, American flag fluttering overhead, became iconic in an instant.

Within minutes of the first televised images of Mr. Trump grabbing his wounded ear on Saturday, voices on the left were calling it staged, though they were hardly household names.

Not long after, far bigger names on the right, including Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, a finalist to be Mr. Trump’s running mate, had settled on the argument that Democrats had set the stage for an attempted assassination by framing the 2024 election as a battle between the forces of democracy and the soldiers of fascism. Of course someone was going to take a shot, these conservatives said.

Before anyone knew a thing about the man who had pulled the trigger, Mr. Trump’s most senior surrogates, including Mr. Vance and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, were blaming President Biden and Democrats.
