Editing isn’t my superpower; it is my writing weakness . It’s painful and tedious, but it can transform a bad or ok research paper into an excellent one. And while no online editing tool can replace a human’s eyes for mistakes, several free websites and tools make editing more straightforward (so, we spend less time proofreading until our life force drains out). 

When I first started tutoring, I began looking for editing and revising resources for writers. I’ve expanded my list over the years, but last year I got an angry email. 

It read, “I WANT A FREE PLAGIARISM CHECKER!”

Aside from the fact that writing an email in all capital letters was not polite, I was curious. The person who wrote it asked me about a blog post from 2 years ago.  On my list of free editing tools was a plagiarism checker. 

I clicked the link in my blog post and went back to the plagiarism checker, and now it wasn’t free. Now, that at least explained why the email was in capital letters. My list was outdated (which is a significant blogging no-no).

#1 grammarly editor.

Grammarly  https://www.grammarly.com  corrects contextual spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and style. You can use it in MS Word, Google Docs, and your desktop. It also tells you the text’s emotion (tone) and formality.

One of the things I love about Grammarly is that you can change your language preference, which is helpful when I’m working with someone who is writing in British, Canadian, or Australian English. Spelling and punctuation change depending on which form of English you use.

The premium account includes more awesome features like a plagiarism checker, suggestions for different phrases, and how to make your writing more concise.

You can see grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes in red (all part of the free account) in the picture below. The words highlighted in blue are writing style suggestions (this is a premium account feature).

Since I often write for work, whether tutoring, blogging, or writing fiction, GRAMMARLY PREMIUM IS A MUST-HAVE editing tool. If you can afford it, it will replace many other tools you need, plus the more you use it, the less often you’ll make writing errors. 

#2 Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor https://hemingwayapp.com / scores the readability of your writing. It shows the grade level a person needs to be at to read your essay. Also, it highlights the things in your writing that you can change to make your writing clearer. 

All writing (even academic writing) should be clear and easy to understand. The example below is a part of the first draft of a blog post I wrote.  My readability score is on the right. My text is highlighted in different colors.

The elements that Hemingway Editor highlights are the things that determine your readability score. On the right side, you can see that each of these things is highlighted in different colors.

  • Blue — adverbs
  • Green— passive voice

  • Red (Pink) — sentences that are very hard to read

Hemingway App marks these in your writing. Then you can edit your text there. If you like the free online tool you can also buy the desktop app.  I have only used the free online tool, and I find it suits me fine.   Hemingway Editor is a good place to start with revising your writing. But nothing can replace a person when it comes to revision. Don’t rely on Hemingway alone.

#3 Language Tool

While there are several free grammar checker alternatives to Grammarly, I am only adding one here: Language Tool https://languagetool.org/ because it checks texts in 20 languages. Like Grammarly, Language Tool points out grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. It lets you see any problems with redundant words, and it checks for consistency.

Language Tool is a good choice for any international writer whose native language differs from the language they are writing in because it lets you set the language of your text and your native language (this is labeled mother language). When you do, that Language Tool looks for words that are similar in both languages but mean different things.

You can see in the image below that unlike Grammarly; Language Tool detected my acronyms as misspellings. Language Tool’s reading capability isn’t as advanced as Grammarly’s.

But its language settings make this free editing tool unique. 

#4 Cliché Finder

Cliché Finder  https://www.clichefinder.net/  looks at your text and finds clichés. Clichés are common expressions that people overuse because they are a quick way to convey a concept or idea to another person. For example, Laughter is the best medicine.

The problem with clichés is when they appear in writing, they make your writing seem amateurish. A better way to write is to describe what you mean. Cliché Finder analyzes pieces of writing up to 10,000 characters(not words) and finds clichés, as well as pointing out alternative word choices. #5 Wordcounter

Wordcounter https://wordcounter.net/ examines the words in your paper and reports how frequently you use words. You’ll find out if you repeat certain words too many times in your writing. It helps you determine if you want to change them or remove them.

To use Wordcounter, copy your text and paste it in the text box, and then click go. Wordcounter analyzes your words and generates a report.

But, if you’re writing an academic paper with subject-area vocabulary, don’t try to change too many of those words. It’s vocabulary you need to use in your paper. Wordcounter is a good guide for you, but make your own judgments about when to change words.

Typely https://typely.com/ is a free editing tool designed to help you find mistakes with language use like redundant words, oxymorons, hedging words, apologizing, sounding pretensions, reducing jargon, and spelling errors. It also helps you see when something is illogical. However, they state on their website that Typely is not a grammar checker,  “Typely does not do grammar checking because it’s hard and almost impossible to get right. The aim for Typely is to be precise and reliable.” Typely focuses on helping you improve the prose in your text. After De–Jargonizer analyzes your text, you’ll see your results in a box on the right side. It measures the percentage of common, mid-frequency, and low-frequency words. If you look at the text, you’ll see the font is color-coded so you can figure out which words you should change. 

  • Black =Common Words
  • Orange= Mid-Frequency
  • Red= Low-Frequency

Also, in the box, you’ll see a score that represents the percentage of people who will understand your text. My blog post scored 95% of 100% meaning most people will comprehend it.

#8 citation machine.

Citation Machine https://www.citationmachine.net/ is a website where you can type in your source information and get the correct reference style for the American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) formats.

There are two ways to get a source citation; the first is to select one of the buttons: Website, Book, or Journal and paste in the following information:

  • For the website- -type in the keywords or URL
  • For the Book- -type in the book title or ISBN
  • For the Journal- type in the title or Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

The second way is to fill out an online form that requires additional information, such as author, publisher, publication date, and more. The manual citation will give you a more precise reference, so I recommend using it for your research paper. Citation machine lets you copy both in-text citations and a reference list. You can even save your list of sources, and create a reference list.

The downside to Citation Machine is that you must watch an ad and click on it every 3 or 4 uses. If you want to avoid the ads and check your paper for plagiarism, you can upgrade to a paid account. 

#9 Que Text

Plagiarism is one of the worst academic crimes a person can commit, and it can cost you a failing grade, a failed course, and even expulsion from a university. QueText https://www.quetext.com / analyzes a piece of writing to spot plagiarism. QueText underlines pieces of plagiarized text and shows links to the original content. 

I copied and pasted the draft of a blog post I published in the screenshot below. The underlined words show you what was plagiarized, and on the right side, you can see the source it came from (my website).

While it’s a great resource, I hesitate to put QueText on my list because the free account has a limit on searches, and it’s extremely limited: 5 searches and 2500 words total. However, I decided to include it because the Pro-Basic account is $69 per year, and it checks up to 200 pages per month. If you don’t have access to a plagiarism checker via your school or university, QueText’s Pro Basic account is a bargain for what it does.

Choose Your Favorite Online Editing Tools 

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by these different choices for editing tools, so my advice is to choose 2-3 editing and revision tools. Look for the ones that help you the most, whether revising, grammar checking, or citations.

When I started, the 3 free online editing tools I used were the free account of Grammarly, Hemingway Editor, and Citation Machine.  Grammarly is my favorite, so I upgraded to Grammarly Premium to get more writing style suggestions and plagiarism checks. I eliminated the need for other writing style tools and a plagiarism checker when I did that.  It’s all a matter of choice, what aspects of editing do you need help with the most? A selection of tools for academic writing – from collaborating, time-tracking and project management to finding the perfect phrase or translation. We are continuously updating this list (latest update: April 2023).

I often get asked about my favourite academic writing tools. That’s why I compiled this scientific tools list for you with 19 great tools to support your academic writing. You can use all these scientific research tools for free and some of them have paid versions with additional features.

Just one word of caution: Exploring new academic writing tools can be a time-suck and distract you from getting your actual writing done. If you are one of those people who spend hours signing up for new software for academic writing and getting it set up, only to abandon the tool a few days or weeks later – then be careful reading this scientific tools list, and don’t get overenthusiastic. 😉

By the way, I don’t have any affiliation with any of the academic writing tools listed below, and none of these are affiliated links.

Here, we go, 19 tools for academic writing and scientific research I recommend in no particular order:

ACADEMIC Writing tools

1. writefull.

This proof-reading tool for scientific texts is powered by AI and big data. You can integrate the Writefull app into Word or Overleaf for free. A reader of the blog brought my attention to this tool (thank you so much!) and I’ve only recently started using it, so I can’t give you a full-blown review just yet but so far the results are promising. Writefull is owned by Digital Science, a company that has released several Open Science apps, such as figshare, Overleaf and Altmetric. 

2. Phrasebank

Created by Dr John Morley from “The University Language Center” of Manchester University, the Phrasebank is a database of common phrases used in papers, dissertations and grant proposals – a real goldmine!

The phrases are organised both by the common sections in a paper such as the Introduction, Methods, Results or Discussion section. For example, in the tab for the Introduction section, one can find entries for “establishing the importance of the topic for the world or society” or “identifying a knowledge gap in the field of study”. If you click on the latter, you can find among others the following suggested phrases: “It is still unclear whether…”, “However, the behaviour of X has not yet been investigated” and “Causal factors leading to X remain speculative”.

You can also look for phrases by choosing a general language function. Some of the choices are “being cautious”, “describing trends”, “signalling transition”.   

The Phrasebank is very useful to get inspiration for new wording but I do not endorse all entries. Sometimes you find language that is a bit clunky or overly complicated so do use your own judgement when you browse this academic writing tool. 3. Thesaurus.com

If you’re looking for synonyms, thesaurus.com is the best online thesaurus I’ve found so far. It divides the synonyms based on different meanings of the word and indicates the relevance of the synonym by using three shades of orange.

Just one word of caution: Don’t fall into the trap of using too many synonyms in your academic writing. Being precise is so much more important than varying the words you are using in your writing. In particular for field-specific terminology, I advise against using synonyms .

This is a hot tip for researchers who need to transcribe interviews (hello, social scientists!), who like to record research ideas or those who like to write by dictating text into their phone. Otter is an AI-based transcription tool that works for English language recordings. The quality of the transcriptions is comparable to other transcription services using AI, meaning they are often not accurate and can give nonsensical, even comical results — especially when the recorded voice has a strong or unusual accent. Still, the automated and quick transcriptions (real time transcriptions are available too!) can be a good starting point and are a huge time saver. What’s cool about Otter compared to its competitors is that they give you 300 minutes of transcriptions per month for free!

There are many online dictionaries but Linguee is my favourite for academic writing. It suggests a translation on the basis of previous translations published on the internet.  Therefore, this dictionary is especially great if you’re looking to not only translate a word but a certain turn of phrase or idiom. Linguee translates to and from English in over 20 languages. An essential academic writing tool for all non-native English speakers!

ACADEMIC WRITING TOOLS FOR Collaboration AND CO-WRITING

6. authorea.

The magazine “ TechCrunch ” describes Authorea as “a Google Docs for scientists”. On the academic writing platform, you can write, edit, and insert citations, figures and data. And it’s great for collaborative writing: Co-authors can access the same text at the same time, track the changes they made, insert comments and even live-chat during writing sessions. Documents can be imported from LaTeX and Word and exported as LaTeX, Word and PDF documents. You can also submit your article as a bioRxiv preprint straight from the Authorea platform. This software for academic writing is free for up to ten documents with limited sharing options.

7. Overleaf

Overleaf is to LaTeX users, what Authorea (see tool #6) is to Word users: an online editor that allows you to access and collaborate on your writing projects from anywhere. You can, for example, invite others to comment on your work. Overleaf offers some other neat collaborative writing features, such as a track-changes function, but – unfortunately – only on the paid plan. LaTeX may seem a bit intimidating at first but you actually get the hang of it quite fast (and feel like a coder 😎). Also, in my experience, you save a lot of time formatting your text (and feel smug about it when you talk to Word users 😁).

Slack is a chat tool that you can use in your lab or with your collaborators. Used in the right way, it allows you to save time by cutting down on emails and create a group atmosphere even if the members are not working in the same location. You can easily add files to the chats and create different channels for subgroups or certain topics. There also exist virtual communities on Slack you can join, such as the New PI Slack community for Assistant professors around the world. 

Loom is a great scientific research tool when you want to share a quick video with a colleague, student or collaborator. This could be a recorded presentation or lecture, your comments on the paper of a co-author, or a tutorial on using a piece of software. You can record your screen, camera and microphone. The neat thing is that after you’re done recording, Loom auto-generates a link you can share.

Academic writing tools for Productivity and project management

Toggl is a time-tracking app that you can install on your phone and computer. There’s only one way of knowing how long certain writing tasks typically take you, and that is by tracking the time they took you to complete . Time-tracking has another great advantage: You can identify time-sucks in your day. And these may be less obvious than you think.

I like to use Toggl for time-tracking because it’s quick to use and integrates with various other scientific research tools I am using. You just need to click the big red power button to start or stop a recording and assign tracked times to different projects. This scientific research tool has paid plans but for most people the free basic plan will be sufficient.

Are you easily tempted to check your phone when you really should be writing? This app called Forest may be just right for you then. Once installed on your phone, you can start planting a virtual tree whenever you want to focus. It grows from a little plant to a full-grown tree. When you pick up your phone and leave the app, the tree dies. This way, you can build your forest representing the time you have spent on focused work (or quality time with your family and friends…). I’m not using Forest myself, but I’ve heard that it works really as an academic writing tool well for some people. Give it a go!  

12. Focusmate

As Forest (see tool #11), Focusmate is an app to help you stay focused. Instead of  gamification, the concept of Focusmate is based on social accountability. Here is how it works: You schedule a 50-minute virtual co-writing session with another Focusmate member, turn on your webcam when your session starts, greet your temporary co-worker and then get to work silently.

Even though being filmed while working is a little strange in the beginning, co-writing sessions work really well for a lot of researchers. This is why we offer co-writing sessions as part of our academic writing program, the Researchers’ Writing Academy, as well.

13. Cold Turkey

If Forest (tool #11) or Focusmate (#12) don’t get you to focus on your writing, you may need to go Cold Turkey . This software for academic writing blocks any other application and turns your computer into a typewriter. You can choose whether you want Cold Turkey to prevent you from digital distractions for a certain amount of time or until you’ve hit a certain word count. With the paid version, you can even access integrated productivity soundtracks and text formatting.

Trello is an excellent project management tool for your academic writing, which you can use for managing each of your writing projects, for creating a publication pipeline and as a daily and weekly to-do list. Trello is a great introduction into project management because it’s a lot easier to learn and use than most other project management software. For each project called a “Board”, you can create different “lists”, which are vertical collection of “cards”, which you can move between lists. You can add due dates, checklist lists, links, files and text to each card. To work collaboratively, you can leave comments on cards and assign them to members on your team. You can also use Trello as a brainstorming tool, using the cards just as you would use post-it notes.

Members of my online course, the Researchers’ Writing Academy , get access to Trello templates I created to easily manage their publication pipeline, the writing process for each of their scientific papers and all of their other daily, weekly and monthly tasks and projects.

15. Todoist

Todoist is an alternative to Trello (see tool #16) or can be used in addition. It’s an online to-do list organiser and project management tool that comes as an app and browser version. You can organise your tasks in projects and schedule them for a certain day. This academic writing tool shows you today’s tasks as well as those for the next seven days. It also tracks your productivity, i.e. how many tasks you have completed.

Feedly is a neat RSS feed manager that helps you stay up to date with the scientific literature. Instead of getting email alerts from journals (because who wants to get more emails…) you can view and organise the literature you are interested in by following journals’ RSS feeds. You can not only use this for scientific literature but also subscribe to blogs, for example the one you’re reading right now, by simply putting the URL in the Feedly search: https://annaclemens.com/blog .

Are you a mindmapper? Then you need Xmind , a free mindmapping and brain-storming tool. It’s intuitive, looks good and does exactly what you want a mindmapping tool to do. The free version allows for embedding of hyperlinks, images, attachments, so you can really use it however you like! That’s all I can really say about it as I’m not using mindmapping myself. But I know scientists who swear by it!

18. Audemic

Audio formats have become so popular (I’m a big podcast lover myself!) so it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that there now is an audio tool available for the scientific literature too: Audemic . This tool — completely free to use for individual researchers — creates summaries for you (that go beyond the abstract), lets you skip sections, highlight text and take notes while listening.

There are a few reference managers for your academic writing to choose from, some of which cost money. Zotero is free, open-source and doesn’t lack in functionality. You can easily save references from your browser, organise them in folders and with tags and create bibliographies with the right style. You can also create a citation library with your co-authors or share your library with others.

That’s it: 19 academic writing apps and scientific research tools to support your writing for free! However, the best academic writing software won’t make you more productive if you don’t rely on a streamlined writing process and if you aren’t using your writing sessions effectively. ‘We authors paid a heavy price’: Journal retracts all 23 articles in special issue

A journal has retracted an entire special issue over concerns the guest-edited papers underwent a “compromised” peer review process. 

In a supplement to Volume 337 Issue 1 of Annals of Operations Research, 23 papers were retracted with the same statement: 

The Editor-in-Chief and the publisher have retracted this article. The article was submitted to be part of a guest-edited issue. An investigation by the publisher found a number of articles, including this one, with a number of concerns, including but not limited to compromised editorial handling and peer review process, inappropriate or irrelevant references or not being in scope of the journal or guest-edited issue. Based on the investigation’s findings the Editor-in-Chief therefore no longer has confidence in the results and conclusions of this article.

The articles in the guest-edited issue, Prescriptive Analytics Using Machine Learning and Mathematical Programming for Sustainable Operations Research, were published between June 2022 and October 2023. 

A landing page for the issue doesn’t appear on the journal’s website because the concerns came before the special issue was completed, a representative from Springer told us in an email. They didn’t provide information on how these concerns came to light or the specifics of the investigation’s findings, saying the investigation is still ongoing. 

The guest editor, Abbas Mardani , is a researcher at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He was named in the top 1% of Highly Cited Researchers in 2021 and 2022 in Clarivate’s Web of Science . Several of his papers have comments on PubPeer questioning the theorems. Mardani did not respond to our request for comment. 

Angappa Gunasekaran , a researcher at Penn State Harrisburg in Dauphin County, and a co-author of one of the retracted papers, “ Prescriptive analytics applications in sustainable operations research: conceptual framework and future research challenges ,” called the retraction a “social taboo.” 

His colleague, Deepa Bhatt Mishra, disagreed with the retraction, according to the notice. “I fully support Dr. Deepa Bhatt Mishra and my other co-authors in placing the blame on the publisher,” Gunasekaran told us in an email. He denied having any connection to Mardani prior to submitting the article.

Gunasekaran said his research group submitted a draft to the call for papers posted on the website of Annals of Operations Research .  They expected “the individual responsible for editing the special issue is a respected scholar in their field.” He continued: 

It is not the responsibility of the authors to know how the papers are processed, or the circumstances under which decisions are made. All we know is that our submission underwent more than two rounds of rigorous revisions and took quite some time. Unfortunately, we received a retraction email from the publisher that lacked clarity and transparency, and in the end, we authors paid a heavy price for the irresponsible actions of Guest Editor, the EIC of the journal, and the publisher. 

Last July, the journal retracted 81 papers from another special issue , using the same notice as the recent retractions. “These papers comprise the one other special issue in the journal that the Springer Nature Research Integrity unit identified as part of their ongoing investigations work,” a spokesperson for the publisher said. “We are committed to ensuring the integrity of the publication record and these retractions reflect our ongoing work in that regard.”

Shame on these editors and specially journals who took lot of fees and retract publication. Authors have to add disclaimer before publishing any article. Once author published any research work, if there is any problem with publication, editor has to resign and journal have to return all publication fee to authors.

What is the responsibility of the EiC of such incidents keep reoccurring?

I am not surprised at the Springers publishers recalling already published articles in their various Journals . A prerequisite for an author to first submit his written paper to a group of people to proof read where a price of 300 USD is charged is worry some to a good academic. Springers publisher has lost academic integrity for some years now.

“It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer” So, in this special issue how many articles were wrongly retracted?

After Biden-Trump debate: 'Presidential debates should be a thing of the past' | Letters

In the aftermath of the first debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, it is fair to say that Biden had a bad night. Biden needed to reassure the American people, including those within his own party, that he was up to the job of being president. In this debate, Biden failed in his mission. He appeared old and feeble at the outset, and although he did better in the second half of the debate, most will remember his poor start. Trump appeared more vigorous, but he spewed a constant torrent of lies, and failed to answer direct questions. Trump was not good either, but in comparison to Biden's weak performance, Trump won the debate.

Biden's bad night has caused panic among some Democrats, who wonder if he should stay atop the ticket. Other Democrats still believe in Biden, and point out that the sitting president often loses the first debate, but recovers after it. They believe that Biden, even if somewhat diminished, would be a better president than Trump.

The bottom line is whether Americans will vote for democracy, that is government by the people, whether they like Biden or not, or will they trash democracy, and vote for an authoritative self-centered Trump.

I think the presidential debate last night was a disaster for Joe Biden and the Democrats.

Biden looked frail, weak and his voice was raspy and at times hard to understand. He was unable to articulate all the good he has done in the last four years. Yes, this was difficult with Trump lying constantly and berating Biden because for his loss in 2020.

Biden seems to be showing cognitive decline. Yes, he was good at the State of the Union, but it's up and down. The Democrats need to think about this, because Biden is not going to improve, and there are many worthy Democrats who could replace Biden at the Democratic National Convention in August, including our own Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, among others.

We need a formidable opponent to beat Trump, because I believe he is a malignant bully and is extremely dangerous to our democracy.

Presidential debates should be a thing of the past.

From 1776 through the 1950s, people, deeds and news didn’t travel with nearly the speed they do now, so public political debates were the only way for presidential candidates to present their ideas to a public starved for information.

Flash forward to now, and we are literally barraged on an almost second-by-second basis by mail, telephone, radio, TV, and internet, with talking heads from nearly every persuasion, strafing our eyes, ears, and brains with more information and non-information about candidates than a person can ever fully process.

The New York Times Editorial Board is calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race after his disastrous debate performance Thursday night with former President Donald Trump.

Biden attempted to reframe the debate at a boisterous campaign rally in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, where he addressed the sparring match with Trump. "I know I'm not a young man − to state the obvious," Biden said. "Folks, I don't walk as easy as I used to. I don't speak as smoothly as I used to. I don't debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know: I know how to tell the truth."

Biden vowed not to drop out of the campaign and said he was confident he could do the job if reelected. If he were to serve a full second term, he would be 86 by the time he left office. Trump, 78, and Biden are the oldest presumptive nominees for president in American history.
