Master's Thesis

Writing a thesis is optional for some master’s programs and not required.  There are abundant opportunities for personalized interaction with faculty through research courses, independent studies, and seminars.  If a student chooses to write a thesis, it requires eight courses and either two research credits (5970), or in some cases with program specific approval, one research credit (5970) and one independent study (5990). Two credits must be completed for a letter grade for successful completion of the master’s thesis.

A thesis or research paper based on joint work with other researchers is allowed, provided that a unique and separate document is presented by each degree candidate. The candidate must include a concise account of his or her contribution to the whole work. Authorship of a master’s thesis or research paper by more than one degree candidate is not allowed.

University Style Guide for Master’s Thesis

Please submit your thesis electronically at this time to Graduate Engineering. Directions will be sent via email after the graduation application closes for that period.

Font, Spacing, and Margin Requirements Any non-italic font 10-12 points in size should be used. Headings may be larger.  For enhanced screen readability, use Arial (10pt), Courier New (10pt), Georgia (11pt), Times New Roman (12 pt), or Verdana (10pt) font.  For footnotes, figures, citations, charts and graphs, a font of 8 point or larger should be used.  Italic type may be used for quotations, words in a foreign language, occasional emphasis, or book titles.  For the sake of readability, it is recommended that the text of the dissertation be double-spaced (except for footnotes, long quoted passages, and lists of tables and figures, which are single-spaced).  If desired, authors may chose to single-space the abstract and/or thesis manuscript.

Allow one and one-half inches for the left margin and one inch for all other margins. All text, including page numbers, must fit within these margins. Please remember to include the title page in the margin allowance. Organization of the Manuscript Pages must appear in the following order:

Title Page Dedication (optional) Acknowledgment (optional) Abstract (optional) Table of Contents (mandatory for theses 50 pages or longer) List of Tables (optional) List of Figures/Illustrations (optional) Main Text Appendices (optional) Bibliography/Works Cited

Title Page The Title Page must follow the sample format . The author’s full legal name must appear on the Title Page and the completed thesis must have electronic signatures when deposited electronically to Graduate Engineering. The sample shows how to list a co-supervisor if you have one. If not, please omit from your Title Page and list only the supervisor and director/chair’s names and signatures. Some Master’s Program’s have a Program Director, while others only have their Graduate Group Chair. If you are unsure if you have a director or chair, please talk with your program coordinator/administrator so you have that person’s title listed properly on the Title Page. Although the Title Page counts as page “i” of the preliminary pages, no page number appears on the Title Page. A Table of Contents m ust be included if the thesis is 50 pages or longer.

Pagination All pages (except the Title Page: page i) must have a page number. For the preliminary pages (dedication, acknowledgements, table of contents, lists of graphs, tables, and illustrations), use small Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, …).  For the text and appendices (if any), use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, …). Remember that page numbers must also appear within the margins specified above.

Other Requirements For citations, footnotes, references, and grammar, you may follow the guidelines in the Chicago Manual of Style, the MLA Handbook, or the appropriate manual in your field of study.

Graduate Student Spotlights: Spring 2024

Headshot of graduate student with white background

Athena Cisneroz

Program Year: 2023-present

Lab/PI: Dr. Elva Arredondo

Research Emphasis: Physical and Mental Health Research

Hometown: Los Gatos, CA

What’s your favorite part of the program? The opportunity to become more connected to my Hispanic/Latina identity and culture through my research. The chance to gain teaching experience as a teaching assistant (thank you Dr. Ulloa!), and provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants in my mentor’s lab.

What advice would you give to an incoming student? Be mindful of where you sit on your first day of advanced statistics because you might just meet your besties! Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for guidance or support: your mentor, professors, peers, second-years, doctoral students, and postdocs are all resources. Be kind to others and share resources; we’re each other’s future colleagues after all!

What do you like to do in your free time? When I’m out and about, I like to…hike, continue my search for the perfect cafe study spot, and explore (get lost around) SD with friends. When I’m feeling creative, I like to…sing, sketch, and write. In my downtime, I like to…read high fantasy romance novels beside a purring kitty.

Fun Fact: I have a B.A. in Studio Art with a Graphic Design Emphasis.

Hometown: Chula Vista, CA

What’s your favorite part of the program? bonding with other grad students and presenting at conferences

What advice would you give to an incoming student? Celebrate your wins no matter how big or small

What do you like to do in your free time? Try new restaurants

Fun fact: If I wasn’t in grad school I would’ve been a flight attendant.

Graduate student standing outside by a lake

Devanshi Upadhyaya

Lab/PI: Dr. Thierry Devos

Research emphasis: Social Psychology

Hometown: India

What’s your favorite part of the program? I find immense value in two key aspects: The mentorship provided by my PI and the supportive environment of my cohort. Under my PI’s guidance, I experience daily growth, both academically and personally. The opportunity to conduct research and learn under such incredible mentorship is truly enriching. Additionally, being part of a talented and supportive cohort is another highlight. I cherish the time spent with them! Learning together and witnessing the mutual support and encouragement, is truly heartwarming.

What advice would you give to an incoming student? Although I’m still navigating my journey, there is one aspect I would share: this program offers an exceptional research-based experience that not a lot of graduate schools provide. Make the most of it! Embrace each day, network actively, delve into diverse research topics, and use this opportunity to discover your strengths and preferences as a researcher. It’s a chance to explore what excites you and what areas you might want to explore further. Most importantly, don’t forget to take time out for yourself!

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy going for long walks with music playing in the background. I also like being outdoors or close to nature. Reading is a big part of my downtime, too—I love getting lost in a good book.  And when I just want to relax, I’ll rewatch episodes of Modern Family, The Office, or The Big Bang Theory.

Fun fact: I’m a huge Bollywood fan girl and can recite the entire dialogue from my favorite movie!

Plastics have become indispensable in our modern world, serving diverse purposes from packaging to electronics. However, the pervasive issue of plastic pollution, with microplastics now ubiquitous across the globe, poses serious threats to both environmental and human health. Despite this, conventional recycling methods often fall short due to cost constraints and technical challenges, necessitating a shift towards innovative, eco-friendly polymer solutions.

This thesis delves into a vast chemical landscape, spanning hundreds of millions of commercially available and theoretical monomers–a number impossible to explore experimentally–in pursuit of novel polymers capable of addressing the shortcomings of traditional plastics. Employing digital reaction pathways, advanced genetic algorithms, and cutting-edge machine learning models, we aim to identify polymers that not only meet stringent recycling criteria but also possess the mechanical and thermal properties requisite for practical application.

Our exploration extends to predicting polymer solubility, streamlining experimental data analysis, and leveraging machine learning algorithms to assess monomer toxicity, thus refining the selection process. By navigating this intricate hypothetical polymer design space, we strive to provide insight to our polymer chemist collaborators, assisting them in uncovering the elusive "needle in a haystack" polymer that could revolutionize the plastics industry and mitigate the global burden of plastic pollution.

The Fighter uses their Maul to knock down their opponent, the Rogue dances around with their Rapier to find their foe’s weak point, and the Barbarian swings a Greataxe through two enemies with a single blow. Every character in D&D has a unique flare they bring to combat, and that’s reflected in the new Weapon Mastery feature in the 2024 Player’s Handbook !

Let’s explore these fresh ways to utilize your weapons in the upcoming core rulebook revamp!

What is Weapon Mastery?

Mastery properties overview.

A barbarian, ranger, and monk face off against gnolls

Weapon Mastery is a class feature shared between some martial classes that reflects their specialization with certain types of weapons.

Each weapon in the Equipment section of the 2024 Player’s Handbook  lists a mastery property in addition to the weapon’s regular properties. If the weapon meets the requirements in your class's Weapon Mastery feature, you can learn its mastery property and use it in combat.

But learning a mastery property isn't permanent. If you stumble across a shiny new +1 Longsword and want to learn its mastery properties instead, don’t worry! During a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and swap out one of your weapon choices at the end of the rest.

The number of mastery properties you can learn is specified in your class's version of the Weapon Mastery feature. Rogues, rangers, and paladins can only access two mastery properties at a time, whereas barbarians and fighters start with two and three, respectively, and eventually gain access to more mastery properties, as detailed in their Features table.

At level 1, Barbarians, Fighters, Paladins, Rangers, and Rogues get access to the mastery properties for certain types of weapons, as listed below:

  • Barbarian: Simple and Martial Melee weapons
  • Fighter: Simple and Martial weapons
  • Paladin: Based on weapon proficiencies (Simple and Martial weapons)
  • Ranger: Based on weapon proficiencies (Simple and Martial weapons)
  • Rogue: Based on weapon proficiencies (Simple and Martial weapons with the Finesse or Light property)
Mastering Weapon Mastery Some subclasses allow you to access more mastery properties. For example, the Soulknife Rogue can use the Vex mastery property with their Psychic Blades and it doesn’t count toward their learned Weapon Mastery limit.

How to Use Weapon Mastery Properties

If you’re wielding a weapon and have learned its mastery property, you’ll be able to use that mastery property every turn when you make an attack with the weapon.

Different mastery properties have different triggers. For example, Cleave requires you to hit a creature with a melee attack roll while Graze triggers when you miss a creature with an attack roll.

Unlike some abilities, there’s no limit to how many times mastery properties can be used per Short or Long Rest, so go nuts!

A rogue jumps through a window brandishing a dagger

Below, we’ll cover each of the eight mastery properties included in the 2024 Player’s Handbook . We’ll even throw in some tips to help you brainstorm ideas for your new characters!

A greataxe

Example Weapon: Greataxe

If you’ll be wading into the thick of battle, you’ll want to consider grabbing a weapon with the Cleave property.

These heavy weapons can slash through opponents. If you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can make a second attack against a creature within 5 feet that is also within your reach. When you hit with the second attack, you can roll your weapon’s damage, but you don’t add your ability modifier unless it’s negative.

This is excellent in combination with the Halberd , which has Reach and Cleave, allowing you to Cleave into enemies in an extended range.

Example Weapon: Greatsword

Graze is an excellent way to increase the consistency of your weapon damage.

If you miss a creature with your weapon, you deal damage equal to the ability modifier you used to make the roll. This pairs well with abilities that allow you to make a lot of attacks, like the Fighter’s Extra Attacks features or the Polearm Master or Sentinel feats.

It just goes to show that when a weapon is big enough, you don't  really  need to aim where you're swinging.

Example Weapon: Dagger

To explain the Nick property, we should briefly cover that being able to attack twice while dual-wielding Light weapons has subtly changed in the 2024 Player’s Handbook . Instead of being covered under Melee Attacks, the rules for dual-wielding Light weapons are covered under the Light weapon property.

It still functions the same way: When you make an attack with a weapon that has the Light property, you can use a Bonus Action to make one attack with a different Light weapon you’re wielding.

The Nick mastery property allows you to make the additional attack you receive from wielding two Light weapons as part of the initial attack action.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you can make a third attack as a Bonus Action, as the Light property specifies you only get one extra attack. But, while it may not pump your damage, this frees up your Bonus Action to use class/species abilities, such as the Rogue’s Cunning Action, while still getting an additional attack in.

Example Weapon: Greatclub

Sometimes giving an enemy a simple shove off a cliff or into a pit of lava is all you need to win an otherwise tough encounter! The Push mastery property allows you to launch a creature you hit 10 feet straight away from you without a save .

Not only is this great when combined with environmental hazards, it's also great for escaping Opportunity Attacks. If you or a less tanky party member are being harassed by an enemy, you can push the enemy 10 feet away, which can allow you to create the space needed to escape unscathed.

Keep in mind that you can only push enemies Large or smaller, so don’t go getting stuck next to an Adult Black Dragon .

A mace

Example Weapon: Mace

If your job is to distract the enemies for long enough to let your blaster caster friends deal with them, Sap is a solid choice.

When you hit an enemy with an attack, this mastery property inflicts Disadvantage on your target’s next attack roll before the start of your next turn.

So, for heavily armored, tanky builds, your enemies will be so focused on trying to take you out that they won’t even see the Fireball coming.

Example Weapon: Light Crossbow

This mastery property is excellent for fast builds that like to flit across the battlefield. When you hit a creature and deal damage, you can reduce its Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn.

This combos excellently with the Light Crossbow, allowing you to take shots, damage your opponents, and then move to just out of range of their reduced Speed. Rinse and repeat until they look like a pin cushion.

It’s important to note that a creature’s Speed can’t be reduced by more than 10 feet with this property, so don’t expect to stand still, hit your enemy three times, and not get caught.

Example Weapon: Maul

This mastery property is for all those builds that love to wail on their enemies with multiple melee attacks.

When you hit a creature, you can force it to make a Constitution saving throw or fall Prone . The DC for this save is 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack plus your Proficiency Bonus.

So, a level 5 Fighter with a Maul could knock their opponent Prone with their first attack, then use their second attack and Action Surge to make multiple attacks with Advantage.

Just remember attacking Prone enemies outside of 5 feet actually gives the attacker Disadvantage on their attack roll. So only use this ability if you or another melee-minded party member can take advantage of it.

Example Weapon: Shortsword

Having a weapon with Vex feels like a superior swordsman dancing around their opponent, striking at openings until the battle is won.

When you hit a creature and deal damage, this mastery property gives you Advantage on your next attack roll before the end of your next turn. This is an excellent way for Rogues to all but guarantee a Sneak Attack hit on their next turn.

The Student Becomes the Master

Weapon Mastery is a fun way to give martial characters more choice in combat. It also revamps the way weapons feel in D&D. We’re excited to share more of what you can expect from the 2024 core rulebooks, so stay tuned for additional guides previewing the 2024 Player’s Handbook , which is releasing September 17!

Very reminiscent of BG3 with things like topple and lacerate on martial classes.

This is a very very good change.

Martial classes should be given as much as they can to make them useful and tactically unique without giving them WoW esque spells like 4e did.

Push should be the same rules as shoving, so as long as the target is no more then one size larger then you, you get the effect

Been loving the idea of these ever since they popped up in the unearthed arcana versions of the new PHB. Great way to make the weapons feel more unique (I am looking at you pike/halberd/glaive), to set martial classes apart a bit and really encourage more strategy. I’ve already got a barbarian/fighter who does a lot of grappling and shoving, having it built into her weapon skills would be fab

UA Level 9 fighters can add other masteries to a weapon if they have the proper properties.  Topple needs Heavey, Reach, or Versatile.

Give a Glaive Topple

If attacking the prone target at 10' with glaive's reach property I am at disadvantage to hit the target?

think they may have misspoken in the video that dropped re: NICK. I definitely left with the impression that you could get in three attacks.

As of as this seems at first, remember these classes should still be as good as people that can throw fire balls, teleport, and who can just wish their enemies to death.

It wouldn't really make sense for the monk to get access to them, and I think they're giving it other things anyway. Plus, despite what everyone says, monk is actually a pretty good class IMO.

If scimitars have the nick property, they might become my new favorite weapon.

I agree. I think it will become a common homebrew if WoTC doesn't make it official.

The Weapon Master feat is a half-feat so the Monk can pick it up without too much trouble. Nick Scimitars are a fantastic option for them, getting you up to 6 attacks at level 11 before Haste and reactions.

Another solid option for them is Grappler - one fewer attack but they have a chance to get all the ones they do get at advantage, plus the ability to crazy-taxi enemies out of position with their high speed.

If you use a short-sword in one hand and a dagger in the other can you use both Vex and Nick at the same time ? (Doing your extra attack as part of the attack AND with advantage ?)

The weapon with the nick mastery, does it have to be your off-hand, or main hand weapon? Is there any benefit to dual-wielding weapons with the nick mastery. If there isn't, that's gorse. When I think of a dual-wielder, I think of them using matching weapons, not a short sword & dagger.
