National Instruments SD-WAN case study: Bandwidth up 1,500%

It's a nearly universal challenge facing enterprise WAN managers: Do more with less.

Luis Castillo, senior global network engineering manager at National Instruments (NI) -- an automated testing and measurement systems manufacturer based in Austin, Texas -- faced the same obstacle, causing frustration for Castillo's team and, as a result, NI employees.

"Typically, there's pressure to reduce WAN spend by about 2% year over year, but demand increases by 10% to 20% every year," Castillo said. "The numbers don't add up."

And the users suffered. With 88 sites worldwide, NI's mission-critical applications worked slowly for employees, if at all. Software releases from headquarters failed to reach some branch sites for hours. Frustrations ran high. So, as early as 2010, Castillo's team began looking for a way to use less expensive bandwidth in a more efficient way. They tested early software-defined WAN ( SD-WAN ) products -- hoping to offload some MPLS connectivity to inexpensive broadband links -- but found the technology lacked the necessary maturity for a large-scale deployment.

In 2016, NI revisited SD-WAN, evaluating 28 different platforms and ultimately selecting technology from Viptela, now a part of Cisco, for a proof of concept. But getting financial approval from NI's upper management required some intensive number crunching.

" SD-WAN is not cheap ," Castillo said. His team convinced corporate leadership to fund the project by committing to savings against its WAN portfolio, essentially promising short-term ROI.

The gambit paid off -- and then some. In the first full year of SD-WAN deployment alone, NI's MPLS spending decreased by 40% -- from $1.5 million to around $900,000. In 2019, NI slashed that figure by an additional $100,000. Meanwhile, Castillo reported that bandwidth increased 1,500%, with software updates that once took eight hours to push across the WAN finishing in as little as 10 minutes.

MPLS vs. SD-WAN architecture

Initially, NI aimed to use SD-WAN-enabled broadband connectivity to merely reduce its dependence on a single MPLS provider, potentially diversifying with less expensive, regional MPLS contracts. But the SD-WAN implementation presented Castillo -- a 25-year networking veteran -- with a plot twist he didn't anticipate.

"As much as it makes me uncomfortable, the data shows we don't need MPLS anymore," he said. "It causes more outages than anything else."

NI now plans to eventually phase MPLS out of its network entirely, relying on forward error correction and packet duplication features for voice traffic and other applications that are particularly sensitive to jitter and packet loss.

SD-WAN case study: Deployment advice

While Castillo urged other organizations to jump into SD-WAN "with both feet," he cautioned them to do their homework first.

"It's not an easy project," he said. "You do need a lot of engineering work behind it."

To optimize zero-touch deployment capabilities, for example -- a common SD-WAN selling point -- organizations must thoughtfully and rigorously engineer their internal standards and templates, Castillo added. Otherwise, they risk making each site's deployment a unique "snowflake," thus undercutting the benefits of the SD-WAN model .

"We had some very contentious conversations as we worked to standardize the process correctly and juggle tradeoffs," he said. "It's very easy to paint yourself into a corner and over- or underengineer something."

Because NI front-loaded time, effort and resources into designing and architecting its SD-WAN upfront, with the help of Cisco Services, Castillo said the actual implementation abstracted more network complexity than even he anticipated. While a team of nine once managed 1,000 routers individually, two people now manage them collectively via a policy-driven, centralized management console. The remaining team members are now free to focus on "more exciting things," such as Kubernetes and the cloud.

"It takes a lot of engineering work, but it's worth it," Castillo said. "We saved more money, got better performance and solved more problems than we ever expected. It's been hugely, hugely successful."

Inspyrus Platform on Oracle Cloud for National Instruments

Business Pain: National Instruments empowers customers with off-the-shelf software such as NI LabVIEW and modular cost-effective hardware and sells to a broad base of more than 30,000 different companies worldwide. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, NI has operations in more than 40 countries. National Instruments (NI) is a multi-national organization with operates around the globe with each region providing critical Accounts Payable (AP) and other financial services through tools like Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS).  Working with central oversight, each region has been faced with diverse and inconsistent AP processes despite their oversight processes.  To better facilitate their AP processes and to gain consistency and accuracy across all global regions, NI commissioned a project led by TekStream to build and implement an Oracle Cloud architecture to deploy a new AP solution, Inspyrus, designed to unify NI’s AP operations under a single standardized process. In an effort to reduce internal IT cost to maintain, manage, and monitor the Inspyrus platform resources, NI also engaged TekStream’s Managed Service Partner (MSP) program for these critical services. In addition, engaged in TekStream’s Premium Support program for tailored Inspyrus application solution support.

Key Pain Points:

  • Visibility on system uptime metrics and issue tracking
  • Metrics on hardware resources consumed to optimize sizing needs

How we fixed it: TekStream worked with NI’s resources to implement the Inspyrus platform within a secure private structure on an Oracle Cloud instance.  The environment was then integrated with multiple cloud and on-premise components with extensive security controls to provide a seamless AP management solution for EBS.   As part of the project, the environment and related process controls were evaluated and configured to ensure that they are supporting SOC II verification.

TekStream implemented the Inspyrus solution to address each area of NI’s operational, processes, and security concerns to provide consistency and high visibility of each regional AP process area.  The net result of the provided solution greatly improves ingestion, circulation and payment automation while also providing an analytics component that establishes extensive metrics on each area of the process so that bottlenecks are quickly identified and addressed.  The solution was deployed in a phased systematic approach with key processing center deployment each quarter.  At full deployment, 45 worldwide organizations and 6 regional processing centers are utilizing a consistent and highly effective AP solution.

With many customers, NI also needed assistance in managing the operations of the solution.  By engaging with TekStream, NI was able to redirect critical resources to other operational tasks while TekStream provides cost-effective long term Managed Services of their AP solution under a SOC II compliant operations maintaining the system environments and provide technical assistance to the NI team as necessary. Key Managed Service activities include:

  • Monitoring and triage of the delivered solution 24hours a day 7 days a week
  • Patch management: Operating Systems, database, and application
  • Issue remediation and Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Event Notification services
  • Quarterly reports for system issues, critical system uptime, and resource metrics
  • Daily external vulnerability scanning to ensure protection from outside attacks
  • Monthly internal-elevated vulnerability scanning to ensure deep system protection and security threats
  • Synthetic HTTP monitoring of critical URLs

TekStream was able to provide the needed global, next-generation, cloud-based AP processing tool that provided a single, modern user experience that incorporated best-in-class OCR, processing, workflow, and reporting capabilities to National Instruments.  By providing a Cloud-based solution and Managed Services to ensure the operational and ongoing excellence of the delivered environments, TekStream worked closely with the NI business and technical teams to drive a complete solution that allows NI to focus on their business rather than having to divert resources to ensure the provided solution maintains efficient operations.  The solution also ensures that the AP process works with multiple Oracle ERP systems in a seamless and integrated fashion.  All of this was accomplished with Inspyrus deployed on Oracle Cloud provided NI with the flexibility and capabilities they needed to streamline their AP processes, reduce overall costs, and turn AP into a strategic asset with TekStream’s MSP to ensure the consistent operation across all global regions.

Using IBM Aspera®’s patented high-speed transfer technology, NI synchronizes large software builds between teams around the world from its centralized data center in Austin, Texas to significantly accelerate its follow-the-sun development. The deployment has made development timelines and costs more predictable while reducing the risk of delivery. Now NI is more responsive to customers and ultimately develops innovative products and features faster.

To maintain an efficient and continuous development cycle, all updates to the code base from any of NI's remote sites need to be synchronized with its central data center, then synchronized back out to the remote offices.

The NI and Aspera teams worked together to develop a tailored solution for multi-site data transfer and synchronization to quickly and securely collect and distribute large software builds.

Today, more than 6,000 end users dispersed around the world need access to NI’s code bases and software builds. This includes 2,000 developers that work continually on code bases, product and test teams that need to access exports and installers, and sales and marketing teams that need to access full release packages. To maintain an efficient and continuous development cycle, all updates to the code base from any of the remote sites need to be synchronized with its central data center, then synchronized back out to the remote offices.

With each file ranging from 1 KB to 32 GBs in size, and an average size of .5 MB, NI’s code repository had grown to more than 300 TBs. Unreliable HTTP-based data transfers were forcing teams to wait several days to receive and work on the software builds, negatively impacting productivity and ultimately response times to customers.

The NI and Aspera teams worked together to develop a tailored solution for multi-site data transfer and synchronization to quickly and securely collect and distribute large software builds, even in countries that have restrictive network security and firewall policies and that are prone to high congestion, latency and packet loss.

The Aspera transfer server software with Aspera Sync is now deployed in 17 of its remote global locations, all without requiring changes to NI’s R&D workflows. The team is able to centrally monitor and manage the entire transfer environment using Aspera Console.

With Aspera, NI R&D teams can work continually on the latest software builds. Over the last 18 months, the build process was shortened from an average of four days down to four hours. The teams are able to be more responsive to customers and can innovate more quickly as a result of the predictable delivery timelines and costs, and due to reduced risks previously associated with the development build process.

The Aspera solution also helped address a critical, unexpected problem involving a significant system failure just prior to quarter close. Using Aspera, NI quickly recovered all its files in hours versus the typical four day recovery time, enabling it to meet its critical shipment deadline and recognize quarterly revenue.

Executive summary

National Instruments, a U.S.-based engineering company, had a solid global presence: offices in 20 countries, from France to Singapore. But their social presence was a patchwork of 57 different accounts that represented the brand world-wide — only 10 of which corporate had passwords for, and none of which were coordinated. To scale their social message globally, and to ensure regional offices were both responding to local needs and coordinating with corporate’s overarching message, National Instruments relied on the Khoros platform.

Corporate headquarters needed to build relationships with social media marketers across the globe to standardize the company’s social message and voice, but they wanted to keep the process collaborative, rather than single handedly take control from each international office. National Instruments also needed to both understand the intricacies of their audience and how to best reach each subset: audience demographic segmenting and audience targeting became effective ways for them to tailor the content and maximize the value of each campaign.

Khoros offered a way for everyone to collaborate on content and connect with the audience in an efficient, fan-facing way. As a result, National Instruments saw a 50% global reduction in time spent contributing to content, along with significant improvements in engagement and year-over-year followers. With the platform, National Instruments is now equipped with the tools it needs to report on content performance throughout its campaigns and quickly identify what type of content works for each of their regional offices.

When National Instruments (NI)—the US-based producer of automation equipment and virtual instrumentation software—created a functional safety logic solver module, NI-9350, it needed to be certified to the IEC 61508 standard.

Before the NI team found exida to certify the NI-9350, they had a problematic experience with another certification body based in Germany; the team described them as “adversarial,” and no contract was produced. They re-opened their search for an internationally accredited certification body, which led them to exida.

The team was not familiar with exida, so they examined this new choice carefully in risk review meetings, where they concluded that they had no reason to be concerned. They commenced working with the exida team, including Managing Director Dr. William Goble, and discovered that exida wanted to guide them to success right from the start. “Their follow-through and execution were consistent,” said Matt Griffin, NI Product Manager.

“NI used FPGA technology to implement a small logic solver without online software,” said Dr. William Goble. “This approach can provide fast response times.” However, the use of this new FPGA technology was a potential challenge for the NI team. Fortunately, exida has several experienced computer design engineers who have done FPGA projects and understand the potential functional safety issues. This allowed the exida assessors to get right to the critical design details and reference general solution techniques.

Once engineering process changes were made and the architectural design met the requirements, exida began compiling the Safety Case, a document that explains how the certification target meets all requirements of the referenced standards. (Completion of the Safety Case is somewhat iterative and is updated when new compliance evidence is completed.) After exida’s Evaluating Assessor approved the Safety Case, an independent Certifying Assessor successfully reviewed the project, and exida issued the SIL 3 certificate.
