My uncle bought me some story books and a book on painting. I also made a long list of books to buy in future. The stalls were crowded with people of all ages. I was thrilled to see that anybody could touch or read any book. I just rushed from one stall to another because I never saw so many books before. A Visit to a Book Fair: 250-300 Words

It was the biennial International Book Fair at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. My friends and I decided to visit the fair since the opportunity comes only once in two years.

We reached the gate of the venue as early as 10 a.m. and bought our tickets. There was a long queue of book lovers before the counter and it amazed me that even in this age of e-books there are people who read books.

After the security check, we headed towards the centre of the action – the different halls. On our way, We could see banners of different sizes, with the big publishers occupying the largest stalls. Apart from the local publishers, national and international publishers too featured in the fair.

We visited some of the stalls and were impressed by the huge collection of books which included story books, novels, books on anatomy, medicine and others.

Later on, we visited the other halls and made sure that we dropped in at the stalls of the international participants. There were food stalls too, to offer refreshments, and we relieved our fatigue by sipping hot coffee.

As hours passed by, the number of visitors also increased and it became difficult for us to move about freely within the stalls which were full of book lovers.

It was 8 p.m. when we started our journey back home. We were almost drenched in sweat though it was a January evening. We were happy to carry the heavy bundles of books that we had bought and wished that such book fairs would be held more frequently so that people would be inspired to read more.

Essay on a Book Fair I Visited, 500 Words

By: Haque | For class 9-12 | 15-05-’22

Introduction: Books are the most important things for the mental development of a person as well as a nation. Books are the carriers of knowledge. Nobody can deny the significance of knowledge in our personal or national life. Book fairs play a significant role in the spread of knowledge. In a book fair, all sorts of books are gathered and displayed in an attractive way. So, the visitors come to know about the published books and can buy books according to their taste.

My Visit to a Book Fair: Ekushey Boi Mela is by far the biggest book fair in Bangladesh. It is held on the occasion of the 21 st of February, the International Mother Language Day, and lasts throughout the month of February. It is held in the Bangla Academy Arcade. This year I visited the Ekushey Boi Mela on the 21 st of February. The area was highly decorated and well-lighted on the occasion of the book fair. The book stalls were arranged in rows in a planned way. In one corner, a big stage was erected. Everyday discussions and cultural programs were held on the stage throughout the duration of the fair. In front of the stage, there were hundreds of chairs for the audience to sit. It was about 4 PM. When I entered the fair, there were hundreds of stalls displaying and selling books published by the local publishers. There were also some book stalls in one corner which sold foreign books. I was amazed to see the wide variety of books displayed in the book stalls. In some stalls, I found some leading writers and novelists of the country such as Humayun Ahmed, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Imdadul Haque Milan, Shamsur Rahman, Al Mahmud, Syed Shamsul Hoque, Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, and Rafique Azad. They were giving autographs if someone purchased their books. There were many books having colorful pictures and drawings for the young readers. I like science fiction very much. So, I bought some science fiction and books of scientific interest for myself. I also purchased some books on English literature. Moreover, I bought some children’s books for my young nephews and nieces. Then I went to the area where the stage was erected. At that moment a drama on our language movement was being staged there. I enjoyed the drama. I spent about five hours at the book fair.

Importance of a Book Fair: A book fair is important for any country. At a book fair, people come to know about all kinds of books. As the books are displayed nicely, people feel interested to buy books. The newly published books and books of current interest attract the people very much. Everyone can find and buy books on one’s particular interest. So, a huge number of books are sold at a book fair. In this way, a book fair contributes to the circulation of published books and the spread of knowledge. The publishers also feel interested to publish new books on the occasion of a book fair. Hence, a book fair helps the publishing industry too.

Conclusion: Considering the importance and significance of book fairs, it is necessary to hold more book fairs regularly.

Composition on a Book Fair I Visited, 300 Words

By: Haque | For class 7-8 | 05-06-’22

A book fair takes place especially for displaying books on various subjects. It has recently become very popular in our country. Nowadays it is held in every city and town on some occasions, especially on the occasion of 21st February. The largest book fair is held in our country every year on the premises of Bangla Academy on 21st February. It goes on for about a month.

I would not have believed that a book fair could be so fascinating, had I not visited the book fair held at the Bangla Academy Premises last year. It was around 3 o’clock when I reached there. There were about 300 pavilions of different publishers and book-sellers. People both young and old particularly those who are book lovers came to visit the fair and to buy books. All sorts of books such as books on literature, fiction, novels, dramas, science, medicine, engineering, politics, history, general knowledge, philosophy, religion, and so on were brought for display and sale at the fair.

After 4 PM the visitors rushed in and the whole area became overcrowded. Lines in front of certain stalls were so extended that it became out of reach to get the required books.

Selling at the counters was usually brisk. Customers were happy to get the twenty-percent discount. Some publishers brought out famous and rare books on this occasion.

Besides bookstalls, there were a number of canteens. I took refreshment in one of them. The whole atmosphere was joyous. Indeed, it was altogether a different type of fair and I enjoyed every moment of my stay there.

The book fair reminds us that books are our best friends. It creates in us a curiosity of knowledge and an interest in reading. Although a book fair in our country is of recent origin, it is gradually gaining popularity among the people. It promotes the publication of books to spread education and knowledge and helps to develop an enlightened nation.

Essay on Visit to a Book Fair

When I was in elementary school, my parents would take me to the local bookstore every week. Now that I’m an adult and have a job, they don’t do it as often. However, last weekend, I myself went to a local book fair. It was so much fun! The first thing I did when I got there was go stand in line to get our tickets. There were about 150 people in front of us and it took about 20 minutes to get our tickets.   Once we had our tickets, we walked around the fair looking at all of the different books. There were probably about 250 different books on display. Some of them were new releases and some of them were older books that had been re-released. There were also a lot of children’s books displayed there. Some of the authors whom I saw there were Maurice Sendak, Jodi Picoult, and Catherynne M Valente. They each had their own little booth where they were signing copies of their books for people who wanted them. We also saw some other famous authors there, like Nora Roberts and James Patterson. Overall, it was a really fun experience and I’m glad my parents brought me along last weekend.”

kolkata book fair feature image

Reading is one of the best hobbies for young children and students, and it is very helpful to create a bright future. Reading books bring together like-minded people, and we share our thoughts about the book that we read.

Also, everyone has a different choice about reading books – some people like to read historical stories, some like to read stories about science, some people love to read short stories and poetry, etc.

Sometimes, we are not able to find our favorite book or type of book in one book shop, and we have to search for it everywhere. To solve this problem and bring together all authors, publishers, and book-lovers, many ‘Book Fairs’ are organized every year.

In India also, many book fairs are organized every year, but the most famous book fair is the ‘Kolkata Book Fair’. It takes place in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal.

It has a long history of more than 40 years. It mostly coincides with the Hindu festival of ‘Saraswati Pooja’, when the Hindu people pray to the Goddess of knowledge and learning.

The Kolkata Book Fair takes place during the first week of February every year, and it is almost a week-long event. But as it is a very popular book fair, it is also extended for more than 7 years.

The Kolkata Book Fair takes place in winter. It is Asia’s largest book fair, and one of the largest book fairs in the world. It was started in the year 1976 by the Kolkata Publishers and Booksellers Guild, and it is being organized since then.

It is known as ‘Antarjatik Kolkata Boimela’ in Bengali. The Kolkata Book Fair 2020 was the 44th Book Fair, and every year they have a different theme for the fair. This theme is about some country, and then the famous books from that country are kept for the book fair.

The theme for this year was ‘Russia’. So, many books from Russian writers were kept for exhibition in this year’s book fair.

Lakhs of people visit the Kolkata Book Fair every year. The number of visitors is always increasing. Visitors include young children, school and college students, their parents, working people, adults, and old age people too.

The place or the venue of the book fair was changed many times – now it is organized at Central Park Mela Ground. Salt Lake, Kolkata. Every year, some important person in the society is invited for the inauguration of the book fair.

In the last 44 years, many important people have inaugurated and visited the book fair and increased its importance. The book fair of 2020 was inaugurated by Ms. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The book fair has a large number of bookstalls – it has bookstalls of various authors, various publishers, newspapers, magazines, and others. All types of books can be found here.

The timing is of 8 to 9 hours every day, and thousands of people from Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and also from outside of India come and visit the Kolkata Book Fair.

The bookstall of ‘Shantiniketan’ is very famous and loved by all. People come here to look for all the bookstalls, find their favorite books, and buy them.

Various institutes, schools and universities, newspaper teams, museums, research institutes take part in this book fair, and thus it is one of the most important and largest book fairs in India.

Apart from the book fair, many interesting programs like singing, dancing, acts, speeches are organized. The food stalls in the book fair are also very famous. Many writers publish their books in the fair, so they get a lot of readers. People of Kolkata consider this book fair as a very important part of their life.

However, there are some problems. Because a large number of people visit this book fair every year, it is difficult to manage the crowd. The problem of pollution in Kolkata is also increasing, and the place of book fair needs to be changed after some years.

But people don’t want that. Though there are many problems, the Government of West Bengal tries to solve them, and those who love the book fair also keep trying to solve all the problems related to the book fair.

Books and book fairs are an important part of our life. Kolkata Book Fair shows the importance of books, and how much people love it. Book Fairs like the famous Kolkata Book Fair should be organized more, and more and more people should visit such fairs, to know about the valuable treasure of books.

The Concept of Fair

Even though the world of entertainment and recreation has changed to a greater extent, and it kept on changing at a greater speed, “Fair” is still, and will always be close to our hearts. Because it is not just a place of recreation and entertainment, rather it is a traditional event that takes us to the roots of our culture in a fun and loving manner. You may be in any part of the world, but once in a year, you will be hyped about the word ‘fair’. Fair is a place where you can find all sorts of entertainment, food as well as business talk. In a fair, the mass of people gathers together, some for entertainment while some for business talk. Below is a presentation of both long and short-type essays where we will relive the moments of fair.

Essay on Fair in English

Writing an Essay on the fair is just as fun as attending the fair because it takes you on a walk-in memory lane so that you can write about it from your experience. But it is also a good idea to have some guidance while writing the essay in English, and hence Vedantu provides that Guidance to all the students for completely free.

Some information about the Fair

Fair can be considered as one of the oldest recreation activities, at least in India, in which hundreds of people gather at a time. We can trace the beginnings of the fair in 1000 AD. And the reason behind it was to boost the businesses and hence in return, it helps in boosting the overall economic condition of the country. Interestingly, the same thing can still be seen in modern times in events like that of “Book-Fairs” where the writers and readers all come together.

In modern times the fairs have taken a place of an annual break, where everyone from the city can go for recreation, and to be relaxed. Fairs are generally set for a few days or a week. More often than not, the supply of the seller’s stock comes directly from the manufacturer, and hence the things can be brought at the fair at a relatively low price. In this way both the seller and the buyer get benefits.

Things that Happen at Fair

It is important for the students to learn about the things that happen at the fair in order to write an essay on it. The first thing, one may notice in the fair is the rides, there are many rides at the fair, such as Giant wheels that takes the riders to the sky, merry go round horse ride which can be considered as an unofficial trademark of Indian Fair, stalls of Magic Tricks, many toy shops, interestingly the toys that are available in these shops are, for the most part, not available in the shops of the city. Along with these rides the store of many fun activities, such as Balloon shooting can be found in the Fair as well. Also, if you ever had visited the fair, you must refresh your memory for writing the essay on fair.

While writing about the Fair these are the things that you must take into consideration. An important thing is that we eat lots of different things at Fair, and many of them are either packet food or the food that comes in the plastic, and plastic is not good for the environment, hence you must try to avoid it.

Essay on Fair for Students

‘Fair’ this particular word takes us into an imaginary world of a big ground full of different kinds of people and different kinds of joy rides. On those rides, where people sit on them screaming with joy and amusement. We also imagine many different types of stalls which are selling dazzling earrings, fancy clothes, tasty food and even selling toys for the kids. In a coinage, fairs are a representation of these different types of people who come to sell and buy and also have fun at a single place. After all, a fair is a place where there is no boundary set for people or for fun.  Also, in another sense, we can perceive fairness as an exchange of the creativity and productivity of different cultures around the globe.

The culture of fair started somewhere between the early 1000s or 1200s. Fairs actually started as an economic activity different from the redundant business processes and activities of the year. Now the fairs are viewed as an annual break to the year when everyone in the city or town is fed up with their routines throughout the year, fair then serves as a refreshment aided with knowledge, creativity, and business. Fair is set for a multiday, this proves to be a huge benefit for all the buyers and for all the sellers, even products are supplied from the foreign merchants.

Fairs in India

The oldest fair in the history of our country, India is the ‘Kumbh Mela’ which is almost more than 2000 years old. When the planet Jupiter, and the sun, and the moon aligns, those dates are considered appropriate for this Kumbh Mela to take place. Kumbh Mela takes place every after 3 years. The Kumbh Mela in 2013 made a world-record gathering of 10 crore people. If someone is looking for beautiful and rich fabrics, shining earrings, and a variety of other things, then he must go to Pushkar Mela in Rajasthan.

A Village Fair Essay

A village fair is a colorful fair held in a small village, the fair is held during festivals, like Dussehra and Diwali. Village fairs are also held annually during the celebration of a local deity or the religious beliefs of the villagers. A village fair is generally much smaller than a city fair in appearance as well as in the activities performed. An Indian local village fair is marked by relatively small shops that are selling mostly toys and sweet items.

The hawkers who sell small toys on the hand-held wooden frames are seen roaming in the fair. Flutes, whistles, and a variety of lightweight toys are also seen in a village fair, this attracts children a lot. The Hawkers in a fair constantly play their flute or whistle in order to attract the children to buy those items from them.

Descriptive Essay About the Fair

Once in the spring season I went to a fair in my village, the fair was set up in honor of a local deity worshipped here. I wish my uncle and aunt visited the fair. As we entered the fair, I felt a different sense of enjoyment in the air, the fair was lit with a lot of hubbubs. We passed the stalls till we came to my favorite stall wherein large kadhai jalebis were being fried, the smell of the sweet made my taste buds active to savor the same. We had jalebis and kachori in the stall and went further to explore the fair. I played a shooting game where I won a beautiful flower vase. Nearby, was a shop selling big and small earrings, my aunt got a pair, the earrings had mirrors shining on them, which dazzled my sight. Walking a distance I saw a big merry-go-round where children rode the ride merrily. I stood there and watch them enjoy wondering why I grew up for now I could never sit on that merry-go-round. Instead, now I can ride the camel my uncle assured me. I enjoyed the ride on the hunch of the camel.

All was a lovely time spent well in that fair. I will carry this memory to my heart. As I proceeded towards home, I decided to share, my experience in my diary so that I can always relive the moment.

Fair, be it a city fair or a village fair, provides a fun activity to the children, as well as serves as a refreshment for the young and elderly. No doubt the fair is a fun event, but this is also a source of livelihood for the vendors who depend on this event. Many small vendors, also the hawkers depend on these fairs for their businesses. Fairs provide a platform for them to gain customers. They serve as a place for having quality time with family and friends. Parents also ensure that safety precautions are required to be properly taken before sending their children to the rides or to the ferry wheels.

A Book Fair Paragraph

There is a great importance of a book fair in the cultural activities of a nation. Nowadays, book fairs are becoming more and more popular in Bangladesh. These are held in different cities and towns on different occasions of national significance days such as ‘Ekusher Boi Mela’ in the Bangla Academy Campus. Every year a book fair (exhibition) is arranged in the campus. Book fairs are now held in district towns also. In a book fair, some publishers set up stalls. Book lovers such as the teachers, the students, the poets, the writers, the service holders and, some common people crowd there to make their choice and buy books from the stalls. The stalls are beautifully decorated and lighted in order to draw the attention of the customers. Books of different tastes are displayed in the stalls in an attractive way. The distinguished authors personally remain present in the stalls. Consequently, the readers can have a chance to meet their favourite authors. However, a book fair spreads the message that books are our best friends and companions. In fact, a book fair enriches our outlook and makes our life more meaningful.

My Visit to Book Fair

A Book Fair Essay

Introduction: In Bangladesh there are two main book fairs per year: the Dhaka Book Fair sponsored and arranged by the National Book Centre, and the Ekushe Boi Mela arranged by the Bangla Academi. The former was started from January 1, 1996, and the latter had started long before. Both the book fairs are famous and have attracted the attention of book lovers countrywide. The Dhaka Book Fair, by the way, has been internationally known and will most likely be very popular within only a few years.

Don’t Forget to Check: Essay in English

Background: The Dhaka Book Fair is, as has already been mentioned, arranged by the National Book Centre. It starts on the first day of January each year and normally lasts for fifteen days. This book fair, unlike the Ekushe Boi Mela, encourages the involvement of book commpanies or publishers from all over the world. This new feature of this book fair has, undoubtedly, made it more enriched and attracive . While the Ekushe Boi Mela with its long tradition is also very famous for its venue and traditional value.

My visit to the book fair: On January 10, 1996, I visited the Dhaka Book Fair. No sooner had my car reached the parking place that I could easily see the light, hear the humming buzz of people. I was thrilled with pleasure. I bought tickets for me and my friends and got into the fair. What a sight! Oh, unforgettable. It was the night. The stalls and pavillions wore baroquely ornated with light and various types of designs. First, we visited a number of stalls. Each stall was enriched with various types of books. We also visited some foreign book-stalls. The accumulation of their books fascinated us all. I bought seven books from a number of stalls and pavilions. My friends each also bought some books of their own choice.

So many books! So many stalls! So much light and decoration! So many people! That the fair was a success was proved by the number of visitors. Hundreds of people visited the fair all day long from 11 am. to 8:30 p. m. The visit to the fair broadened my experience and added to my pleasure.

The necessity of the book fair: Book fairs like this is very essential for people of such a developing country like Bangladesh. We all know that the literacy rate of our country is around 31 percent, a very small figure. Again, those who are literate seldom read books of their own accord. Such fairs, obviously, increase the number of readers and book-lovers. The nation which does not read books cannot prosper. We need to read more and more and learn accordingly. We all should know more than what we do. We should know what we know as well as what we do not know. Knowledge actually makes us wise enough to be happy in life. And book fairs go a long way in building such consciousness.

Conclusion: Book fairs are an excellent idea of the modern age. We all should bolster the establishment of book fairs more than two times a year. We all should buy books and read them.

The Best Books at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair

By Allison Schaller

During Printed Matter’s NY Art Book fair, books were only the beginning. While those who attended the three-day event perused risograph comics, handmade zines, encyclopedias of botanic wonders, heart-wrenching poetry, collections of ethereal abstract paintings, and a wide range of exciting photography books, this year, artist talks and a block party punctuated the affair.

Held in Chelsea, just around the corner from Printed Matter’s brick-and-mortar store, over 300 publishers from over 31 countries showcased offerings from their catalogs. Below, some of our favorite titles from this year’s New York Art Book Fair.

The Garden , Siân Davey

The portraits in Siân Davey’s The Garden are profoundly vulnerable. In her backyard, Davey photographed guests from over the garden wall to create portraits. The vulnerability captured in this series largely feels projected from the photographer. Davey offers her sanctuary to her subjects, many nude, bare-legged or -chested—a place for them to bloom. The garden itself was maintained by Davey and her son, both welcoming and encouraging the natural space and tenants (bees and butterflies who are also present in the photographs), and allowing the flowers to grow wild and high, building an enclosed space of refuge among the flora. The portraits, despite being quite literally rooted, transcend.

I Have No Idea What I’m Doing Out of Bed , Thomas Lélu

The sentiment seemed to ring true for many at the book fair. I Have No Idea What I’m Doing Out of Bed by Thomas Lélu is a collection of semi cynical truths. I was attracted to it initially from the print displayed next to it, a page from the book with “Sometimes all you need is $500 million dollars” scrawled in blue china marker, to which I thought, “yeah, really.” The small blue book is like a handbook for those moments, each page flip revealing another bluntly presented statement running from a dark “pump up the Valium,” to a silly take like “being famous on Instagram is almost like being rich in Monopoly,” to a more earnest, “I was strong last year, this year I will be happy.” In October 2022, Lélu began a daily practice of writing five sentences, totaling over 500 to date. I Have No Idea What I’m Doing Out of Bed is a curation of some of his finest. ( RVB Books )

Workbooks, Nigel Shafran

The blueprints of Nigel Shafran’s work are reflected in Workbooks . Not just his photographs but his home life, as readers are introduced to his wife and longtime creative partner Ruth, and family. The size of the book mirrors the dimensions of a Moleskine notebook, comfortable and familiar but in bold contrast to the thickness of its pages, which mimic that of an encyclopedia. A rare tangibility is given—in both physical scans of ripped papers, paper clips, notes scribbled on receipts—to the bones of his ideas and thought processes behind Shafran’s artworks. Workbooks will be released on May 6 but is available now for preorder. ( Loose Joints )

I’m Getting Tired of Us , Ian Kline

Ian Kline made a minuscule edition of I’m Getting Tired of Us (11 in total, now completely sold out). Each copy boasts technical feats in printing, staple-bound with a beat-up cover made from rubbings of The New York Times and coffee cup rings. The photographs, not all in color, are in part kaleidoscopic in their otherworldly multicolored nature, if not for their human anchors. By including people and human-made spaces and structures, like two bodies opposite each other in both color and composition in “La Sagrada Familia,” or a man jutting up between two bottles framed villainously in his shadow, Kline offers that the “Us” in the book’s title can be interpreted as mankind.

Digging for Clams , Lucia Bell-Epstein

The cover of Lucia Bell-Epstein’s, Digging for Clams, gives the whole book away. Vibrant pink and green endives, radicchio heads, and green onions crowd together in a brown boxy container, tainted by a hand-torn piece of blue tape sneaking into the photo. In the book, Bell-Epstein documents dinners, kitchens, friends, and family. The photographs, in both style and substance, reflect domestic tension. Idyllic spaces are countered by a kitchen’s organized chaos and grime, something that only a seasoned kitchen worker would be familiar with. It’s this uneasy balance that grounds the photographs with a sense of honesty that a lot of portraiture and food photography craves. ( Pomegranate Press )

Four Modal Modules , Matthew Ronay

Pushing the boundaries of what we imagine a book to be, the four “pop-up mini theaters”—or “tunnel books,” as Ronay refers to them—that make up Modal Modules were presented on a shelf, a few inches above eye level. At the ideal vantage point, “eye to eye,” the books can be viewed directly down the center to view all of their “pages.” Rather than flipping through like one would a traditional book, these can be compressed and extended like an accordion. The books offer layers of paper, some loosely evocative of cellular structure, others echoing bodily motifs: a negative cutout to silhouette an intestine, or an oval alluding to a head. The books evoke themes that feel larger than physical life, while depicting just that in the human biological form. ( Three Star Books )
