A book fair is the book lovers’ paradise. Now I know why it is called because this year I visited the Kolkata Book Fair with my uncle. There I saw lots of stalls. The stalls were nicely decorated. They stood in rows. Lots of books were properly shelved in every stall.

My uncle bought me some story books and a book on painting. I also made a long list of books to buy in future. The stalls were crowded with people of all ages. I was thrilled to see that anybody could touch or read any book. I just rushed from one stall to another because I never saw so many books before. When I was returning home I thought, ‘Had I all the books!’

It was the biennial International Book Fair at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. My friends and I decided to visit the fair since the opportunity comes only once in two years.

We reached the gate of the venue as early as 10 a.m. and bought our tickets. There was a long queue of book lovers before the counter and it amazed me that even in this age of e-books there are people who read books.

After the security check, we headed towards the centre of the action – the different halls. On our way, We could see banners of different sizes, with the big publishers occupying the largest stalls. Apart from the local publishers, national and international publishers too featured in the fair.

We visited some of the stalls and were impressed by the huge collection of books which included story books, novels, books on anatomy, medicine and others.

Later on, we visited the other halls and made sure that we dropped in at the stalls of the international participants. There were food stalls too, to offer refreshments, and we relieved our fatigue by sipping hot coffee.

As hours passed by, the number of visitors also increased and it became difficult for us to move about freely within the stalls which were full of book lovers.

It was 8 p.m. when we started our journey back home. We were almost drenched in sweat though it was a January evening. We were happy to carry the heavy bundles of books that we had bought and wished that such book fairs would be held more frequently so that people would be inspired to read more.

Books are a great source of knowledge. They are our good friends . They provide mental health and entertainment. The knowledge gained by our ancestors, our culture, and our heritage remains with us in the form of books , Book fairs, and libraries help a lot in encouraging the hobby of reading . In our city book fairs are held from time to time. My father always takes me to these book fairs.

Book lovers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and buyers gather in large numbers at the book fairs. Books regarding all subjects are displayed. One can browse the bookstalls and buy books of one’s choice. Seminars, discussions, and interviews of authors are arranged. This helps in the exchange of views.

I happened to visit a big book fair held in our city recently. Publishers and booksellers from all over the country had come to the fair. There were books on various subjects history , geography, science, technology, literature, travel, etc. There were books in all major Indian languages. But Marathi and English books were the major attractions. The booksellers were offering attractive gifts on the purchase of books. My father browsed through many well-known old and new novels. I searched for fiction books. I bought a dictionary and Harry Potter books. My father bought one autobiography and a couple of other books. We bought Panchatantra for my younger sister. The publisher gave us a 20% discount on our purchase.

It was evening now and the fair was overcrowded. Many schoolchildren and elder people visited the fair. My father and I spent almost two to three hours at the fair. We then returned home with much satisfaction.

The smell of new books fills the air and hearing the excited chatter of people exploring the stalls is a truly enjoyable experience. The book fair I visited was located in a large city and it was easy to find. The entrance was situated in a busy shopping district, so there was plenty of foot traffic to help draw in visitors. Once I had found the fair, it was easy to navigate. There were plentiful signs guiding me to the different sections, such as children’s books and classics. The variety of books on offer was astounding. It was hard to choose which book to buy, but that is part of the fun of going to a book fair. After spending some time browsing through the stalls, I made my way over to the library section where I could sit and read for hours. Essay on Visit to a Book Fair

When I was in elementary school, my parents would take me to the local bookstore every week. Now that I’m an adult and have a job, they don’t do it as often. However, last weekend, I myself went to a local book fair. It was so much fun! The first thing I did when I got there was go stand in line to get our tickets. There were about 150 people in front of us and it took about 20 minutes to get our tickets.   Once we had our tickets, we walked around the fair looking at all of the different books. There were probably about 250 different books on display. Some of them were new releases and some of them were older books that had been re-released. There were also a lot of children’s books displayed there. Some of the authors whom I saw there were Maurice Sendak, Jodi Picoult, and Catherynne M Valente. They each had their own little booth where they were signing copies of their books for people who wanted them. We also saw some other famous authors there, like Nora Roberts and James Patterson. Overall, it was a really fun experience and I’m glad my parents brought me along last weekend.”

Regardless of the type of book fair you visit, it is always fun to browse through the different booths and find something new to read. Be sure to take time to chat with the vendors about their books and ask them any questions you may have. The experience of visiting a book fair is unique and unforgettable, and it is worth spending some time exploring every booth before making your selections. Introduction: Books are the most important things for the mental development of a person as well as a nation. Books are the carriers of knowledge. Nobody can deny the significance of knowledge in our personal or national life. Book fairs play a significant role in the spread of knowledge. In a book fair, all sorts of books are gathered and displayed in an attractive way. So, the visitors come to know about the published books and can buy books according to their taste.

My Visit to a Book Fair: Ekushey Boi Mela is by far the biggest book fair in Bangladesh. It is held on the occasion of the 21 st of February, the International Mother Language Day, and lasts throughout the month of February. It is held in the Bangla Academy Arcade. This year I visited the Ekushey Boi Mela on the 21 st of February. The area was highly decorated and well-lighted on the occasion of the book fair. The book stalls were arranged in rows in a planned way. In one corner, a big stage was erected. Everyday discussions and cultural programs were held on the stage throughout the duration of the fair. In front of the stage, there were hundreds of chairs for the audience to sit. It was about 4 PM. When I entered the fair, there were hundreds of stalls displaying and selling books published by the local publishers. There were also some book stalls in one corner which sold foreign books. I was amazed to see the wide variety of books displayed in the book stalls. In some stalls, I found some leading writers and novelists of the country such as Humayun Ahmed, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Imdadul Haque Milan, Shamsur Rahman, Al Mahmud, Syed Shamsul Hoque, Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, and Rafique Azad. They were giving autographs if someone purchased their books. There were many books having colorful pictures and drawings for the young readers. I like science fiction very much. So, I bought some science fiction and books of scientific interest for myself. I also purchased some books on English literature. Moreover, I bought some children’s books for my young nephews and nieces. Then I went to the area where the stage was erected. At that moment a drama on our language movement was being staged there. I enjoyed the drama. I spent about five hours at the book fair.

Importance of a Book Fair: A book fair is important for any country. At a book fair, people come to know about all kinds of books. As the books are displayed nicely, people feel interested to buy books. The newly published books and books of current interest attract the people very much. Everyone can find and buy books on one’s particular interest. So, a huge number of books are sold at a book fair. In this way, a book fair contributes to the circulation of published books and the spread of knowledge. The publishers also feel interested to publish new books on the occasion of a book fair. Hence, a book fair helps the publishing industry too.

Conclusion: Considering the importance and significance of book fairs, it is necessary to hold more book fairs regularly.

Composition on a Book Fair I Visited, 300 Words

By: Haque | For class 7-8 | 05-06-’22

A book fair takes place especially for displaying books on various subjects. It has recently become very popular in our country. Nowadays it is held in every city and town on some occasions, especially on the occasion of 21st February. The largest book fair is held in our country every year on the premises of Bangla Academy on 21st February. It goes on for about a month.

I would not have believed that a book fair could be so fascinating, had I not visited the book fair held at the Bangla Academy Premises last year. It was around 3 o’clock when I reached there. There were about 300 pavilions of different publishers and book-sellers. People both young and old particularly those who are book lovers came to visit the fair and to buy books. All sorts of books such as books on literature, fiction, novels, dramas, science, medicine, engineering, politics, history, general knowledge, philosophy, religion, and so on were brought for display and sale at the fair.

After 4 PM the visitors rushed in and the whole area became overcrowded. Lines in front of certain stalls were so extended that it became out of reach to get the required books.

Selling at the counters was usually brisk. Customers were happy to get the twenty-percent discount. Some publishers brought out famous and rare books on this occasion.

Besides bookstalls, there were a number of canteens. I took refreshment in one of them. The whole atmosphere was joyous. Indeed, it was altogether a different type of fair and I enjoyed every moment of my stay there.

The book fair reminds us that books are our best friends. It creates in us a curiosity of knowledge and an interest in reading. Although a book fair in our country is of recent origin, it is gradually gaining popularity among the people. It promotes the publication of books to spread education and knowledge and helps to develop an enlightened nation.

Scholastic Book Fairs, Explained: How They Work and Who Benefits

an essay on book fair

  • Share article

Scholastic is widely known for its annual book fairs at thousands of schools across the country, which evoke excitement in children, and nostalgic memories for adults.

The children’s book publisher made headlines this week after announcing that it was making certain books about LGBTQ+ characters, civil rights leaders, and Black fictional characters optional for elementary schools hosting book fairs this year.

Update: Scholastic has reversed its decision to allow schools to exclude a collection of books about LGBTQ+ characters and Black characters when hosting its book fairs. Read more.

Dozens of Scholastic book fairs are ongoing in schools across the country this fall. Annually, the publisher provides books to about 120,000 book fairs, according to Scholastic’s website.

Here’s what you need to know about what students can find at book fairs, who organizes them, who selects the books for them, and more.

What can students find at school book fairs?

Book fairs are temporary pop ups with curated collections of books for students to buy. The events are predominantly for elementary and middle school students, and often feature a selection of books by a certain publisher, such as Scholastic, or books chosen by an independent bookstore vendor.

In addition to books, the fairs may also sell school supplies and book accessories. The size of a book fair varies depending on the school hosting it.

Who partners with schools for book fairs?

Scholastic is by far the most well-known book fair vendor, but there are other publishers, companies, and bookstores that also partner with schools to conduct fairs.

The vast majority of Scholastic book fairs serve elementary schools, said Ben Stone, a senior vice president of sales and strategy at the company. However, the publisher also organizes fairs for middle schools, K-6, and K-8 grade ranges. Scholastic does not organize book fairs for high school students.

Who organizes book fairs at schools?

About 70 percent of Scholastic’s book fairs are organized at the school level by a librarian, according to Scholastic. The librarian coordinates with someone at Scholastic to coordinate the selection of books, the delivery of all the necessary items needed to run the fair, and the profit sharing after the fair.

About 30 percent of Scholastic book fairs are organized and operated by parent volunteers from a parent-teacher association, Stone said.

Barbara Johnson, a school librarian from Connecticut and past president of the Connecticut Association of School Librarians, says that when anyone who isn’t a certified librarian runs a book fair, it shouldn’t be left up to them to make sure that the books in the fair are diverse and represent all students.

“Many districts like mine have [PTA] members who are running fairs, who just rely on the book fair vendors to provide them with books that represent students or books that will be attractive or engaging to their students,” Johnson said.

“They’re just relying on a company to do the right thing, and to help guide them and give them books that are appropriate for their patrons.”

Who selects the books featured in a fair and how?

For Scholastic book fairs, schools receive between 250 to 500 unique titles, depending on school size, Stone said. Schools do get some choice between curated collections, but can’t control which unique titles they’ll receive before the fair based on stock availability, he said.

In addition to the regular bookshelves schools receive for the fair curated by Scholastic, the publisher offers about 13 optional add-on collections that book fair hosts can pick from, including collections for Spanish language books, discounted books, and books about religion, Stone said.

Librarians can opt in for those collections, much like the “Share Every Voice, Celebrate Every Voice” collection that features stories about LGBTQ+ people and minorities that Scholastic made optional this year.

“We know what we intend to send each school based on grade range and fair type, but we’re not able to say with certainty or share with the school in advance,” Stone said.

In its fall of 2023 preview, Scholastic includes a disclaimer that while it includes most of the books that will be available, “Some books may not be available and there may be some books—not in this preview—sent as substitutes.”

Librarians don’t know the exact titles that will be included in a fair, said Debby Vandersande, a librarian from Fairfax County in Virginia who has been hosting Scholastic book fairs for more than a decade.

While schools cannot request for specific books to be included ahead of time, if the host school wants a specific title while the fair is ongoing, they can ask for it by filling out a form online as part of a restock request—which is a way for schools to get additional products that were not originally included, Stone said.

What is the benefit of having book fairs at schools?

Book fairs help engage students in recreational reading, which research has shown can improve reading scores, Stone said.

“The fair is all about the joy of discovery, and the power of choice for the students,” he said.

“To find books that excite them about reading, that engage them in reading with the belief that that will aid in their reading of curriculum materials.”

The books in a Scholastic book fair are typically not related directly to the school curriculum, he said.

The fairs are also meant to inspire a love of reading among children, who get a chance to select the books they want to read based on their interests, Stone said.

“There is a lot of research that shows that when a child has the opportunity to pick the books that they read, they’re much more likely to enjoy reading, to read more often, and to continue to be lifelong readers,” he said.

Do schools make money from book fairs?

Schools make some profit from the sale of books at fairs, which can be a financial incentive or a fundraiser for the school.

The fair vendor, such as Scholastic, typically owns the registers at a book fair. At Scholastic fairs, schools can choose between taking 25 percent of the total fair revenue in dollars, or 50 percent of revenue in Scholastic dollars, which is internal currency districts can use to purchase library and curricular materials, stationery, library shelving and furniture, whiteboards, and other educational supplies the publisher offers.

The total fair revenue can vary widely, from about $1,200 in small schools to $100,000 in large ones, Stone said. On average, a Scholastic book fair tends to make $6,000, which makes the average school profit $1,500 or 3,000 Scholastic dollars, Stone said. In total, schools earn about $200 million through book fairs each year, Stone said.

Are book fairs affordable?

Not all schools can afford to host book fairs, and not all students can afford to buy books even if their school has a fair, according to Stone and four librarians Education Week spoke with.

The disparities in access make the system of book fairs unfair, Johnson, the librarian from Connecticut, said.

“I think the system of the book fair in general is kind of missing the boat on how to get books into the hands of kids,” she said.

This year, Scholastic has increased the number of books that are $5 and below by 50 percent, Stone said. For schools with high numbers of economically disadvantaged students, there’s an extended selection schools can request, with every book costing up to $5.

Schools can also use part of the revenue they earn from fairs to build a fund to help children who don’t have money to shop at the fair, Stone said. Finally, Scholastic can help hosts find local fair sponsors so the fair can be free for all students. Last year, the publisher ran about 750 sponsored book fairs.

“We believe that there should be an equitable and accessible experience for absolutely every child regardless of income,” said Anne Sparkman, senior vice president of corporate communications at Scholastic.

We can divide fair into two types, City fair and village fair. Now we will discuss them.

essay on fair

A city fair is usually held at any specific date throughout the year. In India, many old fairs are held for years, around the same period. Trade fairs are for selling unique artifacts, crafts, jewelry, furniture, etc. It is also for commercial activities with a limited presence of fun and entertainment activities. A festive fair, on the other hand, is held during a festival season.

For example, a Durga puja fair in a city is held during the Durga puja festival and Pongal fair in southern India is held during the Pongal festival. During Holi also many fairs occur in different parts of the country.

Another fair which occurs in the city is Book Fair. A group of publishers and dealers organize Book Fair in order to promote books and improving sales. Flutes, whistles, and a variety of lightweight toys are seen in a village fair, which attracts children a lot. Hawkers in fair constantly play the flute or whistle in order to lure the children to buy from them.

Thousands of book-lovers and teachers and students from various institutions all over the state visited the book fair. Special concessions were given to teachers and libraries. Books on almost all subjects under the sun published by a variety of publishers could be seen under one canopy indifferent temporarily set-up shops. May attractive gifts were also being given with bulk purchases. I visited the fair for 3-4 hours every day and made purchases. I could get some rare books in the fair. The fair provided and excellent opportunity to one and all to buy the books of their choice at one goes. Such book fairs should be organized every year in all major cities of the country.

Visiting A Book Fair

A Book Fair was being held in the Pragati Maidan. So, one morning our teacher said that we were going to visit there. We cheered loudly with enjoyment because there would be no lessons for the day.

We lined up outside the classroom. Then we marched in pairs to the school gate where our school bus was waiting, Pragati Maidan was just a few kilometers from our school.

At the Pragati Maidan we were told to behave ourselves. If we wanted to buy any book, we were to take it to our teacher. Then CD we viewed the vast number of books on display there.

It was impossible to look at all of them. So I spent my time browsing mainly among the books op wildlife and nature.

As much as the books were wonderful, the price was discouraging. I could not afford to buy any of them. I would have to ask my mother to buy one for me later on.

Time flew and two hours seemed like two minutes. Soon our teacher told us to assemble at the front door. There she helped those buying books pay at the counter at a special discount. Not many of us bought books as they were too expensive. I did not buy, too. After paying for the books we lined up and went back to school.

A Visit to A Book-Fair

Last month I visited a book-fair. It was held at Pragati Maidan. It was arranged by the National Book Trust of India. I with my friends went to see the fair. There were several book-stalls managed by different publishing houses. It was a matter of delight to watch different stalls. There were local publishers, national publishers and international publishers. The people from different parts of the country had converged there. The stalls displayed children’s books, subject-oriented books, language and literature books, books on science and technology, books on law, finance, management and medical science. The book fair attracted a large number of men, women and children. Every stall was impressive. What attracted us the most was the seating arrangement? I purchased a number of books for my general reading. After having gone around the stalls, we had a cup of coffee. As the clock struck seven, I walked back home. The visit to the fair was very fruitful and enjoyable. I am of the view that more and more book-fairs should be organised for the benefit of reading public.

When we heard of this we were eager to visit the book fair. We discussed this with our teacher to visit this mega event. The teacher readily agreed and took us batch by batch to this event. We hired a big van and went along with our teacher to watch this grand event.

We all started for the book fair at 10 o’clock. It took 30 minutes to reach there. At around eleven, we were at the venue. We were stunned to watch this event. It was really a spectacle to watch. There were attractive hoardings everywhere. Security arrangements were tight. We had to pass through metal detector to reach the different halls. Each hall was segmented into many stalls managed by the respective publishing houses. There were local publishers, national publishers and international publishers. The stalls were attractively decorated. There was a huge crowd of people. Some of the stalls particularly those dealing in stationery and children books were thronged by the people.

Each stall was a delight to watch. They displayed children’s books, subject-oriented books, books on language and literature, books on performing arts, science and technology, books on software and hardware, banking and finance, Management and accounting, books on analog and medicine, books on law and income, books on cookery, health, beauty and fitness and religious books. In addition, there was a huge collection of dictionaries.

Every publisher had their own way to attract the public some were offering heavy discount while some other had gift schemes. Some publishers had made special sitting arrangement for the readers. There were cafeterias and ice-cream parlours. We bought books of our choice. I bought a book on Shakespeare. We came back at 5 o’clock. We enjoyed the visit tremendously. It was a memorable trip.
