The qualitative research question provides the conceptual base and the direction for actual research involvements. But the actual process of ‘doing’ research involves gathering evidence (data) and making sense of collected data bodies. The successful handling of these processes of dealing with data—that are multifaceted and quite challenging processes—requires some prior planning. The planning is a complex theoretical undertaking and is compounded by numerous practical considerations. Moreover, in addition to a priori planning for the project, you need to constantly assess the early plan and modify it to meet the emerging conditions of the inquiry process. This vibrant and challenging process of planning for your qualitative research is called ‘designing’. This chapter is about designing qualitative language education research as the link between the theoretical considerations and the practical side of the research endeavor.

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular though there are several risks. Hence, this study investigates the language used by an international e-commerce platform customer to voice out their dissatisfaction, types of online shopping risks on the international e-commerce platform, and strategies acquired by the platform in addressing scamming issues on their site. A qualitative approach was used to analyse the data gathered from consumers’ feedback and review of the product they purchased on the international e-commerce platform. Data were analysed thematically. The study’s findings revealed that delayed delivery and receiving counterfeit products were the most frequent complaints reported. The shopping risks identified were quality of product and delivery risks. Furthermore, the findings also revealed that the international e-commerce platform used negotiation, mediation, confrontation, and litigation strategies to combat scamming issues on its platform. Online love fraud is a cybercrime. Victims typically lose around 500 billion rupiahs every year in Indonesia. The research related to the experiences of victims of love scammers is limited, and the authorities often ignore victims who report. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Indonesian women as a victim. The study is qualitative with a phenomenological design utilizing purposive sampling. Twelve victims of online love fraud participated in the study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews via video chat. Data processing was carried out by verbatim transcription of the video chats. The resulting texts were then rigorously read and re-read, coded, and grouped according to emerging themes. The victims described the experiences of sending large sums of money and naked photos to the perpetrators. The themes reflect the psychosocial impact of love fraud on women: shock, sadness, anger, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Online love fraud impacts the psychosocial functioning of victims. Victims feel a double burden in losing money and self-respect. These findings highlight the importance of policy, mental health practice, and research. Conclusions suggest psychosocial intervention is vital for the survivor.

The reality of crime in society has been that a new channel emerges upon discovering a particular pathway to commit a crime. The emergence and significance of the internet in contemporary times move side by side with cybercrime, becoming an advanced space for the ease and swift perpetuation of crimes. This has helped the likes of cyber-bullying, cyber stalking and especially, internet fraud to succeed almost seamlessly. The teachings of Islam include respect for each other's personal affairs, respecting the properties of others and not acquiring the properties illegally. Internet fraud remains a digitalized standard of theft, which has a very bad reputation in the principles of Islam. This, unhesitatingly, becomes the attention of the researcher in this paper, assessing the legal and ethical standpoints of Islam against the cynical activities.

Unsolicited emails and online scams can erode both consumer confidence and consumer safety when interacting and transacting over the Internet. This paper uses content analysis to identify the most frequent psychological tricks used in scamming and the most frequent flags which alert consumers to the illegitimate and unsolicited nature of the contact. Findings are then explored in light of individual thinking styles to reveal how some consumers may be more vulnerable to online scams as a result of their own personal preference for thinking in a particular way. The rationale is to establish a foundation for the use of content analysis of unsolicited emails to offer insight into the possible relationship between a consumer’s style of thinking and online victimization.

Cyberstalking leads to a chain of reactions such as identity theft, rape, and even murder. Despite the severe ramifications of cyberstalking, the perception of the adequacy of the law and the legal protection for victims remain ambiguous. This paper aims at examining the perception of the criminalisation of such crime, the gendered nature of such crime and the attendant legal protection for its victims. This paper adopts a qualitative methodology. The preliminary findings revealed that such crime is not considered as a gendered crime and there exists ambivalence on the perception of the crime and the legal protection of victims. The use of modern information technology has contributed to the creation of new media and virtual tools that contribute to mass social interaction. The Internet has enabled networking communicator, associating in virtual communities and the creation of parallel communication space.
