M.Sc Ph.D is a three to six years-long dual degree programme that combines MSc and P.hD. This integrated course rewards a student with a double degree. A M.Sc. is a postgraduate degree in science discipline. Candidates who have completed a B.Sc. are eligible for enrolling in M.Sc. While a PhD is a doctoral level research degree programme. On average, top institutions like IIT-Bombay charges Rs. 50,000 per academic year, IIT- Kanpur charges Rs. Thirty-six thousand per academic year, and IIT- Kharagpur charges Rs. 12,000 per academic year. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology or Chemistry or Pharmacy or Biology or Mathematics or Agriculture or Veterinary Sciences or Physics as applicable to individual disciplines, under the 10+2+3/4 system, can apply to this program.

Candidates with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply for the Mathematical Sciences.

Students with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Biotechnology paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply to the Biological Sciences.

Candidates who have cleared JEST are eligible to apply for an M.Sc Ph.D integrated degree.

Additional Criteria Requirements

The minimum eligibility criteria for admission in M.Sc. Ph.D integrated degree program is an aggregate of 55 percent to 60 percent and above or equivalent grade in the Bachelor’s degree.

The minimum eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates are relaxed to pass class over the first class in the qualifying examination.

Departmental specifications require an eligibility criterion of subjects at the Bachelor's or 10+2 standard levels. To deem eligible for certain institutional departments, candidates must ensure that these requirements are met.

Final year graduates - students appearing for their final year qualifying examination and awaiting the results are also eligible to apply. However, this sect of students should have met the eligibility criteria for the award of the qualifying degree, including all the entrance examinations, dissertation projects, and viva-voce at the time of admission.

An Integrated Masters with a PhD (iPhD) is a four-year postgraduate level programme that combines a one-year Masters course with a three-year PhD course. They allow students to familiarise themselves with their chosen topic, research methods and academic writing techniques before embarking on their own independent research project. An Integrated Masters with a PhD is particularly popular with international students and students who initially lack specialised knowledge or research skills.

Introduction

An Integrated Masters with PhD, also commonly referred to as either just an Integrated Masters degree or an Integrated PhD, offers a relatively new way to undertake postgraduate training. They maintain the depth and focus of a conventional PhD but offer a more comprehensive doctoral training experience.

Due to their growing popularity, both the number of universities offering these newer forms of PhD and the number of students applying to them has steadily increased.

This page describes what Integrated Masters with PhDs are, who they are for, their advantages and disadvantages, how they differ from conventional PhDs and how they are structured in terms of programme, eligibility and costs. This page is for you if you are considering applying for an integrated course, or simply want to know more about them.

What is an Integrated PhD?

An Integrated PhD is a four-year postgraduate programme. They involve undertaking a one-year Masters degree (MRes or MSc) in your first year, followed by a three-year PhD programme in your second to fourth year. Although the courses run back-to-back, a student can only progress to the second year if they show satisfactory performance in their first year. The one-year Masters and the three-year PhD are considered separately in terms of qualifications; therefore, a student who completes an Integrated PhD will receive both a Masters degree (MRes or MSc) and a PhD as opposed to a single postgraduate qualification.

The aim of an Integrated PhD is to provide a structured approach to doctoral studies, combining advanced PhD research with formal teaching in relevant subjects, research methods and communication skills.

As Integrated PhDs are relatively new compared to more regular doctoral pathways such as stand-alone or MPhil-upgraded PhDs, some professors informally refer to them as ‘New Route PhDs’.

Difference Between Integrated PhD and Regular PhD

The most significant difference between an Integrated PhD and a regular PhD is the addition of the one-year Masters degree at the beginning of the programme. This results in an Integrated PhD typically lasting four years, as opposed to the three years as with regular PhDs.

Integrated PhDs are structured in such a way that they provide students with a broader range of foundational skills than a regular PhD. The first year introduces you to a combination of taught elements, practical experience and advanced research skills. In a regular PhD this mode of teaching is missing as it is assumed you already have this level of knowledge.

The last significant difference between the two types of doctoral programmes is the ‘group’ aspect associated with the Integrated version. Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.

Who are Integrated PhDs suitable for?

Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:

Scenario 1: International Students

The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.

It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.

Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree

An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:

  • The applicant is currently an undergraduate student or only holds a Bachelor’s degree,
  • The student has a Masters degree, but in a subject only loosely related to the discipline they wish to pursue at doctoral level,
  • The student has a relevant Masters degree, but the programme lacked a research focus, leaving the student with underdeveloped research skills.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Integrated PhD

The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.

Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.

Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.

Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

The modules will be tailored to your course, but they will include a variation of:

Taught modules:

  • Subject-specific module – You choose one or two modules from a predefined list of topics within your subject area. Your selection should reflect the research area you want your PhD to focus on.
  • English and Communication – Academic language and communication skills will be taught to prepare you for the ‘writing-up’ phase of your doctorate. A common misconception is that this module is similar to the English language requirement tests required to apply to a iPhD. In reality, the module will focus on learning how to critically evaluate research sources, write abstracts, literature reviews and conclusions, communicate in lab-based environments and present to audiences.
  • Research Techniques  – You’ll receive in-depth training to familiarise you with the different research methods and analytical techniques available to modern researchers.
  • Research Proposal Development  – You’ll work with your intended PhD supervisor to prepare a research proposal for your three-year PhD research project.

Research Modules:

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.

Integrated PhD in UK - Lectures and Lab Work

If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.

Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.

If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.

It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.

If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.

The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).

As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. Funding Opportunities

You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils  and research charity organisations such as the  Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .

Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.

As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.

It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

Some integrated PhD programmes do not require students to choose a research subject before beginning their study. A new model of Doctoral training

Integrated PhDs provide a new model of postgraduate training. They retain the depth, rigour and focus of a conventional PhD while also providing a broader training experience.

While the specific training routes may vary, they typically consist of a one-year Master's course (MSc or MRes) which leads straight into a three-year PhD.

This new style of doctoral training is available within our Research Council-funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs).

CDTs and DTPs

Our CDTs and DTPs recruit cohorts of students from a broad spectrum of disciplines, creating vibrant multi-disciplinary communities.

The diversity of students recruited to these centres reflects the breadth of research which they cover.

As well as benefitting from a variety of training opportunities and cohort-building activities, students studying within these centres may also have access to a supervisor and facilities at a partner institution.

The Integrated  MSc and  PhD programme (3+5)

The Integrated MSc and PhD programme makes it possible to integrate the MSc programmes’ optional programme elements and the writing of the PhD dissertation. This allows students and their supervisors more time for the research element of the PhD programme.

The former 4+4 PhD is now a part of the Integrated PhD Scheme (3+5).

Admission requirements

The Integrated PhD programme is open to applicants who:

  • have completed the Bachelors degree with a good result.
  • are enrolled on an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE  or  have been offered admission to an MSc programme offered by SCIENCE
  • can coordinate and integrate the remaining ECTS of their MSc programme with the proposed PhD programme.
  • is qualified to be admitted to the PhD programme
  • have not  started writing the MSc thesis.

The academic content of the MSc programme must be related to the proposed PhD programme.  Read more requirements in the programme description below. 

Organisation of the Integrated MSc/PhD programme

The prescribed period of study for the integrated programme is five full-time equivalents (FTEs) (two for the MSc programme and three for the PhD programme). If, at commencement of the integrated 3+5 scheme, the student has passed one or more programme elements, the period of study is reduced correspondingly.

The 3+5 scheme is divided into two parts:

Part A: The student completes the MSc programme and concurrently completes one third of the PhD programme (one FTE). Part A is completed when the student completes the MSc programme and must be organized in such a way that the MSc programme is completed two years before completion of the entire integrated programme of study.

Part B : The student is a PhD student exclusively and completes the PhD programme in accordance with the approved PhD plan. Part B can be commenced once the student has completed the MSc programme (part A), and the regular assessments have been satisfactory, meaning that the student has lived up to the requirements in the PhD plan.

Any research that impacts the care and well-being of human population come under the domain of clinical research. Clinical research in a broader sense involves epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, translational research, patient-oriented research, behavioral science and, health service research. High quality data and reliable results are key to generate evidence for decision making and to provide impetus for improving patient care. To produce such data, a systematic and multidisciplinary approach is required involving a range of disciplines like basic sciences, biotechnology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, statistics, and public health and behavioral sciences.

Program Contents

The multi-disciplinary curriculum will be covered under the core & elective courses (modules). The core modules include: Basic Epidemiology, Basic Bio-statistics, Clinical Trials-Design and Analysis, Conduct and Operational Issues in Clinical Trials, Bioethics and Regulatory Affairs, Systematic Reviews, Proposal Development and Medical Writing, Data Management, Drug Development, Pharmacovigilance and Project Management. Program Administration and Language

The program utilizes a variety of teaching/learning techniques, which include lectures using Audio-Visual aids, demonstrations, group discussions, and presentation by students. Hands-on practice in computer-based applications and statistical software using computers will be imparted in several courses. The main language of instruction would be English. During internship, the students will get an opportunity to engage in research related activities while working in a community set up, a public health research organization, a NGO, a hospital or a laboratory.

Selection Process

All candidates should submit the application form for the Integrated MSc (Clinical Research) & PhD program in the prescribed format. The candidate can apply online or also download the application form from PHFI Website. The application consists of registration form, proof of academic credentials, work experience, contact details of two referees (academic and/ or professional) and a Statement of Purpose (SOP). The applicants will be short-listed based on their academic qualifications, relevant experience and Statement of Purpose. This will be followed by an interview. The selection of candidates will be conducted by a specially constituted screening committee represented by PHFI and AcSIR.

Program Structure

Masters in Clinical Research

The MSc program in Clinical Research is an intensive 2 year, full time program focusing on the scientific, ethical, and operational issues related to clinical research. Four semesters will be completed in 24 months. First three semesters include class room based, face to face teaching, tutorials and practical. The final semester includes 6 months of project work (with dissertation). The student needs to complete 11 compulsory core courses (modules), 4 elective courses (modules) in 18 months and submit the project report to be awarded the MSc degree. Students are encouraged for taking up internships during summer/winter breaks between semesters, or after completion of the project work, only after due formal permission from their respective supervisors. Adequate institutional support will be provided to students for smooth completion of internship.

PhD Program

The students who complete the Master’s program with a GPA of 8 and above will be eligible for the PhD program. A formal application needs to be submitted which will be screened & enrolment will be finalized by the PhD screening committee. This full 􀆟me and project based PhD program is for a minimum of 3 years. The research topic for PhD will be developed under the guidance of mentors from PHFI and AcSIR. The students are free to choose any topic of their interest ranging from basic sciences to community based studies. The student can be allocated to any of the CSIR Labs participating in the collaborative program on mutual consent.

Cardiovascular health and disease

This MSc will enable you to develop the biomedical research skills you need for a potential career in cardiovascular science, and allied healthcare and bioscience fields, even if you have no previous research experience.

You could use your skills and knowledge from this course to undertake PhD projects such as the following.

PhD project:  Mechanisms of metabolic remodelling in obesogenic/diabetic cardiomyopathy (Supervisors: Prof A Kitmitto, Prof Elizabeth Cartwright)

This project will take a multidisciplinary approach for delineating the pathophysiological pathways underpinning mitochondrial dysfunction in the early stages of disease, to identify potential new therapeutic targets for intervention to prevent disease development.

The MSc provides preparatory training for PhD research by developing your knowledge of the cardiovascular system through specialist taught seminars coupled with tutorials.

This MSc offers a strong grounding in the theoretical understanding and practical experience of key research paradigms, research designs and statistical techniques used in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and neuropsychology.

PhD project:  Optimising the measurement of working memory for assessment of speech-in-noise perception (Supervisors: Dr Antje Heinrich, Dr Samuel Couth, Dr Rebecca Millman)

By taking the MRes, you would receive training in many of the skills that are central to successfully completing this project, such as:

  • an introduction to the theoretical foundations of memory research;
  • a systematic introduction to various experimental designs;
  • training on data analysis.

In addition, completing the MRes dissertation project would give you experience of obtaining ethics approval for experimental testing, and experience in recruiting different participant groups for testing.

Completing the MRes would prepare you to:

  • choose the most appropriate experimental designs based on your research questions;
  • collect and analyse data in an effective and efficient manner;
  • report your results using an academic style of writing.  

Experimental psychology with data science

Master's course:   MRes Experimental Psychology with Data Science

This MSc will prepare you for a successful research career in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience and data science.

PhD project: Infants' early understanding of word meaning (Supervisors: Dr Alissa Ferry, Prof A Theakston)

In the MRes, students will gain the essential statistical analysis skills required to support the PhD project, and have the opportunity to conduct a pilot study to begin training in the methodological aspects of the PhD project.

The MRes offers training in a range of relevant methodologies such as eye-tracking and EEG that can be used in this PhD project.

Medical microbiology

Master's course:   MSc Medical Microbiology

This MSc covers the medical and molecular aspects of bacteriology, virology, mycology, epidemiology and management of infectious diseases.

PhD project 1: Bacteriophage-based approaches for controlling infections associated with haemodialysis catheters (Supervisors: Prof Andrew McBain, Dr G Xia, Dr Anuradha Jayanti)

The MSc course will equip you with a broad and solid knowledge base and research skills in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, which will prepare you well to succeed in this PhD project with a focus on microbial pathogenesis and the development of novel antimicrobial therapies.

PhD project 2: Metals and host-pathogen interactions: the role of metal handling systems in the human gastrointestinal pathogen Campylobacter jejuni (Supervisors: Dr Jennifer Cavet, Dr D Linton)

The focus on clinical and molecular microbiology combined with development of a broad range of laboratory skills provided by the MSc Medical Microbiology is excellent preparation for this project.

During this PhD, the student will further develop their molecular microbiology research skills, studying two significant and related bacterial human pathogens that interact with the human host in fundamentally different ways. One, Campylobacter jejuni, causes an acute gastrointestinal infection, while the related Helicobacter pylori induces a chronic colonisation of the stomach.

We are particularly interested in how these bacteria obtain metals during infection and how they protect themselves from metal intoxication induced by the innate immune response.

Neuroimaging

Master's course:  MSc Neuroimaging for Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience

This MSc explores cutting-edge cognitive neuroscience techniques and their application to research in clinical and cognitive neuroscience. You'll cover the theory behind cognitive, social, behavioural, and clinical neuroscience while gaining practical data analysis and functional neuroanatomy skills.

PhD project: Understanding and optimising motor cortex plasticity (Supervisors: Dr Caroline Lea-Carnall, Dr L Parkes, Prof W El-Deredy)

By the end of the MSc, you will have gained practical experience and a theoretical understanding of data acquisition and analysis techniques required to measure structural and functional features of the brain.

In the PhD, you will use those skills to measure changes in network connectivity in the motor cortex in response to stimulation. Your theoretical knowledge will allow you to interpret the imaging data in terms of the underlying physiology.

Precision medicine

Master's course:   MSc Precision Medicine

This MSc provides training in the principles of precision, translational and stratified medicine, and the impact of individual molecular variability.

PhD project: Predicting response to IL6 inhibition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (Supervisors: Prof A Barton, Dr D Plant, Dr Nisha Nair)

The MSc would be an ideal platform to apply for this PhD project. Students completing the MSc would have already received training on the principles of stratified medicine, as well as training in omics technologies, such as genomics and transcriptomics, which would be applied in the proposed PhD.

The PhD would allow students to apply their learning to address an important clinical question about whether we can use omics to better target the right drugs to the right patients.

About the course

The aim of the taught MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) is to provide a comprehensive education, high-quality research training and the professional skills required for a career in modern immunology.  We expect that our graduates will become part of the global network of immunologists within academic research, biotech and related industry, medicine or healthcare professions.

The MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) course explores immunology in breadth and depth and is intended for science and medical postgraduates. It is a 12-month, full-time course comprising two 11-week taught terms followed by a 14-week research project within a University of Oxford research group. The first taught term focuses on the fundamental science of immunology, while the second explores the applied, clinical and therapeutic aspects of immunology. This MSc course is not modular in structure; all elements are compulsory for all students. Teaching is delivered across a series of linked topic themes to ensure holistic coverage of modern immunology. By the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of how the fundamental principles of immunology integrates with the clinical aspects of immune-driven disease and with other disciplines including cell and molecular biology, genetics and microbiology.

You will be taught by leading academics in immunology throughout the first two terms of the course. You will hear from a wide range of different lecturers, drawn from the University of Oxford Immunology Network, Oxford University Hospitals or external institutions. In the third term you you will undertake a project in a top-ranked research department or institute. MSc projects are provided by internationally-recognised research groups across the Medical Sciences Division. Oxford has one of the highest concentrations of research-active immunologists in the world. Students on this MSc course are therefore uniquely placed to benefit from this wealth of expertise.

Each of the two 11-week taught terms consist of nine weeks of classroom-based teaching, one for revision and one for examination. An average teaching week comprises approximately seven lectures, each lecture being 60 to 90 minutes in duration. In addition, there are small-group discussion and problem-based learning sessions, which may be led by tutors, or by students. Continuing professional development classes, including on presentation and IT skills, statistics, ethics, scientific methodologies, careers and special seminars take place throughout both taught terms. Self-directed study is required alongside structured teaching. In the third term you will undertake an original, supervised research project to gain a working understanding of research techniques in immunology or a related area. Research supervisors provide regular support and guidance during the course of the research project, and students are normally expected to work on their projects during core working hours during the week, or as agreed with their supervisor.

Students are expected to treat their studies as a full-time occupation of at least 40-hours per week.

Supervision

The allocation of graduate supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and it is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff. Under exceptional circumstances a supervisor may be found outside the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.

The Course Director will be your primary supervisor throughout the course. They typically have close contact with the class during the first two terms, and will meet regularly with students to discuss their progress. In the third term day-to-day supervision is devolved to the project supervisor, however the Course Director remains available to meet with students should they wish to.

At the end of each taught term, you will take a computer-based examination to test core knowledge. Further elements of the overall assessment are a critical essay in the first term, a set of clinical case commentaries in the second term, and a research dissertation in the third term, and a final viva voce examination. Detailed assessment instructions and marking criteria will be provided at the beginning of each term.

Graduate destinations

The MSc in Integrated Immunology (Full-time) has run continuously since 2004. Over those years, about half of our alumni from the MSc have gone on to graduate research degrees, with a number of those taking up DPhil positions in Oxford.

Approximately a third of alumni from the MSc have continued to medical school, including Oxford, or progressed to higher specialist medical training. Others have taken up positions in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or corporate sectors as senior scientists, policy advisors, analysts and managers.

Changes to this course and your supervision

The University will seek to deliver this course in accordance with the description set out in this course page. However, there may be situations in which it is desirable or necessary for the University to make changes in course provision, either before or after registration. The safety of students, staff and visitors is paramount and major changes to delivery or services may have to be made in circumstances of a pandemic, epidemic or local health emergency. In addition, in certain circumstances, for example due to visa difficulties or because the health needs of students cannot be met, it may be necessary to make adjustments to course requirements for international study.

Where possible your academic supervisor will not change for the duration of your course. However, it may be necessary to assign a new academic supervisor during the course of study or before registration for reasons which might include illness, sabbatical leave, parental leave or change in employment.

Degree-level qualifications

As a minimum, applicants should hold or be predicted to achieve the following UK qualifications or their equivalent:

  • a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours  in a biological, biomedical or other relevant science, including interdisciplinary subjects.

However, entrance is very competitive and many successful applicants have a first-class degree or the equivalent.

An appropriate medical qualification equivalent to MBBS (MD for overseas students) is also a suitable background for applicants.

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.5 out of 4.0. However, entrance is very competitive and most successful applicants have a GPA of 3.7 or above.

GRE General Test scores

No Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT scores are sought.

Performance at interview

Interviews are normally held as part of the admissions process.

Applicants are shortlisted according to the criteria listed. Interviews are normally held within six weeks of each application deadline. There will normally be a minimum of two academics on the interview panel. If you are located in the UK, this may take place in person or on Microsoft Teams (preferably with video); for applicants outside the UK, the interview will take place by Microsoft Teams.

You will be asked to outline your educational background and interest in the subject, and how this course is relevant to your future plans. You will also be asked to demonstrate your basic immunological and scientific background knowledge. Interviews are approximately half an hour in length.

Your application will be assessed purely on your proven and potential academic excellence and other entry requirements described under that heading.

References  and  supporting documents  submitted as part of your application, and your performance at interview (if interviews are held) will be considered as part of the assessment process. Whether or not you have secured funding will not be taken into consideration when your application is assessed.

This course is taking part in a continuing pilot programme to improve the selection procedure for graduate applications, in order to ensure that all candidates are evaluated fairly.

Admissions panels and assessors

All recommendations to admit a student involve the judgement of at least two members of the academic staff with relevant experience and expertise, and must also be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies or Admissions Committee (or equivalent within the department).

Admissions panels or committees will always include at least one member of academic staff who has undertaken appropriate training.

Other factors governing whether places can be offered

The following factors will also govern whether candidates can be offered places:

  • the ability of the University to provide the appropriate supervision for your studies, as outlined under the 'Supervision' heading in the  About  section of this page;
  • the ability of the University to provide appropriate support for your studies (eg through the provision of facilities, resources, teaching and/or research opportunities); and
  • minimum and maximum limits to the numbers of students who may be admitted to the University's taught and research programmes.

Offer conditions for successful applications

If you receive an offer of a place at Oxford, your offer will outline any conditions that you need to satisfy and any actions you need to take, together with any associated deadlines. These may include academic conditions, such as achieving a specific final grade in your current degree course. Financial Declaration

If you are offered a place, you will be required to complete a  Financial Declaration  in order to meet your financial condition of admission.

Disclosure of criminal convictions

In accordance with the University’s obligations towards students and staff, we will ask you to declare any  relevant, unspent criminal convictions  before you can take up a place at Oxford.

You will be provided with an email account, and will have full access to the online library and other resources of the University of Oxford. You will also have full access to the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, including the Bodleian Health Care Libraries, and access to further reading materials recommended by lecturers will be available either online or in print.

All resources, including lecture presentations and recommended further reading as well as material for problem-based learning sessions and/or small-group discussion classes, are made available through Canvas, the virtual learning environment for which you will receive training at the beginning of the course. During your research projects, you will become a member of the hosting research laboratory and you will be given access to its facilities and resources.

There are social events, arranged ad hoc usually by the students, and often attended by the Course Administrator and Course Director. Formal arrangements usually include a welcome drinks reception and the final dinner with the course team, examiners, mentors and course committee members.

Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) is the academic department of surgery at the University of Oxford. It hosts a multidisciplinary team of senior clinical academic surgeons, senior scientists, junior clinicians and scientists in training.

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences offers research training opportunities for both clinical and non-clinical graduate students. It has a growing number of full-time funded research student opportunities. Research undertaken within the NDS covers many areas including fields such as cancer, immunology, and neurosciences, and specialities such as patient safety, transplantation, urology and vascular surgery.

The graduate research programme within NDS provides a fully integrated training environment. You will be working closely with an academic supervisor who oversees your studies.

NDS also offers two graduate taught courses: the MSc in Integrated Immunology and the MSc in Surgical Science and Practice. The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is offered jointly with the Department for Continuing Education.

Additional information

There are no compulsory elements of this course that entail additional costs beyond fees and living costs. However, as part of your course requirements, you may need to choose a dissertation, a project or a thesis topic. Please note that, depending on your choice of topic and the research required to complete it, you may incur additional expenses, such as travel expenses, research expenses, and field trips. You will need to meet these additional costs, although you may be able to apply for small grants from your department and/or college to help you cover some of these expenses.

Living costs

In addition to your course fees, you will need to ensure that you have adequate funds to support your living costs for the duration of your course.

For the 2024-25 academic year, the range of likely living costs for full-time study is between c. £1,345 and £1,955 for each month spent in Oxford. Full information, including a breakdown of likely living costs in Oxford for items such as food, accommodation and study costs, is available on our living costs page. The current economic climate and high national rate of inflation make it very hard to estimate potential changes to the cost of living over the next few years. When planning your finances for any future years of study in Oxford beyond 2024-25, it is suggested that you allow for potential increases in living expenses of around 5% each year – although this rate may vary depending on the national economic situation. M.Sc. - Ph.D. Dual Degree

The MSc.Ph.D. dual degree in Operations Research is an integrated doctoral programme, for those interested in a research oriented career.  The programme is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, and interested in research in engineering / interdisciplinary areas. The academic programme leading to the MSc.Ph.D. dual degree involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate will be awarded both the MSc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

Semester-wise Credits Distribution for MScPhD

Key Points:

  • Course-work for MScPhD dual degree programme to be completed in first 2 years (4 semesters).
  • Electives : Of the minimum of 6 electives (36 credits) required, at least 1 Institute elective (6 credits) and at least 4 IE labeled department electives(of which one to be an 'Applied elective', and one from ‘Approved list’ as specified by IEOR DPGC) to be taken.
  • Students need to maintain a minimum CPI of 7.0 at the end of Semester 3 and all subsequent semesters to continue for Ph.D.
  • Should inform the department by the end of the Semester 3.
  • In lieu of MScPhD Project 2 in Semester 4, they can instead do at least 12 credits through electives/ R&D project.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme

Integrated Ph.D. Programme is a research programme. At the end of the successful completion, Master of Science and Ph.D. degree are awarded.

The first three semesters will consist of core and elective courses specialized in one subject (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics). The fourth semester will consist of advanced courses and project work. After the successful completion of comprehensive and project work, the student will continue with research leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Eligibility

  • A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences/Chemical Sciences/ Mathematical Sciences/ Physical Sciences/ Engineering/ Technology and related areas as applicable to individual Schools, under the 10+2+3/4 system.
  • Candidates admitted to School of Physics must have a valid score in Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) .
  • The minimum requirement for admission to the programme is 55% marks or 6.0 out of 10 CGPA in the Bachelor's degree (as declared by the University).
  • Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be made according to Government of India rules.

Selection procedure

Short-listed candidates who have applied for School of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics will be called for a written test and those short-listed in the written test will appear for interview(s). In the School of Physics, candidates with a valid JEST scorecard will be called for the interview

Duration of the Programme

The maximum duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme is 14 semesters.

The students will be awarded Institute scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- per month until the successful completion of the coursework and comprehensive examination provided the student maintains a minimum AGPA (annual grade point average) of 6.5.

After clearing the comprehensive examination the studentship will be made equivalent to that of UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF excluding the contingency grant and HRA. The studentship will be paid for a maximum of 14 semesters (including 4 semesters of course work) for each student provided (s)he is in good academic standing.

Fellowship stands automatically terminated at the end of 14 semesters for which the student registered. Fees

About the Program

Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences (CBCS) has a vibrant, International level research environment highly conducive for graduate studies. The goal of the Integrated program in Cognitive Science would be to enable students to develop their knowledge base in Cognitive Science and learn the skills to pursue basic and applied research in the field of Cognitive Science. The program will focus on current knowledge status of behavioural and cognitive processes and exploring new inter-disciplinary interfaces (with computer science, neuroscience, physiology, philosophy, economics and language sciences) with the aim of understanding cognition and behaviour in its research endeavours.

Learning outcomes

  • Core knowledge about the interdisciplinary approach in cognitive science
  • Training in research skills and methodologies of interest including eye tracking, EEG/ERP, functional neuroimaging and behavioural experimentation.
  • Integrating theory and methods in cognitive science
  • The program will enable students to develop the skills for becoming an Independent researcher in the field of cognitive science and also to think about the applications of cognitive science related to clinical/consumer neuroscience or industry.

The program has multilevel entry/exit options as below –

Note:  Students admitted in 1 st year have exist options after completion of 1 st year (Certificate), 2 nd year (Degree), and 5 th year (PhD).

Master’s Track (Semester I – Semester IV)

If a student opts to terminate with a MSc degree : They will have to do a compulsory Master’s thesis starting in the third semester.

If a student opts to continue with the Integrated MSc-PhD Program: They will be required to start with their PhD thesis work (research proposal) in the third and fourth Semester (2nd year of the integrated program).

  • The decision to continue with PhD has to be made at the end of the First Year.
  • Doctoral Advisory Committee may advise the students continuing in the PhD program to take certain specific electives in the third and fourth semester depending on the area of research.

Educational Visit

One educational visit (1 credit) for students in the intergrated MSc-PhD program will be organized to provide exposure/experience of working in specialized labs for cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence/clinical settings/industry in institutions such as IIIT Allahabad, BHU, National Brain research Centre, Manesar, NIMHANS, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and/or others.

* Criteria for transitioning from MSc to PhD :

  • Overall CGPA of at least 7/10 in MSc Degree.
  • Only top 6 students willing to continue with the PhD programme will be considered.
  • Students’ performance in M.Sc. thesis.
  • Availability in the preferred lab
  • A comprehensive viva to determine students’ technical and theoretical knowledge with respect to specific requirements of corresponding labs/methodologies/areas of research.
  • The probationary/mutual evaluation in the Third semester of the MSc degree before commitment to continue with the programme and the decision will be finalized by the DPC, CBCS.

Evaluation System (MSc level)

The students would undertake mid-term and final semester examinations during each semester. Grading would be based on a 10-point letter grade system as currently followed in the University. The continuous assessment would consist of a mid-term exam and term paper/assignments/ presentations and the end-semester exam. As far as possible, students will be given feedback. The board of examiners would review the evaluation of the marks/assigned by the individual course instructors. The master’s thesis is evaluated by an internal and external examiner including an open viva voice examination (thesis defense) at the end of fourth semester.

PhD Track (Semester V – Semester X)

The doctoral degree from Semester V to X in the MSc-PhD Integrated program will be governed by the University rules and procedures for doctoral degree. The duration of the PhD will work the same way as it does for other PhD programs as per UGC norms.

Doctoral Advisory Committee

A Doctoral Advisory Committee will be constituted for each research scholar to look after the planning and administration of the program. The Committee will consist of the supervisor and two other faculty members working in related areas/methodology. The supervisor would act as the convenor of the Committee. The Committee will advise the student at all stages of research and evaluate the progress. It will also make recommendations regarding the extension or termination of the scholar from the program.

Pre-PhD Course Work

The Doctoral Advisory Committee may recommend remedial courses in Cognitive Science or related disciplines as needed. All students enrolled in a course will be evaluated by the course instructor. Evaluation is based on Course Assignments, participation in class discussions and performance in oral or written examination conducted by the course instructor.

Comprehensive Exam

Prior to submitting the research proposal, the candidate has to pass a comprehensive exam conducted by CBCS.

PhD thesis proposal

Students enrolled in the Integrated program will be required to submit a detailed research proposal for the PhD thesis including a review of relevant literature at the end of the second year if the student opts to continue with the PhD.

*There is option for earning the credit for this course from MOOCs (Swayam or NPTEL) **Courses with lab sessions Students will be provided with the list of Skill enhancement courses offered by the University and each student may opt for one of the 8 such courses in the first and second semester.

Elective Subjects

Foundation courses and skill development courses :

  • Scientific communication (writing and presentation skills)
  • Languages: English/French/Mandarin and one of the Indian languages

Additional skill set: We propose to offer the following (short-term) courses: Art and brain, Computer applications, Programming, Mindfulness/Yoga training.

As resolved by the Advisory Committee of the Centre, the duration of PhD in the integrated program need not be restricted and may work the same way as it does for other PhD programs as per UGC norms given that 5 years is a very constrained period for MSc and PhD since there are no undergraduate programs in Cognitive Science and a 2-year course work is needed during Masters. The students who continue with the PhD in the integrated program will be entitled for the University fellowship given to PhD students of the University, given that the students in the Integrated program are admitted through a National entrance exam (COGJET) or GATE.

Placement Opportunities

Students after the Integrated PhD in Cognitive Science could be placed primarily in academic institutions as faculty or research scientists or as research engineers in the R&D divisions within the industry .

Faculty positions at IITs, ISSERs, IIMs, Central Universities like University of Hyderabad, Private Universities like Flame University, Ashoka University, Christ University and others have been employing Cognitive Science graduates.

INTEGRATED Ph.D. PROGRAMME

Eligibility :

Selection procedure :

Shortlisting for interviews for selection to the Int. Ph.D. Physical Science programme will be based on academic records, performance in the national level exams, statement of purpose mentioned in the application form.

Shortlisting for interviews for Int. Ph.D. Chemical Science programme will be done based on the performance in Joint Admission test for Master’s (JAM) 2024 or a written examination conducted by JNCASR.

The applications for the Int. Ph.D. Biological Science programme will be screened based on overall academic performance for eligibility to attend an entrance exam. Successful candidates will be invited to appear for interviews shortly afterwards.

The final selection to the Int. Ph.D. Degree Programme will be based on the performance in the interview.

Note: Interviews will be held in-person only .

Scholarships/Fellowships: Integrated Ph.D. students are paid fellowship of Rs.19000/- for first two years, Rs.37,000/- during third and fourth year and Rs.42,000/- during fifth, sixth and seventh year.

Medical / Insurance facility: Students are automatically enrolled in a Group Insurance Scheme and a Comprehensive Medical Scheme and have access to an on-campus doctor, as well as to medical facilities elsewhere.

Travel grants:  While pursuing Ph.D. from third year onwards, one time  students travel grant upto Rs.1,00,000/- is provided to attend international/national conferences.

Our students have attended conferences in countries such as Korea, Iran, France, Singapore, the United States of America, Japan, Sweden, Italy, Israel, etc.

Tuition Fee, etc :  Current norms for payment of tuition fees is Rs.5,000/- per annum for first two years and Rs.10,000/- per annum for the next five years. In addition, Rs 200 as medical charges and group insurance fee of Rs. 25 will be charged every month.

MSc Integrated courses : The education system in India has seen a lot of transformation over the decades. The introduction of integrated programmes in higher education is one of them. The integrated course is a degree programme that merges two degrees and a single degree is awarded as a whole after the completion of course. Presently, there are various Colleges/ Institutes/ Universities in India that offer integrated courses.

MSc Integrated course is a four or five years course that a student can pursue after the completion of Class 12th. MSc Integrated course is equivalent to (BSc + MSc) course. Degree awarded after the completion of MSc Course .The integrated course is a postgraduate degree.

MSc course is a befitting career choice for students who want to pursue an industrially oriented course soon after the completion of Class XII studies. The course is designed keeping in mind the curriculum of both BSc and MSc courses. It focuses more on career growth and helps students excel in specialised courses in less time. The integrated MSc course gives you an option to pursue a degree equivalent to postgraduate soon after the completion of Class XII.

Regular MSc course requires you to complete a BSc course before you enroll for the MSc degree programme. To get admission to one of the best MSc colleges after BSc demands a good score in the relevant entrance examination. However, the Integrated MSc course gives you an option to complete an MSc equivalent course without taking a gap between an undergraduate and postgraduate course. You need not plan for BSc and MSc courses separately.

Syllabus of both BSc and MSc course is covered in a single integrated program.

In case you wish to opt out of the integrated MSc degree program after 3 years, you will be awarded a BSc degree.

Candidates must have passed Class XII from a recognised board.

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English must be subjects studied in Class XII.

Candidates must have scored at least 60% average (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English) in Class XII and X.

Candidates must also meet the age criteria defined by a specific institute.

Top universities and colleges accept admission in MSc integrated courses on the basis of entrance examinations like NEST, AU CET, YVU CET, CUET, and CIPET Joint Entrance Examination.

Some universities accept admission for M.Sc integrated course admission on a merit- basis i.e marks obtained in Class XII. The candidate must meet the minimum eligibility criteria as defined by the institute to be considered for admission.

Such Universities or Institutes usually release the application form. Candidates must fill in the application online/ offline and also submit relevant documents to be considered for admission.

Fees structure for MSc integrated course varies institute-wise. The average fees for MSc Integrated courses can range between INR 60,000 to 85, 000 per year in private colleges. Government Institute's annual fees are from INR 20,000 to 25, 000.

JNU Admission 2024 - Jawaharlal Nehru University has started the JNU PG 2024 admission process on April 29, on the official website. Candidates can apply for JNU 2024 admission process till May 27. Jawaharlal Nehru University will offer admissions for UG programmes through CUET examination .

Similarly, JNU offers admissions for PG programmes through CUET PG exam . Jawaharlal Nehru University will publish the JNU merit list 2024 based on the candidates who qualified in the entrance examination. Candidates seeking JNU admission in UG and PG programmes must fill out and submit the JNU admission form 2024 at the official website of the university - jnu.ac.in: before the deadline. Candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria of their desired programme before filling the JNU application form and enter all the details correctly.

JNU 2024 Application form - Important Points

The JNU PG application form has released on April 29.

The application form for JNU 2024 will be made available through online mode.

The JNU UG application form 2024 will be released in June 2024.

Firstly, candidates’ registration is required for which they have to provide the basic details like name, father’s name, email, DOB, and others.

The authority will also provide a correction facility to the candidates after the completion of registration process.

After providing all the information and uploading the documents, candidates have to pay the required application fee.

Candidates must take the printout of the application form for future reference.

For the academic session 2024-25, Jawaharlal Nehru University will accept the CUET-UG scores for admission to BA (Hons.) in foreign languages, school of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. B. Sc - M. Exam Mode: The CUET PG exam 2024 will be organised via online (computer based) mode.

No. of Questions : Each question paper consists of 100 questions.

Marking Scheme: For each correct answer, 4 marks will be awarded.

Jawaharlal Nehru University will publish the JNU PG 2024 merit list in July via online mode. Candidates can visit the official website to check the merit list of JNU PG 2024. Similarly, the JNU UG 2024 merit list will be published in August on the official website. The JNU merit list includes the name of the candidates who have qualified for the admissions. On the basis of the positions of students in the JNU 2024 merit list and the reservation criteria, candidates are invited for the document verification round of the JNU 2024 counselling process.

The qualifying candidates need to attend the JNU counselling which includes verification of their official documents, remitting the semester fee, and fixing their seat in the first semester. It must be noted that there is a certain official document that must be carried by the candidates for them to get verified by the authorities. Failure in presenting any one of the official documents will lead to the candidate’s disqualification. In both the business and personal worlds, cyber criminals have the ability to cause considerable harm from remote locations, with numerous industry reports* estimating that the global cost of cybercrime has grown to rival that of the illegal drugs trade. From financial theft to child abuse, cybercrime can take many forms, and the need for skilled professionals capable of tackling these problems will only grow as smart, connected devices increasingly become the norm.

This master's degree is designed to provide you with an understanding of the criminological, legal and research context of cybercrime. Furthermore, it aims to equip you with an understanding of computing skills and capabilities that will help to respond to online threats to personal information as well as to organisational environments.

What will you study on the MSc Cybercrime and Digital Investigation?

Four core plus one optional module are completed over terms one and two, with a Dissertation period in term three.

Each module is typically worth 20-30 credits except the Dissertation and Work Integrated Learning, which are worth 60 credits. Work Integrated Learning may be chosen to replace the Dissertation with prior agreement.

Advanced Research Strategies (15 credits)

The aim of this module is fourfold:

  • To equip students with a clear understanding on the philosophy and sources of bias in social research
  • To provide students with the ability to carry out quantitative data analysis through both descriptive and inferential statistics (chi-squared test, t-test and correlation coefficients)
  • To equip students with strong qualitative analytical methods skillset to critically analyse qualitative data from a decolonial standpoint
  • To critically evaluate and convey the strengths and weaknesses of research projects and policy reports through short oral presentations.

By the completion of this module, students will be able to understand the benefits of the different qualitative and quantitative research techniques and will be equipped in applying different quantitative and qualitative analytical approaches. They will further be able to identify and critically evaluate research projects and policy projects which will benefit them towards their dissertation and future employment.

Drugs and Crime (15 credits)

This module aims to develop advanced skills in the application of theoretical concepts and frameworks in relation to drugs, drug use and drugs control and in critically analysing the relationship between drugs and crime.  Students will critically evaluate initiatives within the criminal justice system to address the drugs ‘problem’.  The module also aims to foster a critical interest in the reform of drugs policy and institutions at both national and international levels.

Political Violence and Terrorism (15 credits)

Cybercultures and crime (15 credits).

This module aims to develop students’ understanding of diverse online cultures and how these enable different types of crime (online and offline); how cybercultures and cybercrime are regulated, policed, and prevented; types of cybercrime and how behaviours are learned; how the online world can enable group identification and deviant behaviour.

This module will help students understand the changing world of cybercrime and what can be done to curb incidents of harm online. This includes equipping students with the knowledge to intervene effectively in online radicalisation movements, building anti-cybercrime and deviant cyberculture-based policy and solutions, and understanding how broader social movements use the online world to further their aims.

Dissertation (60 credits)

This module aims to synthesise learning from the criminology programmes of study, providing an opportunity for students to study independently and investigate a topic in depth. It fosters academic curiosity; an inquiry-based approach and the employment and application of research skills thus facilitating the development of a higher level of theorising.

Students will define their own topic area, conduct a comprehensive review of existing knowledge on the subject, formulate a methodology for conducting their own enquiries and write an in-depth report of the findings of their research. Alternatively, students may choose to conduct a theoretically oriented piece of work involving the systematic analysis of an issue or area of policy/practice.

Work Based Experience (60 credits)

This module aims at engaging students to explore contemporary critical issues in criminology with a particular focus on global perspectives with policy relevance. By studying criminology from a critical perspective with a global focus, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of intersecting issues in Criminology related to harm and crime and develop the ability to apply complex perspectives to real-world issues.

The aim of the module is to be in conversation with the compulsory module Contemporary Theory in Criminology to allow students to develop the ability to apply the theories studied to real-world global issues in this module. It also provides a broad overview of the contemporary field of criminology which serves as a foundation for term two optional modules.

There is a strong focus on the development of the digital investigation skills necessary to understand and respond to emerging forms of cybercrime.

Criminology conferences

Our Department of Criminology and Sociology is part of the Common Studies Session in Critical Criminology (CSSCC) which involves postgraduate Criminology Departments across different EU universities including Jay College of New York. The conferences are held twice a year across Europe.

You will be encouraged to participate and deliver your own paper at the conference and have an opportunity to present your ideas in an international academic student environment. A certificate of attendance is awarded to those who participate in the CSSCC.

Definitions of terms

Live in-person on campus learning – This will focus on active and experiential sessions that are both:

  • Led by your tutors including seminars, lab sessions and demonstrations We'll schedule all of this for you
  • Student-led by you and other students, like small group work and presentations.

Tutor set learning activities – This covers activities which will be set for you by your tutor, but which you will undertake in your own time. Examples of this include watching online materials, participating in an online discussion forum, completing a virtual laboratory or reading specific texts. You may be doing this by yourself of with your course mates depending on your course and assignments. Outside of these hours, you’ll also be expected to do further independent study where you’ll be expected to learn, prepare, revise and reflect in your own time.

Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed by a variety of assessment methods including essays, reports, oral presentations (online or face to face), producing .csv datasets, reviews, a research proposal and a research project or placement in a cybercrime-related area. A range of coursework submissions allows you to demonstrate your understanding of theory and practice, as well as your ability to sustain a coherent argument.

How can the MSc Cybercrime and Digital Investigation support your career?

This master's degree aims to develop social science graduates who have the skills needed to respond to cybercrime and e-security challenges, from issues relating to transnational crime, intellectual property, sexual offences, vulnerable victims, privacy legislation and law.

Potential career paths include policy development, corporate security, e-investigation, social media safety, anti-money laundering (investigatory and other roles in the Financial Conduct Authority, Financial Services Ombudsman etc.), safeguarding, designing and implementing data security and information strategies, business continuity and others.

Several major auditing firms also have graduate entry programmes that specifically identify criminology as a base qualification for applicants.

Those already in industry view their master's-level studies as a means to facilitating career progression within their organisations. A number of students have continued their studies in criminology and psychology at PhD level. Qualifications

We normally require a second-class honours degree 2:2 or above or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate three years' relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.

Entry onto this course does not require an interview.

We accept the equivalent of the below qualifications from a recognised overseas qualification:

International students who require a Student route (formerly tier 4) visa to progress on a course at Middlesex University must apply for study on a full-time basis. However, this course is offered part-time so you are eligible to apply on a part-time basis.

Part-time study

International applicants can apply for Student route (formerly tier 4) visas for part-time postgraduate study (courses leading to a qualification at RQF level 7 or SCQF level 11 and above).

Student route visa students studying part-time are subject to certain restrictions:

  • no work placements as part of the programme

You must have competence in English language to study with us. The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components). My research focuses on using high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) for human brain mapping in naturalistic settings. Before joining the PhD program, I lived in Finland, where I finished my MSc in neuroscience. Challenges I experienced during my transition into the field of engineering motivated me to develop a math crash course, which introduces students to math concepts that will be encountered during core classes. I’m Braden, currently a 3rd year PhD student in Imaging Science. I work in the Medical Imaging and Data Science (MINDS) lab with Dr. Aris Sotiras. My project focuses on adapting and developing machine learning techniques to predict longitudinal risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease from neuroimaging data. I am also interested in data harmonization topics to address inter-scanner and inter-site variability in PET biomarkers. During my undergraduate studies, my all time favorite class that I took was intro to linear algebra. This eventually led to an interest in medical imaging and machine learning, where I had multiple opportunities to get involved in research related to these fields in my undergrad and postbacc experiences. Looking back at it, intro to linear algebra was also the most useful course that I had ever taken, since I am continuing to apply that knowledge to this day in my current research. I hope to share my excitement about math and to show its importance in imaging research through the Math Crash Course!

  27. Meet the Team!

    Before joining the PhD program, I lived in Finland, where I finished my MSc in neuroscience. Challenges I experienced during my transition into the field of engineering motivated me to develop a math crash course, which introduces students to math concepts that will be encountered during core classes.
