Travel & Tourism Bachelor Master Thesis Topics

When I did my master’s degree in economics, I strongly considered writing about something related to travel and tourism. That part of the world has always interested me. I’ve always been a traveler – and will hopefully always be one. In the process of finding out what to write for my own thesis, I spent probably 100 hours investigating different bachelor/master topics that in some way can be related to the travel industry. Personally, I went on writing about how Scandinavian companies could benefit from taking their manufacturing process home from SouthEast Asia. But that left me with a lot of travel/tourism-related topics that I want to share with you – for free. Let’s start.

Topic 1: Social media

Social media is now a larger part of the marketing budget for almost every travel company. This is one of the topics that I was researching the most, and therefore I got loads of specific suggestions:

Analyze how different airlines use different strategies to get in touch with and interact with potential customers on Facebook.

Pictures above : Instagram pages of KLM and American Airlines. They have a very different strategy on Instagram in regards to the pictures they upload. Why do they have that? Who succeeds the most? I would love to contact a big hotel chain and ask how they try to reach their audience through social media.
How do airlines and hotels work with “user-generated content”? Many backpacker hostels give away free breakfast if someone post a picture of themselves on Instagram “tagging” the official hotel account.

There are (loads of) people out there that have a huge follower base on Instagram/Facebook. Many of them are paid by hotels and airlines to promote their products and services.

Is that a good or a bad thing?

Does it make us travel somewhere just to get disappointed?

I mean…it’s quite a big difference between social media and real life sometimes.

You could investigate topics like:

Can we trust “travel influencer marketing” anymore? Or is it all paid for and fake?
What do these travel influencers get paid every time? How big of a business model is it for “influencers”?
Is this type of influencer marketing more or less efficient compared to the more traditional tourism marketing?

Research tips: A great way to do research for this type of thesis would be to get in touch with both a travel influencer AND a hotel that uses this type of marketing to reach new customers. Try to find some good research questions that can discover problems or difficulties in having influencers as a part of your marketing strategy.

Ask a group of people where they got inspired when they researched their last holiday. Compare a group of 50 year-olds to a group of 18-year-olds. Are there any differences in how they do “travel research”?
Contact a company that produces and sells physical travel magazines. Are sales declining due to the massive amount of free information online?
Despite the hype, AirBNB has not totally taken over the accommodation market. According to BusinessInsider , loads of travelers do still prefer to live in hotels. Why? Do most people know about the advantages of using AirBNB?

Instead of giving in-depth thoughts about these sub-topics, I’ll go straight to some research questions that I considered using:

What happened to the economies of tourist agencies during the Covid-19 pandemic?
How much of Thailands’ economy is based on tourism? What happens when tourists disappear?
How much money goes out of Norway every summer due to the fact that 1 million people travel abroad? Does tourism overall have a negative impact on Norway’s’ economy?
Which nationalities spend the most money when they’re traveling? According to Statista.com , Chinese tourists spend a staggering ~250 billion (with a B) dollars abroad every year. 🙂

Hot tips: In order to do proper research, I would contact someone to make some interviews when you researched this. These are some examples of people to contact:

A group of Chinese people to ask why they spend so much on luxury clothing when they’re abroad
A hotel in Thailand to ask how they survived the Covid-19 crisis
Some business owner that went bankrupt due to the lack of tourists in 2020

Politics: How can people in power determine where tourists go?

Ooooh, this is a topic that I know quite a lot about.

As a previous expat in China, I met a lot of people that had traveled to North Korea to “experience something crazy”.

My first reaction was:

“How can you allow yourself to put money into that country? Do you find that to be OK?”

Surprisingly, a lot of people had no problem supporting North Korea. That’s why this is an extremely interesting topic to discover more.

I’ll just continue on my previously mentioned example. Contact a group of people that have been to North Korea. Why did they go? Did they have any problems supporting a regime that spends money on nuclear weapons instead of food for their inhabitants?
What happens to tourism in a country when they experience a radical and negative shift in power? For instance, you could look at how the 2009 terrorist attacks in Cairo or the Egyptian revolution had an impact on tourism in Northern Africa around 2008-2012.
Certain countries have super strict visa policies. Gather a group of people and ask them if they refuse to visit certain countries because of expensive visas – or long visa processes with a lot of paperwork. That would be super interesting to find out. 🙂

Even though it might be a small topic to write about, I have yet to see someone writing a good bachelor or master thesis about digital nomads .

Most people are not familiar with the concept so I’ll explain it very quick.

Certain people ( like me …) have an online income. That means we are not dependent on a physical destination to do our work. All we need is access to the Internet.

As you might already have figured out; that gives a lot of freedom. And a lot of young people use online income as an excuse to travel to low-cost countries and live their life.

Even though this might seem like a niche topic, there are many things you could use as your research question:

Why do people decide to become digital nomads? High living cost back home? Are they going on an adventure? Do they want to meet people that work with similar online projects as themselves?
How does the future look for digital nomads? Many shared co-working spaces pop up. In the future, do companies in Stockholm allow their employees to work from a beach in Bali?
Which destinations seem to be the most popular? And why? What do these places have in common?

Tips : If you find a good research question, I would strongly recommend you to interview several digital nomads. That could easily be done by finding them on groups on Facebook. Or, even better, fly down to a typical “digital nomad destination” and meet them face-to-face. 🙂

For many of us, the world “travel” is connected with somewhere exotic.

A place where people speak another language that we cannot understand. Long, white beaches and crystal clear water. Affordable drinks in different colors.

But a lot of people also prefer to travel domestically. This might sound like a boring topic to choose, but there are loads of variations that might make it interesting:

Do people prefer to buy a cabin or spend that money on luxurious travels abroad?
How many people travel by car when they travel domestically. And why?
Are people from larger countries (The US/Russia) more likely to travel domestically compared to people from smaller countries (Denmark/Austria)?

Examine how the rise of the sharing economy has impacted the tourism industry.

Possible perspectives:

How has the sharing economy impacted the traditional hotel and transportation industries?
What are the benefits and drawbacks of the sharing economy for tourists?
How do sharing economy platforms impact local communities and neighborhoods?
What are the regulatory challenges facing the sharing economy in tourism?
How can traditional tourism companies adapt to the sharing economy?

Hi Yin! Yes, absolutely. I would actually try to conduct some proper research on the whole industry myself.

1) Conduct interviews with the eage feeding boat tour operators. Why do they offer these services? Do they think it’s the best way to portratit Malaysia? 2) If possible: find some people who have actually been on these eagle feeding trips. Do they think it is of value to Malaysia? Or are they just interested in birds?

Those are the research methods I would use. However, coming up with a research question on such a specific topic might be difficult as I don’t know anything about the boat trips myself.

We are a couple of Danish guys who might think that the digital nomad thesis topic sounds like something we would love to explore in the new year. So we will pack our bags and leave for a “digital nomad city”.

As you seem to know a thing or two about the community: do you have one place in mind where you think we should go? Just a destination where you think it’s easy to get people to talk to you.

The aim of the paper is to deeply understand the different strategic choices a destination management organization (DMO) can make with a managerial approach in order to ensure the development of the destination by systematizing local resources according to a long run vision. Once the “sustainable tourism” is identified, it is necessary to understand which are the main strategic initiatives a DMO can put in place taking into account the stakeholders directly or indirectly involved in tourism activities, according to a responsible tourism approach. In order to identify common procedures and successful policies, the paper uses a comparative case study analysis in order to describe several existent best practices with some possible generalizations. The services forming the tourist product/products offered/given at a destination, and which must be differentiated from those offered by competitors, are the ones “forming” the brand.

Sustainability, as defined by the Brundtland Commission, which mentions the needs of present and future generations, is a concept that transcends concern with the environment, though this consideration remains important. Sustainability also relates to culture, way of living and economy. Applied to tourist destinations, sustainability offers guidance of great clarity. Tourism brings significant impacts, physical, economic and cultural, with important positive and negative aspects. A study of the subject reveals that the guidelines for sustainable tourism are exactly the guidelines for economic develop- ment and healthy living - non sustainable tourist destinations actually tend to decline and even perish. A qualitative research was conducted in a tourist destination in Brazil, typi- cal in several respects. Such destination has developed after the publication of the Brund- tland report - did not inherit certain prejudicial attitudes. The results show that the major players involved are not aware of all the challenges posed to a sustainable development, but this can be changed for the better with relative ease and highly positive consequences.

Destination, or the terminus of tourists' holidays, is a complex element linking geography (with all the resources–anthropic and natural–made available to tourists) and tourism (with all the activities that they can carry out and services that they can consume during their stay). The complexity of the destination is that it represents a product and more products at the same time. Services forming the tourist product/products offered in a destination, and that must be differentiated from those offered by competitors, are brand “formative”.

This paper aims to develop a preliminary conceptual model for the tourism sector; using sustainable development principles and models. An account of the Malaysian sectoral industry in tourism using the Sustainable Model will be examined and by using these details to understand the strategic opportunity that would help draw an eco-tourism framework from a strategic perspective. In this research, it will be pertinent to examine the value of protecting the Malaysian eco-tourism and how sectoral influence can converge into a framework of sustainability. The use of a conceptual model will allow us to justify how eco-tourism could be a flourishing business advantage to the tourism businesses here in Malaysia. The paper will examine how the adoption of a strategic framework based on two dimensions; namely strategic opportunities and tourism development. To be examined to ensure eco-tourism could be made a competitive advantage to the tourism sector in Malaysia. During the course of investigation several issues need to be examined, for instance, is if there is enough taking place for us as a business entity to protect our fragile environment. Using the conceptual framework; are we able to sustain the environment from an economic perspective? It is the economic growth, commencing through the Industrial era that had given rise to the issues of sustainability.

Competition between tourism destinations on national, regional and local levels continues to intensify due to the pressure of globalization (Friedman, 2006). Accordingly, Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) have to constantly reevaluate and re-engineer existing tourism offers to reposition themselves in a highly competitive tourism market. At the same time, tourism development pressures destination areas through increased resource consumption and, land fragmentation while policy measures to promote more sustainable tourism are progressing only slowly due to local resistance. Therefore, destinations are one of the most difficult entities to manage because of diverse, often conflicting interests of different stakeholder groups (Carmin et al., 2003). Consequently, finding the right balance between the economic development of tourism destinations, the conservation of their resources and the well-being of the local population has become a challenging task for many DMOs (Notarstefano, 2008). The aim of this paper is to present the results of exploratory research conducted in 2011 in seven European countries among 72 managers of Destination Management Organizations (DMOs). The research objective was to evaluate the DMOs’ efforts and their role in the set-up and implementation of sustainable tourism principles in the management of tourist destinations by means of a quantitative and qualitative analysis. 4 flight attendants hospitalized for injuries from turbulence

Four American Airlines flight attendants were injured during turbulence last week, the airline said.

American Airlines flight 2905 departed from Tampa at 5:39 p.m. Thursday heading to Charlotte when the Airbus A321 encountered "unexpected turbulence," an American Airlines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Four of the six flight attendants working the flight were taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. No further information on their injuries has been disclosed.

None of the 154 passengers were injured from the turbulence and the aircraft landed safely at its destination on-time.

"We thank our crew members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding," the airline said in a statement.

This incident is just the latest in a series of turbulence-related events , which is becoming more common, even in the warmer months. Climate change-driven impacts on the atmosphere will likely cause more frequent and severe turbulence, particularly clear air turbulence, which is harder for pilots to predict because there are no visible warning signs. In May, a Singapore Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence that resulted in 30 people injured and one person dead from a heart attack.

Earlier this month, Korean Air announced it would stop serving instant ramen as a safety precaution due to worsening turbulence.

How to avoid the worst of jet lag and maximize your travel time

It's the bane of many travelers: jet lag. Nobody wants to lose out because they're too tired to enjoy the delights of their vacation spot.

Here are some tips on how to handle jet lag, wherever you might end up.

What is jet lag?

Scientists define jet lag as the effect on the human body of traveling across different time zones. Our bodies have biological clocks programmed into almost every cell in the body, according to Sofia Axelrod, who studies circadian rhythms at Rockefeller University in New York.

"The clock is set by the 24-hour light and dark pattern," Axelrod said. "Every morning when we wake up, specialized (light) receptor cells in our retina receive a daylight signal, which is transmitted to the brain and from there, the whole body."

When we travel to another time zone, our eyes receive the daylight signal at a different time than usual, causing our internal clocks to reset. But that process can take awhile—and it's during that adjustment period that we feel the effects of jet lag.

Is jet lag preventable?

Yes, but that can come at a cost. Malcolm von Schantz, a professor who specializes in circadian rhythms at Northumbria University in Newcastle, said that flying in premium cabins where travelers can stretch out and properly rest, can ward off sleep deprivation , but he acknowledges that isn't an option for most people. Still, he said that timing your flights can help. For example, he suggests flying from Europe to North America during the day, so that it's evening when passengers land and they can get a proper night's sleep.

"If you take the evening flight instead, you'll be woken up at midnight to be served breakfast and land an hour or two later, when both jet lag and sleep deprivation will hit you hard and simultaneously," he said.

Von Schantz also said flying in newer models with a lighter frame, like the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 Dreamliner, would help. That's because those planes can maintain a more comfortable cabin atmosphere, which should help travelers feel less worn out by the end of their flights.

What should you do when you arrive?

Experts say getting exposure to sunlight is critical to resetting your internal body clock. That can mean either avoiding morning sun or deliberately seeking it out, depending on where you've travelled from. Getting light in the morning will advance your body clock, while light exposure in the early evening will delay it. Naps are OK, but scientists warn against taking long siestas later in the day, as that might compromise your ability to sleep through the night.

Are there supplements or medicines that might help?

Melatonin, a hormone that the brain naturally produces when the body thinks it's night, can be helpful. But it's not available everywhere and in some countries like the U.K. and France, a prescription is required. Von Schantz of Northumbria University said that one of the advantages of melatonin is that you can start taking it before your journey, to reset your internal clock quicker.

"If you're in a part of the world where melatonin is available over the counter, you can combine the effects of light and melatonin to achieve the advance or delay (in your body clock) that you need," he said.

What can you do to deal with the effects of jet lag?

Business travelers might want to consider arriving a day or two ahead of any important meetings or events, said Russell Foster of Oxford University, who has authored a book on circadian rhythms.

"You should just be aware that if you're jet-lagged, you're more likely to make unwise decisions, be less empathetic and unable to multitask," he said.

Tourists might not need to be as alert as business travelers , but they should still be careful, he said. He advises tourists to get caught up on their sleep before doing anything potentially risky or that requires concentration, like driving.

Foster said he tries to maximize his light exposure when he arrives at a new destination to offset jet lag. But he also has a fallback strategy: coffee.

"I'm not suggesting it's an ideal thing to do, but caffeine will help override the sleepiness and cognitive impairment you might be feeling as a result of jet lag," he said.

We just learned where the asteroid that ended dinosaurs came from

Geological clues suggest that the space rock that created Chicxulub crater was a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite.

Various mammals and dinosaurs gathered in an open forest by the water, looking upwards as they watch a fiery asteroid flying down to Earth across a cloudy pink sky.

The Cretaceous period ended in a terrible disaster that had its origins beyond Jupiter.

An asteroid more than six miles wide slammed into prehistoric Central America, kicking off a global heat pulse and years of winter that wiped out more than 60 percent of known species. It was famously the end of the non-avian dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops , as well as flying pterosaurs, seagoing mosasaurs, and other reptiles.

Now geologists have identified where the devastating asteroid came from. The immense chunk of rock wasn’t orbiting nearby but had journeyed across our solar system on its collision course.

The impact left behind a giant crater known as Chicxulub beneath the Mexican coast and One of the first signs of the impact geologists noticed was a global spike in a metal called iridium in the layer of rock dividing the Cretaceous from the following period, the Paleogene. The iridium-rich layer is known as the K/Pg boundary, and a similar metal in the same rocks has provided the geological fingerprint for where the asteroid came from. The key metal is ruthenium.

Just like iridium, ruthenium is a metal that’s rare in Earth’s crust but is often found in meteorites and asteroids. The extinction boundary rocks have elevated ruthenium levels. What makes ruthenium key, however, is that levels of isotopes, or different versions of the element, vary between meteorites from different parts of our solar system.

“The idea for this study was born on the rationale that if different types of meteorites can be distinguished according to their ruthenium isotope compositions, and if the enrichment of elements such as ruthenium in the boundary layer is of extraterrestrial origin, the ruthenium isotope data from the boundary layer samples would provide information on the type of impactor,” says study author and University of Cologne geologist Mario Fischer-Gödde .

Meteorites from near the sun, for example, have different chemical signatures than those from the outer part of our solar system. It’s these variations that allowed Fischer-Gödde and colleagues to determine where the Chicxulub impactor came from.

The new analysis, published today in Science, identifies the extinction-triggering asteroid as a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite that formed in the outer part of our solar system. Experts refer to such chunks of space rock as C-type asteroids .

“This is fantastic work,” says Arizona State University astrophysicist Steven Desch , who was not involved in the new study. The new data provide striking evidence that the extinction-triggering asteroid was a carbonaceous chondrite, he notes, and not a comet or other potential impactor. The ruthenium signature left behind by the Chicxulub asteroid differed from those of several other impact craters included in the study. The other samples, between a range of 36 and 470 million years old, were most consistent with S-type asteroids that formed in the inner part of the solar system. “That’s an amazing discovery,” Desch notes, as the data narrows down where other meteorites that have left their mark on the Earth originated. Impactors have come from different parts of our solar system rather than a single reservoir.

In addition to identifying the Chicxulub asteroid’s origins, the new study underscores that it truly was the asteroid impact that caused the disaster at the end of the Cretaceous. Huge volcanoes called the Deccan Traps erupted in ancient India before and after the asteroid’s arrival and until recently have been considered a competing extinction trigger .

But patterns of iridium, ruthenium, and similar elements in the boundary layer are inconsistent with the basalt rock formed by the prehistoric eruptions and instead, best match a massive space rock impact. In fact, previous research indicates that greenhouse gases emitted by the Deccan Traps likely softened the impact winter that followed the asteroid strike and mitigated its after-effects. How the asteroid went from floating in space to triggering a catastrophe for life on Earth is still murky. In the early part of our solar system’s history, Fischer-Gödde says, gravity pulled most asteroid-sized space rocks together to form planets and moons. The Chicxulub asteroid must have somehow escaped this fate. “The asteroid of the [Chicxulub] impact was stored in a stable orbit until 66 million years ago,” Fischer-Gödde says. At some unknown point prior to impact, the migration of Jupiter through space may have pulled the asteroid out of its orbit and sent it on a one-in-a-million shot towards Earth.

The findings make the impact at the end of the Cretaceous all the more unique in Earth’s history. “About 80 percent of all meteorites hitting the Earth derive from S-type asteroids,” or those from the inner part of the solar system, Fischer-Gödde says. The dino-killer was different, a distant part of the solar system that came for an unfortunate visit.

Parliamentary staff poised for pay rise with new cultural leave and travel allowances

The agreement also mirrors the government's priorities for the broader workforce, including expanded parental leave and family and domestic violence leave.

The federal government has offered political staffers the maximum pay rise allowed under government rules, along with new travel allowances, leave for cultural activities and extra pay for staff who speak multiple languages.

The proposed enterprise agreement, which was put to a vote on Monday and is widely expected to be approved, will give approximately 2,000 political, ministerial and electorate staff a pay rise of 11.2 per cent over three years. Four per cent will come in the first year, with 3.8 per cent and 3.4 per cent in the subsequent two years, respectively.

It is the first agreement negotiated under a federal Labor government in over a decade and includes a flurry of new conditions, many of them mirroring the government's economy-wide industrial relations priorities including expanded parental leave, new rules for casuals and family and domestic violence leave.

Sources said the agreement had strong support from staff, especially those from the offices of Labor, Greens and independent MPs, but several Liberal staffers told the ABC they believed the deal was "totally ridiculous" in a broader economy in which "people are doing it tough".

A new allowance of up to $40,000 a year will be available to electorate staff nominated to travel with their parliamentarian, in addition to the usual Canberra travel allowance for advisers.

An allowance of up to $1,500 will go to staff who use a language other than spoken English in their work, including First Nations languages, Auslan and braille.

There will also be three days of leave for any staff to attend significant religious or cultural obligations associated with [their] particular faith or culture.

First Nations staff will also receive one day a year for NAIDOC activities and up to six days over two years to fulfil ceremonial obligations.

Casual staff will receive a pay loading of 25 per cent, up from 20 per cent, and must be paid for a minimum of three hours' work every day they are engaged.

Labor and Liberal staffers trade barbs

One Liberal source said the deal had effectively shielded highly-paid staffers from what they had lost in the government's redistributed stage 3 tax cuts, which began on July 1.

"The government is cutting the tax reduction for those over $180,000 but insulating advisors on $250,000 a year," the staffer said.

"What's a tradie on $180,000 going to get over three years? Not 11.2 per cent."

The pay rise mirrors what the CPSU achieved for the public service in a separate negotiation with the federal government.

Senior advisers to MPs and senators will be paid between $145,000 and $295,000 in the first year of the agreement. The lowest-paid staff will be paid $72,000, a group which includes local electorate staff, whose workload includes handling constituent complaints and helping constituents interact with government agencies.

The proposed agreement also includes 18 weeks of parental leave for a primary carer, up from 16, and a pathway to 18 weeks for a secondary carer by the end of the agreement in 2027.

Studies assistance has been increased by 50 per cent and "enhanced career transition payments" have been doubled to $1,000.

There is also a one-off payment, which is not included in a copy of the agreement obtained by the ABC but which sources said was in the vicinity of $1,000.

The Liberal source said some of the entitlements agreed to were repeatedly raised and rejected during enterprise bargaining rounds under the former Coalition government.

"Now they have carte blanche because there are more Labor staffers. They've asked for everything but the kitchen sink, and they got everything plus the kitchen sink."

But several Labor staffers told the ABC Liberal staffers had not raised those concerns during the negotiation process.

"The Liberals didn't say a word about this until after the vote had been taken to give them a pay rise. So they wanted to make sure they got the money first, then whinge about it," one senior staffer said.

"They didn't oppose it during the vote. They don't recommend a no vote. They didn't issue any materials that would have opposed this."

The staff ballot on the offer closed at 2pm on Monday and followed months of negotiations between staff representatives, unions and the Department of Finance, which acted on behalf of Special Minister of State Don Farrell.

The outcome of the vote is expected to be confirmed imminently.

The CPSU and Mr Farrell's office have been contacted for comment.
