How to Start a Natural Hair Product Line at Home

By: Author Tony Martins Ajaero

Home » Business ideas » Beauty Care Industry » Cosmetics Line

More women are transitioning back to natural hair, and while this might be a feat to applaud, caring for the natural hair is quite different and tough. If you have natural hair and have tried several products that have worked on your hair, and you know these products will be of immense help to others, then it is time to think of starting your own natural hair care product line business .

You will need to ensure that you have the required start-up capital because this will be necessary to help you procure the raw materials and ingredients for your natural hair care products as well as the packaging. You will also need to know if you want to use normal ingredients or go organic.

Steps to Starting a Making Natural Hair Care Line

1. understand the industry.

According to a research by Mintel, more blacks in the united states of America are gravitating towards natural hair care products and this has seen an increase in the sale of hair styling products, which jumped to 26.8 percent between 2013 and 2015, reaching a value of $946 million which represents more than 16 percent of the overall hair industry. The move to naturals has also seen a drop in the sale of relaxers.

According to IBISWorld, industry revenue for natural hair care products is projected to reach $212 million by 2017 growing by 2.8 percent between the periods of 2011 and 2016. Even though the economy is slowly recovering, spending power amongst the blacks according to The Nielson Co has increased tremendously within a decade and is still expected to grow some more within the next decade.

The increase in production of organic and natural hair care products has been fueled by the approval given by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the FDA. What has fueled demand in this industry is the change in the lifestyle of consumers as they now demand chemical-free hair products.

More than 51 percent of blacks in the United States have resorted to natural hair care products and yet demand shows no signs of slowing down as sales have been projected to reach $1.4 billion in the year 2022.

According to a research by Mintel, 35 percent of blacks with natural hair also like to change hairstyles at least once in a month, with favorite styles including coloring of the hair. 19 percent of black women have continually changed their hair care products because they can’t find what is right for them.

Even though more customers have shifted to natural hair products, it hasn’t stopped the high demand for hair extensions, wigs and weave as 44 percent of black women with natural hair claimed to have a wig, while 38 percent planned to get one within the year.

Even though there are new entrants into the natural hair care product line of business, the industry is not expected to grow tremendously according to IBISWorld and this is due to the fact that the larger companies will continue to acquire the smaller ones. Also, because of stiff competition in this industry, it is hard for new entrants to come in much less break through.

2. Conduct Market Research and Feasibility Studies

  • Demographics and Psychographics

The demographic and psychographic composition of those who require natural hair care products are not only individuals that have natural hair but those who are also transitioning to natural hair and even those who don’t have natural hair but use the products anyway.

So, this is basically for women in different adult age groups with even a few men as well. Also, it has been said that Caucasian women are more likely to be customers of hair care product lines that women of other races use. This does not mean that the demographics is limited to just these ones.

3. Decide What Niche to Concentrate On

Starting a natural hair care product line business is an all-encompassing business as your products would need to be tested before they can be sold to others. However to generate more revenue for your business and boost your bottom line, you can go into several niches in order to cater to a wide variety of your market.

While it is usually easier for large scale companies to specialize in several niches, thereby offering more to their customers; small scale businesses usually stick to just one or two unique niches and use that to stand out in the industry. Some of the niche areas that you may decide to get into after starting your natural hair care product line business are;

  • Natural hair care product line
  • Organic natural hair care product line
  • Hair kits and accessories
  • Sale of other hair care products

The Level of Competition in the Industry

While you might have tried on your hair products and think that your target market should automatically fall in love with it, you will need to contend with running the business and making it a success. First, the amount you intend to use in starting your natural hair care product line business will go a long way in determining what scale you intend to start on and how effective this would likely be against your competitors.

If you intend to compete favourably against your competitors, you would need to focus first on those that are offering the same services as you, so that you can manipulate any gap and use this to offer better products to your customers. What most clients are looking for when they purchase hair care products is one that would meet their expectations.

4. Know the Major Competitors in the Industry

Every industry has brands that stand out and the natural hair care product line industry is no different. The brands that stand out are those that are well recognized by the target market.

These brands either stand out due to the effectiveness of their products, their marketing strategies or they must have been in the industry for a long time. Therefore some of the leading natural hair care product line brands in the United States of America are;

  • Yelani all-natural hair care products
  • Alikay Naturals
  • Amazing Botanicals
  • Camille Rose
  • Design Essentials
  • Kinky Curly
  • Koils By Nature
  • The Mane Choice
  • Tropic Isle Living
  • Sunny Isle JBCO
  • Uncle Funky’s Daughter
  • Lawrence Ray Concepts
  • The Detangle Brush
  • TGIN (Thank God I’m Natural)
  • Jane Carter Solution

Economic Analysis

The natural hair care product line industry is a huge one and according to analysis, revenue in this industry is likely to increase by 5 percent each year. However, most of the natural hair care products that are being produced in the industry are by major brands, while the other few are being shared by independent natural hair care product businesses.

However, if you are a new entrant that has found the right niche, you will have no problem at all standing out. If you intend to build your own natural hair care product line empire, you might need to decide if you want to concentrate on women, men or both; adults, kids or both.

You will need to identify the ethnic distribution that is dominant in your target area and know what their hair care needs are, what they expect from a natural hair care product and what they also expect from you as the producer of a natural hair care product line.

Another decision that you would need to look into is your geographic location. The location of your natural hair care business is very important because it would be useless to produce natural hair care products for African American women in Utah as opposed to doing so in Georgia.

Even if you are located far off your target market, you must determine the cost of ensuring that the products get to the target market by engaging in massive publicity and also getting the big stores to put your natural hair care products on their shelves.

5. Decide Whether to Buy a Franchise or Start from Scratch

Starting from scratch gives you the opportunity to be in control of your business and draft the strategies that would help make your business become a force to be reckoned with. Starting from scratch however involves you having to deal with enough paperwork and making certain decisions that could either grow or destroy your business.

Buying a franchise on the other hand allows you to worry less about the minute details of the business such as where to source for products, getting the right equipment or even marketing strategies that would aid your business grow to the level you want.

It should however be noted that the natural hair care product line isn’t one that involves buying a franchise, as manufacturers of these products usually prefer to have their names on the product instead.

6. Know the Possible Threats and Challenges You Will Face

Every business in existence, either new or old, is usually faced with threats and challenges that might make the business fail, which is why you must be prepared as an entrepreneur to face any challenges that you may encounter by drafting strategies to help you deal with them.

Some of the threats and challenges that you may likely face will come from stringent and unfavorable government policies, the arrival of a competitor offering same or better services, inability – either financially or via human capital – to meet with the growing demand of customers, and the downturn of the economy which will affect the purchasing power of our target market.

7. Choose the Most Suitable Legal Entity (LLC, C Corp, S Corp)

Having a legal entity is very important for your natural hair care business, otherwise you will not be taken seriously by major retailers and stores when trying to get your business out to your target market. Also, if you do not have a legal entity, there is no way that you can seriously compete with other brands or even employ anyone to work for you.

choosing a legal entity means that you have plans to grow your business and become a force to be reckoned with in your industry. It should be noted that any business structure you pick comes with tax and legal implications. There are four basic types of legal entities in the United States of America and they are;

Sole proprietorship is the most basic and simplest form of legal entity to set up. As an entrepreneur using this business structure, you own all the profits as well as all the debts incurred by the business. Partnership form of legal entity involves two or more people as partners.

A corporation is usually more complex and is for larger companies that have more than your average number of employees. A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a more preferred form of legal entity because of the advantages it has.

Choosing a legal entity is serious business and you would need to seek the advice or engage the services of a law attorney to help you choose the legal structure that is best for your natural hair care product line business.

8. Choose a Catchy Business Name from the ideas Below

Choosing the right name for your business is very important because your company name precedes your products. So it is absolutely necessary that you choose a business name that is not only unique, creative or memorable but one that allows your target market know that this is the industry that you are in.

  • Sharon Rose Kinky Hair Products

  • Vixen natural Hair Care Products
  • Yo’girl natural Hair Care Products

9. Discuss With an Agent to Know the Best Insurance Policies for You

Regardless of the size of your business and what legal entity you intend to use for your business, having insurance for your natural hair care product line business is very necessary.

The reason why you need an insurance policy is that as much as you are sure that your natural hair care products are good, you can still get sued by a customer who didn’t get the result they were expecting, and for this you would need to insure your business so as to be personally protected from any liability.

If you are confused about the kind of insurance to get for your business, it is best you approach an insurance agent or broker for advise on which would best suit your business. However, some of the basic insurance policies that you might need to think of purchasing if you intend to start your natural hair care product line in the United States of America are;

  • General insurance
  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Workers’ Compensation Insurance
  • Business Property Insurance
  • Commercial Auto Insurance
  • Business Owner’s Policy (BOP)
  • Hazard Insurance

10. Protect your Intellectual Property With Trademark, Copyrights, Patents

The natural hair care product line is one that involves the production of hair care products by mixing several ingredients together. Some of the ingredients are usually sourced from places that will give the hair products some form of distinctiveness.

This distinctive nature is usually what an entrepreneur in this kind of business seeks to protect by intellectually filing to protect his hair care products.

If you are out to protect the uniqueness of your natural hair care products, the logo of your company, your business name and any other vital piece that you would not want your competitors copying, then you would do well to file for intellectual property protection for your natural hair care product line business.

11. Get the Necessary Professional Certification

12. Get the Necessary Legal Documents You Need to Operate

It is very essential that you have the required documentation in place before launching your natural hair care product line business in the United States of America. Not to have any proper documentation is to get in trouble with the law which could in the end affect your ability to conduct your business.

Therefore, some of the legal documents that you would be required to have in order to successfully run your natural hair care business in the United States of America are;

  • Certificate of Incorporation or Doing Business As (DBA)
  • Business Plan
  • Business License
  • Seller’s Permit ID
  • Operating Agreement
  • Material Data Safety Sheets
  • Non-disclosure Agreement
  • Employment Agreement
  • Insurance Policy
  • Contract Document

13. Raise the Needed Startup Capital

Raising money to start a business isn’t an easy affair which is why it is usually advised that you have a business plan in place as this would help convince your bank, investors and friends of the seriousness of your business to enable them give you the funds that you would need.

Some of the options available to you to raise money for your natural hair care product line business are;

  • Generating start-up capital from personal savings and sale of properties
  • Approaching venture capitalists
  • Sourcing for soft loan from friends and family members
  • Approaching the bank for a loan

14. Choose a Suitable Location for your Business

Choosing a suitable location for your business is very important. However, choosing a location might depend on the scale with which you might be starting your business. If you intend to start your business on a very small scale and want to deal with just the target area in your locality, then you can start this business from home and produce just as much as you can keep up with.

The issue of location for this kind of business is important because even though you will most times have to take your products to the big stores and salons, it doesn’t mean that locating your business in a remote area is okay for you as you will have to commute longer distances.

Also, if you locate your business in an area that is too far, you will need to spend more in creating more publicity so as to increase awareness for your natural hair care products.

15. Hire Employees for your Technical and Manpower Needs

In order to get your products out on the shelf, there are certain things you would need to do such as creating your first product sample, which will involve you sourcing for raw materials and working with a cosmetologist to ensure that you get only the best for your natural hair care products line.

Once you have gotten the sample you need and have perfected it, you can then go into mass production; you will then need to purchase your packaging materials and products in large quantities.

You will need to get bottles, jars and cups to store your products as well as a beautiful label to make your packaging attractive. Other basic equipment you will need are; measuring utensils, pots, metal funnels, heat-safe bowls and spoons and a precision kitchen scale.

The number of employees that you would require in building a solid business structure would vary depending on what scale of business you would be running.

Basically though, you would need a Chief Executive Officer, an admin and human resources manager, marketing and sales executives, business development officer, hair analyzer, production specialist, accountant, front desk officer, cleaner and a driver.

Therefore you would need at least 12 people to be able to run a successful natural hair care product line business and grow it to the level you want.

The Service Delivery Process of the Business

The production process when starting a natural hair care product line business starts from developing products that would meet the specific idea you have in mind. The right ingredients must be used to match the characteristics or performance of the products to be produced.

Most entrepreneurs in the hair care line usually make use of product development and manufacturing laboratories to ensure that the product they intend to formulate is in line with the guiding regulations and requirements of the natural hair care product line industry.

After coming upon the right formula, samples are usually tested for room temperature stability as well as preservative effectiveness in order to determine how long the product is likely to last for, although the industry regulations always put a timeline for products produced.

After the right formula has been found, raw materials are then ordered for in bulk and tested by the lab to check its quality. Once this is done, the products can then be produced. Another thing that is important is the packaging of the product. The different cups, jars or bottles are used for the product.

16. Write a Marketing Plan Packed With ideas & Strategies

Knowing what kind of natural hair care products you intend to roll out to your target market and also knowing who your target market is, will help you draft proper marketing strategies that would help generate revenue for your business.

This is why it is important to conduct a proper market research that will allow you know what your competitors are up to and the best way to penetrate and get a fair share of the market so as to stand out in the industry.

Also, while crafting your marketing strategies, you have to be careful to ensure that they fit right into your marketing budget. Creating strategies that would not fit into your marketing budget might spell doom for your business financially.

Therefore, below are some of the marketing strategies and ideas that you would need to adopt for your natural hair care products line business;

  • Introduce your natural hair care products to salons, spas, supermarkets and other stakeholders in the industry
  • Ensure that your business is listed in yellow pages and in online directories
  • Place adverts in local newspapers and magazines as well as on radio and television stations
  • Distribute handbills, fliers and business cards in various strategic locations
  • Engage in direct marketing and sales
  • Use official website and social media platforms to market our natural hair care products

17. Develop Strategies to Boost Brand Awareness and Create a Corporate Identity

Every brand needs a boost in order to create the necessary awareness that would get the intended target market to become interested in its products or activities. Engaging in activities that would boost the brand of a business is however not peculiar to only new businesses as already existing businesses engage in it as well.

It can sometimes be overwhelming to create a product and constantly engage in activities that would boost the awareness of the product, which is why some entrepreneurs usually engage the services of a brand consultant to help them draft strategies that would effectively promote the brand of the business.

The natural hair care product line industry is one that is stiff with competition especially as most people are now resorting to DIY methods in their homes in order to care for their natural hair, which is why boosting the awareness of your brand is important.

There are several means – both conventional and unconventional – by which one can use in conveniently reaching out to the intended target market. Therefore, the several platforms that can be leveraged on to boost the awareness of your brand as well as create a corporate identity are;

  • Use the testimony from people who have used your products and are satisfied with the results to boost awareness for your brand
  • Use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin and Google Plus to vigorously promote your brand
  • Ensure that you distribute handbills and fliers in various strategic locations
  • Install billboards in various strategic locations to increase awareness about our brands
  • Place advertisements in local newspapers, hair and beauty magazines as well as on radio and television stations
  • Throw contests via our website and social media platforms in order to stimulate awareness about our brand

Our step-by-step video guide below is based on the business planning exercises we provide as part of our Diploma in Beauty Brand Business Management . The diploma is an extensive, six-module course that teaches you how to start a cosmetic business at home and build a beauty brand from scratch. Pre-enrol to find out more about this diploma and our other award-winning courses.

Step 1: Why your beauty business needs a plan

Writing a business plan isn’t just a checkbox task; it’s your roadmap to success. Before diving in, ask yourself why you’re crafting this plan. It’s more than a document—it’s your guide to launching and growing a thriving beauty business.

Although writing a business plan might seem daunting, it’s crucial to focus your energy, time, and resources on achieving your goals. Your plan is not just for investors; it’s a strategic tool for decision-making and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

Take the time to build your business plan, as it involves essential groundwork: discovering your vision, defining your brand, identifying your market, understanding competitors, and mapping out a financial plan. Each step prepares you for success and ensures you’re ready for what’s ahead.

Step 2: Defining your brand mission and vision

Before you dive into designing your beauty brand’s logo or packaging, take a step back and consider why you’re in business in the first place. Your vision and mission are the guiding lights of your brand, and they should come first.

Your vision statement is about your bigger dreams and how you want to make a difference in the world. It’s not just about selling organic products; it’s about the impact you want to have. For instance, at Formula Botanica, our vision is to make natural formulation as commonplace as cookery.

Your mission statement is how you plan to achieve that vision. It should be practical, active, and specific. For us at Formula Botanica, our mission is to “teach the world to formulate,” which we accomplish through our online courses.

Crafting your vision and mission isn’t a quick task or a generic exercise. These statements are the heart of your beauty business, defining why your brand exists and how it serves your customers. Take the time needed to get them right before moving on to the next steps. Total clarity here is crucial, as these statements will guide everything else you do.

Step 3: Defining your niche and customers

Having a clear vision and mission is great, but without knowing your niche or target market, your beauty business might not get off the ground. Understanding exactly who you’re selling to is crucial. You need to know who they are, how they live, and how they shop. This might seem tedious, but this is a crucial step.

Once you identify your target customer, everything becomes easier. You’ll know which marketing messages resonate, what they’re looking for, and how to effectively reach them. Your niche can’t just be ‘organic’ or ‘natural’—those markets are saturated. Instead, explore untapped niches like skincare for women over 50, athletes, or teenage boys.

While you don’t need to follow every trend, thorough market research is essential. Identify your niche and position your brand strategically within the market. Find out about the latest market trends below:

Beauty news: your exclusive guide to the top 10 ingredients for 2024

Step 4: Detailing your beauty products

Your business plan must clearly outline your initial products, their unique selling propositions, and how they meet your target customers’ needs. This might sound straightforward, but many beauty entrepreneurs face costly challenges when they change direction after launching. Often, introducing new products can distract from the essential tasks of marketing and sales.

When you’re formulating natural skincare or haircare, it’s easy to get carried away with a wide array of products. But remember, as a business, you need a cohesive lineup that resonates with your audience and offers a compelling sales proposition. Your products should work together seamlessly as part of a beauty routine that solves your customers’ problems.

You don’t need a massive product range to make a splash in the market. In fact, launching with a single, standout ‘hero’ product can be incredibly effective. Focus on how your products complement each other, and consider the growing trend of sustainable consumption—think about creating a versatile product that delivers multiple benefits.

Step 5: Researching your competitors

Your competitors should have a prominent place in your skincare business plan. While your unique perspective and experiences as a founder give your brand a distinctive edge, keeping an eye on the key players in your niche is essential—especially at your product range’s price point. Understanding your competitors not only keeps you sharp but also provides crucial insights any potential investor will want to know early on.

Researching competitors can be challenging, especially when their websites are filled with PR jargon that doesn’t reveal much. But don’t let that deter you. Dive deeper by looking for interviews with their founders and following them on social media. Competitor research can reveal opportunities for your brand to thrive and uncover strategies to boost customer loyalty and growth. By understanding what works for them and what doesn’t, you can identify their strengths and weaknesses, which helps you position your brand more effectively.

However, don’t become obsessed with your competitors. Instead, check in on their activities every few months. Your goal isn’t to mimic them but to shape your own brand narrative. If you have clarity on your mission, vision, niche, and target customer, you’re already on solid ground. Keeping tabs on the market is simply smart business practice and can guide you to make informed decisions that enhance your brand’s position.

Step 6: Determining your manufacturing strategy

Your manufacturing strategy is a key part of your business plan. Decide whether to produce your beauty products in your own lab , partner with a contract manufacturer, or use private-label products. Each option has its pros and cons and should align with your brand’s mission and vision. Consider whether you plan to stick with your initial choice or switch models as you grow. We cover all this in detail in our Diploma in Beauty Brand Business Management.

Each manufacturing model affects crucial aspects like distribution, logistics, financing, and retailer contracts. How many units do you plan to produce annually? Which model aligns with your ambitions and lifestyle? Your manufacturing strategy directly impacts your overall business model and operational strategy.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but understand the implications of your choice. While making products at home in small batches might seem ideal, many entrepreneurs face rapid growth and need to quickly transition to outsourced manufacturing to meet demand. Consider your vision, time, staffing, and financial situation carefully, as this decision is critical to your success.

Step 7: Determining your retail strategy

We’ve seen many indie beauty entrepreneurs think they can sell direct to consumers from their website alone. But to do this successfully, you need to be a skilled digital marketer—or hire one. While selling directly from your site allows you to keep all the profits, getting your products stocked in stores and online retailers can significantly boost your brand’s visibility. Retailers have established customer bases, while you’ll need to build brand awareness from scratch.

Your work in defining your niche, target customers, and product range should guide you in choosing the right retail partners. Consider where your brand fits: mass, “masstige,” premium, or luxury categories. Which retailers do you want to stock your products, and what are their profit margins? How will these margins affect your manufacturing model and financial forecasts? Should you work with distributors, especially overseas, and how do their margins impact your bottom line?

Address these questions in your business plan. You don’t want to be stuck figuring out how to sell your products once they’re sitting in boxes in your living room or warehouse!

Step 8: Outlining funding options

We might have left finances to last, but securing funding is a thread that runs through your entire business plan. Every decision you make has financial implications, and a firm grasp of your finances is essential for a successful beauty brand.

Your business plan should outline the various funding options available to you, from “love money” from friends and family to bank loans and crowdfunding. Consider both short-term and long-term funding strategies, and be prepared to answer potential investors’ questions. Show them why you and your business are worth investing in. We cover finances in the following posts:

Step 9: Learning about financial forecasting

If you’re reading this, you are likely thinking of starting an indie beauty business. Writing a business plan in your first year is crucial, especially if you’re pre-revenue or pitching to investors. Even without sales, you can highlight key market data and your brand’s potential.

Begin your financial forecast with a timeline showcasing milestones such as launch date, key achievements, brand development, current stage, and investments raised. If you’re already selling, include details of investments, sales, and financial projections.

Don’t forget to factor in hidden expenses like retailer promotions. Stores often expect you to contribute to product promotions, and cash flow is vital. Waiting for retailer payments can lead to cash shortages, halting operations if funds are tied up in stock and you can’t buy materials or fund promotions.

Financial forecasting is integral to your daily business operations, making it essential to regularly update your business plan. Keep a close eye on profit and loss, and track trends monthly. Learn about financial forecasting, and consider hiring an accountant to prepare for day-to-day operations and investor discussions.

Step 10: Using your business plan

Congratulations on completing the first draft of your business plan! Now comes the most crucial step: using your plan effectively rather than letting it gather dust in a filing cabinet. Your business plan is a living document, a roadmap to revisit and adjust as you measure your business’s health and performance. It’s not just for impressing banks and investors at the start. So, how should you use it and how often? Here’s a quick guide:

  • Weekly: Keep an eye on your competitors and market trends. Have things changed that might impact your product range, pricing, or development? While you need time to establish your market position, use your plan to monitor shifts and avoid knee-jerk reactions.
  • Monthly:   Review your financial forecast. Compare your budget against actual sales and expenses to see if you’re on track. Whether you’re ahead or behind, this gives you a clear benchmark for your business’s health and guides your next steps.
  • Annually: Reassess your mission, vision, and niche. Was your initial research accurate? Has your brand and product range proved its concept? A mastermind group or mentor can help you evaluate necessary changes to your core statements. Base these decisions on sound financials, too.

Formulate your future

We hope these insights have provided you with a solid foundation for starting your beauty business. If you dream of creating a brand that’s bigger than yourself—whether it’s a skincare line, haircare range, or makeup collection that transforms lives—we’re here to help you turn that vision into reality. Learn to formulate your own products and bring your brand to market with confidence.

Start-up costs for a beauty business can vary greatly based on your goals and circumstances.  If you choose to outsource, be prepared for higher initial costs, as most contract manufacturers require large minimum order quantities. Branding and packaging can also add up, especially if you’re targeting the luxury market.

How much does it cost to start a beauty business?

Writing a business plan can help you navigate these expenses and plan your finances as your business grows. You can start on a smaller budget by making products at home to sell at local markets. Identify your personal goals and lifestyle needs to estimate your start-up costs effectively.

Indie beauty is booming, and more skincare entrepreneurs are finding their niche in the market. However, simply being “natural,” “green,” or “organic” isn’t enough to differentiate your brand. To stand out, focus on how your products address specific consumer needs and solve real problems. Avoid trying to be everything to everyone. Writing a beauty brand business plan will help you refine your ideas, define a viable product offering, identify your target customer base, and determine your route to market.

Hair Product Business Overview

Before diving into the intricacies of starting a hair product business, it’s essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the hair care market and the impact of external factors such as COVID-19. This knowledge will help you navigate the industry and make informed decisions as you embark on your entrepreneurial journey.

Hair Care Market Trends

The global hair care market is projected to reach over $100 billion by 2025, with significant growth expected in developing regions like Asia and Africa ( Ignition ). This presents a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to enter the hair product business. The market encompasses a wide range of products, including shampoos, conditioners, hair styling products, hair color, and more.

According to Statista, the shampoo segment holds the largest market share, close to 35 percent, followed by hair color and hair conditioner ( Medium ). This indicates the diverse needs and preferences of consumers, creating space for innovation and specialization within the market.

Consumer behavior in the hair care industry is evolving. Individuals seek personal connections with brands, looking for products that align with their identity and self-expression ( Medium ). As an entrepreneur, understanding these shifting consumer preferences can help you develop products that resonate with your target market.

Impact of COVID-19 on Hair Product Demand

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the hair care industry. With people staying at home and avoiding salons, there has been a surge in demand for at-home hair care products. This increase in demand has been particularly notable for products catering to specific needs like hair color and hair styling ( Ignition ).

As an entrepreneur entering the hair product business, it’s important to recognize the changing landscape and adapt your strategies accordingly. Consider the demand for at-home hair care products and explore opportunities to meet the evolving needs of consumers.

By staying informed about market trends and understanding the impact of external factors like COVID-19, you can position your hair product business for success. As you progress through the rest of the business plan, keep in mind the potential for growth and profitability within the dynamic hair care market.

Market Segmentation and Strategies

To start a successful hair product business, it is essential to understand the market segments and develop effective strategies to target those segments.

Key Market Segments

The hair care industry encompasses various market segments, each with its specific needs and demands. By identifying and targeting these segments, you can tailor your products and marketing efforts to meet their requirements. Some key market segments within the hair care industry include:

Ethnic Hair Care: This segment focuses on products specifically designed for various ethnicities and hair types, catering to the unique needs of individuals with textured or curly hair. Understanding the specific challenges and preferences of this segment can help you develop products that address their concerns effectively.

Luxury Hair Care: The luxury hair care segment targets individuals who seek premium quality products and are willing to invest in their hair care routines. This segment often prioritizes high-end ingredients, innovative formulations, and personalized experiences. Developing a luxury line of products can appeal to this segment.

Men’s Grooming: Men’s grooming has gained significant traction in recent years. This segment includes products specifically designed for men, such as styling products, shampoos, and beard care items. Creating a range of products tailored to the unique needs and preferences of men can help capture this growing market.

Eco-friendly and Natural Products: With increasing awareness of environmental issues and a growing demand for sustainable options, the eco-friendly and natural products segment has gained popularity. Developing hair care products that are environmentally conscious, free from harmful chemicals, and cruelty-free can appeal to this segment.

Understanding these market segments and their specific needs will guide your product development process and enable you to tailor your offerings to meet the diverse requirements of your target audience.

Pricing Strategies for Hair Products

When determining the pricing strategy for your hair products, several factors should be considered, including production costs, competition, and perceived value. Here are a few pricing strategies commonly used in the hair care industry:

Cost-Based Pricing: This strategy involves setting prices based on the production costs, including raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, and overhead expenses. By adding a desired profit margin to the total cost, you can determine the selling price of your products.

Competitive Pricing: Competitive pricing involves setting prices in line with your competitors. Researching the market and analyzing the pricing strategies of similar products can help you position your products competitively. Consider factors such as product quality, unique features, and brand value when determining your pricing strategy.

Value-Based Pricing: Value-based pricing focuses on the perceived value of your products in the eyes of the customer. This strategy takes into account the benefits, features, and overall value proposition of your products. By emphasizing the unique selling points and benefits, you can justify a higher price point.

It’s important to strike a balance between profitability and market competitiveness when setting prices for your hair products. Conducting thorough market research and understanding your target audience’s willingness to pay can help you determine the optimal pricing strategy.

Crafting a Marketing Strategy

A well-crafted marketing strategy is vital for the success of your hair product business. It involves understanding your target market, positioning your products effectively, and developing a comprehensive plan to reach and engage your customers. Here are key elements to consider when crafting your marketing strategy:

Define Your Target Market: Clearly define your target market by considering demographic factors such as age, gender, location, and hair type. Additionally, psychographic segmentation, which focuses on lifestyle, values, and attitudes, can provide deeper insights into your target audience. Understanding your target market’s needs and preferences will guide your marketing efforts.

Position Your Products: Differentiate your hair products from competitors by highlighting unique features, benefits, or ingredients. Determine your unique selling proposition (USP) and communicate it effectively to your target audience. This will help create a distinct brand identity and position your products in the market.

Develop a Comprehensive Marketing Plan: A successful marketing strategy requires a well-developed marketing plan. This plan should encompass various marketing channels and tactics, including digital marketing, social media, influencer collaborations, traditional advertising, and public relations. Determine the most effective channels to reach your target audience and allocate resources accordingly.

Remember, a marketing strategy is an ongoing process that requires constant evaluation and adaptation. Regularly monitor the effectiveness of your marketing efforts and adjust your strategies as needed to ensure maximum reach and engagement.

By understanding the key market segments, implementing appropriate pricing strategies, and crafting a comprehensive marketing strategy, you can lay a solid foundation for your hair product business and successfully navigate the competitive hair care industry.

Choosing Distribution Channels

When starting a hair product business, choosing the right distribution channels is essential to ensure your products reach the intended customers effectively. There are several factors to consider in this process, including distribution channel considerations, positioning your product, and analyzing the market for distribution.

Distribution Channel Considerations

When selling hair products, it’s important to consider various distribution channels to reach your target market effectively. Some common distribution channels in the beauty industry include:

  • Direct-to-consumer: Selling products directly to customers through your own website or online platform. This allows for a direct relationship with customers and greater control over the brand experience.
  • Retail stores: Partnering with retail stores, such as drugstores or beauty supply stores, to stock and sell your products. This can provide wider market exposure and access to a diverse customer base.
  • Specialty stores: Distributing your products through specialty stores that cater specifically to beauty and hair care products, like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. These stores often attract a specific target audience and can enhance the perceived value of your product.
  • E-commerce platforms: Utilizing online marketplaces, such as Amazon or Shopify, to sell your products. This can offer a convenient shopping experience for customers and tap into the growing trend of online shopping.

Consider your target market, brand positioning, and the costs associated with each distribution channel when making your decision. For more information on starting a hair product business, refer to our article on how to start a hair product business .

Positioning Your Product

Positioning your hair product appropriately is crucial when choosing a distribution channel. Consider the unique features, benefits, and target audience of your product. For example, if you have a high-end hair care line, it may be more suitable to distribute your products through specialty stores that align with your brand’s image, rather than drugstores or gas stations. This allows you to reach customers who are more likely to appreciate and invest in premium products.

By understanding your product’s positioning, you can select the distribution channel that best complements and enhances your brand image. This alignment is key to attracting the right customers and creating a positive perception of your hair products.

Analyzing Market for Distribution

Analyzing the market is essential when choosing the most appropriate distribution channel for your hair products. By researching and understanding how similar products are brought to market, you can gain insights into the most effective distribution strategies. This analysis allows you to identify gaps in the market and potential opportunities for your products.

Consider factors such as competitor distribution channels, customer preferences, and emerging trends in the hair care industry. By understanding the current market landscape, you can make informed decisions about the distribution channels that are most likely to reach your target audience effectively.

It’s also important to consider the timeliness of the distribution channel. For example, certain products, such as over-the-counter pain medication, may sell better in retail drugstores for immediate relief, rather than online due to shipping times.

Remember to assess the costs associated with each distribution channel, including warehousing costs, rent, and utilities, to ensure that your business remains financially viable.

Choosing the right distribution channels for your hair product business is a critical step in building a successful venture. By considering distribution channel options, positioning your product effectively, and analyzing the market, you can optimize your product’s reach and maximize its potential for success.

Competitive Advantage in Hair Business

When starting a hair product business, it’s essential to establish a competitive advantage to differentiate yourself from competitors and attract customers. In the hair industry, there are various strategies you can employ to gain a competitive edge. In this section, we will explore salon competitive strategies, product line strategies, and the use of technology to achieve a competitive advantage.

Salon Competitive Strategies

A salon can use various competitive strategies to stand out in the crowded hair industry. One approach is to focus on providing exceptional customer service. By creating a welcoming and personalized experience for clients, you can build customer loyalty and positive word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, emphasizing the quality and efficiency of hairstyling can be a competitive advantage, especially for customers who visit frequently ( Salon Proactive ).

To understand potential areas of competitive advantage, consider conducting customer surveys. This can help identify strengths and areas for improvement. Additionally, staying up-to-date with current trends and offering unique services, such as speed, cleanliness, appointment preparation, or aesthetics, can set your salon apart.

Product Line Strategies

Developing a well-curated and diverse product line is another way to establish a competitive advantage. By offering a range of high-quality hair products, you can cater to different customer needs and preferences. Take inspiration from successful companies like Coca-Cola, which introduced multiple varieties to its product line ( StudySmarter ).

Ensure that customers are well-informed about your product offerings. Utilize various means such as videos, photos, live demonstrations, and advertising to showcase the benefits and features of your products. This can help build trust and encourage customers to try and repurchase your hair products.

Using Technology for Competitive Edge

In today’s digital landscape, leveraging technology can provide a significant competitive edge. Embrace online platforms and social media channels to engage with customers, showcase your salon’s expertise, and promote your product line. Utilize visual platforms like Instagram and YouTube to share before-and-after transformations, tutorials, and style inspiration. Engage with your audience by responding to comments, providing helpful tips, and addressing customer concerns.

Consider implementing online booking systems to streamline the appointment process and offer convenience to your clients. Utilize customer relationship management (CRM) software to track client preferences, send personalized offers, and stay connected with your customer base. By harnessing the power of technology, you can enhance customer experience, streamline operations, and strengthen your competitive position.

By implementing salon competitive strategies, diversifying your product line, and utilizing technology effectively, you can establish a strong competitive advantage in the hair industry. Remember to continually assess and adapt your strategies to stay ahead of the competition and meet the evolving needs of your target market. Target Market Definition

Defining your target market is a crucial step when developing a business plan for your hair product business. By identifying and understanding your target market, you can tailor your products and marketing strategies to effectively reach and meet the needs of your customers. In this section, we will explore the process of defining your target market, the role of location in targeting, and the concept of psychographic segmentation.

Defining Your Target Market

Defining your target market involves identifying the specific group of people who are most likely to be interested in and purchase your hair products. This group shares certain characteristics, such as demographics, preferences, and purchasing behavior. By focusing on a well-defined target market, you can create a more focused and effective marketing strategy.

To define your target market, consider factors such as age, gender, income level, and lifestyle. For example, if your hair products are primarily designed for women in their 30s who are health-conscious and have a moderate to high income, you can tailor your marketing messages and product offerings to appeal to this specific group. This targeted approach helps you allocate your resources effectively and maximize your chances of success.

Role of Location in Targeting

The location of your hair product business plays a significant role in defining your target market. The geographical area in which your salon is situated can influence the demographics and preferences of your potential customers. For instance, a salon located in a family-populated suburb may attract older clients with higher incomes, while one in a bustling city may cater to a younger demographic with modern tastes.

Understanding the local market is essential for tailoring your products and services to meet the specific needs and preferences of your target customers. Conducting market research and analyzing the demographics and competition in your area can provide valuable insights into the characteristics and preferences of your target market.

Psychographic Segmentation

Psychographic segmentation is another method to define your target market for a hair product business plan. It involves grouping people based on their expected behaviors, thoughts, and lifestyle choices. By creating personas, which are generalized biographies of potential clients, you can gain a deeper understanding of their preferences and adjust your services, pricing, and salon ambiance accordingly.

Psychographic segmentation takes into account factors such as values, interests, attitudes, and lifestyle choices. For example, if your target market consists of environmentally conscious individuals who prioritize organic and sustainable products, you can develop hair products that align with these values.

By combining demographic data with psychographic segmentation, you can create a comprehensive profile of your target market. This information will guide your marketing efforts, product development, and overall business strategy.

By defining your target market, considering the role of location, and utilizing psychographic segmentation, you can develop a business plan that effectively targets and appeals to your ideal customers. Understanding their needs, preferences, and behaviors will enable you to create hair products and marketing strategies that resonate with your target market, setting your hair product business up for success.

Social Commerce and Partnerships

In today’s digital age, leveraging social commerce and forming strategic partnerships can play a crucial role in the success of a hair product business. This section will explore the benefits of social commerce, the concept of a virtual franchise, and the advantages of collaborating for growth.

Leveraging Social Commerce

Social commerce has become an increasingly popular avenue for businesses to reach their target market and generate sales. By utilizing social media platforms and messaging apps, hair product businesses can tap into a vast network of potential customers, including salon owners, stylists, and hair enthusiasts.

One example of successful social commerce implementation is the collaboration between a leading hair and beauty brand and Tada, a social commerce platform. The brand experienced a remarkable increase in revenue and sales by partnering with Tada, with resellers’ sales up by 452% compared to before adopting social commerce ( Tada Blog ).

Through social commerce, salon owners and hairdressers can become resellers and set up virtual stores to sell hair products directly to their customers. By sharing their virtual store links on social media or messaging apps, they can expand their reach and connect with a broader audience, increasing sales and generating income while staying safe at home ( Tada Blog ).

Benefits of Virtual Franchise

A virtual franchise allows salon owners and hairdressers to become part of a larger network while maintaining their independence. By joining a virtual franchise program, they can leverage the brand recognition and support of an established hair product business while still operating their own virtual store.

Virtual franchise programs, like the one offered by Tada, enable salon owners and hairdressers to generate income by selling hair products without physical involvement. This model provides convenience, flexibility, and the opportunity to earn additional revenue streams. By partnering with a trusted virtual franchise provider, salon owners can focus on their core expertise while benefiting from the brand’s marketing and distribution capabilities.

Collaborating for Growth

Collaboration can be a powerful growth strategy for hair product businesses. By partnering with complementary businesses or industry influencers, a hair product business can expand its reach, tap into new markets, and benefit from shared resources and expertise.

Through collaborations, hair product businesses can create win-win situations. For example, collaborating with local salons and hairdressers can help increase brand visibility and create opportunities for cross-promotion. By offering exclusive discounts or promotions to salon clients, a hair product business can incentivize customers to try their products and potentially become long-term customers.

Furthermore, collaborations with industry influencers, bloggers, or social media personalities can help increase brand awareness and credibility. Influencers can showcase the hair products to their followers, providing authentic testimonials and driving potential customers to the hair product business.

By leveraging social commerce and forming strategic partnerships, a hair product business can unlock new avenues for growth and establish a strong presence in the market. These approaches allow salon owners, hairdressers, and the business itself to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

Whether you’re looking to create your own product line or develop existing formulations, there are plenty of resources available to help make your dream a reality. From sourcing natural ingredients to developing an online presence, it’s time to take the first step towards building a sustainable and successful natural hair product business. Conducting market research to identify target customers

Before starting any business, including a natural hair product business, it is important to conduct thorough market research to identify your target customers. This will help you develop a product that meets your customer’s needs and preferences, allowing you to provide the best product possible.

  • The first step in market research is to define your target audience. Consider demographic factors like age, income level, location, etc. to identify your potential customers.
  • Once you have identified your potential customers, conduct surveys, focus groups, and interviews to gain insight into their habits, preferences, and needs. This will help you identify product features that will appeal to them.
  • Examine the competition in your niche. What are their strengths and weaknesses? What features do they offer, and what sets your product apart from theirs?

Understanding your target audience is critical for success in any business, and market research plays a significant role in achieving this. By gathering and analyzing information about your target market, you can develop a product that meets their needs, effectively promoting your business and driving long-term growth.

Formulating all-natural ingredients for hair products

Formulating all-natural ingredients for hair products can seem like a daunting task, but it’s not as complicated as you might think. The first thing you need to do is research the ingredients you want to use and their specific properties. This will help you create hair products that are tailored to different hair types and concerns. For example, if you want to create a moisturizing hair product, you will need to use ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera.

  • Research ingredients: Take the time to research the properties of all-natural ingredients to determine which ones work best for your hair product line.
  • Create a formula: Once you’ve chosen your ingredients, you need to create a formula that makes sense. Start with the base ingredients and then add in other ingredients as needed.
  • Test your formula: It’s crucial to test your formula to ensure that it works as intended. You can test the product on yourself or use focus groups to gather feedback.

You should also consider the quantity and quality of each ingredient you use. Some ingredients need to be used in small quantities, while others need to be used in larger quantities to be effective.

Here is an example of a table you can use when formulating your hair products:

Ingredient Properties Quantity
Shea butter Moisturizing, nourishing 50g
Coconut oil Softening, strengthens hair 25g
Aloe vera Hydrating, soothing 10g

Remember, creating natural hair products is a process that takes time, patience, and dedication. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different ingredients and formulas until you find the perfect combination for your brand.

Registering the business and obtaining necessary licenses and permits

Starting a natural hair product business requires more than just having the perfect product. It involves registering your business and obtaining necessary licenses and permits. This helps to ensure that your business is operating legally and that you avoid any penalties or legal issues. Here are some of the steps you need to take:

  • Register your business: This involves choosing a business name, registering it with the appropriate agencies, and obtaining a tax ID number. You can register with your state’s Secretary of State office or use an online legal service.
  • Obtain necessary licenses and permits: Depending on the location of your business, you may need to obtain various licenses and permits. These can include a business license, sales tax permit, and zoning permit. Check with your local government to determine what’s required.
  • Trademark protection: Registering for a trademark can help protect your business’s intellectual property. It gives you the exclusive right to use your business name and logo and provides legal protection against infringement.

Choosing a business structure

Another key step in registering your business is choosing a business structure. This determines how your business is taxed and the level of personal liability you’ll have. Here are some common business structures:

  • Sole proprietorship: The business is owned and operated by one person. This is the simplest and most popular structure.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC): This structure provides some liability protection for the business owner while still allowing for flexible management and tax treatment.
  • Corporation: A corporation is a separate legal entity from the owners. It provides the greatest level of personal liability protection but is more complex to set up and maintain.

Trademark registration

Trademark registration is important for protecting your brand and establishing credibility with customers. Here are the steps to take:

  • Do a trademark search: This involves checking existing trademarks to ensure that your business name and logo is unique.
  • File a trademark application: You can file an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) online or by mail.
  • Wait for approval: The USPTO will review your application and provide a response within about six months. If approved, your trademark will be registered for 10 years and can be renewed.
License/Permit Description
Business license Required to legally operate your business
Sales tax permit Required if you plan to sell products directly to customers
Zoning permit Ensures that your business is located in a zone that’s appropriate for your type of business

Creating a business plan and budget for startup costs

Starting a natural hair product business is an exciting journey that requires proper planning and a well-thought-out business plan. A business plan acts as a roadmap that helps you identify your target market, assess the competition, and establish business goals and objectives. Creating a business plan and budget for startup costs is crucial to the success of your business. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create a business plan and budget for your natural hair product business.

  • Research and identify your target market: Start by identifying your ideal customers and their needs. Conduct market research to learn about consumer preferences, hair care trends, and buyer behavior. Use this information to create customer profiles that include demographics, psychographics, and purchase patterns.
  • Assess the competition: Identify and evaluate your competitors in the natural hair care industry. Research their products, pricing strategies, distribution channels, and branding efforts. Use this information to identify gaps in the market and differentiate your products from the competition.
  • Create a product line: Develop a unique and innovative product line that meets the needs of your target market. This should include research and development of raw materials, formulation of products, product testing, and packaging design.

Once you have developed a comprehensive business plan, it’s time to create a budget for your startup costs. This budget will help you estimate the cost of starting your natural hair product business, so you can determine how much capital you need to raise. Here are the steps to follow when creating a budget for your natural hair product business:

  • Set up a list of business expenses: Create a list that includes all the costs associated with starting your business, such as product development, raw materials, packaging, manufacturing equipment, shipping, legal fees, and marketing expenses.
  • Determine your fixed and variable costs: Fixed costs are expenses that do not change, regardless of sales volume, such as rent, insurance, and utilities. Variable costs, on the other hand, fluctuate with sales volume, such as raw materials and packaging.
  • Estimate your revenue and profit margins: Estimate your revenue based on your projected sales volume, sales price, and market share. Calculate your profit margins by subtracting the cost of goods sold from total revenue.

Finally, create a financial plan that outlines your startup costs, projected revenues, and profit margins. This will help you set financial goals, determine pricing strategies, and assess the feasibility of your business idea. Remember that a well-executed business plan and budget for startup costs are crucial to the success of your natural hair product business.

Expense Category Estimated Cost
Product development $10,000
Raw materials $5,000
Packaging design and printing $2,500
Manufacturing equipment $15,000
Legal fees $2,000
Marketing and advertising $5,000
Shipping and fulfillment $3,000
Other miscellaneous expenses $2,500

As you can see, creating a business plan and budget for startup costs help you identify the necessary steps to start your natural hair product business and ensure that you have a solid financial foundation for success.

Establishing a Brand Identity and Developing a Marketing Strategy

When starting a natural hair product business, it is important to establish a strong brand identity and develop a marketing strategy that aligns with your goals and objectives. Here are some key steps you can take to accomplish this:

  • Define Your Brand: Clearly articulate your mission, vision, and values. Determine what sets your natural hair products apart from competitors and how you can provide value to your target audience.
  • Create a Unique Brand Name and Logo: Your brand name and logo should be memorable and reflect your brand identity. Take the time to research and brainstorm potential names and logos that align with your brand values.
  • Develop Your Brand Voice: Your brand voice should be consistent across all marketing channels. Determine what tone and language is appropriate for your target audience and ensure that all communications reflect your brand identity.

Once you have established your brand identity, the next step is to develop a marketing strategy. Here are some key elements to consider:

  • Identify Your Target Audience: Determine who your target audience is and what channels they are most likely to engage with. Understanding your audience will help you tailor your marketing efforts to effectively reach and engage them.
  • Determine Your Unique Selling Proposition: Identify what sets your natural hair products apart from competitors and communicate this clearly in all marketing efforts.
  • Utilize Social Media: Social media is a powerful tool for marketing natural hair products. Depending on your target audience, you may want to focus on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter to connect with your audience and build brand awareness.

It is also important to track and analyze the success of your marketing efforts. This will help you refine and improve your strategy over time. Consider utilizing tools such as Google Analytics, social media insights, and customer feedback to inform your marketing decisions.

Marketing Channel Target Audience Key Messaging KPIs
Social Media (Instagram) Millennial women with curly hair All-natural ingredients, curly girl friendly, cruelty-free Engagement, follower growth, website traffic
Trade Shows and Events Natural hair enthusiasts and industry professionals Product displays, demonstrations, educational materials Lead generation, product sales
Influencer Partnerships Beauty and lifestyle bloggers/vloggers Product reviews, tutorials, promotions Brand awareness, website traffic, sales

By establishing a strong brand identity and developing a targeted marketing strategy, you can effectively reach your target audience and build a successful natural hair product business.

Designing the packaging and labeling for products

Designing the packaging and labeling for your natural hair products is crucial. It is the first thing that customers will notice and it plays a significant role in the success of your business. The packaging and labeling should be professional, eye-catching, and informative.

  • Consider the target market: Before designing the packaging and labeling, it is important to consider your target market. What appeals to one demographic may not appeal to another. For example, if your target market is young, trendy individuals, a colorful and playful packaging design may be appropriate. On the other hand, if your target market is older individuals, a more sophisticated and sleek design may be more appropriate.
  • Choose appropriate packaging: The packaging you choose should be appropriate for the type of product you are selling. If you are selling a liquid product, such as a leave-in conditioner, a plastic bottle with a pump may be appropriate. If you are selling a solid product, such as a hair butter, a small jar may be more appropriate.
  • Include important information: Your packaging and labeling should include all the important information about your product, including the product name, ingredients, directions for use, and contact information. Be sure to include any relevant certifications or logos on the packaging, such as a cruelty-free or organic certification.

Apart from the above, you should also consider the design elements such as color, typography, and graphics. These elements should be consistent with your brand’s message and values. A well-designed packaging and labeling can create a positive emotional response and make customers more likely to purchase your products.

Examples of well-designed packaging and labeling

Here are some examples of natural hair product businesses with well-designed packaging and labeling:

Company Product Packaging and labeling

Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly The packaging is fun and playful, with bright blue and purple colors and attractive graphics. The labeling is easy to read, with all the important information clearly displayed.

Take inspiration from these companies, but remember to consider your own brand’s target market and values when designing your packaging and labeling. A well-designed packaging and labeling can be a powerful tool in attracting and retaining customers.

Identifying suppliers for ingredients and packaging materials

One of the most crucial aspects of starting a natural hair product business is finding reliable suppliers for your ingredients and packaging materials. Here’s what you need to know about identifying suppliers:

  • Research and compare suppliers: Take the time to research different suppliers that offer the ingredients and packaging materials that you need. Compare pricing, quality, and delivery times to find suppliers that meet your needs.
  • Check for certifications: Look for suppliers that are certified to provide organic or natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging materials. This ensures that your products meet the standards your customers are looking for.
  • Consider minimum order quantities: Suppliers may require a minimum order quantity for certain ingredients or packaging materials. Be aware of these requirements and factor them into your budget and production plan.

Once you’ve identified potential suppliers, reach out to them to request samples and pricing quotes. This will give you a better sense of their products and pricing before committing to a supplier. It’s important to establish a positive relationship with your suppliers, as they will be critical to the success of your business.

Establishing relationships with distributors and retailers

For those looking to start a natural hair product business, establishing relationships with distributors and retailers is crucial. Here are some key steps to take:

  • Research and identify distributors and retailers that would be a good fit for your products. Look for companies that align with your brand values and target market.
  • Reach out and introduce yourself and your products. Whether through email or in-person meetings, make sure to clearly communicate the benefits and unique selling points of your products.
  • Be prepared with samples and marketing materials to leave behind. This will give retailers and distributors the opportunity to try out and better understand your products.

Building strong relationships with distributors and retailers is an ongoing process that requires regular communication and attention. Keep in touch and stay open to feedback and suggestions from your partners.

Here is a sample table to help keep track of potential distributors and retailers:

Company Name Contact Person Contact Information Notes

Remember, the success of your natural hair product business depends on the relationships you build with your distributors and retailers. Take the time to form strong partnerships based on trust and mutual benefit, and your business will thrive.

Creating a Website for Your Natural Hair Product Business

One key aspect of starting a natural hair product business is creating a website that represents your brand and showcases your product line. This website should be visually appealing, easy to navigate, and provide all the necessary information that potential customers may need.

You can either hire a professional web designer to create a website for you or use website builders such as Wix or Squarespace to create a website on your own. Make sure to include high-quality images of your products, descriptions, prices, and a simple check-out process so that customers can purchase products directly from your website.

Utilizing Social Media to Promote Your Natural Hair Product Business

  • Choose the right social media platforms: It’s important to identify which social media platforms your target audience uses the most, such as Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
  • Consistency is key: Consistently post high-quality content on your social media pages to build brand awareness and gain followers.
  • Engage with your followers: Respond to comments, messages, and feedback from your followers to build a strong relationship and gain valuable insights.

Creating a Social Media Strategy for Your Natural Hair Product Business

In addition to regularly posting content on your social media pages, it’s important to create a social media strategy that aligns with your business goals.

Start by identifying your key business objectives, such as increasing brand awareness, driving traffic to your website, or promoting a new product launch. Then, create a content calendar that includes a mix of promotional and educational content, such as hair care tips, customer testimonials, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your business.

The Benefits of Influencer Marketing for Your Natural Hair Product Business

Influencer marketing can be a powerful tool for promoting your natural hair product business. By partnering with social media influencers who have a large following in your target audience, you can reach a wider audience and build credibility for your brand.

Developing a Customer Service Plan to Ensure Customer Satisfaction and Retention

One essential aspect of starting a natural hair product business is creating a customer service plan that ensures customer satisfaction and retention. Below are some tips on how to develop an effective customer service plan:

  • Understand your customers: To create a customer service plan that meets the needs of your customers, you first need to understand who they are and what they want. Collect feedback, conduct surveys, and engage them on social media to gain insights into their preferences, pain points, and expectations.
  • Set customer service standards: Your customers should know what to expect from your business, and setting clear customer service standards can help you achieve that. Your standards can cover areas such as response time, communication channels, issue resolution, and customer feedback management.
  • Train your staff: Your employees are an essential part of your customer service strategy, and they need to be adequately trained to provide high-quality service. Provide them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to handle customer inquiries, complaints, and feedback professionally.

Another important consideration is creating a feedback mechanism that allows your customers to share their experiences, complaints, and suggestions. This can help you identify trends in customer behavior, areas of improvement, and potential areas of business growth. Some ways to collect customer feedback include:

  • Surveys: Use online surveys or in-store surveys to gather feedback from your customers. Keep the surveys short, to the point, and easy to answer.
  • Social media: Monitor your social media channels for customer feedback and comments. Respond promptly, professionally, and empathetically to any complaints or inquiries.
  • Customer service desk/phone: Have a dedicated customer service desk or phone line where customers can reach you with their feedback and complaints.

The Importance of Customer Satisfaction and Retention

Building a loyal customer base is crucial to the success of any business, and this is especially true for a natural hair product business. Here are some reasons why customer satisfaction and retention are essential:

  • Repeat business: Satisfied customers are more likely to keep buying from you, which translates to increased revenue and a more stable business.
  • Referrals: Happy customers are more likely to recommend your business to their friends, which can help you acquire new customers and grow your business through word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Brand reputation: Your customers’ perception of your business influences your brand reputation. By providing exceptional customer service, you can build a positive brand image and strengthen customer loyalty.

Developing a customer service plan that prioritizes customer satisfaction and retention is a vital part of starting and growing a natural hair product business. By understanding your customers, setting clear service standards, training your staff, and collecting feedback, you can create a customer-centric culture that fosters loyalty and profitability.

Key takeaways

This is a very important choice since your company name is your brand and will last for the lifetime of your business. Ideally you choose a name that is meaningful and memorable. Here are some tips for choosing a name for your hair product line:

  • Make sure the name is available . Check your desired name against trademark databases and your state’s list of registered business names to see if it’s available. Also check to see if a suitable domain name is available.
  • Keep it simple . The best names are usually ones that are easy to remember, pronounce and spell.
  • Think about marketing . Come up with a name that reflects the desired brand and/or focus of your hair product line.

2. Develop Your Hair Product Line Business Plan

One of the most important steps in starting a hair product line is to develop your business plan. The process of creating your plan ensures that you fully understand your market and your business strategy. The plan also provides you with a roadmap to follow and if needed, to present to funding sources to raise capital for your business.

Your business plan should include the following sections:

  • Executive Summary – this section should summarize your entire business plan so readers can quickly understand the key details of your hair product line.
  • Company Overview – this section tells the reader about the history of your hair product line and what type of hair product line you operate. For example, are you a hair styling product, shampoo, conditioner, hair color, or a hair treatment product?
  • Industry Analysis – here you will document key information about the hair product industry. Conduct market research and document how big the industry is and what trends are affecting it.
  • Customer Analysis – in this section, you will document who your ideal or target customers are and their demographics. For example, how old are they? Where do they live? What do they find important when purchasing products like the ones you will offer?
  • Competitive Analysis – here you will document the key direct and indirect competitors you will face and how you will build competitive advantage.
  • Marketing Plan – your marketing plan should address the 4Ps: Product, Price, Promotions and Place.
  • Product : Determine and document what products/services you will offer
  • Prices : Document the prices of your products/services
  • Place : Where will your business be located and how will that location help you increase sales?

Finally, in this section of your plan, you will create a projected growth timeline showing the milestones you hope to achieve in the coming years.

  • Financial Plan – finally, the financial plan answers questions including the following:
  • What startup costs will you incur?

  • What are your projected sales and expenses for the next five years?

3. choose the legal structure for your hair product line.

Next you need to choose a legal structure for your hair product line and register it and your business name with the Secretary of State in each state where you operate your business.

Below are the five most common legal structures:

1) Sole proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is a business entity in which the owner of the hair product line and the business are the same legal person. The owner of a sole proprietorship is responsible for all debts and obligations of the business. There are no formalities required to establish a sole proprietorship, and it is easy to set up and operate. The main advantage of a sole proprietorship is that it is simple and inexpensive to establish. The main disadvantage is that the owner is liable for all debts and obligations of the business.

2) Partnerships

A partnership is a legal structure that is popular among small businesses. It is an agreement between two or more people who want to start a hair product line together. The partners share in the profits and losses of the business.

The advantages of a partnership are that it is easy to set up, and the partners share in the profits and losses of the business. The disadvantages of a partnership are that the partners are jointly liable for the debts of the business, and disagreements between partners can be difficult to resolve.

3) Limited Liability Company (LLC)

A limited liability company, or LLC, is a type of business entity that provides limited liability to its owners. This means that the owners of an LLC are not personally responsible for the debts and liabilities of the business. The advantages of an LLC for a hair product line include flexibility in management, pass-through taxation (avoids double taxation as explained below), and limited personal liability. The disadvantages of an LLC include lack of availability in some states and self-employment taxes.

4) C Corporation

A C Corporation is a business entity that is separate from its owners. It has its own tax ID and can have shareholders. The main advantage of a C Corporation for a hair product line is that it offers limited liability to its owners. This means that the owners are not personally responsible for the debts and liabilities of the business. The disadvantage is that C Corporations are subject to double taxation. This means that the corporation pays taxes on its profits, and the shareholders also pay taxes on their dividends.

5) S Corporation

An S Corporation is a type of corporation that provides its owners with limited liability protection and allows them to pass their business income through to their personal income tax returns, thus avoiding double taxation. There are several limitations on S Corporations including the number of shareholders they can have among others.

Once you register your hair product line, your state will send you your official “Articles of Incorporation.” You will need this among other documentation when establishing your banking account (see below). We recommend that you consult an attorney in determining which legal structure is best suited for your company.

4. Secure Startup Funding for Your Hair Product Line (If Needed)

In developing your hair product line business plan, you might have determined that you need to raise funding to launch your business.

If so, the main sources of funding for a hair product line to consider are personal savings, family and friends, credit card financing, bank loans, crowdfunding and angel investors. Angel investors are individuals who provide capital to early-stage businesses. Angel investors typically will invest in a hair product line that they believe has high potential for growth.

5. Secure a Location for Your Business

When looking for a location for your hair product line, it’s important to consider all of your requirements. You’ll need to find a space that is large enough to house your manufacturing and storage facilities, as well as an office for you and your team. It’s also important to find a space that is accessible and has good transportation links.

Another important factor to consider is the cost of renting or leasing the space. Make sure you have a realistic budget in mind and be prepared to negotiate with potential landlords.

6. Register Your Hair Product Line with the IRS

Next, you need to register your business with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) which will result in the IRS issuing you an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Most banks will require you to have an EIN in order to open up an account. In addition, in order to hire employees, you will need an EIN since that is how the IRS tracks your payroll tax payments.

Note that if you are a sole proprietor without employees, you generally do not need to get an EIN. Rather, you would use your social security number (instead of your EIN) as your taxpayer identification number.

7. Open a Business Bank Account

It is important to establish a bank account in your hair product line’ name. This process is fairly simple and involves the following steps:

  • Identify and contact the bank you want to use
  • Gather and present the required documents (generally include your company’s Articles of Incorporation, driver’s license or passport, and proof of address)
  • Complete the bank’s application form and provide all relevant information
  • Meet with a banker to discuss your business needs and establish a relationship with them

8. Get a Business Credit Card

You should get a business credit card for your hair product line to help you separate personal and business expenses.

You can either apply for a business credit card through your bank or apply for one through a credit card company.

When you’re applying for a business credit card, you’ll need to provide some information about your business. This includes the name of your business, the address of your business, and the type of business you’re running. You’ll also need to provide some information about yourself, including your name, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Once you’ve been approved for a business credit card, you’ll be able to use it to make purchases for your business. You can also use it to build your credit history which could be very important in securing loans and getting credit lines for your business in the future.

9. Get the Required Business Licenses and Permits

The requirements can vary depending on your state, but typically you will need a business license, a manufacturing license and/or a distributor’s license. You may also need to obtain permits for the production of your products, as well as for the storage and sale of those products. Contact your state’s department of revenue or department of licensing and regulations for more information on the specific licenses and permits you will need to start your hair product line.

10. Get Business Insurance for Your Hair Product Line

The type of insurance you need to operate a hair product line may vary depending on the scope of your operations.

Some business insurance policies you should consider for your hair product line include:

  • General liability insurance : This covers accidents and injuries that occur on your property. It also covers damages caused by your employees or products.
  • Workers’ compensation insurance : If you have employees, this type of policy works with your general liability policy to protect against workplace injuries and accidents. It also covers medical expenses and lost wages.
  • Commercial property insurance : This covers damage to your property caused by fire, theft, or vandalism.
  • Business interruption insurance : This covers lost income and expenses if your business is forced to close due to a covered event.
  • Professional liability insurance : This protects your business against claims of professional negligence.

Find an insurance agent, tell them about your business and its needs, and they will recommend policies that fit those needs.

11. Buy or Lease the Right Hair Product Line Equipment

To start your hair product line, you will need some essential equipment. This includes a scale to weigh your ingredients, a mixer to blend them, and containers to store your finished products. You may also want to invest in labeling equipment to create professional-looking labels for your products.

12. Develop Your Hair Product Line Marketing Materials

Marketing materials will be required to attract and retain customers to your hair product line.

The key marketing materials you will need are as follows:

  • Logo : Spend some time developing a good logo for your hair product line. Your logo will be printed on company stationery, business cards, marketing materials and so forth. The right logo can increase customer trust and awareness of your brand.
  • Website : Likewise, a professional hair product line website provides potential customers with information about the products you offer, your company’s history, and contact information. Importantly, remember that the look and feel of your website will affect how customers perceive you.
  • Social Media Accounts : establish social media accounts in your company’s name. Accounts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and/or other social media networks will help customers and others find and interact with your hair product line.

13. Purchase and Setup the Software Needed to Run Your Hair Product Line

To start a hair product line, you will need to purchase some software. Hair product lines typically require software that can help with inventory tracking, order management, and customer relationship management (CRM). There are a number of different software options available, so be sure to do your research to find the one that is best suited for your needs.

There are a few ways a hair product line can make money. The most common is to sell the products directly to consumers. The company can also make money by selling the products to retailers. Another way that the company can make money is by licensing the products to other companies.

Is owning a hair product line profitable?

Yes, owning a hair product line can be profitable. The hair care industry is a multibillion-dollar market. It is projected to grow even more in the years to come. This is because many people are becoming interested in finding new or better products for taking care of their hair.

Why do hair product lines fail?

One of the main reasons hair product lines fail is that they do not keep up with changing trends. Suppose a company does not update its products to reflect the latest trends. In that case, its line will quickly become outdated and lose market share. Another reason hair product lines fail is that they do not target the right market. If a line aims for an older demographic, for example, it may fail to capture the interest of younger consumers. Finally, hair product lines often fail because they do not have a diverse marketing campaign. Suppose a line only uses traditional advertising methods, such as TV commercials and magazine ads. In that case, it will not reach as many consumers as it could if it uses social media and online ads.

How To Start A Hair Product Line: The Complete Guide

Elena Hudgens

Starting a hair product line isn’t easy, and without a well-known brand name behind you, competing against drugstore goods and other salon items will be difficult.

Furthermore, a failing product line may result in angry and disgruntled customers, putting your brand’s reputation in jeopardy. So, how can you establish a hair product line without jeopardizing your company’s reputation?

You’ve come to the perfect site if you want to learn how to establish your hair product brand. We created a comprehensive guide to help start and grow a hair product line from the ground up in this article.

Let’s get started.

Pros & Cons Of Starting A Hair Product Line

Hair product line

When it comes to a successful salon business , introducing a hair product line is even more challenging. To start, you should know the pros and cons of launching a product line as one of your first steps.

This list of pros and cons will help you determine whether or not investing in one is worth it.

  • Work from home: Selling hair products doesn’t need a physical store or office space, and you don’t even need a warehouse to store your inventory. You can choose how much time (or not) you want to put into this business, and depending on your life circumstances and goals, it varies.
  • Stream of alternative income: If your salon has to cancel appointments or can only accommodate a limited number of clients, you could build on your business with the help of some hair products.
  • Starting at a low price: You can get started with your business for as little as $2,500. If you’re running the show solo, you’ll also save on labor costs until your company is big enough to justify hiring someone to help out.
  • Competition is fierce: The hair care industry is very crowded. If you want to get through this space successfully, identify a key market and know what people are looking for, precisely providing what they demand.
  • Dependence on suppliers: Most hair care businesses don’t physically make the products themselves. They will buy from a supplier according to their specifications and choose the right one for that business . You rely on them when it comes down to it.
  • Investment of time: If you want to market a successful hair product line, then you’ll need to put in a lot of work to promote your products and customer service. But if you’re confident that it’s something that can be done, start planning.

Does this sound like something you’d be interested in? If so, we can move forward.

The process of creating a Hair Product Line

Here are the steps you should take to get started:

1. Understand your product’s purpose

A unique selling proposition is a product’s or company’s primary argument to the customer. Every business needs one, and it involves looking at their competitors’ offerings and determining what they do better than them.

Developing this type of message for all products may seem overwhelming, but some strategies can help break down an otherwise complicated task:

  •  Start with your mission statement – try to identify how you want customers to perceive you as a company by reflecting on why your business exists in the first place;
  •  Determine if any features or benefits stand out from other similar businesses who offer those same products as well – these would be good starting points for developing copy explicitly related to those features/benefits;
  •   Brainstorm different types of messaging until something sticks – keep coming up with other ideas even if only one sentence evolves into more strategic content later on.

2. Build prototypes

Don’t give up! You will find the right one in time. Even if you can’t think of anything to start with, work on expanding your knowledge about what interests you, and who knows when it might click? The key is persevering; nothing good comes easy after all.

Keep trying until you figure out something that suits your needs or desires best.

3. Use volunteers to test your products

It is essential to find out what they are looking for and how you can provide it. This may be through social media, surveys, or interviews. This way, you will know if your product could interest them at all before investing too much time in research on the possibility of marketing to them.

4. Make your hair product more effective

A lab expert may be able to help you identify bacteria in your home’s soil. If this is the case, they can recommend ways to get rid of it and avoid future problems with toxic substances on the ground. Laboratory experts are also trained to find solutions that will work best for any given situation within their field.

5. Choose the package and design

Graphic designers will work on your product’s color, layout, typography or advertisement. They’ll help you create a memorable image to represent your brand.

Your graphic designer may work with creatives in other fields such as advertising and marketing professionals. Graphic design is more than simply making things look good: it’s about conveying an idea that communicates what makes your company special.

6. Large-scale production

You can produce your cosmetics or choose to bring in a private label company. Making quality cosmetic products on site is possible with the right ingredients, lab equipment, and recipes.

Along with this option, there are many other opportunities for retailing makeup, such as joining an online marketplace like Etsy or setting up an independent website where you can sell directly from home without having any costs associated with selling at a brick-and-mortar store.

A Step-by-Step Guide To Starting A Hair Product Line

Hair product line 1

You can start by focusing on the technical aspects. Ensure that your products do not contain any harmful chemicals and that they’re safe for public use.

Next, you need to work out how much customer feedback you should consider when creating new hair care products; it may be wise to focus on what people want rather than risk a bad reputation with an unpopular product line!

Additionally, don’t neglect accessibility: if a hairstyle is difficult or impossible to maintain without using certain hair care products, those will likely become popular too.

Are you pumped? Let’s begin.

Step 1: Develop an action plan

If you manage the project hair care line, you must give them you’re all. To get started, take the time to learn how other brands have done it! In this section, we will look at the steps needed for success.

It would help if you looked at all the costs you would incur as you fund the marketing of a hair product line. The number of variables involved will determine the cost, however here are some common costs to consider:

  • Licenses and business formation: Depending on where you live, you need to register your product with the appropriate office (like the FDA ) and pay for applicable business licensing fees. You might also have to pay taxes.
  • Payment processing: Your salon might have a payment processing system of some sort, but you will need an additional one to accept online transactions.
  • Equipment: If you choose to manufacture your products in-house, expect to pay for expensive laboratory and factory equipment. Partnering with a supplier is usually the better idea.
  • Payroll: You may be able to handle launching the product line and processing the initial orders alone, but you might eventually need someone else to help.
  • Liability insurance: Liability insurance is wise to have if a client files a complaint against your product. It ranges from $500 to around $2000 per year. In some locations, it’s legally required.
  • Website: Owning an online business is different from selling hair products at your salon. If you want to look more credible, get your domain name. Also, create a Gmail account- one that’s separate from the current website- specifically for this side of the business.
  • Inventory: If your supplier requires a certain amount of upfront inventory, you might be swayed to pick one over another. You may have been influenced by the initial stock cost rather than other specifics in this decision.

Step 2: Decide which hair products to sell

The first step is knowing your target demographic. Different kinds of people have different hair types, and you cannot appeal to everyone.

You could start by observing the people who come into your salon. What treatments are they asking for most often? What demographic groups do they fall into?

You might want to create a product line that caters to a particular kind of hair, such as curly or thin-hair products, which will be helpful for those with this type of hair problem in need of an answer from you! Or maybe you would like to cater specifically to older women or college students on a budget – when understanding who your target market is, it makes it easier to work out what types of products will best match their needs and wants.

Step 3: Select a supplier or make it yourself

When it comes to small businesses, the best way is to partner with a supplier. This means that you work with a manufacturer and give them your product specifications, where your name or branding will be on these items.

Many suppliers require you to order specific amounts of product upfront if there are no defects in the manufactured goods after use from customer reviews. Suppose this makes sense so far – good. But not only do many business owners find themselves stuck with a surplus of inventory that they’ll never sell because their product didn’t live up to their expectations.

Some manufacturers take advantage of this by charging higher prices than expected because they know people have already put money onto an order before being aware of any issues ahead of time.

Always do your research and ask around. The hair salon industry is tight-knit, especially for small independent salons, so fellow salon owners will be happy to share the suppliers they love with you. So don’t be afraid to ask someone who’s been in the business longer. You can also read online reviews and request samples before making decisions about products or services.

Step 4: Test the products after receiving them

Before you start to market your products, it’s essential to test them first. Companies like Revlon spend thousands of dollars trying their new product ideas before they launch a line – but that isn’t necessary for everyone.

Here are some additional steps you can take:

Receive the sample products and try them out yourself- launching a hair product line

If everything seems fine, then it’s time to start testing. Check whether your sample products pass the sight and smell tests when you receive them from your supplier.

If something looks or smells different than expected, this might need addressing with the supplier as soon as possible so that there is no confusion around production specifications.

During these tests, it is essential not just for things on paper but also for what happens in reality, too, such as how long shampoo lathers? Does my scalp feel dry after washing myself? Is there any irritation afterward? And if so, why would I be willing to put those feelings towards other people by selling my haircare range?

You can start by asking your team members and loyal clients to test the product, giving you their quality reviews. This is crucial in releasing a successful outcome because shows how different hair types react with the formula.

Step 5: Design a brand, a website, and a domain

If you’re considering starting your hair product line, a large portion of your sales will likely come from online clients. You’ll need to pick the right brand name and SEO on your website- something that you may have been doing for other businesses previously.

First, think up a catchy name for your business. If you’ve already given the salon a title, then use this as inspiration or look at these pointers:

  • It will help if you avoid names that are hard to spell.
  • Check out potential brand names on Google. Choose something else if your brand name is already taken or sounds like another company.
  • Don’t limit yourself to one niche if you decide later to branch out.

You can choose a name for your salon and start researching to see what the prospective clients think. Once you’ve selected a name, grab the domain right away. Register handles on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

You can build an e-commerce website using Shopify or an alternative platform, but if you want to use WooCommerce instead. Then you’ll need WordPress hosting from a reliable provider, installing WooCommerce on it; adding packaging images of your product; writing marketing copy for your product pages (with branding), and introducing yourself in short with details about any other services that might be included such as hair styling products mentioned above.

One good way to keep in touch with your customers is by creating a newsletter that sends subscribers hair care tips, special offers, and the latest updates from your business. Use a landing page builder to create an incredible-looking landing page where website visitors can subscribe.

Next up: working on SEO for your e-commerce website. We all know it’s not going to happen overnight – but hopefully, these few pointers will help you get started:

  • Maintain a blog within your site and use relevant keywords to post regularly
  • Use your chosen keywords in the alt text of your images, describing their content.
  • You can use a plugin like Yoast SEO to help you.

It’s important to remember that local SEO is about targeting keywords too! This means by the time you start writing, make sure you include your business location in your content. If people are looking for reviews of businesses close to where they live, what better place than the internet?

Step 6: Calculating your expected income and pricing your products

It would help you decide what you want your products to cost before starting any business. Your pricing options are not limited, but two of the most common are overpricing and underpricing.

If you overprice your product, clients may view it as an unattractive deal, or that quality is low-quality for a high price mark up. Clients will be unlikely to buy this product if they feel like they’re getting something subpar for too much money spent! On the other hand, charging too little might lead people to view these items as cheap and therefore with no value at all (even if there’s not).

Both situations can damage your reputation and bottom line in different ways; make sure you know who will be purchasing from you beforehand to determine prices.

To see if your pricing is competitive, compare the products in your line with those of similar goods by competitors. How much do they charge? If your price point is very different from theirs and it’s not an exclusive product, then you might need to reassess.

Step 7: Expanding your salon’s hair product line

Your salon customers are the best target market for your hair products since you already know what they want and look for in their hair care. For example, a stylist can wash a client’s hair using your shampoo to see how high quality it is themselves.

Your professional stylists have unique opportunities to promote your brand because of their knowledge about clients’ needs and tastes. They will be able to make customized recommendations leading to loyal customers who keep coming back again and again!

Along with nurturing relationships with your salon clients, building a community online is one of the best ways to extend that engagement. The simplest way of doing this is by creating an exclusive Facebook group where you can share hair care tips and encourage discussions between members while promoting some of your most loyal customers looking stunning after visiting your salon.

As these people become more informed about their hair, you have the opportunity to introduce new products or services and build up influence in the industry.

Conclusion

Opening a hair product line with your salon is an excellent way to expand and diversify your business. Haircare products offer a variety and different sources of revenue for the business. You must dedicate enough time and energy to both (or hire someone who will).

On top of this, before you bring these products to the market, you must understand your target audience and the competition so that they’ll be able to design them accordingly. Finally – using their salon could be the perfect opportunity for promotion.

Before bringing your products to the market, you need to understand what target audience and competition exist. This will allow you to design, promote, and price your product accordingly. Finally, use your salon as a primary promotional tool- educate stylists on how to meet clients’ hair care needs with products that suit them best.

How $800 and kitchen experiments helped Stormi Steele create a hair care brand that booked nearly $20 million in sales last year

  • Stormi Steele is the founder of the hair care brand Canvas Beauty, a company she created from her kitchen experiments.
  • Canvas Beauty booked nearly $20 million in sales last year after Steele used paid social media advertising.
  • Steele shares the steps necessary for scaling a haircare business, including how to carve your own entrepreneurial path.

Insider Today

As a child growing up in De Kalb, Mississippi, a small town 120 miles west of the state capital, Stormi Steele felt her aspirations were feared instead of encouraged.

"No one pushed you to be ambitious — if anything, they're more afraid of ambition," said Steele, 32, of her childhood. "But as a child, I was always a dreamer."

Steele's dreams led her to launch Canvas Beauty Brand , a 3-year-old hair care brand built on products she created in her kitchen. Steele booked nearly $20 million in sales last year, according to statements viewed by Insider, and described 2020 as one of the most rewarding years of her life.

Steele shared how she grew from humble beginnings, stayed resilient, and how she scaled her brand from an experiment to a multi-million dollar burgeoning business.

Carve your own entrepreneurial journey through apprenticeships and resilience

Steele's entrepreneurial journey started in the late 2000s, at Mississippi State University, where she studied art. With less than a year left to go, however, Steele dropped out. Academic stress left her nearly suicidal. "I was really lost and frustrated," she said.

Related stories

In a dream, Steele realized she should pursue hairstyling. "I actually woke up in the middle of the night," she said, adding that the idea of starting her own business came to her then. "That was the beginning of the journey."

Around 2011, Steele enrolled in a nearby cosmetology school . However, a few months later — just a semester before she was set to get her license — she got into a physical altercation with her father and fled Mississippi for Huntsville, Alabama.

With no plan and just $800 in her pocket, she started an apprenticeship at a local salon, working under a master stylist who gave her credit hours toward her license.

In Huntsville, Steele was exposed to entrepreneurship — it was something she'd never seen growing up. "I felt like I could do it too," she said of seeing so many women run their own businesses. "They put a fire inside of me to go hard and make a name for myself in this city."

Invest time and money into your dreams to see them grow

Steele started concocting her own hair products around 2012 in her kitchen while styling full-time. She'd mix over-the-counter ingredients, such as flaxseed oil and vitamin E, in an effort to create a solution that would help her hair grow. After about seven months and around $300, she said she perfected the serum, which she started using.

Steele isn't the only hair-focused entrepreneur to start out in the kitchen.

Janell Stephens , founder of Camille Rose, and Monique Rodriguez, cofounder of Mielle Organics, also began their businesses from home by mixing ingredients on the kitchen counter.

In 2013, Steele opened her own salon. By 2015, she was using her hair growth serum on customers and receiving rave reviews— including encouragement to sell it online. She went back to the kitchen, and in 2018, she left hair styling full-time to officially launch Canvas Beauty Brand. In the company's early days, she released a new product each month, including shampoos and deep conditioners, which range between $11.99 to $50.00.

Paid social media advertising can expose your business to billion-dollar markets

Business was slow in the first year, so in 2019, she began investing in paid social media advertising. Steele spent $100 on her first targeted ad, a glossy promotion she shared across Instagram and Facebook, which led to nearly $15,000 in sales in just a few days. In two weeks, she went on to sell nearly $440,000 worth of products.

"Discovery on Facebook and Instagram is powered by personalization — it's what helps people discover products and services that they love," said Christina Cua, director of product marketing on the Instagram Business team. "People coming to Instagram and Facebook expect to see content from brands — over ninety percent of accounts on Instagram follow a business."

Steele targeted the Black hair care community, which had an estimated market value of at least $2.5 billion in 2018 , according to market research firm Mintel . The community centered on Black people embracing their natural hair grew in the last decade, which is a big deal — for centuries, Black hair has been a source of controversy , where the need to assimilate into Eurocentric societies saw the rising usage of harmful chemicals relaxers .

"To have longevity in this industry, you really have to understand the weight of what it is you are providing," said Maya Smith, founder of the natural hair care brand Le Doux. "There's no other cultural group that has to fight to show up in the world the way they were born."

After the success of her first campaign, Steele kept posting ads with before-and-after photos of what her products did for hair. Two months later, the company hit $900,000 in sales, she said. One month after that, she reached $1 million in sales.

Steele continues using paid social media advertising, which helped her company stay afloat in the pandemic. Originally a team of two, she and her husband hired 24 more people last year and moved from a 50-square-foot depository to a 17,000-square-foot factory. After booking nearly $20 million last year, she expects to make another $20 million this year.

Often, she thinks back to those small-town days, where people always told her to be more realistic with her dreams. "There's something about always being told to be more realistic," she said. "But I've always wanted to show people what real really is — anything you can imagine is real."

Strategic Maneuvers: Nailing the Business Plan for Hair Products

Creating a successful business plan for your hair products is like mapping out a journey. It’s not just about having great products but understanding the landscape you’re navigating.

In this article, we’ll break down the key elements using everyday words to make sure your plan is practical and effective.

Table of Contents

1. Market Analysis: Navigating the Hair Care Scene

To start, dive into the world of hair care. Look around, observe the trends, and get a feel for what people want. Think of it like understanding the weather before planning a trip – you want to be prepared for what’s coming. Identify what’s popular, what’s missing, and where your products can find their niche.

Consider the variety of hair types and textures out there. Hair care isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. Take note of the problems people face with their hair – from dryness to frizz – and figure out how your products can provide solutions.

2. Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Standing Out in the Crowd

Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is what makes your hair products special. Think of it as the secret ingredient in your grandma’s recipe that everyone loves. It could be the natural ingredients you use, the specific benefits your products offer, or even the way you’ve built a brand that people trust.

Define what sets your hair products apart in a way that your neighbor can understand. Maybe it’s the organic oils that make your conditioner extra nourishing, or the fact that your brand supports sustainability. Whatever it is, make it clear and relatable.

3. Target Audience: Who’s Your Hair Hero?

Picture your ideal customer – the person who sees your hair products and thinks, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!” Define your target audience in simple terms. Consider their age, style, and what they look for in hair care products.

For example, if you’re offering natural, gentle products, your audience might be health-conscious individuals who appreciate simplicity. Knowing your audience helps you tailor your products and marketing to suit their preferences.

4. Marketing Strategy: Spreading the Word, Online and Offline

Now, let’s talk about getting the word out. Your marketing strategy is like telling everyone about your favorite local café. You want to use channels that reach your audience. If your customers are active on social media, that’s your café’s hotspot.

Don’t forget the offline world. Maybe you distribute pamphlets at local events or collaborate with nearby businesses. Make your presence felt in the neighborhood, just like your favorite café becomes a hub for the community.

5. Financial Projections: Budgeting for the Journey Ahead

Be realistic about your sales forecast. It’s okay to start small – think of it like saving for a rainy day. Outline your expected expenses, from raw materials to marketing costs, and protect your profit margins. This helps you see if your journey is financially sustainable.

6. Operations Plan: Making the Journey Smooth

Your operations plan is like planning your road trip. You need to know how to get from point A (production) to point B (customer hands) smoothly. Detail the steps involved in producing your hair products, from sourcing ingredients to the actual manufacturing.

Finding A Mentor:

A mentor will be able to explain the ins and outs of the company you’re interested in joining.

When it comes to hair care, you’ll need to find someone knowledgeable about the market, including the newest trends and what customers want.

When it comes to beginning a new product line, relationships and networking are critical because it will be much more difficult to get your foot in the door without them.

We also highly suggest joining our certification programs, where you will be learning haircare formulations and being mentored by us effectively to understand the haircare start-up process.

Understand Pros & Cons To Start A Hair Care Line

Pros: .

  • You don’t need a real store or office space to market your hair product brand if you work from home . To store your inventory, you don’t even need a warehouse (we’ll get to that later).

Depending on your life circumstances and ambitions, you can devote as much or as little time to your business as you choose.

  • It is an alternative source of income . Especially those who own a salon, a hair product line will keep the money pouring in if your salon is having to cancel appointments or can only accept a limited number of clients at any given time.
  • Low initial investment . For your first batch of orders, you could spend as little as $2,500. If you go it alone, you’ll save money on labour until your company becomes large enough to justify hiring someone.

Cons:

  • Lots of competition . Because the haircare industry is so busy, you’ll need to pick a major area to focus on, learn what customers want, and give exactly what they want.
  • Dependence on a supplier. Most hair care companies do not manufacture their products. Instead, they contract with a manufacturer to produce the product line to their specifications.

You’ll need to pick the correct supplier because you’ll be completely dependant on them.

  • Time commitment. Building a successful hair product line involves a significant amount of time spent promoting your products, delivering excellent customer service, and engaging with vendors and workers.

However, if you’re certain you’ll be able to complete it, you should begin planning

13 Steps to start a Hair Care Line by yourself

Identify your target market ( demographics & psychographics ).

Individuals who require natural hair care products are demographically and psychographically diverse, including those who have natural hair, those who are transitioning to natural hair, and even those who do not have natural hair but use the products nevertheless.

So, this is primarily for ladies in various adult age groups, with a few men thrown in for good measure.

Therefore, consider the market you want to target and how you want to approach it. Because your market is so important to your business, you must conduct thorough research.

Make certain you understand your target demographic.

Are you interested in creating items for people with kinky hair, curly hair, or both? Do you want to reach out to everyone who appreciates haircare products?

Are you also hoping to carve out a niche for your haircare line?

Hair growth, hair moisture, and hair rejuvenation are all promoted by some product lines.

Other hair care manufacturers recommend that you add shine and lustre to your hair.

This is something you should think about. You’ll be able to decide what kind of products you want to manufacture once you’ve identified your target market.

Create An Action Plan

You will need a deliberate and strategic plan to get started.

Take the time to research how other brands have handled similar situations. We’ll go over the actions you’ll need to take to get started in this section.

First and foremost, you must consider the costs that will be incurred. This will be determined by a variety of things. As you promote a hair product line, keep the following expenses in mind:

Check out the 6 Step Guide To Writing A Perfect Business Plan For Skincare Brand

Licenses and business formation:

Depending on your location, you may be required to register your product with the proper office (such as the FDA), then pay for a business licence and other taxes.

Payment processing:

You need to know about different types of payment processing. Internet transactions will require a separate payment processing system.

You will need to pay for laboratory and industrial equipment if you decide to manufacture your products in-house. In most cases, collaborating with a supplier is a superior option.

Liability Insurance:

Liability insurance is always a good idea in case a customer makes a complaint about your product. The annual costs range from $500 to over $2000. Liability insurance is required by law in several places.

Payroll:

While you may be able to launch the product line and process the initial orders on your own, you may need to recruit staff at some point.

Website and Inventory:

You’ll need your domain name if you want to appear reputable as a seller. You should also set up a separate Gmail account for this business from your one.

Check out How To Find Your Beauty Brand Name That’s Epic

You may be required to purchase a particular amount of stuff in advance by your supplier. The initial inventory cost could be the determining element in your decision to work with a particular supplier.

What are your plans for funding your new venture? You could take out a bank loan, find an investor who believes in your product, enlist the aid of friends and family, or turn to Kickstarter for seed money.

To persuade consumers to invest in your product, you’ll need a compelling business strategy, thus a strong unique selling proposition (USP) is critical.

To put it another way, what distinguishes your range from the rest of the hair care products on the market?

Mark to have a clear action plan on these necessary points.

Research Products You Want To Create

You might consider the types of things you’d like to manufacture now that you know your target market & action plan.

For example, if you were to establish a haircare line, then it’s better to concentrate on natural and organic ingredients.

You’ll almost certainly need to find a wholesaler if you want to make products utilising chemicals.

You can still find a wholesaler if you decide to produce organic products, but you’ll almost always be able to eliminate production and make the items yourself. As previously said, when selling things, it is critical to understand your niche.

If you want to concentrate on reducing frizz, do so. Are you concentrating on reducing dryness? That’s what you should aim towards. Before extending your hair care line, it’s critical to have a speciality that you’re renowned for.

Test Your New Hair Products Before Selling

You’ll need to test your products before you start promoting them to paying customers.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on testing as other hair product companies do.

Check to see if your sample products pass the sight and smell test when you receive them from your supplier. If something doesn’t appear or smell like what you expected, you may need to speak with the source. If everything appears to be in order, it’s time to begin testing!

When it comes to your items, this is essential. You won’t know how people will react unless you test your products before you start selling them.

Naturally, if you know what components are in your items, the reactions should be minimal. Haircare products, on the other hand, don’t always work for everyone.

When promoting your products, keep this in mind, and be open about everything in your hair care range. Check the FDA’s regulations first. If you do not follow FDA requirements, you may face severe consequences.

Price Your Haircare Products

If you want to find a distributor, you must price your products correctly.

You should look at the prices of various hair care products. After you’ve checked their prices, find out how well they’re doing and whether or not customers trust them.

You can set your pricing for your goods, but if you want people to buy them, you must be reasonable. When it comes to price, it’s critical to consider your target audience.

Regardless of your price, you will be more successful if you have a trusting audience.

Your customers may not consider your goods to be good value if you overprice them.

On the other hand, charging too little may cause customers to see it as low-cost and thus of lower quality. Both alternatives have the potential to harm your business’s reputation and bottom line.

Do Your Marketing Right (Hair Product Marketing)

When it comes to launching a haircare business, the final step is to focus on marketing.

Your brand’s long-term viability depends on marketing. You risk losing your audience, which is crucial to your success if you do not market properly.

Social media marketing, influencer marketing, and in-store presentation are some of the most important marketing tools you have.

Consider how you want to convey your brand and start there.

Consider how you can identify influencers who best represent your brand the best.

Marketing is influenced by a variety of things, so do your homework before diving in.

Get Your Legal In Order

The legality of your company will be the most critical aspect to consider. If you have a designated specialist to consult with, the legal aspect is usually straightforward.

Obtain the services of an accountant or a business consultant and follow their instructions.

You risk being penalised for behaviours such as tax evasion if you don’t pay attention to these details.

Even if it isn’t purposeful, it has the potential to deplete your entire firm. Make sure you’ve covered all of the necessary bases.

How to Start a Hair Growth Oil Business in 14 Steps (In-Depth Guide)

The global hair oil market has seen intense growth over the past few years. With a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.27% from 2023 to 2028, the market could reach $4.38 billion by 2028.

natural hair products business plan

Hair growth oil is formulated with potent natural ingredients like castor oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, and various essential oils. For entrepreneurs interested in launching a hair growth oil brand, now is an opportune time. Through this guide, we’ll discuss how to start a hair growth oil business. Topics include market research on herbal hair oil, competitive analysis of the hair oil market, sourcing herbal hair oils, and more.

1. Conduct Hair Growth Oil Market Research

Market research is important for hair growth oil businesses. Market research comes in two forms, primary and secondary. Both are important to find the target market, source equipment and products like light hair oil, cooling hair oil, and ingredients for making herbal hair oils, and develop a business plan.

natural hair products business plan

Some of the information you’ll find through market research includes:

  • Driving this growth is rising consumer interest in natural, botanical solutions for hair health and treatment.
  • With over 50 million men and 30 million women experiencing hair thinning by age 50, demand is significant.
  • Castor oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, and various essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, and thyme are popular natural ingredients in hair growth oils. Hair bonnets can also be used to enhance the effect of these oils.
  • Formulating an effective proprietary blend allows entrepreneurs to meet consumer demand while standing out in a crowded market.
  • Specialty formulas like organic, cold-pressed, or focused on hair types also present an opportunity.
  • In terms of branding and marketing, compelling origin stories and transparent sustainability practices appeal to hair oil buyers.
  • Clean beauty and conscious consumerism are increasingly important.
  • Shared values around ethical sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, charitable initiatives, and inclusion further enable brands to foster loyal customers.
  • Based on these insights, the ideal target demographic for a new hair growth oil brand is health-conscious women aged 25-44 seeking natural solutions for hair thinning and loss.

With strategic branding, quality formulation, and savvy digital marketing, the possibilities are substantial for entrepreneurs breaking into this fast-growing niche. The investment required depends on factors like manufacturing, packaging, ingredients, certifications, and distribution.

2. Analyze the Competition

Thoroughly analyzing the competition is crucial when launching a new hair growth oil. This enables you to identify key players, product offerings, pricing, and positioning in the market.

natural hair products business plan

For brick-and-mortar competitors, locate hair growth oils sold locally in drug stores, natural grocery stores, salons, and beauty supply shops . Some ways to investigate the other hair oil growth businesses in the area include:

  • Note product details like ingredients, claims, packaging, and pricing.
  • Observe in-store branding, shelf placement, promotions, etc.
  • Evaluate e-commerce competition by searching for hair growth oils on platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.
  • Analyze customer reviews and ratings, pricing, shipping costs, product imagery, and branding.
  • Sign up for competitor email lists to learn about their promotions and launches.
  • Use tools like SEMrush to analyze competitors’ SEO and digital strategy.
  • Assess their website traffic, top pages, keywords, backlinks, and social media presence.
  • Learn how they attract visitors online to inform your strategy.
  • Set up Google News and Google Alerts for key terms like “hair growth oil” and competitor brand names.
  • This surfaces media coverage, reviews, and discussions to stay on top of the niche.
  • Track product releases, controversies, or changes for various brands.
  • Following key hair growth oil influencers, bloggers, and affiliated hashtags on Instagram also provides intel.
  • Notice how they discuss, feature, and promote certain products.

Conducting thorough competitor research identifies areas of differentiation and growth for your hair oil brand. It also prevents duplicating efforts while enabling you to improve upon what’s working for top brands already. Analyze often to keep up with this dynamic market.

3. Costs to Start a Hair Growth Oil Business

When launching a hair growth oil brand, there are various start-up and ongoing costs to consider.

natural hair products business plan

Start-Up Costs

  • Product Formulation & Testing: Developing an effective proprietary hair oil formula with natural ingredients will require extensive R&D Expect to invest around $5,000-$10,000 on initial formulation and stability testing.
  • Ingredients & Packaging: Ingredients like castor oil, essential oils, dropper bottles, and labels will be an upfront cost. Budget $2,000-$5,000 depending on order quantities and materials.
  • Permits & Licensing: Registering your business, applying for an EIN, and obtaining required licenses/permits can cost around $500-$1,500 depending on your location. Some states require cosmetics licenses.
  • Website & Branding: A professionally designed brand identity and website helps establish credibility. Budget $3,000-$5,000 for logo design, copywriting, site hosting, etc.
  • Professional Services: Lawyers and accountants can help navigate legal compliance, trademarks, accounting, etc. Allow $2,000-$5,000.
  • Inventory: Producing an initial inventory batch will be significant, often $5,000-$10,000 for 1,000-5,000 units. Start small and reinvest revenue.
  • Equipment: Basic equipment like mixers, funnels, scales, and lab ware will be needed. Estimate $1,000-$3,000 depending on production scale.
  • Office & Warehouse Space: A small office and product warehouse space may cost $2,000-$4,000 per month. Remote work can lower costs initially.
  • Salaries: Staff like product developers, marketers, and assistants can amplify growth but add $8,000-$15,000 in monthly payroll expenses.

Ongoing Costs

  • Facilities: Monthly office and warehouse rentals average $2,000-$4,000 depending on the location and space required.
  • Utilities: Electricity, gas, water, waste, and high-speed internet for operations may cost $500-$1,000 per month.
  • Insurance: Product liability and business insurance often ranges from $100-$300 monthly.
  • Advertising: Google, Facebook, Instagram ads, etc. can cost $500-$5,000+ per month depending on reach and engagement goals.
  • SaaS Services: Subscriptions for email, project management, accounting, and other software average $100-$500 monthly.
  • Packaging & Ingredients: With ongoing production, raw materials like oils and packaging will likely be $5,000-$15,000 per month.
  • Credit Card Processing Fees: Payment gateway and transaction fees usually run 2-4% of sales.
  • Salaries: For a small team, estimate $8,000-$15,000 in monthly payroll. Larger staffs get more expensive.
  • Taxes: Expect to pay quarterly estimated business taxes, often totaling 20-30% of profits.
  • Maintenance & Repairs: Keeping equipment and facilities running properly may cost $500-$2,000 monthly.

Analyzing both start-up and ongoing costs allows new hair growth oil entrepreneurs to accurately project budgets, manage cash flow, and financially plan for stability and growth. While expenses can seem high, the potential sales upside in this rapidly growing market makes for a smart investment given proper execution.

4. Form a Legal Business Entity

When starting a hair growth oil business, selecting the right legal structure is key. The four main options each have pros and cons to weigh.

Sole Proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is the simplest, with pass-through taxes and full control for one owner. However, the owner has unlimited personal liability for debts and lawsuits. This exposes their assets should issues arise.

Partnership

Partnerships enable multiple owners to share control and liability risks. But partnerships can get complicated with profit-sharing percentages and decision-making. Personal assets remain vulnerable without corporate veil protections.

Corporation

A corporation provides limited liability for shareholders but involves double taxation on profits. Formal directors/officers must be appointed and extensive record-keeping is required. Access to capital can be easier with stock offerings. But for a small hair oil business, maintaining corporate formalities is often overly burdensome.

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

For most hair growth oil startups, forming a limited liability company (LLC) is the best choice. LLCs limit owners’ liability and allow pass-through taxation to avoid double taxation. Compared to corporations, LLC maintenance and paperwork are simpler with fewer recording requirements. LLCs can also easily add new members or divide profits unevenly with flexibility.

5. Register Your Business For Taxes

Once you have legally formed your hair growth oil business as an LLC, the next crucial step is obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.

An EIN acts as a social security number for your business for tax and banking purposes. It is required for opening business bank accounts, applying for licenses, hiring employees, and filing taxes properly.

As a new LLC, you can easily apply online for an EIN in minutes . The IRS EIN Assistant walks you through each step:

  • Select your LLC as the legal structure
  • Enter your LLC’s official name & physical business address
  • Select the “Hired employees” option
  • Select “Banking purposes” as your reason for applying
  • Provide your personal identifying info as the applicant
  • Print/save the confirmation page with your new EIN

The online EIN application is free and you’ll get the EIN immediately upon finishing the steps.

You’ll also need to register for state taxes to obtain a sales tax permit to collect, file, and pay sales tax in your particular state. Complete the state’s business tax registration form and submit a small fee to receive your sales tax ID number.

With an EIN and sales tax permit, you can open a business bank account, apply for any necessary licenses, and properly handle taxes and deductions for your hair growth oil LLC.

Having these registrations and IDs in place legitimizes your business and keeps you compliant as you start selling products, paying employees, and filing quarterly taxes on your earnings. It’s a quick, essential process for new entrepreneurs to complete.

6. Setup Your Accounting

As a new entrepreneur launching a hair growth oil brand, implementing organized accounting practices from the start is critical. Proper bookkeeping and financial management will save you headaches down the road with the IRS while enabling smarter business decisions using financial data.

Software Accounting

Accounting software is a big help for small businesses. Services like QuickBooks integrate with business bank/credit accounts to automate expense tracking, invoicing clients, managing payroll, and more.

Apply for a Business Credit Card and Business Bank Account

Begin by separating personal and business finances. Open a dedicated business checking account to keep all income and expenses separate. Speaking of credit, apply for a small business credit card with your EIN to further distinguish business transactions. This also builds your business credit history as your limits grow with revenue.

Hire an Accountant

While software and credit aids streamline finances, partnering with an accountant takes optimization further. A bookkeeper can reconcile accounts, provide monthly profit/loss statements, advise on business tax deductions and credits, and ensure filings are compliant. Expect to invest $100-$250 monthly for these services.

Come tax season, your accountant can compile all financial documentation and submit mandatory filings like income taxes, sales tax, and payroll tax. This expertise protects you if ever audited by the IRS. Expect to pay $500-$2,000 for annual tax prep, depending on complexity.

7. Obtain Licenses and Permits

Before selling your first bottle of hair growth oil, it is crucial to ensure your business has the proper licenses and permits. Federal licenses are available through the U.S. Small Business Administration . The SBA also offers state and city license information.

At the federal level, hair oil producers must register with the FDA and adhere to their cosmetics safety requirements. While less stringent than drug regulations, FDA guidelines still mandate detailed ingredient labeling, safety substantiation, and adverse event reporting. Expect to invest around $2,000 initially for FDA registration and compliance.

States also regulate beauty product businesses. For example, California requires a Cosmetic Registration License through its Safe Cosmetics Program for any company with over $5,000 in revenue. Texas, Louisiana, and Florida also have applicable licenses. Research requirements for your target markets.

Additionally, many states require general business licenses to legally operate. For instance, New York’s Certificate of Authority involves a $25 fee plus ongoing franchise taxes. Washington’s Business License Application costs $15-$115 depending on location and business type.

Don’t forget city and county permits that may apply to your hair oil production facility. Zoning occupancy permits, fire department permits related to chemical storage, plumbing permits for laboratory sink installation, and more may be needed locally.

The licensing and permitting process ensures your hair growth oil business meets all standards and regulations. Though cumbersome, compliance protects customers and provides legal authority to conduct business. Renewals and ongoing maintenance will be required as well.

8. Get Business Insurance

Operating a hair growth oil business without adequate insurance opens dangerous liability risks. The right coverage protects your company’s finances and assets if sued, burglarized, or disaster strikes.

For example, a disgruntled customer could claim a bad reaction from using your oil. Without liability insurance, you’d personally foot their costly medical bills. Or a fire could destroy your production facility and inventory without insurance to rebuild. Even a slip-and-fall accident on your property could lead to an expensive lawsuit alone.

Begin by evaluating risks unique to your business model and operations. This determines what coverage is necessary. Common policies include General Liability Insurance covering bodily injury/property damage claims against your business, and Product Liability Insurance protecting against product-related lawsuits. Business Interruption Insurance replaces income lost due to disasters halting operations. Commercial Property Insurance covers damage to company property and assets. There are numerous options to investigate.

Next, request quotes from various business insurance providers . Compare coverage terms, exclusions, deductibles, and premium costs. Involve any partners or investors in selecting an adequate liability limit that covers potential risks without overspending.

Expect costs from $30/month up to $150/month depending on your policy customization. Comprehensive protection provides peace of mind and financial stability if faced with hefty legal, property, or health expenses down the road. Do not neglect this step before officially launching your hair growth oil business. The risks are simply too great.

9. Create an Office Space

Having a professional office space lends legitimacy to your hair growth oil startup and provides an environment conducive to focus and productivity when handling tasks like bookkeeping, marketing, R&D, and customer service.

Home Office

A home office allows maximum convenience and the lowest costs starting. Expect to invest around $500-$2,000 on a desk, chair, computer, phone, filing cabinet, and basic office supplies to set up an efficient workspace at home. However, the distractions of home life can impede focus.

Coworking Office

Coworking spaces like WeWork provide an affordable office environment surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs. For $300-$500 per month, you can secure a semi-private workspace in a modern facility with business amenities, conference rooms, events, and networking. The community ethos boosts motivation levels.

Commercial Office

If securing venture capital funding, leasing dedicated commercial office space projects an image of stability and scale for investors. Class A spaces in prime locations start around $3,000/month for 1,000 sq. ft suites with high-end finishes and reception areas. However, costlier 5-year leases often require personal liability.

Retail Office

Retail space isn’t usually required when formulating and selling hair oils online through e-commerce. However, some brands do operate storefronts for an immersive brand experience around $3,000-$5,000 monthly.

10. Source Your Equipment

Launching a hair growth oil product line requires various materials and equipment for formulation, bottling, labeling, and shipping. Strategic sourcing keeps startup costs manageable.

When buying new, laboratory supply companies like ThermoFisher , Sigma-Aldrich , and scientific equipment provide quality beakers, mixing tanks, pipettes, and other critical labware for small-batch production. Expect to invest $1,000-$5,000 in outfitting your lab.

Buying affordable used equipment is also an option. Check industry classifieds like LabX and EquipNet for deals on used homogenizers, stirrers, funnels, measuring implements, and more, often 40-60% cheaper than new.

For raw ingredients like essential oils, castor oil, and vitamin E, bulk prices on Alibaba or from wholesalers like New Directions Aromatics maximize savings versus small bottles from health stores.

Renting small shared commercial kitchen spaces on an hourly basis also grants access to basic equipment for getting started with only a few hundred dollars per month.

11. Establish Your Brand Assets

Developing a strong brand identity helps new hair growth oil companies stand out in a crowded market and build customer recognition and loyalty.

Get a Business Phone Number

Acquiring a unique business phone number via a service like RingCentral adds legitimacy when interacting with suppliers, partners, and customers.

Design a Logo

A logo that reflects your brand story and values is also essential. Given the natural focus of hair oils, an abstract plant or herbal design often works well. Or minimalist graphics representing hair strength and nourishment. Looka’s AI logo maker provides affordable, custom options.

With a color palette and logo established, create matching business cards, product labels, websites, social assets, etc. This cohesive visual branding helps customers identify your products on shelves or online.

Print Business Cards

Business cards enable networking, credibility, and referrals. As a new hair oil entrepreneur, exchanges at trade shows, store visits, and even casual encounters establish important connections. Order professional designs from Vistaprint.

Signage like pull-up banners for your booth at events is also useful for brand awareness. Vistaprint provides one-stop shopping.

Buy a Domain Name

Staking a claim on your brand name via a .com domain solidifies your identity and discoverability online. Namecheap offers affordable registration and protection from cyber squatters. Ideally, align your domain name with your product or brand name for simplicity.

Design a Website

A website that reflects the visual brand communicates product benefits, offers purchase options, and provides helpful hair care tips is now essential for any business.

Using an intuitive website builder like Wix enables crafting a professional site yourself or delegating to skilled web developers on Fiverr for more complex functionality.

12. Join Associations and Groups

Joining relevant local and online communities provides invaluable connections, advice, and growth opportunities for new hair oil entrepreneurs.

Local Associations

Searching for “[your city] cosmetics association” can uncover groups like the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists that host educational events, networking mixers, and industry resources. Becoming a member puts you in touch with suppliers, labs, brands, and experts in your regional community.

Local Meetups

Sites like Meetup list local meetups for beauty and personal care professionals to swap insights on cosmetic trends, innovations, and best practices for things like scaling production or social media marketing. These in-person connections can yield mentorships and potential partnerships.

Attending large industry trade shows like Cosmoprof North America enables even more exposure. You can exhibit new products, connect with buyers from major retailers, learn about the latest technologies, and keep a pulse on where the market is headed.

Facebook Groups

For constant real-time intel, join targeted Facebook groups like the Cosmetic Industry Professionals group with over 5,000 industry members. Fellow hair care brand owners share everything from labeling questions to PR strategies in these online communities.

13. How to Market a Hair Growth Oil Business

Implementing marketing initiatives is crucial for getting the word out about your new hair care brand and attracting customers. Leveraging both digital and traditional strategies will be key.

natural hair products business plan

Personal Network

Start by tapping into your personal and professional network. Provide free samples to friends, family, and colleagues and ask for honest feedback and reviews. Offer referral rewards like discounts to motivate happy customers to endorse your oils on social media and tell their circles. Word of mouth is invaluable early on.

Digital Marketing

Digital tactics should be at the core of your marketing strategy to connect with today’s e-commerce consumers.

Effective digital marketing ideas include:

  • Google Ads to get your products displayed in search results
  • Facebook/Instagram ads targeted locally and to beauty consumers
  • Create engaging video content on YouTube and TikTok to demonstrate products
  • Start an email list to send promotions and build relationships
  • Run giveaways and contests to generate buzz and user-generated content
  • Post tutorials and blogs about hair care tips on your website
  • Optimize SEO with relevant keywords so people can discover you organically
  • Build relationships with influencers to collaborate on sponsored content

Traditional Marketing

When resources allow, limited traditional marketing could also help expose the brand:

  • Print flyers to distribute at local salons, fairs, conferences, etc.
  • Take out ads in beauty and hair magazines targeted to your audience
  • Sponsor community events related to hair care and health
  • Run radio ads on popular stations among your target demographics
  • Use billboards and benches near salons or in high-traffic areas

While digital tactics perform best for e-commerce brands today, traditional marketing can supplement when trying to penetrate specific local markets. But focus efforts where you can accurately measure ROI.

14. Focus on the Customer

Providing exceptional customer service needs to be a priority when starting a hair growth oil company to foster loyalty, referrals, and long-term growth. Some ways to improve customer focus for your hair growth oil business include:

  • With a new brand trying to break through in a crowded market, each customer interaction represents an opportunity to create a passionate brand advocate.
  • Things like prompt shipping, friendly email exchanges, and truly listening to feedback signal to customers that you genuinely care.
  • Conversely, negative experiences where a customer receives an incorrect order or damaging radio silence in response to inquiries mean you lose their business forever.
  • Word of mouth remains a powerful driver of awareness and sales.
  • Providing white-glove service demonstrates your commitment to the health of your customers’ hair and your products’ performance.

So be sure to invest in sufficient staffing, clear policies, and training to deliver consistent, thoughtful support. The ROI from customer service will be game-changing.

A Complete Guide to Natural Hair Products

Updated on 24 February 2023

article featured image

Hair is big business in South Africa. While there are all kinds of hair salons and retailers that exist in the country, one of the biggest areas to focus a hair business on is natural hair. Natural hair products are becoming increasingly popular, and starting a business selling natural hair products could be a great way to enter the popular hair market.

In South Africa, where afro-textured hair is most common, selling natural hair products makes sense. In this guide, we’ll cover what natural hair products are, why they’re a great idea, and what to consider if you start a business around natural hair products.

What are Natural Hair Products?

Natural hair refers to maintaining your head of hair without using any chemical straighteners, relaxers, or texturizers. It’s a way of maintaining afro-textured hair in its unaltered state, without altering hair to conform to Eurocentric hair and beauty standards. Natural hair is all about encouraging African people to embrace their natural afro-textured hair and curls.

This means natural hair products are any hair products designed to maintain this natural hairstyle. Natural hair products contain ingredients that won’t perm, dry, relax, or chemically alter the hair in any way.

As the name suggests, natural hair products are often made from more natural ingredients – avoiding any harsh chemicals that will alter your hair. These products are generally focused on maintaining moisture and cleanliness in hair, without changing the way the hair naturally grows.

Why are Natural Hair Products a Good Idea?

Natural hair products celebrate afro-textured hair for what it really is. For many years, African people with this type of hair have used different products and methods to try to straighten and flatten out their hair. Natural hair is all about embracing hair in its natural state.

Beyond this, it’s a healthier way to take care of your hair. Natural hair products don’t contain chemicals that weaken the hair or make it more prone to breakage. Relaxers contain strong chemicals that could damage the structure of your hair or even burn your scalp.

So using natural hair products is a great way to make people feel better about themselves, while also promoting healthier hair habits.

Selling Natural Hair Products

There is an enormous market available for natural hair products – a market that is still largely untapped. In South Africa, people are willing to spend a lot of money on their hair. It’s a top priority for many. By taking advantage of the rising popularity of natural hair, there is major potential to build a successful natural hair product business.

This starts by having a great product. You could either try to develop natural hair products yourself or use a wholesale supplier. Whatever the case, ensure you have a quality product that meets all of the right natural hair requirements.

Then understand the market and establish how your business will fit into this. While there is a lot of potential for hair products, it’s also a highly competitive market. It’s important that your natural hair business comes with a strong unique selling proposition (USP), and that you understand who your target audience is and why they would be interested in your products.

Establish a clear business plan that outlines how your business will start and operate, what operational requirements your natural hair business has, how you will market the business, what your finances will look like, and so on.

Natural Hair Styles

With natural hair comes the ability to enjoy a range of different hairstyles. These include braids, twists, afros, and Bantu knots. Without any chemicals or straighteners in your hair, these styles work particularly well.

If you plan to establish a business around natural hair products, it could also be worthwhile looking into natural hair styling. The two areas are closely related and offer lucrative opportunities for small businesses.

There is an enormous market available for natural hair products, making this a great area to start a business in. There is also a lot of room to start a small, local business selling natural hair products, with the opportunity to expand into the larger market.

People will always place a lot of value in caring for their hair, and using the right natural hair products is the best way to do this. Focusing on natural hair products and styles is only growing in popularity. So, if you’re interested in hair, this can be a great area for starting a business.

How to draft a great business plan for your hair salon business?

A good business plan for a hair salon must reflect the unique aspects of the beauty industry and the personalized services offered by salons.

To start, it is crucial to provide a comprehensive overview of the beauty market. This includes current statistics and identifying emerging trends in the industry, as illustrated in our hair salon business plan template .

Your business plan should articulate your vision clearly. Define your target clientele (e.g., neighborhood residents, professionals, students), and establish the distinctive positioning of your hair salon (upscale, budget-friendly, specializing in certain hair treatments or styles).

Market analysis is a key component. This requires a thorough understanding of local competitors, industry trends, and customer demands and expectations.

For a hair salon, particular emphasis should be placed on the services you intend to offer. Describe your range of services - haircuts, coloring, styling, treatments - and discuss how they cater to the preferences and needs of your target market.

The operational plan is vital. It should outline the location of your salon, the design of the service area, supplier relationships for products and equipment, and the service delivery process.

In a hair salon business plan, it is important to highlight the expertise of your stylists, the quality of hair care products used, and adherence to health and safety standards.

Then, delve into your marketing and sales strategy. How do you plan to attract new clients and keep them coming back? Consider promotional tactics, customer loyalty programs, and potential additional services (like selling hair care products or offering beauty treatments).

Implementing digital strategies, such as a professional website or an active social media presence, is increasingly important for customer engagement and retention.

The financial section is another critical element. This should include your startup costs, revenue projections, ongoing expenses, and the point at which you expect to break even.

In the hair salon business, service pricing can vary widely, so it's essential to have a detailed financial plan and a solid understanding of your cost structure. For assistance, refer to our financial forecast for a hair salon .

Compared to other business plans, a hair salon's plan must pay special attention to factors such as the stylist recruitment and training, the customer experience, appointment scheduling systems, and the potential for product sales.

A well-crafted business plan will not only help you clarify your strategy and vision but also attract investors or secure loans.

Lenders and investors are looking for comprehensive market analysis, realistic financial projections, and a clear plan for the day-to-day operations of the salon.

By presenting a thorough and substantiated plan, you showcase your professionalism and dedication to the success of your hair salon.

To achieve these goals while saving time, you can complete our hair salon business plan template .

The Financial Plan

Of course, the text presented below is far from sufficient to serve as a solid and credible financial analysis for a bank or potential investor. They expect specific numbers, financial statements, and charts demonstrating the profitability of your project.

All these elements are available in our business plan template for a hair salon and our financial plan for a hair salon .

Initial expenses for our hair salon include the cost of leasing and renovating a suitable space, purchasing salon equipment such as chairs, styling stations, wash basins, and hairdressing tools, as well as investing in high-quality hair care products. We will also allocate funds for obtaining necessary licenses, insurance, and staff training to ensure top-notch services. Additionally, expenses will cover brand development and marketing strategies to establish our presence in the local market.

Our revenue assumptions are based on a thorough market analysis of the local demand for hair care services, taking into account factors such as population demographics, competition, and current beauty trends.

We expect a steady increase in clientele, beginning with a conservative estimate and expanding as our salon's reputation for excellence and customer satisfaction grows.

The projected income statement outlines expected revenues from hair care services and product sales, direct costs of services (such as hair care products and stylist wages), and operating expenses (rent, utilities, marketing, administrative salaries, etc.).

This results in a forecasted net profit that is essential for assessing the long-term viability of our hair salon.

The projected balance sheet will display assets unique to our salon, including salon equipment, product inventory, and any improvements made to the leased space, as well as liabilities such as loans and accounts payable.

It will provide a snapshot of the financial condition of our hair salon at the end of each fiscal period.

Our projected cash flow statement will detail the inflows and outflows of cash, enabling us to predict our financial needs. This is crucial for maintaining a healthy cash balance to support daily operations and growth initiatives.

The projected financing plan will outline the sources of funding we intend to tap into to cover our initial costs, such as personal savings, bank loans, or investor capital.

We will closely monitor the working capital requirement to ensure we have sufficient funds to manage day-to-day activities, including stocking salon products, managing inventory, and paying staff salaries.

The break-even analysis will determine the level of sales we need to achieve to cover all our costs, including initial investments, and begin generating a profit.

It will signal the point at which our hair salon becomes financially sustainable.

Key performance indicators we will track include the average revenue per customer, the customer retention rate, the gross margin on services and products, and the return on investment to gauge the efficiency of the capital we have invested in our salon.

These metrics will assist us in measuring the financial performance and overall success of our hair salon.

How To Start A Hair Product Line While Still Running A Busy Hair Salon —A Step By Step Guide

Natalia Gonzalez

minute read

As a salon owner , you have the unique opportunity to offer your clients not just top-notch services, but also high-quality products that they can use at home to maintain their hair. Developing your hair product line can be a rewarding way to expand your business and create an additional revenue stream . However, it's important to proceed with caution and a strategic plan in place. With so many established brands on the market, it can be challenging to stand out and gain a loyal following. Additionally, a poorly executed product line could harm your reputation and leave your clients disappointed.

Fortunately, Booksy is here to help. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the steps of launching your hair product line, from developing a unique brand to identifying your target audience and finding the right supplier. With our expert guidance, you can confidently create a successful product line that complements your salon business and delights your clients. So, let's dive in!

Step 1: Understand the pros & cons of starting a hair product line

Running a successful salon business is tough enough. But introducing a hair product line is even more challenging. That’s why it’s important to do the groundwork i.e know the pros and cons of launching a product line as the first and foremost step.

The pros and cons listed below will help you identify if investing in one is worthy enough.

natural hair products business plan

  • Work from home : You don’t need a physical store or office space to sell your hair product line. You don’t even need a warehouse to store your inventory (we’ll get to that later). You can put as much or as little time into your business as you like, depending on your life circumstances and your goals.
  • Alternative income stream : If your salon is having to cancel appointments or can accommodate only a limited number of clients at any given time, a hair product line will keep the money flowing in.
  • Low startup cost : You could spend as little as $2,500 for your initial batch of orders. If you’re going solo, you’ll also save on labor costs until your business grows enough to justify hiring someone to help you out.3
  • Lots of competition : Haircare is a very crowded space, so you need to identify a key market you want to focus on, get to know what people want, and deliver exactly what they demand.
  • Reliance upon a supplier : Most hair care businesses don’t physically make their products. Instead, they engage with a supplier to manufacture the product line according to their specifications. You’ll need to choose the right supplier as you will be reliant upon them.
  • Time investment: Marketing a successful hair product line means you’ll have to put in a lot of work into promoting your products, providing great client service, and communicating with vendors and employees. But if you’re confident you can do it, you need to start planning.

Seems like something you’d want to do? Let’s look at the next steps.

Step 2: Create a plan of action

Since you will be managing two projects – a salon and a hair product line – you will need to be deliberate and strategic about it. Take the time to learn how other brands have done it. In this section, we’ll look at the steps you need to take to get started.

First, you’ll need to look at the costs you will incur . This will depend on some factors. Here are some things you will have to budget for as you market a hair product line:

  • Licenses and business formation : Depending on your location, you might need to register your product with the appropriate office (such as the FDA), then pay for the cost of business licensing and other applicable taxes.
  • Payment processing : While your salon probably has a payment processing system of some sort, you will need a separate payment processing system for online transactions.
  • Payroll: While you might be able to handle launching the product line and processing the initial orders yourself, you may eventually need to hire someone to help you.
  • Liability insurance: It’s always smart to have liability insurance in case a client files a complaint against your product. Costs range from $500 to around $2000 per year. In some locations, liability insurance is legally required.
  • Website: Operating an online business is different from selling hair products out of your salon . If you want to look like a credible seller, you will need to get your domain name. You should also create a new Gmail account specifically for this side of the business—one that’s separate from your current website.
  • Inventory: Your supplier might require you to purchase a certain amount of product upfront. The initial inventory cost might be the key deciding factor that sways you toward a specific supplier.

How are you going to fund your new project? You could secure a loan from a bank, find an investor who believes in your product, ask friends and family for help, or go to Kickstarter for initial funding. You will need a compelling business model to get people to invest in your product, so a good unique selling proposition (USP ) is very important. In other words, what makes your line different from all the other hair care products out there?

Step 3: Choose the hair products you’ll sell

Knowing which products you’ll sell is the next step. It might be tempting to say “everything!”, but we recommend starting small. Focus on just a few products that are highly in demand. Once the profits start rolling in, you can gradually expand your business .

The first step is knowing your target demographic. Different kinds of people have different kinds of hair, and you cannot appeal to everyone. You could start by observing the people who come into your salon. What treatments are they asking for most often? What demographic groups do they fall into?

You might wish to create a product line that will be useful to people with a specific kind of hair, such as curly, thin, or straight hair. You might choose to cater to a particular demographic, such as older women or college students on a budget. When you understand your target market , you can work out the kinds of products that would appeal to them.

Step 4: Decide between getting a supplier or producing in-house

Some companies produce their hair products using their equipment. However, this takes a lot of capital for equipment and research and development costs. It also requires a lot of specialist scientific knowledge that most people don’t have (or the budget to hire those who do!).

For a small business like yours, it’s best to work with a supplier . This means that you partner with a manufacturer, give them your specifications, and they’ll produce the products for you. Your name and branding will be on the products. This is sometimes called a private label.

Many suppliers require you to order a certain amount of product upfront. If you find that the product doesn’t live up to your expectations, you might end up with a surplus of inventory that you won’t ever sell.  Therefore, do your research . Ask around for supplier referrals. The hair salon industry is a tightly-knit one, especially for small, independent salons, and fellow salon owners will be happy to share the suppliers they love. So don’t be afraid to ask someone who’s been in the business longer!

You can also read online reviews, and ask for sample products before you make a decision.

Step 5: Receive the products & test them

Before you start marketing your products to paying clients, you’ll need to test them first . While some hair product brands spend thousands of dollars on testing, you don’t need to do that.

When you receive your sample products from your supplier, check whether they pass the sight and scent test. If something looks and smells different from what you expected, you might need to have a word with the supplier. If everything seems fine, it’s time to start testing!

Before you test it on other people, try it out yourself . After all, you wouldn’t sell something you wouldn’t use, right? If it leaves your hair dry or your scalp itchy, or it doesn’t lather and rinse very well, you might need your supplier to reformulate the product.

If it passes your quality control, it’s time to start asking your team members and loyal clients to try it out and give you their feedback .

Make sure you test your product on different kinds of hair to see if they have the desired effect for your target audience. Once you and your clients are satisfied with the performance of your product, it’s time to bring it to the market!

Try Booksy for Free

Step 6: Create your branding, website, and domain

A huge part of starting your hair product line is learning how to promote it . Many of your sales will likely come from online clients. You will need to pick the right brand name, build your website, choose your domain name, and do SEO on your site to make it easily searchable—something that you’ve most likely been doing for your hair salon business too.

First, you need to think of a catchy name for your hair product line. If you’ve already given your salon a name, you could use that. Otherwise, here are some pointers to help you:

  • Avoid names that are hard to spell.
  • Do a quick Google search for a potential brand name. If your brand name is taken or sounds like another company, choose something else.
  • Try to avoid anything that boxes you into just one niche, in case you decide to branch out later

Make a shortlist of possible names, and do some market research to see what your prospective clients think. Once you’ve chosen a name, grab the domain name straight away. Register the handles on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, too.

You can also list your products on your Booksy profile as well, so customers can see and add them to their service once they are done with their appointment. This feature can help increase your product sales and create an easier experience for your clients.

Additionally, you can build an e-commerce website using Shopify or an alternative platform . However, if you choose to use WooCommerce instead, you’ll need to have a WordPress website. For that, you’ll need to get WordPress hosting from a reliable hosting provider and then install WooCommerce on it. You will also need images of your product packaging, marketing copy for your product pages, and a short introduction to your salon and hair product line. In fact, with a recent boom in e-commerce social selling has become key too. Test out platforms like Facebook Shops or sell via Instagram Shops.

You might also wish to create a newsletter where subscribers can receive hair care tips, special offers, and the latest updates from your business. Use a landing page builder to create a great-looking landing page where website visitors can subscribe to your newsletter.

Finally, you’ll need to work on the SEO for your e-commerce website. SEO is a long game and cannot be accomplished overnight. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Create a blog within your site and post regularly, using relevant keywords
  • Add alt text to your images, describing their content, and using your chosen keywords.
  • Use a plugin like Yoast SEO to help you

Pro tip: people love to support local businesses. When you choose your keywords and start writing SEO-optimized content for your site, don’t forget to target local keywords. client reviews are also hugely helpful for local SEO.

Step 7: Pricing your products & calculating expected income

One of the most critical tasks you have to do as you start your hair product line is deciding how much your products will cost . Both overpricing and underpricing your product could have serious negative effects on your business.

If you overprice your product , your clients may not see it as good value. On the other hand, charging too little might lead to clients viewing it as cheap and therefore of lower quality. Both options can be damaging to your reputation and bottom line.

When you price your products, you need to understand your target clients. You’ll need to know their age, buying habits, location, and price sensitivity. An affluent middle-aged person is likely to be willing to spend more on hair care than a college student.

You will also need to identify the costs you incur as you produce and market your product, ensuring you keep a healthy profit margin .

You also need to understand your revenue goals by calculating your break-even cost and estimated sales for the first few months. These factors together will help you identify your pricing sweet spot.

You can see if your pricing is competitive by comparing your product line with your competitors’ similar products. How much do they charge? If your price point is very different, you might need to reassess.

Step 8: Growing your hair product line with your salon

Your salon clients make the best target market for your hair product line since you already know what they want and look for in their hair care. If you already own a salon, your stylists will play a crucial role in educating your clients about your products and their benefits. For example, they can use your shampoo to wash clients’ hair, allowing the client to see how high quality it is.

Your professional stylists are well-positioned to promote your brand because they know their clients’ needs intimately. They will be able to make customized recommendations , leading to loyal clients who keep coming back again and again.

Along with nurturing relationships with your salon clients, you can also build a community online . The simplest way of building an online community is creating an exclusive Facebook group . You can post hair care tips, encourage discussions between members, feature some of your most loyal clients looking stunning after visiting your salon, and run surveys and market research to inform future product launches and marketing campaigns.

As your clients get to know more about their hair and what it needs to stay healthy, you have the opportunity to introduce more products and build your influence in the market.

Starting a hair product line along with your salon allows you to expand your business beyond the local market and gives you an additional source of revenue.

When you run both a salon and a hair product line, you need to make sure you can dedicate sufficient time and energy to both (or else hire someone to help you). While a hair product line is an exciting opportunity, you will need to ensure it is financially viable and that you have a strong USP. You will also need to find the right supplier for your products, assuming you don’t intend to physically make them in-house.

Before launching your product line, it's essential to have a strong understanding of your target audience and competition. This will help you design, promote, and price your products accordingly. To effectively promote your hair product line, you can leverage your salon as a primary tool by educating your stylists on how the products can meet your clients' hair care needs. And with the Booksy app , you can take things to the next level by listing your products on your Booksy profile. This allows your customers to easily see and add your products to their service once they're done with their appointment.

So, start expanding your business with confidence, but make sure you have a strong USP and a viable financial plan for your product line.

II. Products & Services

Problem worth solving.

The natural hair care market has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by increased consumer awareness and demand for chemical-free, sustainable hair products. However, many consumers, particularly those with curly, coily, and textured hair types, continue to face a critical gap in the market. The vast majority of hair care products available do not cater to the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with diverse hair textures .

Consumers with curly, coily, and textured hair often struggle to find effective, natural solutions that address their specific hair care concerns, such as:

  • Moisture retention and hydration: Curly and coily hair types are inherently drier and more prone to breakage, requiring specialized formulations to lock in moisture and maintain healthy hair.
  • Frizz and manageability: Textured hair can be challenging to style and control, leading to frustration and a lack of confidence in personal appearance.
  • Hair growth and scalp health: Traditional hair care products may contain harsh chemicals that can damage the hair and irritate the scalp, hindering hair growth and overall hair and scalp condition.

Furthermore, the natural hair care market is saturated with products that contain synthetic ingredients, parabens, sulfates, and other harmful additives. These chemical-laden formulations not only fail to address the needs of diverse hair types but can also have adverse effects on the health and well-being of consumers .

Consequently, many individuals with curly, coily, and textured hair are forced to either compromise on the quality and safety of their hair care products or invest significant time and resources in searching for suitable, natural alternatives. This problem greatly impacts their confidence, hair health, and overall quality of life.

  • Our Nourishing Shampoo and Hydrating Conditioner are formulated with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe vera to gently cleanse and deeply condition hair, promoting moisture retention and healthy growth.
  • The Curl-Enhancing Styling Gel and Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner are designed to define and maintain curls and coils, while providing the necessary moisture and protection for textured hair types.
  • Our Scalp-Revitalizing Treatment and Hair Strengthening Serum address common hair and scalp concerns, such as dryness, flakiness, and breakage, using natural ingredients like rosemary, tea tree oil, and biotin.

In addition to our high-performing hair care solutions, EcoLocks Naturals aims to be a trusted resource for our customers by providing comprehensive educational content on our website and social media channels. Looking for a free,  downloadable hair and beauty salon sample business plan Word doc  or  PDF  to help you create a business plan of your own? Bplans has you covered.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to find a sample business plan that exactly matches your business. Whether you’re launching an upscale, full-service salon in a bustling city or a neighborhood barbershop, the details will be different, but the bones of the plan will be the same.

Are you writing a business plan for your salon because you’re seeking a loan? Is your primary concern building a clear roadmap for growth? Either way, you’re going to want to edit and customize it so it fits your particular company.

No two salons are alike. Your business model will be different if you’re renting space to independent hairstylists, rather than taking on employees, for example. So take the time to create your own financial forecasts and do enough market research so you have a solid plan for success.

  • What should you include in a hair and beauty salon business plan?

Your hair and beauty salon business plan doesn’t need to be hundreds of pages—keep it as short and concise as you can. You’ll probably want to include each of these sections:

  • Executive summary
  • Company summary and funding needs
  • Products and services
  • Marketing plan
  • Management team
  • Financial plan

One of the things that makes a salon business plan different from some service-based business plans is that you might decide to offer a combination of products and services.

Maybe you’ll sell shampoo, beard oil, or other cosmetics and beauty products, in addition to offering services like haircuts, manicures, or massages. If that’s the case, make sure you include your ideas for upselling products to customers to increase the value of every appointment you book.

Here’s an example of a salon business plan outline.

  • The 7 elements of an effective hair and beauty salon business plan

1. Executive Summary

The  executive summary  provides a high-level overview of your business plan. It should outline the objectives of your hair and beauty salon, such as to offer high-quality services, to expand the client base, or to break into a new market.

Your salon’s mission statement should describe its purpose and what sets it apart from competitors. For example, you may aim to offer a personalized experience for each customer or provide eco-friendly hair and beauty services.

The keys to success are the factors that will help your salon thrive. These may include a prime location, hiring experienced staff, excellent customer service, or a unique product and service range.

2. Company Summary and Funding Needs

The company summary offers a detailed overview of your salon, including its legal structure , location, and history. Also, it highlights your salon’s funding needs if you are seeking financial support.

Clearly state how much funding you need, what you will use it for, and how it will benefit the salon. For instance, you may need funds to renovate the premises, purchase equipment, or boost marketing efforts.

3. Salon Products and Services

This section should detail the products and services your hair or beauty salon will offer. These may include haircuts, hair treatments, manicures, pedicures, massages, and beauty treatments.

If you plan to retail beauty products such as shampoos, conditioners, or skin care items, include this information too. Highlight any unique services or products that differentiate your salon from competitors.

4. Salon Marketing Plan and Analysis

Your marketing plan should outline the strategies you will use to attract and retain customers. These strategies might include social media advertising, loyalty programs, partnerships with local businesses, and special promotions.

Additionally, you should conduct a thorough market analysis. Understand your target customers, their preferences, and their spending habits. Identify your competitors, their strengths and weaknesses, and how you can differentiate your salon.

5. Salon Management Team

The management team section provides information about the salon’s key personnel. This could include the salon owner, managers, stylists, beauticians, and other staff members. Highlight their roles, responsibilities, qualifications, and experience.

If you plan to rent chairs to independent stylists rather than hiring employees, describe how this arrangement will work and the advantages it offers for your business.

6. Financial Plan and Forecasts

Your financial plan should present detailed financial projections, including revenue, costs, and profitability. Include a cash flow statement, income statement, and balance sheet. This section should clearly demonstrate the salon’s potential profitability and financial viability.

Also, outline your pricing strategy. How have you priced your services and products, and how do these prices compare with competitors? What are your wage costs, and how will they affect your profitability?

7. Appendix

The appendix includes any additional supporting documents that complement your business plan. This might be market research data, lease agreements, employee contracts, or licensing and permit documents.

While not always necessary, the appendix can provide valuable context and proof to support your business plan’s content.

  • Crafting a Successful Salon Business Plan: Key Considerations

Understanding your target clientele’s needs is crucial to writing a hair or beauty salon business plan that you can put into action. To ensure your business plan is the foundation of a growing operation rather than just checking boxes, ask yourself whether you’re taking these considerations into account.

1. Comprehensive Services Offering

In the beauty industry, customer preferences vary significantly, and staying versatile in your offerings can help cater to a broader clientele. Include a wide range of services that cater to different demographics. You may also consider offering unique or specialized services that distinguish your salon from others.

2. Pricing Strategy

Pricing can make or break your salon. Competitive pricing attracts customers, but your pricing should also cover your costs and ensure profitability. Effective market research can help you understand the average cost of services in your area, which you can use to set your prices competitively.

3. Salon Atmosphere

The ambiance of a salon plays a significant role in attracting and retaining customers. Consider factors like décor, cleanliness, and customer service when planning your salon.

4. Staff Training and Expertise

Quality service is crucial in the hair and beauty industry since word-of-mouth exposure from existing clients is a major driver of new business. Investing in ongoing staff training ensures that your team stays updated with the latest trends, techniques, and customer service skills.

5. Digital Presence

Although word of mouth is one business driver, many of today’s customers research online before visiting a salon. Having a strong online presence, including a well-designed website, effective search engine optimization and active social media accounts, can significantly boost your business.

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Black-owned businesses are not a monolith, nor are hair care brands catering to natural hair.

For Black women everywhere, hair care is reminiscent of a sacred activity. There is an obsessive but warranted need for the perfect combination of products to create the perfect style . However, the strategy that comes with learning what natural hair needs varies by person, and the journey can be very costly.

According to market research on the Black Hair Care Market, Black women “spend more time and money on hairstyles and hair care products compared to women of other ethnicities.” In 2022, the Black hair care market was worth $2.9 billion and is expected to increase to $4.5 billion by 2032.

Pioneers in the natural hair care industry , such as Cantu, Shea Moisture, and Miss Jessie’s, set a standard for how brands should cater to the beauty of Black women. When formally Black-owned companies, like Cantu, decide to sell, it creates a rift between the Black woman consumer and the brand.

When Mielle Organics joined P&G Beauty , it caused an uproar in the Black beauty community. Founder Monique Rodriguez released a statement saying there were no plans to change formulas but to better meet the needs of their increased demands.

Although selling, whether for the benefit of the company or its founders, isn’t enough to keep Black women from trying new products, it does signal a need to invest in upcoming Black-owned hair care brands that are looking to usher in a new sustainable era in the Black beauty industry.

NaturallyCurly spoke with six budding Black-owned beauty brand owners about the biggest lessons they’ve learned throughout their entrepreneurship journey. Here’s what they had to say:

1. AfroUnicorn

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

As a person who is championed for their entrepreneurial spirit, what tips would you give another hair care line-owner on expanding their brand while maintaining their core values of catering to Black women with natural hair?

April Showers, the founder and CEO of Afro Unicorn , was inspired to start the brand after a friend called her a “unicorn” for her ability to balance her multifaceted and demanding life. She also noticed that her favorite emoji, the unicorn, was only available in white and lacked representation.

Showers wanted to create a more inclusive brand for children of color to celebrate their uniqueness, divinity, and magic. When children use Afro Unicorn Magical Tresses , I want them to feel like they’re putting on the power of their unicorn mane. You can’t say anything about my hair because it smells good and it looks good. Our hair care collection celebrates individuality, curated out of love and respect for every unique hair texture.

What advice would you give another business owner who is trying to crowdsource and earn grants to jump-start their business?

My advice would be to focus on four key areas: a strong brand story, a great product, a capable team, and demonstrable traction in your market. When crowd-sourcing or applying for grants, it’s important to communicate these elements to show potential supporters why your business is worth backing. Additionally, research to find funding opportunities that align with your mission. Building relationships with funders who understand and support diverse entrepreneurs can make all the difference in securing initial and long-term success.

2. Bomb Ass Fro

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Bomb Ass Fro was started in 2022; what has the journey been like developing your brand from inception to the New Orleans Entrepreneur Week pitch competition up until now? Is entrepreneurship what you expected?

Bomb Ass Fro  was launched in 2021, and the journey from inception, to NOEW, up until now, has been a ride! Entrepreneurship isn’t all that I expected. I knew that launching a company would be hard work. But I thought it would be all the hard work I enjoyed. I soon learned that there are parts of business that you may not necessarily enjoy doing that need to get done.

As time goes on, I’m learning that there has to be a balance between working on the parts that you love about your business to keep you fueled and doing the necessary administrative things (that you may not enjoy)  to keep your business afloat. If you can master balancing the two, you’ll be successful.

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Curl Daze has been around for almost ten years. What has been the most fulfilling part of your journey transitioning from a hair influencer to a small business owner with a hair care line?

CURLDAZE has recently celebrated four years as a small-owned business. It is very rewarding to assist this company as a brand manager and educate consumers about how to care for their hair properly. I love interacting with naturals who are frustrated with their hair journey, and it’s like we meet at the perfect time because I come in to encourage them not to give up on their hair.

With products that are sulfate-free, alcohol-free, and help manage your hair, it makes the hair care process a breeze. Ultimately, that is what CURLDAZE is all about: helping everyone embrace their hair, one strand at a time.

What advice would you give to other hair care business owners struggling to build an audience for their brand?

We live in a world where consumers want something in their face briefly. We scroll on social media and our phones very frequently. The key is to ensure your brand is in the face of many very often. You have to hit the streets and showcase what you have to offer. Even if you don’t see the views you are looking for, don’t give up! You never know who is watching.

4. Frizz & Co.

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Frizz + Co. was created to help people embrace their natural hair textures. What was the thought process behind creating a community solely for women with natural hair? How did solidifying your target audience help build your brand in the long run?

The thought process behind Frizz + Co.’s community aspect was about the resources I wish I had when managing my curly hair. While the product started the business and was incredibly important, it wasn’t enough. I wanted to create an ecosystem that filled the gap I was seeing beyond finding the right product for my curls, like connecting with like-minded individuals and sharing resources and education around curls.

As I got to know my curls, I felt frustrated. But in connecting with other women in this space, I realized that we all had similar frustrations and texture trauma. It’s so much more than just hair; it’s also a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, and I felt that those experiences were a powerful connector.

I also believe that community is essential for people to get a better feel for the brand, making it a key differentiator. People don’t want to be “sold to”; they expect more. They want a genuine connection with the brand they choose to buy into.

What is the meaning behind your slogan ‘Sunday curls every day of the week’, and how does that slogan influence your brand’s aesthetic?

Sunday curls came from a branding brainstorming session a few years ago.

The idea was to illustrate the feeling behind day one hair: juicy, defined, bouncy curls (i.e., the perfect self-care Sunday dedicated to wash day ).

Also, wash day can be daunting, so we try to make it as pleasurable as possible. I believe we achieved this through small details in the product, like the custom scent, creamy texture, and minimalist aesthetic. Our goal was to design a product that elevates your wash day experience.

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Nuele is the epitome of the clean girl aesthetic, seemingly on brand for former medical professionals. What moment inspired you to pivot into the hair care industry and leave healthcare behind?

The moment Anne and Christine were inspired to create a clean, naturally derived haircare brand was after realizing the impact that their professional backgrounds could have on the haircare industry as a whole. The vast majority of hair care products, including clean/vegan products, are formulated in 3rd party labs that specialize in creating formulations that use cheaper ingredients. This means genetically modified plant-based ingredients, or “vegan”, and a mixture of chemicals traditionally used in haircare, rather than using 100% naturally derived ingredients that perform as well or better, and are safe and healthy for your body.

A 2016 study by the Environmental Working Group found that over 70% of hair products marketed to Black consumers contain dangerous ingredients, compared to 40% of hair products for the general public. As Anne and Christine are biochem and medical professionals, along with Christine’s experience in food science and working with natural ingredients, they realized their new purpose: to create haircare products using 100% toxin-free, naturally derived ingredients that perform as well as traditional hair care.

How did you conceptualize the branding aesthetic and strategize building a strong social media brand for Nuele Hair?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nuele Hair (@nuele_hair)

NUELE’s brand is centered around transparency and authenticity, which is reflected throughout our branding and social strategy. It is important for us to communicate these attributes from our packaging to the individual and authentic experiences that are showcased on our social media. For example, today’s generation does not want to be a “Revlon” girl. They want to be themselves, and we believe it is important to showcase people’s authentic experiences with our products.

Additionally, it’s important for us to know what we’re putting in our bodies, and many brands communicate their ‘key’ ingredients but not their full ingredient lists. We are challenging that norm by incorporating every ingredient in the design for each product’s packaging. Whether on our website or in-store looking at a product, you will always know what ingredients you are using.

Supporting Black-Owned Business: Unlocking the Power of Natural Hair Care

Ooume prides itself on being a natural hair care line at the intersection of motherhood and entrepreneurship. How did you build out your niche in the beauty industry and grow your customer base despite focusing on parents?

I built out my niche and grew my customer base by focusing on a problem I knew other parents were struggling with—finding baby hair care that hydrates coils and curls. As a single mom, I often combine my own self-care routine with my son’s bath time to make the day easier. One time, after a particularly long stretch of not having time for myself, I used my son’s baby hair care products on my own hair. They completely matted my curls, which made me realize the lack of effective, hydrating products for our specific needs.

That moment sparked the creation of Ooume . I wanted to develop a line that cared for my son’s delicate curls and made wash day simpler for both of us. By addressing this real and personal challenge, I was able to connect with other parents who faced the same struggle and build a brand that resonates deeply with our community.

What lessons have you learned while trying to formulate products for children?

Creating products for children has taught me several important lessons. First, it’s essential to understand the sensitivity of a child’s skin and hair, which requires extra care in formulations. Ensuring that every ingredient is gentle, safe, non-toxic, and effective is non-negotiable. I’ve also learned the importance of creating products that can be used by both parents and children, simplifying routines, and making bath time a bonding experience.

From a branding perspective, I knew I wanted a name that would be easy for kids to remember and colors that would naturally draw them in. As a mom, I often find myself energized and soothed by bright colors, especially after a long day of working and caring for my baby. This insight inspired me to design vibrant hues for Ooume’s branding, making it appealing and comforting for both kids and parents alike.
