Material handling is one of the most crucial issues that should be taken into account for eliminating waste and reducing the cost. The purpose of this research is to develop a mathematical model, which will be helpful to construct the routes and determine the service period for the design of milk-run material supply system. The material supply by this system occurs on a just-in-time basis from a central warehouse to several stations. Milk-run material supply system is the round trips are either goods collected from several suppliers and transported to one customer, or goods collected from one supplier and transported to several customers. Besides, it's intends to construct routes based on an initial service period value and attempts to improve the solution by considering different period values. The most suitable solution is decided on the basis of the least total material handling and inventory holding cost. The objective of the mathematical model is the minimization of the total material handling and inventory holding cost. These saving could be either use for reduction of the product cost, which will boost up the sales or to lift the company profit margin.

Logistics and supply chain play important roles in supporting enterprises' operations that aim to satisfy customers' demands. Moreover, the globalization of the world economy and the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution have pushed manufacturers to optimize their operations, particularly transportation and supplying activities. The main objective is to maintain competitive advantages and guarantee the expected benefit. Milk-run, a well-known transportation approach adopted successfully in practice, is used in this study to simultaneously minimize transportation and inventory costs in a just-in-time production environment. The results of this study show that the milk-run approach helps to reduce transportation and inventory costs for the studied company. The milk-run approach, therefore, is proved to be suitable for companies that operate under the just-in-time philosophy.

All companies’ objective is to keep improving their performance in order to maintain the highest profit. Distribution is a crusial activity both for a company and a distributor company. It is about how the goods are delivered to consumers efficiently and effectively as possible. Distribution also requires cost, so its maximization or improvement is really important and can help the company reduce the distribution and transportation cost itself. Milk Run is one of the distribution methods which consolidates the delivery for some supplier in one vehicle at one time delivery. This paper analyzes distribution cost saving improvement using milk run system by comparing data of distribution activity collected before and after using the system with analytical descriptive and comparative methods. The results show cost efficiency and other potential benefit from using milk run system. However, the limitation of this paper is the cost saving efficiency is in terms of the fleet size and numbe...

Material handling is one of the most crucial issues that should be taken into account for eliminating waste, reducing the cost and just in time based delivery of the product. Many industries spending millions of bucks for the transportation of the goods. An effective transportation management system has to be implemented to control the cost of transportation and inventory. Optimized milk-run concept can be utilize to overcome the issue related to the supply chain management system. Milk-run material supply system is the cyclic trips, where either goods are collected from several suppliers and delivered to one customer, or goods are collected from one supplier and delivered to several customers. The objective of this research is the minimization of the total material handling and inventory holding cost. It is also concentrated on just in time delivery to enhance the customer satisfaction. These saving of cost could be either use for reduction of the product cost, which will boost up the sales or to lift the profit margin of the organization. The purpose of this research is to develop a mathematical model and a heuristic approach, which is utilize to construct the routes, calculate the associated cost and determine the service period for the design of a milk-run material supply system with simultaneous pickup and delivery. The material supply by this system occurs on a just-in-time basis from a regional offices to several stations of the courier service. Besides, the proposed heuristic approach intends to construct routes based on an initial service period value and attempts to improve the solution by considering different period values. Furthermore the scheduling of the vehicles is calculated based on demands and routes of network. The most optimum solution is decided on the basis of the least total transportation cost and minimum time. Genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the vehicle routing with simultaneous pickup and delivery within time frame (VRPTWSPD) problem related to milk-run concept. Algorithm is applied by the help of MATLAB and results are presented. The result showed the performance and effectiveness of the algorithm.
The implementation of milk-run in Indonesia has been started since 2005. As a developing country, there is a challenge to operate milk-run smoothly especially in urban area due to severe traffic congestion and unfavourable road condition in some areas. This research aimed to analyze the practice of milk-run operation in one of the biggest Japanese automotive companies in Indonesia. Transportation Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) is applied in order to perform just-in-time delivery in the supply chain before operating milk-run. It is discussed that this company still need to continue in improving milk-run operation. The operation system needs control and integration from manufacturer, supplier and logistics partner. The advantage of milk-run operation is cost reduction and also support green logistics in decreasing emission of carbondioxide (CO2) by reducing the number of trucks used.

, http://www.euroasiapub.org (An open access scholarly, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary, monthly, and fully refereed journals.) Abstract Dairy is a low margin high turnover industry. It basically depends on monsoon. Managing volatile demand and supply, dealing with milk price fluctuations and staying competitive are major challenges faced by Indian dairy industry. Maintaining consistent level of profitability, cost competitiveness and improving productivity becomes essential now ever than before specifically after the liberalization of dairy industry in 1991.Their arise a need for every dairy value chain member to explore and identify an opportunity to create & add value to make dairy value chain cost effective and customer focused. Against this background, the researcher tried to understand the potential of the milk run concept in improving dairy plant's potential to improve the general efficiency in the Milk Collection and transport system. Adequate attention paid to transportation network lead to reduction in transport cost. Transportation and collection constitute around 30 to 50 % of the total dairy operation cost. Prompt service, efficient collection, lower transportation costs provide competitive advantage to the milk processing plant. This research paper took review of the milk Run concept and implemented it in one of the Collection Centre of the reputed cooperative dairy processing plant. The researcher used before and after research design to compare and contrast the information to reach the appropriate conclusion. The application of the milk run concept showed positive results in terms of improvement in collection and transportation efficiency. It also revealed that the wastage in milk and labor cost reduced substantially.

Risk and uncertainty have been found to be one of the indispensable parts of any manufacturing or food supply chain, No matter how strong is the supply chain, risk and uncertainty come into the picture by disrupting the operational flow. The situation further gets complicated, if the nature of the material the supply chain deals in, is perishable requiring conditioned transportation and storage. Transportation is the major function of a supply chain, which provides the movement of goods. Finding out efficient vehicle routes is an important problem. Hence transportation is a major issue in the food supply chain. In this work, the optimization of the transportation route for a public sector milk dairy in Madurai is carried out. In this firm, vehicles collect milk from various procurement points and finally reached the depot. When the firm can abbreviate the corresponding routing distance, then it will be able to provide better service and also the transportation costs can be reduced, as cost reduction is the important objective of every industry. This project also aims in a comparative study of the current transportation route used in this milk dairy and the optimized route suggested by this work considering the distance, cost, quantity, number of vehicles & road conditions.

This paper discusses fundamental issues in dairy logistics in a tutorial format. We summarize findings of more than twenty student groups who carried out independent literature surveys and interviewed professionals in the industry. The critical issues in carrying out dairy products logistics, the logistics strategies that are employed by dairy producers in the world and some newly introduced products in the industry and in what ways the introduction of these new products changes the logistics operations are pointed out. The importance of hygiene, cooling, time, humidity, cost, distance, flexibility and meeting the demand is emphasized under the subtitle of critical issues. Except those critical issues, there are some others like short shelf life, quality, emulsion, pasteurization, UHT which depend on the characteristics of the milk and milk products. Logistics strategies in dairy industry are studied by dividing it into two subtitles: the ones that are used in the world and the ones in Turkey. A benchmarking between Turkey and the world is also included at the end. As the variety of milk and milk products increase day by day, the new ingredients of new products also affects the transportation plans. Those impacts are also discussed as a part of our paper. Some descriptive drawings and figures are also embodied. Throughout this paper, only the production, warehousing and transportation of milk, cheese, yoghurt, and similar dairy products are discussed. Ice-cream especially is set out of the scope as it completely differs from actual dairy products as milk, cheese and yoghurt in the means of production and distribution.

1 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to Review the Literature on milk Run logistics and to present an overview of its implementation practices adopted by the manufacturing organizations. The paper also discusses milk run logistics in the procurement system with a special emphasis on the automobile industry. milk run system is all about logistics support for the supply chain. milk run system results in reduction in cost of transportation, travelling path and fuel consumption. The effects of the direct shipment on the traffic conditions and on the environment have also been studied.
2 By introducing the milk run logistics under heavily congested traffic conditions, the supplier can have full control on the procurement process. Also, the number of trucks on road can be reduced thus resulting in improvement in traffic conditions. The effect of the milk run logistics on the reduction of CO2 is also discussed. The promotion of milk -Run logistics can be highly evaluated from the viewpoint of environmental policy. Index Terms milk run logistics , supply chain, just in time, procurement system.
3 I. INTRODUCTION HE business environment is becoming increasingly competitive as supply-chain business customers expectations ratchet ever upwards and the capability of competing companies to deliver consistent quality at low prices continues to develop [1]. Today Automobile industry has an important place in the national economy. Automobile industry has a high rate of input and output, as a production tool and a durable consumer good. Whether in production stage, sales stage, or use stage, is an important source of revenue.
4 The supply chain management of every organization is thinking every step's logistics cost of the supply chain from upstream to downstream, then grasp the elements of the supply chain links for maximum benefit throughout the supply chain optimal solution. The formation of a high efficiency with low-cost supply chain can be a competitive advantage, and success in the market [2]. Materials procurement system in a manufacturing plant is demanded to be very effective and efficient. If a system becomes more effective and efficient it will directly makes Manuscript received March 23, 2011.

It will also reduce the production base price then the company s profit will increase. The competitions in the auto industry in around the world have become so fierce nowadays that auto manufacturers have to find better ways to manage and minimize its production cost.))
6 Supply chain and logistics management plays an important role as logistics costs are major cost components in the total production cost. The Just-in-Time system (also lean production system) implemented by many other auto manufacturers with different degrees of success as a means to reduce production costs. Fig. 1. Simplified steps of supply procurement planning process [3] Figure 1 depicts a simplified lean production system. Its main concept is to reduce the wastes found throughout the systems, particularly those in warehouses inbound supply inventory.
7 By using the Just-in-Time system, planning and scheduling of every significant parts of the production have to be done effectively and efficiently. Supply procurement is one of the most important parts in the production system and has to be planned and scheduled to support the needs of the production line. The supply procurement planning process of the case company begins with volume calculation corresponding to milk Run logistics : Literature Review and Directions Gurinder Singh Brar and Gagan Saini TVOLUME CALCULATION MASTER ROUTE PLANNING SUPPLIER NEGOTIATIONS MASTER ROUTE REVISION DOCK SCHEDULING DAILY ROUTE PLANNING Proceedings of the World Congress on Engineering 2011 Vol I WCE 2011, July 6 - 8, 2011, London, : 978-988-18210-6-5 ISSN: 2078-0958 (Print); ISSN: 2078-0966 (Online)WCE 2011 the production plan for the next period.
8 This entails breakdown of parts and quantities required as well as identification of potential suppliers. Next, a master milk -run pickup route is created using information about supplier locations and pickup volume at each supplier location. This step is currently done manually. Planners begin from previous month s mater route plan and perform incremental changes to the plan according to changing volumes. Next, the company informs its suppliers of the volumes and pickup schedule, and enters negotiations with each supplier. If modification to the master route is needed after the negotiation, it is done to finalize the period s master route.
9 Once the master route is completed, it is then used to schedule receiving dock activities. This is necessary to avoid congestion and ensure high and uniform utilization of the facility. The master route is then used for the entire period as a template on which daily operation is based. The daily milk -run pickup route will deviate from master route slightly according to shifting daily volumes. This also is currently done manually [3]. It is also necessary to have a safe logistics system (against transportation damages, wrong item delivery and stock-outs) that put importance not just on speed but also on transportation quality.
10 In order to make the procurement system very effective and efficient the industry will prepare the three logistics concept, namely:- 1. The first concept is flexible logistics that can cope with demand fluctuation. 2. The second concept is logistics with a competitive edge as a result of minimum lead times (LT) and lower costs . Ultimately, it includes reducing logistics costs by advancing localization of parts suppliers and preparing milk - Run route. After performing a re-assessment of such issues on production and procurement, shortening of lead times and reduction of distribution costs are pursued.

This chapter describes the author’s method of designation of optimal number of trailers for milk-run system. Designated method is created based on MS Excel. In the literature analysis, authors describe milk-run intralogistics systems, advantages and disadvantages of this system, and the issue related to determining the optimum number of means of transport. Described developed method defines several basic steps leading to determining the optimal number of trailers, based on the specificity of the production system, the size, and distribution of demand, the characteristics of the selected trailers types and the size of transport containers. In described approach, authors also include the determination of the size and frequency of deliveries, based on the specificity of the orders from workstations and the arrangement of the bus stops. All stages of the analysis are presented based on the example of the selected theoretical production system. The goal of determination of optimal number of trailers is minimizing the cost of purchasing vehicles, ensuring safe, timely, and efficient supplies of parts to individual locations, while minimizing traffic congestion and the achievement of proper use of available labor resources.
