Assessing Writing
Frank Schmalleger
Background I started writing books in the criminal justice field almost 40 years ago. My early works were monographs on specialized topics, followed by edited volumes that were occasionally assembled with the help of coeditors. At one point, I even crafted an encyclopedia of crime and justice that made use of solicited contributions from hundreds of experts in the field (and which was published by Greenwood Publishing Group).
Writing a textbook is a daunting, time consuming and (potentially) rewarding experience. Making the decision to write a textbook is, of itself, a complex, challenging process. To assist those who may at some point in their careers face this decision, the panel will address many of the issues potential authors face. In addition, panelists will share their personal experiences with textbook authoring. The panel will be highly interactive, enabling audience members to pose questions and share their own thoughts.

About this book. These are the lecture notes of a course I taught in the fall of 2004. This was the first time I taught the course, and the first time this course was taught, period. These lecture notes, therefore, are probably full of inaccuracies, mild fibs, and gross errors. Ok, make that ‘are definitely full of &c’, because I know of several errors that time has prevented me from addressing. However, I would be interested in hearing any comments and suggestions you have, or
