ഭാര്യാഭർത്താക്കന്മാർ തമ്മിലുള്ള ഇഷ്ടത്തിന്റെ ആഴം തേടിയുള്ളൊരു യാത്രയാണ് അനൂപ് മേനോൻ തിരക്കഥയെഴുതി സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത് അഭിനയിച്ച ‘പദ്മ’ എന്ന കുഞ്ഞു സിനിമ. എത്രമേൽ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള ബന്ധമായാലും എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ പിടിതരാതെ വഴുതിപ്പോകുന്ന മനുഷ്യ മനസ്സുകളുടെ സങ്കീർണതയും ബന്ധങ്ങൾ ഉലയുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന പിടച്ചിലും ഏറെ കരുതലോടെ അനൂപ് മേനോൻ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയ പിടിമുറുക്കിയ ഇന്നത്തെ സമൂഹത്തിൽ ഒരുപക്ഷേ പലരുടെയും  ജീവിതത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചയും ഓർമപ്പെടുത്തലും കൂടിയാണ് പദ്മ. ത്രില്ലറുകളുടെയും മാസ്സ് ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെയും അതിപ്രസരമുള്ള കാലത്ത് സുന്ദരമായൊരു കാവ്യം പോലെ ദാമ്പത്യബന്ധത്തിന്റെ മനോഹരമായൊരു ആവിഷ്കാരവുമായുള്ള അനൂപ് മേനോന്റെ വരവ് ഏറെ പ്രശംസയർഹിക്കുന്നു.  തിരക്കുകൾക്കിടയിൽ സ്വന്തം കുടുംബത്തോടൊപ്പം സമയം ചെലവഴിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്തവർക്ക് നല്ലൊരു മെസേജ് കൂടി പദ്മ പകർന്നു നൽകുന്നു. 

കോഴിക്കോടുള്ള ഒരു ഉൾഗ്രാമത്തിൽനിന്ന് എറണാകുളത്തെത്തിയ, അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന, സക്സസ്സ്ഫുൾ ആയ മനഃശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ് രവിശങ്കർ.  മെട്രോ സിറ്റിയിൽ താമസിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവിടെയുള്ളവരുമായി കിടപിടിക്കാനുതകുന്നൊരു മണിമാളിക സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ രവിക്ക് ജീവിതത്തിലും അല്പസ്വൽപം പരിഷ്കാരം വേണമെന്നുള്ള ചിന്താഗതിയാണ്. എന്നാൽ രവിയുടെ ഭാര്യ പദ്മയാകട്ടെ എട്ടുംപൊട്ടും തിരിയാത്ത തികഞ്ഞ നാട്ടിൻപുറംകാരിയും. ഭാര്യയെ സൊസൈറ്റിയിലെ മറ്റു പൊങ്ങച്ചക്കാരിസ്ത്രീകളെപ്പോലെയാക്കാൻ രവി ആദ്യം ചെയ്തത് അവളിൽനിന്ന് ശുദ്ധ നാട്ടിൻപുറം ഭാഷ പറിച്ചു മാറ്റുക എന്നുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. പദ്മയെ മോഡേൺ ഭാഷ പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഒരു മാഷെത്തന്നെ രവി കണ്ടെത്തി.  

നാട്ടിൻപുറത്തെ പീടികയിലെ നാടൻ സാരികൾക്കു പകരം അവളുടെ വാർഡ്രോബിൽ സബ്യസാചിയുൾപ്പടെ മുന്തിയ ഡിസൈനേഴ്സിന്റെ കസ്റ്റം മെയ്ഡ് സാരികൾ നിറഞ്ഞു. മുടി സ്റ്റൈൽ ചെയ്ത് ചുണ്ടിൽ ചായം പുരട്ടി എടുത്താൽ പൊങ്ങാത്ത ആഭരണങ്ങളും പകിട്ടേറുന്ന സാരികളും പാർട്ടികളും പാർലറുമായി തിരക്കിലാകുമ്പോഴും പദ്മ മനസ്സ് കുളിർപ്പിക്കുന്ന നാട്ടുവഴികളും ഇളംകാറ്റുപോലെയുള്ള അവളുടെ പഴയ കുടുംബബന്ധവും തിരിച്ചുപിടിക്കാൻ കൊതിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കുട്ടികൾ ഊട്ടിയിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നത് സ്റ്റാറ്റസ് സിംബൽ ആണെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു രവി മകനെക്കൂടി അകറ്റുമ്പോൾ പദ്മ നഗരത്തിലെ തിരക്കുകളിൽ തീരെ തനിച്ചാവുകയാണ്. സൈക്കോളജിസ്റ്റായ ഭർത്താവ് മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ ബന്ധങ്ങൾ ഒട്ടിച്ചു ചേർക്കുന്നതിൽ വിജയിക്കുന്നെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടുപോകുന്ന ഭാര്യയുടെ നോവ് അറിയാതെ പോകുന്നു.  രോഗികളോട് ‘നമുക്കൊരുമിച്ചിത് നേരിടാം’ എന്ന് പറയുന്ന രവി പക്ഷേ സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിൽ പ്രശ്‍നങ്ങൾ ഉടലെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ അടിപതറുകയാണ്. നമ്മോടു തെറ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നവരുടെ ന്യായം കണ്ടെത്താനും തെറ്റ് പൊറുക്കാനും കഴിയുന്നത് ഇഷ്ടത്തിന്റെ ആഴം കൂടുമ്പോഴാണെന്ന് കൂടി പദ്മ എന്ന ചിത്രം പറയുന്നു.   

ഡോക്ടർ രവിശങ്കർ ആയി അനൂപ് മേനോനും പദ്മ ആയി സുരഭി ലക്ഷ്മിയും മത്സരിച്ചഭിനയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മികച്ച നടിക്കുള്ള ദേശീയ അവാർഡ് കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയ സുരഭി ലക്ഷ്മി ഏറെ നാളത്തെ കാത്തിരിപ്പിനു ശേഷമാണ് ഒരു കൊമേഴ്സ്യൽ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ടൈറ്റിൽ റോളിൽ എത്തുന്നതെന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും പദ്മയ്ക്കുണ്ട്.  തന്റെ നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ കോഴിക്കോടൻ ഭാഷയിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ രസിപ്പിക്കുകയും അതേസമയം തന്നെ കണ്ണ് നനയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഏറെ ഡൈനാമിക്കായ 'പദ്മ' സുരഭിയുടെ കരിയറിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കഥാപാത്രം തന്നെയാകും.പദ്മയുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയും മാനസിക സംഘർഷങ്ങളും കോമഡിയും കുറ്റമറ്റ രീതിയിൽ സുരഭി അഭിനയിച്ചു ഫലിപ്പിച്ചു.   നാട്ടിൻപുറംകാരനായും മെട്രോനഗരത്തിലെ സ്റ്റൈലിഷായ മനഃശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ രവിശങ്കറായും അനൂപ് മേനോൻ തന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം മികവുറ്റതാക്കി. ‌രവിയുടെ സുഹൃത്ത് ടോണിയായി ശങ്കർ രാമകൃഷ്ണനും മനഃശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയായി മാല പാർവതിയും വീട്ടുവേലക്കാരിയായി ശ്രുതി രജനീകാന്തും രവിശങ്കറിന്റെ പേഷ്യൻസായി മറീനയും ദിനേശ് പ്രഭാകറും ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ട്. 

ചിത്രത്തിൽ എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട മറ്റൊരു ഘടകം പാട്ടുകളാണ്. ഹൃദയബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ ചൂടും ചൂരും നിറഞ്ഞ വരികൾ രചിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് അനൂപ് മേനോൻ തന്നെയാണ്. വരികളുടെ ആത്മാവറിഞ്ഞു സംഗീതം നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത് നിനോയ് വർഗീസാണ്. ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഗാനങ്ങൾ ആലപിച്ച പുതുമുഖ ഗായകൻ രാജ്‌കുമാർ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായൊരു വേഷം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിജയ് യേശുദാസും ഹരി ശങ്കറും സിതാര കൃഷ്ണകുമാറുമാണ് മറ്റു ഗായകർ. മഹാദേവൻ തമ്പിയുടെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണവും സിയാൻ ശ്രീകാന്തിന്റെ എഡിറ്റിങ്ങും ചിത്രത്തെ സുന്ദരമാക്കി.   

ദാമ്പത്യത്തിൽ സ്ത്രീകൾ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഒറ്റപ്പെടലുകളും പങ്കാളികളുടെ ലൈംഗിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയ അഡിക്‌ഷൻ മൂലം വഴിതെറ്റുന്ന കൗമാരങ്ങളും സുന്ദരികളായ കുടുംബിനിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് നുഴഞ്ഞുകയറുന്ന ജാരന്മാരും തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി കാലിക പ്രസക്തമായ വിഷയങ്ങൾ അനൂപ് മേനോൻ പദ്മയിലൂടെ ചർച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. പദ്മ കാണുമ്പോൾ പറഞ്ഞു പഴകിയ കഥയാണല്ലോ എന്ന് തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും അനൂപിന്റെ എഴുത്തും സുരഭിയുടെ ചടുലമായ അഭിനയശൈലിയും സ്ഥിരം ക്ളീഷേ ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽനിന്നു പദ്മയെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാക്കുന്നു. 

കഥ, തിരക്കഥ, സംഭാഷണം, സംവിധാനം എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഏറെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ജോലികളെല്ലാം നിർവഹിച്ച അനൂപ് എല്ലാ തലങ്ങളിലും കുറ്റമറ്റ രീതിയിയിൽ വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പദ്മയുടെ രസകരമായ ട്രെയിലറിൽ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ, ചിത്രം പൊട്ടിയാൽ കിടപ്പാടമൊഴിച്ച് എല്ലാം പോകുമെന്ന അനൂപ് മേനോന്റെ ആശങ്ക വെറുതെയല്ല ചിത്രം നിർമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് അനൂപ് മേനോന്റെ സ്വന്തം നിർമാണ സംരംഭമായ അനൂപ്മേനോൻ സ്റ്റോറീസ് ആണ്. ലിവിങ് റ്റുഗതറും വിവാഹേതര ബന്ധങ്ങളും ചർച്ചയാകുന്ന ഇക്കാലത്ത് കാലമെത്ര മാറിയാലും ഭാര്യാഭർതൃബന്ധത്തിന് അതിന്റേതായ പരിശുദ്ധിയുണ്ടെന്നും ആഴമേറിയ സ്ത്രീപുരുഷ ബന്ധത്തിനൊരു സുഖവും ഭംഗിയുമുണ്ടെന്നും അടിവരയിട്ടു പറയുന്ന പദ്മ എന്ന ചിത്രം കേരളത്തിലെ ദമ്പതികൾ തിയറ്ററിൽ പോയി തന്നെ ആസ്വദിക്കേണ്ട ഒന്നാണ്. പദ്മ എന്ന ചിത്രം കാണുന്ന ദമ്പതിമാർ വല്ലപ്പോഴുമൊന്നു മുറുക്കെ കെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കാൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും.

Padma Malayalam Movie

Padma is a 2022 Indian movie directed by Anoop Menon starring Anoop Menon, Surabhi Lakshmi, Maala Parvathi and Shankar Ramakrishnan. The feature film is produced by Anoop Menon and the music composed by Ninoy Varghese.

The story of renowned psychologist Ravishankar, his wife Padmaja and some amusing incidents with his clients. Ravi and Padma hailing from a remote village are residing now in a city and part of the elite society. Ravi has embraced the city life and is happy whereas Padma, is still trying to fit in. Ravi deals with strange cases of relationships which make for the hilarious portions of the movie.

Padma review: A self-sabotaging attempt at social commentary

The slow-burner is a cluster of poorly developed social messages surrounding infidelity that unfortunately contradicts itself

Story: In the upper echelons of the social hierarchy, psychologist Ravi (Anoop Menon) and his wife Padma (Surabhi Lakshmi) settle into their new home. Their seemingly happy marriage is strained when Padma is attracted to another man.

Review: It is a commonly acknowledged rule of thumb in storytelling that it is ideal to establish the characters and their arcs within the opening 10 minutes. In Padma, however, the film takes the entire first half to set the story in motion. There are several characters introduced within this timeframe, and the vast majority of them have nothing of significance to the overarching narrative.

Abdu (Ambi Neenasam) and Jolly (Shruthi Rajanikanth), the servants working at Ravi and Padma’s house, are introduced very early on, but their roles are relegated to being nothing more than comic relief and have absolutely no impact on the narrative. In fact, one would imagine that Jolly was crucial to the plot considering the time spent introducing her to the audience. But her character completely disappears from the second act, which in itself is a very broad spectrum.

Coincidentally, this is the case for several characters in the film who are thrown into the narrative at random, including the narrator, who for some reason is represented as a statue of Cupid — part of the furniture in the large house owned by Ravi and Padma. If it’s a nuanced symbolic representation of something the filmmakers are trying to tell, it simply fails to connect in any allegorical sense.

The film’s greatest setback is its inability to offer consistent pacing for the narrative. Each time the story is about to set itself, a song comes in at random with characters moving around in slow motion. It has most certainly extended the film’s runtime by significantly longer than it should be. But when the story does start finally taking shape, its very convoluted messages of social progression are shoehorned into the narrative.

The social commentary is incorporated in the film often through Ravi’s clients. And it’s unclear if he’s actually a psychologist or a sex therapist because all of his clients that make an appointment are either sexually frustrated women, a couple who are in a love triangle, or a school girl who is addicted to porn. While it should be applauded that taboo subjects are discussed quite freely in Malayalam films, it completely misses the point about the complexities surrounding sexuality, abuse, and porn addiction.

The woman who is unsatisfied with her husband is added to the film just to recreate a poorly executed version of the iconic Sharon Stone scene from Basic Instinct (1992). Of course, she was not afforded the opportunity to smoke a cigarette like Stone, even though she asks Ravi a couple of times if she could smoke.

In the case of the teenage girl who watches porn, the focus is actually on the fact that she watches porn and not on the fact that she was sexually abused by an adult. What is more alarming is the fact that an emotionally unstable and drunk Ravi tries to flirt with this girl, who is presumably a minor. In a more civilised society that would have put him in prison, added him to the sex offender’s registry, and be forever labelled a paedophile. But it’s brushed aside in the film as a momentary lapse of judgement from a heavily intoxicated Ravi.

Feminism, gaslighting, and class elitism are some of the other themes explored in the film. And each time the story tries to support one cause, it steps on the other to make a point but ultimately fails on both accounts. It’s also borderline comical how the upper-class women are depicted in the film. The screenplay in particular when they appear on screen is cringe-inducing. It would also give the poorly depicted feminists in the highly problematic Sibi Malayil film, Kaliveedu (1996) , a run for its money.

The film does have its odd bright moments, especially during the flashback scenes, where the story is more relatable and grounded. And there are also some great performances by the lead actors, Surabhi Lakshmi and Anoop Menon. The resolution to the film’s primary arc is also measured, and the references to Manichitrathazhu (1993) are surprisingly well done.

Verdict: The film is a convoluted collection of scenes and moments stitched together without a definitive structure. The plot is rife with poorly defined themes, and the supporting characters are severely under-utilised. While Menon does a commendable job as an actor in the film, his role as an auteur leaves a lot to be desired.

Pada movie review: Narrating a social cause through realistic plank

Riding on a realistic plank, 'Pada' is based on a real-life incident in the 90s linked to a protest by 'Ayyankali Pada', an activist group, against a government ordinance, which violated the rights of Adivasis on their land.

The prelude, the build-up that precedes the high drama and the culmination toeing the real-life incident has been captured in a balanced way.

The seamless blend of social cause and cinematic treatment is a highlight of the movie. The tale is narrated through protagonists led by Kunchacko Boban, Dileesh Pothan, Vinayakan and Joju George.

You may miss a mass appeal as its thrust is on a naturalistic depiction of events. But there is a lot to enjoy in the aesthetic charm of the ultra-realistic depiction of the story. The crowd, the dialogues and sounds popping in from outside the frame and the visual details add up to the beauty of the movie.

The heat of the drama is felt right from the beginning as Balu (Vinayakan) makes the moves to execute the 'mission' by shifting his family to a different place and embarks on his journey towards the target destination. As the other members of the group together proceed with their clandestine operations the plot provides sort of edge-of-the-seat experience and time flies by.

The ensemble cast is another piece of brilliance extraordinaire. The characters are well-etched and the actors have taken utmost care to maintain the range within the framework.

Vinayakan stands class apart in registering the vehement, deep-rooted sentiments of the downtrodden as well as in conveying their pain for being denied their due. Meanwhile, Kunchacko Boban as Ragesh portrays the angst of an activist fighting for justice. Joju playing very close to his character is also a protestor, yet sober and light at heart.

While Dileesh Pothan's character of Narayanan Kutty is a person known to his close social circles yet goes underground to join a protest using violence.

Amongst all it's Arjun Radhakrishnan, playing the role of the collector Ajay Dange, who steals the show. He has been able to fully convey the urgency, the turmoil, the stress and the nerve-wracking tension of a highly placed official with an extreme conviction of his duty and jurisprudence.

The BGM elevates the mood and gels well with the surround sounds producing a mystic symphony in certain scenes.

KM Kamal has once again proved his brilliance in pulling off a serious, thought-provoking piece of artwork.
