Bottom line: Comcast Business Internet , servicing small to midsize startups for over a decade, is a solid alternative to the DSL internet connection that’s currently forcing your employees to squeeze 20 pounds of data through a five-pound tube.

It may cost a little more than similarly micro-focused providers, but its dependable, fast network—not to mention a coaxial cable infrastructure that spans most of the US—rates a look for your expanding shop.

Comcast is everywhere, like Starbucks and Pizza Hut, Comcast is everywhere—they don’t necessarily make everyone’s favorite latte or pepperoni slice, but they’re probably serving it somewhere near you.

Comcast Business’s far-reaching availability and reliably stable high-speed internet service are, however, counterbalanced by an 800-pound gorilla with a headset: a notoriously iffy customer service reputation. Still, with five service packages geared toward small businesses and, again, sheer ubiquity, Comcast Business internet is a definite startup contender—just be prepared to pay a little more for it.

In some parts of the country, Comcast Business utilizes fiber-optic connections, which transmit light through glass or plastic threads instead of electromagnetic cables. The biggest advantages of fiber are less signal loss and interference and evenly matched upload and download speeds (more on Comcast Business fiber availability later).

• Business Internet Essential is a bare-bones setup for a four-device operation. Its modest 50 Mbps can handle basic web browsing and email functions but little else. It’s not recommended for heavy file traffic.
• Business Internet Standard is for a seven device shop conducting serious online business. Its 100 Mbps speed can easily shoulder website hosting and cloud-based applications with room to grow.

What you should know about Comcast Business internet

You’ve heard it: Comcast has terrible customer service. It’s legend, but not entirely accurate—most of those complaints are aimed at the residential Xfinity side of the service. Comcast Business fares better in customer satisfaction. Most online customer reviews give positive feedback on the company’s internet speeds and support, while many negative comments regard pricing.

Comcast Business internet sells itself as being “built for business,” 1 specifically small business, promising quick resolutions to service interruptions—including billing credits for downtime and the previously mentioned money-back guarantee trial period. Industry reviews from J.D. Power and here at Business.org rank Comcast’s overall small-business internet service just below that of Verizon Fios (which is less widely available) and AT&T (which is more expensive). 2

Even though—or perhaps because—it falls somewhere between its competitors on several fronts, there’s plenty to like about Comcast Business internet. Mbps to Gbps, speed is speed, no matter which company is providing it.

The takeaway

Comcast Business internet is neither the fastest nor the cheapest, but Comcast Business internet is reliable, available, and loaded with extra features to sweeten the deal. Apart from the monthly pricing, it’s a small-business-friendly service that offers room to grow (to a point). And while there are some of the usual service and outage complaints, Comcast’s past negative customer service reputation doesn’t necessarily apply to its business internet division.

Xfinity is the consumer, or residential, division of Comcast, providing household TV, internet, and phone services. Comcast split in 2010 to differentiate home services from business customers, as well as to “refresh” its cable-provider image from decades past. 3

The move to Xfinity TV and internet was also called out as a play to distance Comcast from its notoriously terrible customer service reputation and has generally just confused the public to this day. Also, besides being Xfinity’s parent company, Comcast also owns NBCUniversal and its stable of more than a dozen broadcast and cable TV networks plus TV and film production studios.

The real answer is “all of it”—who wants anything less than the fastest internet connection ? The question should be, How much do you want to pay?

Comcast’s Starter Internet at $69.95 a month would satisfy the basic online needs of a pair of employees with just 35 Mbps. The Business Internet 100 package ups the speed and user capacity for an additional $40.00 a month, all the way up to Business Internet 300, which can handle up to and beyond 10 employees—and large file transfers and heavy hosting traffic—for $164.90.

Fiber-optic internet, a growing component of Comcast Business’s internet service model, is a relatively new gigabit speeds technology. While the company’s fiber reach is as good as or better than most other internet providers, it’s still not everywhere; you may have to check into other ISPs . For enterprise clients in certain areas, Comcast offers SLA-backed dedicated internet with static IP addresses and symmetric speeds of 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps, but pricing for this type of internet service is not publicly listed by Comcast or other dedicated internet providers. Wherever your fiber internet connection or power is interrupted, the cellular route immediately switches to an available 4G LTE wireless connection to maintain basic internet service for up to 16 hours on computers or other devices, like point-of-sale registers, that keep your revenue flowing. Most Comcast business internet plans include SecurityEdge to protect your network and inform you of any attempted breaches. This intelligent cybersecurity tool updates and refreshes every five minutes, pulling the most up-to-date information possible from a global threat database. According to Comcast, over 30 percent of SecurityEdge customers had a threat blocked in each quarter of 2021. Static IP Addresses

Comcast offers static IP addresses for all business fiber and dedicated internet clients. For business internet, a static IP address starts at $24.95 per month with the option to buy one, three or 13 permanent addresses for an additional charge. With dedicated plans, Comcast assigns up to two permanent IP addresses per circuit to run multiple servers or applications like a virtual private network (VPN). You can also purchase additional IP addresses for dedicated plans.

Comcast divides the U.S. market between three regions — Northeast, Central and Western. The prices below reflect an address in the Western division. Our breakdown reflects discounts for autopay and paperless billing, and most plans include free professional installation. Unfortunately, some contracts require a multiyear commitment with escalating prices and early termination fees.

In addition to the above business internet plans, Comcast also offers ethernet-dedicated internet with symmetrical speeds from 1 Mbps up to 10Gbs, static IP addresses, primary and secondary DNS hosting, service level agreements, and 24/7 priority support. However, pricing for the dedicated internet plans is not publicly available and requires a discussion with a Comcast representative.

Implementation

Comcast’s business internet installation is typically available within five to 10 days of placing your order, which is on par with the rest of the industry. If you sign up over the phone, you’ll be able to get help from a product specialist to determine the appropriate internet speed for your business needs based on your type of company, number of internet users, application types and usage trends. Once a service technician is onsite for your implementation appointment, the installation process takes anywhere from 90 minutes to four hours depending on the complexity of your service and structure. Comcast recommends you provide at least two 110v AC outlets for service.

Customer Support

All Comcast business internet plans include 24/7 support, which is something you’ll find with most major ISPs. While the company’s residential Xfinity customers may wait as long as 24 hours for a response to an outage, Comcast business customers receive priority service with a four-hour response window. We spent time speaking directly with Comcast’s support team during our review process and found the staff knowledgeable, helpful and courteous in all of their responses to our questions about services and features.

Comcast also has an online self-service portal where you can check the status of a connection, troubleshoot your internet, configure your services, and reach a support specialist via chat. The Comcast website features additional resources and informative articles to improve the user experience. We appreciate that the vendor also offers the Comcast Business App through which you can manage your business internet without being onsite.

Limitations

The pricing for most Comcast business internet plans requires some attention to the fine print. The advertised price is usually what you’ll pay only for the first year of service, with a significant price increase for each subsequent year. For example, a plan that starts at $139.99 per month will jump to $154.99 in year two and $194.99 for the final year of your contract. Keep that in mind when budgeting this expense.

You should also remember that Comcast’s fiber plans are limited to a maximum upload speed of 35 Mbps, the same limit you’ll find with Spectrum. One of the major concerns when starting a business is preventing network security threats . Comcast Business Security Edge is an add-on that can help protect against threats like malware, ransomware, phishing and botnet attacks, an additional layer of security unique to Comcast in our review of business internet service providers (ISPs). Comcast Business Internet already offers plans with download speeds up to 1.25 Gbps. However, startups in need of their own connection can take advantage of Comcast’s Dedicated Internet using Ethernet. Symmetrical upload and download speeds mean that large web conferences, data transfers and any cloud-based service can be handled with ease. We especially liked this feature for tech startups or fully remote teams that are reliant on strong, fast internet connections to remain operational.

4G LTE Wireless Backup

Outages can occur at any point during the development of a new venture, which means it’s important to have backup options. Comcast’s Internet Connection Pro Automatic Backup provides business customers with 4G LTE connections to keep businesses up and running should a connectivity outage occur. A team of experts behind the scenes can assist with the needs of the customer until the primary connection is back online.

Comcast Business Internet costs range from $69.99 per month for the Essential plan to $349.99 per month for the Gigabit plan. The full list is as follows:

These prices reflect the monthly payment for the first 12 months of the agreement (excluding the first month), after which the price increases for the remainder of the contract. There’s also a discount for customers that enroll in AutoPay and paperless billing, and each plan comes with Comcast’s Business SecurityEdge internet connection. Note that these prices exclude installation fees and Comcast business equipment fees.

Comcast Business Internet Setup

Depending on location, Comcast’s internet setup can take anywhere from three to five days once a plan has been purchased. Customers can either set up an appointment with the service specialist or request to be put on a waitlist for an earlier installation date. If customers choose to include Business Wi-Fi in their business internet package, they will have the option to set up and install the Comcast Business Wireless Gateway themselves.

Customers are required to lease a router specifically for Comcast Business Internet for internet-related services, such as SecurityEdge and Business Voice, unless their current modem is deemed compatible with the service. While installation is included in the internet plan, there is a separate monthly fee of $19.95 per month should they need it. Similar to Business Wi-Fi, there is a self-installation guide on the Comcast Business Website as well should you decide to install the equipment yourself.

Comcast Business Internet Customer Service

Comcast Business Internet has 24/7 customer service for its customers, either by phone at (855) 319-0103 or by email via their website form. We found the 24/7 access to support to be a great benefit as it isn’t a given with some of the other business ISPs that we reviewed. Customers can also use online chat and connect with a representative for all general business internet inquiries.

Comcast Business Internet Drawbacks

While Comcast’s fiber-optic network spans across the nation, it’s still relatively limited in availability compared to cable or satellite internet. Customers in rural areas or places that Comcast doesn’t cover should consider our Viasat review for an ISP that is more widely available.

We also found Comcast’s gigabit internet plans to be costly when compared to other internet providers offering plans for roughly the same speeds. Fiber-optic internet in general does cost more than cable or satellite internet, but Comcast’s prices still seemed very steep for its gigabit speeds. If your business requires heavy data transfers or other services that rely heavily on symmetric download speeds, you will need to consider the plan cost in addition to other fees, including equipment and add-ons.

Methodology

When considering business internet providers for review, we kept in mind some of the features that business owners would need to get their business going from start to finish. Part of that process included extensive research, participating in provider calls and finally deciding on a best pick case for each of the vendors. It’s important to note the difference between Internet speed to your business and what reaches an individual device — like a switch or computer — at your business. Our test measures the speed to a device. Sometimes, these results are lower than the Internet plan speed because of factors we can’t control, like WiFi conditions and device capabilities.

Connection type

WiFi can be slower than a wired connection. Using an Ethernet cable to connect your laptop or desktop can increase your speeds. For speed tests over 100 Mbps, at a minimum, a Category 6 cable (Cat 6) cable is appropriate for more accurate results.

Router placement

Ensure your gateway, wireless router, or access point is in an open, central location. Avoid areas such as file cabinets, closets, and spots that may get covered.

Device limitations

Different devices can handle speed differently depending on the type of device, make, model, and age. The number of devices simultaneously on your network can also affect speed.

Older versions of browsers and operating systems

For the best results, be sure you’re using updated versions of browsers and operating systems.

What to look for in a business internet service provider

Comparison shopping on business internet providers can seem daunting (or at least tedious). Here are some guidelines to get you started.

First, begin by checking whether the provider in question is actually available in your area—naturally, this will be the easiest way to weed out internet service providers at the top of your search.

Next, consider the number of employees you have, the number of devices that require internet connection, and the bandwidth necessary for the kind of activities you need to perform, whether that’s video conferencing, extra-large downloads, or simply web browsing. And if your company needs more than one solution from your provider—like phone, fax, cable, or web hosting services—then it might be most efficient to choose a bundle.

If your office only uses the internet mostly for emails and other simple functions, you can certainly get away with a provider’s lowest bandwidth tier. But if you’re running a company with many employees, or if you absolutely rely on the internet to conduct your business, opt for the fastest speed available. And if you’re debating between packages, consider springing for the speed just above what you think you need. When it comes to your internet connection—which, for many businesses, is essentially their lifeline—it’s better to make room in your budget for foolproof speeds, rather than contending with constant disruptions in your daily operations (and, eventually, paying for that faster speed anyway).

The following internet service providers aren’t listed in any particular order. But based on a few key factors—including geographical availability, service speeds, customer reviews, pricing, and contract flexibility—we’ve deemed these five companies worth looking into first.

Verizon Fios Business

Verizon has been ranked the highest in customer satisfaction for small and medium businesses from J.D. Power for six years running—just one reason why Verizon Fios makes the list of the best business internet service providers.

Verizon Fios Business offers five internet plans, with download speeds ranging from 75 mbps up to 940 mbps. Prices range from $64.99 per month for the first year, then $69.99 per the month for the second; up to $214.99 per month for the first year, then $224.99 per month for the second. Fees and equipment charges aren’t included in those prices, however.

All Verizon’s contract lengths are two years, with an early cancellation fee of 35% of the base monthly charges for the remainder of the term.

On the downside, Verizon Fios Business is only available in certain metro areas in nine states on the East Coast. But they also offer several phone and internet bundles, some with the additional incentive of a Visa Prepaid Card of up to $200.

Pro: Great customer service and reliable connection.

Con: Service is limited to a handful of states on East Coast.

Spectrum Business

Spectrum Business offers three download speeds: 200 mbps, 400 mbps, and 940 mbps, with bundles starting at an incredibly affordable $44.99 per month. Pricing for other download speeds isn’t readily available on their website, however. You’ll have to enter your business’s address to find out which offers are available, and at which prices, in your area.

Perhaps the best feature of Spectrum Business’s internet services is that they’re all contract-free. Instead of the standard one- or two-year contracts, Spectrum Business charges customers on a month-to-month basis. So if you’re growing quickly and anticipate needing to upgrade, there’s no need to worry about locking yourself into a multiple-year deal, and potentially encountering early-cancellation fees. Plus, Spectrum services are available in 41 states, including Hawaii.

Do be aware, however, that Spectrum Business customer reviews are less than stellar.

Pro: Affordable pricing and widely available.

Con: Mixed reviews on customer service.

Comcast Business

Servicing 39 states across the country, Comcast Business Internet stands out from the pack for offering one of the highest-speed services you’ll find with their 1 gig (1,000 mbps) plan. Other than this “Blazing Speed” plan, Comcast Business offers four business internet tiers ranging from 25 mbps to 300 mbps. And signing up for their Comcast Business Connection Pro feature means that if your connection goes out, you’ll be automatically connected to a 4G LTE wireless backup.

Pricing-wise, you’ll need to provide your business’s address to receive a quote. We were also unable to find contract details, but reviewers have stated that Comcast has two-year-long contracts, and their early termination fees are hefty. Also be aware that their highest-speed plan might not be available everywhere.

Pro: Super-fast download speeds.

Con: Large early cancellation fee.

Although Frontier offers the slowest internet speeds on this list—ranging from just 7 to 40 mbps—their bundle prices are some of the lowest you’re likely to find. And if you’re a sole proprietor, have only a few employees, or simply don’t rely too heavily on your internet service (if you run a brick-and-mortar store, for instance), Frontier’s lower speeds may actually be just right for you.

On the lower range, Frontier’s Business Max + Voice Service bundle gets you 7 mbps internet speed, free installation, a free WiFi router, and a business phone for just $49.98 a month for a two-year contract. Their highest-tier bundle, the Business Extreme + Voice, gets you the same add-ons as the Business Max + Voice, but with a 30 mbps internet speed.

Pro: Reasonably priced bundles.

Con: Low internet speeds.

LLC Formation

AT&T Business

AT&T offers a few business internet packages at varying speeds and price points. Business owners who want the highest possible speeds with the most advanced features can opt for one of their three Dedicated Internet Service packages, which offers customers internet speeds of up to 400 mbps.

Of course, you will need to pay for those super-fast speeds. Prices for AT&T’s Dedicated Internet Service packages range from $993 per month to $1,770 per month, and contracts range from 24 to 36 months. Keep in mind, though, that offer availability and pricing will vary depending on where you’re located.

But if you don’t want to shell out $1,000+ for your internet, AT&T does offer lower-priced options, too. Look into their AT&T Wireless Internet product; for either $60 or $100 per month, users get either 50 or 100 GB of data with a 4G LTE wireless device.

Pro: Super-fast internet speeds are available.

Con: High-speed plans can be pricey.

First and foremost, the business internet provider that works best for your business is the provider that services your area—so always start your search by plugging in your business’s address. Keep in mind that providers’ offers and rates will vary according to your location, too.

On that note, it could be worth looking into regional business internet service providers in addition to the five marquee providers we mentioned here. It’s possible that they’ll offer internet speeds just as fast as the larger companies can, but at even better price points.

And if you’re wary about locking yourself into a years-long contract, make it a priority to find either a provider that offers a month-to-month contract, or that doesn’t incur punishing early termination fees. Depending on where you live, Xfinity offers up to seven different internet plans, and if you want the best price, you'll likely have to shackle yourself to a contract. Also, all prices in the chart reflect the automatic payment option. Otherwise, you'll need to add $10 monthly if you choose to forgo the paperless billing discount.

Out of all those plans, our favorite option is Xfinity's Connect More plan. While not the provider's cheapest option, it comes with double the speed of the Connect plan (300 megabits per second to the cheapest plan's 150Mbps) for just $10 more per month. That means your cost per Mbps with the Connect More plan is just over 8 cents, while the cheapest plan has a cost per Mbps of 11 cents. The Connect More plan is a better deal: it doesn't require you to sign a term contract and the price is good for two years, not just one.

Xfinity Internet review

Xfinity Internet is the home broadband service of Comcast, a major media and technology company. Early in 2023, Comcast began deploying DOCSIS 4.0 technology across its network, which allows over 40 markets to experience faster, multigigabit internet speed options . In May of this year, to coincide with the winding down of the Affordable Connectivity Program , Xfinity introduced NOW Internet , a prepaid, low-cost internet option.

What does all that mean for you? Xfinity is the nation's largest cable internet service provider , but does that automatically make it the best? It's easy to be impressed by the variety of internet speed plans, but my eyes glazed over a bit as I dug into the details. Is there such a thing as too many options?

With Xfinity, some plans require you to sign a one-year contract, others require a two-year commitment, and some require no contract at all. Beyond that, you'll need to contend with a data cap each month (again, not on all plans, but with some), and you can expect the price of your plan to increase over time, sometimes by more than 50% of the initial charge.

Headaches like that are par for the course with ISPs, making it difficult to tell if you're getting a good deal on your home's internet connection. Still, Xfinity is available to more than one-third of the country, and it's the fastest option available for many in that footprint. It's worth understanding what you might get, especially if you feel the need for speed and fiber isn't an option for your area or address.

Yep, Comcast offers slightly different rates depending on your area. Some differences are negligible, but some interesting variances can be found in the midrange plan. In the Central division, the Superfast plan (800Mbps) costs $70 monthly, but in the Northeast and West regions, it's $60 per month with differing Mbps upload speeds. Why so confusing? What gives?

"We're a regional provider and market and price our products based on individual local market dynamics," an Xfinity spokesperson told CNET. "That's why our costs can be different on a market-by-market basis."

These varying prices won't be of much concern or consequence to the average consumer. Considering Xfinity is available in 39 states, it may come into play for those moving from one part of the country to another and facing some significant sticker shock.

Breaking down Xfinity's pricing and value per Mbps

One big consideration with Xfinity plans is the sometimes stark contrast between your enticing promo price and a more costly regular rate. Most ISPs try to lure customers with competitive introductory prices that eventually balloon into a high monthly fee. That's not singular to Comcast Xfinity, but you might be surprised at how steep those price increases are sometimes. 

For example, if your household wanted a higher-tiered selection like the gigabit plan, you would initially pay $68 monthly (the average between the three regions). That's a competitive rate. Once your promo period passes, your monthly bill will jump to between $99 and $106. Even more dramatic is the jump for customers trying to keep their costs down with the Connect plan. It goes from a promo rate averaging $20 monthly to an average of $57 per month between the three regions. That's more than just a tiny blip: That's a hefty bounce of more than 180%!

Price jumps aside, Xfinity's regular rates -- the amount you'll pay each month after the cost goes up -- aren't all that unreasonable. For instance, the cost per Mbps of the regular rate across all plans is 36 cents, which is right about in the middle of what customers can expect to pay for cable internet service. It's not as low as Spectrum's 25-cents-per-Mbps standard cost but much more affordable than Cox's average 80 cents per Mbps for its regular rates. 

Comcast offers Xfinity subscribers the use of its xFi Gateway device, included on some plans and an additional monthly cost on others.

What type of internet connection is Xfinity Internet?

One detail you may have noticed in the plan tables is the discrepancy between the download and upload  speeds. This is because Xfinity Internet relies almost solely on hybrid fiber-coaxial cable connections to service subscribers' homes. HFC offers speeds much faster than those typically offered by DSL , satellite and fixed wireless networks. Still, due to the asymmetrical nature of the connection, your download speeds will always be much higher than your upload speeds. That's the main reason cable falls short of the performance of fiber-to-the-home networks.

Most of us pay closer attention to download speeds because they affect our ability to watch movies, listen to new music or stream our favorite shows without that nagging buffering. As more of us work from home, our ability to upload files is becoming more critical. For example,  Zoom recommends at least 2Mbps  of upload speed for single-screen usage of its platform. If you have two people on separate Zoom calls simultaneously or on an important work call while the kids are gaming online, you could run into issues quickly on some of these plans.

While most of its footprint features HFC, Xfinity offers an FTTH option with its top-speed plan, Gigabit Pro. That plan is available only in select homes equipped for it, so you'll need to request a site survey to ensure that serviceability is possible. Our Comcast sources also tell us that Xfinity is focusing on utilizing existing cable connections to achieve the symmetrical speeds we commonly associate with fiber rather than chasing after additional fiber deployments.

It's always a good idea to take some time to read the fine print. If you're planning out your budget, you want to ensure you've allotted the proper amount for your internet service. After all, it's not just about the starting monthly fee. 

Additional monthly fees

Regarding monthly fees, all the rates we show assume a $10-per-month discount for enrolling in automatic payments and paperless billing. If you choose not to go that route, you can expect an additional $10 monthly charge. Also, as mentioned above, your monthly rate will convert to a much higher regular rate after your promo rate ends. 

You'll also be charged another $15 per month for the xFi Gateway, a sleek modem-router combo exclusive to Xfinity that features free security measures, parental controls over your home's Wi-Fi and full tech support.

Or you could go with Comcast's xFi Complete, which includes unlimited data and a complimentary gateway upgrade after three years. That'll run you $25 per month, although Xfinity currently has a deal (on some plans) where your equipment is included for one or two years.

Finally, Xfinity allows you to use your own modem and router, but your equipment must be compatible with its service. Even if it is, you won't get the same technical support or device upgrades as the xFi. On the positive side, if you use your modem and router with the 400Mbps plan or above, you'll get a $10 monthly discount on your monthly bill in several of Comcast's regions. You'll be tethered to Xfinity's 1.2TB data cap -- unless you pay an additional $30 per month for unlimited data.

Xfinity's one-time installation fee

If you would like a technician to activate your service and verify all your home connections, then you'll incur a charge of $100. Xfinity does let you bypass this additional cost by selecting self-install, meaning it'll ship you a Getting Started kit, and you can activate the service on your own using the Xfinity app. That will cost you $15 in most markets, although some areas will see no charge.

Xfinity Internet data-usage plan

Sadly, Xfinity enforces a monthly data cap set at 1.2TB (1,200GB). Data limits don't apply to many customers in the Northeast market and certain plans across all three regions. It should be noted that several other ISPs -- including Frontier , Verizon and cable competitor  Spectrum -- offer unlimited data with your monthly fee. So Xfinity falls behind some of its challengers regarding data caps.

That said, what does 1.2TB of data get you? If you want to binge all four seasons of Stranger Things in glorious 4K, you can expect to use up to 7GB per hour of viewing time. The  latest report from OpenVault notes that the average monthly household bandwidth usage is approximately 550GB, so most customers should be able to stay under Xfinity's monthly data limit.

You can stream content from apps like Hulu on Comcast's Xfinity Flex, which also comes with a free subscription to Peacock Premium. 

If your household uses more than the given 1.2TB of data per month, you'll be charged an additional $10 for each increment of 50GB you exceed. The maximum monthly overage charge is $100. Xfinity does have an Unlimited Data Option , which will cost you an additional $30 a month, but it'll keep you well under that $100 monthly overage threshold. Still, it's only worth it on average if you incur at least three monthly overage charges.

Freebies, bundles and perks with Xfinity Internet

We've talked about the not-so-hidden additional fees you might expect to incur when signing up for internet service. You will also find freebies or enticing extras when you sign up for broadband with Xfinity. 

First, since Comcast Xfinity offers multiple services, you can potentially get another $10 to $30 a month off your internet bill for two years if you have an active, qualifying Xfinity Mobile line.

Next up, because Xfinity also offers TV, home security, voice and mobile services, several bundle deals can help you knock $10 or more a month off your regular bill. Like the tables above, the bundle deals vary by region. Still, all customers should have the option of nearly 10 types of bundles , ranging from Double Play options (internet plus another service) to premium bundle packages that include internet, TV and streaming, phone, and home security.

Speaking of bundles, Comcast also recently announced a new streaming bundle called Xfinity StreamSaver . It allows Xfinity Internet customers to sign up for a combo of Peacock Premium , Netflix Standard (with ads) and Apple TV Plus for $15 monthly. That's a savings of over 30% for the three streaming services.

Finally, you'll have access to over 20 million Xfinity hotspots nationwide. That means you'll have free Wi-Fi connectivity on the go.

Decent customer satisfaction scores for Xfinity Internet

Over the last few years, Comcast Xfinity has done relatively well in customer satisfaction metrics. When you look at the most recent American Customer Satisfaction Index numbers , Xfinity dropped just below the industry average, scoring 67 out of 100 points. That's a 1% drop from last year and puts it behind T-Mobile Home Internet , Verizon 5G Home Internet , AT&T , Cox and Spectrum .

Hopping over to the J.D. Power 2023 US Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study , Xfinity consistently ranked in the top third for overall customer satisfaction. The study uses a 1,000-point scale and breaks the country into four geographic regions: West, South, North Central and East. Xfinity did well overall, with an average score of 713 points across all of them. That was good enough for third place in the East (behind Verizon and Cox), third in the North Central (behind AT&T and CenturyLink ), fourth in the South (behind Google Fiber, AT&T and Frontier) and third in the West (behind AT&T and Frontier).

What's the bottom line on Xfinity Internet?

Comcast Xfinity is the largest cable internet provider in the country, with relatively strong customer service scores and gigabit service available across the entire coverage map. Addresses equipped with a fiber-to-the-home connection might even be able to sign up for speeds of 10,000Mbps, one of the faster residential internet plans you'll find. Unless a dedicated fiber provider offers service in your area, the odds are good that Xfinity is your fastest option.

Out of Xfinity's multitude of plans, our favorite pick is the Connect More tier at 300Mbps. Depending on your region, it usually runs between $30 and $35, only $10 more per month than the company's cheapest plan, but features double the speed. That's a sweet spot for consumers looking for a balance of value and speed.

Just watch out for the company's price hikes after your promo period. Although most providers will raise your bill after the first year, Xfinity's increases can be particularly steep, especially in the Northeast and Central divisions. You'll also need to contend with Xfinity's data cap, although at 1.2TB, most households should be able to manage just fine without going over. If all of that sounds workable, then Xfinity is well worth consideration.

Xfinity’s offers a variety of high-value plans that provide a lot of internet speed for the money. And as a cable ISP, its services are generally fast and reliable. The downside is that Xfinity charges all the usual extra fees, like equipment rental and early termination fees, and maintains the typical ISP policy annoyances, like data caps and price hikes. While, these fees and policies aren’t exactly budget-friendly, you’re likely to encounter them with other ISPs, as well.

Xfinity’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Xfinity has great plan variety when it comes to speed and your budget. Just keep in mind that Xfinity’s pricing varies by region.  

For the average household, we think the Fast plan delivers the most bang for your buck. At 400Mbps for $55 per month, it finds good balance between speed and price. In the age of gigabit plans, 400Mbps may not seem as impressive a speed as it once did, but even by modern usage standards, it’s a lot of bandwidth. With 400Mbps speeds, you could run 7 simultaneous 4k video streams  with enough bandwidth leftover for all your background processes and internet browsing. Generally, we recommend you have about 100Mbps of bandwidth for every member of your household.  

Larger families and heavy internet users could consider the Superfast internet plan. At $65 per month, it provides 800Mbps of internet speed, which is enough internet speed for just about anyone.

Those with tighter budgets can take a closer look at the Connect More plan, it’s $25 less per month than the Fast plan but provides half of the speed (200Mbps). 

Xfinity’s high-tier Gigabit and Gigabit Extra plans only make sense if you have the most extreme bandwidth needs. Think households with eight or more people or those who frequently need to download huge amounts of data.

Xfinity internet plans have a 1.2 TB data cap—plenty of data for the average customer. But if you do go over, Xinifty gives customers a pass for the first data overage. After that, you get hit with a $10 fee for every 50 GB over your cap, up to a maximum of $100 a month.

There are two ways you can get unlimited data with an Xfinity internet plan:

Xfinity’s installation fee is generally $100, though that is subject to change based on region. The equipment rental and other fees are standard for cable internet providers.

At $100, Xfinity’s install fee is something you want to try to avoid by opting to self-install. Xfinity’s equipment is pretty good, and it has some attractive offers and features that make renting equipment tempting. Regarding contracts, there isn’t much flexibility—most plans require at least a 12-month contract.

For $100, Xfinity sends a technician to your residence to connect your home to its network and set up your equipment. If your residence already has an active Xfinity internet connection, you can just self-install for free.

Self-installation with Xfinity is easy. All you need to do is connect your equipment to power and connect an active coaxial cable to the back of the modem. From there, the Xfinity app walks you through the rest of the process.

Xfinity equipment

Most new Xfinity customers who decide to rent their equipment will get an XFi internet gateway, a modem/router combo that runs on the DOCSIS 3.1. protocol. The XB-8 has tri-band Wi-Fi, four Ethernet ports, and advanced security. It also integrates well with the Xfinity App’s control and troubleshooting features.

Xfinity bundles its equipment rental and unlimited data feature with the xFi complete add-on, which costs $25 a month on top of your regular rates.

Is Xfinity right for you?

While there are many factors to consider when purchasing a new internet service, speed and price are among the most important, and Xfinity scores top-marks for both. And because it’s such a big ISP, Xfinity has a lot features, options, and bundles while maintaining a decent level of quality in it’s services. Value-wise, Xfinity internet is worth the money.

Xfinity may not be the best fit if you’re looking for a flexible contract, as it doesn’t have month-to-month options for its standard internet plans. Xfinity does offer a prepaid internet plan, but it’s slow, pricey, and requires a modem purchase—not a great deal.

With several high-speed internet plans at different price points, Xfinity is a good internet provider option. It’s coverage is widespread and it offers TV, phone and home security bundles, which makes it convenient.

Xfinity’s internet is fast and reliable, but advertised prices can be misleading. Xfinity often has deals and promotions for plans that require a one- or two-year contract. Founded in 1963, Comcast Corp is the largest multinational telecommunications company in the nation. In 2010, Comcast introduced Xfinity, the brand name for its internet, TV, phone and home security service.

With over 32 million customers in 2022, Comcast Xfinity is the most-used broadband provider in the U.S. and one of the best internet companies around. 

It’s available in 35 states, including Washington D.C., and in many parts of the country, it’s the only top-speed internet provider available. The company mostly utilizes coaxial cables for connectivity, which facilitates fast downloads. Uploads, however, are significantly slower. 

Xfinity offers plans covering a wide range of speed and connectivity, ranging from minimal connectivity for a handful of devices to lightning-fast cable connections with unlimited device connections.

Plans start at $19.99 per month for new customers, but that price is only locked in for the first year. At that point, your monthly bill will go up. This is a common issue with Comcast Xfinity internet plans.

There is a data cap of 1.2TB per month. If you exceed that amount, Xfinity will charge a fee. Luckily, 1.2 TB per month is more than sufficient for the average internet user.

Comcast Xfinity also offers TV, phone and home security services, which can be bundled with its internet plans.

Internet + TV Deals

Xfinity customers can bundle internet and TV services. For an extra set amount per month, users can stream live sports, movies and shows when they sign up for an internet plan.

The exact price depends on where you live and how many channels you want. In Washington, for example, it’s an extra $20 a month for 10+ TV channels and an extra $50 a month for 125+ channels.

Home Phone as an Add-On

Add home phone service to your Comcast Xfinity plan with Xfinity Voice. You can transfer your current home phone number to a new address or get a new one.

Xfinity home phone service allows you to see caller ID on your TV, manage service through the Xfinity Connect Web Portal, and block spam calls easily. You can also check your home phone voicemail from anywhere as long as you have access to your web portal account.

Xfinity Mobile

Xfinity offers a mobile phone service, Xfinity Mobile, with plans ranging from $30 per month per line to $50 per month per line . You can also opt for Xfinity Mobile’s “By the Gig” plan, which starts at $15 per month .

Xfinity internet customers have the option to bundle internet and mobile plans to save money. But users should keep in mind that these deals usually come with contracts and prices will likely increase after some time.

Home Security

In addition to internet, TV, and phone plans, Xfinity offers a home security plan. It has a Self Protection plan for households and a Professional Monitoring plan for businesses. 

While you don’t need Xfinity internet or TV to get Xfinity home security, bundling the services is beneficial because your devices will be connected to the same network. That allows for you to easily manage cameras, alarms and any other equipment.

Xfinity Internet Plans

Xfinity commonly offers six different internet plans. However, plans, prices, speeds and offers can vary depending on where you live. 

Connect Plan – A Basic Internet Plan

Xfinity’s Connect internet plan is good for up to four devices at once, so it’s ideal for individuals and small families. You can still download music and photos, stream TV and videos and join video conferences (like Zoom).

That said, if everyone in the house tries to stream or download at the same time, you’ll experience lagging. This plan is best for more casual internet users or people who don’t need to connect several devices at once.

Connect More Plan – The Perfect Family Plan

The Connect More plan from Xfinity can handle up to five devices at once. With maximum download speeds of 200 Mbps, users can download shows and movies quickly and stream high-quality videos on multiple devices. This plan can also accommodate multiplayer gaming.

For these reasons, we found that the Connect More plan was best for families, particularly with people who regularly use the internet to stream, game, join video meetings and more. 

Fast Plan – Downloading Made Easy

If you’re regularly downloading large files, like high-resolution photos and TV shows, the Fast Plan is for you. With 400 Mbps download speeds, you can connect up to eight devices at once and stream on multiple devices.

Superfast Plan – Perfect for Large Households

Xfinity’s Superfast plan offers download speeds of up to 800 Mbps. Up to 11 devices can connect at a time without lagging on this plan. It’s great for quick downloads, streaming on multiple devices at once and multiplayer gaming. 

Because of the high internet speeds and the capabilities that come with it, this plan is perfect for large households full of people who need to use the internet on a regular basis.

Gigabit – The Plan for Professionals

With 1,000 Mbps download speeds, Xfinity’s Gigabit internet plan is perfect for heavy internet users and professionals. 

Under this plan, users can connect over 12 devices at once. Multiplayer gaming, high-speed streaming, and large downloads are possible with this plan.

Gigabit Extra – Internet for Ultra-Connected Households

If you want to virtually eliminate lag times no matter how many devices are connected, sign up for Xfinity’s Gigabit Extra internet plan with maximum download speeds of 1,200 Mbps. Compared to similar internet plans, Xfinity plans are affordable. The company is constantly advertising deals, bundles and other ways to save money. Before buying, users should know that these deals come with a time limit, usually one or two years, depending on the deal.

Xfinity Internet Coverage

Comcast Xfinity Internet is available in a majority of the continental U.S. with coverage in 35 states, including Washington D.C.

There is no Xfinity coverage in Puerto Rico, Montana, Iowa, North Dakota, Alaska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Hawaii, Idaho, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma or Rhode Island.

Download speeds for Xfinity internet plans range from 75 Mbps to 2,000 Mbps. Upload speeds are significantly slower at around 35 Mbps for each plan. 

While its upload speeds are relatively slow, they’re sufficient for most tasks. Users can still live stream, upload a YouTube video or join HD video calls easily, but uploading a long, high-quality video will take some extra time.

Xfinity requires contracts for their plans. Depending on the plan you purchase, your contract will be one or two years. After that time, your plan is subject to change, meaning you might experience a different internet speed and a bigger bill. To stay on top of your internet plan, set a reminder to check in and call Xfinity every year.

Xfinity users can also opt to rent equipment from the provider if they don’t have their own modem or Wi-Fi router. The Xfinity Gateway is the provider’s internet modem and Wi-Fi router in one. 

For the contract term period, customers can get the Xfinity Gateway equipment at no cost when they sign up for the Connect More, Fast, Superfast, Gigabit, Gigabit Extra, or 2X Gigabit plans. Just note that the price will increase to $15 per month once your 1- or 2-year contract is up.

For Connect customers, the Xfinity Gateway costs $15 per month on top of the monthly fee for the plan.

Xfinity offers numerous bundles and deals , depending on where you live. Customers can get deals and discounts for bundling their internet service with Xfinity TV or phone service. There are also discounts available for bundling Xfinity Internet with the company’s home security service.

Xfinity also offers a $10 per month discount for customers who sign up for autopay and paperless billing.

Xfinity has a great selection of support options, including a bot-powered live chat, support phone service, community forum, blog and helpful information on its website. Even so, customers give Xfinity a low rating. As of January 2024, the company has a 1.4 on ConsumerAffairs, a 1.2 on TrustPilot and a 3.8 on Google.

We found that navigating the Xfinity website was confusing, but doable. To begin the process of setting up Xfinity Internet, you’ll need to input your address. This will give you specific plans for your area. The pricing and plan types may be different depending on where you live, so make sure to put in an accurate address.

By entering your address, you can also access location-specific deals and bundles.

Because Xfinity offers so many plans and services, navigating the website can be confusing. Unless you have the time and energy to sit down at your computer to go through each option, we think it’s easier to call Xfinity customer service or head to a retail store to determine exactly what you need.

But if you’re not worried about scoring the best deal or taking advantage of promotions, signing up for a plan is easy enough on the Xfinity website.

Users should be aware that the price Xfinity gives you before checkout may be deceiving. Once you click to sign up, you’ll get the option to add on the necessary equipment, which costs $15 per month . This equipment is free for some plans for the contract term (one or two years) and you’ll need it if you don’t already have your own modem or router.

We like the fact that Xfinity offers so many plans at different price points. We also love that the company offers several promotions and bundles so that everyone can get affordable internet tailored to their needs. 

While Xfinity doesn’t have the highest internet speeds on the market, they are more than fast enough for a majority of internet users. Plus, Xfinity covers a lot of ground, so it’s a solid internet option for many Americans.

We found that Xfinity Internet has confusing pricing models, with monthly bills often increasing sharply after a year or two of service. The deals and promotions are enticing, but they’re still expensive in the long run.

Offering discounts and promo rates instead of straightforward plans can be misleading.

Xfinity Internet vs. CenturyLink

One of the key differences between Xfinity and CenturyLink internet is that CenturyLink uses DSL and fiber connections, while Xfinity provides cable internet (with a fiber option for a few select markets).

Unlike Xfinity, CenturyLink doesn’t use promo pricing and there are no price increases after a year or two—there also aren’t any contracts with CenturyLink.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Xfinity and AT&T internet is the connection type . AT&T offers DSL service in addition to high-speed fiber internet. Xfinity mostly relies on coaxial cables to provide internet.

While fiber internet is typically significantly faster than any other type of internet connection, cable internet is more reliable.

You can’t always pick from a wide range of home internet providers (depending on your location), but even if your choice is limited, you still want to select the right one. From pricing to speed, support, and contract plans, picking the right broadband provider can make a real difference to the service you receive. Here are our favorites.

AT&T Fiber

AT&T offers a range of affordable internet plans starting from $55 a month for up to 300Mbps download and upload speeds, to its flagship Fiber 5000 package, which gets you up to 5,000Mbps download and upload — though it does come at a $250 a month premium. The data caps on its lower-end packages are generous, with 1.5TB for everything up to 50Mbps, and then unlimited data from 100Mbps and up.

For additional value, you can bundle TV and cellular services, as well as internet security software and services. You can use AT&T hardware if you wish, with options for professional installations, but you can also use your own cable modem and router if you prefer, letting you get greater performance or features without having to pay twice for hardware.

AT&T is available in 21 states, offering strong coverage, but it does leave a lot of people unable to use its service. For those that do, though, if you find don’t like what AT&T offers, you can always switch to a different company, since its plans don’t have a contract locking you in for a set period.

Google Fiber

If you want the fastest fiber internet connection possible, Google Fiber is the service provider for you. It is only available in 16 states, and even then it’s only certain cities that can access it. But if you can, the performance available is unprecedented, and even impressively affordable, too.

Google only offers Gigabit+ internet packages and has symmetrical download and upload speeds. Its lowest-end offering is 1Gbps for $70 a month, but you can go up to 8Gbps in select locations for just $150 a month. You also get a terabyte of free cloud storage with all Google Fiber packages, and they include a router and optional mesh extenders.

Although availability is extremely limited, Google is expanding its coverage through 2024, so even if you can’t use Google Fiber yet, that may change in the near future.

Verizon Fios

Verizon is one of the most widely available internet service providers, with some presence in almost all 50 states. While that can be a 5G connectivity option, that’s a very viable way to get online with Verizon, though it also offers a range of fiber and DSL packages.

Packages start at $50 for new customers, though existing Verizon mobile plan subscribers can get packages as low as $35 per month, making it worthwhile to bundle your subscriptions together. There are also cable TV packages, streaming service packages, and options for free gifts with a signup, like a pair of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Verizon offers packages up to 2,000Mbps upload and download for $110 a month, making it an affordable high-speed option. All plans come with no annual contracts or data caps, so you can download or stream as much as you like. You get a free setup and installation with the Gigabit+ packages, too, and there are no hardware fees either. Router rental is included in the monthly charge.

Finding good internet in a rural location is tricky, but if you don’t want to rely on a satellite connection, Kinetic can often offer a fast and affordable alternative. Its cheapest packages start at just $40 for up to 300Mbps download and upload speeds, including a free cable modem rental for a year (just remember you’ll start paying for it the year after). There’s no data cap and no annual contract, so you can leave whenever you like. Kinetic’s packages top out at 8,000Mbps, which is much more expensive, but has limited availability to a few major cities.

Kinetic offers coverage across 18 states, with a main focus on the East and Southeast U.S., but particularly focuses on more rural regions where it’s harder to get traditional internet connectivity. If you find you aren’t covered by Kinetic, check out the 5G packages available through Verizon and AT&T.

T-Mobile Internet

If you want an internet service provider that offers straightforward high-speed internet without the bells and whistles and complicated packaging, T-Mobile is the provider for you. It doesn’t offer the fastest fiber connection speeds, but its simple package options make the signup and setup process easier than most.

Your speed will be dependent on your location, but T-Mobile guarantees a 25Mbps connection anywhere — T-Mobile has near complete coverage of all 50 states with 4G and 5G connectivity — and typical connection speeds are between 72Mbps and 250Mbps. That means there are no gigabit speed options, but outside of those doing the largest downloads and uploads, that’s not strictly necessary.

Home internet packages start at $50 a month for unlimited data and a 5G Wi-Fi modem/router, or you can pay $70 a month for the higher-performance version, which also includes video support for your connected devices. There are options for phone line inclusion, and you can bolt on additional features like home backup services if you want, but there’s no annual contract and no data cap to worry about.

Comcast Xfinity

If you’re looking to get online for the lowest possible price, Comcast Xfinity is the most affordable of the lot. Its standard packages start at $20 a month with a $15-a-month modem rental fee, but it also offers a special Internet Essentials plan for low-income households that gets you 50Mbps internet for just $10 a month. These super-low-cost plans don’t have a datacap, or a cancellation fee, and there’s no monthly rental fee, either. If you live in one of the 35 states that Xfinity operates in and you qualify, it’s a super-affordable way to get online.

For even those who don’t, though, you can get speeds up to 2,000Mbps for $120 a month, though that availability is dependent on your region. There is a monthly modem rental fee if you use the included hardware. You can use your own modem and router, but then Xfinity places a 1.2TB data cap, which isn’t ideal.
