1089 Words Short Essay on importance of social service

Man is primarily a member of a social community . He should not only be concerned about himself but also for the welfare and development of society as a whole. It is truly said that “Jana-Seva” is “Janardhana-Seva”. The feeling of self-satisfaction that comes when one sees the unshed tears of joy in the eyes of one whose hunger has been appeased, whose thirst has been allayed and whose needs are fulfilled is indeed heavenly.

The service rendered by an individual or an institution to improve the social conditions of society is called ‘social service’. This service is rendered on humanitarian considerations and without any motive of profit. Only those people to whom the interests of society are more important than their personal interests come forward to render social service.

Social service is based on the ideal of brotherhood of man. It is a natural impulse to help men in distress. It is a noble impulse. It cannot be rendered without an element of self-sacrifice. One has to spend time and energy for it. Nowadays man is concerned only about his own welfare. Obligations, noble thoughts, duties towards society have been pushed to the background as the centre-stage is occupied by a rat-race for materialistic trifles.

In a country like India, social service occupies an important place. It is specifically stated in Article 38 of our Constitution that “the State shall strive to promote the welfare of the people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may, a social order in which justice-social, economic and political-shall include all the institutions of the national life”. In five decades of planning, the social welfare services were aimed at the welfare and the development of children, women and the physically and socially handicapped of the society.

Social service is not confined to isolated deeds and words of charity towards the disabled, helpless or the poverty stricken. Doctors can serve by attending to the ailing without being influenced by thoughts of pecuniary gains. Engineers and contractors can serve humanity by doing their jobs efficiently and diligently, without being clouded by greed. Businessmen can do social service if they pursue their work honestly as a vocation. Public servants will be of great service to humanity if the evils of corruption and aimless drift are rooted out and replaced with the seeds of the true spirit of service nurtured by good ethics and strong human values. Politicians can serve by substituting integrity and patriotism for acts of self- preservation. So, for doing social service the only thing which is important is the strong will to do something for the betterment of the society.

The social services cover for children includes integrated development of children, care and protection to abandoned, neglected, unwanted, destitute children, setting up creches for working and ailing mothers’ children, nutrition programmes etc. A National Children’s Fund was constituted by the Government during the International Year of the Child in 1979. India has also been associated with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) since 1949.

Programmes are being implemented for the early detection and treatment, education, training and rehabilitation of disabled persons, namely, the blind, the deaf, the orthopedically handicapped, the mentally retarded, spastics and the leprosy cured persons.

Social welfare measures at the Government level touch only a fringe of the problem. It is not possible for the Government to reach out to every person who needs help. Therefore, voluntary organisations can and should supplement the Government’s efforts in a big way in this noble task. In view of the illiteracy, ignorance, superstitions and social evils prevalent in our country, the need for social service has assumed a certain urgency. Of course, social service cannot be a whole time activity. It is indeed enough if people with missionary zeal devote 2 or 3 hours a day for social service. Students can take to social service during their summer vacations. Similarly, retired persons can be of great help. Housewives are normally free from their day’s work by 12 P.M. They too can volunteer for social service.

There are a number of areas in which social service is called for on a mass scale. First of all, groups of educated people can go out to villages and educate the illiterate. In India about 35% of the people are illiterate. Even our modest efforts can contribute to the removal of illiteracy from our country.

Our villages lack sanitation. Social workers can meet the villagers and educate them about the need for sanitation and cleanliness. Nearly 72.22 per cent of India’s population lives in villages. If our villages look neat and clean, our country will acquire a new look.

The death rate is much higher in villages because of the lack of medical facilities. Villagers need to be enlightened and encouraged to protect their children from deadly diseases by having them inoculated. Inoculations give unmunity from diseases like typhoid, whooping cough, diphtheria, leprosy, T.B., polio etc. When Government officials approach villagers, the villagers distrust their claims. Social workers can create a better psychological effect on villagers and explain to them the advantages of inoculations.

India’s population is growing at an alarming rate. It has already crossed the 1,027 million mark and India has become the second- most populous country in the world. Social workers can do great service by putting across to villagers the message of family planning.

In cities and towns, slums are coming up due to large scale migration of people from villages to cities. These slums lack sanitation. There are no civic amenities at all. Life in slums is miserable. People living in the slums indulge in distillation of illicit liquor, sale of narcotic drugs and other criminal or antisocial activities. There is a dire need to launch cleanliness drives in these slums. Special programmes should also be undertaken in these areas so that people who have gone astray can be brought back to the right track.

In our country, Mother Teresa rendered great social service by serving thousands of poor, needy and destitute people. She set an example of what social service can do for the suffering humanity. Voluntary organisations like the Bharat Sewak Samaj, Sadhu Sewak Samaj, Servants of the People Society, Ramakrishna Mission, Arya Samaj and many other social welfare and voluntary organisations are doing a lot of good work for people in different spheres of life.

Let each man uphold the ideal of “Help ever, hurt never” as his motto and contribute his bit to make the world order politically powerful, socially stable, economically efficient and spiritually strong.

my idea of social service essay

English Summary

Social Service Essay

Today social service is considered to be an important part of Education. Gandhiji outlined a programme of social work to be done by the student during their long vacation.

“To serve our villages is to work for Swaraj. All else is an idle dream,” said Gandhiji. Our villages present a sorry state of affairs Ignorance is the watchword of our villages, superstitions are their backbone and backwardness is their keynote.

One of the most useful forms of social service is to educate the illiterate. We have still about 60% of illiterate people. 3R’s may be imparted to children during the day-time and night schools may be opened to teach the adults who could not enjoy the benefit of regular education during their younger days.

Another aspect of the social service is to improve the health of the people, especially of the villagers. The villagers shall have to be taught how to keep their houses and lanes neat and clean and maintain themselves in perfect health and strength. There must be a proper drainage system in order to remove insanitary conditions prevailing in our villages.

Again, in a country where most of the villages cannot get even two square meals a day, no social service will be more welcome than that which goes to increase their income. This can be done by teaching some craft.

Gandhiji’s programme of Khadi and the revival of cottage industries must be tried with profit. The villagers must be kept busy, especially after the harvest time. They should be taught some spare time occupations to supplement their income.

Besides the above, there are other kinds of social service which can be rendered for the betterment of the poorer sections of society. They can, for instance, be taught that litigation and extravagant habits are bad and that a life of communal harmony and mutual goodwill is always better.

Social service can also be done in cities at critical moments. An epidemic may break out. The scarcity of food may result in famine. Heavy rains may give rise to floods and the earthquake may cause destruction.

At such critical times the highest form of social service is to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to help the needy, to protect the weak and to give shelter to the homeless.

At the time of partition of the country and Bangla Desh’s conflict with Pakistan crores of refugees came to India. Our young men and women rendered very useful service to rehabilitate them.

Today social service has been made a part of education. The N.S.S. Worker, N.C.C. cadets the Boy Scouts and the Girls Guides are busy in making roads, digging canals, cleaning tanks and village wells, repairing School buildings and doing a hundred other jobs. Students and citizens give Shram Dan as their contribution to the building of free India.

It is clear that the processes of economic and social change create new prospects and new hazards for every generation. This requires constant adjustment on the part of the social services. Political considerations and levels of resources largely determine how social services are organized and how responsibility is apportioned between the statutory, voluntary, and private sectors. Even in prosperous societies the scale and diversity of needs is such that the formal social services are obliged to utilize and support informal systems of social care and mutual aid. The idea of the welfare state as a universal provider for largely passive populations has never had any reality in fact nor much serious support in political theory. There is widespread evidence of a general trend toward the development of closer links between the formal and informal systems of social care, although this might lead to further variation in social welfare services as societies become more sensitive to their indigenous cultural diversity and develop their own responses to change.

Essay on “Social Service” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Social Service

Essay No. 01

There is a close relationship between society and man. They are interdependent. If there are no men there is no society and man in turn cannot exist without society. Man is a social animal. He has to depend on society of the fulfillment of his desires. It is society that gives him law and order, roads, hospitals. In return it is the duty of a man to do something for the good of society and also in himself through sincere social service.

All citizens should realize their duty towards society and should try to inculcate the spirited of social service among children. Red-cross, scouting, N.C.C. and A.C.C. should be encouraged in educational institutions. Social service camps should be frequently organized at convenient times. These activities provide a good opportunity for students to develop the habit of doing social service.

India needs citizens who can volunteer their services for the good of the nation. The greatest evil that is cutting into the vitals of the country is illiteracy. Govt. alone cannot remove it. If all educated persons, specially students and teachers, devote themselves to this work the problem will be solved very soon in long vacations they can go to the villages in small groups in order to teach the villagers how to read and write.

The villagers suffer from diseases due to their ignorance. They generally think that diseases are the result of the anger of gods. Therefore instead of taking proper medicines they begin to worship some god or goddess. It will be a treat social service it se can enlighten them on this subject. Lecture with the help of magic lantern and free distribution of medicines can help the villagers a lot. Similarly we may go top hospitals and health centers and do some service to the suffering people.

There is much scope for service at fairs, festivals and other gatherings. Restoring lost children and lost property to the right persons will be very helpful. Providing first aid, making water arrangements and controlling the crowd prove at the end of the months calamities one should be ready to the help the society as much as one can.

Govt. is trying to improve the economic conditions of the country. We can do a lot of social service in this respect. Through occasional social service all our plans will be useless if we do not have the spirit of social service in us. Let us spread the idea of social service as far as possible and thereby help in building a happier and more beautiful India.

Essay No. 02

It is rightly observed that service of mankind is the service of God. It is the primary duty of man to serve the needy, less privileged and down-trodden fellow-beings. We must not selfish. We must look to the welfare of those who live around us. Our prosperity is of no avail if the people near us live a life of want and misery. We all are the equal inheritors of the gifts and wealth of nature. Those who roll in riches should give food to the hungry, clothes to the naked and shelter to the hopeless. Those who are sick and physically disabled should be helped according to their needs. Some people are compelled to commit crimes because of poverty. Some die because they have no money for medical treatment. We must become their benefactors. While doing social service, we must not be swayed by the narrowness of feelings. All should be treated alike. Moreover, one should not have any ulterior motive while serving others.

The Importance of Community Service

Table of contents, fostering empathy and compassion, enhancing skill development, cultivating social responsibility, creating lasting change, connecting education to reality, building character and values, fostering lifelong commitment.

  • Conclusion The importance of community service is an embodiment of humanity's capacity for compassion, empathy, and positive change. For students, community service offers a transformative journey that extends beyond the classroom, enriching their lives and the lives of those they touch. Through fostering empathy, enhancing skill development, cultivating social responsibility, creating lasting change, connecting education to reality, building character and values, and fostering a lifelong commitment, community service equips students with the tools and mindset needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected and complex world. As students engage in acts of service, they contribute to the creation of a more just, equitable, and compassionate society. They become agents of positive change, embodying the belief that even small actions can have a profound impact on the lives of others. Tips for Writing a Standout Community Service Essay

←6 Diversity College Essay Examples

How to Write the “Why This Major” College Essay→

Through your college applications process, you’re likely to come across the term “community service” many times. In fact, you may be asked to write an essay about it. This post will cover the specifics of a community service essay and how to go about writing one, including what to cover and common mistakes to avoid.

What is a Community Service Essay?

You may encounter the community service essay as you’re writing your supplemental essays for college. These are school-specific prompts that only go to the college that requests them, unlike the personal statement , which goes to every school you apply to. Not all schools require community service essays, but several do. It’s also a common requirement for scholarship applications, especially if it’s a school-specific merit scholarship.

The community service essay is an essay that describes the initiatives you have taken outside of the classroom to benefit your community. In a 2018 survey of 264 admissions leaders across the US, 58% said that community service is a tie-breaker between students who are otherwise equally qualified. The community service essay offers you the opportunity to shine light on the work you have done to make an impact on the world and people around you, and is an additional way to help you stand out among other applicants.

Approaching the Community Service Essay

Understand the essay requirements  .

As with any essay, it’s important to first understand what is expected of your essay. For a start, elements to pay attention to include:

  • Length requirements
  • Focus or subject of the essay prompt
  • Organization of the essay

Although all community service essays ultimately have the same purpose of having you describe your local service activities, they can come with different types of prompts. Below are three sample prompts. Note the differences in topic specificity, length requirements, and breadth of the prompt.

From the CGCS – Bernard Harris Scholarship Program:

Please describe a meaningful volunteer or community service experience, including what you learned from participating.

From the University of California Application :

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? (350 words).

From the Equitable Excellence Scholarship:

Describe your outstanding achievement in depth and provide the specific planning, training, goals, and steps taken to make the accomplishment successful. Include details about your role and highlight leadership you provided. Your essay must be a minimum of 350 words but not more than 600 words.

Brainstorming for your community service essay

Once you have an understanding of what is required of the specific you are to write, the next step is to brainstorm ideas for a specific topic. If you have various community-engaged service experiences under your belt, consider the following before you finalize your decision.

The best topics:

Are substantial in length and scope. It’s better to cover a long-term commitment than a one-off afternoon at the food pantry or animal shelter.

Are transformative or inspiring. Although community service is “others”-oriented, colleges are looking to learn more about you. The ideal community service essay topic should be an experience that changed or challenged your perspective, and was ultimately fulfilling.

Illustrate personal qualities or passions that you want to highlight. Given the specific prompt, and taking the rest of your application into consideration, which personal interests do you want to highlight? Which activity illuminates the personal quality that you want to bring attention to?

These are all elements to consider before you begin writing your essay.

Tips for Writing Your Community Service Essay

1. include anecdotes.

Anecdotes are a great way to begin your essay, not only as a way to grab your reader’s attention, but by launching right into the experience of your service activity. You can start with a line about a particularly busy afternoon at the orphanage, or a morning cleaning up the streets after a storm, or the sense of accomplishment you felt when you watched a dog under your care at the animal shelter get adopted.

2. Show, don’t tell

We’re sure you’ve heard this axiom of general writing before, but it applies to college essays just as much as with any other piece of writing. Opt for evocative examples over plain explaining whenever possible. Take this sentence: “There was a lot of food waste at our school cafeteria.” It’s not nearly as powerful as this description: “I peered into the tall, gray trash cans to inspect the mountain of Styrofoam trays and discarded food. There were countless pizza crusts, globs of green beans, and unopened cartons of milk.”

Anyone could write the first sentence, and it’s not a unique experience. In the second description, we’re shown the scene of the writer’s lunchroom. We get a peek into their perspective and life, which makes the writing more vivid and relatable. Aim to bring your reader into your world as much as possible.

3. Share your responsibilities and accomplishments.

The more tangible your community service activities feel to the reader, the more powerful your essay will be. Concretize your work by stating the basic details of what kind of work you did and what your duties involved, where it was based, when you began working, and the amount of time you spent working.

Be sure to quantify your work and accomplishments when possible; it’s better to say your fundraiser yielded 125 books than “a large number” of books. It’s important to also elaborate on why the work you did matters. Why was it important? Did the books you collected or purchased after the fundraiser expand the library of the local orphanage that they already had, or did it offer the children easy access to books that wasn’t available previously? Be specific and detailed.

4. Highlight what you learned and how you’ll use those lessons moving forward.

Towards the end of your essay, you’ll want to share how you benefited from the community service work you did. This is an important part of the essay, because it shows how you are able to distill your experiences to applicable lessons in your own life.

Think of this section in two potential parts: skills you learned, and personal development. Did you gain any hard skills, such as public speaking, poster design, or funds management? Then think about how you developed as an individual. Are you more empathetic or patient now?

Things to Avoid in Your Community Service Essay

1. don’t list out everything that happened..

You want to keep your essay well-structured and concise. This isn’t a résumé, or a play-by-play of the entire experience. Stick to the most telling details and anecdotes from your experience.

2. Avoid using a pretentious or privileged tone.

Humility goes a long way, and entitlement can be smelled from afar. The purpose of this essay is not to paint yourself as a savior of any kind, but rather to show what’s important to you in your non-academic life, and how you approach solving real-world and interpersonal problems.

3. Avoid clichés.

It may be tempting to quote famous people, but doing so can easily seem like a shortcut, plus it shows little of who you are. Try also to steer clear of trite and vague life lesson lines such as “I learned that people can be happy with so little,” or “I learned the importance of giving back.” Not only do they carry a tone of privilege, they are also sweeping general conclusions and don’t convey anything specific of what you learned.

Are you interested in performing community service? Do you want examples of service projects you can do? Community service is a great way to help others and improve your community, and it can also help you gain skills and experience to include on your resume and college applications.

Read on for dozens of community service ideas to help you get started volunteering.

What Is Community Service?

Community service is work done by a person or group of people that benefits others. It is often done near the area where you live, so your own community reaps the benefits of your work. You do not get paid to perform community service, but volunteer your time.

Community service can help many different groups of people: children, senior citizens, people with disabilities, even animals and the environment. Community service is often organized through a local group, such as a place of worship, school, or non-profit organization, but you can also start your own community service projects.

Many people participate in community service because they enjoy helping others and improving their community. Some students are required to do community service in order to graduate high school or to receive certain honors. Some adults are also ordered by a judge to complete a certain number of community service hours.

Why Should You Participate in Community Service?

There are numerous benefits to participating in community service, both for yourself and others. Below are some of the most important benefits of volunteering:

  • Gives you a way to help others
  • Helps improve your community
  • Can help strengthen your resume and college applications
  • Can be a way to meet new friends
  • Often results in personal growth
  • Gives you a way to gain work experience and learn more about certain jobs

How Should You Use This List?

This list of over one hundred community service examples is organized by category , so if you're particularly interested in working with, say, children or animals, you can easily find community service activities more related to your interests.

In order to use this list most effectively, read through it and make note of any community service ideas that match your interests and that you may want to participate in. Some considerations to keep in mind are:

Is there a specific group of people or cause you are passionate about? Look for projects that relate to your passion and interests. You may also just want to perform particular community service activities that allow you to do hobbies you enjoy, like baking or acting, and that's fine too.

Perhaps you don't have enough time to regularly devote to community service. In that case, it may be better to look for opportunities that only occur once or sporadically, such as planning special events or helping build a house.

Some people prefer to participate in community service activities that have a quantifiable impact, for example, activities where you know the specific number of kids you tutored, dollars you raised, or cans of food you collected. This is in contrast to activities that don't have such clear numbers, such as creating a garden or serving as a volunteer lifeguard. Some people prefer quantifiable activities because they feel they look stronger on college applications, or because they simply enjoy knowing their exact impact on the community.

Many community service activities can help you gain skills. These skills can range from teaching to medicine to construction and more. If there is a particular skill you'd like to learn for future classes, jobs, or just out of personal interest, you may want to see if there is a community service activity that helps you learn that skill.

Now that you know what your options are for community service, you can take the following steps to start getting involved:

#1: Look over your interests: Which activities seem most appealing to you? Were they mostly in one particular category, like children or the environment? If so, that's a good starting place for choosing specific organizations to contact.

#2: Figure out how much time you can devote to community service: Are you available for two hours every week? Are you not free on a regular basis but can volunteer for an entire weekend now and then?

Think about transportation as well and how you'll be able to get to different locations. Knowing this information will help you choose which community service projects to pursue, and it's helpful information for volunteer coordinators to know.

#3: Do some research to see what projects you can do in your community: Check at your school, place of worship, or town hall for more information on volunteering. You can also contact the place where you'd like to perform your community service, such as a particular animal shelter or nursing home, and ask if they take volunteers.

#4: Start volunteering! This list ranges from small projects that you can complete on your own in a few hours, to much larger projects that will take more time and people. If you find a project you can start on your own, do it!

If you want to do a project where you'll need more resources or people, check around your community to see if a similar program already exists that you can join. If not, don't be afraid to start your own! Many organizations welcome new volunteers and community service projects.

28 people acquitted of money laundering in Panama Papers, Operation Car Wash case

Panamanian judge says evidence 'not sufficient and conclusive' to convict defendants.

A judge has acquitted 28 people accused of money laundering in an international case known as the Panama Papers, including the co-founder of a law firm that authorities say was at the centre of a conspiracy to hide money linked to illegal activities.

Jurgen Mossack founded Mossack & Fonseca with then associate Ramon Fonseca, who died in May. Mossack was acquitted on Friday along with others after a Panamanian judge found that the evidence against Mossack didn't comply with the chain of custody after authorities raided the office of the now defunct firm.

Prosecutors had accused Mossack, Fonseca and others of creating offshore companies and using complex transactions to hide money from illegal activities related to the so-called car wash corruption scandal involving Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, which pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court to a charge related to using shell companies to hide millions of dollars in bribes paid worldwide to win public contracts.

The judge noted that other evidence in the Panama Papers case "was not sufficient and conclusive to determine the criminal responsibility of the accused."

In addition, the judge lifted personal and property precautionary measures against all the defendants, according to a judicial statement.

"We feel satisfied in the midst of mixed emotions, because many lives were affected along the way," Guillermina Mc Donald, who was the defence attorney for Mossack and Fonseca, told The Associated Press. Her firm also represented 80 per cent of the accused firm's collaborators.

Judge Balaoisa Marquinez had decided to combine the Panama Papers case with another known as "Operation Car Wash," a major anti-corruption investigation that began in Brazil.

On Friday, she ruled that in the car wash case, "it was not possible to determine the entry of money from illicit sources, coming from Brazil, into the Panamanian financial system with the purpose of hiding, concealing, disguising or helping to evade the legal consequences of the preceding crime."

In June 2022, Mossack, Fonseca and 37 other people were acquitted in a separate money laundering case.
