Update on Harvard BBS Acceptance Rate

Hi everyone,

I just heard some information that surprised me today that I wanted to share (as it's quite different than previous post-interview acceptance rates that I had heard for Harvard BBS). There are ~70 people attending the first (January) interview weekend, and ~50 people attending the second (Feb) interview weekend. They're also still expecting to hear back from a few more people who haven't yet signed up.

They are looking to fill 65-70 spots for this cycle. 

I was quite surprised, because I'd heard for Harvard BBS that if you get an interview, you're pretty much good (~90% post-interview acceptance rate), but these numbers don't indicate that.

Just wanted to share this info, as I know people are often talking about acceptance rates!

I should have added that I was told that, yes, more offers go out than the 65-70 spots that they're looking to fill (makes sense, as we know students will choose other programs for various reasons). But absolutely not to the tune of 80-90% of interviewees receiving an offer of admission.

Exactly! I think I was feeling too confident before I found this out!

I don't think this is as bad as it seems at first glance. 70 admits out of a group of 120 is approximately a ~60% acceptance rate, but you have to consider that even top programs don't have 100% enrollment rates. The students that end up getting offers from Harvard are going to be getting offers from other excellent schools, so they always have to send out more offers than they have spots in order to fill out their incoming class. This means that the the actual post-interview admissions rate has to substantially higher than 60% - I figure that somewhere around 80% is reasonable based on the numbers you mentioned.

Edit: Didn't see OP's edit to his original post. But I do think it's reasonable to expect an 80% rate.

Whew! That is reassuring!

Wow that really relieved me! I feel kind of surprised by the ~50% yield rate tho, given that the MD and MD-PhD program at HMS both have 75%+ yield rates. Maybe many people who get in Harvard BBS tend to have multiple offers from other top programs, but getting into multiple top schools for MD/MD-PhD is way harder?

(1)Last year all programs in HILS (BBS, BIG, MCO, immunology, chem bio, etc) accepted~396 students (2331 total applicants*17% admission rate), and the entering class is 210, which makes the yield rate ~53% .

(2)Since BBS is the largest cohort in HILS (~31% of the HILS), let's assume that the yield rate of BBS is similar to that number of the whole HILS. 

(3)In order to fill 65 spots, BBS needs to accept 65/0.53=122 students . If the # of spots to fill is 70, they need to accept 132 .

(4)~120 people will attend two interview weekends, and there are more internationals do Skype interview. Harvard BBS has ~30% intl students, let's assume that among 30%, half (15%) reside in the US and are already included in the 120, and the remaining 15% will do skype. The total interviewee number (onsite+skype)=120/(1-0.15)=142 . 

(5) The conclusion: BBS will interview ~140 students and accept 120-130 students, which makes the post-interview acceptance rate 86-93% . Not bad at all.

Was told by the secretary during Sys Bio interview that the acceptance rate was ~60%

Maybe they're adjusting how many people they admit this year based on last year's results which they told us was a very big class (~70-75). Since so many people accepted last year, they probably think a similar trend will occur this year, and of course those are huge numbers in terms of cost for the program. When we didn't hear back last week, I suspected something was up and perhaps (I suspect) the 1st group of interviewees won't hear back until after the 2nd interview. Basically, I think they are going to pool all interviewees and cut from that instead of each weekend (reducing the amount accepted in total).

We do not have rolling admissions, so there is no advantage to submitting application materials early. [NOTE: the next application cycle will open in the fall of 2024]

INTERVIEW DATES : For those invited, in-person interviews will take place from February 6-7, 2024.   Please make note of these dates as we only offer one interview opportunity.

FEE : $105 U.S. – Payable to Harvard Griffin GSAS-Harvard University. This fee must accompany the application for admission; applications will not be processed without the full fee. Application fee waivers can be requested directly through the online application.

REQUIREMENTS: Matriculants are required to have at minimum a bachelor’s degree.

GRE TESTS: GRE General Test scores will not be considered when applications are reviewed.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

If English is not your native language, there are only three acceptable ways to demonstrate English proficiency: 1) Hold a bachelor’s degree from an institution at which English is the language of instruction; 2) Score at least 100 on the TOEFL iBT Test; 3) Score at least 7.5 on the IELTS test. Please note that Harvard Griffin GSAS does not accept scores from the TOEFL ITP Plus examination.

TOEFL TEST : TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

When requesting TOEFL score reports, be sure to indicate the receiving institution as Harvard University, Graduate Division, Arts & Sciences code R-3451.

IELTS TEST : IELTS Academic Test (International English Language Testing System)

For those students planning to submit IELTS scores, please note that we will only accept official IELTS Academic scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the E-Delivery service. Scores from the IELTS General Training module are not accepted. At the time of test-taking, please specify Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences as a score recipient. We do not accept IELTS paper test Report Forms nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRFs).

RECOMMENDATIONS : 3 recommendations are required.  It is suggested that you communicate to recommenders you listed on the application so that they submit their recommendations before the deadline.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The statement of purpose is a particularly important part of the application. We suggest that applicants take time to familiarize themselves with program faculty to assess compatibility with their scientific interests and align their purpose and goals with the program.  A well-crafted statement should address the following:

• Your motivation in seeking doctoral-level training in the BPH Program
• Specific aspects of the BPH Program that motivated you to apply
• A description of any past research experience
• Your current research interests
• The BPH faculty members who most closely match your interests and reasons why you would like to work with them
• Your current career aspirations
• If applicable, a brief description of any hardships, adversity or extenuating circumstances that you feel provide important context for other components of your application

Did Gabby Thomas graduate from Harvard? All about the American athlete's college and educational qualifications

Gabby Thomas of the USA has qualified for the women's 200m finals at the Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old American sprinter clocked 22.20 and 21.86 seconds in the heats and the semifinals respectively to qualify for the 200m finals at the Paris Olympics.

Thomas' mother wishes her to do a PhD next as the American athlete completed her master's degree in May 2023. However, the athlete herself seems to be in no hurry. In an interview with Olympics.com, Thomas said [via Olympics.com],

"I think we're gonna put that on hold for a little while. And focus on my Olympic dreams right now."

What degree does Gabby Thomas have?

Thomas has excelled in both athletics and education. She graduated from Harvard University in neurobiology and global health. Subsequently, she completed her masters in public health and epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, while also focusing on her athletic career.

Before the Paris Olympics, Thomas was not among the top favorites for an Olympic gold medal. The likes of Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shericka Jackson of Jamaica were seen as standing in her path toward the Olympic gold medal. Favour Ofili from Nigeria and Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia [who recently won a surprise gold medal in women's 100m] were also tough competitors in the 200m. However, with both Thompson-Herah and Jackson out of the competition, Thomas' pursuit of Olympic gold has become slightly easier.

Gabby Thomas on "making a difference in people's lives" while also being an elite athlete

Gabrielle 'Gabby' Thomas is one of those rare all-rounders who has pursued education and passion with equal success. Apart from pursuing athletics, Thomas also volunteers for a health care clinic, a job that she took up while studying for her master's degree at the University of Texas.

In the aforementioned interview, Thomas also talked about how she is grateful for what she does for a living:

"I think I'm just so grateful to get to do what I love. I think about it all the time, and even after a hard day at the track, when I'm tired and wheezing from practice, I'm just like 'I'm just so grateful to be doing what I love, and to do it for a living.' "

Thomas also mentioned in the interview how she loves serving others:

"....And then I go to the clinic and volunteer and make a difference in people's lives. So I feel so fulfilled, and I feel so passionate about everything I do. And [that all] really comes from just gratitude."

Thomas won two medals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020: a bronze in the women's 200m and a silver in the women's 4x100m relay. Though she won't be competing in the relay event in Paris, Thomas will be aiming for the elusive gold medal in the women's 200m at the Paris Olympics tonight at the Stade de France.

Thomas C. Owen (PhD in history, Harvard, 1973) is an Associate of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Harvard University (since 2005) and a former professor of history at Louisiana State University (1974-2005). He became interested in Russian social history as a graduate student at Harvard, and he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the social and ideological evolution of the Moscow merchants, 1840-70 ( The social and ideological evolution of the Moscow merchants, 1840-1870, HOLLIS Number : 003894231 ). His collection of materials on Russian social and economic history after 1800 began in 1971, when he, then a PhD student seeking primary sources for his research, purchased from the Lenin Library (Moscow) a microfilm of the 1850-73 portion of Fedor V. Chizhov's diary which was relevant to the dissertation.

After the publication of his first book, on the Moscow merchants in 1981 ( Capitalism and politics in Russia : a social history of the Moscow merchants, 1855-1905 , HOLLIS Number : 000949332 ), Owen widened the scope of his research to include corporations and business organizations throughout the Russian Empire. He continued his study of primary materials during subsequent visits to Moscow again in 1980, 1992, and 1996. Gaining access to and obtaining copies of the desired materials often meant facing challenges that were unusual for a Western researcher, as well as seeking the help of American library professionals. Thus, Marianna Tax Choldin, of the University of Illinois Library, was instrumental in helping Owen obtain the microfilm copies of Chizhov’s diary (the 1825-50 and 1873-77 portions) from the Lenin Library. Eventually, Fedor V. Chizhov became the subject of Thomas C. Phd candidate, department of history.

I am a PhD candidate in the History Department at Harvard University, specializing in the history of the post-Stalin Soviet Union. I am interested in the social history and history of consumption under socialism. My dissertation project explores the meaning and forms of personal wealth in the late Soviet Union (1960-1980s).

At Harvard, I am a Teaching Fellow and a Graduate Student Associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.

I received my bachelor's degree in History and master's degree in Cultural Studies from the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) in Moscow, Russia. Then I completed a graduate program at the Institute of Russian History, Russian Academy of Sciences and got a degree of kandidat nauk . My kandidatskaya dissertation examined the history of hard currency stores in the post-Stalin Soviet Union. It was published as a book in Russian in 2017.

How smart is Gabby Thomas? What to know about USA sprinter's college degrees from Harvard, Texas

Gabby Thomas can do it all on and off the track.

The 27-year-old is one of the fastest 200-meter sprinters in the world, having won the bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She's once again in the finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the favorite to win gold.

In addition to her blazing speed, she's incredibly smart. Thomas studied neurobiology and global health as an undergraduate student at Harvard before going on to earn her Master's degree in public health. Her PhD may be up next in her educational journey, but the sprinter is focused on achieving her athletic goals at the moment.

How smart is Gabby Thomas?

Thomas is not only extremely athletic but she's gifted in the classroom as well. She enrolled at Harvard University to study neurobiology and global health. She knew she wanted to study neurobiology since high school.

"I knew that I wanted to study neurobiology. I just didn't know what college I wanted to study it at," Thomas said on Cars and Culture with Jason Stein . "I was just really intrigued by just what you could do when you study the brain.

"I recalled seeing my twin brother going through some neuro treatments for his ADHD and seeing how effective that was. ... You can change lives with this."

Just 3.2 percent of applicants are accepted into Harvard, according to 2022 numbers from Prepscholar.com . The university is widely considered one of the best schools in the world.

Thomas balanced being a full-time NCAA athlete and a challenging neurobiology major.

When she graduated from Harvard in 2019, she began her graduate studies at the University of Texas. She obtained a Master's degree in public health focused on epidemiology.

Thomas may not be done with her studies either. Her mother wants her to get her PhD next, though the Olympian is focusing on her Olympic goals at the moment.

Where did Gabby Thomas go to college?

Thomas attended Harvard University for her undergraduate degree, graduating in 2019. She studied neurobiology and global health, which she had planned to do since high school.

The Olympic sprinter was named the Ivy League’s Most Outstanding Track Performer in 2017 and 2018. She won the NCAA title for the 200-meter dash in 2018.

After Harvard, Thomas enrolled at the University of Texas. She studied at the school's health science center to earn her Master's degree in public health, specializing in epidemiology. She graduated in 2023.

Thomas' mother would like her daughter to earn her PhD, but the Olympian is focused on her track career at the moment.
