Can I choose my own hours?

You choose the hours that you work, our self-employed packages are completely flexible. It's your business, so the more hours you put in, the more you get out.

Is there a minimum sales value?

There are no sales values put in place for you. What you achieve is simply down to you and how much hard work you put in.

How long will it take to be up and running?

Once we receive your signed consultancy agreement, we can have you up and running in four to six weeks.

What kind of support will I receive?

You are supported by travel industry professionals working in a number of head office departments. In addition to this you will have a dedicated homeworking support team as well a business development team who are on hand to answer queries and give you advice on how to market your business.

Is there any out-of-hours support?

Absolutely, many of our departments are open well in to the evening and on weekends; we are on hand to help and support you.

What happens when I go on holiday?

We have a customer service team who can help with bookings and queries on existing bookings whilst you are away.

How much can I earn?

That is entirely up to you, the more you put in the more you get out. The earning potential is unlimited. Our top sales-people all say that they make more now, than they ever could working in a branch/call center. Several of our homeworkers' profit was over £100k last year, of which they receive 60%.

Are there monthly management fees?

The Academy New to Travel Models have no monthly management fee for the first 12 months. The fee will then be £55 per month. The Experienced Travel Professional PTC Models, the management fee is £55 per month.

Is there an upfront deposit for the New to Travel / Academy model?

Yes, if you choose the New to Travel Academy model, you will be required to pay a upfront deposit of £2400 inclusive of VAT. This equates to 6 months of your New to Travel Academy payment upfront and is non refundable.

Will the Leads Supported model have any expectations of me?

In order to make the Leads Supported model work for you, you will need to ensure you have a working pattern you can commit to be online ready to take leads. Your Business Development Coach will support you with conversion of the leads and offer coaching and development where needed & can share with you the busiest times of the day to work to assist with your planning.

What is the payment plan option for the New to Travel Academy model?

You will pay the upfront deposit of £2400 inclusive of VAT at time of purchase. This will cover the first 6 months of trading. In month 7 for a remaining term of 18 months, you will pay £400 per calendar month.

Is this growing business model a good fit for your future?

Today’s home-based travel agent has multiple options: part-time or full-time; employee, independent contractor or self-employed; aligned with a host agency, owner of a franchise or independent; new to the industry, experienced travel agent or phasing into retirement…

All the options, the many appeals of working from a home-based office and ongoing cultural changes continue to lead to increases in agents who are choosing to work from home. In fact, in Travel Weekly’s 2017 Travel Industry Survey, released in October 2017, more than half (55 percent) of the travel agent respondents were home-based, with 18 percent defining themselves as home-based employees and another 37 percent identifying themselves as independent home-based agents.

"There is no one right way to go about becoming a home-based agent,” says Joanie Ogg, CTC, MCC, a long-time champion of home-based travel agents and co-owner of HomeBasedTravelAgent.com, FindaHostTravelAgency.com and TravelProfessionalCommunity.com. “But whatever the path, an agent is going to have to have a business plan and a marketing plan to go along with that from the very beginning. You have to have a plan to know where you’re going, maintain your focus and continue in the right direction.”

Thinking about becoming a home-based agent? While there are no right or wrong answers, here are some considerations to start the thought process.

What are your motivations?

In the lead-up to opening her own home-based agency about a year ago, Tara Hyland asked herself the hard questions, including: “Is this something I really want to do? Why do I want to do it? Am I willing to step out and see where it leads me?”

Hyland had been in the travel industry for 35 years, most recently as a luxury leisure travel agent in a brick-and-mortar agency for four years. “Primarily I wanted the independence of running my own business,” she says. “I wanted the opportunity to be more in charge of my time management and to have more control of my earning capacity. Opening my own agency seemed to be part of a natural evolution of my career.” Her answers helped dictate her next step, which was to start Tara Hyland, LLC, an independent affiliate of Worldview Travel, in the Houston area.

What’s your model?

Hyland opted to join a host agency, a choice made by more than two-thirds (69 percent) of all independent home-based agencies, according to the 2017 Travel Industry Survey. In the survey, the top reasons agents chose for joining a host agency include access to preferred suppliers (89 percent), to book travel (76 percent) and for accounting or marketing services (62 percent). Hyland also says, “The other important part for me was the technology piece…I can book through a point and click system rather than a GDS, which I find more user-friendly.”

While Hyland has been happy with her host choice, Katina Bradley has changed host agencies in her five years as co-owner of Wish You Were Here Vacations, LLC, based in northern California. “We started with one host, but it wasn’t the right fit,” she says, noting that she had also considered a franchise model. “Finding the right fit took some time.”

Brand-new to the industry when she started her own business with her husband, she says, “Originally I got most of my information from my very good friend Google. I didn’t realize all the Facebook groups that were available at the beginning and I didn’t know how much help is available—this is such an open and giving industry and people will trip over themselves to help you if you come into it with the right attitude and develop real relationships.”

Where will your business come from?

One of the reasons Bradley changed hosts was the evolution of her business model. When she and her husband started their part-time business, she chose a host where she brought in her own clients. “That was well and good when I didn’t have to count on the income,” she says, “but when I went full-time, we changed hosts to one that provides leads.”

“For transitional agents, who have been in a brick-and-mortar agency setting, this is a big question,” says Ogg. “Do they have a book of business they can take with them? If not, they’ll have to consider what they need to create their own book of business: What do they specialize in? What special skills might they need? What resources do they have, and what additional resources do they need to build that business?”

Deb Fogarty, CTA, ECC, owner of Be Well Travel, LLC, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, has relied on referrals, organic marketing and a well-defined brand since she started her own home-based agency in 2013. After entering the travel business in 2008 as a personal assistant to a travel agency owner, she worked as an independent contractor before branching out on her own. “That agency wasn’t the best fit for me and when I realized how well I was doing, I decided to take a chance and see if I could do it on my own,” she says. “This year I set a financial goal for myself that I never thought I would really reach—and I’ve almost doubled it.”

Are you prepared to run a business?

“For many agents, the business side is the hardest part,” says Ogg. “Agents are passionate about selling travel and creating dream vacations for clients. But then there’s the reality of running the actual business side, which can be more challenging.”

Bradley learned “the industry and how to run a business in the industry at the same time,” although she has help from her husband co-owner, who has years of tax, bookkeeping and other business experience.

And Hyland points out, “People might think a home-based business doesn’t require as much planning, but you need to factor in all the business aspects, including equipment and space needs, privacy to work, licensing, business structure, tax implications, internet domain names, marketing plans and so much more.” In the first year, she also emphasizes the importance of understanding your financial situation and exposure. “It’s unknown what the earnings will be, especially in that first year,” she says. “Can you absorb the expenses while you’re finding new clients and transitioning existing ones to build your business?”

Fogarty, who started at a dining room table and now has a complete home office to work from, recommends consulting an accountant and planning for a payroll check every week, along with taking out taxes regularly. Although she says she works “40 to 60 hours a week, and sometimes 70,” she also is strategic in carving out time for education and networking. “I meet other high-caliber agents who work as hard as I do. And it’s so refreshing to meet with other agents and hear about their challenges and successes,” she says.

7 types of travel agents around the world

Travel agents are an important part of the tourism industry. There are several different types of travel agents. The different types of travel agents vary according to the service they provide and the products that they offer. In this article I will teach you about the different types of travel agents and provide some examples too.

What’s a travel agent?

High street travel agents, business travel agents, call centre travel agents, internet travel agents, independent travel agents, multiple travel agents, miniple travel agents, types of travel agents: to conclude, further reading .

A travel agency is a private retailer that sells travel-related products and services to consumers. This includes package holidays as well as individual holiday elements such as hotel rooms, flight tickets and travel insurance.

Travel agents typically use global distribution systems (GDS). These systems enable to travel agent staff to receive real-time updates on availability and prices and to make bookings.

Travel agencies typically take a percentage of the overall fee that a consumer pays, known as commission. Commission rates vary depending on the product and/or service that is sold. It is for this reason that consumers will sometimes pay more for a holiday booked through a travel agency than they would if they booked it directly with the suppliers.

The different types of travel agents

There are four main types of travel agents in the travel and tourism industry: high street, business, callcentre and Internet. I will explain how each of these types of travel agents work below. BUT before you read on, hit play on my new YouTube video below!

High street travel agents have been around for a long time. Up until only a few years ago, high street travel agents were the most popular and themes common types of travel agents.

High street travel agents are typically found in major shopping areas, such as local high streets or in shopping malls.

High street travel agents typically have an area where holiday brochures are displayed and desks for consumers to sit at and talk than travel agent. Travel agent staff are generally very knowledgeable about the products and services thatchy are selling and offer high standards of customer service.

Many people continue to prefer house high street travel agents because they enjoy the face-to-face interaction.However, fewer and fewer people have been using travel agents in recent years. This has led to the closure of many high street travel agents.

High street travel agent examples: TUI, Hays Travel, Cooperative Travel

Business travel agents specialise in planning and booking travel for business purposes. Business tourism is one of the largest types of tourism . As such, this is an important type of travel agent.

Business travel agents do not always have a visible high street presence. Instead, they may be tucked away in office blocks or in quiet locations.This is because they do not tend to have walk-in business.

Business travel agents typically work with companies to organise business travel. Stays tend to be shorter than ordinary holidays. Business travel agents are popular because they help to save organisations timed money, given that they are able to quickly plan itineraries and book travel the best prices.

Business travel agent examples: Crystal Corporate, Click Travel, Kanoo Corporate

A call centre travel agent is a travel agent which is based in a call centre.

Call centre travel agents provide advice and guidance on booking your holiday via the telephone. Many major travel agencies will have call centres as wells high street shops.

Call centres have lower overheads than high street retailers because they do not have to pay premium prices for their offices- they have the flexibility to be based anywhere.

Some companies even choose to base their callcentres in developing countries, where wages and overhead costs are lower. However, this has been known to have a detrimental impact on the service offered due to language barriers and cultural differences.

Internet travel agents are travel agents theatre based the Internet. This includes major travel companies as wells independent travel agents who are working from home.

Internet travel agents are the most popular types of travel agents nowadays. Many people prefer to book online.

Just like high street travel agents, Internet travel agents take a commission from the money paid by the consumer.

The rise of the Internet travel agent has been so significant in recent years that there is now a lot of competition in the marketplace. This helps to drive down prices and to make holidays more affordable to customers.

Types of travel agent businesses

The types of travel agents can also be distinguished by their business model. There are three major business models that are used: independent, multiple, miniple. I will explain what each of these are below.

An independent travel agent is an agent is a unique company. There is only one branch and it is not associated with any other travel agency stores or companies.

Independent travel agents are commonly found in small towns and villages. They are usually locally-run businesses. Because of scales of economy, independent travel agents are often not able to compete with the lower prices offered by larger types of travel agents.

Independent travel agents do not necessarily need to have physical travel agency. There are many people who are running their own, successful travel agency businesses from home. These are Internet travel agents who are operating on an independent basis.

Since COVID-19, many organisations have reduced their business travel requirements, opting instead for Zoom calls and webinars facilitated by the shut-in economy . It is predicted that this change will be irreversible and therefore that the need for business travel agents will be permanently reduced.

A multiple travel agent is one which has a chain of branches. They are typically large organisations with a strong high street presence.

Multiple travel agents did have a monopoly of the market for many years. However, they have struggled to compete with the Internet travel agents, who have fewer overheads and are more conveniently located- on a consumer’s computer/smart device!

Miniple travel agents are travel agents that have several branches. These are usually mid-sized companies. They are often regional.

As you can see, the travel agency market has changed a lot in recent years. We have moved away from the traditional multiple on the high street towards an Internet-based approach when researching and booking our holidays. Nonetheless, there does continue to be a desire for travel agents, albeit largely online.

The number of self-employed agents under The Personal Travel Consultants in partnership with Blue Bay Travel (PTCs) umbrella has grown to 55 with 15 new recruits.

The have joined from other homeworking companies and or from high street roles, reflecting a growing demand for the work-life balance and elevated income, according to the company.

Late bookings for this summer accounted for half of sales made in the last three months compared to 44% for the same period last year.

This came as PTCs claimed a 42% year-on-year increase in sales for the first half of 2024, without disclosing actual figures.

However, demand for luxury short-haul has grown, with average booking values for Turkey having exceeded £6,000, and £4,000 for the Canary Islands – levels traditionally more associated with long-haul.

While Turkey remains a perennial favourite, long-haul destinations including the Maldives and Mexico are also proving popular, as customers continue to seek out premium, bucket-list destinations.

The PTCs can utilise customer leads provided by Blue Bay Travel. However, many are using social media marketing to grow their own customer databases resulting in a 67% year-on-year jump in sales through self-generated leads.

Bookings from self-generated customer leads, which PTCs receive 65% commission, have achieved an average booking value of £4,399 so far this year, compared with £3,000 in 2023.

Group manager Abbie Heaton said: “The hard work of our PTCs has been transformative and is instrumental in achieving these remarkable results.

“It’s an exciting time for the business and is really rewarding to see our consultants reaping the financial rewards of the robust, personal relationships they have built with their clients.

“It’s wonderful to be growing our volume of PTCs too but my top priority remains to nurture our team of high-calibre agents who are committed for the long term.

“The quality of our consultants contributes significantly to our growth as a business, resulting in high individual performance and increased profit margins.”
