Subhash Chandra Bose, affectionately called Netaji, was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Orissa. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian freedom struggle. Deeply moved by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he gave up a promising career in the civil services to join the freedom movement. He founded the Indian National Army to overthrow the British Empire from India. His famous motto was “Give me blood and I will give you freedom.” However, the defeat of Japan and Germany in the Second World War forced INA to retreat and it could not achieve its objective. Subhash Chandra Bose was reportedly killed in an air crash over Taipei, Taiwan (Formosa) on 18 August 1945.

He is an electrical engineer by profession. He left his job and started working towards the eradication of child slavery and child labour. He is the founder of the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), a movement dedicated towards eradication of human trafficking and bonded child labour. He started a journal ‘The Struggle Shall Continue’ in 1980 to create awareness about the widespread weevil of child labour. He is the Nobel Peace Prize winner for India for ‘his struggle against the suppression of children and found people and for the right of all children to education. ‘He is also the only second Indian winner of the Nobel Peace Prize after Mother Terressa in 1980. What is a biography?

A biography is a kind of paragraph on the life of some famous personality whose life stories inspire us in many ways to progress in life.

How to write a Biography:

  • Write the title in capital letters (about whom you are going to write the Biography.)
  • In biography writing, past tense is generally used.
  • An introductory sentence and concluding sentence must be used in a biography.
  • Biography writing follows a chronological order starting from birth to death.
  • All the given hints must be used to write the biography. Students can add one or two sentences.

For further studies, he went to London and got his B.Sc and D.Sc degrees from Edinburgh University. Coming back to India, he joined the Presidency College as a professor. He was the first scientist in the world to prepare Mercurous Nitrate in the laboratory. Later, he established the Bengal Chemical for scientific research. He also joined the Science College as Palit Professor. This great son of India left us forever in 1944. We  will  remember him forever for his great contributions.

He was very reckless and spirited from his childhood. He passed the Entrance Examination in the First Division from the Metropolitan School.

Thereafter, he graduated with Honours in Philosophy from the Scottish Church College, Calcutta in 1881. After that, he came in contact with Ramkrishna Paramhansa. This meeting with Ramkrishna brought a radical change in his life. He became a monk and later came to be known as Swami Vivekananda. He travelled all over India on foot. He attended the Parliament of Religion at Chicago. He set up the supremacy of the Hindu Religion. He established the Ramkrishna Mission in 1897 and the Belur Math in 1899. He was such a patriot who worked selflessly. He was a lover of mankind. This great man died on July 4, 1902, only at the age of 39. We  will  remember him forever for his great contributions.

              KALPANA CHAWLA

Kalpana Chawla was the first female astronaut of India. She was born in 1961 in Karnal in Punja. Her parents were Banarasilal , a businessman and her mother was Sanjothi , a  housewife. Her early education started at Tagore Balniketan in Karnal, Punjab. From childhood, she dreamt of flying high in the sky. She obtained her degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College. In 1984, she obtained her Master Degree from Texas University.

Later, she received a Doctorate Degree from the University of Colorado. She took American Citizenship and joined NASA to fulfill her dream. She made her maiden space flight in 1977 with five other astronauts successfully. Kalpana was selected for her next space flight. She along with her other crew members was about to come back on the earth in the US space Shuttle Columbia. But just fifteen minutes to land, Columbia crashed over Texas on the 16th of January 2003. Thus, the life of this brave girl came to an end. We  will  remember her forever for her great contributions.

His famous writings include Betaal Panchabinsati, Bodhodoy, Upakramanika, Borno Porichoy, Sitar Bonobas, etc. We know him as ‘the ocean of learning’ for his deep knowledge. He was very kind also. That is why We all know as “the ocean of kindness’. This nobleman died on July 29, 1891. We  will  remember him forever for his great contributions.

International chess champion Vishwanathan Anand was born on December 11, 1969 in Tamil Nadu. As a child, he enjoyed listening to music, swimming and reading.  He is popularly known as Vishy or the Tiger of Madras. Anand is married with a son. He was the world chess champion from 2007 to 2013. At the tender age of 17, he won the world chess title at the FIDE Junior championship held in 1987. Louis Pasteur was a 19 th century biologist and chemist. He was born on December 27, 1822 in France. Through his studies he proved that germs could be killed by heating the liquid containing them. He invented pasteurization, which is the process of boiling milk to kill microorganisms in it. He is known as the father of immunology. He proved that diseases are caused by microorganisms and invented vaccination for rabies and several other diseases. He won several awards for his inventions and contribution to medical research.

Question 1. You love your father very much, for he is an ideal father. Describe him in your own words in 100-150 words. Answer: Mr Raj Gupta is my father. He is a very polite and caring person. He loves me very much. Although he is a very busy person, yet he pays full attention to me and helps my mother in household chores. He is an ideal father to me. Once I fell seriously ill. It took four days and five nights to recover. All those days he took leave from his office and did not sleep the whole night while he sat beside me.

When I recovered, he took a sigh of relief. He is a true friend and counsellor to me. Without him I am lost. I pray to God to make him happy throughout the life.

Question 2. One of your friends, Raman, is very gentle and polite to you. You regard him as your best friend. Describe him in 100-150 words. Answer: I have many friends. Of them, Raman is my best friend. He is the friend I have always longed for. We are also classmates. He always stood by me in support during misfortunes. He is also a healthy critic as his criticism always helps me improve my behaviour and personality. Being a topper in the class, he also helps me in my studies. To conclude, he has been a boon to me. In the evening, he comes to me. We do homework together. Then we go to the park for playing and workout. Whenever I am wrong he explains to me my mistakes and tells me what to do next? Question 3. Describe your favourite dancer in 100-150 words. Answer: I have come across many dancers in my life and fond of most but Madhuri Dixit is my favourite.

She is an Indian actor. She has been praised by critics for her dancing skills. When she dances, her movements sway the air. I have watched alf her movies in which she gave superb dancing performances. She speaks very well through her dance postures. It seems that she has dance in her DNA. She dances collectively but if we go into deep we will discover that every part of her body is dancing individually. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Question 4. Last summer vacation you went to your friend’s village. His grandmother looked after you as if you were her grandchild. Describe her in 100-150 words. Answer: In every summer vacation, I visit some hill station, but last time I visited my friend’s grandmother’s village on her repeated invitations. She gave me a warm welcome. First of all, we took a bath in the river and rested under the dense trees. She cared a lot, especially for me as I was her guest. Her sweet nature and soft speaking really impressed me.

The breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by her were not only tasty but full of love. She took care of my every small need. I felt as if I were in grandmother’s paradise. She also showed many photographs from her album. She also told me that she was a champion in swimming. She won many gold medals in swimming competition. Rahman: Indian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician and philanthropist; born.in Chennai on 6 January 1967; graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University; famous in integrating Indian classical music with electronic music, world music and traditional orchestral arrangements; recipient of the Padmashri and the Padma Vibhushan awards; two Oscars and a Golden Globe; a notable humanitarian and philanthropist; donates and raises money for a number of causes and charities.

Answer: A.R. Rahman (Allah Rakha Rahman) is an Indian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician and philanthropist who was born in Chennai on 6 January 1967. Rahman was earlier known as A.S. Dileep Kumar before he converted from Hinduism to Islam. He is a graduate from Trinity college, Oxford Univeristy. His extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname of ‘the Mozart of Madras’. He first debuted with the movie ‘Roja’.

He is famous in integrating Indian classical music with electronic music, world music and traditional orchestral arrangements. He is the recipient of the Padmashri and the Padma Vibhushan awards. He has won two Oscars and a golden globe too. He is a notable humanitarian and philanthropist. He does a lot of charity work too; he donates and raises money for a number of causes and charities. Men like him are hard to find.

Question 6. One day you were commuting in a DTC bus. Unfortunately, your wallet was left at home. The conductor gave you the ticket for free. You are moved by his gesture. Describe him in 100-150 words. Answer: One day I was commuting on a DTC bus. Unfortunately, my wallet was left at home. I had no money to buy the ticket and it was useless to plead before the conductor. Every moment was adding to my anxiety, lest I should be caught by the ticket checker and further consequences. The conductor asked me to take the ticket but after knowing the truth he offered me the ticket. I looked at him as if I was asking the reason and he just smiled.

The conductor was a conscientious and kind-hearted person. He understood my problem and so did not fine. I deboarded the bus thanking him from the deep of my heart. I was moved by the behaviour of the conductor and it had been an unforgettable experience of my life.

Question 7. Write a short descriptive paragraph on the famous Indian scientist Sir CV Raman in 100-150 words on the basis of the following inputs.

Born on 7 November 1888 in Madras—Physician by profession—worked in the field of light scattering—the discovery is known as ‘Raman Effect’—won Nobel Prize in 1930 for his discovery—elected ‘Fellow of the Royal Society’ in 1924—in 1954 India honoured him with its height civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’—breathed his last on 21 November 1970.

Answer: Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman born on 7 November 1888, in the former Madras Province of India (presently Tamil Nadu) was an Indian physician who carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material. Some of the deflected light changes wavelength. This phenomena of “Raman effect” earned him the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics.

Raman was honoured with a large number of honorary doctorates and memberships of scientific societies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society early in his career in 1924 and knighted in 1929. He later resigned from the fellowship in 1968 for reasons unrecorded, the only Indian FRS ever to do so.

In 1954, India honoured him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna and celebrates National Science Day on 28 February of every’ year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect in 1928. Raman breathed his last on 21 November 1970.

Answer: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is an Indian billionare entrepreneur and also the chairperson and managing director of Biocon United (a Biotechnology company) and is also the chairperson of IIM Bengaluru. Born to Gujarati parents in Bengaluru. She did her schooling from Bishop’s Cotton Girls’ High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Bangalore University. She hoped to go to a medical school but did not obtain a scholarship.

Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar was the head brewmaster at United Breweries. He suggested her to pursue a course in fermentation science to be trained as a brewmaster which was a very non-traditional course for a woman. Mazumdar went to the Federation University in Australia to study Malting and Brewing in 1974, the only woman enrolled in the brewing course and earned the Master’s degree in brewery in 1975.

She joined the Biocon Company as a trainee manager for a brief period at Cork Ireland and then returned to India to start her own business. And the rest is history. She has won several national and international awards and honours today. She has been listed by Forbes as one of the most. powerful women in the world at 77th and 71st positions in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

While describing a place there are some important steps :

  • Break the description into 2-3 paragraphs.
  • Each paragraph should have a topic sentence.
  • Describe one aspect of the place in each paragraph.
  • It is important to ensure continuity in paragraphs.
  • If the description has to be written in one paragraph, then include all the details briefly.

Question 1. You happen to visit Bhallard in the foothills of Kumaon. You collected details about this place. Write a descriptive paragraph on the basis of the following inputs in 100-150 words. You Head To Bhallard, In The Kumaon Foothills

  • Nearest Airport : New Delhi
  • Nearest Railway Station : Kathgodam (KKDM). Tickets are always in demand and need to be booked well in advance. By
  • Road : From Delhi, NH 24 to Moradabad and Rampur and NH 87 to Kathgodam; via Bhimtal to Ramgarh and from there to Nathuakhan via Talla (lower) Ramgarh; From Nathuakhan, 4 km on the road towards Hartola is Bhallard village.
  • Facilities : Tourist attractions abound in several places : Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal, Ramgarh, Almora. A few home-stay options are available and need to be “identified”.
  • Attractions : Natural beauty is witnessed in its abundance in this region. Lakes with boating facilities abound : for example Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal. The Kumaon hills are wonderful for trekkers, bird watchers, nature enthusiasts and many an unspoilt hill-path beckons you. Orchards and fruit-laden trees abound in the Nathuakhan/Bhallard area.

Answer: Ballard in Kumaon district is a place where nature’s beauty can be captured. It is close to Kathgodam railway station. The nearest airport is Delhi. From h§re one can either take a train or go by road. There are many interesting places to stay there including home-stay options at Almora. Nature’s pristine beauty can be seen here. In Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal boating facilities are available. The Kumaon hills are a wonderful place for bird watchers, nature lovers and trekkers. One can see fruit-laden trees in Ballard. Aah! Home-stay option charge? 4,000/- night per couple with 2 children below 12 free.

Question 2. You recently visited the city of Jaipur, famous for its Hawa Mahal, the palace and forts. Shopping in Jaipur is also exciting as there are many things to buy. Write a description of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Jaipur, also referred to as the Pink City. The Hawa Mahal here is made of Pink stone. It is the capital of Rajasthan. It is a colourful city with monuments, good food and lots of shopping. By road from Delhi it is about 4 hours drive. By air just about 45 minutes from Delhi. It is a hot place and the best time to visit is December to February. The rest of the months it will be hot. The palaces constructed by erstwhile kings are marvels of architecture. If one has to see all the monuments it will take no less than 3 days.

Apart from forts, shopping in Jaipur is exciting. Things are reasonably priced, marble carvings and objects made out of stone are famous in Jaipur. The typical Rajasthani cuisine is elaborate and is served with lot of butter and ghee. Some of the dishes are dal, bhatti churma, kachori, etc. The art of tie and dye is very famous in Rajasthan. Fabric, dress material and sarees on which this technique is used are liked by women.

Question 3. Srinagar with its Dal lake, the snow clad mountain peaks and the Shalimar garden is nothing but a paradise on the earth. You visited this beautiful city sometime back. Write an account of the place in 100-150 words. Answer: Kashmir is the paradise on the earth. It is a beautiful place, so scenic with snow clad mountains, beautiful lakes, flowers and fruits all around. Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, is connected by air with all major metros of India. There is no train facility at Kashmir. The nearest railway station is Katra or Jammu. There are many hotels where one can stay.

In the Dal lake there are houseboats called as Shikaras in which one can stay. Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. One can see apple trees laden with apples. Other main trees are Deodar, Firs and Pines, Chenar, Maple, Birch and Walnut. One should visit Srinagar at least once during one’s lifetime.

Question 4. Write a paragraph describing a journey, imaginery, or you have undertaken. You can follow the steps given below:

  • Prepare an itinerary.
  • You can make use of the following expressions, phrases and proverbs frequently used by the travellers.

Jetlag, itchy feet, hit the road, time table, on the home stretch, call it a day, book in advance, travel over, travel through, travel light, any port in a storm, stopover, etc. Answer: We decided to go to Thailand last month. I was too excited to think of what it would be like. We booked the tickets and when the time came, packed our things. When we landed at Thailand airport after a journey of about five hours, I had jet legs but soon forgot it seeing the beauty all around. We checked in the hotel and rested for some time. It was a wonderful day and we enjoyed coconut milk. We hired bikes and toured half of the island relishing the local life that was so lively and full of activity.

On our way, we tasted delicacies of the local cuisine. Mostly it was spicy food. We visited tropical jungles and witness the beauty and splendour of nature. We were overwhelmed by the serenity and beauty of the place. Soon the time to go back arrived. It was a sad feeling to think of leaving this extraordinary calmness. It was the best journey of my life.

Question 5. The city of Delhi, capital of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. With places like Red Fort and Jama Masjid on one hand, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan on the other hand, it is a city worth visiting. You happened to go around the city last month. Write a description of the city in 100-150 words. Answer: Delhi, the capital city of India, is a wonderful amalgamation of tradition and modernity. There are many places to visit in this city. It is the most well-connected city in this country. There is a variety of hotels and guest houses where people who visit this city can stay. If one wishes to visit all the places in this city then one has to stay here for at least 3-4 days. There is Red fort, Jama Masjid, Kutub Minar, India Gate and many other places to visit and see. There is shopping to do in Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Connaught Place.

One can a feel and see the beautiful blend of the old and the new in this city.

Question 6. Write a descriptive paragraph on the following inputs in 100-150 words. , FACT FILE

  • Nearest airport is at Jabalpur (165 km)
  • Nearest town and railwayhead is Umaria (30 km). The other railway stations are Jabalpur (165 km), Katni (102 km) and Satna (120 km).
  • There are varied government and private options for accommodation in Tala village that adjoins the park.
  • The park is open to visitors from October to June. But the best season for viewing wildlife is November to April.
  • Getting around : Maruti Gypsys are used to explore the park. The reservation of these can be done at the Project Tiger office or the hotels where one is staying. The tour is conducted by a guide and in the park one must adhere to the allocated route.

The Bandhavgarh National Park is set amongst the Vindhya Hills and is in the district of Shadol in Madhya Pradesh. It was declared a national park in 1968 and today covers an area of 437 sq. km. The park derives its name from the most prominent hill fort of the area, which is (mythologically) said to have been given by Lord Rama to his brother Laxman to keep a watch on Lanka (Bandhav = Brother, Garh = Fort). Answer: Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in the state Of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest airport is Jabalpur. It is in the Vindhya Hills, in the district’of Shadol in MP. In the year 1968 it was declared as a National Park. This park has a large biodiversity. The park has a large breeding population of leopards and various species of deer. It is declared as the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in 1993. It covers an area of 694 sq. km.

The best time to visit this place to enjoy the wildlife is November to April. There is a variety of accommodation available including Govt, guest houses and private hotels. Maruti Gypsies are used to go around the park. One can book these in advance either from the Project Tiger Office or from the hotel where one is staying.

Question 7. You recently visited the Children’s Park, a favourite place for all children, in your city. Write a description of the Park in 100-150 words. Answer: Children’s Park is the place all children love to go. The park in our city of Delhi is huge. There are about 4 play areas with different types of playthings. The area for small children has swings, see-saw and slides. Then there is a ground where children can play games like badminton, volleyball etc. There is a football court as well. Facing the India Gate is a Tennis court.

Apart form all these there are green areas for parents to play with their children. Families come here for outdoor activities and enjoy picnics especially during winters. There is a provision for cooking as well. There are many trees. As a result during summers, this park remains cool in the day. A park, which, all children should definitely visit.

Any description of an event should include factual details. While writing about an event the following points should be kept in mind.

  • As the event is being described after its completion, one has to use past tense.
  • All the facts about the event have to be included while writing the description.
  • It is always better not to include personal opinion or comment while describing an event.

Question 2. You recently witnessed the World Cup India-South Africa Cricket match that was played in the city of Nagpur. Start to finish it was a nail-biting match. Describe it in 100-150 words. Answer: World Cup matches make the Indian public euphoria. Witnessing a match offers a two-fold advantage. One is witnessing the match and the other is seeing the public go mad. I got an opportunity to see the India-South Africa match that was played at Nagpur. I had flown specially from Mumbai to see the match. The stadium was packed to capacity; there was not an inch of space. Each ball bowled by the Indian bowlers and each run scored by the Indians made people hoot, shout, clap and wave the Indian flag.

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored 111 runs. It was an electrifying performance. Watching it was sheer fun. Bowling of Zaheer Khan was also good.

Question 3. The International Women’s Day was celebrated in all parts of the world with great gusto. As part of the celebrations, women achievers were given awards by the Rotary Club of your city. Among those honoured included the famous Police Officer Kiran Bedi, Sharmila Tagore and Shabana Azmi. Write a short description of this event in 100-150 words. Answer: March 8th is celebrated every year as International Women’s day. The reason we celebrate this day is to honour women and to recognise their contribution to the. family, society and nation.

Rotary Club of our city organized a celebration to honour some women achievers. Those honoured included Kiran Bedi, the Magsaysay award winner, Sharmila Tagore, the Chairperson of the Censor Board and Shabana Azmi, a woman activist and a great actor.

Ms Bedi exhorted the young girls to repel any untoward advances to them. She further said that the whole state machinery is with them. Ms Tagore asked the girls to study hard, because it is education that will give them confidence. Ms Azmi advised the ladies to come forward and join the mainstream of the society.

All these women pledged to work for the upliftment of women of this country.

The students find her to be a strict teacher. My mother likes helping her students and guiding them, but does not tolerate disorderliness and bad mannerisms. 

Q2. You attended the Annual Function held at your sister’s school. Describe the event in 100-120 words.

Ans. On 16th December, I attended the Annual Function held at my sister’s school. The Annual Function was biblical-themed. Classes 6th to 11th were involved in the event. I attended the event with my mother and father. The event took place in the school auditorium at 4 p.m. The event started with a speech from the Principal and the choir’s performance. Then came the various plays, dance performances and musicals. None of us had read the bible before, but the narration was crystal clear, which enabled us to understand most of the context behind the plays and musicals. My sister acted as a saint. The function was fun and we learnt a lot about the Bible. 

Q3. You were giving an exam when the invigilator caught two of your classmates cheating. Describe the situation in 100-120 words.

Ans. On September 14th, I had my Physics exam, the subject the majority of us are scared of. Nevertheless, my classmates and I sat down to give our best. Cheating is performed expertly by my classmates. However, this time the invigilator was a harsh and sharp teacher. Everyone knew not to cheat, but of course two students were willing to take the risk. They were caught. Their papers were seized and were ordered to get up and move to the Principal’s room for further action. Upon hearing this, one of them got a panic attack. The invigilator called another invigilator, then the class teacher. Soon, it was chaos. Everyone was distracted by the situation.

Ans. My best friend’s name is Meena Goel. She is the same age as me. She has been studying in the same school, class and section as me for five years. We are in 9th class now. She is 5 foot 4 inches tall and weighs about 55 kg. She is skinny and has a fair complexion. Her hair is wavy and brown in colour. She has dark brown eyes. She has a mischievous smile. She talks a lot and is frequently scolded for the same. However, despite that, she is good at keeping secrets. She is an extrovert. She likes indulging in parties and travelling. She loves watching Hollywood movies. I am grateful to have her as my best friend.

Interest: To produce a biography will require sustained writing from the student. That’s why students must choose their subject well. After all, a biography is an account of someone’s entire life to date. Students must ensure they choose a subject that will sustain their interest throughout the research, writing, and editing processes.

Merit: Closely related to the previous point, students must consider whether the subject merits the reader’s interest. Aside from pure labors of love, writing should be undertaken with the reader in mind. While producing a biography demands sustained writing from the author, it also demands sustained reading from the reader.

An effective way to approach the research process is to:

1. Compile a chronological timeline of the central facts, dates, and events of the subject’s life

2. Compile detailed descriptions of the following personal traits:

  •      Character traits
  •      Values and beliefs

3. Compile some research questions based on different topics to provide a focus for the research:

Researching for biography writing is an excellent way for students to hone their research skills in general. Developing good research skills is essential for future academic success. Students will have opportunities to learn how to:

  • Gather relevant information
  • Evaluate different information sources
  • Select suitable information
  • Organize information into a text.

Students will have access to print and online information sources, and, in some cases, they may also have access to people who knew or know the subject (e.g. biography of a family member).

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 1:

This session aims to give students a broader understanding of what makes a good biography.

Once your students have compiled a comprehensive checklist of the main features of a biography, allow them to use it to assess some biographies from your school library or on the internet using the feature checklist.

When students have assessed a selection of biographies, take some time as a class to discuss them. You can base the discussion around the following prompts:

  • Which biographies covered all the criteria from their checklist?
  • Which biographies didn’t?
  • Which biography was the most readable in terms of structure?
  • Which biography do you think was the least well-structured? How would you improve this?

Looking at how other writers have interpreted the form will help students internalize the necessary criteria before attempting to produce a biography. Once students have a clear understanding of the main features of the biography, they’re ready to begin work on writing a biography.

When the time does come to put pen to paper, be sure they’re armed with the following top tips to help ensure they’re as well prepared as possible.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 2:

This session aims to guide students through the process of selecting the perfect biography subject.

Instruct students to draw up a shortlist of three potential subjects for the biography they’ll write.

Using the three criteria mentioned in the writing guide (Interest, Merit, and Information), students award each potential subject a mark out of 5 for each of the criteria. In this manner, students can select the most suitable subject for their biography.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 3:

This session aims to get students into the researching phase, then prioritise and organise events chronologically.

Students begin by making a timeline of their subject’s life, starting with their birth and ending with their death or the present day. If the student has yet to make a final decision on the subject of their biography, a family member will often serve well for this exercise as a practice exercise.

Students should research and gather the key events of the person’s life, covering each period of their life from when they were a baby, through childhood and adolescence, right up to adulthood and old age. They should then organize these onto a timeline. Students can include photographs with captions if they have them.

They can present these to the class when they have finished their timelines.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 4:

Instruct students to look over their timeline, notes, and other research. Challenge them to identify three patterns that repeat throughout the subject’s life and sort all the related events and incidents into specific categories.

Students should then label each category with a single word. This is the thematic concept or the broad general underlying idea. After that, students should write a sentence or two expressing what the subject’s life ‘says’ about that concept.

This is known as the thematic statement . With the thematic concepts and thematic statements identified, the student now has some substantial ideas to explore that will help bring more profound meaning and wider resonance to their biography.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 5:

Instruct students to write a short objective account of an event in their own life. They can write about anyone from their past. It needn’t be more than a couple of paragraphs, but the writing should be strictly factual, focusing only on the objective details of what happened.

Once they have completed this, it’s time to rewrite the paragraph, but they should include some opinion and personal commentary this time.

The student here aims to inject some color and personality into their writing, to transform a detached, factual account into a warm, engaging story.

Writing a biography can be a fun challenge, where you are sharing the story of someone’s life with readers. You may need to write a biography for a class or decide to write one as a personal project. Once you have identified the subject of the biography, do your research so you know as much about them as possible. Then, dive into the writing of the biography and revising it until it is at its finest.

Researching Your Subject

Step 1 Ask the subject for permission to write the biography.

  • If the subject does not give you permission to write the biography, you may want to choose a different subject. If you decide to publish the biography without the subject’s permission, you may be susceptible to legal action by the subject.
  • If the subject is no longer alive, you obviously do not need to ask permission to write about them.

Step 2 Look for primary sources about the subject.

  • You may create research questions to help focus your research of the subject, such as, What do I find interesting about the subject? Why is this subject important to readers? What can I say that is new about the subject? What would I like to learn more about?

Step 3 Conduct interviews with the subject and those close to them.

  • For in person interviews, record them with a tape recorder or a voice recorder on your computer or phone.
  • You may need to interview the subject and others several times to get the material you need.

Step 4 Visit locations that are important to the subject.

  • You may also want to visit areas where the subject made a major decision or breakthrough in their life. Being physically in the area can give you a sense of how the subject might have felt and help you write their experiences more effectively.

Step 5 Study the time and place of the subject’s life.

  • When researching the time period ask yourself: What were the social norms of that time? What was going on economically and politically? How did the social and political climate affect the subject?

Step 6 Make a timeline...

  • You may also include historical events or moments that affected the subject on the timeline. For example, maybe there was a conflict or civil war that happened during the person’s life that affected their life.

Writing the Biography

Step 1 Go for a chronological structure.

  • You may end up focusing on particular areas of the person’s life. If you do this, work through a particular period in the person’s life chronologically.

Step 2 Create a thesis for the biography.

  • For example, you may have a thesis statement about focusing on how the person impacted the civil rights movement in America in the 1970s. You can then make sure all your content relates back to this thesis.

Step 3 Use flashbacks....

  • Flashbacks should feel as detailed and real as present day scenes. Use your research notes and interviews with the subject to get a good sense of their past for the flashbacks.
  • For example, you may jump from the person’s death in the present to a flashback to their favorite childhood memory.

Step 4 Focus on major events and milestones.

  • For example, you may focus on the person’s accomplishments in the civil rights movement. You may write a whole section about their contributions and participation in major civil rights marches in their hometown.

Step 5 Identify a major theme or pattern in the person’s life.

  • For example, you may notice that the person’s life is patterned with moments of adversity, where the person worked hard and fought against larger forces. You can then use the theme of overcoming adversity in the biography.

Step 6 Include your own opinions and thoughts about the person.

  • For example, you may note how you see parallels in the person’s life during the civil rights movement with your own interests in social justice. You may also commend the person for their hard work and positive impact on society.

Polishing the Biography

Step 1 Show the biography to others for feedback.

  • Revise the biography based on feedback from others. Do not be afraid to cut or edit down the biography to suit the needs of your readers.

Step 2 Proofread the biography.

  • Having a biography riddled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors can turn off your readers and result in a poor grade if you are handing in the text for a class.

Step 3 Cite all sources...

  • If the biography is for a class, use MLA , APA , or Chicago Style citations based on the preferences of your instructor.

The biography writing format is essentially putting together a chronological narrative of your subject’s life; this may be of an actual person or for fiction. 

Creating a fantastic biography is to write a story that captures the interviewer’s imagination and is interesting enough to pull a reader in. Writing a good biography can be achieved by following some of these rules. 

A well-written biography is a terrific way to promote yourself and your work online. Biographies can be written for personal websites, online portfolios , business websites, etc. If you feel like writing one – but don’t know where to start, this article is for you. 

Features of a perfect format on how to write the perfect biography: 

Writing a Biography – The Opener

A good biography serves as an introduction and invites readers to learn more about the person being written about. In this sense, the opening of a biography needs to be intense and captivating, much like the first paragraph of a novel. 

  • To set the tone for your biography, you could begin with a question that immediately captures your reader’s attention.  
  • For example:” Did you know that Michael Jackson’s pet chimp was named Bubbles? Or that he slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber?” 
  • The first paragraph of your biography should cover the basics, such as your name, your position, and a summary of your accomplishments.  
  • For example, “Jane Doe has been the CEO of ABC Company for 12 years. By successfully leading two different departments at ABC, she increased profits by 150 percent.” 
  • Don’t get too wordy in this opening paragraph. You want it to capture the attention of readers who are interested in learning more about you and not bore others to death by providing too many details upfront. 

Body paragraphs are the heart of your essay since you will be using the body to prove your thesis statement. Each paragraph should have at least 8-9 sentences in it. You can do more if you want, but no less. 

  • In each paragraph, you should begin with a new idea. This way, you will be able to show that you are capable of moving from one point to another throughout the paper. 
  • As much as possible, try not to repeat what you have already said before in the same paragraph or previous ones. If you do this a lot, it will become very uninteresting for your readers, who may decide not to finish reading. 
  • The second half of your author bio should be the longer, more detailed section. This is where you tell people what you do and how you can help them. 
  • Here’s where you’re going to want to use that “how I help” statement from earlier. Explain who you work with and what kind of problems you help them solve. 
  • Of course, if you’re writing for a general audience, it might not be practical for you to mention specific groups of people in this section. In that case, think about the overall goals or intentions of your readers. 
  • For example, if I were writing a biography for a business blog, I might write something like this.

Writing a Biography – The Background

To categorize the person’s background into a biography, you need answers to these questions: 

The beginning is the background of your subject –

  • Who are they?  
  • Where are they from?  
  • What kind of family did they grow up in?  
  • When did they start developing an interest in their field?  
  • How did they get their start at what they’re famous for now?  
  • What were their early successes and failures like? 

To get the answers, you will have to pay attention to the fellow person’s life a bit personally. You can interview his/her family members, colleagues, or friends to collect information.  

Personal Life

It is always good to start with the early years of the subject – childhood and adolescence – as these have a great impact on the person’s future life.  

  • Think of what has shaped his or her personality and try to find out if there were any significant events in their younger years that would eventually affect their adult life.  
  • The later years are often easier because there are more documents and records available for research purposes. 
  • You pay attention to the person’s childhood days, who he/she was closer to from the family, and what the person did as a kid.  
  • The details you mention may include his/her interests or hobbies that he developed during the person’s childhood or anything related, which is worth mentioning in the biography.  
  • You can also mention any events that impacted him during his childhood or teenage years (either negative or positive).  
  • You should write about what kind of person he was before reaching adulthood and what changes occurred after that, making him who he is today.  
  • This helps understand the person’s personality better. 

Significant Events/Achievements

The best format will be a chronological listing of significant events and/or achievements.  

  • The events can either be listed in order of occurrence or importance.  
  • Teachers usually assign this type of biography when the student is asked to write about someone who has influenced him or her in some way. 
  • An alternative to a chronological listing of events is to focus on a single event that changed the person’s life and write about it in depth.  
  • This type of biography is often written as part of a job application when the applicant wants to highlight one accomplishment that sets him apart from others applying for the same position.

In the end, writing a biography comes down to telling your subject’s story. The order of the stages is not that important as long as the most important facts are included. It is a more creative than analytical process. It’s more about capturing someone’s essence than compiling a dry list of their accomplishments. And it’s not as difficult as it seems.

3. Create your own Bio-Cube. Be sure to use a biography you will not be assigning to students. Note that you will use this sample Bio-Cube in Sessions 2 and 3 as you guide students in using the online tool and also as you model writing a brief biographical sketch.

Session 1: Introduction to Biography Writers’ Workshop (60 minutes)

If you have chosen to do the biography activity suggested in the Preparation section (see Step 1), do so before beginning this session.

1. Ask students what they know about biographies and record their responses. Have students brainstorm a list of the types of people usually profiled in a biography, including some common characteristics that biography subjects share. Encourage students to brainstorm their own short lists of contemporary or historical figures, reminding them that a biography might explore the life of a president, musician, author, athlete, scientist-or any real person. Ask them to recall figures from social studies topics or books they have studied in class and to consider any contemporary newsmakers they know something about.  

2. Explain to students that they will be writing very short biographical sketches and that they will need to concentrate on providing the most interesting and significant information about their subjects. The goal is to write something informational that others will enjoy reading. This sketch is to be no more than one page in length, and it should begin with a clear and engaging opening paragraph. Discuss the elements of a good introductory paragraph, tailoring the detail to your students' needs. Stress that the paragraph should:

3. Explain to students that a writers' workshop is a great way to experiment with their own writing and to give and receive valuable writing feedback. Mention that the biographical sketches they write will be shared with each other and eventually published in class. Explain that the workshop will consist of class discussions, in-class writing periods, readings and evaluations of individual works, and the publishing of each writer's sketch.

4. Label a piece of chart paper or a list on the chalkboard "A biographical sketch should..." and have students discuss and reach agreement about the elements a sketch should include. Responses should include some form of the following:

You may wish to conduct a brief review about what constitutes a reliable source, emphasizing encyclopedias, printed biographies, and-of particular interest for use with this lesson-the websites you have screened and recommended for students (see Resources and Preparation, Step 4). Remind students that they will share their sketches with the class, so their peers are the audience. Tell them to keep in mind the types of things their classmates or other kids their age would most like to read about their subjects.

5. Share one or two selected examples of short, student-created biographical sketches from the website (see Preparation, Step 5). Highlight examples of clear writing, interesting information, major topics covered, accuracy, good writing style, proper use of grammar and mechanics and funny or surprising tidbits. Be sure to also point out a few excellent models of an engaging opening paragraph.

Session 2: Project Research (30–45 minutes)

1. Have students use the biography websites to select a contemporary or historical figure. Encourage them to look up two or three people that interest them and select the one they are most interested in writing about. You will want to provide students with guidance about how to select a subject. For example, you can briefly discuss tips such as choosing a person about which they are really interested in learning, a person that others will find intriguing, a person that most people have heard of, a person who is lesser known but unique in some way, and so on. Each student should report his or her chosen subject to you and then enter the selection on the posted in the room. (Allow duplicate subject selections at your own discretion.)

You will want to briefly meet with any students having difficulty making a choice and offer ideas based on your knowledge of those students' interests. You can also refer them to the . You may also wish to make the list available to all students, either by distributing copies or posting it in the room.  

2. Introduce students to the and walk them through the steps of filling it out. Prompts within the tool ask students to name a subject and then describe the person's significance, obstacle faced, background, and personality. There is also a prompt to add any famous quotations attributed to the subject. Show students the completed Bio-Cube you created in preparation of the lesson (see Step 3).

3. Students should spend additional time before the next session researching their subjects using the online websites recommended. They should summarize what they have learned-and what they want to write about-using the online Bio-Cube tool. Encourage students to focus on including the main points they want to cover in their sketches. The finished Bio-Cube printout should be cut out and folded into a cube shape to be used as a quick reference tool during writing exercises.

Session 3: Writing Practice and Sharing (60 minutes)

1. Spend a minute or two inviting students to discuss their research. What did they learn about researching biographies using the ? What did they learn about what makes an interesting biography subject?

2. Invite two or three volunteers to share their completed Bio-Cubes in class. Ask them to explain briefly how they chose the information they recorded and what they liked about using the Bio-Cube to organize their facts.

3. Discuss the writing process and establish the purpose for the writers' workshop. First, tell students that they will be writing their first drafts using what they remember from their research and the information on their Bio-Cube outlines. Then remind them that this is a writers' workshop. That means they will share their writing with others to receive feedback. It also means that they will need to be ready to give feedback on others' writing. Explain that many professional writers engage in this process both as they learn their craft and as they continue to improve their skills throughout their lives.

4. Discuss some basic expectations for the biography sketch with students: writing to the appropriate audience; providing interesting, relevant information about their subject; and writing to an agreed-upon target length (suggest a length of approximately one lined notebook page). Distribute the sample so that students can refer to it as they write. This rubric reinforces the discussion about writing goals and the elements of a biographical sketch, and it allows students to self-assess their work.

5. Model the writing process by beginning to draft a short biographical sketch of your own. Refer to your Bio-Cube, and think aloud as you write your draft on a transparency. Reread as you go and explain any changes you make. Reasons for making changes may include:

6. Start the in-class writing time so students can write first drafts of their biographical sketches. As students write, walk around the classroom and provide feedback to individuals on the content you see. These miniconferences should take just one or two minutes each; use the time to quickly assess progress and offer encouragement and focused help. Comment on particularly interesting tidbits, ask leading questions as appropriate, and prompt students to refer to the rubric as necessary. Suggested time for this portion of the session is 20-30 minutes.

7. Bring the writing time to a close. Assure students that they do not yet need to have their sketches complete. Have them share their work with a partner, and instruct each listener to tell two things he or she likes about the partner's sketch and also tell one thing he or she would still like to know about the subject. Model this type of feedback before students begin sharing.

8. When everyone has shared, ask a few volunteers to talk about what they liked about the session. Then encourage students to reflect on what they might like to accomplish during the revision process. Tell them to think about it on their own and be prepared to share goals at the beginning of Session 4.

Session 4: Revision and Reflection (60 minutes)

1. Begin this session by modeling the process of editing and revising a draft using the sketch you wrote during Session 3. Display your draft using the overhead projector. Read aloud your writing to students. Reread it a few times, stopping to make changes (and explaining them as you go, using the same think-aloud technique from Session 3, Step 5). Make your revisions to create a new draft that is close to final form.

2. Have students begin revising their sketches. Tell them to reread their drafts, pick up the writing where they left off, incorporate their partners' feedback, complete the writing, and then reread and revise until they are satisfied that the writing is clear and the sketch meets all the criteria on the . Ask them to check off each item on the rubric list as they prepare their final drafts. As students work, conduct another round of miniconferences to help guide and encourage them. Suggested time for this portion of the session is 30 minutes.

3. Bring the writing time to a close, and model for students how to give positive and supportive feedback on others' compositions. Briefly comment on two or three student pieces, being sure to pick out elements from which everyone can learn. For example: "Listen to the first line of Ben's biographical sketch of Christopher Columbus-it will really catch your attention." Or, "Kaylee gave a great description of Jeff Gordon's childhood." For each element on which you comment, be sure to ask the student author to read aloud the corresponding line or passage.

4. Have each student select and read aloud a favorite line or short passage from his or her sketch. After each reading, invite one audience member to offer positive feedback.

Session 5: Proofreading and Publishing (60 minutes)

1. Tell students that this session will be spent proofreading and publishing final versions of their biographical sketches.

2. Emphasize how important proofreading is to the writing process and that it must be completed before they can publish their final drafts. Distribute copies of the so students understand the tasks. Explain that they need to read through their sketches looking for the types of minor errors listed on the sheet. They should note corrections on their drafts. Tell students that you are available to answer any questions they have as they proofread. Have students turn in their checklists as they complete them.

3. Show students how to publish upon completion of the proofreading process. This entails neatly writing their biographical sketches on heavy writing or construction paper. Remind them that their published works will be displayed in class and hint that they will also use them for the final workshop session.

Homework: Before the next session, students who did not complete the publishing process should finish. Also, all students should conduct a practice reading of their finished sketches.

Session 6: Author Readings and Celebration (60 minutes)

1. Welcome students to the final session of the writers' workshop. Ask students whether they have ever seen an author reading at school, the public library, or a bookstore. Have a few volunteers briefly share their experiences. Explain that each "author" in the class will give a reading of his or her published biographical sketch.

2. Have each student read aloud his or her sketch to the class. For the readings, consider arranging students' desks in a circle and having the authors present from behind a podium. As time permits, allow audience members to pose a question or two to each author. Be sure to encourage applause at the end of each author's reading.

3. Once all authors have given readings, post the published sketches in the room. You may wish to invite a younger class to come in and view your authors' work.
