PhD Recreation and Leisure Studies

Improving lives through research in recreation and leisure

The PhD program provides opportunities for advanced study and research in the field of Recreation and Leisure Studies.

The degree culminates in the completion of a doctoral thesis, which is expected to make an original and substantial contribution to knowledge in areas such as sport, therapeutic recreation, tourism and events. Students are also provided with opportunities for teaching and research assistantships, and are encouraged to participate in undergraduate teaching.

Program overview

The primary objectives of the program are to foster each student's ability to:

  • conduct high calibre research and to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in the field
  • analyze and evaluate programs, policies and organizational structures aimed at understanding and improving the use of free time and quality of life
  • apply and disseminate this knowledge to practitioners, policy makers and managers

The doctoral program is designed for students who plan to teach and/or pursue research careers. It provides a training opportunity for students seeking careers as scholars, researchers, and policy analysts for government, private sector and university positions.

By combining theory and practice, we are deepening our understanding of the positive and negative aspects of leisure and developing new ways to enhance quality of life for individuals, families and communities.

Our  faculty members  are active scholars recognized for the high quality and quantity of their published work, in a variety of areas in the field including:

The PhD program may be completed either on a full- or part-time basis, but must be completed within the following time periods from completion of the master's degree, unless an extension has been granted  (see Graduate Studies Calendar for more information) :

  • 12 terms | 4 years (full-time from master's level)
  • 18 terms | 8 years (part-time from master's level)
  • Doctoral thesis

The PhD program requires a minimum of 9 graduate courses (0.5 unit weight each) beyond the Honours BA level. For full details - including  course descriptions  - see the  Graduate Studies Academic Calendar .

Students entering the PhD program following completion of the MA degree in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (University of Waterloo), or an equivalent, will typically have already completed 5 of the 9 required courses, and therefore will need a minimum of 4 additional (0.5 unit weight) graduate courses.

Student evaluation

A review of each student's progress takes place during the month of May each year. Students are evaluated on several criteria, i.e., coursework and resulting grades, progress with regard to the comprehensive examination and thesis work and, where appropriate, reports submitted by the students regarding their research and teaching assistantship activity. A grade average of at least 75% must be maintained.

PhD comprehensive examinations

The purpose of the  comprehensive examinations  is to ensure that doctoral candidates have a broad and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the field of Recreation and Leisure Studies, including: 1) different methodological and analytical approaches used in the field, and 2) the broad substantive areas of leisure studies. The process is designed to enable candidates to develop a solid grounding in and understanding of leisure studies. This then provides a foundation for the critical analysis demanded by the dissertation proposal and final defence. The comprehensive examination consists of one written and one oral examination, and the process will normally be completed over a period of six months.

A  PhD thesis proposal  is required of all PhD students after passing the comprehensive examinations, and before proceeding to data collection. The proposal should contain a detailed statement of the research problem and its significance for a body of leisure-related theory, a precise account of the methodology or research techniques to be employed, plus a detailed outline of the proposed data analyses. The candidate will be required to present and defend this proposal before the thesis committee. The final thesis report based on the completed research must also be successfully defended to satisfy the thesis requirement.

Finding a graduate supervisor

Applicants will be asked to identify a faculty supervisor on their application.

  • Review  faculty profiles above to learn about research activity and expertise. Prior to applying, reach out to potential supervisors to inquire about whether they are accepting new students to supervise and discuss research interests. 
  • Admitted students are assigned a graduate supervisor who will assist with matters relating to their program of study. Should a student’s interests change during their studies, the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies will work to support them in finding a new supervisor.

Financial support in the form of teaching and/or research assistantships are provided for full time students during their four years. In addition, PhD students are normally provided with at least one opportunity to teach an undergraduate course. Students are encouraged to apply for  scholarships and other forms of financial assistance  as well.

MSc Tourism and Hospitality program at a glance:

Program format

The focus of this two-year program is to develop a thorough understanding of the leading theories that underpin the multi-disciplinary nature of tourism and hospitality. The program consists of six taught graduate courses, three of which are core/compulsory and three are ‘restricted electives’, plus the thesis proposal and defence.

Admission requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission:

  • International applicants should use  this guide  to compare their academic credentials and determine the grade equivalency needed.
  • 2 references, with an option for a third reference. Our preference is for academic references, but professional ones may be substituted if appropriate;
  • Applications without GMAT or GRE scores will be considered incomplete and may not be reviewed for admission until a score is provided.  
  • Applicants who completed a post-secondary degree from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand may request that this requirement be waived. This request will be reviewed by the graduate selection committee, who may ask for an interview and/or supplementary documentation in their consideration.

  • January 15 -- submission of the  online application form
  • February 1 -- submission of all required supporting documents

This 31-week program consists of 12 weeks of co-op placement in a related sector where you will learn hospitality management and associated skills from industry experts. The program is powered by innRoad and offered through 12 weeks of in-class learning and 12 weeks of co-op learning.

This one-year program powered by innRoad and Knowledge Matters focuses on providing necessary skills for hotel management like teamwork, exceptional hospitality knowledge and more through theoretical knowledge along with supervised practical training. It is offered through 24 weeks of in-class and 24 weeks of co-op placement.

The Diploma in International Hospitality Operations Management Co-op Program is a two-year program designed to prepare students for a career in a variety of roles in Hospitality Operations Management. Students will gain the knowledge and business skills required to be progressive leaders within the fast-paced global hospitality industry, with an emphasis on Canadian tourism.

Eligibility requirements for hotel management courses in Toronto

Computer Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows-based desktop or laptop that meets or exceeds the following general requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop running on an updated Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 11 recommended).
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory (note that 16 GB memory is strongly recommended).
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone, and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities. A minimum download speed of 10 – 50 Mbps is recommended.

Niagara College may not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications as provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.

Note: We do not provide support for Chromebooks or Apple products. ( learn more )

The technology requirements indicate there is no support for Chromebooks or Apple products. Can I still take my program if I have a Macbook or Chromebook?

For most programs, the recommendation is to have a MS Windows 11 computer for an optimal experience and for ease of downloading academic software. The reliability of remote connections to college computers and software cannot be guaranteed for Macbook and Chromebook users.

The Microsoft Office suite products that are available free to Niagara College students though Office 365 do have versions that work with Macbooks and Chromebooks, and most internet-based applications will work as well. However, some program-specific software is designed to run on Windows 10/11, and the successful download of these applications cannot be guaranteed.

Our Learning Management System (LMS) at Niagara College is Brightspace, and while students can access Brightspace through an internet browser, for some assignments and tests there is a layer of security that uses a proctored browser. The proctored browser will not function on Macbooks or Chromebooks.

Students assume the risk of a compromised virtual experience if they choose to participate without the recommended technology.

Your tuition estimation includes tuition, ancillary, and material fees based on a program and term. Fees may vary upon enrolment into specific courses that are outside of the core curriculum or elective courses. Fees for future terms (where fees have yet to be published) are estimates based on the current academic year fee structure.

*Apostille countries refers to an international form of a notary seal as certified by the Hague convention. These would be official notary documents from countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. and can be accepted in place of original or school-certified documents. The Apostille is prepared by either the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Justice in these countries.

If you are accepted into a program, you will receive a letter of offer in your myCapU email inbox.

  • This deposit will go towards your first-semester tuition once you are registered for courses at CapU.

Receive letter of acceptance and apply for a study permit

After paying your tuition deposit, you will receive a letter of acceptance in your myCapU inbox. This may be used to apply for, or renew, a study permit.

  • Depending on your citizenship, you may also need to apply for an entry visa.

This Graduate Certificate program in Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management is designed for university and college graduates seeking a career in the tourism and hospitality sector. The program will focus on hospitality operations within a global economy, encompassing leadership, management, and operations of hospitality and tourism businesses of varying sizes and complexity.

The program consists of three semesters including a paid internship semester, where students can apply their knowledge in the field. You will have the opportunity to network with industry partners in hotels, restaurants and tourism organizations, and will learn from industry professionals with proven leadership and relevant hospitality experience. 

Located steps away from hospitality businesses in our London Downtown Campus, you’ll be surrounded by tourism and hospitality industry partners in a dynamic learning environment. Develop the knowledge and skills to work in hotels, restaurants, tourism and travel companies and retirement residences in North America. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for first-line supervisory and management roles. This program is also available at Fanshawe's Toronto location.

The Human Resource department is critical to the success of hospitality & tourism operation. You will learn key Canadian & Ontario legislations that govern employers and employees in Ontario. Students will gain knowledge in; recruitment, retention, training and development, performance management, benefit management, occupational health and safety, union management, and dispute resolution. Through the use of case studies students will put into practice skills required to manage and motivate team members by building the employer and employee relationship.

Emerging tourism and hospitality professionals must recognize that customer sales and service skills are key to this very competitive industry. In this course, students will cover the key concepts, fundamental skills and techniques needed to manage customer expectations in the tourism and hospitality industry to create customer-focused priorities.

This course will introduce post-graduate level international students to communication within the Canadian workplace. Topics to be covered will include verbal, non-verbal and written communications, with a focus on cultural differences. In this course, students will learn how to create basic workplace messages (including social media), engage in workplace conversations, organize workplace meetings, and deliver informal presentations. Instruction will emphasize the importance of tone, audience, purpose, body language, word choice, and grammar in the Canadian context. Through group work, students will develop interpersonal strategies for common face-to-face workplace interactions. By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently engage in basic communication with co-workers, clients and customers in the Canadian workplace.

An introduction to the Canadian tourism and hospitality industry. Students will explore the various sectors and service levels in Canada with an emphasis on the natural, cultural heritage and recreational resources. Students will become familiar with the Ontario Travel Industry Act, define terms, legal requirements and processes required to work in an Ontario Travel Agency. Upon completion of this course, students will be eligible to complete the TICO certification required to sell travel products in Ontario.
FDMG-6020Canadian Food & Beverage Operation3
Students will learn the fundamentals of the Canadian food & beverage industry. With a focus on professional hospitality service, students will practice basic service and communication skills required for quick service to fine dining. Students will be introduced to the business aspect of service including POS training, legal requirements and health & safety regulations. Students will complete provincial certifications required including: Smart Service and Food Safe Handling.
COMP-6056Hospitality Technology3
This practical course develops technology skills required for hospitality supervisory and management positions. Students will create professional documents, create spreadsheets using formulas, mail merge and use other applications to produce professional documents. Students will also apply technology skills in collaborative sharing platforms, business social media and Desktop publishing to prepare and execute an effective presentation.

Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission consideration; subject to competition individual programs may require higher prerequisite grades and/or higher overall averages:
