Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Department of Zoology

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £29,605 to £33,966
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 5th July 2024
Closes: 25th July 2024
Job Ref: PF42223

Location: Central Cambridge

The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits (4C) is dedicated to using a digital approach to direct climate finance to where it is most needed. We're seeking a motivated individual to join our interdisciplinary team. If you have excellent critical thinking skills, experience in coding, and a passion for nature conservation, we want to hear from you.

As a Research Assistant, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on developing analytical approaches to produce unambiguous evaluations of conservation and restoration impact. These approaches combine open-source algorithms with data from remotely deployed satellites and sensors. Your role includes evaluating project impacts by collating pertinent data, developing software, running statistical analyses and presenting results in various formats.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate project design documents meticulously, collating and curating pertinent data and narrative information.
  • Assess project performance by using and developing 4C's digital methods.
  • Prepare reports for the centre's head of science and other stakeholders, facilitating the expansion of climate change mitigation through the conservation and restoration of nature.
  • Collaborate within the centre and with external stakeholders to refine assessments.
  • Work closely with team members to automate reproducible data collection and analysis.

Project Background and Aims:

Carbon credits are a vital mechanism for financing the conservation and restoration of natural habitats, mitigating global climate change, and protecting biodiversity. However, the adoption of nature-based carbon credits faces challenges due to the lack of standardized, scalable, and transparent techniques. The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits (4C) aims to address this by evaluating real-world carbon credit projects.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Relevant Bachelors or Masters in science, or another quantitative / analytical subject
  • A passion for nature in the context of solving the climate crises
  • Ability to carefully and critically evaluate reports
  • Proficiency in handling various data types, including tabular and geospatial data.
  • Computer programming experience including command line and statistical software such as R or Python.
  • An understanding of the principals of reproducible research methods (e.g. version control, GitHub).
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems
  • Experience of statistical analysis and scientific writing
  • Good organisation and time management skills
  • A proactive approach to seeking guidance
  • Ability to communicate research findings clearly in oral and written formats to collaborators and other members of the group

The Entomological Society of America is seeking candidates to serve in the position of editor-in-chief of the Journal of Integrated Pest Management (JIPM) for a four-year term beginning in January 2025.

JIPM is an open access, peer-reviewed extension journal covering the field of integrated pest management. The journal is multi-disciplinary in scope, publishing articles in all pest management disciplines, including entomology, nematology, plant pathology, weed science, and more.

The objective of JIPM is to target a non-technical audience with high-quality articles supported with published references. The intended readership for JIPM is anyone engaged in any aspect of integrated pest management, including, but not limited to, farmers and ranchers, consultants, extension professionals, retailers, manufacturers and suppliers of pest management products, educators, foresters, animal and human health professionals, and pest control operators. The journal does not publish articles based on original, unpublished research. JIPM launched in 2010 and regularly publishes some of ESA’s most downloaded papers.

The search committee will welcome joint co-editor-in-chief applications as well as individual applications, with both being assessed equally. Women, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and LGBTQ scientists, as well as scientists from intersecting groups and other underrepresented or minoritized groups, are encouraged to apply.

General Qualifications The ideal candidate(s) should have significant experience in the writing, editing, and reviewing of scientific research or extension-focused manuscripts. A comprehensive background and broad experience are essential, especially experience involving extension or outreach work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership for the journal, working to ensure that articles published are of the highest quality and scientific interest, and that the peer review process proceeds smoothly.
  • Uphold the vision, scope, and policies of the journal and communicate those elements to authors, subject editors, and other stakeholders.
  • Screen initial submissions for quality and appropriateness of scope and assign appropriate manuscripts to subject editors, who manage the peer review and editing processes.
  • Personally assign reviewers and make accept/reject decisions when needed.
  • Recruit subject editors when needed, ensuring the group is diverse in expertise, geography, gender, race, ethnicity, and other measures of diversity.
  • In cases of potential author, reviewer, or editor misconduct, conduct initial investigations, as detailed in ESA’s publication ethics policy.
  • Act as an ambassador for the journal, encouraging and inviting submissions, promoting the journal, and advocating its objective.
  • Chair the JIPM Editorial Board, and attend other editor meetings as needed.

This is primarily a volunteer position, but the editor-in-chief will receive an honorarium and will be reimbursed for expenses, including registration and travel to ESA’s annual meeting. The initial appointment is for a term of four years. The expected workload is several hours per week, but varies with manuscript quality and quantity. Editors-in-chief receive significant support in the management and strategy of the journal from ESA staff, Oxford University Press, and publication volunteers.

How to Apply The deadline for applications is September 16, 2024 . Interested candidates should submit the following to [email protected]: cover letter describing their qualifications and vision and goals for the journal; curriculum vitae; and reprints of two published articles that best represent the candidate’s work. A search committee of JIPM editors and ESA Publications Council members will review all applications, conduct interviews, and submit a recommendation to the ESA Governing Board for approval.
