Every campaign website should include a candidate biography page . It’s a section where you can tell voters about yourself and why you are running for office.
Who are you? Begin with some background information about yourself. Try to include some qualities that separate you from your opposition. Keep it positive and perhaps touch on some issues that are of concern to voters.
Dig deep to into your background reveal what truly makes you unique and qualified for the position.
What experiences in your personal, professional or political life have helped shape you and made you the person you are today? Discuss your education, job titles, community and civic work, awards and other offices you’ve held. How do those experiences translate into being a better candidate for the position you are running? Don’t just create a laundry list of accomplishments, but work your experience into a larger narrative. Make your biography statements informative and educational.
For example, if you’re running for city council and have successfully lobbied for environmentally friendly policies in the past, this sets you apart as a forward-thinking candidate.
Opt for a positive tone. This isn’t the place for mudslinging or making negative comments about your opponents. Focus on your own accomplishments and vision.
A little bit about you personally goes a long way. Voters want to know about you, but maybe not every detail of your life. Include some photos and even video for the page. Include both personal and professional content that helps provide a rounded idea of who you are.
You may want to include any endorsements you’ve secured. Have you won awards or been recognized by community organizations. Use those outside sources to help sell you. It’s easy to say great things about yourself, but when someone else does it, it carries a lot more weight.
What do you want to accomplish during your time in office? Perhaps your goals can relate to previous accomplishments in your life. Use some examples if you can. Take a situation, describe how you handled it, and use it as a template for this section.
Take an issue profile and expand on it. What are your solutions or plans for tackling the issue? How do your plans differ from your opponent or the way the issue is being handled presently? Draw connections between your past accomplishments and your current goals:
Finish your candidate biography with a strong statement about your purpose for running and what you hope to accomplish in the office you seek. Be inspirational. Be specific in what issues you hope to tackle. Leave the reader knowing that you deserve their vote.
Some candidates prefer to write about themselves in the third person. Other prefer a first person narrative (“I” and “me”). While first person may come across as more personal, that format is not very useful if you are trying to optimize your content for the search engines.Writing in the third person gives you plenty of opportunity to use your full name, which can help your material appear in search engine results for your name.
Have others that you trust read drafts of all your site content to check for grammar, spelling and content. Others will see your work with fresh eyes and be able to provide valuable feedback.
The candidate biography you finished writing should now be broken down. You’ll need a more succinct version, or an “elevator pitch”. Your elevator pitch will be a succinct summary of who you are and what you intend to accomplish in office. It’s just enough so that someone will quickly know the bare minimum about you. Make is very short and easily memorizable, so it shouldn’t be longer than 20 seconds or so.

The candidate statement is the chance each person has to explain why they are the right person for the job, why voters should cast their ballots in favor of the candidate and what the candidate sees as the future of the organization.

As thorough as candidate bios and statements can be at introducing voters to the slate of candidates on the ballot, not everyone will end up reading through those materials. That is where candidate videos become a valuable resource.

A good biography should answer two questions: who are you and why are you good for this job?
You should place your name first in your biography. Even though it seems simple, your name should appear throughout your biography several times. It not only helps voters to learn your name, but it also helps Google recognize your website is the result people need to find when they search your name. The best way of doing this is writing the biography in the third person.
This biography is an introduction of yourself as the political candidate to the voters. So you should focus on your background and a little on the issues that made you want to run.
You can start with your connection to the area, maybe you moved to town to raise your family, maybe you have lived here your whole life. People trust people that they know, so how would your voters know you?
Your current job and why it would prepare you to be a good public servant are good places to start. If you own a store or small business, you may have some insight into local regulations or tax laws. You may be a teacher and familiar with the changes that need to be made at the administrative level of the school district.
What else makes you a good candidate for the job? This is a place to discuss your education, your community and civic work, and previous offices you may have held. Describe how your experiences qualify you for the job. Make sure you do not just list bullet points, but use short paragraphs (like the ones in this article).
A biography can be a good place to mention endorsements you’ve received, awards you’ve received, or if you’ve been recognized by community organizations. If you list every single accomplishment in your biography, it will appear cluttered and hard to read. Don’t just list these accomplishments, weave them into a story when you share them.
In addition, this is an opportunity to demonstrate your values instead of telling us about them. If faith is a big part of your motivation for running, you can share your volunteer work or leadership in your church. In the case of running on the basis of family values, you can highlight your time on the PTA of your children’s school or your free time spent teaching computer classes at the community center. You shouldn’t just list your values, but also demonstrate how you embody them. For conservative voters, actions speak louder than words.
Another question that should be answered by reading this biography is what do you want to accomplish during your time in office? You can cover these more in your issues section, but people really want to know: what’s in it for the voter? How will your work make a difference in the community and the lives of the voter?
It is important to distinguish yourself from the other candidates. You should only talk about yourself and your family. So, you can include some qualities that separate yourself from your opposition but above all else keep things positive.
Computers and readers both like lots of breaks in between text so try and keep your paragraphs just a few sentences long. This is not an English Literature assignment, and you don’t need to spend pages and pages with complex sentence structure to tell your story.
Don’t pend too much time stressing about your biography. If you wind up spending more than 30 min writing a biography you’re overthinking it. Time spent worrying about the website is time that will be better spent knocking on doors and talking to voters. This section is a modified stump speech, an elevator pitch, an introduction at a work meeting. It doesn’t need to be longer than a few hundred words if that’s all you can think to write.
Make sure you have someone read through your biography for grammar and misspelled words. Another set of fresh eyes will usually see something you missed. This is your first introduction to some potential voters, you don’t want virtual spinach in your teeth.
End your statement on a strong note. Be inspirational or give the voters an action. Leave the reader knowing why you deserve their vote on Election Day. Don’t be afraid to say it outright: “John Doe needs your vote this November.”

But don’t worry too much: You don’t have to be the Simone Biles of LinkedIn to write a professional bio. We’ve gathered the steps, template, examples, and bonus tips you’ll need to write a bio for any occasion.
We’ll get to the good stuff shortly (read: the template and examples), but before you put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, there are a few things you should know—about yourself.
Your bio shouldn’t be a laundry list of accomplishments, but a window into the person behind the accolades. You’re more than your most recent position (especially if you have a trendy startup title; I’m looking at you, ninjas and rock stars), so think about the strengths that make you good at what you do and the qualities that make you unique. These are what you want the person reading your bio to come away knowing.
If you’re drawing a blank, try to answer these questions before you start writing:

The template below is designed to help you write a “master” professional bio that you can then tweak for different situations. This template is meant to offer you a general framework only—if you find that you need to add an extra couple of sentences or determine that a section we’ve included doesn’t feel relevant to how you wish to present yourself, feel free to tweak it.

Here’s an example of how this template could look filled in:
Matthew Chang is a social media manager who excels at creating campaigns and posts for nonprofits that make followers take action by combining strong writing and design with insights about the org’s audience. Matthew believes that the right post, seen at the right time, can inspire people who believe in a nonprofit’s mission to help the causes they care about and ultimately allow that org to make a bigger impact.
Matthew has driven more than 10,000 social-influenced donations to three different nonprofits, with over $200,000 raised for important causes. Currently they’re working with GoodBoyGirl dog rescue to inspire not only donations, but also pet adoptions through Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok posts. (Matthew is always happy to share pictures of dogs they’ve helped find forever homes!)
Matthew holds a HubSpot Social Media Certification, and has taken several graphic design courses through The New School. They hold a bachelor’s degree from UCLA where they double majored in marketing and English.

Now that you have your “master professional bio,” you’ll want to tweak it for different situations.
For each iteration of your bio, imagine a specific reader and what they’d want to know about you, and then write for them. For instance, let’s say you’re on an alumni panel for your college. Student attendees will want to know what they should be doing now to get the career you have. In this case, your bio should reflect less of your day-to-day work responsibilities and more of the past campus activities, classes, and early-career internships and jobs that led you to where you are.
We’ve outlined specific advice for some of the most common scenarios where you’ll need to write a professional bio below—along with examples.
Start by identifying how you use—or would like to use— LinkedIn . Are you content with your job, but looking to expand your network? Are you trying to attract recruiters?
Whatever you’re seeking, your LinkedIn summary should support your activity on the site; a profile focused on networking within the industry will read differently than that of someone aggressively hunting for a new job. Once you’ve identified your purpose, it will be much easier to tweak the above template for your LinkedIn summary. You’ll still want to lead with your position and other info from the first paragraph of the bio template. Then move onto whatever skills or accomplishments are most relevant to your LinkedIn goals. Last, share those goals.
Here’s an example of a LinkedIn summary that follows this strategy:
As a field sales manager with over eight years of experience driving market share growth in designated territories, I have mastered the ins and outs of pharmaceutical sales and territorial prospecting. After honing and executing these specialties to reach numerous company goals, I was honored with an invitation to join the National Marketing Council. Now, I spend the majority of my time brainstorming sales strategies and connecting with other industry professionals who are interested in talking shop.
You can always add supporting content on either side of this skeleton paragraph, such as a personal anecdote, previous positions, or a mission statement. If you need a bit more inspiration, look to your recommendations for outside opinions on what makes you special.

Even a snappy, 160-character bio can help set you apart. To write a great bio for social media, grab the first two sentences of the bio we just drafted. We’ve crammed a lot of great info in there: who you are, what you do, who you do it for, how you do it, and what you believe about the work you do. Then make sure you’re stating it as succinctly as possible. Finally, squeeze in your pizazz. Key word: squeeze. Don’t focus on unrelated quirks or superfluous details.
For example:
Software engineering whiz @Belly spreading nuggets of coding gold related to mobile applications. 8-year member of @IEEEorg, aspiring member of The Avengers.
If you’re looking to create a more serious social presence, though, you may choose to leave out the pizazz while including all the same important info:
Proud 8-year member of @IEEEorg and lead software engineer @Belly. Passionate about innovations in coding and mobile applications.
A bio for your company website (like on a team or staff page) is where you can opt out of some standard details, such as your title, in favor of things that distinguish you as a pro (or a person). After all, anyone reading this knows where you work and your job title will likely be listed by default. So you can use the second and third paragraph of the template to craft a bio focused on what makes you unique.

Over America’s long history of presidential elections, campaigns have used a wide array of media and marketing gimmicks to sell their candidates to the public. From corny campaign jingles to candidate-themed merchandise, here are seven tactics that American presidential campaigns have used to get out their message.
The 1840 presidential election was the first “modern” election, replete with catchy campaign slogans, rousing campaign songs and a proliferation of candidate-themed novelty items.
The candidates in 1840 were incumbent Democrat Martin Van Buren versus William Henry Harrison of the new Whig party. The Democrats made a fateful error when they tried to paint Harrison as a rustic simpleton who drank hard cider and lived in a log cabin. In a stroke of image-making genius, the Whigs turned the intended insult into a major selling point for Harrison.
Harrison became the “hard cider and log cabin” candidate—a man of the people—while the Whigs successfully cast Van Buren as “Van Ruin,” a rich, out-of-touch aristocrat. In reality, Harrison was the wealthy son of an established Virginia family, while Van Buren grew up poor. But none of that mattered.
“It’s a perfect example of having campaign slogans and images attached to candidates that, in this case, didn’t really match at all,” says Claire Jerry, a curator of political history at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The museum has amassed a large collection of political memorabilia , including a model log cabin from 1840 that was carried around on a pole during pro-Harrison parades.
The most-memorable campaign slogan from 1840 was “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too!” a reference to Harrison as the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe and his running mate John Tyler. The slogan was turned into a popular campaign song that poked fun at the diminutive Van Buren as “little Van, the used-up man.”
“Music has always been a popular part of campaigns and politics generally,” says Jerry. “At a time when politics really was entertainment—it was one of our earliest spectator and participatory sports—you’d get together with your friends and have these big meetings. And since you didn’t really have media like we do today, people sang together more across the board for various kinds of events.”
In the 19th century, one of the most visible places to plaster a campaign ad was on a cigar box. The rituals of smoking and tobacco use were a big part of daily life in 19th-century America, which is reflected in the campaign memorabilia of the time.
Bejamin Harrison’s campaign issued a log cabin-shaped snuff box , Henry Clay’s issued a pipe featuring his head and William Howard Taft’s campaign featured a massive, nine-inch cigar emblazoned with his face. Taft was a fan of campaign-themed cigars, handing them out as early as the 1890s when he was a Federal judge in Ohio.
When Americans traded in cigars for cigarettes in the 20th century, tobacco companies issued special election-year packs for each candidate. Tobacco stores used to sell the competing packs side by side and track sales as a kind of informal “straw poll.”
“When Eisenhower ran against Stevenson in the 1950s, stores put out displays with the two types of cigarettes and said, ‘Based on sales, we project that Ike’s going to win,’” says Jerry.
Despite the well-documented health effects of smoking, campaign-themed cigarettes were still sold and distributed nationally as recently as the 1988 contest between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis.
Campaign buttons are still one of the most popular and mass-produced forms of campaign novelties. But have you ever wondered why they’re called “buttons” and not “pins.”
The answer goes all the way back to George Washington. Supporters of America’s first president showed their loyalty by sewing commemorative brass buttons into their jackets and overcoats.
“The original campaign buttons were actual buttons made out of metal,” says Jerry. “That was the style for a while. We kept using the word ‘button’ even after the development of the pin-back versions.”
The first modern campaign buttons came out in 1896 and were made from a new material called celluloid, the first chemically produced plastic. Improvements in technology have always driven political campaigns, and the 1896 election saw an explosion of more than 2,000 varieties of campaign knick-knacks, including a nifty interactive campaign button that let voters choose the winner.
In 1996, the Kraft corporation produced special boxes of its popular “mac & cheese” to hand out at that year’s Republican and Democratic national conventions. The gimmick was that the small pieces of pasta were fashioned into donkeys or elephants instead of elbows.
But that was far from the first time that an American manufacturer sought to market their products to voters in both parties. As mentioned before, cigar and cigarette companies didn’t care about political affiliations as long as they sold more smokes. And even small-scale manufacturers got in on the act, like the 19th-century metalworkers who sold stylish belt buckles for both candidates in 1888.
Among the strangest product tie-ins were soap babies . These commemorative soaps were among a proliferation of tchotchkes that came out during the 1896 election. That year’s race was between Republican William McKinley and Democrat William Jennings Bryan , and the major campaign issue was whether to ditch the gold standard for Bryan’s alternative economic plan called “free silver.”
In 1896, soap companies like Jergens wanted to show off new manufacturing technology that allowed them to make soap in any shape imaginable, not just bars. Bizarrely, someone decided that tiny soap babies was the way to go.
“They came in these boxes with little tags on them, saying, ‘My dad’s for free silver!’ or ‘My dad’s for the gold standard!’” says Jerry. “Nothing says economic policy like a four-inch naked baby made out of soap.”
Political bumper stickers are a mainstay of modern presidential campaigns, but versions of political bumper stickers have been around almost as long as there have been bumpers. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, early automobile owners would advertise their political loyalties by attaching metal signs to their license plates and bumpers.
The very first license plate attachments appeared in 1924, like this 12-inch attachment for third-party candidate Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follete. Supporters of FDR were so committed to their candidate that they drilled holes in their bumpers to permanently attach a metal sign screaming “ROOSEVELT.”
The first modern bumper stickers were sold after WWII thanks to wartime improvements in plastics, adhesives and highly visible dayglow colors. Although anyone who’s stuck a political bumper sticker on a vehicle knows they’re almost as hard to remove as a bolted-on metal plate.
Children can’t vote, but that hasn’t stopped political campaigns from appealing to the “child” in every voter with candidate-themed toys and games.
Grover Cleveland’s 1888 re-election campaign released a specialized deck of cards . Cleveland was the first president to get married in office, and his young and beautiful wife Frances was a 19th-century celebrity. The Cleveland campaign capitalized on America’s fascination with the first lady by printing a deck of playing cards with Frances as the four queens, Cleveland as the kings and an assortment of cabinet secretaries as the aces and jacks.
For the 1896 election, an enterprising toy company released the “ Presidential Muddle ,” a sliding peg game in which the winner was selected by the results of the electoral college. Advertised in The American Stationer , the manufacturers may have oversold the muddle’s entertainment value:
"All the world and his wife are interested in The Presidential Muddle. We know of nothing that life has to offer which is so entertaining, so satisfying as this puzzle. It is a happiness which postpones all other amusements, and makes theatres, concert halls and ballrooms cheap enjoyment.”
For the 1960 election, Richard Nixon’s campaign distributed its own version of a popular children’s toy called a clicker or “cricket.” The small, handheld toys made a sharp clicking sound that was equal parts exciting and annoying. The Nixon campaign even came up with a catchy slogan and song to go with the toy, called “ Click with Dick .”
Today, political candidates and their donor networks spend billions of dollars on TV and online advertising. But back in the early days of TV, not every candidate understood the power of this medium to get out the vote.
The 1952 contest between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson was the first election to feature TV ads. Fewer than 200,000 American households owned a TV during the 1948 election, but by 1952 there were tens of millions of TV sets nationwide.
Stevenson was wary of the new medium. He was particularly concerned about the ways that political messaging could devolve into outright “propaganda.” Instead of airing 60-second ads, Stevenson’s campaign took a more substantive approach, broadcasting 30-minute “information sessions” where the candidate soberly explained his policy positions to voters. Because the Stevenson campaign didn’t want to pay a lot for these spots, they aired late at night when viewership was low.
Eisenhower also took some convincing. At first, the conservative-minded general pushed back against campaign strategists who wanted to team with Madison Avenue admen and Hollywood producers. But Ike eventually embraced his role as America’s first “TV president.” He rode the wave of the wildly successful “I Like Ike” campaign to a cascade of TV ads and live appearances.
By enlisting Hollywood pros, the Eisenhower campaign produced gems like an animated TV ad made with the help of Disney artists (above), while Steveson’s campaign settled for a patriotic song that would have felt at home in a 19th-century campaign “songster.”
Eisenhower won in a landslide and future presidential candidates learned not to underestimate the power of TV.

Mr. Walz is an Army National Guard veteran, former high school geography teacher, and state-winning football coach. He served six terms in Congress before becoming governor.

Rybak. “The country is going to have to get used to seeing a vice president in a schlumpy T-shirt and cargo pants. ... And they’re going to have to get used to seeing a vice president who can fix a car or go hunting.”
Mr. Walz began the rapid veepstakes race as a little-known governor, but quickly gained support from progressives, many of whom wanted to find another Rust Belt candidate to block the more centrist Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro from the ticket.

Mr. Walz grew up on a farm in small-town Nebraska and moved to Mankato, in southern Minnesota, to teach high school geography and coach football in the 1990s. His teams won two state championships. He was elected to Congress in 2006, winning a red-leaning rural district. He is an Army National Guard veteran who served more than two decades; when he won his House seat he had the rank of command sergeant major, making him the highest-ranking enlisted soldier to ever serve in Congress.
He brings to the table the folksy, plainspoken vibe of a Midwestern former schoolteacher, which could help win over voters skeptical of a San Francisco progressive like Ms. Harris.
Former Minneapolis Democratic Mayor R.T. Rybak has known Mr. Walz since his first run for Congress – and says he’s the same “incredibly authentic human being” that he was in 2005.
“Vision, joy, and compassion are very much part of what Tim Walz is, and he also translates that through the eyes of the working people of this country,” Mr. Rybak says. “The country is going to have to get used to seeing a vice president in a schlumpy T-shirt and cargo pants. ... And they’re going to have to get used to seeing a vice president who can fix a car or go hunting.”
That demeanor and his governing record made Mr. Walz a favorite of progressives and populists in the truncated search for a Harris running mate. His description of former President Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, as “weird” in recent interviews quickly caught on with Ms. Harris and other Democrats.
She cited his biography and personality for why she selected the governor.
“One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep. It’s personal. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his own,” she said in a statement announcing the pick.
Mr. Walz was a relatively centrist congressman during his time in the House. He supported the Keystone XL oil pipeline, worked across the aisle to pass a bipartisan veterans suicide-prevention bill into law in 2015, and was a darling of the National Rifle Association in his early career. He’s a gun owner and avid hunter. But he has shifted to support more restrictions, like an assault weapons ban.
He’s won a number of tough House races in a rural district that leans Republican and two hard-fought gubernatorial elections in Minnesota, a liberal-leaning but competitive state.
He worked across the aisle with Republicans who controlled the Legislature in his first term to secure more funding to fight opioid addiction and cut middle-class taxes. And in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 by a police officer in Minneapolis, he helped negotiate a bipartisan law putting new restrictions on police use of force in the state.
It was striking that Mr. Walz’s selection drew praise from across the Democratic Party – both progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and centrist West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin cheered him. Mr. Manchin called Mr. Walz “the real deal,” and said he “will bring normality back to the most chaotic political environment that most of us have ever seen.”
The protests and riots that broke out in Minneapolis after Mr. Floyd’s death are a vulnerability for him, however: Mr. Walz later admitted that the state’s initial response was an “abject failure.” Mr. Walz also faces criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. A local nonprofit siphoned off a quarter-billion dollars in federal funds meant to feed children during the pandemic, the largest pandemic fraud case in the United States; a jury found five people guilty in June of fraud, bribery, and money laundering, and dozens of others face charges.
A recent legislative audit found that his administration’s Department of Education failed to conduct proper oversight to prevent the fraud.
Republicans are already attacking Mr. Walz on these issues.
“Tim Walz let BLM rioters burn buildings to the ground. At the same time, he set up ‘snitch phone lines’ to report Minnesotans to the police for going to the store or having a barbecue during COVID. Just like Kamala Harris, he’s dangerous radical,” Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas posted on X on Tuesday.
He began the rapid veepstakes race as a little-known governor, but quickly gained support from progressives, many of whom wanted to find another Rust Belt candidate to block the more centrist Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro from the ticket. Mr. Walz has earned plaudits from the left for his successful push in recent years for legislation to protect abortion access in Minnesota, create paid family leave, provide free school meals to all Minnesota students, offer free college tuition for all students from families that earn less than $80,000 annually, legalize recreational marijuana, and force public utility companies to use green energy. And he has close ties with organized labor.
Mr. Trump’s campaign immediately sought to paint him as a far-left politician.
“From proposing his own carbon-free agenda, to suggesting stricter emission standards for gas-powered cars, and embracing policies to allow convicted felons to vote, Walz is obsessed with spreading California’s dangerously liberal agenda far and wide,” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
Some pundits criticized Ms. Harris for not picking Mr. Shapiro, both because of the missed opportunity to shore up her support in Pennsylvania, perhaps the most important swing state in the country, and because Mr. Shapiro, a first-term governor, has a more moderate record that could win over independents.
But while Mr. Walz and Mr. Shapiro share similar views on Israel, Mr. Shapiro has been more outspoken in criticizing some protests against Israel’s war in Gaza, making him more of a target for criticism from the left.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a progressive who has known Mr. Walz since they were both elected to Congress in 2006, praised his home-state colleague for being able to build bridges with various disaffected groups.
“He’s a listener; he believes in sitting down with people and talking to them. Let me tell you, there’s a lot of communities who have felt historically marginalized in Minnesota who Tim Walz has built bridges with,” he says. “His basic impulse is to sit and listen and try to understand. He’s great at that.”
And Mr. Shapiro, an attorney from the Philadelphia suburbs, didn’t offer the blue-collar appeal that Mr. Walz brings – and Ms. Harris lacks.
“I always think of him [as] giving off the football coach vibes,” says Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chair Ken Martin, who has known Mr. Walz for two decades.
Mr. Martin says that Mr. Walz’s bio and skill set will make him an asset in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania – three “blue wall” states crucial to winning the presidential election.
“There’s no one better equipped to speak to those Midwestern values, with Midwestern sensibilities and sort of a folksiness than Tim Walz, who is one of the best communicators I’ve seen,” he says.

MINNEAPOLIS — Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her presidential running mate. While Walz might not be a household name, his political star has been on the rise in recent weeks after making several viral cable news appearances.
Walz was also credited with helping launch the "weird" movement among his fellow Democrats, which has gained traction and put former President Donald Trump, his vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance and other Republicans on the defensive.
He has also been applauded and condemned for several progressive laws passed while in Minnesota's highest office, especially in his second term when the DFL Party took total control of state government following the 2022 elections.
He also faced severe criticism in his first term for how he handled the dual crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and the violent uprising that followed the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020.
In an interview with CNN last month , host Jake Tapper pressed Walz about whether he could harm the Democratic ticket, as the Trump campaign works hard to portray Harris as an ultraliberal. Walz said he was "more than happy" to take any label they have.
"What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn, and women are making their own health care decisions. And we're a top-five business state and we also rank in the top three of happiness," Walz said.
Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, believes Walz is an asset to Harris' campaign because of his "attack dog" skills.
"I think we'd see Tim Walz really going after the Trump-Vance ticket, and it'd probably be a harsher tone than what we've seen here in Minnesota in his everyday conduct. And he'd really be counted on to win the key states in the Upper Midwest," Jacobs said.
Here are several of Walz's accomplishments — with an unusual number of legislative successes scored in March 2023 alone — and setbacks during his tenure as governor.
Walz's use of emergency powers during the pandemic — including the institution of a mask mandate, business shutdowns and a hotline number established to report people violating social distancing guidelines — outraged his critics.
Several lawsuits followed, including one filed in 2020 by the conservative Upper Midwest Law Center alleging Walz misinterpreted the Minnesota Emergency Management Act and illegally bypassed state lawmakers when issuing a peacetime emergency.
The case, which focused on the mask mandate, eventually made its way to the Minnesota Supreme Court , which sent it back to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In July 2023, that court ruled that Walz indeed had the authority.
During his 2022 reelection campaign against GOP candidate Dr. Scott Jensen, who was banned from some social media platforms for spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, Walz consistently defended the "hard decisions" he made during the pandemic. He went on to defeat Jensen by nearly 200,000 votes.
Conservatives lashed out at Walz for his delay in the historic activation of the Minnesota National Guard , which helped restore order on Twin Cities streets during the unrest in May 2020.
The delay drew the ire of then-President Trump , who went on to falsely claim he ultimately made the call. Months after the chaos, Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he asked Walz for troops three days before he gave the green light.
Walz, who served in the Army National Guard for nearly a quarter of a century, clapped back at Frey .
"I don't think the mayor knew what he was asking for," Walz said. "I think the mayor said, 'I request the National Guard, this is great. We're going to have massively-trained troops.' No, you're going to have 19-year-olds who are cooks!"
In a recent interview with Fox News , Minnesota Republican Party Chair David Hann accused Walz of delaying guard activation because "he was fearful of alienating his progressive base, who were supporting the riots."
"[Walz has] been a disaster for Minnesota and is by far the most partisan governor that I can remember having," Hann said. "He displayed a remarkable lack of leadership in dealing with the riot that was very destructive, and the aftermath of which is still affecting the quality of life and the business climate in Minneapolis."
In a 1995 ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld abortion rights in Minnesota. In January 2023, Walz signed the PRO Act (Protect Reproductive Options Act) into law, making abortion a "fundamental right," as well as access to contraception, fertility treatments, sterilization and other reproductive health care.
The law made Minnesota the first state to codify abortion rights in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which nullified Roe v. Wade after nearly 50 years of precedent.
"Your access to reproductive health and your right to make your own health care decisions are preserved and protected," Walz said during the signing ceremony. "And because of this law, that won't change with the political wins or makeup of the Supreme Court. This is a bill for Minnesota today and all future generations."
Republicans vigorously opposed the PRO Act, which was labeled as an "extreme law" by the party's top lawmakers, who failed to add amendments that would've banned third-trimester abortions and required clinics to be licensed.
In April 2023, Walz signed the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act into law, shielding women and providers from any legal action originating from the patient's state.
Walz has a long history of supporting LGBTQIA+ rights. While teaching at Mankato West High School in the 90s, he helped found its first gay-straight alliance group.
"You have an older, White, straight, married, male football coach who's deeply concerned that these students are treated fairly and that there is no bullying," Walz said in a 2018 campaign ad .
In March 2023, Walz signed an executive order to protect the right of residents to have access to gender-affirming health care . Weeks later, he signed the "Trans Refuge" bill, banning the enforcement of arrest warrants, extradition requests and out-of-state subpoenas for those who traveled to Minnesota for care.
"When someone else is given basic rights, others don't lose theirs," Walz said. "We aren't cutting a pie here. We're giving basic rights to every single Minnesotan."
Republicans sought to place an amendment in a separate bill to outlaw access in line with some neighboring states.
Other critics, including Christian conservative groups, claimed the law places vulnerable youths in danger of irreparable harm.
Proponents say gender-affirming care treatments are evidence-based with plans developed on a person-by-person basis, taking into consideration the patient's developmental stage.
The practice of putting LGBTQIA+ youths into " conversion therapy ," which aims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, was also formally banned in early 2023, although Walz issued an executive order two years earlier to restrict the practice.
Opponents of conversion therapy, like Children's Minnesota pediatrician Dr. Angela Kade Goepferd, say the practice can cause psychological trauma, and increase the risk of self-harm and suicide.
Opponents of the ban said it was ultimately an attack on religious freedom .
Walz, an avid hunter, signed a public safety package later that year including a "red flag" law that allows family members, roommates or law enforcement to petition the courts to remove firearms from the possession of anyone deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Another law within the package required private gun transfers to be subject to background checks.
"This is not about the Second Amendment," Walz said. "This is about the safety and security of our communities."
Republicans and gun rights advocates accused Walz and DFL lawmakers of burying the gun control measures into the enormous package, and unfairly impacting the rights of lawful gun owners.
In May 2023, Walz signed a law creating a state-run program to provide paid family and medical leave for Minnesota workers, funded by a 0.7% payroll tax on employers, by 2026.
While proponents say the law is an "equalizer" that provides a road map for a similar federal effort, critics claim it would cost much more than estimated and devastate small businesses.
In May 2023, Minnesota became the 23rd state in the nation to legalize recreational cannabis use . Three months later, people 21 and older could start to possess certain amounts of marijuana at home and on their person, in addition to legally growing up to eight plants at a time.
Minnesotans with minor marijuana convictions are also eligible to have their criminal records expunged, and residents from communities of color — which were disproportionately targeted for arrests and convictions for possession for decades — are given preferential status in applying for cannabis-related business licenses .
Republican lawmakers accused the Democratic majority at the Capitol of forcing through legislation that was full of loopholes that ultimately endanger youths and increase public safety risks, especially the prospect of more impaired drivers on state roads.
Walz also signed a bill into law in March 2023 that allows Minnesota residents of any immigration status the ability to obtain a driver's license .
Advocates for the bill, which had strong backing from law enforcement, business and religious groups, said it would lead to safer roads and a stronger economy.
Opponents accused lawmakers and Walz of potentially opening a Pandora's box that could blur eligibility for voting and enrollment in other state programs.
Republican lawmakers also unsuccessfully sought to make special licenses for undocumented Minnesotans that would be easily distinguishable from the standard cards.
In that same watershed month, Walz signed a bill that restored the right to vote to more than 50,000 convicted felons who had already served their time .
"We are in a country of second chances, we're a country of welcoming people back in. And the idea of not allowing those voices to have a say in the very governing of the communities they live in is simply unacceptable," Walz said.
Several Republicans lambasted the legislation, saying those still serving probation for felonies should not have the right to vote. Sen. Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, went further, saying the law "opens our elections to being influenced by convicted felons and illegal immigrants."
Amid the increase in food insecurity for many Minnesotans during the pandemic, and the subsequent strain on the state's food shelves that remains to this day , Walz signed a bill in March 2023 that ensures all K-12 students in the state have access to free breakfast and lunch on school days.
"As a former teacher, I know that providing free breakfast and lunch for our students is one of the best investments we can make to lower costs, support Minnesota's working families, and care for our young learners and the future of our state," Walz said.
Initially pegged to cost $388 million in the state's two-year budget, the cost ballooned by more than $80 million , stoking sentiment among Republican lawmakers that the program is a waste of taxpayer funds, and largely provides meals for students of families that can easily afford to pay for them.
In April 2023, Walz became the first Minnesota governor in three decades to reroute a criminal case from a county attorney to the state attorney general's office .
The case involved the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Zaria McKeever . The father of her young child was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year for orchestrating her death. Two teenage brothers, one of whom fired the fatal shots inside her Brooklyn Park apartment, were also sent to prison.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty originally put together a plea deal for the brothers that would've seen them serve time in juvenile detention instead of being sent to adult facilities. The move angered McKeever's family and community members, and their outcry led Walz to intervene and place the case in the hands of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
Earlier this year, Moriarty faced fierce criticism for charging a White Minnesota state trooper in the death of a Black motorist in 2023 . Her office eventually dropped the charges , and Walz told reporters soon after he had planned to intervene again if Moriarty hadn't made "the right decision."
Moriarty called Walz's move in the McKeever case "deeply troubling" and alarming to "prosecutors across the state." That sentiment was shared by the National Lawyers Guild , which called Walz's conduct "not just wrong, but in the context of other decisions, shows that you are making these sensitive decisions based on political expedience."
Following the end of the state trooper case in June 2024, Moriarty accused Walz of unfair treatment due to her gender and sexuality, as she is the first openly LGBTQIA+ Hennepin County attorney, pointing to the lack of criticism her predecessor Mike Freeman enjoyed.
When pressed by the media about Moriarty's claims, Walz simply said they were "false."
