In other words, bicycles do not require any petrol or diesel which harms our atmosphere. Further, it does not leave a carbon footprint as well. Thus, it is a great choice for everyone especially those who are environment-friendly.

After that, we see that bicycles do not possess the potential to harm anyone, unlike bikes, cars and buses. If you ride a bicycle, you are less likely to hurt someone or get in an accident as compared to ones who ride bikes or drive cars.

Most importantly, bicycles are great for our health. There are numerous benefits which cycling offers to ensure a healthy life. It is not only a great alternative to gym workouts but also helps prevent cardiovascular diseases .

Therefore, bicycles help to preserve our health. Similarly, they do not harm the environment. Moreover, they are also very beneficial as we can go through narrow roads with a bicycle which we cannot do with bikes or cars.

I have a bicycle which is red and black in colour. My father gifted it to me on my birthday and it is my most cherished present. The name of my bicycle is Turbo Thunder and it has many interesting features.

It comes with different gears and a basket as well. Moreover, it also has a bottle holder and a lock. I cycle every evening with my friends from the neighbourhood. It is very liberating to me to be able to cycle in the pleasant weather without any care.

My father ensures that I always wear my protective gear while cycling to prevent any injuries. I have decorated my cycle with stickers as well to make it more personalized. In addition, I go to my coaching classes on my bicycle only.

Therefore, I love my bicycle and I wish to keep it with me even after growing up. As cycling is good for the environment and our health, I plan to keep cycling for a long time to lead a healthy life and make the environment clean.

We all have fond memories of our first bicycle when we learned how to ride a bike. Some of us are naturally born riders, while others took some time to learn how to ride a bicycle. Bicycle holds a special place in my memories. It was a warm evening on my first day of summer vacation, and my birthday was at the end of the week. When I woke from my afternoon sleep, I heard the noise of a bell. I looked out of my window and saw the most beautiful bicycle I had ever seen. My parents had planned to surprise me with that bicycle. It was my favourite gift from that birthday because I had always wanted a bicycle like that. 

I was so interested in bicycles that I did a lot of research on them. The first bicycle was invented by a German which did not have brakes or chains. However, modern bicycles have many advanced features.

Features of My First Bicycle

My bicycle was a sleek sports bike. Its colour is yellow and built of strong metal. It has two rubber tyres and two brakes to control its speed. It was made of smooth glossy steel and had a headlight at the front. The seat was black and could be adjusted to my height and comfort. The bicycle was light and comfortable, making it easy to ride.

Memories of My First Bicycle

My first bicycle played an important role in my childhood. There were so many nice memories attached to the bicycle that I can’t possibly list them all. But I’ll mention a few of them. 

The first and earliest memory I have is of riding it for the first time. I was both terrified and excited at the time. I was trying to balance the cycle while my father was holding me from behind. The entire bicycle was shaking.

After a few attempts, I was able to ride the bicycle straight ahead, so my father let go of me. I was very happy riding my bicycle around the empty lanes. Suddenly, there was a small stone under the tyre that I didn’t notice due to my happiness, and I lost my balance. I fell to the ground and bruised my knees. That day, I realised how important it was to be careful when riding my bike.

There was another incident when I nearly lost my bicycle. I parked it and went to play with one of my friends. When I returned, the bicycle was not there. I was terrified and began crying but then I came to know that my father had parked the bicycle in the back as I left it unlocked.

(more emphatic than ‘should’: Since I am older than you, it is advisable that you listen to me.) Note: ‘Should’ and ‘ought to’ are often used interchangeably.

Rewrite each of the following sentences using should/ought to/must in place of the italicised words. Make other changes wherever necessary.

Introduction

An acquaintance of the narrator suggests they go on a bicycle ride. Looking forward to an enjoyable day, the narrator wakes up earlier than his usual time and sets out with his beloved bicycle. His friend arrives half an hour after the scheduled time. Much to the narrator’s irritation, he begins to shake narrator’s bicycle roughly. 

As the boastful but incompetent friend of the narrator dismantles the machine, the balls roll away on the ground. The poor narrator attempts to gather the balls and puts them in his hat. The two have a hard time finding the screws which roll away too. After much struggle, the two men manage to assemble all the parts only to realise that they have forgotten the balls in the narrator’s hat. 

As the narrator comically remarks, both the man and the bicycle suffer in this process. Tired and even bleeding, the man proudly concludes that the bicycle is now perfectly repaired. It seems that the bicycle suffered as much as the man who took upon himself the task of repairing it. The boastful man then cleans himself and leaves, leaving the narrator with his bicycle.

Answer:  The author’s friend has taken out the ball bearings from the front wheel without any alarm. He then started fixing the front wheel only to realise latter that he had not put those bearings back into their place. He then moved to the chain. He first tightened it to an extent that it wasn’t moving and loosened twice its earlier state. The gear-case was the most complicated one. He took it easily, but a tough time fixing it back.

3. Narrator the author’s reaction when his bicycle was destroyed.

Answer:  The author’s friend pretended to be an expert on bicycles. He took the bicycle by the front wheel. He shook it violently. The author forbade him to do so. Then the friend proceeded with the improvement of the bicycle. The author asked his friend to stop it. It had no effect on his friend. The friend declared that the bearings were all wrong. The author asked him not to trouble about it anymore. The friend did not pay any heed to his request. The author felt like kicking this friend out of the house. There are many things around us that we consider dear to us. Similarly people are also emotional about their things and we must respect their feelings.

Treating other’s thing’s callously will make them lose their trust on us and they might not lend their things to us again. We should take uttermost care while handling things belonging to others and must return them at once when our job is done.

2: Friendship is a great relation. We all must treasure our friends. Explain.

Chapter 6: Mystery of the talking fan

This poem personifies the ceiling fan. The poet calls its noise chatter. He is unable to comprehend what the fan is trying to convey. But before he could find it, somebody oil the fan and it stopped making noise. So the fan starts functioning smoothly without making any noise. The poet says that the fan felt silent.

Chapter 7: Dad and the Cat and the Tree

It is a humorous poem. When dad finds out that a cat is stuck on a tree, he tries to get it down. Mom warns him to be cautious while climbing the tree, he boasts that it is a cakewalk to climb the tree for a climber like him. But he falls down while climbing. He decides to use other ways to get to the cat. This poem talks about those.

Answer: No, the front wheel did not wobble much. We can say so because the author says “It didn’t wobble, as a matter of fact—nothing worth calling a wobble.”

Question 2. In what condition did the author find the bicycle when he returned from the tool shed?

Answer: When the author returned from the tool shed, he saw that his friend was sitting on the ground with the front wheel of the bicycle between his legs. He was playing with it, twiddling it round between his fingers, and the rest was lying on the gravel path beside him.

Question 3. “Nothing is easier than taking off the gear-case.” Comment on or continue this sentence in light of what actually happens.

Answer: The author’s friend says, “Nothing is easier than taking off the gear-case.”

The author warns him that he had heard from one of his experienced friends that, “If anything goes wrong with your gear-case, sell the machine and buy a new one; it comes cheaper.”

The author’s friend doesn’t take it seriously and continues to take off the gear-case. Later, he struggles and is unable to put back the gear-case in its proper place.

Question 4. What special treatment did the chain receive?

Answer: The author’s friend tightened the chain so much that it stopped moving completely. Then he began to loosen it. He loosened it until it became twice as loose as it was before.

Question 5. The friend has two qualities — he knows what he is doing and is absolutely sure it is good. Find the two phrases in the text which mean the same.

The fight between the man and the machine can be understood by the following paragraph in the text:

One moment the bicycle would be on the gravel path, and he on top of it; the next, the position would be reversed—he on the gravel path, the bicycle on him. Now he would be standing flushed with victory, the bicycle firmly fixed between his legs. But his triumph would be short-lived. By a sudden, quick movement, it would free itself and, turning upon him, hit him sharply over the head with one of its handles.

The words in italics are modal auxiliaries. Modal auxiliaries  are used with verbs to express notions such as possibility, permission, willingness, obligation, necessity, etc. ‘Should,’ ‘must’ and ‘ought to’ generally express moral obligation, necessity and desirability.

Look at the following.

• We should go on a holiday. (Suggestion: It is a good idea for us to go on a holiday.)

• He is not too well these days. He must see a doctor before he becomes worse. (Compulsion or necessity: It is absolutely essential or necessary for him to see a doctor.)

• You ought to listen to me. I am well over a decade older than you. (more emphatic than ‘should’: Since I am older than you, it is advisable that you listen to me.)

Note: ‘Should’ and ‘ought to’ are often used interchangeably.

Rewrite each of the following sentences using should/ ought to/must in place of the italicized words. Make other changes wherever necessary.

(i) You are obliged to do your duty irrespective of consequences.

(ii) You will do well to study at least for an hour every day.

(iii) The doctor says it is necessary for her to sleep eight hours every night.

Answer: The author and his friend had planned to go for a ride on the bicycle, but the two couldn’t make it. His friend dismantled all the parts of the bicycle one-by-one. He first took out the front wheel and then the ball bearing from it. The chain was his next victim before he finally moved on to the gear-case. It took his friend the entire day to fix these parts back into their place and then he finally left for his home.

Answer: The author’s friend has taken out the ball bearings from the front wheel without any alarm. He then started fixing the front wheel only to realize latter that he had not put those bearings back into their place. He then moved to the chain.

He first tightened it to an extent that it wasn’t moving and loosened twice its earlier state. The gear-case was the most complicated one. He took it easily, but a tough time fixing it back.

Answer: We should treat things that belongs to others with utmost care. We should treat them even more cautiously than we would have treated our things.

There are many things around us that we consider dear to us. Similarly people are also emotional about their things and we must respect their feelings.

Treating other’s thing’s callously will make them lose their trust on us and they might not lend their things to us again. We should take uttermost care while handling things belonging to others and must return them at once when our job is done.

Question : Friendship is a great relation. We all must treasure our friends. Explain.

Answer: It is great to have friends in life. They add colours to our life. There are many things which we cannot share with our family, but can share with our friends easily.

Our friends help us in our time of need and stand beside us during our thick and thin. We trust them and can rely on them in times of need. We must be helpful and understanding towards our friend and must always be available to render our help to them.

“Catch ’em!” he shouted; “catch ’em! We mustn’t lose any of them.” He was quite excited about them. We groveled round for half an hour and found sixteen. He said he hoped we had got them all, because, if not, it would make a serious difference to the machine. I had put them in safety in my hat. It was not a sensible thing to do I admit.
