Each writer will focus on her/his/their individual work as well as read others’ work and provide feedback. Writers will greatly benefit from the supportive structure that a writers’ workshop creates.

Apply for the JIAS 2022 Writing Workshop
The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), is currently accepting applications for its debut writing workshop.
The writing workshop by JIAS would feature amongst other things: mentorship from established and accomplished writers; an intensive creative experience; accommodation at JIAS’ private residence; and daily meals.
The JIAS workshop is scheduled to run from the 2nd of June 2022, to the 9th of June of the same year. It promises four weeks of intensive writing for emerging writers who have literary projects they would like to complete or polish. Although all selected writers would focus on their personal development and projects, there would be room for interaction and peer review.
The JIAS Writers’ Workshop is open to African writers who work in fiction (long and short form), creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and poetry. On the miscellaneous side, the writers would benefit from Joburg’s vitality and diversity, while being mentored by writers who are at the top of their game—masters in every sense of the craft.

The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) invites applications for its Eight Writing Semester, which will run from 1 February to 31 May 2023. Fellowships are open to any field of expertise, including novelists writing in indigenous languages. Previous fellows have included academics, novelists, scientists, poets, playwrights, independent researchers and journalists.
From the beginning of February to the end of May every year, the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study hosts a group of exceptional creative writers and scholars from different disciplines as Writing Fellows. Each Writing Fellow focuses on her/his individual project while benefiting from interacting with other Writing Fellows and from the community of scholars and writers from the universities in Johannesburg and Gauteng in general.
Requirements:
- The JIAS Writers’ Workshop is open to African writers who work in Fiction (long and short form), Creative Non-Fiction, Playwriting, Screenwriting and Poetry.

The Heartland Review Press invites high school and college students to register for a creative writing workshop with local poet Jan LaPerle. The workshop is 6 to 8 p.m. April 30 at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, James S. Owen Building, room 131.
Jan LaPerle’s publications include “Maybe the Land Sings Back” (Galileo Press, 2022), “It Would be Quiet” (Prime Mincer Press, 2013), an e-chap of flash fiction, “Hush” (Sundress Publications, 2012), and a story in verse, “A Pretty Place to Mourn” (BlazeVOX, 2014). She lives in Elizabethtown with her husband Clay and daughter Winnie. LaPerle will retire from the U.S. Army this year.
The workshop has 25 seats. Students will create an original work that will be considered for publication in ECTC’s literary journal The Heartland Review. The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), has opened applications to emerging African creative writers to participate in its Second Annual Writers' Workshop. This is a three-months workshop opened for promising and early-stage creative writers in Africa for an intensive writing programme. This is for writers looking to complete or polish their current works in progress.
The writing workshop by JIAS would feature amongst other things: mentorship from established and accomplished writers; an intensive creative experience; accommodation at JIAS' private residence; and daily meals. The JIAS workshop is scheduled to run from the 2nd of June 2022, to the 9th of June of the same year.
