Violence & Scariness

Fast action and perilous moments dotted throughout. Characters are chased by baddies. Spooky scenes in dark woods. A near-drowning. Cartoon fighting includes characters being hit with metal hammers and chased with swords -- it's slapstick with no graphic or serious injury. Canons are fired on the heroes. The wicked queen is cartoonishly ghoulish and sinister -- at her scariest when placing curses. A character appears to have sacrificed themselves and is seen "dying" in another's arms -- but they survive.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Flirting and some kissing. A group of characters require a kiss to break a curse. Several references to characters being physically attractive in the context of sexual appeal -- but these are presented with cartoonish innocence and no inappropriate language or indecent behavior.

Positive Messages

Promotes body image and self-acceptance, while confronting stereotypes. The central theme is that a person's beauty comes from within and that appearances are not important. The value of friendship and teamwork. Characters discuss dealing with how others perceive you.

Positive Role Models

Red Shoes is kind, charming, and brave. But her biggest quality is that she isn't seduced by her new "beautiful" princess-like appearance. She prefers being "chubby" but strong, and her strength enables her to protect and save others. Merlin seems narcissistic and shallow, but eventually falls for Red Shoes in her original form -- reinforcing the central theme that beauty comes from within.

Educational Value

Although a parody, younger viewers may be inspired to learn more about Grimms' Fairy Tales .

Parents need to know that Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (also known as Snow White & the Red Shoes ) is a fun-packed animated comedy that breaks the stereotype of traditional fairy tale characters. A parody of the original Brothers Grimm story, this take on Snow White has a strong body-positive theme that emphasizes the beauty of characters of all shapes and sizes. There are some sinister characters and mild cartoon peril, including a scene in which ( spoiler alert ) a key character appears to die before coming back to life. But none of this is scary enough to bother most elementary-aged kids. There's also a fair bit of flirting and efforts to secure kisses. The movie caused some controversy when it was first screened in 2017: The marketing campaign at that time, which suggested that an overweight Snow White wasn't beautiful, was swiftly canceled and publicly denounced by actor Chloe Grace Moretz , who voices Snow White. And it seems clear that the movie's true intentions are to show that people should celebrate who they are, inside and out, and that true love sees beyond appearances. Great message

Feel-good movie, what's the story.

Loosely based on Snow White, RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS tells the story of the "Fearless Seven" -- a group of vain but heroic princes -- who have been turned into green dwarfs by a spurned fairy. Their only hope to break the curse is a kiss from a beautiful princess. Cut to the plump and mousey Snow White (voiced by Chloe Grace Moretz ) whose father, King White ( Nolan North ) has disappeared at the hands of her wicked stepmother, Regina ( Gina Gershon ). After a pair of magic red shoes turn Snow into a "beautiful" princess she sets out to find her father, arriving at the house of the Seven, and swiftly renaming herself Red Shoes. Knowing that her kiss could break their curse, the dwarfs pledge to help her -- with Merlin ( Sam Claflin ) determined to win her heart. Using a combination of teamwork, ingenuity, and the dwarfs' magical powers, the heroes must defeat Regina to save the King and -- perhaps -- return to their original forms.

Is It Any Good?

This high-spirited, engaging family comedy is a tale of mistaken identities that challenges stereotypes and reassures us that it's ok to be different. There are some genuinely funny moments and wise-cracking remarks in Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs that will entertain tweens -- and parents -- as well as plenty of silliness for younger kids. The story is clever and fast-paced, with a strong cast of characters. Red Shoes is warm but feisty, Merlin is amusingly narcissistic, and the odious and pretentious Prince Average (pronounced "Ah-vu-rahj") is a classic cartoon villain. Meanwhile Patrick Warburton -- aka Lemony Snickett in the brilliant TV adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events -- is deliciously entertaining as the evil but hapless Magic Mirror.

At times you might question the clarity of the message -- does highlighting a character's physical appearance debunk or exacerbate the stereotype? But ultimately this is a smart take on Snow White that's full of heart and good humor. And by the end, it's crystal clear that beauty does indeed come from within.

Movie review.

A long, long time ago, in a magical place called Fairy Island, there lived a group of seven famous princes who fought evil to keep the world safe. There was the leader, Merlin; Arthur, Jack, and Hans; and triplets Pino, Noki and Kio. They were known to all as the Fearless Seven.

One day, they saved a woman from a dragon. But when they saw her green face, they believed her to be a witch. So, they attacked her multiple times, misunderstanding her identity. When she came to, the fairy cursed them, turning them all into little, green dwarfs. The only way to break the spell was to find the “most beautiful woman in the world” and kiss her.

Flash-forward to the present.

These seven dwarfs are hiding away, ashamed of their looks, until they meet a beautiful young woman who stumbles into their home. She calls herself Red Shoes, and all of the dwarves are smitten. She is the most beautiful woman in the entire world and their only hope of breaking their curse.

The only problem is that Red Shoes isn’t exactly who she says she is. In fact, her name isn’t Red Shoes at all. It’s princess Show White. And she’s on the run from her wicked step- mother, Regina, who is responsible for her father’s disappearance and the kingdom’s destruction.

See, Regina is furious because she depends on a special apple to give her unmatched beauty. And just as she was about to walk into her secret chamber to take a bite, Snow White beat her to it. Now, Regina is on the hunt for Snow White and her new identity as the fairest maiden in the land.

But Snow White doesn’t care about any of that. Outward beauty isn’t her goal. Instead, she wants to find her father and bring him back safely. But she’ll need the dwarfs help to do it. And, perhaps, as Snow White and the seven dwarfs search for King White, they will find out that the most important things in life are more than skin deep.

Positive Elements

Snow White, both while she is herself and when she transforms into Red Shoes, is a woman of great character. She doesn’t put much stock in the physical appearance of others, and she doesn’t judge their worth based on how they look, either. Instead, she truly sees the inner beauty and character of each person. She is caring, sweet, brave, gracious, truthful and sacrificial, often putting her life on the line for others.

As the story unfolds, one of the dwarfs is astounded when he learns that Snow White loves him for who he is, rather than for how he looks. She tells him that his personality and amiable qualities are most valued. That dwarf also sacrifices himself to save Snow White and comes to her aide often.

Snow White’s father, although he was deceived by Regina’s beauty, understands the error of his ways. He loves his daughter greatly and tells her that she is beautiful.

Viewers also learn about valuing people’s intentions over their gifts, as well as the importance of assessing someone’s character.

Spiritual Elements

As this is a story that takes place on the magical Fairy Tale Island, a good bit of magic is both wielded and witnessed.

Regina uses her evil magical powers to curse apples which, when eaten, turn people into wooden creatures that serve her. She also speaks often with her enchanted mirror, has the ability to take on various forms, and curses the seven dwarfs and Snow White.

Magic is used in many forms, not only by Regina but by the dwarfs as well. Arthur has magical strength and his sword, while Merlin uses magic cards to wield his powers. The other dwarfs all have special, magical abilities as well.

A coveted apple is able to transform into shoes, which have the power to morph a person’s appearance, making her beautiful; the apple is known for feeding off of a person’s true desires.

Arthur dramatically exclaims that he can see “the light at the end of the tunnel” when he suffers a minor injury. The dwarfs talk about witches and monsters a few times.

Sexual Content

Merlin, Arthur and the other dwarfs are infatuated with Red Shoes’ beauty. They each talk about her physical beauty, as well as kissing her; Merlin and Arthur even fantasize about it.

Snow White and a dwarf kiss a few times. A dwarf refers to himself as a “part-time romantic.” Still, another is told to find a better way to “hit on girls” as he takes Red Shoes to a special place where he has obviously rehearsed lines to win over his love interests.

Red Shoes slaps Arthur in the face when he puckers up for a kiss, making it clear that she does not appreciate his advances. The dwarfs believe that when they turn back into their regular forms, ladies will be “begging to kiss them.”

We hear about a female character who’s busy “waxing her legs.”

Violent Content

Multiple perilous scenes might be too scary for the littlest viewers as the dwarfs fight enemies with swords, magical spells, boulders and cannonballs. In one fight scene, a group of soldiers are crushed by a falling house frame. In another, a fire-breathing dragon destroys a small village.

Regina, the witch, gets angry and mistreats some small companions, whom she has turned into cute wooden creatures. Once, she knocks the head off of a little bear, but it’s soon replaced. Regina threatens to kill a friend of Snow White if she doesn’t give up her red shoes. Regina also employs her living, evil mirror, which is attached to a tree. The tree-mirror extends his branches and hurts multiple people.

A dwarf hits Red Shoes over the head with a pan, knocking her unconscious. Another dwarf exclaims that he’d like to “punch” Merlin. Multiple wooden creatures get zapped with magic. A few of those creatures, who are actually humans beneath their cursed exterior, ultimately die when they fall into a lake and drown.

Snow White defends herself and the dwarfs multiple times by punching a prince in the face and head-butting a group of threatening guards.

Crude or Profane Language

Snow White says “oh my gosh” a few times. Regina, the witch, is called a “hag,” a “horrible crone” and “ugly.” Other insults include, “loser,” “buffoon,” “big ugly face” and “stupid.”

A dwarf says he wants to kick an object “where the sun don’t shine.” Regina tells her mirror to “cut the sass.”

Drug and Alcohol Content

Other negative elements.

Regina can be quite scary when she gets angry.

We hear a joke about fecal matter being used in a special face mask. A dwarf comments on a friend needing “anger management.” A group of guards make fun of Snow White’s physical appearance.

A compilation of magical worlds, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs features many beloved characters that we’ve all grown to know and love. But with a little twist.

This animated kids’ original holds an important message for viewers of all ages: Outward beauty is no match for what’s inside. In other words, who you are is the most beautiful thing about you. And, because of that, developing the person you want to become deserves the most attention.

It’s a beautiful premise that isn’t usually a main focus in films. And while it is certainly a worthy message, there are still some magical mishaps parents will want to be aware of. Flirtation, a few kisses, some potty humor and a little rude language turn up, and some perilous scenes might make this too scary for small viewers.

But for those that do watch, they will learn that while the world may see outer beauty, true friends—the kind that are worth fighting for—are the ones who focus on the heart.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

Dove review.

This Snow White -meets- The Wizard of Oz -meets- Tangled tale is a delight—sprinkled with clean humor and loaded with valuable lessons for children and adults.

The Fearless Seven, Fairytale Island’s undeniable heroes, accidentally tried to kill a fairy princess, a rather greenish fairy that resembled an evil witch. As punishment, the princess turned The Fearless Seven into tiny green dwarfs, and though their powers remained, it was hard to save the world standing two feet tall. Embarrassed and unable to protect the people, The Fearless Seven staked out in the mountains, searching for a beautiful kiss from a princess to break their curse.

Unlike Disney’s iconic Snow White, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs ‘ Snow White is round and curvy. She takes after her father, the king, who married a deceptive, charming, beautiful witch, Regina. On a search to find eternal beauty, Regina destroys the king’s palace, and the king disappears. Snow White is determined to find her father, and once she discovers two red shoes that change her into a more slender, more socially-defined “attractive” woman, Regina does everything in her power to chase down Snow White and retrieve the red shoes.

Running for her life, Snow White bumps into seven short, ogre-like men who offer to help her find her father (in hopes for Snow White’s kiss to break the curse). Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs follows their adventure to find the king and restore The Fearless Seven, but this journey teaches them more lessons than how to slay evil woodland monsters and ward off the bad guys.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is like most other fairytale stories. There are witches and dragons and spells and magical powers, but each fantasy feature is mild in content and doesn’t create intense, scary scenes for younger children. There’s occasional “kick butt” and “hitting on a girl” references, an innocent kiss, and a dwarf who likes whacking bad guys in the head with an iron pan, but other than that, the script remains clean.

This film reminds us that looks can drive motivation all day long, but when the day is done, physical appearances can’t promise friendship, love, and sacrifice. Because of this theme, we award Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Dove-approval for All Ages.

The Dove Take:

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS Movie Review A spoof on a classic tale like you and your family have never seen before! Posted by Movieguide on Friday, September 18, 2020

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

What You Need To Know:

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS is a delightful animated fairytale. Seven human princes have been cursed and changed into little green dwarfs. They must find a princess to kiss and break the curse. Meanwhile, a wicked witch has taken over the kingdom and is desperate to be the land’s prettiest woman. She creates shoes that will create eternal beauty, but Snow White, plump and self-conscious, steals the red shoes. While fleeing from the witch, she runs into the seven dwarfs. Hiding her true identity, she tells the dwarfs her name is Red Shoes. They see their opportunity to get back their old appearances by earning the affection of Red Shoes.

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS is a funny, endearing adventure that parodies the classic tale of Snow White with its own unique twist. The movie has a strong moral worldview where love conquers evil and character is valued above appearance. The voice acting and well-told story about honesty makes for an entertaining, family-friendly movie. However, RED SHOES has some cartoonish violence, flirting and magic. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.

Miscellaneous Immorality: Love based solely on physical attraction; however, this is seen as harmful and character’s minds are changed.

More Detail:

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS is a fun, endearing animated adventure that parodies the classic tale of Snow White with its own unique twist on the fable.

The movie opens with seven powerful princes saving a kingdom from the attacks of a dragon. However, in their eagerness, they mistake a fairy for a witch, who curses them by turning them into tiny, green dwarfs. The only way to reverse the curse is to receive a kiss from a real princess.

Cut to a montage. Viewers meet Snow White. However, after Snow White’s mother dies, the King marries Regina. Regrettably, Regina is secretly a witch. She ends up taking control of the throne and cursing the King.

Snow White isn’t the stereotypical princess. She’s heavyset and round. She sneaks into the castle, where the witch is guarding a pair of red shoes to make her beautiful forever. Snow White doesn’t know what the shoes do, but she wears them and is chased from the witch’s castle, straight into the lives of the seven dwarfs.

Snow White realizes her whole appearance has changed now while wearing the shoes. She wants to keep her true identity a secret. She tells the dwarfs her name is Red Shoes, and immediately they begin to scheme about how they can get Red Shoes to lift their curse. They agree to help her find her father in the hope their true identities will be restored.

The wicked witch recruits the help of a young, egotistical prince named Prince Average. He forces Red Shoes to attend his birthday party. Merlin and the six other dwarfs heroically defend Red Shoes against the Prince, and Merlin and the princess begin to grow closer. He continues to help her find her father, saving her many times along the way until, finally, there seems to be an opportunity to receive a kiss from Red Shoes.

However, will the kiss restore Merlin’s true identity and attract Red Shoes to him more, or will both their secret identities and motives ruin their relationship and doom the Kingdom?

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS is a funny, endearing animated adventure. Positively, this animated movie is one that both parents and their children can enjoy because the twists keep viewers on their toes from the classic story that people know and love.

RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS has a strong moral worldview where love conquers evil and the importance of character over appearance. The voice acting and well-told story of honesty about one’s true identity makes this an entertaining, family-friendly movie. However, due to some cartoonish violence, flirting and use of magic, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children for RED SHOES AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.

A synopsis of the story

When Snow White’s father, the King, marries Regina (voice of Gina Gershon), a gorgeous woman reputed to be a witch, Snow White is sent away and slowly her father’s subjects begin to disappear. By the time she returns her father has also disappeared and Regina is desperately trying to recapture her youth and beauty through an apple tree that grows magical red shoes. Inadvertently donning a pair of the shoes, Snow White (voice of Chloe Grace Moretz) is instantly transformed from a strong, plain and plump young lady into a slim, curvy and ravishing beauty. Men fall all over themselves at the mere sight of her and cater to her every need but all Snow White wants is to find her father. Meanwhile, seven dashing young men have an unfortunate encounter with a fairy princess whom they saved but then attacked, thinking that she looked more like a witch than a princess. In return the fairy princess curses them, causing them to look like little, green dwarfs until such time as they can earn a kiss from the most beautiful princess of all. Defeated and discouraged, the dwarfs bide their time until Snow White literally flies into their lives. Wanting to keep her identity a secret she introduces herself as Red Shoes and enlists their help to find her father. Meanwhile the dwarfs are each hoping that she will kiss them and end their curse. While Red Shoes and the dwarfs search for her father, Regina searches for the mysterious beauty who has taken her shoes, pulling out every trick in the book to try and stop her no matter what the cost. While all the dwarfs became infatuated with Red Shoes at first sight, she begins to have feelings for Merlin (voice of Sam Clafin), the little green man who is always there to help and for whom she would gladly give her life. Ultimately, Merlin begins to understand that true beauty is not something you see with your eyes - it is something you see with your heart.

Themes info

Children and adolescents may react adversely at different ages to themes of crime, suicide, drug and alcohol dependence, death, serious illness, family breakdown, death or separation from a parent, animal distress or cruelty to animals, children as victims, natural disasters and racism. Occasionally reviews may also signal themes that some parents may simply wish to know about.

Evil curses; separation from a parent; the idea that ‘big’ is not beautiful and that youth and physical beauty are the most important characteristics of all.

Use of violence info

Research shows that children are at risk of learning that violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution when violence is glamourised, performed by an attractive hero, successful, has few real life consequences, is set in a comic context and / or is mostly perpetrated by male characters with female victims, or by one race against another.

Repeated exposure to violent content can reinforce the message that violence is an acceptable means of conflict resolution. Repeated exposure also increases the risks that children will become desensitised to the use of violence in real life or develop an exaggerated view about the prevalence and likelihood of violence in their own world.

There is some violence in this movie including:

  • A magic tree tries to ensnare Red Shoes with its branches. The tendrils chase after her and try to entrap her wherever she goes.
  • One of the dwarfs smacks Red Shoes in the back of the head with a frying pan before he realises his mistake.
  • There are numerous fight scenes that involve the: hitting, stabbing, punching, slicing, crushing, blasting, exploding, electrocuting, throwing, smashing, and smacking of characters.
  • A prince and his army launch a cannon ball at the dwarfs’ house. Merlin tosses it back to them and the house collapses around them.
  • Merlin’s magic often includes blasting things with electricity.
  • Red Shoes slaps one dwarf across the face when he tries to kiss her without her permission.
  • Merlin is held by the magic mirror tree and stretched across the branches as though he is about to be tortured. Later he is held in front of Red Shoes who is forced to eat a poison apple in order to save his life.
  • Merlin sacrifices himself by holding onto Regina, plunging off a cliff and using his magic to create an explosion. He is brought back to the castle, barely alive, where Red Shoes’ tears help break the spell. Regina does not survive.

Material that may scare or disturb children

Under five info.

Children under five are most likely to be frightened by scary visual images, such as monsters, physical transformations.

In addition to the above-mentioned violent scenes, there are some scenes in this movie that could scare or disturb children under the age of five, including the following:

  • Disguised as Merlin, Regina then transforms into the cruel witch that she is. With her powers waning she looks even more haggard, menacing and repulsive than before. Her evil appearance may upset some very young viewers.
  • Regina transforms Red Shoes into a tree. Her hair becomes gnarled branches and her face is a frozen mask as Regina explains to Merlin how she will slowly die.
  • Regina gives a prince and her guards some poisoned apples to eat. They each transform into rock monsters that set out to try to capture or kill Red Shoes and the dwarfs. The transformation itself looks painful and the monsters are relentless, repeatedly attempting to destroy Red Shoes. Ultimately it is Merlin who is trapped and nearly dies but Red Shoes manages to save him at the last moment.
  • There is a large bunny with glowing eyes that chases Red Shoes and Merlin through a dark forest late one night. The scene is a little intense and may concern some very young viewers.

Aged five to eight info

Children aged five to eight will also be frightened by scary visual images and will also be disturbed by depictions of the death of a parent, a child abandoned or separated from parents, children or animals being hurt or threatened and / or natural disasters.

  • Nothing further of concern.

Product placement

  • None noted.

Sexual references

Nudity and sexual activity.

There is some nudity and sexual activity in this movie, including:

  • The dwarfs all want Red Shoes to kiss them and try to create opportunities for this to happen.
  • Red Shoes and Merlin kiss on a couple of occasions.

Use of substances

Coarse language.

There is some coarse language in this movie, including:

  • Infrequent name calling such as: “Buffoons”, “Bumbling bits of kindling”, “Loser”, “Haggard old crone” and “Block head”.

In a nutshell

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is a twist on the classic tale of Snow White. Hailed as a family film and rated G it may, at first glance, appear to be a suitable for all ages but the unfortunate messages about basic values and body image necessitate an adult presence to help counteract and clarify some undesirable beliefs which younger children may unconsciously internalise.

The main messages from this movie are that appearances are the most important thing, that being old, large and physically unattractive are bad and that if you don’t conform to certain standards of beauty you are not worthwhile, others will be unable to see the good in you and may be reluctant to help you.

Values in this movie that parents may wish to reinforce with their children include:

  • Selflessness
  • Graciousness
  • Determination
  • The ability to see a person for who they are on the inside and not for how they look on the outside.

This movie could also give parents the opportunity to discuss with their children attitudes and behaviours, and their real-life consequences, such as:

  • Making fun of someone because they are large or heavy.
  • Ridiculing someone because of their height or the colour of their skin.
  • Making assumptions about others based only on physical appearance.
  • Wanting to be with someone simply because of how they look, regardless of what they want or who they are.
  • Using others for your own personal gain or to make yourself look better.

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by savannah sillito.

The Fearless Seven are a group of heroic princes who travel across a magical kingdom rescuing princesses, until one day they get on the bad side of a fairy princess who curses them by turning them into green dwarves. The only way to get back to their normal selves is to be kissed by a beautiful princess. At the same time, Princess Snow White (Chloë Grace Moretz) is searching for her missing father when she comes across a magical pair of shoes. When she puts them on, her appearance changes to make her more conventionally “beautiful”. These shoes belong to Snow’s evil stepmother, Regina (Gina Gershon), who will stop at nothing to get them back. Snow, now going by the name Red Shoes, enlists the help of the Fearless Seven, who see her as a means to breaking their curse. Together they set out to defeat Regina and find the missing king, while hopefully breaking the curse along the way.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves is a fractured fairy tale, much in the same style as Shrek or Hoodwinked. The writing is clever, the story is original, but the world is familiar. The movie doesn’t waste time on worldbuilding, and it doesn’t need to. The writers chose instead to focus on the characters. Each of the seven princes are given distinct personalities and flaws, and we come to care about each of them as they learn and grow. Snow White is a strong, confident woman who can hold her own against the men, but who also has some personal growing to do. The jokes are well-written, and even adults will find themselves laughing. Prince Average (Jim Rash) and the Magic Mirror (Patrick Warburton) are particularly hilarious, as well as perfectly cast.

Lacking much objectionable content, I feel I can whole-heartedly recommend this movie. I really enjoyed it and I laughed a lot. Kids will enjoy the magic and the silliness, while adults will appreciate some clever jokes and an original story. This is also a perfect jumping off point for important discussions about appearance and self-worth.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parents' Guide

How is Snow White treated differently when she is wearing the shoes? Do you see people being treated differently in real life because of how they look? How does Snow White feel about her new body and why does she tell Merlin she doesn’t feel like herself? What does Merlin learn about focusing on appearances?

Loved this movie? Try these books…

Fractured fairy tales are a rich genre to explore. For a good laugh, try out The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas. John Scieszka and Lane Smith take another kick at the same story in The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. Eric A Kimmel’s Little Red Hot features a caped girl who turns the tables on the big bad wolf. Falling for Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox and Lydia Monks will have little ones laughing as the long-tressed maiden repeatedly misunderstands the handsome prince’s requests. And for another twist on Snow White, try Davide Cali’s Snow White and the 77 Dwarfs.

There are also plenty of books to help kids love the skin they’re in. You can start with What I Like about Me by Allia Zobel Nolan and Miki Sakamoto and I Like Myself! By Karen Beaumont and David Catrow. Kids who hate their hair can benefit from I Love My Hair! By Natasha Anastasia Tarpley and E.B. Lewis. I Don’t Want Curly Hair! by Laura Ellen Anderson hits similar themes. Appreciating one’s racial or ethnic heritage is dealt with in Karen Katz’s The Colors of Us and Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o. Youngsters struggling with their weight will relate to Davide Cali’s titular heroine in Abigail the Whale. Kathy Caple’s Starring Hillary features a character who is desperate to lose weight before auditions for the play she wants to be in.

Parents trying to help their kids develop a positive body image can turn to several sources. Psychologist and journsalist Brenda Lane Richardson and Elane Rehr have written 101 Ways to Help Your Daughter Love Her Body. Good Girls Don’t Get Fat by Robyn Silverman tackles our culture’s dangerous fixation with weight and how parents can help their kids appreciate their own bodies.

Red Shoes Review

We had the pleasure of viewing the film recently, and if you know how we do our film reviews we like to ask our kids for their honest opinions on family films. Our kids are five and eight years old, so it is always great to get their perspective on these films.

Q: Who was your favorite character in the movie?

G:  I really liked Merlin! He had a lot of funny moments but I like how he tried defending Snow and his friends.

S : I liked the knights they were all funny and I like how they fought the bad guys with pots and pans. (Insert big laugh)

Q: What was your favorite part of the movie?

G: When Snow transforms into her true self and Merlin loves her the way she is.

S: When the knights fight the big rock guys and the wood teddy bears join in the fight.

Q: How was this story different from the Snow White Story?

G: Well in the Snow White movie the witch gives her a poisonous apple and in these one she gets to wear some really nice red shoes that transform her.

S: There is no Sleepy or Grumpy as dwarfs.

As you all can tell my kids really enjoyed the film and so did we, there were some really good laughable moments. Most importantly there was a good message behind the film, in that it deals with body positivity.

Which nowadays most girls struggle with, but boys do as well. The storyline talks about not having to worry about being someone you’re not, which in this day in age our kids need more than ever with the pressure of social media.

Having to look a certain way, or have certain types of clothes, this film is great for the entire family. It also gives way to open up these conversations up as a family.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Movie Review

Not your average take on a fairy tale….

I will be 100% honest. I was very unsure about Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs when I first watched the trailer. (You can read my full trailer reaction HERE. ) So much so I almost did not let my girls watch the movie with me. I mean the main character, Snow White, is transformed from her “average” looking self into a beautiful woman when she puts on a pair of magical shoes. A beautiful woman who everyone falls in love with. As a woman and a mother of two girls body image and how we view ourselves is almost an everyday inner and outward discussion. So, what do I think of Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs after watching the whole movie? Continue reading below for all of my thoughts, plus you can grab some activities inspired by the movie.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Spoiler Free Movie Review

I will try and not spoil the movie for anyone but Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs surprised me. It definitely is a lesson in not judging the whole movie by the trailer. The movie is a heartfelt discussion about body image, how we view ourselves, and the assumptions we make based on appearances. While watching Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs for the second time with my daughters my oldest, who is five years old, stated/asked, “I am beautiful just the way I am and you love me just the way I am, right Momma?”. Halfway through the movie my five year old already understood the whole concept of the movie. (It took me almost to the end of the movie the first time I watched it to come away with the messaging of the movie.) We adults should take notes from our children.

Going beyond the messaging of the movie Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs delivers tons of laughs and stunning animation. I highly recommend if you purchase the movie to watch the special features. In the special features, you will learn Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs was a labor of love taking years to make and being the first animated film with an all Korean production crew.

The voice cast of the movie is nothing to scoff at either. The movie is helmed by Chloë Grace Moretz, Sam Claflin , Gina Gershon, Patrick Warburton, and Jim Rash. If I were to select a stand out actor for the movie it would be Sam Claflin hands down as Merlin. If anything his character is the one who learns/grows the most throughout the movie.

I give Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs a solid B . The animation is spectacular, and while the story’s message is a good one the story could have used a little more fleshing out to make it less confusing. If you have children who scary easily there are some parts that could be considered scary, but those are more towards the end of the movie. Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is definitely a movie worth seeing and adding to your movie library for future watching.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Review: What Does It Teach Kids?

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs may not be exactly what you think it is thank to the failed marketing campaign. This movie teaches kids to be comfortable in their own skin.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs poster

When I first got offered the screener for Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs I admit, I was hesitant. Wasn’t this the movie whose marketing campaign basically labeled it a fat shaming movie? Why would I want to watch that, let alone let my children watch it. But I bit the bullet and accepted and boy, am I glad I did. This movie is not what you think it is going to be. It takes a while to get there, but ultimately it teaches kids the very important lesson of being comfortable in your own skin.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is a bit of a different take on Snow White. In this version Snow White’s stepmother is an evil witch, who uses a pair of red shoes to remain young and beautiful. When Snow White tries them on, she immediately shrinks about 8 sizes and looks more traditionally pretty. Yeah, I know.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs

Meanwhile, seven princes have accidentally attacked a fairy princess who put a curse on them. They claim she looked like a witch, so how were they to know. Again, I know. Anyways they shrink down to become seven “ugly” dwarfs who need true love’s kiss in order to return to their normal bodies.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs

Body Image Concerns

Let’s get the obvious thoughts out of the way right now, because I had them too. Doesn’t this sound like the movie is saying if you are overweight then you are ugly? Yes. And no. I mean at first it seems that way, I will always be honest with you guys. But after about an hour, the true message of the film comes through.

Yes some things that are said or implied made me nervous about what lessons my daughters might take from this movie. But in all honestly, they didn’t even think what I was. That part went right over their heads and it is not where their minds went. Which got me thinking maybe kids really will understand the true meaning of this movie from the beginning.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is kind of long for a kids movie, coming in at just about two hours. And like I said the first hour might be a little hard to watch. Not because it isn’t entertaining or is slow, but because of where you think the movie is going.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs

Luckily, it takes a sharp turn when you truly realize that Snow White, calling herself Red Shoes when wearing them, does not want to wear the shoes. In fact, she never did. She tries to take them off several times. Snow White only wears them when she needs to and when she first put them on, she didn’t even know what they were going to do to her body. Actually when she first saw her new body, she wasn’t happy about it.

Snow White often talks about how without the shoes she is happier, more herself, and even stronger. She has been really getting to know all the princes, and loves being around them. She is growing especially close to Merlin, who is the one most determined to get back to his true self. Constantly talking about how is handsomer, but she doesn’t even care. She thinks he is perfect the way he is.

Eventually they both learn the true meaning on beauty — that it is on the inside. Which is the message I really think this movie was trying to tell from the beginning. They may have taken the long road, but they eventually got there.

red shoes witch

The Rest Of The Story

Being comfortable in your own skin is clearly the message this film is trying to point out to kids, but there is a lot more going on in this movie too. The evil witch is trying to track down “Red Shoes” to get her shoes back. Why? Because she needs more than anything to be beautiful. It is sad really that this is the only thing that is important to her.

Snow White is busy trying to track down her missing father so she can tell him that he married a witch. She is doing this with the help of the former princes, now dwarfs. They get into some funny hijinks along the way and it truly is entertaining.

red shoes prince average

One of my favorite characters is Prince Average who totally owns being a total jerk. He is shallow. He is rude. And he wants to find himself a beautiful princess. So of course, he is on the lookout for Red Shoes as well. He reminded me so much of someone and I could not place it. Then my friend told me he reminds her of King George in Hamilton and a light bulb went off in my head. That is exactly who he reminds me of too. He will sure make you laugh, I can promise you that.

Overall Thoughts

Parents, I can one hundred percent understand your concerns with this movie because I had them too. My daughters and 7 and 9 and the last thing I want is for them to feel they are not pretty enough. But in the interest of honesty, they never once got that message from Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs.

They laughed, yelled at mean Prince Average, and rooted for Merlin and the other dwarfs to find true love. They also mentioned a few times how poor Snow White just wanted her normal body back, and how she was prettier that way anyways.

When it ended I asked them to tell me what the moral of this movie is and the answer surprised me. My youngest daughter said “ to always be yourself ” and her sister chimed in with “ everyone is beautiful in their own skin. ”

From an adult perspective this movie is probably about thirty minutes too long. They could solve some of the mixed messaging but cutting stuff from the beginning. But once it ended, I really wasn’t mad at the beginning. Not like I thought I would be anyways. But in all honesty, a movie that sucks my children in for a full two hours isn’t such a bad thing.

From a kid standpoint? Clearly this movie resonated the way the studio wanted it to with my daughters, even if I was worried it wouldn’t. Maybe sometimes we just have to have faith in our children that they can and will understand the true meaning of things.

Just saw this. Glad if your kids enjoyed this, but I know kids who love Power Puff Girls and the Emoji movie. It’s not always a guide to the best films. Sorry. Some kids have bad taste.

This is an AWFUL movie, just a pastiche of “Shrek” (and maybe more so, the worse “Shrek 2”) plus misc. stuff they steal from Beauty & the Beast (the ending, total steal) and Rapunzel (Mother Goethel, ahem). There isn’t one original moment in the whole mess.

I wanted badly to think this film was NOT about how ugly fat Snow White is vs. Gorgeous Snow White, but sorry…..that’s what it is. NO amount of sermonizing can change that. Only when she is gorgeous does Snow White have the power to get the favors that ultimately get her back her father (*who is a helpless non-entity). Most of the film we see her as Gorgeous Snow White, and indeed, much of her beauty is her THINNESS. On top of that, the “real Merlin” (what’s with mixing in The Sword In The Stone and the Arthurian legend? huh?) is very handsome and he HATES being short, homely and green. There is never ONE POINT in which the character get together where both are beautiful — or both “homely”.

What this film clearly teaches is that while you might be loved no matter if you are fat or homely…. you will. ever have POWER or AGENCY or get others to adore you unless you are thin and beautiful. It doesn’t matter how YOU feel about yourself, because Snow White would not have saved her father (nor her own life) without the HELP she was given because she was GORGEOUS.

That’s on top of very unfunny jokes — forgettable music — and animation that looks like it was done in the 90s. I think some of the problem here is the South Korean studio — in what I think is the first major full-length Korean animated movie, at least, the first aimed at the US market — really doesn’t understand European fairy tales at ALL, nor an American sense of humor. They should have stuck to Korean fairy tales or folk legends.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parent Movie Review

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parent Movie Review

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is a twist on the classic fairytale. This is not your typical Snow White story. Is this modern spoof kid-friendly? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements in my Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parent Movie Review to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parent Movie Review

Snow White is my absolute FAVORITE Disney princess. I remember meeting her for the first time at Disney World when I was 6 years old. When my family returned home from that vacation I asked my mom if I could be Snow White when I grew up. Clearly she made a lasting impression.

When I was offered the opportunity to review Lionsgate’s Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, I jumped at it. A new take on my favorite princess? I was determined to keep an open mind and see what it was all about.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

Let’s jump right in. Once upon a time there were seven handsome princes who mistakenly called a fairy a witch. She wasn’t too happy about this accusation and put a spell on them that turned them into “ugly” dwarfs. The only way the spell could be broken is with true love’s kiss.

Switch over to Snow White and her evil Stepmother, Regina, who is actually a witch. Regina wears a pair of red shoes to stay young and beautiful. Snow White doesn’t know these shoes are magical and tries them on. Magically, she turns beautiful and loses about 50 pounds.

I know. That sounds awful. But I promise you there’s much more to this story.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

The Theme of Body Positivity

While you might be thinking Snow White is happy with her new appearance, you couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, she tries to remove the shoes several times. She misses how strong she used to be without the shoes, saying they make her more “dainty.” The one time she manages to get her shoes off, she lays back on her bed with a sigh of relief. It reminded me of the saying “ take your shoes off, get comfortable! ” Snow White cannot be truly comfortable with the red shoes, because she feels like she’s pretending to be someone she’s not.

As for the dwarfs…they are determined more than ever to win over Snow White, who calls herself “Red Shoes,” in an attempt to break the spell. They do make the comment “ who could ever love a face like this? ” However, they pull out all sorts of crazy antics to get that kiss.

Although the dwarfs see themselves as ugly, Red Shoes makes the comment, “ I don’t care about your height or what color you are. ” She genuinely likes the dwarfs for who they are on the inside.

Although it might seem for a second that this movie is body shaming, it really is not. In fact, it offers a message that is the exact opposite. The importance of being your true self is what is really beautiful and should be celebrated.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Snow and Merlin

Similarities to other fairytales

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is compared to The Wizard of Oz meets Tangled , and I do see that. But I also saw other fairytales as well.

First of all, yes, the red shoes are obviously relevant to The Wizard of Oz. The shoes are magical and provide youth and beauty. This is similar to Rapunzel’s magical hair in Tangled. The evil stepmother has similarities to Mother Gothel. The village also resembled the same one in Tangled, and even the “Wanted” poster seemed very much alike Flynn Ryder’s.

Okay. Was I the only one who caught the connection between the evil stepmother’s name, REGINA, and the series Once Upon a Time?! In the television series, Once Upon a Time, Snow White’s evil stepmother is named Regina. I picked up on this one right away!

There is also a connection to Beauty and The Beast. The fairy casts a spell on the seven handsome princes turning them into ugly dwarfs. The only way the spell can be broken is by true love. Sounds familiar, right?

This connection wasn’t as obvious, but there are these giant rocks that are attacking Red Shoes and the dwarfs. They even throw huge boulders at them. This was similar to the Earth Giants in Frozen 2 !

I loved seeing all of the connections to other fairytales! It was fun to guess which one would be next!

Evil Stepmother Regina and Magic Mirror

Is Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Kid-Friendly?

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is rated PG for some action/peril. There really isn’t anything too scary other than a few fighting scenes. But overall, they’re rather tame. The evil stepmother might be scary looking, but her scenes with the snarky Magic Mirror make her seem a little less frightening.

The movie has a running time of 1 hour 32 minutes, which is really the sweet spot for a kids film. My 6 year old actually made the comment, “ I stayed in the room the whole time! ” when it was over.

I asked my 10 year old what the message was in the movie, and he immediately said, “ it’s what’s inside that’s important. ” I love, love, LOVE when my kids really get the message.

I’d recommend Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs for all ages. There really is a great message and a fun story they will enjoy.

Movie Review – Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

The world is a crazy place to live in these days. Some days I just want to close the curtains, get snuggly on the couch and pop in a good movie that will take my mind off of current events. Ideally I’d love to be whisked off to some far off land (a tropical island perhaps?). However, an hour or two in a fairytale will also do.

Speaking of fairytales, there is a new, animated film that is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and on digital. It’s called Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs.

The film stars the voice talents of Chloë Grace Moretz, Sam Claflin, Gina Gershon, Jim Rash and Patrick Warburton, to name a few.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is a computer animated film produced by the Locus Corporation. It is loosely based off the Danish Fairy Tale, The Red Shoes . In fact, it’s a good mix of that fairy tale and S now White and the Seven Dwarfs.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

Snow White (Moretz) lives with her evil step-mother Regina (Gershon). Snow White’s father married Regina before he knew she was an evil witch. Now her father has gone missing, and she knows that Regina has something to do with it.

Snow White is a beautiful girl, but she is a bit overweight (sadly, that makes a difference in the movie).

Regina is aging rapidly. The only way she can restore her youth is to place a magical pair of red shoes on her feet. The shoes grow off a special tree, similar to an apple.

One night, as Snow White was trying to search for her father, she stumbled across the red shoes. She was drawn to them and eventually putting them on her feet. Magically the shoes turned her into a beautiful girl.

Regina appears and tries to get the shoes back from Snow White, but she was able to escape on one of Regina’s magical brooms.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

Snow White crash lands at the home of seven dwarfs. The dwarfs weren’t always little green men. They used to be known as the Magnificent Seven – Merlin, Arthur, Jack, Hans, and triplets Pino, Noki and Kio. Sadly, a curse changed them from humans to dwarfs, placed on them by another witch. The only way to break the spell is the be kissed by the most beautiful girl in the world. But who would want to kiss an ugly, little green dwarf?

When the dwarfs stumble upon Snow White, they were enchanted by her beauty. They knew she was the one that could break the spell. All they needed to do was get her to kiss them.

Snow White was reluctant to tell them who she really was, so she told them that her name was Red Shoes.

The dwarfs agree to help Red Shoes find her father, all in hopes that they could win her heart so she’d kiss them and they can return to their human selves.

Will Red Shoes find her father before it’s too late? Will Red Shoes reveal who she really is to her new friends? WIll any of the dwarfs get kissed by Red Shoes to break the spell? To find out you need to purchase or rent Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs. Look for it where ever movies are sold/rented.

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

I really enjoyed this film. It caught my attention from the very beginning. Sometimes films are slow to start, but this film hooked me in right away.

The animation is spectacular. From the fine details on all the characters, to the realistic looking scenery. The animation is top notch.

I found all of the characters very likeable. Of course my favorite was Snow White (I preferred her over her Red Shoes character).

The only issue I have with this film is the whole weight/looks story line. Snow White is a little bit chubby, but she’s still incredibly adorable. She enjoys the attention she gets being Red Shoes. As an obese person, I think she should have learned to love herself as she truly is, and not the make believe character Red Shoes.

There was also an incident in the film where her weight kind of turned off one of the characters. I don’t want to give away the story line, but that part didn’t sit well with me. In the end it worked out fine, but I wish they could have put a more positive spin on the fact that how you look doesn’t effect who you are as a person (in the end it felt that way, but there were parts of the film it did not – if that makes sense?).

red shoes and the seven dwarfs movie review

The film is funny, and I’m sure both parents and children will find plenty of parts to laugh at. The way the dwarfs fawn all over Red Shoes is funny. I also think the character Prince Average (Av-er-RAJ) is funny too.

There is action and adventure in this film, which is why I think both girls and boys will enjoy this. Just because it’s about a princess, does not mean it’s a “girly” film.

I ended up watching the digital version of the film, but there are bonus features on the Blu-ray.

  • “The Making of Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs ” Featurette
  • “From Storyboard to Animation: Creating Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs ” Featurette
  • “Start of Something Right” Music Video
  • “Something So Beautiful” Music Video

I loved the music in this film. I especially like “Start of Something Right.” I would definitely put that on my Spotify playlist (both songs actually).

The film has a run time of 92 minutes and is rate PG for some of the action sequences.

Below are some fun activities you can enjoy while you watch the film. One is a cute craft project (I might make this with my “work kids”), and the other is a yummy recipe.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs , known in Korean as simply Red Shoes , is a 2019 English-language South Korean animated fantasy film produced by Locus Corporation. It is based on the 1812 German-language fairy tale "Snow White" by the Brothers Grimm , and its name is derived from the 1845 Danish fairy tale The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Andersen. The film features the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz , Sam Claflin , Gina Gershon, Patrick Warburton , and Jim Rash .

A group of heroic princes called the Fearless Seven— Merlin , Arthur , Jack, Hans, and identical triplets Pino, Noki and Kio—save a Fairy Princess from a dragon. However, once they see her green face, they assume that she is a witch and attack her. To teach them a lesson, she curses them to transform into green dwarfs whenever people look at them, and the only way to undo the curse is if they receive a kiss from "the most beautiful woman in the world".

Seven years later, the King's overweight but strong daughter, Princess Snow White ("Snow"), returns to her family castle, where her stepmother, Queen Regina, has taken over. She finds a diary about how Queen Regina had taken over the kingdom with a warning from her father, the rightful king, not to touch the shoes she finds hanging on a tree. Snow puts on the shoes regardless, and they transform her into a slim version of herself. Queen Regina suddenly attacks her, unaware that she is Snow. Snow escapes but crashes at the dwarves' house, alerting the seven nearby. They prepare to attack, thinking she is the Fairy Princess, but welcome her into their home upon seeing her. In the dwarves' house, Snow is shocked when she sees herself in the mirror and introduces herself as "Red Shoes". The seven are immediately smitten by her and strive to impress her so she might kiss them. Regina hires the selfish Prince Average of a neighboring realm, who sends his soldiers after Snow, though she is saved by Merlin. Average attacks the dwarves and tries to abduct Red Shoes but fails. That night, Snow and Merlin grow emotionally closer. Regina gives Average and his bodyguards a magic apple and turns them into monsters.

In a secluded forest, Snow tries to give Merlin a hint about her real self but instead confesses her feelings for him, and they kiss. Merlin is shocked to see that the kiss did not undo his curse as he still thinks Snow is the prophetic beautiful woman. He fights off an attack by Average, who falls into a river, taking Merlin with him. Snow saves Merlin but accidentally loses her shoes and reverts to her true appearance. She calls out Merlin for helping her only because of her looks, causing him to leave in shame. She then puts on her shoes again, hoping to reconcile with him. Merlin talks with his dwarf self and, realizing that Snow White likes him for himself, decides to help her. In the forest, Queen Regina disguises herself as Merlin and asks Snow to eat the apple and take off her shoes, but the real Merlin arrives, and the exposed queen escapes with Snow.

Queen Regina tries to force Snow to eat the apple. When her stepdaughter refuses, she threatens to kill a captured Merlin. Snow tells Merlin to save her father and eats the apple, transforming her into an apple tree. Merlin fails to escape from queen's mirror until the other dwarves save him. Merlin sacrifices himself by falling down the castle with Regina to save Snow. Pino, Noki, and Kio take him to Snow, and he admits his sincere romantic feelings before dying in her arms. Snow gives Merlin one last kiss, reviving him and restoring his human form for good. They happily accept each others' appearances, while the other dwarves remain confused by Snow White's true appearance.

In the end credits, Snow and Merlin marry, while the other princes find their own unusual-looking girlfriends. The Fairy Princess fishes Average out of a river and turns him into another green dwarf after he makes a rude remark.

  • Chloë Grace Moretz as Princess Snow White/Red Shoes; an overweight version of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale character, who is kind, selfless, and a strong hand-to-hand fighter. Her alias, " Red Shoes ", is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story of the same name.
  • Sam Claflin as Merlin ; a heroic, athletic, but somewhat conceited prince and the leader of the Fearless Seven, who fights using magical lightning and initially judges women based on their looks.
  • Gina Gershon as Queen Regina; Snow White's stepmother and an evil witch seeking to steal back her stepdaughter's shoes to achieve immortality and eternal youth.
  • Patrick Warburton as the Magic Mirror ; a snarky, talking mirror based on the Evil Queen's mirror of the original story. He is part of a magical tree and controls its branches.
  • Jim Rash as Prince Average; a selfish, weak-willed prince who tries to force Snow White to be his birthday date.
  • Simon Kassianides as Arthur ; Merlin's closest friend, his rival for Snow White's affection, and the second-in-command of the Fearless Seven, who fights with swords.
  • Frederik Hamel as Jack ; an arrogant, French-accented prince in the Fearless Seven, who fights using an invisibility cloak and believes women are most interested in diamonds.
  • Hans is a pastry chef and one of the Fearless Seven, whose main weapon is a shield that doubles as a frying pan and believes women can be won over with confectionery .
  • The Twin Guards are two muscular but dim bodyguards of Prince Average.
  • King White is Snow White's slightly overweight but loving father and Regina's husband.
  • Frank Todaro as Pino, Noki, and Kio ; inventive, identical triplets in the Fearless Seven who fight using a giant wooden robot of their creation.
  • Brian T. Delaney as Big Bunny and Sculptor.
  • Piotr Michael and Benjamin Diskin as two armored knights sent by Regina to find Snow White.
  • Ava Kolker , Asher Blinkoff , and Juju Journey Brener as the Wooden Bear Cubs.

Additional voices by Brian T. Delaney , Benjamin Diskin , Terri Douglas, Piotr Michael , Amanda Troop, and Kari Wahlgren .

Critical reception

Reception of the film has mixed. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Fat shaming controversy

A marketing campaign for the film revealed at the 2017 Cannes Marché du Film was criticized by critics and audiences for alleged fat shaming. [6] [7] Chloë Grace Moretz , who voiced Snow/Red Shoes, stated she was "appalled" by the marketing that she felt it did not reflect the actual film's message. [8] The production company immediately terminated the campaign and issued an apology, stating: [9]

As the producer of the theatrical animated film Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs , now in production, Locus Corporation wishes to apologize regarding the first elements of our marketing campaign (in the form of a Cannes billboard and a trailer) which we realize has had the opposite effect from that which was intended. That advertising campaign is being terminated. Our film, a family comedy, carries a message designed to challenge social prejudices related to standards of physical beauty in society by emphasizing the importance of inner beauty. We appreciate and are grateful for the constructive criticism of those who brought this to our attention. We sincerely regret any embarrassment or dissatisfaction this mistaken advertising has caused to any of the individual artists or companies involved with the production of future distribution of the film, none of whom had any involvement with creating or approving the now discontinued advertising campaign.

Later sources, including organizations aimed at promoting positive messaging in family entertainment, would be more sympathetic to the film, noting that Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is "loaded with valuable lessons for children and adults" [10] and "promotes body image and self-acceptance, while confronting stereotypes." 17. Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Parent Movie Review
