What Is a Capstone Project in Engineering?

For Faculty Lecturer Alyssa McCluskey , the capstone project at the University of Colorado’s Engineering Management Program (EMP) boils down to two things: agency and opportunity. 

Agency, because students can chart their own course. And opportunity, arising from that agency, allows students to become leaders on their own or within their organizations. McCluskey ought to know: Capstone worked for her as a student and she knew, eventually, it could work for others as well.

“In my civil engineering capstone, we could explore and create different solutions to the use of biosolids, and I was really proud of the report and presentation that we produced,” McCluskey says. “I did send the report to my future employer, a research institute in Boston, and was hired partially based on the document that I had sent them. And I just remember really enjoying the process. So I wanted to bring that to this Program as something to offer the students.

What Is a Capstone Project?

In the Engineering Management Program, students can now elect to cap off their engineering curriculum with a capstone project. The project can be anything that uses their management and engineering skills to make a product, design software or find innovative ways to affect change within their industry.

In the past, students were given a list of topics to write an 8-10 page paper using concepts learned throughout the program to culminate their degree. McCluskey found that the traditional method was serving neither students nor faculty well. This method seemed like just regurgitating material and lacked a meaningful experience for students to use what they learned throughout the degree.

Looking for more flexible options for CU students, the EMP decided to offer two paths for degree completion: completing the full coursework, 30 credit hours, or taking 27 credit hours of coursework and completing a final 3-credit capstone project in their final semester. 

“We made the capstone flexible so students can explore any ideas or topics of interest,” McCluskey says. “Anything from hot topics in project management to anything they found interesting over their courses in the EMP. I encourage them to look at courses they really enjoyed, talk with professors they enjoyed learning from, meet with professionals working in areas they are interested in and think of topics around that.”

A Diverse Range of Capstone Project Ideas

EMP just launched this program and there are four students in the first cohort, each working on a unique capstone project. All of them are focused on finding practical solutions to real-world problems.

One student’s capstone is about finding effective methods and tactics to increase employee engagement within the Office of Information Technology (OIT).

“This is a student who’s employed at OIT at CU,” McCluskey says. “And so she was asking how do we retain our employees and make them happy and want to stay? She found some startling statistics that close to 50% of employees are thinking of leaving.”

This capstone is especially topical given the nature of the Great Resignation where many employees are seeking better opportunities and are no longer willing to settle for the status quo.

“She did a number of surveys, listened to podcasts, took some courses and came up with a plan that she’s trying to implement within her department based on the capstone she worked on,” McCluskey adds. 

Another fascinating engineering capstone project idea was one student’s mission to make a more sustainable satellite, combining interests in both sustainability and the aerospace industry. 

“They developed a tool to quantify the environmental impacts of producing, launching and disposing of a satellite,” McCluskey says. After inputting the information into a spreadsheet, it comes out with “the carbon footprint of what the satellite would produce. And not only that but also ranking which areas you should spend your [resources] and get the most bang for the buck that’s most probably going to reduce your carbon footprint,” McCluskey says.

Given the concerns about orbital “space junk,” this capstone project addresses a need in aerospace that could be all the more germane as technology allows us to explore beyond our own planet.

And for the person on the move  whose arms are constantly full and trying to literally—and figuratively—juggle the messiness of life, one student came to the capstone project with an idea already in hand: “merge bottle technology”—magnetized stacking water bottles that allow you to carry different beverages or food in one place, even at different temperatures.

“What I saw was great,” McCluskey says. “As a parent, you’re having to carry all these things, right? Also, he found that people in the healthcare industry and first responders who might be on a shift for a long time were interested right away. You can keep something hot, you can keep something cold, you could put food in one and drinks in another. Teachers as well. They have all these bags and bunches of containers they carry around. So instead of having multiple water bottles for your coffee and your water, you could just carry one stack.”

Yet another capstone project focuses on the uncertainties inherent in software product development and how that uncertainty affects humans at the neurobiological level. 

“This student is in the software product management field, so she studied how we can better support employees to deal with uncertainty,” McCluskey says, “and she came up with four main things that companies can do to help their employees deal with that.”

The capstone project identified four key strategic theories—frequent stakeholder communication, a transparent roadmap with dependencies, iterative feedback opportunities and integration and focus on analytics—that empower product managers to ameliorate uncertainty among stakeholders during the software development process. 

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that students focus their capstone project not on abstract concepts, but on tangible strategies that have the potential for immediate real-world application. As a result, these capstone projects can help a student stand out as a desirable employee and a potential leader in their field or company.

Communication and Research: Soft Skills for Engineers that Pay Dividends

Many people—even many experts— know their field and products inside and out but struggle with communicating their ideas and knowledge to key audiences within their company or to clients. To help develop these skills, part of the capstone project incorporates a communication course. 

“This involves working on your writing, working on your presentation skills, and working on peer reviews,” McCluskey says. 

Good communication also means translating sometimes complex ideas and knowledge into a “language” that a wide audience can understand. That’s a skill that students refine over the course of their projects. 

“You may understand something so well that you’re using acronyms others don’t know and you just lose the reader right away,” McCluskey says. “So that’s something we spend some time on. What’s nice is that we switch throughout the semester with our peers as well as the instructors and advisors so that if anybody is unfamiliar with something, it’s highlighted.”

Another benefit of the capstone project is that it allows students to stretch and improve their research skills beyond the usual Google search. Rachel Knapp, assistant professor and applied sciences librarian at CU, spoke to the capstone cohort and went over online resources available to CU students via OneSearch and discussed best practices in research strategies—for instance, how to narrow a topic and get the best out of information searches and how to determine which journals you may want to publish in. If capstone students get “stuck” in their research or are not getting the results hoped for, they can set up an appointment with a CU librarian to help with ideas and options. 

Armed with this information, the capstone gives the students a chance to put into action much of what they’ve learned during the EMP and presents a valuable opportunity to live out what being an engineering manager is all about.

“They come in and they are the project manager of their capstones, ” McCluskey says. “So they get a chance to implement all the things you can think of that go into that: time management, building out your product schedule, problem-solving skills, thinking ahead, identifying what you might run into that’s going to cause a problem. They start to build their confidence because they’re now experts on this topic.”

Taking on a project of this nature flexes many skills including writing and planning, constructively giving peer feedback, and setting and achieving goals—while also making a student an attractive hire or a more effective contributor in their current position.

“The student who created the toolbox for the sustainable satellite,” McCluskey says, “is actually presenting to some higher-ups in his company who have expressed interest in what he’s done. So that’s not only letting our student be seen by people up in his organization but also giving him a way forward and fast track in that sense.”

“This is a Chance to Explore Something That Interests You”

For students, these ideas for capstone projects lead to something beyond typical coursework: the freedom to explore. Instead of listening to lectures and wondering, “Will this be on the test?” EMP capstone cohorts take the reins of their interests and bring those ideas to the world with the idea of solving a problem for individuals  (teachers/mothers/first responders) or an entire industry (more sustainable satellite building for aerospace).

“This is a chance to explore something that interests you,” McCluskey says. “You’re not coming to a class prescribed exactly what you have to learn. You get to choose where you want to put your time and where your interests lie. It’s a win-win: You’re getting credit for it, and you're also coming out with something that you might personally believe in or want to move forward with.”

McCluskey is proof positive of the benefits of the capstone. She still works with advisors she knew from 30 years ago. 

She says, “You’re really developing those relationships as well, not only with your classmates through working together in peer reviews and class, but also with your advisor and other professionals you interact with over the semester.” 

“I’m their guide on this adventure,” McCluskey adds. “I bring in some guest speakers so they can learn from outside experts. I try to base the guest speakers on student interests like entrepreneurship and journal editors for publishing papers to help spark and refine student ideas. I also have lectures and guest speakers on communication best practices throughout the course, and then help them stay on track.”

Advisors, faculty or working professionals who are chosen by each student, meet with them at least five times over the semester, all the while reviewing the work. These relationships may bear fruit later in a career and provide an important sounding board for bouncing around new ideas.

And in the end, the progress made quite literally puts a capstone on the Engineering Management Program.

“It gives you confidence and pride in the culmination of your degree,” McCluskey says. “It's not just a piece of paper, you actually have a product that you've developed and the ability that you can do something like this.”

Engineering Capstone Projects: For EMP, It’s Just the Beginning

For McCluskey, this is an exciting time. Seeing the four students come through the capstone project fills her with optimism for the future of the project and, more importantly, what it offers to EMP students willing to take on the capstone and flex their engineering skills.

She sees students come in with ideas that are all over the board and then with her help along with other advisors, refine the ideas so they are manageable and attainable. It is gratifying for McCluskey to hear what the cohort had achieved at the end of this pilot program.

“We had them present to all the advisors at the end of the semester and they offered beautiful presentations,” she says. “They were high quality. They were very articulate. They answered questions. It was fun to see the advisors’ excitement with the different products.”

It could be that one student's capstone becomes the cornerstone of another student’s in the future; that it could, as McCluskey says, “spawn another idea for the next capstone. There might be somebody interested in a project that someone else did before and they could take it to the next step.”

For now, the capstone project is offered only in the spring semester, but with growing interest, it could be offered every semester.

The hope is that each session of capstone projects will spur more inspiration and more innovation.

“I was ready for some bumps along the road,” McCluskey says. “I was able to be pretty agile and move where I saw the needs that were there. So I’m really excited to learn more from these students and watch more students grow from an idea to a product they’re proud of. So I’m excited to just have more of them.”

During the 2018 spring semester, two teams of five MechSE undergradudates created two new interactive astronomy-themed exhibits for the Orpheum Children's Science Museum in Champaign, Illinois. “Asteroid Mine” and “Orphy’s Escape to Space” are first-of-their-kind projects for the Senior Capstone Design Program. The students were given full autonomy to conceive, design, and build the exhibits, and they collaborated with Orpheum staff and MechSE faculty advisors. Hydraulic bike for the Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge

The goal of the 2018 spring semester team for the hydraulic bike project was to create a hydraulic system capable of powering and driving a bicycle for the National Fluid Power Association's vehicle challenge. Requirements include a power input, drive motor, a mechanism to store hydraulic power, and regenerative braking. The team produced a functioning treadle pump and hydraulic motor system with improved valving and consistent hydraulic flow.

Wabash Valley projects sought for Rose-Hulman senior year civil engineering course

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seniors are seeking to culminate their education by working in teams during the 2024-25 school year to complete civil engineering projects for Wabash Valley organizations and companies.

The projects must feature at least two sub-disciplines within civil engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation and site development.

Ideal projects would come from municipalities along with non-profit, charitable or church organizations, according to Jim Hanson, head of the department of civil and environmental engineering.

Projects should have a service component to provide students with the ability to identify, investigate and address a community need.

Past local senior-year capstone projects have helped plan the proposed Riley Spur trail, upgrades to Fairbanks Park, and expansions for local youth sports organizations and communities.

Organizations have used the students’ work as the basis for seeking local, state and federal grants for their projects.

The senior-year capstone design course provides students an opportunity to work with external clients on a long-range project that covers the entire school year.

Teams of three to five students begin investigating the client’s needs and propose a solution during September and October, and authorization is granted in November to proceed on detailed design.

Faculty project reviews begin in early April and reports are presented to clients in early May.

Although most Rose-Hulman faculty members are licensed professional engineers, Hanson says they’re reviewing students’ work as educators.

Depending upon the project, the students’ designs might be detailed enough to begin construction, if approved by a professional engineer, or the designs might be only at the level to provide a feasibility study for the project.

Projects are completed at little to no cost for clients, but they are asked to sign a release or waiver of liability before the project is initiated.

Civil engineering involves the design, construction, maintenance and inspection of large infrastructure projects.

Through coursework and lab experience, a civil engineering emphasis will give you a background in areas including soil properties and analyses pertinent to engineering problems and designs; highway and airfield engineering; hydrologic analysis of precipitation, hydraulic analysis and design of water runoff, storm water management and flood frequency forecasting; and classical and matrix methods for analyzing simple and continuous structures.

Undecided about which of these two emphases to choose? You can pursue a B.S. in engineering and take a varied slate of courses from both areas, graduating with a General Emphases distinction.

Mechanical engineering involves the design, manufacturing, inspection and maintenance of machinery, equipment and components, as well as control systems and instruments for monitoring their status and performance.

The mechanical engineering degree emphasis will include areas of study such as the theory and application of fundamental heat transfer concepts including conduction, convection and radiation; analysis and design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; fatigue behavior in structural machine elements such as beam supports, rods and drive shafts; and the selection and use of components including electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic that are used in mechanical systems.

Capstone Team Projects Give You a Jump

on relevant work experience.

Every Ouachita engineering major will use what they've learned in the program in a series of capstone classes to strengthen their skills in their chosen profession. These open-ended team design projects are conducted throughout senior year. Capstone I, offered in the fall, is the planning phase where projects are assigned, sites are visited and organization begins. Capstone II follows in the spring, when project design is executed and results are presented in both written and oral formats.

Prerequisites

The best-prepared students seeking a B.S. degree in engineering will be Pre-calculus ready as entering freshmen and have additional college course credits (such as Composition I) to aid in the scheduling process.

ABET Accreditation Status

Formal application for accreditation can be made to ABET when the first engineering cohort graduates. Once accreditation is granted, it applies to future program graduates and retroactively to all who completed the program in the year prior to the date of approval.

Become a Professional Engineer

After you graduate with a B.S. in engineering from Ouachita, these are your next steps to becoming a Professional Engineer:

  • Become classified as an engineer intern by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
  • Complete at least four years of qualifying engineering experience.

NSF CAREER Award recipient develops real-time machine learning technology for small, low-energy devices

Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Ramtin Zand has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to study computing systems for real-time machine learning technologies. Zand’s five-year, nearly $600,000 project is expected to produce smaller, faster and smarter machine learning computing systems for use in real-world applications without reliance on large servers.

Zand will lead his team in his Intelligent Circuits, Architectures and Systems ( ICAS ) Lab  to create a heterogeneous machine learning system that will enable the implementation of computer vision and large language models on energy and resource-constrained devices.

“Our project is focused on real-world machine learning applications that can be processed in tiny, battery-powered devices,” Zand says. “You can’t always rely on having an Internet connection, so they should be able to process quickly, in real time, without access to large data centers.”

Zand’s research combines neuromorphic and edge computing to simulate how the brain works while using tiny, energy-efficient devices. Neuromorphic computing uses specialized hardware and software algorithms to process data more efficiently, while edge computing refers to making more efficient machine learning models that can run on small devices.

Sign language translation is one of the targeted applications in the project. Zand’s team will use vision and language models to create sign language translation technology that facilitates seamless communication between sign language users and others. After recognizing hand gestures and facial expressions, the team will convert signs to spoken language. All of these components will be assigned as tasks to computing systems and architectures, creating a heterogenous system that uses a combination of solutions to build a useful computing system.

Once developed, the technology will be deployed on portable, wearable devices for on-demand use. The outcome of this work can empower those with hearing and speech impairments, fostering inclusive communication and workforce diversity.

“In the last two decades, nearly 70% of the assistant professors in the department have secured this award, marking a noteworthy accomplishment,” says Homayoun Valafar , chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering . “Dr. Zand’s project and long-term goals align perfectly with the department's mission, and his work is essential to the success of our neuromorphic computing, machine learning and edge computing efforts.”

Per NSF CAREER Award requirements, Zand’s project will integrate research, education and outreach by developing cross-disciplinary curricula and online educational resources. He is offering a graduate course on edge commuting that, previously offered in spring 2020 as a Special Topics course, will become an official part of the department’s curriculum in spring 2025. He is also collaborating with American Sign Language instructors in the Linguistics program to create data sets for vision and language models. Students will perform hand gestures and collect data resulting in an unbiased, diverse data set. In addition, the team is creating educational content for YouTube, including five-minute presentations on various aspects of the research.

"My students, Brendan Reidy, Mohammadreza Mohammadi, Blake Seekings, Peyton Chandarana and Mohammed Elbtity, played an important role in the success of this project and proposal. From brainstorming ideas to collecting preliminary results, and engaging in outreach activities, their contributions were invaluable,” Zand says.

According to Zand, a variety of machine learning systems in applications such as robotics, self-driving cars and assistive technologies require real-time computation and low energy use to ensure extended battery life. Beyond sign language translation, the methodology and framework developed in this project can pave the way for real-time technology in many other domains.

“I am very interested in building things that are scalable and have a large impact,” he says. “If we can have small gadgets that can be used for different applications, it can change people’s lives. This kind of research makes that possible because it specifically focuses on converting large-scale AI and machine learning systems to small scale systems that can be accessible to anyone.”

New home for health care innovators

Engineering researchers Seth Weinberg, Megan Malara and Jonathan Song stand outside of the Pelotonia Research Center

In Ohio State’s Pelotonia Research Center, engineers collaborate with biologists, physicians, data scientists and others to find solutions to some of the biggest health challenges of our time.

The five-story, 305,000-square-foot laboratory was the first new building to open in Carmenton , the university’s innovation district, in May 2023. Equipped with the cutting-edge technologies and resources critical for researchers working across disciplines to accelerate discoveries, the center will ultimately house over 100 labs and up to 1,000 faculty, staff and students.

The new center is named in recognition of Pelotonia, the annual cycling event that has raised more than $283 million for cancer research at Ohio State since 2008.

“The greatest advances these days aren't being led by a single principal investigator working alone in a specific area. The Pelotonia Research Center truly facilitates interdisciplinary biomedical research, which requires bringing together diverse experts in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, arts and sciences, and veterinary medicine,” said Seth Weinberg , associate dean for research in the College of Engineering. “I’m excited because I know new projects, new collaborations and more successful collaborations are going to come from the interactions enhanced by this building."

Twelve engineering faculty, including Weinberg, have dedicated labs in the building. Researchers work in neighborhoods focused on innovations in cancer, gene- and cell-based therapies, cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine, neurological disease, artificial intelligence and more.

“By design, every floor was set up to integrate both computational and experimental lab work, focused in particular research areas,” said Weinberg, a biomedical engineering professor who develops novel computational tools to better understand and treat cardiac arrhythmias, fibrosis and cancer. “That in itself—where the experimental and the computational researchers are housed in the same space—is unique.”

On the second floor, Center for Cancer Engineering-CURES Co-Director  Jonathan Song and his team develop new approaches and technologies to accelerate the translation of impactful cancer research from the lab bench to patients’ bedsides. A joint collaboration between the College of Engineering and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, it includes more than 60 researchers from seven of the university’s 15 colleges.

“The Center for Cancer Engineering-CURES puts together physical scientists, engineers and cancer researchers in an unprecedented setting for our institution where we get to collaborate, generate new ideas and focus on advancing cancer research,” said Song, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering whose research focuses on experimental platforms to better model cancer progression and discover cancer treatments.

Having experienced the benefits of learning in an interdisciplinary facility firsthand as a graduate student, Song is also excited about the building’s potential impact on the next generation of cancer researchers.

“It provides a very unique, enriching training environment for students and trainees,” Song explained. “Cultivating collaborations, and positioning our students and trainees to lead an exciting project at the interface between several groups is great training, no matter what career path our students pursue.”

The new facility could also boost researchers’ ability to secure large research grants.

“A major way these grants are evaluated is not only in terms of how great individual investigators are, but also their cohesion,” Song said. “Things like how well the group is working together, their history of working together and the prospects for growing their research together. The building is a nice vehicle to support that.”

One floor below, the innovative Medical Modeling, Materials and Manufacturing (M4) Lab advances technology to improve patient care.

A collaboration between the College of Engineering’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence and College of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the M4 Lab supports medical professionals and other faculty via biomedical engineering, medical device development and clinical 3D printing of patient-specific anatomic models.

“Some of the more impactful work we do in M4 leverages point-of-care manufacturing where clinicians within the hospital system, with engineering support, can provide solutions for patients that are otherwise left without options,” said M4 Division Director Megan Malara. “We can help our clinicians better visualize, plan and execute a surgery using computer-aided design, or CAD, and 3D printing of anatomical models.”

In the past two years, M4’s engineering and clinical experts have assisted with nearly 200 surgical cases. For their first project, the team used a CT scan to create a replica of a patient’s mandible to facilitate jaw reconstruction after removing a segment of bone.

The lab employs a dozen or so Ohio State students—mostly engineering majors—who complete months of training to learn the requisite skills.

“Other places across the country have 3D printing clinical workflows, but I think we're one of the only ones that integrate it with teaching undergraduate students,” Malara explained. “Hopefully this field continues to expand and we're training students that will then go work in a similar area.” 

Cross-pollination of people and ideas is one of the biggest benefits of the new facility for Biomedical Engineering Associate Professor Rengasayee (Sai) Veeraraghavan . He and his team study electrical signal propagation in the heart to develop new treatments for disease, and advance imaging techniques for use in cardiac, cancer and neuroscience research.

“A ton of my collaborators across all those fields are now in this building. The proximity makes a huge difference because now we can design some previously impossible experiments,” Veeraraghavan said. “There's also a lot more cross-pollination of our trainees. It has been very important for me from day one that my trainees have a very interdisciplinary training environment.”

Nine other College of Engineering faculty also have dedicated lab space in the Pelotonia Research Center:

  • Professor Daniel Conway   ( biomedical engineering) uses advanced microscopy to understand the biological drivers of cancer metastasis. 
  • Associate Professor Aleksander Skardal (biomedical engineering) works on experimental platforms to better model cancer progression and discover cancer drugs and interventions.
  • Professors Carlos Castro (mechanical and aerospace engineering),  Xiaoguang (Margaret) Liu and  Jessica Winter (chemical and biomolecular engineering) focus on the development and production of nanotherapeutics.
  • Assistant Professor Blaise Kimmel (chemical and biomolecular engineering) develops immunotherapies and medicines for cancer and rare diseases.
  • Professor Ragu Machiraju (computer science and engineering) uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve cancer detection and diagnosis.
  • Professor Daniel Gallego-Perez (biomedical engineering) develops novel micro- and nanoscale technologies for applications in regenerative medicine, cell and tissue reprogramming, drug and gene delivery, and cancer research. 
  • Associate Professor Natalia Higuita-Castro (biomedical engineering) develops micro- and nanofabrication techniques for applications in cell and tissue mechanics, inflammation and regenerative medicine.

Weinberg is eager to see how the Pelotonia Research Center impacts innovation.

“It's such a fantastic research space,” he said. “It enables interdisciplinary biomedical collaborations in a way that is challenging to have otherwise. Having so many researchers across different disciplines with broad expertise in the same space facilitates conversations to start new collaborations and then pours gasoline on the fire of the collaboration itself to accelerate it.”
