There's something in there for everyone.

  • The last section of the bio shows Ann’s warm personality — "Ann lives in Boston, where she is Mom to creatures two- and four-legged."
  • Written in the third person, this bio has lots of proof (like followers), which shows Ann is a terrific marketing leader.

If you're posting a bio on a social media account or sending a quick blurb to a client, you want to keep it short and sweet while showcasing your accomplishments.

To get started, use these best practices for writing your short professional bio:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • State what you do.
  • Add key skills or areas of expertise.

1. Introduce yourself.

Your introduction is your first impression, so always begin by telling people who you are. You may start with a greeting like, "Hello, my name is" or "Hi! Let me first introduce myself …" when sending your bio as a message.

If you’re writing a bio for an online platform, stating your name at the beginning works as well.

Leading with your name — even as a question — is important for recognition and building relationships.

2. State what you do.

Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.

So detail your most relevant work in your short bios, like CEO, professor, and author.

Take a cue from Angela Duckworth , who specifies what she does in her LinkedIn bio:

3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.

If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.

  • Mention a hobby. "I’ll be honest: for me, tennis is life — Go Nadal!"
  • A fun fact. "Every year, I watch 100 new films! I’m a cinephile and love every movie genre."
  • A few emojis related to your interests. "🎶🤖🎾🎬🎭"

Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.

When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.

Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.

What I love most about Tristen's bio is that it’s a great example of how to deliver information about yourself that is relevant to your work while also sharing fun details that audiences will find relatable.

Her bio reads:

"Building from her experience with GoCo.io and Southwest Airlines, Tristen's work has been recognized by Marketing Brew and BLACK@INBOUND. She lives in Washington, DC, attending anime conventions and painting in her free time."

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The bio is short and direct.
  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

01. Introduce yourself

Begin your bio by stating your first and last name. If you’re writing in the third person, these should be the first two words of the paragraph. Don’t be afraid if the name sounds simple or redundant. It’s perfectly fine, for instance, to say Mary Smith is the founder and CEO of Smith Digital.

Likewise, feel free to mention the name of another company or brand that you work for if you’d like to associate it with your professional accomplishments - e.g., Mary Smith is a consultant at Google and the founder and CEO of Smith Digital.

03. Explain your professional role

Next, briefly explain your current position. This is relevant whether you’re the founder of a company, a high-level specialist or a beginner in your field, and it can be similar to the description you have on your resume. Your website visitors won’t necessarily know what your job involves, so elaborating on your primary responsibilities helps paint a picture of who you are and what you have to offer. This can also be used, if needed for employment and recruitment opportunities. If you're a freelancer a strong bio can make all the difference in how successful sourcing work can be.

A good rule of thumb is to keep each element of your bio - from your job description to your mission statement and hobbies - to about 1-2 sentences. If you’re looking for a job and are writing primarily for recruiters, you’ll want to use a serious, professional tone. Really need to create a super short bio? We'd suggest following some of the tips above, just condensing them into less word for a short bio that still makes impact.

But if we really had to choose we'd say focus on - you, your professional role and company. That condenses everything that matters for bio into three sentences. Humor, creativity and uniqueness still all matter - just use fewer words to convey them.

Creating a bio for your website

As we’ve noted in the examples above, one of the most strategic places to put your bio is on your website - so be sure to consider it within your web design plans. Whether the goal of your site is to start and promote your business , showcase your design portfolio or display your resume, including a bio gives your audience a glimpse into the person behind your content. It can also kickstart your professional growth . Show the world what you do, how you do it and why it matters, and people will be drawn to your passion and inspired by your experience.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever said this:

“Writing copy for my website would be so much easier if I didn’t have to write about myself.”

I hear this ALL the time from my website design clients .

You’re not alone. Many creatives find it easier to talk about their clients than their own work. Sometimes we can be too close to our own work to know how to effectively communicate how much value we bring to our ideal clients.

This is especially true when you try to write a bio.

Your bio can be used in a few different ways. It is often found on your About page, but it can be repurposed for social media platforms, your blog, other pages on your website, and more.

Having a bio that explains who you are, what you do, and who you help is essential to your growth as an online business owner.

If you are struggling with how to write a bio for your website, I’ll show you every element you need to make it pop on your About page and give you a few real-life examples to kickstart your brainstorming process.

Writing a website bio can be easier than you think if you follow along these tips.

6 things to consider when you write a bio for your website

Before I cut you loose to write your own bio, it’s important to know which elements need to go into your bio. Otherwise, you run the risk of creating a bio that doesn’t tell your audience what they want to know, or tells them way too much.

So where do you start?

This is what I recommend doing.

Determine your voice

One of the first questions to ask yourself is if it makes sense for your bio to be written in first person or third person. What I mean by this is determining if you want your bio to read from the point-of-view of an “I” or “she/he.”

A first-person voice would say “I want to help clients achieve their dreams,” whereas third-person says “She wants to help clients achieve their dreams.”

You might want to write in first person if you are building a personal brand or want to come across as more friendly and approachable. This is a great fit for creatives who are solopreneurs or the main face of their brand.

Writing in third person means taking the perspective of an outsider. It reads like someone is talking about you rather than having you talk about yourself. It can appear more academic and professional, which may be a fit if your audience is attracted to a formal style of writing.

Once you’ve made this decision, you’ll want to think about if an “I” or “we” voice feels like the best fit. You could use “we” if you want your brand to appear larger or to come across as a unified team. There’s no right or wrong way to do this!

To make your decision easier, here’s is an example written in the three styles I reviewed above:

  • First Person (“I” Voice) : Hi, my name is Sarah Blodgett, and I’m passionate about helping clients turn their dream vision into a fully functional and beautiful Showit website .
  • Third Person (“She/He” Voice) : Sarah Blodgett is a Showit website designer who is passionate about helping clients turn their big vision into a reality.

Choose a title and determine who you want to serve

One of the first things someone will see in your professional bio is your title. This can be anything that describes what you do and what you help clients with. 

Try to keep this title simple so it’s easy to understand. You might be tempted to use a title like “chief wordsmith” or “brand magician” for a fun flair, but it’s better to be clear than clever with your title. In this example, using “editor-in-chief” or “brand designer” would be ideal. 

After you have a title picked out, you’ll want to determine who your ideal audience is . It’s so much easier to write your bio when you know who you want to serve. Then, you can pair your ideal audience with your title to explain exactly what you do.

Here are a few examples to help you brainstorm:

  • Event planner for destination weddings in Italy
  • Hand-drawn illustrator for SaaS companies
  • Avante garde makeup artist for fashion brands

Highlight your accomplishments

No matter where you are in your career, you have accomplishments to highlight in your bio.

Whether it’s a certain amount of years you’ve been in business, notable clients you’ve been able to work with, or how many clients you’ve partnered with, you can include this information in your website bio.

If you don’t have the numbers yet, don’t worry. You can still add things you’ve accomplished that you are proud of. This could look like a specific project that generated great results or a specific business goal you achieved.

Have you won an award that will wow your audience? This is the perfect detail to add to your bio. You don’t need it to be in the first sentence, but find a way to work it into your bio. 

For example, when I won the 2019 Showit Designer of the Year award, I knew I wanted to include it in my bio but I didn’t want to begin with it. That way, it felt like a natural progression to my story as a website designer rather than coming off as potentially “braggy.”  You can do the same with your award.

When possible, try to mention accomplishments that are relevant to your field. It’s really cool if you were named Best Smile or Most Likely to Succeed in high school, but ask yourself how this information is useful to your audience. Awards are best when they are specialized to your industry and what you do for a living.

Don’t forget your core values

Remember when I mentioned how important it is to mention who you like to work with? In order to make a better connection with them, you’ll want to use the last part of your bio to explain your core values. This can also include your beliefs as a business owner.

Consider your core values to be the guiding principles of your business, the qualities and attributes anchoring the work you do every day.

Let’s say, for example, your core values are service, vision, and excellence. With these in mind, you could create a sentence that speaks to the core values you and your audience share within your bio.

Here’s a few samples on how to do this for different industries:

  • For a wedding florist who values excellence: “Our minimal yet stunning designs are handcrafted with care using the highest quality florals in our local market.”
  • For a yoga instructor who values service: “Our yoga studio caters to growing families, providing daycare for young children while parents refocus on themselves with mindful meditation and yoga practices.”
  • For an interior designer who values vision: “My design philosophy starts with enhancing the features already found in your home, helping us uncover its story as we create a vision of our own.”

There are many ways you can work your core values into your bio, so get creative with this part. Just make sure the “why” behind your work is just as apparent as the “what” and “how.”

Give an inside look into who you are outside of work

Everything up to this point has been focused on your professional background, so now it’s time to infuse more of your personality into your bio. This is the perfect opportunity for you to share what you like to do for fun.

This can either look like a:

  • List of your favorite things (like this example from my client Cari Long Photography )
  • Timeline (like this example from my client Glossible )
  • Fun quiz (like this example from Jenna Kutcher )
  • List of fun facts (like this example from Vero Amore Weddings )

You can get creative with this section!

Include any other necessary details

Since your bio’s main goal is to tell your audience a little bit more about you and your brand, you’ll be able to tell if it needs any more information. 

This framework gives you a great start, but feel free to include any additional facts and stories that will make it stand out. Have fun with it!

  • Core values : Their bio is written with the “we” voice because they are family-owned and thus, it is run by a team of family members who care about their clients’ weddings because they see them as family gatherings.

What I love about Refine’s bio:

  • Personal story : Even though Refine was passed down to Amber from its original founder, Amber relates her story to other wedding planners who are just like her in this bio. This sentence says it all: “I believe in Refine because I’m the product of Refine.”
  • Specific transformations : Amber from Refine doesn’t shy away from stating the specifics in her bio, like how she went from drowning with 30 weddings a year to tripling her prices so she could take on only 6 weddings each year.

What I love about Corry Frazier Photography’s bio:

  • Thought-provoking question : Instead of jumping right into her bio, Corry starts with a self-reflective question that speaks to her audience’s main pain point (not knowing where they belong) and giving them an opportunity to take action (creating the feeling of belonging for themselves and others) in her title.
  • Welcoming brand voice : As someone reads through Corry’s bio, they will either be immediately attracted to her fun and friendly voice or look elsewhere. This is a good thing!
  • Relatable background : While not everyone who comes to Corry’s website will know what it’s like to be a military spouse, she relates her experience to others who may have experienced other hardships in their career through no fault of their own. This is a great way for Corry to connect with them on a deeper level.

How to Write a Great Bio for a Website

I recently discussed “About” page copywriting . Website bios are a big part of robust About pages. Often, brands will include bios for key people on the management team, and someone needs to pen those narratives, right? That brings us to the subject of this blog post: How to write a great bio for a website.

You can apply the advice I share below to other “types” of bios for other applications, like LinkedIn or conference speaker bios.

What is a bio anyway?

A bio, which is short for “biography,” is just that—it’s a short narrative about a person. “Short” is relative here. Some bios might only be a paragraph or two. Others might be as long as a full page. I rarely see bios that go longer than a page.

A good bio tells a good story. But it doesn’t include every last detail of a person’s life.

Your job is to capture relevant highlights about the person’s life while giving us a sense of who the person is. That last bit isn’t always easy to capture—a person’s essence. And the truth is, not all bios require that. Some bios are very much “just the facts, ma’am.”

It all depends on who the bio is for and how it’s being used.

Why do people need website bios?

Have you ever been on a website and it’s just . . . sparse? And you’re wondering if it’s legit? You go poking around to see if you can find any info on people in the company, and you come up empty. How’d that make you feel? Probably not all that inclined to buy from the business, right?

Website bios lend credibility. Look! There are real people behind this business! Plus, many consumers like to know who they’re doing business with. They’re interested in learning more about the people behind the brand. (This can be true for b2c or b2b companies.)

Website bios and pics can also make it easier for customers and prospects to connect with the person they’re doing business with, like a sales rep or an account manager.

And bios offer an opportunity to glean whether the person has the credentials you’re looking for.

How to write a great bio for a website: What should you include? 

What you include in a website bio is up to the business, the person being written about, and even the writer (if the writer is directing the bios for the entire team).

Usually, website bios include relevant education and credentials, relevant employment, details about the current position, and—ideally—some personal info. “Robyn lives in a suburb of Boston with her faithful plush sloth, Stewart.”

I always encourage clients to have fun with their bios.

  • I often use “lightning round” questions after the main bio where I ask some fun questions. The person’s answers help bring their bio page to life. Here’s an example of a website bio I did that uses this approach .
  • I encourage clients to include candid photos in addition to professional headshots. Again, this helps bring more personality to the website bios. Here’s an example of a website bio I did that uses this approach .

Should website bios be written in first or third person?

Like so many things in life, it depends. I’ve written them both ways. It will depend on the business, the people, and the goals.

For the urology practice I write for, I draft the doctors’ website bios in the third person. For this morning radio show consultant , I wrote the bio in the first person. For this mortgage broker , I did a combination of first for the opening of the “About Me” page before transitioning into a bio written in the third person. (And I cheekily made reference to the switch from first person to third.) For my LinkedIn bio , I wrote it in first person—and as you might expect, it’s not the “typical” bio.

I would say this: I think consistency is key. So if you’re writing website bios for 10 people on the same team, it makes sense to choose either first or third person.

Another caveat: If the person has a lot of credentials, awards, etc., it will come across much less braggy if the bio is written in third person.

Is it OK to write your own bio?

People are often very protective of their personal bios, which makes sense. If someone wants to take a stab at writing their bio—or maybe they had a bio at another company and they update it for the new one—I’m OK with this. I’ll always review and fine-tune to make sure the bio is consistent with others in the company.

Some folks, however, hate writing about themselves. Or they’re modest and don’t know how to write about themselves.

And that’s where copywriters come in.

How to write a great bio for a website: Tips for getting the info you need

This is often where the heavy lifting comes into play.

You can . . .

  • Put together a bio “input” form. I do this for one of my clients that’s always adding new people to the team.
  • Conduct interviews via phone/Zoom. Make sure you record.
  • Use a person’s CV/resume. For basic “just the facts, ma’am” bios, this usually provides enough info.

Make sure you have a go-to set of questions that you use as your building block for all bio-input forms. You can customize them for the business and/or person in question.

How to write a great bio for a website: Use these professional bio interview questions to get started.

Here’s the bio-input form I use with one of my clients. (I’ve removed any identifying info.) Feel free to copy and paste and customize it for your bio-writing needs.

I email these instructions and questions to the person I’m writing about.

What I Need from You: Please provide three short paragraphs about yourself and your work experience. Use the existing bios on our site as a guide. I’ll lightly edit what you send me, as needed, but you’ll get final approval.

If writing isn’t your thing, please thoroughly answer all questions below and I’ll draft a bio for you. (You will get final approval.)

  • Please share your name and title as you’d like to see it appear on the site.
  • Where are you based?
  • Tell me about your role with AWESOME COMPANY—what will you be doing day-to-day, week-to-week?
  • What do you love most about your job with AWESOME COMPANY?
  • Please provide a brief paragraph on your experience: work experience and relevant education. Definitely highlight any relevant experience as it relates to AWESOME COMPANY.
  • You’re at a cocktail party and someone asks you what you do for a living. What do you say?
  • When you’re not working, what do you like to do?
  • What’s something you wish everyone understood about your job, and why AWESOME COMPANY is different/better than its competitors?
  • Please include a link to your LinkedIn profile (and make sure your profile is up to date and has a picture).
  • Anything else you want to make sure I include?

PHOTOGRAPHS:

  • One headshot – you can take it with your phone. Just make sure the lighting is good, the background is plain/solid, and that you shoot from the shoulders (or so) on up. See the website for examples.
  • Three candid shots, at least one of which should be a “you” shot. The other two can also feature you (family photo, childhood photo, you jumping out of a plane), and/or pets, a prized possession (car, boat, piece of art), you get the idea. Something that captures the essence of who you are. Again, see the existing bios on the site for inspiration.

People know big brands. They see the ads, they hear the message, and they trust the reputation. When it comes time to buy from a big brand, they know whom they are dealing with, and rarely will they look for the CEO’s bio. They may look at your website biography though if you are a small business. Do you know how to write your website biography to inspire others to stay on your site?

You are not a big brand. They don’t know you. They don’t trust you. They don’t know if they want to do business with you. That’s why you need your biography on your website.

When it comes to small business, it’s not about the company – it’s about the person behind the company.

Before you start writing, remember that this is not a resume; it is part of your marketing. It is worth taking the time to plan it out. Here are seven steps to creating a website bio that sells.

How to Write Your Website Biography -Decide How Much Detail to Include

Your website bio doesn’t have to be very long, but you might want it to be. My bio page is quite long, and that is for two very good reasons:

  • It is a reflection of who I am and how I do business. I love to work with people one-on-one, and getting to know each other is a huge part of that.
  • My “product” is me. It’s my knowledge, my attitude, my experience, and my approach to life and business. Potential clients want to get a sense of who I am, more so than if I was selling gardening tools, for example.

Here is a really good rule of thumb: the higher the price of what you are selling, the more customers will be interested in reading about you. And here’s another great rule of thumb: the more intricately linked you are to what you are selling, the more they will want to get to know you before connecting with you.

As a general rule, people want to know more about you if you are selling a service than if you are selling a product.

Know Your Business

Not everything you’ve ever done is relevant to your business. Start by identifying what is most relevant –  anything related to the topic of your business.  That might include hobbies and it might include all or some of your previous careers.

It might also include anything that helps people understand your values, your attention to detail, your commitment to quality, or any other trait that is important for your business relationship.

Know Your Audience

I know, I know. Your audience is all your clients. But some might be more important than others. You might tell your story one way if you run a tattoo parlor that caters primarily to the under-30 set. And you might tell your story very differently if you are selling landscaping to businesses.

I was recently told a story about an elite security company founder in California. Biography writer David Leonhardt asked this security client who his most important audience was.

“His clients and potential clients were not even top of mind. His most important audience at that early stage of his company was investors and partners,” David told me. The founder needed them to build his business capacity. After that came, job seekers. He needed to attract top security talent to offer elite security services. Clients and potential clients came third. Here is what David did, in his own words.

“I created a section that established this founder as one of the top experts in security in the USA. You read these paragraphs, and – Wow! That appealed to all three audiences.

“Then, I built on that by focusing the next section on how he led his trusting team safely into and back from dangerous military missions. This was clearly a leader that any new hire would follow into battle, if necessary. And it showed investors that he could handle the risks inherent in this business.

“Finally, I added a section on the founder’s sense of business. Only one of his audiences would read all the way to that section. And by ‘section’, I mean there were three sub-headings that made the pitches.”

Know Your Market

If you sell typesetting, there are hundreds of people just like you around the world who can do the job. What makes you so special?

Even in many local niches, you are not alone. There is a real estate agent hanging out on almost every corner in your town. What makes you so special?

This is important because a buyer might not be making a binary decision, such as “Do I trust this person with my business, yes or no?” They might be making a more complex decision, such as “Is this the best person to hire, or should I keep looking for someone else?”

It is important to find something – preferably more than one thing – that makes you more qualified than others in your niche. It might be a stretch, such as a landscaper mentioning how she began mowing lawns at six years of age and never looked back. But stretching is better than nothing.

If you are the only game in town (or close to it) this becomes less important. Nobody else empties septic tanks for miles around? Your run one of only three pest control services in the city? You might not have to be as creative…but, then again, why not?

Tell a story in Your Website Biography

Back to my comment earlier about this not being a resume. Nobody likes reading a resume unless they are having a hard time falling asleep at night. Resumes are right up there with dictionaries and telephone directories (remember them?) in entertainment value.

People love to read a story.

Tell your story. That’s what I did. If you can use devices of fiction, such as foreshadowing and building suspense, even better. Just make sure to focus the story on your professional exploits, rather than on family or unrelated hobbies.

How to Write Your Website Biography by Stating Your Credentials

Just because you are telling a story, doesn’t mean you should forget about your credentials: certifications, awards, etc. Ideally, fit them into the story. But if that doesn’t work, find another way to get them on that page.

On my page, you will see a number of those listed under “More About Me”. They are important to mention, but not important enough to interrupt the story I am telling. I follow those up with testimonials for a well-rounded pitch on why you should work with me.

Get Personal in Your Website Biography

I have a big caveat to offer, just to make sure I did not miss communicate above when I wrote: “…focus the story on your professional exploits, rather than on family or unrelated hobbies.”

You should give people some glimpse into you, the person. If it is relevant to the niche, that’s great. But even if it’s not, people want to see your human side.

Mention family, but don’t focus on it. Mention other interests, but don’t focus on them.

We’ve all been there: agonizing over how to write a bio that doesn’t sound too self-promotional or fall flat with modesty.

“What is a biography?” you may ask. A bio is a piece of work that details a person’s life. In addition to basic facts, like education and employment, it is meant to portray their lived experiences as well. 

Writing a biography that’s professional and actually  sparks interest  can be tricky. And optimizing it for greater visibility in search engines can make your job even harder.

In many cases, your personal biography will define your first impression online when you’re Googled by:

  • A potential employer or client before an interview.
  • Someone at a networking event who wants to learn more about you.
  • A potential client or customer looking to get more info before working with you.

And when someone finds your social media profiles, personal website, or company bio page, your bio will be there to greet them.

It can make or break whether someone wants to take the next step and work with you.

So it’s important to make it count.

1. How to write a bio about yourself that checks all the boxes.

When it comes to writing a personal or professional bio, there are a few items that are standard to include. While a bio may not have all of these things, if any of the following apply to you, then they should be included. Use the following bullet points to write out a list of information about you. From there, you can draw info from each line item to start crafting your bio.

  • Your current role
  • Hometown/Current place of residence
  • Work experience
  • Education history
  • Special skills & attributes
  • Professional accomplishments
  • Personal accomplishments
  • High-level personal goals & aspirations
  • High-level professional accomplishments
  • Hobbies & pastimes
  • Personal passions
  • Awards or Accolades
  • Press Mentions
  • Miscellaneous (What makes you unique!)

Starting with a list ensures you won’t leave anything out.

First create a list of info for your bio

2. Introduce yourself… like a real person.

This is one of the most important pieces of understanding how to write a personal biography. Always start with your name.

When many people start learning how to write a bio, they skip this important part. People need to know who you are before they learn what you do. Remember that your most important details should go in the very first sentence.

Keep the first sentence short and sweet, either by describing what you do at a high level or going into more detail about your specific role. Aim to describe yourself in a way that’s professional…but also human.

3. Watch your word count.

When you start writing a bio about yourself, determining the length may seem like an afterthought – something that just happens once you stop typing. However, it is something that you need to think about before you start writing – and your ideal word count may shift depending on your primary focus.

From an SEO perspective, the more words you use in your personal bio, the better. If you are filling in the bio section of a profile, find out the word or character limit – that’s how long your bio should be. If you are writing the bio on your personal website, the longer, the better. Plan to write 500 words – minimum. If you have 1,500 to 2,000 words in you, that’s even better.

One way I was able to create my own personal brand was by using a new website called personavita.com. it was really helpful in bringing all my thoughts ideas and accomplishments together. It builds credibility and others can validate my work. You can also create different Bios based on who you are showing it to. ( Future/existing employers, family, friends etc.) I think it really sets me apart.

For me, the key to this article is section 6. Anymore, I DON’T think the expectation is a list of your accomplishments. I think the people who make the decisions based on biographies are looking for something different, a way to truly distinguish one person from another. A list says one thing about a person–a STORY says something much different. It SHOWS you are creative. A story gives you a lot of flexibility and opportunity to qualify yourself; a list is often reduced to a quantity. Dylan makes an excellent point about ‘sources’ or achievement; in a technician’s role, resolution can be rote, but my experience is solving problems presents lots of opportunities to get creative. David also makes an outstanding point: even if you truly don’t have anything that qualifies as an accomplishment, in this day and age, there are numerous ways to create demonstrable achievement. I believe that’s what the Gig Economy is all about. Dave mentions two specifics; there are dozens more opportunities. This could be an important consideration if you have been stuck for a while in a job that TRULY sucks. I’ve been in those. Then, the story REALLY comes in handy–’cause you don’t have to dwell exclusively on work related stuff. Never hurts to show people you are compassionate, or generous, or kind.

How to Write a Biography: A 7-Step Guide [+Template]

From time to time, nonfiction authors become so captivated by a particular figure from either the present or the past, that they feel compelled to write an entire book about their life. Whether casting them as heroes or villains, there is an interesting quality in their humanity that compels these authors to revisit their life paths and write their story.

However, portraying someone’s life on paper in a comprehensive and engaging way requires solid preparation. If you’re looking to write a biography yourself, in this post we’ll share a step-by-step blueprint that you can follow. 

How to write a biography:

2. research your subject thoroughly, 3. do interviews and visit locations, 4. organize your findings, 5. identify a central thesis, 6. write it using narrative elements, 7. get feedback and polish the text.

While you technically don’t need permission to write about public figures (or deceased ones), that doesn't guarantee their legal team won't pursue legal action against you. Once you’ve settled (or not) the permission part, it’s time to dive deep into your character’s story.  

Deep and thorough research skills are the cornerstone of every biographer worth their salt. To paint a vivid and accurate portrait of someone's life, you’ll have to gather qualitative information from a wide range of reliable sources. 

Start with the information already available, from books on your subject to archival documents, then collect new ones firsthand by interviewing people or traveling to locations.

Put your researcher hat on and start consuming any piece on your subject you can find, from their Wikipedia page to news articles, interviews, TV and radio appearances, YouTube videos, podcasts, books, magazines, and any other media outlets they may have been featured in. 

Establish a system to orderly collect the information you find 一 even seemingly insignificant details can prove valuable during the writing process, so be sure to save them. 

Depending on their era, you may find most of the information readily available online, or you may need to search through university libraries for older references.

Try to understand their time and social environment

Many biographies show how their protagonists have had a profound impact on society through their philosophical, artistic, or scientific contributions. But at the same time, it’s worth it as a biographer to make an effort to understand how their societal and historical context influenced their life’s path and work.

An interesting example is Stephen Greenblatt’s Will in the World . Finding himself limited by a lack of verified detail surrounding William Shakespeare's personal life, Greenblatt, instead, employs literary interpretation and imaginative reenactments to transport readers back to the Elizabethan era. The result is a vivid (though speculative) depiction of the playwright's life, enriching our understanding of his world.

Many readers enjoy biographies that transport them to a time and place, so exploring a historical period through the lens of a character can be entertaining in its own right. The Diary of Samuel Pepys became a classic not because people were enthralled by his life as an administrator, but rather from his meticulous and vivid documentation of everyday existence during the Restoration period.

Once you’ve gotten your hands on as many secondary sources as you can find, you’ll want to go hunting for stories first-hand from people who are (or were) close to your subject.

With all the material you’ve been through, by now you should already have a pretty good picture of your protagonist. But you’ll surely have some curiosities and missing dots in their character arc to figure out, which you can only get by interviewing primary sources.

Interview friends and associates

This part is more relevant if your subject is contemporary, and you can actually meet up or call with relatives, friends, colleagues, business partners, neighbors, or any other person related to them. 

In writing the popular biography of Steve Jobs, Walter Isaacson interviewed more than one hundred people, including Jobs’s family, colleagues, former college mates, business rivals, and the man himself.

When you conduct your interviews, make sure to record them with high quality audio you can revisit later. Then use tools like Otter.ai or Descript to transcribe them 一 it’ll save you countless hours. 

You can approach the interview with a specific set of questions, or follow your curiosity blindly, trying to uncover revealing stories and anecdotes about your subject. Whatever your method, author and biography editor Tom Bromley suggests that every interviewer arrives prepared, "Show that you’ve done your work. This will help to put the interviewee at ease, and get their best answers.” 

Bromley also places emphasis on the order in which you conduct interviews. “You may want to interview different members of the family or friends first, to get their perspective on something, and then go directly to the main interviewee. You'll be able to use that knowledge to ask sharper, more specific questions.” 

Finally, consider how much time you have with each interviewee. If you only have a 30-minute phone call with an important person, make it count by asking directly the most pressing questions you have. And, if you find a reliable source who is also particularly willing to help, conduct several interviews and ask them, if appropriate, to write a foreword as part of the book’s front matter .

Sometimes an important part of the process is packing your bags, getting on a plane, and personally visiting significant places in your character’s journey.

Visit significant places in their life

A place, whether that’s a city, a rural house, or a bodhi tree, can carry a particular energy that you can only truly experience by being there. In putting the pieces together about someone’s life, it may be useful to go visit where they grew up, or where other significant events of their lives happened. It will be easier to imagine what they experienced, and better tell their story. 

In researching The Lost City of Z , author David Grann embarked on a trek through the Amazon, retracing the steps of British explorer Percy Fawcett. This led Grann to develop new theories about the circumstances surrounding the explorer's disappearance.

Hopefully, you won’t have to deal with jaguars and anacondas to better understand your subject’s environment, but try to walk into their shoes as much as possible. 

Once you’ve researched your character enough, it’s time to put together all the puzzle pieces you collected so far. 

Take the bulk of notes, media, and other documents you’ve collected, and start to give them some order and structure. A simple way to do this is by creating a timeline. 

Create a chronological timeline

It helps to organize your notes chronologically 一 from childhood to the senior years, line up the most significant events of your subject’s life, including dates, places, names and other relevant bits.

You should be able to divide their life into distinct periods, each with their unique events and significance. Based on that, you can start drafting an outline of the narrative you want to create.  

Draft a story outline 

Since a biography entails writing about a person’s entire life, it will have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You can pick where you want to end the story, depending on how consequential the last years of your subject were. But the nature of the work will give you a starting character arc to work with. 

To outline the story then, you could turn to the popular Three-Act Structure , which divides the narrative in three main parts. In a nutshell, you’ll want to make sure to have the following:

  • Act 1. Setup : Introduce the protagonist's background and the turning points that set them on a path to achieve a goal. 
  • Act 2. Confrontation : Describe the challenges they encounter, both internal and external, and how they rise to them. Then..
  • Act 3. Resolution : Reach a climactic point in their story in which they succeed (or fail), showing how they (and the world around them) have changed as a result. 

Only one question remains before you begin writing: what will be the main focus of your biography?

Think about why you’re so drawn to your subject to dedicate years of your life to recounting their own. What aspect of their life do you want to highlight? Is it their evil nature, artistic genius, or visionary mindset? And what evidence have you got to back that up? Find a central thesis or focus to weave as the main thread throughout your narrative.

Or find a unique angle

If you don’t have a particular theme to explore, finding a distinct angle on your subject’s story can also help you distinguish your work from other biographies or existing works on the same subject.

Plenty of biographies have been published about The Beatles 一 many of which have different focuses and approaches: 

  • Philip Norman's Shout is sometimes regarded as leaning more towards a pro-Lennon and anti-McCartney stance, offering insights into the band's inner dynamics. 
  • Ian McDonald's Revolution in the Head closely examines their music track by track, shifting the focus back to McCartney as a primary creative force. 
  • Craig Brown's One Two Three Four aims to capture their story through anecdotes, fan letters, diary entries, and interviews. 
  • Mark Lewisohn's monumental three-volume biography, Tune In , stands as a testament to over a decade of meticulous research, chronicling every intricate detail of the Beatles' journey.

Finally, consider that biographies are often more than recounting the life of a person. Similar to how Dickens’ Great Expectations is not solely about a boy named Pip (but an examination and critique of Britain’s fickle, unforgiving class system), a biography should strive to illuminate a broader truth — be it social, political, or human — beyond the immediate subject of the book. 

Once you’ve identified your main focus or angle, it’s time to write a great story.

While biographies are often highly informative, they do not have to be dry and purely expository in nature . You can play with storytelling elements to make it an engaging read. 

You could do that by thoroughly detailing the setting of the story , depicting the people involved in the story as fully-fledged characters , or using rising action and building to a climax when describing a particularly significant milestone of the subject’s life.

Hook the reader from the start

Just because you're honoring your character's whole life doesn't mean you have to begin when they said their first word. Starting from the middle or end of their life can be more captivating as it introduces conflicts and stakes that shaped their journey.

When he wrote about Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild , author Jon Krakauer didn’t open his subject’s childhood and abusive family environment. Instead, the book begins with McCandless hitchhiking his way into the wilderness, and subsequently being discovered dead in an abandoned bus. By starting in medias res , Krakauer hooks the reader’s interest, before tracing back the causes and motivations that led McCandless to die alone in that bus in the first place.

You can bend the timeline to improve the reader’s reading experience throughout the rest of the story too…

Play with flashback 

While biographies tend to follow a chronological narrative, you can use flashbacks to tell brief stories or anecdotes when appropriate. For example, if you were telling the story of footballer Lionel Messi, before the climax of winning the World Cup with Argentina, you could recall when he was just 13 years old, giving an interview to a local newspaper, expressing his lifelong dream of playing for the national team.

Recreating conversations that your subject had with people around them is another effective way to color the story. Dialogue helps the reader imagine the story like a movie, providing a deeper sensory experience.

Mets reportedly sign veteran MLB starter as rainouts create quirky April schedule

The New York Mets have signed veteran starting pitcher Julio Teheran , reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post . Teheran signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles on Feb. 28, but opted out of that deal late in spring training to become a free agent. He'll make $2.5 million with up to $450,000 in bonuses, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo .

Starting with a doubleheader on Thursday -- thanks to a postponement on Wednesday -- the Mets will have 15 games in the next 14 days. Between that tough schedule and Kodai Senga , Tylor Megill and David Peterson being on the injured list, the Mets' need for starting pitching here in the next few weeks is pretty glaring. 

Teheran, 33, was 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings last season for the Brewers . He is a two-time All-Star, as he made the team for the Braves in both 2014 and 2016. He was last successful in a full-time starting role with Atlanta in 2019 and has dealt with shoulder injuries, COVID and inconsistency since. 

Teheran did have some bright moments last season for the Brewers. Through his first six starts, he had a 1.53 ERA in 35 1/3 innings. He allowed only one run on three hits to the mighty Braves on July 23. 

Also of possible note: Teheran has had good success in the Mets' home park through his career. In 15 career Citi Field starts, he's 6-4 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. 

The Mets have started this season 0-4. They play two against the Tigers on Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Reds in Cincinnati on Friday.

IR-2024-88, April 2, 2024

WASHINGTON — With the April 15 tax deadline approaching, the IRS reminds taxpayers there is still time file their federal income tax return electronically and request direct deposit.

Filing electronically reduces tax return errors as tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information. Most people qualify for electronic filing at no cost and, when they choose direct deposit, receive their refund within 21 days.

Free electronic filing options

Taxpayers with income of $79,000 or less in 2023 can use IRS Free File guided tax software now through Oct 15. IRS Free Fillable forms , a part of this program, is available at no cost to taxpayers of any income level and provides electronic forms for people to fill out and e-file themselves.

IRS Direct File is now open to all eligible taxpayers in 12 pilot states to decide if it is the right option for them to file their 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS. Go to the Direct File website for more information about Direct File pilot eligibility and the 12 participating states.

Through a network of community partnerships, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax return preparation to eligible people in the community by IRS certified volunteers.

MilTax , a Department of Defense program, generally offers free return preparation and electronic filing software for federal income tax returns and up to three state income tax returns for all military members, and some veterans, with no income limit.

Use Where's My Refund? to check refund status

The Where's My Refund? tool will normally show a refund status within 24 hours after e-filing a 2023 tax return, three to four days after e-filing a 2021 or 2022 return and four weeks after filing a tax return by mail. To use the tool, taxpayers need their Social Security number, filing status and exact refund amount. Taxpayers can also check Where's My Refund? by downloading our free mobile app, IRS2Go , from an iPhone or Android device. The tool updates once a day, so people don't need to check more often.

Taxpayers that owe on their tax return

IRS reminds people they can avoid paying interest and some penalties by filing their tax return and, if they have a balance due, paying the total amount due by the tax deadline of Monday, April 15. For residents of Maine or Massachusetts, the tax deadline is Wednesday, April 17, due to Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day holidays.

Payment options for individuals to pay in full

The IRS offers various options for taxpayers who are making tax payments :

  • Direct Pay – Make a payment directly from a checking or savings account without any fees or registration.
  • Pay with debit card, credit card or digital wallet – Make a payment directly from a debit card, credit card or digital wallet. Processing fees are paid to the payment processors. The IRS doesn’t receive any fees for these payments. Authorized card processors and phone numbers are available at IRS.gov/payments . 
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) – This free service gives taxpayers a safe, convenient way to pay individual and business taxes by phone or online. To enroll and for more information, taxpayers can call 800-555-4477 or visit eftps.gov .
  • Electronic funds withdrawal – Taxpayers can file and pay electronically from their bank account when using tax preparation software or a tax professional. This option is free and only available when electronically filing a tax return.
  • Check or money order  – Payments made by check or money order should be made payable to the “United States Treasury.”
  • Cash  – Make a cash payment through a retail partner and other methods. The IRS urges taxpayers choosing this option to start early because it involves a four-step process. Details, including answers to frequently asked questions, are at IRS.gov/paywithcash .

Payment options for individuals unable to pay their taxes in full

Taxpayers that are unable to pay in full by the tax deadline, should pay what they can now and apply for an online payment plan . They can receive an immediate response of payment plan acceptance or denial without calling or writing to the IRS. Online payment plan options include:

  • Short-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Additional time of up to 180 days to pay the balance in full.
  • Long-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $50,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Pay in monthly payments for up to 72 months. Payments may be set up using direct debit (automatic bank withdraw) which eliminates the need to send in a payment each month, saving postage costs and reducing the chance of default. For balances between $25,000 and $50,000, direct debit is required.

Though interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on any unpaid taxes after April 15, the failure to pay penalty is cut in half while an installment agreement is in effect. Unable to file by the April 15 deadline?

Individuals unable to file their tax return by the tax deadline can apply for a tax-filing extension in the following ways:

  • Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension through IRS Free File by filing a Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return PDF .
  • Make an electronic payment using Direct Pay, debit card, credit card or digital wallet and indicate the payment is for an extension.
  • Mail Form 4868 by the tax deadline.

Things people should know when requesting a tax-filing extension:

  • Tax-filing extension requests are due by the tax deadline date, and it does not give an extension of time to pay the taxes.
  • Avoid some penalties by estimating and paying the tax due by the tax deadline.
  • Special rules for tax deadlines and automatic tax-filing extensions may apply for taxpayers serving in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty areas , living outside the United States , and people living in certain disaster areas . They may not need to submit a tax-filing extension; however, people should check to see if they qualify before the tax deadline.

Boston — Today, the Executive Office for Administration and Finance announced the reopening of four Tradespersons Statewide Contracts with the goal of providing greater opportunity to diverse and small businesses and expanding options for state agencies and cities and towns.

The Operational Services Division (OSD), the State Purchasing Agent, and the Supplier Diversity Office (SDO) are working together to uphold the Administration’s commitment to equity by creating opportunities for local businesses to sell their goods and services to the state and its municipalities.

“Reopening contracts for people in the trades creates a path for diverse and small businesses to compete for the state's business. We look forward to sharing additional contracting opportunities over the next fiscal year,” said Governor Maura Healey.

“We know how small, local businesses strengthen our communities and we, as an administration, are invested in their success,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “This step will open the door for opportunities to work with the state and expand our network of businesses.” 

The Operational Services Division last week posted Notices of Intent to reopen the Tradespersons Statewide Contracts in the Commonwealth’s procurement platform, COMMBUYS. The Commonwealth offers 29 Trades service categories across four Tradespersons Contracts. TRD01 and TRD03 will reopen in May 2024, and TRD02 and TRD04 will reopen in late summer/ early fall 2024.

The specific trades involved in the first round of bidding include: Boilers; Drains; Electrical; Fencing; General Contracting; Generator/Turbine; Glass/Window/Doors; HVAC/Sheet Metal; Painting; Plumbing, Solar Array Inspection; Elevator; Exhaust Services; Fire Detection; Fire Suppression; Overhead Doors; Signage; and Welding.

“We are proud to be able to take this step and create meaningful opportunity to contract with the state for many small and diverse-owned businesses that previously may not have been able to see their way into this work,” said Secretary of Administration and Finance Matthew J. Gorzkowicz. “I look forward to working with our partners inside and outside of state government, as well as with the new Diverse and Small Business Advisory Board to find additional opportunities to grow our networks.”

“OSD looks forward to expanding the vendor pools for our Tradespersons Statewide Contracts. The reopening of these contracts will bolster our coverage across the state and provide opportunities for trades businesses to work with the state and local governments,” said Gary Lambert, assistant secretary for Operational Services.

OSD serves both business and government customers through a variety of services and programs that include managing the state fleet of vehicles and the COMMBUYS Procurement platform, setting the tuition prices for approved Private Special Education Programs, and management and oversight of procurements for goods and services. Through the direct management of more than 100 statewide contracts, OSD oversaw $2.17 billion in state purchasing in Fiscal Year 2023.

Governor Healey originally announced the state’s intent to reopen Statewide Contracts during her remarks at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Breakfast held in January. At the event, Governor Healey said Statewide Contracts would be reopened to broaden diverse and small businesses’ access to state contracting opportunities. The reopening of the Tradespersons Statewide Contracts represents the second category of Statewide Contracts reopened by the OSD this year: in January, a climate-focused Professional Services Statewide Contract was reopened and OSD is currently evaluating bid responses. 

The SDO promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in state contracting for businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans, service-disabled veterans, those with a disability, and LGBT individuals, as well as small Massachusetts businesses. The SDO certifies these businesses and manages several programs that help them enhance their marketability. Together, OSD and SDO will be conducting regular reviews of Statewide Contracts to find more opportunities to include new diverse businesses.

“Skilled and qualified tradespersons are in great demand by government entities across the Commonwealth. The Supplier Diversity Office encourages all interested certified, diverse, and registered small businesses to consider bidding on these contracting opportunities,” said Bill McAvoy, Executive Director of the Supplier Diversity Office.
