Recipe for Research (from EbscoHost) A 9-Step Process for Acquiring and Organizing Information for Your Research Assignment

Before you start

1. WRITE A TOPIC OVERVIEW

What do you already know about your topic? Write it down. All of it. This will give you a place to begin and an idea of how much work is ahead of you.

2. DEFINE YOUR TASK(S)  

What are the requirements of the project? In other words, what are the necessary ingredients for you to achieve success? Examples may include one or more of the following:

A. Fact Finding (gathering and presenting information)

B. Information Analysis (examining, interpreting and explaining information)

C. Persuasion (influencing your audience to view information as you do)

D. Problem Solving (presenting information about a crisis and its resolution)

3. FORMULATE QUESTIONS

A. Make a list of research questions that will give your project direction .

Example e : "What are the primary causes of global warming ?"

B. Use your questions to make a list of keywords . These can be used later when you start your research, especially with online resources.

Note: Use your key words to make a list of synonyms as well as related, broader, and narrower search terms.

Example: The key word or term in the example question is global warming . A synonym would be greenhouse effect and a related term might be ozone depletion .

4. SET GOALS

Keeping your tasks and questions in mind, determine what you hope to accomplish with your project or paper.

A. What do you want your audience to learn from the information you are presenting?

B. What is the best way to present that information?

Using your keywords and research questions, develop a thesis statement. You will refer back to this statement throughout the process of completing your project.

Example: A study of global warming shows that the causes are both naturally occurring and man-made.

5. SELECT YOUR RESOURCES

Figure out which materials are going to work best for your project. Options include: Online research databases like those offered by EBSCO (MAS Ultra, History Reference Center, Science Reference Center) as well as books, reference books, dictionaries, magazines, newspapers, audio and video files and search engines.

  • Determine the pros and cons of your resource choices. Things to think about include:

I. Which include the most information?

II. Which are the most accurate?

III. Which are easiest to use?

IV. Which are fastest?

Example: Search engines are fairly simple to use, but results often lack accuracy and finding reputable sources can be difficult and time consuming.

6. GATHER INFORMATION

Read, watch and/or listen to everything you’ve collected.

7. EVALUATE YOUR INFORMATION

This is the time to make sure your information meets the requirements you defined in steps 2 through 4.

A. Will it help you to complete your tasks?

B. Does your research answer all or most of your questions?

C. Will your research allow you to attain your goals and prove the points in your thesis statement?

Note: If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” you may need to do more research, review your information to find more answers, or weed out information that will not be helpful.

8. ORGANIZE YOUR INFORMATION

A. Organize and repackage your information in an outline.

B. Write a rough draft.

C. Ask someone you trust to help edit your draft. A second pair of eyes is invaluable.

9. PRODUCE YOUR FINAL PRODUCT

Whether the final product is a research paper, editorial, dramatic presentation, audio/video production, art project, oral report, debate or any other project, if you carefully followed steps 1 through 8, you have already improved your odds of success!

Introduction to Environmental Science:  This course is an exploration into the science that directly affects us all on a daily basis, and that will likely increase in its significance to us with time.  You will be introduced to the scientific study of our environment, as well as the technological, social, political and economic challenges required for the understanding and critical examination of related issues.

Instructional Methodology:  This course is taught in the classroom in a lecture/discussion format.  There will also be in- and outside-class, individual and collaborative assignments related to the course material.

Course Rationale:  As the world's population grows and expands, humans are placing a greater demand on the Earth’s resources, increasing the volume and extent of pollution, and causing a rapid change in the world's climate, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems.  In this course, students will be introduced to the Earth’s life-supporting ecological systems, and how humans interact with and sometimes threaten those systems.  Consumers, voters, and decision-makers need to understand human interactions with the Earth, and the limitations that science and technology have in reducing any negative impacts of those interactions.  This course will expose the student to potential solutions as well as the limitations of these solutions due to science, technology, cultural beliefs, political systems, and resource availability.  As members of society and the Earth, we are collectively responsible for environmental impacts and must also be responsible for making educated decisions when influencing environmental issues, electing policy making officials, and choosing lifestyles.  Information learned in this class should aid one in making those decisions.

Course Objectives:   The general objectives of this course are to expose students to:

  • How science and the scientific method address environment systems and issues.
  • The Earth’s major natural systems, how these systems function, and how they are affected by human activity.
  • The sustainability, and unsustainability, of various interactions between human society and the Earth’s natural systems (ie. energy use and generation, resource consumption and economics, food production).

Course Requirements

Course  Work

Course work includes:

  • Four exams,
  • Four assignments, and
  • Class Participation.

Exams  (4 @ 15 points each = 60% of Final Grade)

There will be four exams during the semester.  The exams will cover all assigned text readings, and all class lectures, handouts, assignments and class activities.  Each exam will contain short answer, multiple-choice, matching and/or essay type questions. Scantron answer sheets will be used in addition to answer sheets provided with the exam. 

All exams will be taken during the class period.  Exam #4 will be comprehensive; with up to 50% questions related to topics previously covered by the first three exams and Assignment #1 quiz.  Keep all of your notes from the entire semester and don’t clear you memory of material after each exam (build on what you have learned and make connections with new information!).

Exam Grading:   Exam grades will account for a total of 60% of the course final grade (each exam is worth 15% of final course grade).

  IMPORTANT:

  • NO student will be allowed leave the classroom during an exam without submitting their completed exam.
  • NO exams will be given early. 
  • NO MAKE-UP EXAMS .   If an exam (Exams #1, #2, or #3 only) must be missed due to an EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCE that is entirely out of the control of the student, then the lowest grade earned on the remaining exams taken, excluding the Final Exam, LESS 10 POINTS will be counted in place of the missed exam grade.  This grade substitution for a missed exam will be allowed ONLY if there is a legitimate and documented excuse, and determination of the legitimacy of a given excuse is entirely at the discretion of the instructor.  Circumstances including, but not limited to, vacation, incarceration, work, or lack of transportation will NOT be considered legitimate excuses.  It will be the student’s responsibility to provide legitimate and sufficient documentation for any and all situations.  Note that this policy precludes more than one legitimately missed exam.  Timely communication the instructor is always important but especially imperative with respect to the subject of course exams.
  • Exam #4 must be taken AND must be taken on the specified Exam #4 exam date (last day of classes).  An exam score of ZERO will result if these requirements are not met.

Assignment #1:  Course Introduction (5% of Final Grade)

Assignment #1 is designed to introduce the student to course requirements, procedures and introductory topics.  Assignment #1 consists of the following two components:

  • Take Home Quiz, and
  • In-Class Quiz.   

Take Home Quiz will be provided to students on the first day of class.  Students will complete this portion of Assignment #1 at home and it is due at the beginning of class on the scheduled due date.

In-Class Quiz will be given at the end of class on the scheduled date and will cover Chapter 1, and any other material covered in class. 

IMPORTANT : 

  • NO MAKE UP In-Quiz:    This Quiz must be taken in class on the scheduled date.
  • 10 points will be deducted from grades for all late work.  NO Take Home Quizzes will be accepted after the next class period following the due date

                                            

Assignment #2:  Group News Article Review (10% of Final Grade)

Students will individually locate and review news media articles on assigned environmental topics, share what they have learned with assigned team members, and collectively develop a final team document that summarizes information learned.  The objectives of this assignment are to encourage students to become both habitual and critical readers of science news, specifically topics related to environmental issues, and to interact with members of the class community.

Note:  All assignment work will be submitted using a pre-formatted Google Spreadsheet posted on the team’s Google Team Drive.

The group news article review project requirements will be detailed in an assignment document and will include:

  • Students will be assigned to teams of 4 to 6 members.  Teams will be posted on Blackboard.  Each team will be assigned to a different environmental science topic.
  • Each team member will locate one unique news article on the assigned topic and post the article information (title, source, date) on a pre-formatted Google Spreadsheet document (Team Spreadsheet) found on their Google Team Drive.  Posting the article information will ensure all articles selected by team members are unique.
  • Each team member will read their article, and prepare and post a review of the article on their Team Spreadsheet, in the format specified in the spreadsheet document.
  • Each member will read the articles and associated article reviews of each of their team members, and post a brief comment on the Team Spreadsheet, in the format specified in the spreadsheet document.
  • All member articles and reviews,
  • Summary of information learned in all articles,
  • Comparison and contrast information presented in different articles,
  • Note information learned that relates to course topics, and
  • Team opinion of assignment: lessons learned, educational value (or not), suggested revisions to assignment.

Deadline :   Wednesday, October 9 – Group Project Summary .  Note that deadlines for individual components of assignment precede the final Group Project Summary posting and are specified in the assignment document.

Assignment #3: Climate Change (11% of Final Grade) 

This assignment is designed to allow you to explore and collect information on arguably the most important global environmental issue that we currently face:  Global Climate Change.  The objective is to increase your understanding of the topic more deeply than what will be covered in class lecture and in the text.  Assignment #3 includes the viewing of assigned videos (independently and possibly in class), and review of UN climate change reports.  You will then answer a series of questions specific to the information of the topic.  The Assignment #3 document that identifies the videos, reports, and associated questions will be provided in the course’s Blackboard Assignment folder. 

  • 10 points will be deducted from the grades of all late work.  NO Assignment #4 work will be accepted after the next class period following the specified due date.
  • Collaboration on this assignment (in terms of viewing and discussion) is encouraged.  However, individual work (in terms of answering the assignment questions) is required.  Any borrowing, lending, or other type of sharing of any student’s work is considered an act of plagiarism and will results in dramatic deductions in the grades for all involved parties.

Assignment #4:  Poster Session (12% of Final Grade)

This assignment involves research with a classmate on a local organization that provides information on and opportunities for involvement in environmental issues and awareness.   The objective is to not only educate yourselves, but to be an advocate for your organization and educate your classmates about your organization. You and your partner will present your findings in poster format to the class during a class poster session.   The Assignment #4 document which details poster session requirements, including due dates for four separate assignment components, will be provided in the course’s Blackboard Assignment folder. 

  • This is a collaborate effort requiring input from and cooperation of two students.  It is imperative that students fully understand this and agree to these conditions.  It is encouraged that each student considers who they would like to work with and discuss this assignment with potential candidates prior to the deadline for identifying partner and topics (#4.1). 
  • All components of Assignment #4 (except the actual poster session) are due by midnight on the specified due date.
  • 10 points will be deducted from the grades of all late work.  NO Assignment #4 work will be accepted after the next class period following the due date.
  • You will earn a grade of ZERO on the presentation portion of the grade if notice of an irresolvable schedule conflict is not given at least 2 weeks prior to the poster session.  
  • Regardless of circumstances, a minimum 50% penalty will be assessed if the poster is not presented, or a partner does not attend class, on the session date or if the poster is not presented beginning at the start of the poster session day.

Class Participation (2% of Final Grade)

Class Participation will be evaluated based on class attendance and timeliness.  Attendance will be taken at the beginning only of each class by sign-in sheet.  It is the sole responsibility of the student to sign-in at the beginning of each class period.

What is Environmental Studies?

Environmental studies refer to an extensive and systematic study of nature/environment and of its physical, biological, social, and cultural factors, and the nature and characteristics of relationship between man and environment. How far man influences nature and to what extent nature delivers its bounties constitute another objective of environmental studies. It is an interdisciplinary study as subjects like ecology, biochemistry, toxicology, geography, geology, meteorology, sociology, etc. are dealt with under environmental studies.

In today’s world because of industrialization and increasing population, the natural resources have been rapidly utilised and our environment is being increasingly degraded by human activities, so we need to protect the environment. It is not only the duty of the government but also the people to take an active role in protecting the environment, so protecting our environment is economically more viable than cleaning it up once it is damaged.

Need for Environmental Studies :

Nature or the environment sustains life. As a conscious and rational being, man needs to know the importance of the environment and help keep the environment as healthy and productive as it can be. It is the environment that has made this beautiful world possible for him. Hence, there is an ever demanding need for environmental studies.

The natural environment that mankind had before the onset of industrialization, urbanisation, and exponential growth in population was expectedly healthy and resilient.

Nature was able to replenish the loss of its resources, which was very limited. After the onset of modern civilization, the overall health and efficiency of the natural environment started deteriorating gradually and went on to such an extent that nature has virtually lost its natural ability to replenish the loss of resources caused by man.

Environmentalists, geographers, and biologists the world over are constantly endeavouring for a sustainable solution to restore a sustainable environment. There is a need to focus on environmental management, laws governing environment protection, pollution and recycling of non-bio-degradable material, etc. There is also a need for careful and cautious use of natural resources in the present time to establish sustainability in every aspect of nature.

There is a need to clarify modern environmental concepts such as how to conserve biodiversity and maintain an ecological balance.

Environmental studies help us understand the importance of our environment and teaches us to use natural resources more efficiently and embrace a sustainable way of living. It enables us to know the behaviour of organisms under natural conditions and the interrelationship between organisms in population and communities.

Scope of Environmental Studies:

The disciplines included in environmental education are environmental sciences, environmental engineering and environmental management.

(a) Environmental Science:

It deals with the scientific study of the environmental system (air, water, soil and land), the inherent or induced changes in organisms and the environmental damages incurred as a result of human interaction with the environment.

(b) Environmental Engineering:

It deals with the study of technical processes involved in the protection of the environment from the potentially deleterious effects of human activity and improving the environmental quality for the health and well being of humans.

(c) Environmental Management:

It promotes due regard for the physical, social and economic environment of the enterprise or projects. It encourages planned investment at the start of the production chain rather than forced investment in cleaning up at the end.

It generally covers the areas as environment and enterprise objectives, scope, and structure of the environment, interaction of nature, society and the enterprise, environment impact assessment, economics of pollution, prevention, environmental management standards etc.

Objectives of Environmental Studies:

Creating awareness about environmental problems among people.

Imparting basic knowledge about the environment and its allied problems.

Developing an attitude of concern for the environment.

Motivating the public to participate in environment protection and environment improvement.

Acquiring skills to help the concerned individuals in identifying and solving environmental problems.

Striving to attain harmony with Nature.

Importance of Environmental Studies:

The importance of environmental studies are as follows:

1. Environmental studies helps to understand the current environmental problems through the knowledge of physical, chemical, biological, and social processes. It provides the skills necessary to obtain solutions to environmental problems. It encourages the development and application of scientific principles to solve environmental problems.

2. Environmental studies helps to maintain ecological balance through basic operating knowledge of environmental systems and processes. It gives information regarding the changes in the environment due to anthropogenic factors. It helps gain skills to analyse the various environment systems and the effect of human activities on them.

3. Environmental studies helps to achieve sustainable development through the understanding of the relationships of development and environment. The concepts of environmental studies can be applied to study agriculture and design sustainable production systems.

4. Environmental studies aims to protect biodiversity. Growth in human population, increased material consumption, and technological development has increased the rate and scale of environmental degradation leading to loss of biodiversity.

5. Environmental studies helps to educate people regarding their duties towards environmental protection. It provides basic information about the various environmental issues like energy needs, global climate change, toxic emissions, and waste disposal. It provides knowledge about development and utilisation of energy resources and importance of environmental stability in contemporary culture.

6. The study enables the people to understand the complexities of the environment and the need for the people to adapt appropriate activities and pursue sustainable development, which are harmonious with the environment. The study motivates students to get involved in community action, and to participate in various environmental and management projects.

7. Environmental studies take a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human interactions with the natural environment. It integrates different approaches of the humanities , social sciences, biological sciences and physical sciences and applies these approaches to investigate environmental concerns.

8. Environmental study is a key instrument for bringing about the changes in the knowledge, values, behaviours and lifestyles required to achieve sustainability and stability within and among countries.

Importance of Environmental Education in India:

In the context of environmental education, it needs to be pointed out that environmental education opens up many Career opportunities. With increasing awareness and stress on study of the environment and on its impact at various levels, there is a growing need for environmental educators and professionals.

Professionals to deal with hazardous waste problems, lawyers and other specialists to develop government and industry policy, laws and regulations to protect the environment, engineers to develop technologies and products to prevent environmental degradation are the need of the hour.

Increasingly, economists, geographers and social scientists would be required to evaluate the costs of environmental pollution and depletion and come up with solutions that are socially, economically and in other ways suitable for the world.

Business too needs a new class of environmentally literate and responsible leaders who can study how products and services affect our environment. Environment-related jobs would occupy a prominent place in the years to come. So environmental education, as a discipline and as an aspect linked to all other disciplines, is not only vital in it but also has a tremendous scope in terms of job creation.

Importance of Public Awareness:

By exercising following actions, humans can protect global environment for sustainable development:

(i) Preserve forest cover:

Humans should minimise cutting of trees and using timber for aesthetic pleasure such as decoration of drawing rooms.

(ii) Preserve natural resources:

Humans should not extract unnecessarily and exhaustively the natural resources such as mineral resources, water resources, etc.

(iii) Conserve energy:

Humans should not harness too much energy from burning fossil fuels.

(iv) Maintain ecological balance:

Humans should exploit the synergy between green revolution and industrial evolution by compulsory growing green belts around industrial areas, maintaining wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.

(v) Practice green technology:

Everyone from a farmer in the village to a policy planner in the government should use green technology that incorporates:

Treatment of air emissions,

Treatment of waste waters,

Waste reduction, waste or emission management,

Use of non-conventional, renewable energy resources like solar energy on priority, etc.
