If you haven’t done so already, decide on a topic to write about. Read up about it using a variety of credible sources and make detailed notes while you research. Make sure you keep track of the sources you decide to pull information from so that you can cite them properly later.

Make a list of key points from your research. Once you have a good selection of material to work with, start developing your own idea or argument. This will be the focus of your essay.

Step 2. Create an Outline

Writing a synthesis essay requires the ability to digest information and present it in an organized fashion. While this skill is developed in high school and college classes, it translates to the business and advertising world as well. Scroll down to Step 1 to begin learning how to write a synthesis essay.

Examining Your Topic

Step 1 Understand the concept of a synthesis essay.

  • Argument synthesis: This type of essay has a strong thesis statement that presents the writer's point of view. It organizes relevant information gathered from research in a logical manner to support the thesis' point of view. Business white papers known as position papers often take this form. This is the type of synthesis essay that students will write during the AP test.
  • Review: Often written as a preliminary essay to an argument synthesis, a review essay is a discussion of what has been written previously on a topic, with a critical analysis of the sources covered. Its unstated thesis is usually that more research needs to be done in that area or that the topic problem has not been adequately addressed. This type of paper is common in social science classes and in medicine.
  • Explanatory/background synthesis: This type of essay helps readers understand a topic by categorizing facts and presenting them to further the reader's understanding. It does not advocate a particular point of view, and if it has a thesis statement, the thesis is a weak one. Some business white papers take this form, although they are more likely to have a point of view, if understated.

Step 2 Choose a topic suitable for a synthesis essay.

  • Example of a broad topic narrowed down into a reasonable synthesis essay topic: Instead of the broad topic of Social Media, you could discuss your view on the effects texting has had on the English language.
  • If you've been assigned a topic as part of a class, make sure you read the prompt carefully and fully understand it.

Step 3 Choose and read your sources carefully.

  • Keep in mind that it's better to do three sources well than to do five sources incompletely.
  • Annotate each source by writing notes in the margins. This allows you to keep track of your train of thought, developing ideas, etc.

Step 4 Develop a thesis...

  • Example: Texting has had a positive impact on the English language as it has helped the millennial generation create their own form of the language.

Step 5 Re-read your source material for items to support your thesis.

  • If you wish to take on a claim by an opponent of your idea, and to poke holes in it, you should also find some ideas or quotes that go against your thesis statement, and plan ways to disprove them. This is called a concession, refutation, or rebuttal, which can strengthen your argument if you do it well.
  • Example : For the thesis statement listed above, excellent sources would include quotes from linguists discussing the new words that have developed through 'text-speak', statistics that show the English language has evolved with almost every generation, and facts that show students still have the ability to write with the use of grammar and spelling (which your opponents would bring up as the main reason texting has had a negative effect on the English language).

Outlining Your Essay

Step 1 Outline the structure of your thesis.

  • The introductory paragraph: 1. An introductory sentence that acts as a hook, capturing the reader's interest. 2. Identification of the issue you will be discussing. 3. Your thesis statement.
  • The body paragraphs: 1. Topic sentence that gives one reason to support your thesis. 2. Your explanation and opinion of the topic sentence. 3. Support from your sources that backs up the claim you just made. 4. Explanation of the significance of the source(s).
  • The conclusion paragraph: 1. State further significance of your topic from the evidence and reasons you discussed in the essay. 2. A profound thought or thoughtful ending for your paper.

Step 2 Use a more creative structure to present your thesis.

  • Example/illustration. This may be a detailed recount, summary, or direct quote from your source material that provides major support for your point of view. You may use more than one example or illustration, if your paper calls for it. You should not, however, make your paper a series of examples at the expense of supporting your thesis.
  • Straw man. With this technique, you present an argument opposed to the argument stated in your thesis, then show the weaknesses and flaws of the counter-argument. This format shows your awareness of the opposition and your readiness to answer it. You present the counter-argument right after your thesis, followed by the evidence to refute it, and end with a positive argument that supports your thesis. [5] X Research source
  • Concession. Essays with concessions are structured similar to those using the straw man technique, but they acknowledge the validity of the counter-argument while showing that the original argument is stronger. This structure is good for presenting papers to readers who hold the opposing viewpoint.
  • Comparison and contrast. This structure compares similarities and contrasts differences between two subjects or sources to show the facets of both. Writing an essay with this structure requires a careful reading of your source material to find both subtle and major points of similarity and difference. This kind of essay can present its arguments source-by-source or by points of similarity or difference.

Step 3 Create an outline appropriate for a background or review synthesis essay.

  • Summary. This structure presents summaries of each of your relevant sources, making a progressively stronger argument for your thesis. It provides specific evidence to support your point of view, but usually omits presenting your own opinions. It's most commonly used for background and review essays.
  • List of reasons. This is a series of sub-points that flow from the main point of your paper as stated in its thesis. Each reason is supported with evidence. As with the summary method, reasons should become progressively more important, with the most important reason last.

Writing Your Essay

Step 1 Write your first draft according to your outline.

  • Your essay should have an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis , a body to present evidence that supports your thesis, and a conclusion that summarizes your point of view.

Finalizing Your Essay

Step 1 Revise your essay.

  • Ask someone else to proofread your paper. The saying “two heads are better than one” still holds true. Ask a friend or colleague what would they add or remove from the paper. Most importantly, does your argument make sense, and is it clearly supported by your sources?

Step 2 Proofread your paper.

  • Read the paper aloud to guarantee that you don't accidentally add in or take out words when reading in your head.
  • If you can, get a friend or classmate to proofread your essay as well.

If you're planning to take the AP Language (or AP Lang) exam , you might already know that 55% of your overall exam score will be based on three essays. The first of the three essays you'll have to write on the AP Language exam is called the "synthesis essay." If you want to earn full points on this portion of the AP Lang Exam, you need to know what a synthesis essay is and what skills are assessed by the AP Lang synthesis essay.

In this article, we'll explain the different aspects of the AP Lang synthesis essay, including what skills you need to demonstrate in your synthesis essay response in order to achieve a good score. We'll also give you a full breakdown of a real AP Lang Synthesis Essay prompt, provide an analysis of an AP Lang synthesis essay example, and give you four tips for how to write a synthesis essay.

Let's get started by taking a closer look at how the AP Lang synthesis essay works!

Synthesis Essay AP Lang: What It Is and How It Works

The AP Lang synthesis essay is the first of three essays included in the Free Response section of the AP Lang exam.

The AP Lang synthesis essay portion of the Free Response section lasts for one hour total . This hour consists of a recommended 15 minute reading period and a 40 minute writing period. Keep in mind that these time allotments are merely recommendations, and that exam takers can parse out the allotted 60 minutes to complete the synthesis essay however they choose.

Now, here's what the structure of the AP Lang synthesis essay looks like. The exam presents six to seven sources that are organized around a specific topic (like alternative energy or eminent domain, which are both past synthesis exam topics).

Of these six to seven sources, at least two are visual , including at least one quantitative source (like a graph or pie chart, for example). The remaining four to five sources are print text-based, and each one contains approximately 500 words.

In addition to six to seven sources, the AP Lang exam provides a written prompt that consists of three paragraphs. The prompt will briefly explain the essay topic, then present a claim that students will respond to in an essay that synthesizes material from at least three of the sources provided.

Here's an example prompt provided by the College Board:

Directions : The following prompt is based on the accompanying six sources.

This question requires you to integrate a variety of sources into a coherent, well-written essay. Refer to the sources to support your position; avoid mere paraphrase or summary. Your argument should be central; the sources should support this argument .

Remember to attribute both direct and indirect citations.

Introduction

Television has been influential in United States presidential elections since the 1960's. But just what is this influence, and how has it affected who is elected? Has it made elections fairer and more accessible, or has it moved candidates from pursuing issues to pursuing image?

Read the following sources (including any introductory information) carefully. Then, in an essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that television has had a positive impact on presidential elections.

Refer to the sources as Source A, Source B, etc.; titles are included for your convenience.

Like we mentioned earlier, this prompt gives you a topic — which it briefly explains — then asks you to take a position. In this case, you'll have to choose a stance on whether television has positively or negatively affected U.S. elections. You're also given six sources to evaluate and use in your response. Now that you have everything you need, now your job is to write an amazing synthesis essay.

But what does "synthesize" mean, exactly? According to the CollegeBoard, when an essay prompt asks you to synthesize, it means that you should "combine different perspectives from sources to form a support of a coherent position" in writing. In other words, a synthesis essay asks you to state your claim on a topic, then highlight the relationships between several sources that support your claim on that topic. Additionally, you'll need to cite specific evidence from your sources to prove your point.

The synthesis essay counts for six of the total points on the AP Lang exam . Students can receive 0-1 points for writing a thesis statement in the essay, 0-4 based on incorporation of evidence and commentary, and 0-1 points based on sophistication of thought and demonstrated complex understanding of the topic.

You'll be evaluated based on how effectively you do the following in your AP Lang synthesis essay:

Write a thesis that responds to the exam prompt with a defensible position

Provide specific evidence that to support all claims in your line of reasoning from at least three of the sources provided, and clearly and consistently explain how the evidence you include supports your line of reasoning

Demonstrate sophistication of thought by either crafting a thoughtful argument, situating the argument in a broader context, explaining the limitations of an argument

Make rhetorical choices that strengthen your argument and/or employ a vivid and persuasive style throughout your essay.

In this section, we'll teach you how to analyze and respond to a synthesis essay prompt in five easy steps, including suggested time frames for each step of the process.

Step 1: Analyze the Prompt

The very first thing to do when the clock starts running is read and analyze the prompt. To demonstrate how to do this, we'll look at the sample AP Lang synthesis essay prompt below. This prompt comes straight from the 2018 AP Lang exam:

Eminent domain is the power governments have to acquire property from private owners for public use. The rationale behind eminent domain is that governments have greater legal authority over lands within their dominion than do private owners. Eminent domain has been instituted in one way or another throughout the world for hundreds of years.

Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize material from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies the notion that eminent domain is productive and beneficial.

Your argument should be the focus of your essay. Use the sources to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.

On first read, you might be nervous about how to answer this prompt...especially if you don't know what eminent domain is! But if you break the prompt down into chunks, you'll be able to figure out what the prompt is asking you to do in no time flat.

To get a full understanding of what this prompt wants you to do, you need to identify the most important details in this prompt, paragraph by paragraph. Here's what each paragraph is asking you to do:

  • Paragraph 1: The prompt presents and briefly explains the topic that you'll be writing your synthesis essay about. That topic is the concept of eminent domain.
  • Paragraph 2: The prompt presents a specific claim about the concept of eminent domain in this paragraph: Eminent domain is productive and beneficial. This paragraph instructs you to decide whether you want to defend, challenge, or qualify that claim in your synthesis essay , and use material from at least three of the sources provided in order to do so.
  • Paragraph 3: In the last paragraph of the prompt, the exam gives you clear instructions about how to approach writing your synthesis essay . First, make your argument the focus of the essay. Second, use material from at least three of the sources to develop and explain your argument. Third, provide commentary on the material you include, and provide proper citations when you incorporate quotations, paraphrases, or summaries from the sources provided.

So basically, you'll have to agree with, disagree with, or qualify the claim stated in the prompt, then use at least three sources substantiate your answer. Since you probably don't know much about eminent domain, you'll probably decide on your position after you read the provided sources.

To make good use of your time on the exam, you should spend around 2 minutes reading the prompt and making note of what it's asking you to do. That will leave you plenty of time to read the sources provided, which is the next step to writing a synthesis essay.

Step 2: Read the Sources Carefully

After you closely read the prompt and make note of the most important details, you need to read all of the sources provided. It's tempting to skip one or two sources to save time--but we recommend you don't do this. That's because you'll need a thorough understanding of the topic before you can accurately address the prompt!

For the sample exam prompt included above, there are six sources provided. We're not going to include all of the sources in this article, but you can view the six sources from this question on the 2018 AP Lang exam here . The sources include five print-text sources and one visual source, which is a cartoon.

As you read the sources, it's important to read quickly and carefully. Don't rush! Keep your pencil in hand to quickly mark important passages that you might want to use as evidence in your synthesis. While you're reading the sources and marking passages, you want to think about how the information you're reading influences your stance on the issue (in this case, eminent domain).

When you finish reading, take a few seconds to summarize, in a phrase or sentence, whether the source defends, challenges, or qualifies whether eminent domain is beneficial (which is the claim in the prompt) . Though it might not feel like you have time for this, it's important to give yourself these notes about each source so you know how you can use each one as evidence in your essay.

Here's what we mean: say you want to challenge the idea that eminent domain is useful. If you've jotted down notes about each source and what it's saying, it will be easier for you to pull the relevant information into your outline and your essay.

So how much time should you spend reading the provided sources? The AP Lang exam recommends taking 15 minutes to read the sources . If you spend around two of those minutes reading and breaking down the essay prompt, it makes sense to spend the remaining 13 minutes reading and annotating the sources.

If you finish reading and annotating early, you can always move on to drafting your synthesis essay. But make sure you're taking your time and reading carefully! It's better to use a little extra time reading and understanding the sources now so that you don't have to go back and re-read the sources later.

Step 3: Write a Strong Thesis Statement

After you've analyzed the prompt and thoroughly read the sources, the next thing you need to do in order to write a good synthesis essay is write a strong thesis statement .

The great news about writing a thesis statement for this synthesis essay is that you have all the tools you need to do it at your fingertips. All you have to do in order to write your thesis statement is decide what your stance is in relationship to the topic provided.

In the example prompt provided earlier, you're essentially given three choices for how to frame your thesis statement: you can either defend, challenge, or qualify a claim that's been provided by the prompt, that eminent domain is productive and beneficial . Here's what that means for each option:

If you choose to defend the claim, your job will be to prove that the claim is correct . In this case, you'll have to show that eminent domain is a good thing.

If you choose to challenge the claim, you'll argue that the claim is incorrect. In other words, you'll argue that eminent domain isn't productive or beneficial.

If you choose to qualify, that means you'll agree with part of the claim, but disagree with another part of the claim. For instance, you may argue that eminent domain can be a productive tool for governments, but it's not beneficial for property owners. Or maybe you argue that eminent domain is useful in certain circumstances, but not in others.

When you decide whether you want your synthesis essay to defend, challenge, or qualify that claim, you need to convey that stance clearly in your thesis statement. You want to avoid simply restating the claim provided in the prompt, summarizing the issue without making a coherent claim, or writing a thesis that doesn't respond to the prompt.

Here's an example of a thesis statement that received full points on the eminent domain synthesis essay:

Although eminent domain can be misused to benefit private interests at the expense of citizens, it is a vital tool of any government that intends to have any influence on the land it governs beyond that of written law.

This thesis statement received full points because it states a defensible position and establishes a line of reasoning on the issue of eminent domain. It states the author's position (that some parts of eminent domain are good, but others are bad), then goes on to explain why the author thinks that (it's good because it allows the government to do its job, but it's bad because the government can misuse its power.)

Because this example thesis statement states a defensible position and establishes a line of reasoning, it can be elaborated upon in the body of the essay through sub-claims, supporting evidence, and commentary. And a solid argument is key to getting a six on your synthesis essay for AP Lang!

Step 4: Create a Bare-Bones Essay Outline

Once you've got your thesis statement drafted, you have the foundation you need to develop a bare bones outline for your synthesis essay. Developing an outline might seem like it's a waste of your precious time, but if you develop your outline well, it will actually save you time when you start writing your essay.

With that in mind, we recommend spending 5 to 10 minutes outlining your synthesis essay . If you use a bare-bones outline like the one below, labeling each piece of content that you need to include in your essay draft, you should be able to develop out the most important pieces of the synthesis before you even draft the actual essay.

  • Sums up the main line of reasoning that you developed and defended throughout the essay
  • Reiterates the thesis statement

Taking the time to develop these crucial pieces of the synthesis in a bare-bones outline will give you a map for your final essay. Once you have a map, writing the essay will be much easier.

Step 5: Draft Your Essay Response

The great thing about taking a few minutes to develop an outline is that you can develop it out into your essay draft. After you take about 5 to 10 minutes to outline your synthesis essay, you can use the remaining 30 to 35 minutes to draft your essay and review it.

Since you'll outline your essay before you start drafting, writing the essay should be pretty straightforward. You'll already know how many paragraphs you're going to write, what the topic of each paragraph will be, and what quotations, paraphrases, or summaries you're going to include in each paragraph from the sources provided. You'll just have to fill in one of the most important parts of your synthesis—your commentary.

Commentaries are your explanation of why your evidence supports the argument you've outlined in your thesis. Your commentary is where you actually make your argument, which is why it's such a critical part of your synthesis essay.

When thinking about what to say in your commentary, remember one thing the AP Lang synthesis essay prompt specifies: don't just summarize the sources. Instead, as you provide commentary on the evidence you incorporate, you need to explain how that evidence supports or undermines your thesis statement . You should include commentary that offers a thoughtful or novel perspective on the evidence from your sources to develop your argument.

One very important thing to remember as you draft out your essay is to cite your sources. The AP Lang exam synthesis essay prompt indicates that you can use generic labels for the sources provided (e.g. "Source 1," "Source 2," "Source 3," etc.). The exam prompt will indicate which label corresponds with which source, so you'll need to make sure you pay attention and cite sources accurately. You can cite your sources in the sentence where you introduce a quote, summary, or paraphrase, or you can use a parenthetical citation. Citing your sources affects your score on the synthesis essay, so remembering to do this is important.

While there are multiple essay examples online, we've chosen one to take a closer look at. We're going to give you a brief analysis of one of these example student synthesis essays from the 2019 AP Lang Exam below!

Example Synthesis Essay AP Lang Response

To get started, let's look at the official prompt for the 2019 synthesis essay:

In response to our society's increasing demand for energy, large-scale wind power has drawn attention from governments and consumers as a potential alternative to traditional materials that fuel our power grids, such as coal, oil, natural gas, water, or even newer sources such as nuclear or solar power. Yet the establishment of large-scale, commercial-grade wind farms is often the subject of controversy for a variety of reasons.

Carefully read the six sources, found on the AP English Language and Composition 2019 Exam (Question 1), including the introductory information for each source. Write an essay that synthesizes material from at least three of the sources and develops your position on the most important factors that an individual or agency should consider when deciding whether to establish a wind farm.

In your response you should do the following:

  • Respond to the prompt with a thesis presents a defensible position.

  • Explain how the evidence supports your line of reasoning.
  • Use appropriate grammar and punctuation in communicating your argument.

Now that you know exactly what the prompt asked students to do on the 2019 AP Lang synthesis essay, here's an AP Lang synthesis essay example, written by a real student on the AP Lang exam in 2019:

[1] The situation has been known for years, and still very little is being done: alternative power is the only way to reliably power the changing world. The draw of power coming from industry and private life is overwhelming current sources of non-renewable power, and with dwindling supplies of fossil fuels, it is merely a matter of time before coal and gas fuel plants are no longer in operation. So one viable alternative is wind power. But as with all things, there are pros and cons. The main factors for power companies to consider when building wind farms are environmental boon, aesthetic, and economic factors.

[2] The environmental benefits of using wind power are well-known and proven. Wind power is, as qualified by Source B, undeniably clean and renewable. From their production requiring very little in the way of dangerous materials to their lack of fuel, besides that which occurs naturally, wind power is by far one of the least environmentally impactful sources of power available. In addition, wind power by way of gearbox and advanced blade materials, has the highest percentage of energy retention. According to Source F, wind power retains 1,164% of the energy put into the system – meaning that it increases the energy converted from fuel (wind) to electricity 10 times! No other method of electricity production is even half that efficient. The efficiency and clean nature of wind power are important to consider, especially because they contribute back to power companies economically.

[3] Economically, wind power is both a boon and a bone to electric companies and other users. For consumers, wind power is very cheap, leading to lower bills than from any other source. Consumers also get an indirect reimbursement by way of taxes (Source D). In one Texan town, McCamey, tax revenue increased 30% from a wind farm being erected in the town. This helps to finance improvements to the town. But, there is no doubt that wind power is also hurting the power companies. Although, as renewable power goes, wind is incredibly cheap, it is still significantly more expensive than fossil fuels. So, while it is helping to cut down on emissions, it costs electric companies more than traditional fossil fuel plants. While the general economic trend is positive, there are some setbacks which must be overcome before wind power can take over as truly more effective than fossil fuels.

[4] Aesthetics may be the greatest setback for power companies. Although there may be significant economic and environmental benefit to wind power, people will always fight to preserve pure, unspoiled land. Unfortunately, not much can be done to improve the visual aesthetics of the turbines. White paint is the most common choice because it "[is] associated with cleanliness." (Source E). But, this can make it stand out like a sore thumb, and make the gargantuan machines seem more out of place. The site can also not be altered because it affects generating capacity. Sound is almost worse of a concern because it interrupts personal productivity by interrupting people's sleep patterns. One thing for power companies to consider is working with turbine manufacturing to make the machines less aesthetically impactful, so as to garner greater public support.

[5] As with most things, wind power has no easy answer. It is the responsibility of the companies building them to weigh the benefits and the consequences. But, by balancing economics, efficiency, and aesthetics, power companies can create a solution which balances human impact with environmental preservation.

And that's an entire AP Lang synthesis essay example, written in response to a real AP Lang exam prompt! It's important to remember AP Lang exam synthesis essay prompts are always similarly structured and worded, and students often respond in around the same number of paragraphs as what you see in the example essay response above.

Next, let's analyze this example essay and talk about what it does effectively, where it could be improved upon, and what score past exam scorers awarded it.

To get started on an analysis of the sample synthesis essay, let's look at the scoring commentary provided by the College Board:

  • For development of thesis, the essay received 1 out of 1 possible points
  • For evidence and commentary, the essay received 4 out of 4 possible points
  • For sophistication of thought, the essay received 0 out of 1 possible points.

This means that the final score for this example essay was a 5 out of 6 possible points . Let's look more closely at the content of the example essay to figure out why it received this score breakdown.

Thesis Development

The thesis statement is one of the three main categories that is taken into consideration when you're awarded points on this portion of the exam. This sample essay received 1 out of 1 total points.

Now, here's why: the thesis statement clearly and concisely conveys a position on the topic presented in the prompt--alternative energy and wind power--and defines the most important factors that power companies should consider when deciding whether to establish a wind farm.

Evidence and Commentary

The second key category taken into consideration when synthesis exams are evaluated is incorporation of evidence and commentary. This sample received 4 out of 4 possible points for this portion of the synthesis essay. At bare minimum, this sample essay meets the requirement mentioned in the prompt that the writer incorporate evidence from at least three of the sources provided.

On top of that, the writer does a good job of connecting the incorporated evidence back to the claim made in the thesis statement through effective commentary. The commentary in this sample essay is effective because it goes beyond just summarizing what the provided sources say. Instead, it explains and analyzes the evidence presented in the selected sources and connects them back to supporting points the writer makes in each body paragraph.

Finally, the writer of the essay also received points for evidence and commentary because the writer developed and supported a consistent line of reasoning throughout the essay . This line of reasoning is summed up in the fourth paragraph in the following sentence: "One thing for power companies to consider is working with turbine manufacturing to make the machines less aesthetically impactful, so as to garner greater public support."

Because the writer did a good job consistently developing their argument and incorporating evidence, they received full marks in this category. So far, so good!

Sophistication of Thought

Now, we know that this essay received a score of 5 out of 6 total points, and the place where the writer lost a point was on the basis of sophistication of thought, for which the writer received 0 out of 1 points. That's because this sample essay makes several generalizations and vague claims where it could have instead made specific claims that support a more balanced argument.

For example, in the following sentence from the 5th paragraph of the sample essay, the writer misses the opportunity to state specific possibilities that power companies should consider for wind energy . Instead, the writer is ambiguous and non-committal, saying, "As with most things, wind power has no easy answer. It is the responsibility of the companies building them to weigh the benefits and consequences."

If the writer of this essay was interested in trying to get that 6th point on the synthesis essay response, they could consider making more specific claims. For instance, they could state the specific benefits and consequences power companies should consider when deciding whether to establish a wind farm. These could include things like environmental impacts, economic impacts, or even population density!

Despite losing one point in the last category, this example synthesis essay is a strong one. It's well-developed, thoughtfully written, and advances an argument on the exam topic using evidence and support throughout.

4 Tips for How to Write a Synthesis Essay

AP Lang is a timed exam, so you have to pick and choose what you want to focus on in the limited time you're given to write the synthesis essay. Keep reading to get our expert advice on what you should focus on during your exam.

Tip 1: Read the Prompt First

It may sound obvious, but when you're pressed for time, it's easy to get flustered. Just remember: when it comes time to write the synthesis essay, read the prompt first !

Why is it so important to read the prompt before you read the sources? Because when you're aware of what kind of question you're trying to answer, you'll be able to read the sources more strategically. The prompt will help give you a sense of what claims, points, facts, or opinions to be looking for as you read the sources.

Reading the sources without having read the prompt first is kind of like trying to drive while wearing a blindfold: you can probably do it, but it's likely not going to end well!

Tip 2: Make Notes While You Read

During the 15-minute reading period at the beginning of the synthesis essay, you'll be reading through the sources as quickly as you can. After all, you're probably anxious to start writing!

While it's definitely important to make good use of your time, it's also important to read closely enough that you understand your sources. Careful reading will allow you to identify parts of the sources that will help you support your thesis statement in your essay, too.

As you read the sources, consider marking helpful passages with a star or check mark in the margins of the exam so you know which parts of the text to quickly re-read as you form your synthesis essay. You might also consider summing up the key points or position of each source in a sentence or a few words when you finish reading each source during the reading period. Doing so will help you know where each source stands on the topic given and help you pick the three (or more!) that will bolster your synthesis argument.

Tip 3: Start With the Thesis Statement

If you don't start your synthesis essay with a strong thesis statement, it's going to be tough to write an effective synthesis essay. As soon as you finish reading and annotating the provided sources, the thing you want to do next is write a strong thesis statement.

According to the CollegeBoard grading guidelines for the AP Lang synthesis essay, a strong thesis statement will respond to the prompt— not restate or rephrase the prompt. A good thesis will take a clear, defensible position on the topic presented in the prompt and the sources.

In other words, to write a solid thesis statement to guide the rest of your synthesis essay, you need to think about your position on the topic at hand and then make a claim about the topic based on your position. This position will either be defending, challenging, or qualifying the claim made in the essay's prompt.

The defensible position that you establish in your thesis statement will guide your argument in the rest of the essay, so it's important to do this first. Once you have a strong thesis statement, you can begin outlining your essay.

Tip 4: Focus on Your Commentary

Writing thoughtful, original commentary that explains your argument and your sources is important. In fact, doing this well will earn you four points (out of a total of six)!

AP Lang provides six to seven sources for you on the exam, and you'll be expected to incorporate quotations, paraphrases, or summaries from at least three of those sources into your synthesis essay and interpret that evidence for the reader.

While incorporating evidence is very important, in order to get the extra point for "sophistication of thought" on the synthesis essay, it's important to spend more time thinking about your commentary on the evidence you choose to incorporate. The commentary is your chance to show original thinking, strong rhetorical skills, and clearly explain how the evidence you've included supports the stance you laid out in your thesis statement.

To earn the 6th possible point on the synthesis essay, make sure your commentary demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the source material, explains this nuanced understanding, and places the evidence incorporated from the sources in conversation with each other. To do this, make sure you're avoiding vague language. Be specific when you can, and always tie your commentary back to your thesis!

How to Synthesize: Working with Sources

After you’ve decided on your topic, it’s time to figure out how to synthesize articles into one text. This is how you do it:

  • Become familiar with them and see if they fit into your essay.
  • Try to find a few sources for each point. It will increase your essay’s reliability.

Instead, it is a type of argumentative essay where you need to analyze elements such as the language, perspective, and structure of the text, and explain how the author uses literary devices to create effects and convey ideas.

Before beginning a literary analysis essay, it’s essential to carefully read the text and c ome up with a thesis statement to keep your essay focused. As you write, follow the standard structure of an academic essay :

The first step is to carefully read the text(s) and take initial notes. As you read, pay attention to the things that are most intriguing, surprising, or even confusing in the writing—these are things you can dig into in your analysis.

Your goal in literary analysis is not simply to explain the events described in the text, but to analyze the writing itself and discuss how the text works on a deeper level. Primarily, you’re looking out for literary devices —textual elements that writers use to convey meaning and create effects. If you’re comparing and contrasting multiple texts, you can also look for connections between different texts.

To get started with your analysis, there are several key areas that you can focus on. As you analyze each aspect of the text, try to think about how they all relate to each other. You can use highlights or notes to keep track of important passages and quotes.

Language choices

Consider what style of language the author uses. Are the sentences short and simple or more complex and poetic?

What word choices stand out as interesting or unusual? Are words used figuratively to mean something other than their literal definition? Figurative language includes things like metaphor (e.g. “her eyes were oceans”) and simile (e.g. “her eyes were like oceans”).

Also keep an eye out for imagery in the text—recurring images that create a certain atmosphere or symbolize something important. Remember that language is used in literary texts to say more than it means on the surface.

Narrative voice

Ask yourself:

  • Who is telling the story?
  • How are they telling it?

Is it a first-person narrator (“I”) who is personally involved in the story, or a third-person narrator who tells us about the characters from a distance?

Consider the narrator’s perspective . Is the narrator omniscient (where they know everything about all the characters and events), or do they only have partial knowledge? Are they an unreliable narrator who we are not supposed to take at face value? Authors often hint that their narrator might be giving us a distorted or dishonest version of events.

The tone of the text is also worth considering. Is the story intended to be comic, tragic, or something else? Are usually serious topics treated as funny, or vice versa ? Is the story realistic or fantastical (or somewhere in between)?

Consider how the text is structured, and how the structure relates to the story being told.

  • Novels are often divided into chapters and parts.
  • Poems are divided into lines, stanzas, and sometime cantos.
  • Plays are divided into scenes and acts.

Think about why the author chose to divide the different parts of the text in the way they did.

There are also less formal structural elements to take into account. Does the story unfold in chronological order, or does it jump back and forth in time? Does it begin in medias res —in the middle of the action? Does the plot advance towards a clearly defined climax?

With poetry, consider how the rhyme and meter shape your understanding of the text and your impression of the tone. Try reading the poem aloud to get a sense of this.

In a play, you might consider how relationships between characters are built up through different scenes, and how the setting relates to the action. Watch out for  dramatic irony , where the audience knows some detail that the characters don’t, creating a double meaning in their words, thoughts, or actions.

Remember that you can revise your thesis statement throughout the writing process , so it doesn’t need to be perfectly formulated at this stage. The aim is to keep you focused as you analyze the text.

Finding textual evidence

To support your thesis statement, your essay will build an argument using textual evidence —specific parts of the text that demonstrate your point. This evidence is quoted and analyzed throughout your essay to explain your argument to the reader.

It can be useful to comb through the text in search of relevant quotations before you start writing. You might not end up using everything you find, and you may have to return to the text for more evidence as you write, but collecting textual evidence from the beginning will help you to structure your arguments and assess whether they’re convincing.

To start your literary analysis paper, you’ll need two things: a good title, and an introduction.

Your title should clearly indicate what your analysis will focus on. It usually contains the name of the author and text(s) you’re analyzing. Keep it as concise and engaging as possible.

A common approach to the title is to use a relevant quote from the text, followed by a colon and then the rest of your title.

If you struggle to come up with a good title at first, don’t worry—this will be easier once you’ve begun writing the essay and have a better sense of your arguments.

The introduction

The essay introduction provides a quick overview of where your argument is going. It should include your thesis statement and a summary of the essay’s structure.

A typical structure for an introduction is to begin with a general statement about the text and author, using this to lead into your thesis statement. You might refer to a commonly held idea about the text and show how your thesis will contradict it, or zoom in on a particular device you intend to focus on.

Then you can end with a brief indication of what’s coming up in the main body of the essay. This is called signposting. It will be more elaborate in longer essays, but in a short five-paragraph essay structure, it shouldn’t be more than one sentence.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, protagonist Victor Frankenstein is a stable representation of the callous ambition of modern science throughout the novel. This essay, however, argues that far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to portray Frankenstein in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as. This essay begins by exploring the positive portrayal of Frankenstein in the first volume, then moves on to the creature’s perception of him, and finally discusses the third volume’s narrative shift toward viewing Frankenstein as the creature views him.

Some students prefer to write the introduction later in the process, and it’s not a bad idea. After all, you’ll have a clearer idea of the overall shape of your arguments once you’ve begun writing them!

If you do write the introduction first, you should still return to it later to make sure it lines up with what you ended up writing, and edit as necessary.

The body of your essay is everything between the introduction and conclusion. It contains your arguments and the textual evidence that supports them.

Paragraph structure

A typical structure for a high school literary analysis essay consists of five paragraphs : the three paragraphs of the body, plus the introduction and conclusion.

Each paragraph in the main body should focus on one topic. In the five-paragraph model, try to divide your argument into three main areas of analysis, all linked to your thesis. Don’t try to include everything you can think of to say about the text—only analysis that drives your argument.

In longer essays, the same principle applies on a broader scale. For example, you might have two or three sections in your main body, each with multiple paragraphs. Within these sections, you still want to begin new paragraphs at logical moments—a turn in the argument or the introduction of a new idea.

Robert’s first encounter with Gil-Martin suggests something of his sinister power. Robert feels “a sort of invisible power that drew me towards him.” He identifies the moment of their meeting as “the beginning of a series of adventures which has puzzled myself, and will puzzle the world when I am no more in it” (p. 89). Gil-Martin’s “invisible power” seems to be at work even at this distance from the moment described; before continuing the story, Robert feels compelled to anticipate at length what readers will make of his narrative after his approaching death. With this interjection, Hogg emphasizes the fatal influence Gil-Martin exercises from his first appearance.

Topic sentences

To keep your points focused, it’s important to use a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.

A good topic sentence allows a reader to see at a glance what the paragraph is about. It can introduce a new line of argument and connect or contrast it with the previous paragraph. Transition words like “however” or “moreover” are useful for creating smooth transitions:

… The story’s focus, therefore, is not upon the divine revelation that may be waiting beyond the door, but upon the mundane process of aging undergone by the man as he waits.

Nevertheless, the “radiance” that appears to stream from the door is typically treated as religious symbolism.

This topic sentence signals that the paragraph will address the question of religious symbolism, while the linking word “nevertheless” points out a contrast with the previous paragraph’s conclusion.

Using textual evidence

A key part of literary analysis is backing up your arguments with relevant evidence from the text. This involves introducing quotes from the text and explaining their significance to your point.

It’s important to contextualize quotes and explain why you’re using them; they should be properly introduced and analyzed, not treated as self-explanatory:

It isn’t always necessary to use a quote. Quoting is useful when you’re discussing the author’s language, but sometimes you’ll have to refer to plot points or structural elements that can’t be captured in a short quote.

In these cases, it’s more appropriate to paraphrase or summarize parts of the text—that is, to describe the relevant part in your own words:

What does it mean to know something? How would you explain the process of thinking? In the 1950s, educational theorist Benjamin Bloom proposed that human cognition, thinking and knowing, could be classified by six categories. 1 Hierarchically arranged in order of complexity, these steps were:

  • Each word is an action verb instead of a noun (e.g., “applying” instead of “application”);
  • Some words have been changed for different synonyms;
  • One version holds “creating” above “evaluating”;
  • And, most importantly, other versions are reshaped into a circle, as pictured above. 2

I introduce this model of cognition to contextualize analysis as a cognitive tool which can work in tandem with other cognitive tasks and behaviors. Analysis is most commonly used alongside synthesis . To proceed with the LEGO® example from Chapter 4, consider my taking apart the castle as an act of analysis. I study each face of each block intently, even those parts that I can’t see when the castle is fully constructed. In the process of synthesis, I bring together certain blocks from the castle to instead build something else—let’s say, a racecar. By unpacking and interpreting each part , I’m able to build a new whole . 3

In a text wrestling essay, you’re engaging in a process very similar to my castle-to-racecar adventure. You’ll encounter a text and unpack it attentively, looking closely at each piece of language, its arrangement, its signification, and then use it to build an insightful, critical insight about the original text. I might not use every original block, but by exploring the relationship of part-to-whole, I better understand how the castle is a castle. In turn, I am better positioned to act as a sort of tour guide for the castle or a mechanic for the racecar, able to show my readers what about the castle or racecar is important and to explain how it works.

In this chapter, you’ll learn about crafting a thesis for a text wrestling essay and using evidence to support that thesis . As you will discover, an analytical essay involves every tier of Bloom’s Taxonomy, arguably even including “judgement” because your thesis will present an interpretation that is evidence-based and arguable.

So What? Turning Observations into a Thesis

It’s likely that you’ve heard the term “thesis statement” multiple times in your writing career. Even though you may have some idea what a thesis entails already, it is worth reviewing and unpacking the expectations surrounding a thesis, specifically in a text wrestling essay.

A thesis statement is a central, unifying insight that drives your analysis or argument. In a typical college essay, this insight should be articulated in one to three sentences, placed within the introductory paragraph or section. As we’ll see below, this is not always the case, but it is what many of your audiences will expect. To put it simply, a thesis is the “So what?” of an analytical or persuasive essay. It answers your audience when they ask, Why does your writing matter? What bigger insights does it yield about the subject of analysis? About our world?

Thesis statements in most rhetorical situations advocate for a certain vision of a text, phenomenon, reality, or policy. Good thesis statements support such a vision using evidence and thinking that confirms, clarifies, demonstrates, nuances, or otherwise relates to that vision. In other words, a thesis is “a proposition that you can prove with evidence…, yet it’s one you have to prove, that isn’t obviously true or merely factual.” 4

In a text wrestling analysis, a thesis pushes beyond basic summary and observation. In other words, it’s the difference between:

If you think of your essay as the human body, the thesis is the spine. Yes, the body can still exist without a spine, but its functionings will be severely limited. Furthermore, everything comes back to and radiates out from the spine: trace back from your fingertips to your backbone and consider how they relate. In turn, each paragraph should tie back to your thesis, offering support and clear connections so your reader can see the entire “body” of your essay. In this way, a thesis statement serves two purposes: it is not only about the ideas of your paper, but also the structure .

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) 5 suggests this specific process for developing your thesis statement:

  • Once you’ve read the story or novel closely, look back over your notes for patterns of questions or ideas that interest you. Have most of your questions been about the characters, how they develop or change?

For example: If you are reading Conrad’s  The Secret Agent , do you seem to be most interested in what the author has to say about society? Choose a pattern of ideas and express it in the form of a question and an answer such as the following:

Question:  What does Conrad seem to be suggesting about early twentieth-century London society in his novel  The Secret Agent ? Answer:  Conrad suggests that all classes of society are corrupt.

Pitfalls: Choosing too many ideas. Choosing an idea without any support.

  • Once you have some general points to focus on, write your possible ideas and answer the questions that they suggest.

For example: Question :  How does Conrad develop the idea that all classes of society are corrupt? Answer:  He uses images of beasts and cannibalism whether he’s describing socialites, policemen or secret agents.

  • To write your thesis statement, all you have to do is turn the question and answer around. You’ve already given the answer, now just put it in a sentence (or a couple of sentences) so that the thesis of your paper is clear.

For example: In his novel,  The Secret Agent , Conrad uses beast and cannibal imagery to describe the characters and their relationships to each other. This pattern of images suggests that Conrad saw corruption in every level of early twentieth-century London society.

  • Now that you’re familiar with the story or novel and have developed a thesis statement, you’re ready to choose the evidence you’ll use to support your thesis. There are a lot of good ways to do this, but all of them depend on a strong thesis for their direction.

For example: Here’s a student’s thesis about Joseph Conrad’s  The Secret Agent .

In his novel, The Secret Agent, Conrad uses beast and cannibal imagery to describe the characters and their relationships to each other. This pattern of images suggests that Conrad saw corruption in every level of early twentieth-century London society.

This thesis focuses on the idea of social corruption and the device of imagery. To support this thesis, you would need to find images of beasts and cannibalism within the text.

There are many ways to write a thesis, and your construction of a thesis statement will become more intuitive and nuanced as you become a more confident and competent writer. However, there are a few tried-and-true strategies that I’ll share with you over the next few pages.

The T3 Strategy

T3 is a formula to create a thesis statement. The T (for Thesis) should be the point you’re trying to make—the “So what?” In a text wrestling analysis, you are expected to advocate for a certain interpretation of a text: this is your “So what?” Examples might include:

In “A Wind from the North,” Bill Capossere conveys the loneliness of isolated life or Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” suggests that marriage can be oppressive to women

But wait—there’s more! In a text wrestling analysis, your interpretation must be based on evidence from that text. Therefore, your thesis should identify both a focused statement of the interpretation (the whole) and also the particular subjects of your observation (the parts of the text you will focus on support that interpretation). A complete T3 thesis statement for a text wrestling analysis might look more like this:

In “A Wind from the North,” Bill Capossere conveys the loneliness of an isolated lifestyle using the motif of snow, the repeated phrase “five or six days” (104), and the symbol of his uncle’s car. or “The Story of an Hour” suggests that marriage can be oppressive to women. To demonstrate this theme, Kate Chopin integrates irony, foreshadowing, and symbols of freedom in the story.

Notice the way the T3 allows for the part-to-whole thinking that underlies analysis:

This is also a useful strategy because it can provide structure for your paper: each justifying support for your thesis should be one section of your paper.

  • Thesis: In “A Wind from the North,” Bill Capossere conveys the loneliness of an isolated lifestyle using the motif of snow, the repeated phrase “five or six days” (104), and the symbol of his uncle’s car.
  • Section on ‘the motif of snow.’ Topic sentence: The recurring imagery of snow creates a tone of frostiness and demonstrates the passage of time.
  • Section on ‘the repeated phrase “five or six days” (104).’ Topic sentence: When Capossere repeats “five or six days” (104), he reveals the ambiguity of death in a life not lived.
  • Section on ‘the symbol of his uncle’s car.’ Topic sentence: Finally, Capossere’s uncle’s car is symbolic of his lifestyle.

Once you’ve developed a T3 statement, you can revise it to make it feel less formulaic. For example:

In “A Wind from the North,” Bill Capossere conveys the loneliness of an isolated lifestyle by symbolizing his uncle with a “untouchable” car. Additionally, he repeats images and phrases in the essay to reinforce his uncle’s isolation. or “The Story of an Hour,” a short story by Kate Chopin, uses a plot twist to imply that marriage can be oppressive to women. The symbols of freedom in the story create a feeling of joy, but the attentive reader will recognize the imminent irony.

The O/P Strategy

An occasion/position thesis statement is rhetorically convincing because it explains the relevance of your argument and concisely articulates that argument. Although you should already have your position in mind, your rhetorical occasion will lead this statement off: what sociohistorical conditions make your writing timely, relevant, applicable? Continuing with the previous examples:

As our society moves from individualism to isolationism, Bill Capossere’s “A Wind from the North” is a salient example of a life lived alone. or Although Chopin’s story was written over 100 years ago, it still provides insight to gender dynamics in American marriages.

Following your occasion, state your position—again, this is your “So What?” It is wise to include at least some preview of the parts you will be examining.

As our society moves from individualism to isolationism, Bill Capossere’s “A Wind from the North” is a salient example of a life lived alone. Using recurring images and phrases, Capossere conveys the loneliness of his uncle leading up to his death. or Although Chopin’s story was written over 100 years ago, it still provides insight to gender dynamics in American marriages. “The Story of an Hour” reminds us that marriage has historically meant a surrender of freedom for women.

Research Question and Embedded Thesis

There’s one more common style of thesis construction that’s worth noting, and that’s the inquiry-based thesis. (Read more about inquiry-based research writing in Chapter Eight). For this thesis, you’ll develop an incisive and focused question which you’ll explore throughout the course of the essay. By the end of the essay, you will be able to offer an answer (perhaps a complicated or incomplete answer, but still some kind of answer) to the question. This form is also referred to as the “embedded thesis” or “delayed thesis” organization.

Although this model of thesis can be effectively applied in a text wrestling essay, it is often more effective when combined with one of the other methods above.

Consider the following examples:

Bill Capossere’s essay “A Wind from the North” suggests that isolation results in sorrow and loneliness; is this always the case? How does Capossere create such a vision of his uncle’s life? or Many people would believe that Kate Chopin’s story reflects an outdated perception of marriage—but can “The Story of an Hour” reveal power imbalances in modern relationships, too?

Synthesis: Using Evidence to Explore Your Thesis

Now that you’ve considered what your analytical insight might be (articulated in the form of a thesis), it’s time to bring evidence in to support your analysis—this is the synthesis part of Bloom’s Taxonomy earlier in this chapter. Synthesis refers to the creation of a new whole (an interpretation) using smaller parts (evidence from the text you’ve analyzed).

There are essentially two ways to go about collecting and culling relevant support from the text with which you’re wrestling. In my experience, students are split about evenly on which option is better for them:

Option #1: Before writing your thesis, while you’re reading and rereading your text, annotate the page and take notes. Copy down quotes, images, formal features, and themes that are striking, exciting, or relatable. Then, try to group your collection of evidence according to common traits. Once you’ve done so, choose one or two groups on which to base your thesis. Or Option #2: After writing your thesis , revisit the text looking for quotes, images, and themes that support, elaborate, or explain your interpretation. Record these quotes, and then return to the drafting process.

Once you’ve gathered evidence from your focus text, you should weave quotes, paraphrases, and summaries into your own writing. A common misconception is that you should write “around” your evidence, i.e. choosing the direct quote you want to use and building a paragraph around it. Instead, you should foreground your interpretation and analysis, using evidence in the background to explore and support that interpretation. Lead with your idea, then demonstrate it with evidence; then, explain how your evidence demonstrates your idea.

The appropriate ratio of evidence (their writing) to exposition (your writing) will vary depending on your rhetorical situation, but I advise my students to spend at least as many words unpacking a quote as that quote contains. (I’m referring here to Step #4 in the table below.) For example, if you use a direct quote of 25 words, you ought to spend at least 25 words explaining how that quote supports or nuances your interpretation.

There are infinite ways to bring evidence into your discussion, 6 but for now, let’s take a look at a formula that many students find productive as they find their footing in analytical writing: Front-load + Quote/Paraphrase/Summarize + Cite + Explain/elaborate/analyze.

What might this look like in practice?

The recurring imagery of snow creates a tone of frostiness and demonstrates the passage of time. (1) Snow brings to mind connotations of wintery cold, quiet, and death (2) as a “sky of utter clarity and simplicity” lingers over his uncle’s home and “it [begins] once more to snow” ( (3) Capossere 104). This might feel formulaic and forced at first, but following these steps will ensure that you give each piece of evidence thorough attention. Some teachers call this method a “quote sandwich” because you put your evidence between two slices of your own language and interpretation.

Idea Generation: Close Reading Graphic Organizer

The first time you read a text, you most likely will not magically stumble upon a unique, inspiring insight to pursue as a thesis. As discussed earlier in this section, close reading is an iterative process, which means that you must repeatedly encounter a text (reread, re-watch, re-listen, etc.) trying to challenge it, interrogate it, and gradually develop a working thesis.

Very often, the best way to practice analysis is collaboratively, through discussion. Because other people will necessarily provide different perspectives through their unique interpretive positions, reading groups can help you grow your analysis. By discussing a text, you open yourself up to more nuanced and unanticipated interpretations influenced by your peers. Your teacher might ask you to work in small groups to complete the following graphic organizer in response to a certain text. (You can also complete this exercise independently, but it might not yield the same results.)

Thesis Builder

Your thesis statement can and should evolve as you continue writing your paper: teachers will often refer to a thesis as a “working thesis” because the revision process should include tweaking, pivoting, focusing, expanding, and/or rewording your thesis. The exercise on the next two pages, though, should help you develop a working thesis to begin your project. Following the examples, identify the components of your analysis that might contribute to a thesis statement.

Model Texts by Student Authors

(A text wrestling analysis of “Proofs” by Richard Rodriguez)

Songs are culturally important. In the short story “Proofs” by Richard Rodriguez, a young Mexican American man comes to terms with his bi-cultural life. This young man’s father came to America from a small and poverty-stricken Mexican village. The young man flashes from his story to his father’s story in order to explore his Mexican heritage and American life. Midway through the story Richard Rodriguez utilizes the analogies of songs to represent the cultures and how they differ. Throughout the story there is a clash of cultures. Because culture can be experienced through the arts and teachings of a community, Rodriguez uses the songs of the two cultures to represent the protagonist’s bi-cultural experience.

According to Rodriguez, the songs that come from Mexico express an emotional and loving culture and community: “But my mama says there are no songs like the love songs of Mexico” (50). The songs from that culture can be beautiful. It is amazing the love and beauty that come from social capital and community involvement. The language Richard Rodriguez uses to explain these songs is beautiful as well. “—it is the raw edge of sentiment” (51). The author explains how it is the men who keep the songs. No matter how stoic the men are, they have an outlet to express their love and pain as well as every emotion in between. “The cry of a Jackal under the moon, the whistle of a phallus, the maniacal song of the skull” (51). This is an outlet for men to express themselves that is not prevalent in American culture. It expresses a level of love and intimacy between people that is not a part of American culture. The songs from the American culture are different. In America the songs get lost. There is assimilation of cultures. The songs of Mexico are important to the protagonist of the story. There is a clash between the old culture in Mexico and the subject’s new American life represented in these songs.

A few paragraphs later in the story, on page 52, the author tells us the difference in the American song. America sings a different tune. America is the land of opportunity. It represents upward mobility and the ability to “make it or break it.” But it seems there is a cost for all this material gain and all this opportunity. There seems to be a lack of love and emotion, a lack of the ability to express pain and all other feelings, the type of emotion which is expressed in the songs of Mexico. The song of America says, “You can be anything you want to be” (52). The song represents the American Dream. The cost seems to be the loss of compassion, love and emotion that is expressed through the songs of Mexico. There is no outlet quite the same for the stoic men of America. Rodriguez explains how the Mexican migrant workers have all that pain and desire, all that emotion penned up inside until it explodes in violent outbursts. “Or they would come into town on Monday nights for the wrestling matches or on Tuesdays for boxing. They worked over in Yolo County. They were men without women. They were Mexicans without Mexico” (49).

Rodriguez uses the language in the story almost like a song in order to portray the culture of the American dream. The phrase “I will send for you or I will come home rich,” is repeated twice throughout the story. The gain for all this loss of love and compassion is the dream of financial gain. “You have come into the country on your knees with your head down. You are a man” (48). That is the allure of the American Dream.

The protagonist of the story was born in America. Throughout the story he is looking at this illusion of the American Dream through a different frame. He is also trying to come to terms with his own manhood in relation to his American life and Mexican heritage. The subject has the ability to see the two songs in a different light. “The city will win. The city will give the children all the village could not-VCR’s, hairstyles, drumbeat. The city sings mean songs, dirty songs” (52). Part of the subject’s reconciliation process with himself is seeing that all the material stuff that is dangled as part of the American Dream is not worth the love and emotion that is held in the old Mexican villages and expressed in their songs.

Rodriguez represents this conflict of culture on page 53. The protagonist of the story is taking pictures during the arrest of illegal border-crossers. “I stare at the faces. They stare at me. To them I am not bearing witness; I am part of the process of being arrested”(53). The subject is torn between the two cultures in a hazy middle ground. He is not one of the migrants and he is not one of the police. He is there taking pictures of the incident with a connection to both of the groups and both of the groups see him connected with the other.

The old Mexican villages are characterized by a lack of : “Mexico is poor” (50). However, this is not the reason for the love and emotion that is held. The thought that people have more love and emotion because they are poor is a misconception. There are both rich people and poor people who have multitudes of love and compassion. The defining elements in creating love and emotion for each other comes from the level of community interaction and trust—the ability to sing these love songs and express emotion towards one another. People who become caught up in the American Dream tend to be obsessed with their own personal gain. This diminishes the social interaction and trust between fellow humans. There is no outlet in the culture of America quite the same as singing love songs towards each other. It does not matter if they are rich or poor, lack of community, trust, and social interaction; lack of songs can lead to lack of love and emotion that is seen in the old songs of Mexico.

The image of the American Dream is bright and shiny. To a young boy in a poor village the thought of power and wealth can dominate over a life of poverty with love and emotion. However, there is poverty in America today as well as in Mexico. The poverty here looks a little different but many migrants and young men find the American Dream to be an illusion. “Most immigrants to America came from villages.

The America that Mexicans find today, at the decline of the century, is a closed-circuit city of ramps and dark towers, a city without God. The city is evil. Turn. Turn” (50). The song of America sings an inviting tune for young men from poor villages. When they arrive though it is not what they dreamed about. The subject of the story can see this. He is trying to come of age in his own way, acknowledging America and the Mexico of old. He is able to look back and forth in relation to the America his father came to for power and wealth and the America that he grew up in. All the while, he watches this migration of poor villages, filled with love and emotion, to a big heartless city, while referring back to his father’s memory of why he came to America and his own memories of growing up in America. “Like wandering Jews. They carried their home with them, back and forth: they had no true home but the tabernacle of memory” (51). The subject of the story is experiencing all of this conflict of culture and trying to compose his own song.

Normal Person: An Analysis of the Standards of Normativity in “A Plague of Tics” 9

David Sedaris’ essay “A Plague of Tics” describes Sedaris’ psychological struggles he encountered in his youth, expressed through obsessive-compulsive tics. These abnormal behaviors heavily inhibited his functionings, but more importantly, isolated and embarrassed him during his childhood, adolescence, and young adult years. Authority figures in his life would mock him openly, and he constantly struggled to perform routine simple tasks in a timely manner, solely due to the amount of time that needed to be set aside for carrying out these compulsive tics. He lacked the necessary social support an adolescent requires because of his apparent abnormality. But when we look at the behaviors of his parents, as well as the socially acceptable tics of our society more generally, we see how Sedaris’ tics are in fact not too different, if not less harmful than those of the society around him. By exploring Sedaris’ isolation, we can discover that socially constructed standards of normativity are at best arbitrary, and at worst violent.

As a young boy, Sedaris is initially completely unaware that his tics are not socially acceptable in the outside world. He is puzzled when his teacher, Miss Chestnut, correctly guesses that he is “going to hit [himself] over the head with [his] shoe” (361), despite the obvious removal of his shoe during their private meeting. Miss Chestnut continues by embarrassingly making fun out of the fact that Sedaris’ cannot help but “bathe her light switch with [his] germ-ridden tongue” (361) repeatedly throughout the school day. She targets Sedaris with mocking questions, putting him on the spot in front of his class; this behavior is not ethical due to Sedaris’ age. It violates the trust that students should have in their teachers and other caregivers. Miss Chestnut criticizes him excessively for his ambiguous, child-like answers. For example, she drills him on whether it is “healthy to hit ourselves over the head with our shoes” (361) and he “guess[es] that it was not,” (361) as a child might phrase it. She ridicules his use of the term “guess,” using obvious examples of instances when guessing would not be appropriate, such as “[running] into traffic with a paper sack over [her] head” (361). Her mockery is not only rude, but ableist and unethical. Any teacher—at least nowadays—should recognize that Sedaris needs compassion and support, not emotional abuse.

These kinds of negative responses to Sedaris’ behavior continue upon his return home, in which the role of the insensitive authority figure is taken on by his mother. In a time when maternal support is crucial for a secure and confident upbringing, Sedaris’ mother was never understanding of his behavior, and left little room for open, honest discussion regarding ways to cope with his compulsiveness. She reacted harshly to the letter sent home by Miss Chestnut, nailing Sedaris, exclaiming that his “goddamned math teacher” (363) noticed his strange behaviors, as if it should have been obvious to young, egocentric Sedaris. When teachers like Miss Chestnut meet with her to discuss young David’s problems, she makes fun of him, imitating his compulsions; Sedaris is struck by “a sharp, stinging sense of recognition” upon viewing this mockery (365). Sedaris’ mother, too, is an authority figure who maintains ableist standards of normativity by taunting her own son. Meeting with teachers should be an opportunity to truly help David, not tease him.

On the day that Miss Chestnut makes her appearance in the Sedaris household to discuss his behaviors with his mother, Sedaris watches them from the staircase, helplessly embarrassed. We can infer from this scene that Sedaris has actually become aware of that fact that his tics are not considered to be socially acceptable, and that he must be “the weird kid” among his peers—and even to his parents and teachers. His mother’s cavalier derision demonstrates her apparent disinterest in the well-being of he son, as she blatantly brushes off his strange behaviors except in the instance during which she can put them on display for the purpose of entertaining a crowd. What all of these pieces of his mother’s flawed personality show us is that she has issues too—drinking and smoking, in addition to her poor mothering—but yet Sedaris is the one being chastised while she lives a normal life. Later in the essay, Sedaris describes how “a blow to the nose can be positively narcotic” (366), drawing a parallel to his mother’s drinking and smoking. From this comparison, we can begin to see flawed standards of “normal behavior”: although many people drink and smoke (especially at the time the story takes place), these habits are much more harmful than what Sedaris does in private.

Sedaris’ father has an equally harmful personality, but it manifests differently. Sedaris describes him as a hoarder, one who has, “saved it all: every last Green Stamp and coupon, every outgrown bathing suit and scrap of linoleum” (365). Sedaris’ father attempts to “cure [Sedaris] with a series of threats” (366). In one scene, he even enacts violence upon David by slamming on the brakes of the car while David has his nose pressed against a windshield. Sedaris reminds us that his behavior might have been unusual, but it wasn’t violent: “So what if I wanted to touch my nose to the windshield? Who was I hurting?” (366). In fact, it is in that very scene that Sedaris draws the aforementioned parallel to his mother’s drinking: when Sedaris discovers that “a blow to the nose can be positively narcotic,” it is while his father is driving around “with a lapful of rejected, out-of-state coupons” (366). Not only is Sedaris’ father violating the trust David places in him as a caregiver; his hoarding is an arguably unhealthy habit that simply happens to be more socially acceptable than licking a concrete toadstool. Comparing Sedaris’s tics to his father’s issues, it is apparent that his father’s are much more harmful than his own. None of the adults in Sedaris’ life are innocent—“mother smokes and Miss Chestnut massaged her waist twenty, thirty times a day—and here I couldn’t press my nose against the windshield of a car” (366)—but nevertheless, Sedaris’s problems are ridiculed or ignored by the ‘normal’ people in his life, again bringing into question what it means to be a normal person.

In high school, Sedaris’ begins to take certain measures to actively control and hide his socially unacceptable behaviors. “For a time,” he says, “I thought that if I accompanied my habits with an outlandish wardrobe, I might be viewed as eccentric rather than just plain retarded” (369). Upon this notion, Sedaris starts to hang numerous medallions around his neck, reflecting that he “might as well have worn a cowbell” (369) due to the obvious noises they made when he would jerk his head violently, drawing more attention to his behaviors (the opposite of the desired effect). He also wore large glasses, which he now realizes made it easier to observe his habit of rolling his eyes into his head, and “clunky platform shoes [that] left lumps when used to discreetly tap [his] forehead” (369). Clearly Sedaris was trying to appear more normal, in a sense, but was failing terribly. After high school, Sedaris faces the new wrinkle of sharing a college dorm room. He conjures up elaborate excuses to hide specific tics, ensuring his roommate that “there’s a good chance the brain tumor will shrink” (369) if he shakes his head around hard enough and that specialists have ordered him to perform “eye exercises to strengthen what they call he ‘corneal fibers’” (369). He eventually comes to a point of such paranoid hypervigilance that he memorizes his roommate’s class schedule to find moments to carry out his tics in privacy. Sedaris worries himself sick attempting to approximate ‘normal’: “I got exactly fourteen minutes of sleep during my entire first year of college” (369). When people are pressured to perform an identity inconsistent with their own—pressured by socially constructed standards of normativity—they harm themselves in the process. Furthermore, even though the responsibility does not necessarily fall on Sedaris’ peers to offer support, we can assume that their condemnation of his behavior reinforces the standards that oppress him.

Sedaris’ compulsive habits peak and begin their slow decline when he picks up the new habit of smoking cigarettes, which is of course much more socially acceptable while just as compulsive in nature once addiction has the chance to take over. He reflects, from the standpoint of an adult, on the reason for the acquired habit, speculating that “maybe it was coincidental, or perhaps … much more socially acceptable than crying out in tiny voices” (371). He is calmed by smoking, saying that “everything’s fine as long I know there’s a cigarette in my immediate future” (372). (Remarkably, he also reveals that he has not truly been cured, as he revisits his former tics and will “dare to press [his] nose against the doorknob or roll his eyes to achieve that once-satisfying ache” [372.]) Sedaris has officially achieved the tiresome goal of appearing ‘normal’, as his compulsive tics seemed to “[fade] out by the time [he] took up with cigarettes” (371). It is important to realize, however, that Sedaris might have found a socially acceptable way to mask his tics, but not a healthy one. The fact that the only activity that could take place of his compulsive tendencies was the dangerous use of a highly addictive substance, one that has proven to be dangerously harmful with frequent and prolonged use, shows that he is conforming to the standards of society which do not correspond with healthy behaviors.

In a society full of dangerous, inconvenient, or downright strange habits that are nevertheless considered socially acceptable, David Sedaris suffered through the psychic and physical violence and negligence of those who should have cared for him. With what we can clearly recognize as a socially constructed disability, Sedaris was continually denied support and mocked by authority figures. He struggled to socialize and perform academically while still carrying out each task he was innately compelled to do, and faced consistent social hardship because of his outlandish appearance and behaviors that are viewed in our society as “weird.” Because of ableist, socially constructed standards of normativity, Sedaris had to face a long string of turmoil and worry that most of society may never come to completely understand. We can only hope that as a greater society, we continue sharing and studying stories like Sedaris’ so that we critique the flawed guidelines we force upon different bodies and minds, and attempt to be more accepting and welcoming of the idiosyncrasies we might deem to be unfavorable.

Analyzing “Richard Cory” 10

In the poem “Richard Cory” by Edward Arlington Robinson, a narrative is told about the character Richard Cory by those who admired him. In the last stanza, the narrator, who uses the pronoun “we,” tells us that Richard Cory commits suicide. Throughout most of the poem, though, Cory had been described as a wealthy gentleman. The “people on the pavement” (2), the speakers of the poem, admired him because he presented himself well, was educated, and was wealthy. The poem presents the idea that, even though Cory seemed to have everything going for him, being wealthy does not guarantee happiness or health.

Throughout the first three stanzas Cory is described in a positive light, which makes it seem like he has everything that he could ever need. Specifically, the speaker compares Cory directly and indirectly to royalty because of his wealth and his physical appearance: “He was a gentleman from sole to crown, / Clean favored and imperially slim” (Robinson 3-4). In line 3, the speaker is punning on “soul” and “crown.” At the same time, Cory is both a gentleman from foot (sole) to head (crown) and also soul to crown. The use of the word “crown” instead of head is a clever way to show that Richard was thought of as a king to the community. The phrase “imperially slim” can also be associated with royalty because imperial comes from “empire.” The descriptions used gave clear insight that he was admired for his appearance and manners, like a king or emperor.

In other parts of the poem, we see that Cory is ‘above’ the speakers. The first lines, “When Richard Cory went down town, / We people on the pavement looked at him” (1-2), show that Cory is not from the same place as the speakers. The words “down” and “pavement” also suggest a difference in status between Cory and the people. The phrase “We people on the pavement” used in the first stanza (Robinson 2), tells us that the narrator and those that they are including in their “we” may be homeless and sleeping on the pavement; at the least, this phrase shows that “we” are below Cory.

In addition to being ‘above,’ Cory is also isolated from the speakers. In the second stanza, we can see that there was little interaction between Cory and the people on the pavement: “And he was always human when he talked; / But still fluttered pulses when he said, / ‘Good- morning’” (Robinson 6-8). Because people are “still fluttered” by so little, we can speculate that it was special for them to talk to Cory. But these interactions gave those on the pavement no insight into Richard’s real feelings or personality. Directly after the descriptions of the impersonal interactions, the narrator mentions that “he was rich—yes, richer than a king” (Robinson 9). At the same time that Cory is again compared to royalty, this line reveals that people were focused on his wealth and outward appearance, not his personal life or wellbeing.

The use of the first-person plural narration to describe Cory gives the reader the impression that everyone in Cory’s presence longed to have the life that he did. Using “we,” the narrator speaks for many people at once. From the end of the third stanza to the end of the poem, the writing turns from admirable description of Richard to a noticeably more melancholy, dreary description of what those who admired Richard had to do because they did not have all that Richard did. These people had nothing, but they thought that he was everything. To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light,

And went without the meat, and cursed the bread…. (Robinson 9-12)

They sacrificed their personal lives and food to try to rise up to Cory’s level. They longed to not be required to struggle. A heavy focus on money and materialistic things blocked their ability to see what Richard Cory was actually feeling or going through. I suggest that “we” also includes the reader of the poem. If we read the poem this way, “Richard Cory” critiques the way we glorify wealthy people’s lives to the point that we hurt ourselves. Our society values financial success over mental health and believes in a false narrative about social mobility.

Though the piece was written more than a century ago, the perceived message has not been lost. Money and materialistic things do not create happiness, only admiration and alienation from those around you. Therefore, we should not sacrifice our own happiness and leisure for a lifestyle that might not make us happy. The poem’s message speaks to our modern society, too, because it shows a stigma surrounding mental health: if people have “everything / To make us wish that we were in [their] place” (11-12), we often assume that they don’t deal with the same mental health struggles as everyone. “Richard Cory” reminds us that we should take care of each other, not assume that people are okay because they put up a good front.

This author also has a clear and direct thesis statement which anticipates the content of their analysis. I would advise them, though, to revise that thesis by ‘previewing’ the elements of the text they plan to analyze. Borylated carboxonium ions based on closo -dodecaborate anions were obtained by studying the interaction of [B 12 H 12 ] 2− with some carboxylic acids (RCOOH, R = CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 , and C 6 H 5 ) in the presence of electrophilic inducers. Several electrophilic inducers were tested, and the best results were achieved with BF 3 *(C 2 H 5 ) 2 O. It was established that, as in the case of closo -decaborate carboxonium derivatives, the process of [1,2-B 12 H 10 O 2 CR] − preparation occurs through the formation of the monosubstituted carboxonium derivative [B 12 H 11 OC(OR′)R] − , where R′ = H and C 2 H 5 . The structures of the tetrabutylammonium salts of the carboxonium derivative ((C 4 H 9 ) 4 N)[1,2-B 12 H 10 O 2 CR] were established with the help of X-ray structure analysis. Comprehensive molecular orbital (MO) analysis was also carried out, and the nature of the interaction between the cluster cage and organic moiety was analysed theoretically.

A $1.7 Million Toilet and Liberalism’s Failure to Build

EZRA KLEIN: From New York Times Opinion, this is “The Ezra Klein Show.”

So the book I’m writing is about why it’s become so hard for Democrats to build in the places where they govern. It’s not that they don’t want to build. Democrats have passed no end of laws putting money towards clean energy and affordable housing and mass transit and much, much more. But when you look into what has happened after those laws passed, the outcomes don’t always match the intentions. Let’s put it that way.

But not that many people do look at what happens after those laws pass. And honestly, I found it kind of radicalizing to follow a bunch of these through to their completion, or their noncompletion. Even pretty wonkish liberals, of which I am one and have been one, we sometimes seem to me like we love weddings, but we don’t have the patience for marriage.

Implementation matters. What happens after the bill passes matters. And across a lot of domains of policy, implementation is not going that well in the places where Democrats govern. And it is creating or worsening real public policy crises.

I’m not the only person who’s been obsessing about these issues. Jerusalem Demsas is a staff writer at The Atlantic, now a rare three-time guest on the show. She and I are always in some kind of running conversation on these themes.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Thanks for having me.

EZRA KLEIN: I’ve been thinking about this piece you wrote a while back about this fight to build more housing on an old golf course in Denver, Colorado, and the way that what came next complicates this question of what we mean when we talk about the government, or who we mean when we talk about the people or what they believe. So can you walk me through what happened there?

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: So there’s a golf course in this neighborhood in Denver called Park Hill. And in 1997, Denver paid the owners of the golf course $2 million to put a conservation easement on the property, which means that it would limit what you could actually do with it.

And then, decades later, a development company bought the defunct golf course for $24 million and wanted to redevelop it into housing and some commercial space, as well. And there is a very contentious battle of whether or not to actually redevelop this into more housing. And the measure loses by a significant margin. I think it’s nearly 20 points.

But it’s weird because those same voters, almost a quarter million Denver voters, supported Jared Polis in the 2022 election. And Jared Polis has made increasing housing supply a core part of his campaign strategy. And then, that year, also, 1.3 million Coloradans voted to dedicate hundreds of millions of dollars to increasing affordable housing in Denver proper.

So I say all that because the same people are ostensibly voting at different levels of government for things that seem contradictory. But I think the real thing that’s going on here is that people, when they’re asked questions at different levels of government, they respond with different parts of themselves.

When you’re asked, hi, would you like to solve this problem of the housing crisis, I recognize that you’re upset about this, we need to have a solution, I’m a governor who’s going to attract this solution with pragmatism, they say, yes, I like this. I want you as my representative in order to solve this problem. I don’t want to get into the minutia because I’m not a city planner or whatever. I want you to solve it.

Versus, when they look at the local level, the only thing they’re asked is, yes or no, should you develop this? They’re not asked, Do you want to solve the housing crisis? They’re asked, all things equal — because what is a few thousand homes really going to do for the housing crisis, not very much — would you want this to change? And they’re like, all things equal, I’d like it to stay the same. Because you’re asking them a different question.

How we define the people really depends on the venue in which we’re meeting them because if you think about yourself, too, it depends what you’re being asked what you’re willing to give up.

EZRA KLEIN: There is a principle believed by many people, sometimes believed by me, that the government that is nearest to the people is the best level of government at which to act, because that is where you get the closest match between representation and democracy. A lot of your work has begun to pick at this question of localism and pick at this question of whether or not that is actually true — or, at least, what is lost when we act that way. So talk a bit about that dimension of it.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Fundamentally, I think the problem with local government is that the reason why people feel generally OK with it is because they have no idea what’s going on, and they’re not actually engaged in the conflict and the very contentious decisions that are happening all the time in their local government. You’re frustrated with your national government because you’re tuned in.

You’re aware that there are very consequential questions going on about abortion, about immigration, about climate. And you see it. You hear about it. You’re engaged in it. And you’re frustrated when things don’t turn out your way. It is a part of the democratic discourse in a way that is not true for lower levels of government.

So as you get lower down and as you get more decentralized, you get less and less attention. The local government’s doing some of the most important, influential decision-making when it comes to people’s quality of life, and they’re not actually being held accountable for it.

So local governments are fundamentally responsible for how land is used in this country. They get a lot of permitting authority for whether or not new houses can come up, what kinds of houses can come up. They get permitting authority about what kinds of energy can come up, energy infrastructure can be used for, what kinds of transit can be used for. Anything you can imagine that can be done with land is decided, basically, at the local level.

And so the problem I have is that we see repeatedly that very few people actually vote for local government. There is a survey called “Who Votes for Mayor?” done by State University, and it looks at 23 million voting records in local elections across 50 cities. And they find that, in 10 of America’s largest cities, turnout doesn’t exceed 15 percent. In Las Vegas, Fort Worth and Dallas, turnout was in the single digits.

And then we have other findings that indicate that the older you are, the much more likely you are to vote. And the people who decide to be a part of local government are also, themselves, self-selecting as people who are already more likely to be involved in government, which means they’re more likely to be wealthy, they’re more likely to be politically connected, they’re more likely to be a homeowner. And all of these things really bias the system.

I remember asking a hyperlocal elected official in a poorer area in D.C. about bike lanes. And they told me that, well, nobody bikes in my area. People just have to drive. It’s just ridiculous. But in their area, there was 20 percent of people who did not even own a car.

So when I think about your question about, Why is there this through-line critique of localism in my work, it’s because I don’t really buy the contention that these individuals are more likely to know what their local community looks like on the questions that are actually relevant for politics. And the way that we have that in democracy is through voting. And if you don’t have people voting for you, I don’t think you have to actually be attuned to their interests.

EZRA KLEIN: Let me talk a bit about a story that I’ve been tracking for my book because I think it gets at a lot of these dynamics. There is, quite famously — there’s been San Francisco Chronicle coverage of it, New York Times coverage of it.

In San Francisco, there’s a part of the city called Noe Valley. Noe is lovely. It is very rich. It has a wonderful farmers market. At that wonderful farmers market, there’s a little park where you can take your kids, and they can play on this tiny slide while you’re getting your extremely expensive produce.

And in this parkish area, this little square, there is plumbing for a toilet. And for a long time, the community has wanted a nice public restroom there. Eventually, the state representative representing that community was able to get the money for that public restroom.

And he got $1.7 million. [LAUGHS] Sorry. He got — sorry, it’s a very funny story, on some level, but very grim. He got $1.7 million from the state.

Then people noticed that this toilet was going to cost $1.7 million, and they got really mad, and it got a bunch of press coverage. And the celebration became a scandal. And the state came in and said, we’re going to claw back this money. This is ridiculous.

So then people began digging into the story, like, What’s going on here? The representative who gets the money says, look, I know this is ridiculous. I know this costs too much money. But this is how much I’m told a toilet costs. And so I’ve got to get you the money. Nobody wants me to get them the money for half of a public restroom.

So then there’s a question of, Well, why does installing a public restroom cost so much money right here? And you begin to get — this answer unspools, which I would call not an explanation but a description of process. And construction costs are very high in San Francisco. And you got to pay, for the city, a higher wage. And there are seven or eight or nine different agencies that need to sign off on this. And it has to go through a design review. And the normal way we would do it is have a design come out, and then we have to do a feedback meeting with the local community to make sure they like the design. And there are just a million things that pile on. And in every point of this pile-on, there are public employee salaries that are coming into the cost of this.

And the rec and park agent who ends up being quoted on this in the media, he’s like, look, this is just our process. But nobody likes the process. Everybody’s mad about it. The members of government are mad about it. And he’s mad about it, too. He’s saying in the paper, listen, if you want it to be cheaper, you can pass some bills to make this cheaper for me. You can pass some laws. You can exempt putting a toilet in from environmental review, which, again, is just extremely funny on some level.

So then you get this war of words back and forth. And the guy notes, look, this isn’t even unusual. We installed toilets that cost about this much in neighboring parts of the city, and nobody cared. It’s really just the press getting involved here that has made everybody so mad.

I tell the story, in part, because I think it gets a dynamic that I keep running into in my reporting, which is that when you follow the line of trying to build things — and certainly in blue areas, which is where I’m focusing — when you follow it down the line, you end up seeing a process that doesn’t seem to make anybody happy. And yet at no point did this end with them reforming the process.

And most of the time, and this was the point of the rec and park director, nobody even knows about the process. And they don’t want to be experts on local procurement and contracting processes. And probably, if you asked them, Do you want there to be a rule in the city that the city has to have a public notice when it’s going to do a development, they would say yes. And on the other hand, they don’t want things to cost as much and take this long.

I’ve come to think of this as a sort of liberalism of the details, where people, they pass the bill. But then, if you follow what’s happening after the bill passes into the details of the governance, it looks completely nuts.

But on the other hand, nobody’s really well incentivized to reform the way government works. It’s a lot of fighting with your own government and fighting with your allies. They would need some kind of mass public outcry that would get them to focus on the structure of government itself. And they don’t have that, either.

And to me, this is actually responsible for a lot of liberalism’s current problems and pathologies. If everybody was happy with what they were getting, and I just didn’t like it, fine. But it is very strange to listen to Gavin Newsom and London Breed and these other people condemn their own government but also not have any real traction on how to change it.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. I think that the problem here, and the reason why this has been so prevalent in blue areas, as you said, is because the coalition of the Democratic Party has so many individual groups with varying concerns, none of which constitute a majority. So you have people who are really focused on the environment, people who are really focused on immigration, people who are really focused on labor, people who are really focused on women’s rights. The list goes on.

And these are often very laudable groups who are fighting for the interests of the people in the public they want to represent. But when their interests end up trading off against one another, there isn’t really someone who can just mediate and say, we don’t want a $1.7 million toilet. And in order not to have a $1.7 million toilet, we need to relax environmental review in this way, and that’s just something you’re going to have to sit with, environmental groups.

The environmental groups won’t stand for that. They’re very afraid, rightfully so, often, in many cases, that if you do something like that, maybe that means a slippery slope towards allowing other things that are environmentally harmful. And so they fight very strongly for their own interests in order to maintain that.

Or you have another situation, where I think this comes into play again, the plethora of government agencies and levels of government that are involved in these decisions. Every single level of government is very afraid and jealous of its own power being taken away. They’re worried that, OK, if we lose control over this now, what if there’s a future situation, maybe not about this toilet but about something else, where we will need this veto power. And of course, every individual feels like, well, my office is pretty efficient. It’s the other guy’s that are the problem.

So you have this endemic issue then, where they have so many points in the process where you have the opportunity to delay and pause, and no points in the process where everyone’s trying to rev up. Even though every individual in this could be the most publicly minded, most publicly oriented person who’s trying to do the right thing, there’s no way to go through dozens of agencies to require detailed review to create all of these processes for public input without taking up the kind of time that would then run up the cost of any project.

And so I think that that is a real problem for blue areas because regulations are costly. And they can be costly for good things. There are a lot of regulations that have saved so many countless lives.

But if we can’t actually do an accounting of which ones are worth the cost for individual types of projects, if we can’t do an accounting of which ones we need to keep, then you’re going to end up with everything costing so much money, with everything taking so much time, and you lose out on a lot of the equity gains that you’re trying to get by maintaining this power.

EZRA KLEIN: One of the interesting things happening in the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act is you’re seeing more of the money for decarbonization infrastructure go to red states. You’re seeing, in particular, a lot of it go to Georgia and Texas.

And Texas has a very anti-renewable streak in it right now. There are a lot of bills and regulations being proposed to make it harder to build renewable energy in the state. And at the same time, because it is so damn easy to build things in Texas, more renewable infrastructure is being built there.

Defaults are really important. And so in a lot of my work around this sort of liberalism that builds a set of issues, I’ve come to understand the basic issue is the problem in the blue states is the default is set to make things hard, even when the politics want to make it easy.

It’s a very strange way to watch government playing out. And I think it often offends a lot of our ideological intuitions. But when you see it enough, you gotta, at some point, be like, there’s a real problem here.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: I think a good example of this is in Pennsylvania when there was the I-95 catastrophe last year. And they had to stop traffic on one of the highest arterial interstates in the country. Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat in a purple state, he relaxed and paused a ton of different types of regulations and said, we’re going to streamline this extremely quickly, and we’re going to get this built. And it took 12 days to get I-95 back and operational.

And so I think this tells us something important. It tells us a couple of things. One is that when the person who is responsible for a salient catastrophe is actually empowered to wade through the morass of regulations and different bodies to get something done, they can. That means we have the capacity to get something done when it’s important to us.

This is most obviously happening in the housing space, where you have tons and tons of regulations that have been behind the scenes for a really long time, doing a lot of work to prevent the construction of much-needed housing. And people got really, really mad about that outcome. They got really, really mad about high housing costs. They got really, really mad about the fact that their kids can’t live near them. They got very angry about how homeownership was really out of grasp. They watched homelessness spike out of control in many of these urban areas.

And that pressure caused government to have to respond. And it’s caused them to have to respond in a way that is addressing, in some places, many of the very minutia that we’re talking about here.

In Montana, after Covid-19 caused a lot of people to move to the state, spiking home prices, you had the Republican governor and Republican legislature address the problem. In Colorado, as I talked about, Jared Polis is trying to do this, in California where it has been multiple reforms, and I think often unnoticed, is in Washington State, which is a liberal state where Jay Inslee and a coalition of folks in the legislature have worked very hard to try to undo, bit by bit, these regulations that are stopping the construction of affordable housing.

I think, of course, it’s notable that red states have been able to take the largest steps the most quickly. I think Montana is a really good example of that. But at the same time, I do think that the problem is bigger in blue states. There are more expensive cities. There’s been more people in these places for longer. It’s only now that we’re seeing a lot of growth heading towards the southwest and the South, in general, where you have these red states having to confront these problems in a way that they haven’t had to do for decades.

So I think there’s a lot of correct criticism that I and other people level at blue governments. But at the same time, I do think that, even though Republicans have had a more lax approach towards permitting and towards regulation, they also haven’t had to deal with the problem.

EZRA KLEIN: I’m delighted you brought up I-95 in Pennsylvania because I’ve been doing a lot of reporting on that for the book, actually. And it’s an interesting, I think, case for us to have spent a couple minutes on. So I spent some time talking to Mike Carroll, who’s the secretary of transportation there, and just going through what actually happened and what they did.

And you mentioned that Governor Shapiro was able to relax and pause a bunch of rules. What he was able to do was declare a state of emergency. There had been a tanker with more than 8,000 gallons of fuel. It overturned. It set on fire. And then the bridge above it collapsed.

And in declaring that state of emergency, the normal procurement rules, the normal contracting rules, the normal going out for comment rules, the normal ways you might sue or have to do environmental review, all of that got swept away. So Mike Carroll told me that he got the call that this had happened. He makes his way to the bridge as fast as he can.

And not far from him are two contractors who are already doing work in that area. And basically, by the day’s end, he has chosen these two contractors to manage the demolition and the rebuild. And he could only do that because all of this got waived.

I said, how long would that have normally taken you? And he said to me that the normal way — and here, I’m quoting him — so in a traditional delivery of a project, it would be months. We’d hire a consultant to design it. We’d need final design approved by the Federal Highway Administration. Then there would be bidding from interested contractors. Then we’d process the bids. Then we’d issue a contract.

So that would be 12 to 24 months. And he said, that is probably an underestimate because you’d have to do a bunch of things before you got to that point in the process to even get the process off of the ground. It’s not like they threw everything out the door. They used union labor to rebuild this. They had union labor going 24 hours a day, which would not normally be allowed. But again, under the emergency rules, it was allowed.

And so it was not just a huge victory for Shapiro, making him quite popular, or even more popular than he was, it was also a big victory for union labor in Pennsylvania, which it was this great object lesson that the government and the unions can do this amazing thing super fast.

Now, on the other hand, to make the case for process, you can really imagine how, in government — and given our history, or look at any other country’s history with government — if you don’t have pretty rigid rules on who you hire and how, it becomes patronage. It becomes corruption. People get elected, and they give money to their friends, and their friends give them money to get elected. And then you have a corrupt political system.

Who would get contracts in a Trump administration, if the government he ran could give it to whomever he wanted with no review and no rules? And on the other hand, if everybody’s so happy about how this I-95 rebuild went — and Shapiro is happy about it, and Joe Biden said he did an amazing job, and the Biden administration is very happy to tout their role in it — if our emergency processes, on some level, are better than our default processes, isn’t that a problem?

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: I think that that’s something that we have not done in a while is think about the cost of what these processes add and whether they’re worth paying. A lot of these regulations came out of a desire to make sure that the process was equitable. And then, when we see that the process gets slowed down, there’s also a cost. And that cost is disproportionately borne by the populations that we are often most concerned about.

Of course, the procurement process, you’re talking about the potential for corruption. But there’s also just a lot of really good reasons to want to have review, to make sure, hey, are we only ever considering people who are from a certain race or certain background? Are we giving people opportunities from different places? And those are all laudable goals. And I think that, often, when we’re critiquing them, it can sound to other people like you’re saying like, oh, it doesn’t matter, that these impulses are not important.

But the real issue is that we’re not saying, OK, but who gets hurt in a world where we can’t build I-95 back up quickly, if people can’t get to work, if people can’t take their kids to school? It’s not rich people, who can overwhelmingly, now, in this day and age, work remote, or, in a previous age, would not lose their jobs or would have a savings to rely on. It’s poorer people. It’s people from minority backgrounds. It’s people who many of these regulations are attempting to protect.

EZRA KLEIN: As you say, a lot of these processes are built, at some level, to protect groups that — particularly under post-New Deal super-growth liberalism — got just run over. Sometimes literally run over — highways driven right through their communities. And then this whole infrastructure of, I don’t know if you want to call it anti-growth liberalism or new left liberalism or something, but it emerges in the ’60s and ’70s, the ’80s, and grows through to today, where you have all these groups that are using these laws — environmental laws, procurement laws, other things — to stop really bad abuses from happening.

And so now these groups, this is the thing they have that gives them their reason for existing. This is where their power comes from.

So I think this raises two questions. One is this question of, Who do these groups represent? Because when the California government or the federal government thinks about, What are we doing from environmental justice, that doesn’t mean they’re putting together in a room a bunch of people who live in super disadvantaged communities. It means they’re putting together in a room a bunch of people who run environmental justice groups.

But then the other question that I think it raises is a sort of macro/micro problem here. You were getting at it earlier, in Denver. You might want, in order to stop bad developments, to run everything on a project-by-project basis. If you believe the inability to develop quickly is harming people overall, you might want to change the default, even though that gives you more individually bad projects, but you get more housing overall. And that makes houses cheaper. It helps abate homelessness — whatever. And those two things actually do conflict. The tension here is a real tension.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. So on your first question, the government wants to know, What does the Black community want? And they say, well, what are the groups that represent the Black community? So maybe we’ll go to the NAACP. Or they say, we want to learn about environmental justice communities, so they’ll go to the groups that have organized themselves to speak on behalf of that issue.

And you have this question of, OK, is it true that the people in environmental justice communities have actually lent their voice to these organizations? And it’s a very hard question to suss out because I think that many organizations now — and this is coming out of political scientists’ data, Skocpol has research on this that talks about what has happened to nonprofits from membership to management. So we used to be members of these large-scale organizations. And now it’s sort of like, maybe I’ll send $20 to the Sierra Club every month, but I’m not really paying attention to what they’re doing. I just get a calendar at the end of the year.

And so that change in how people interact with these organizations that happened for various reasons lends some kind of skepticism to saying, you’re saying that you speak for this group. What’s your proof of that? And so I think it’s hard because it’s not a question of, oh, do I think these groups are acting in bad faith, because what if you just can’t get those groups to vote? What if you can’t actually reach all those people? What if it costs way too much money to canvas?

So should no one speak for them in that case? That feels wrong. But then again, it feels wrong to have a group saying, hey, I’m speaking for this group, but, actually, I have not even talked to even a 10th of the members of it.

And so I think that that is a very difficult problem. I think it can be solved in a few ways. I think one is that groups should then be held to a high standard of proving their claims, rather than just leaning on representational authority. And what I mean by that is if I am someone who has a poll and I say, well, I know that 70 percent of people agree with this statement, so that’s why we should do it, that’s one type of democratic claim.

The second type is saying, hey, we did the research. Here’s some arguments why I believe it is best for this group in order for us to pass policy X. Those are two different arguments. That does not rest on whether or not people agree with you. It’s just saying, I think it’s better for them, based on these measures, based on this research, based on these arguments. And so I think we should, A, really default more towards the second when we don’t have evidence that the first is actually happening.

And then, on your second question about the macro/micro problem, many of the biggest successes of the environmental movement, when we’re talking about acid rain or you’re talking about D.D.T. and even lead remediation, these are situations where the environmental movement set specific standards and said, we need to stop this thing from happening. They just said, this is bad. We need to stop it. Here’s a standard for which everyone is going to be held across the board. It doesn’t matter. That’s just the rule now.

And that’s very different than, let’s examine each one and look at it holistically and decide whether or not it’s good or not. It’s just setting a specific rule. And when I talk to developers, they often tell me that they’re less interested, even, in really loosening and making it easier to build more housing or even to build different kinds of renewable energy. They just want a consistent set of rules that they can just follow. Because when these groups have certainty about how the system works, when it’s clear that it’s not going to come to the discretion of some random agency here or some bureaucrat there, and you don’t have to worry that one person’s public input or a group claiming to speak for some other community is going to come in and then derail the whole thing, then you can say, OK, we’re going to try, and we’re going to be able to build a lot more things much more quickly. So I think that standards should just be the focus of future regulatory changes in this space.

EZRA KLEIN: Well, this also gets to a way that liberalism in America — and, actually, just government in America — works differently and is held accountable differently than it is in other countries we think of as peers, like Western European countries and Canada, which is a lot more of how this works in America is by lawsuit. Here, we have a lot of legislation at the both state and federal level where the enforcement mechanism is we have given private or local groups, or people, a clear pathway to suing the government. And that creates very different dynamics.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. So in 1970, the National Environmental Policy Act is passed — NEPA. Then a bunch of state versions of that get passed, as well. And it basically is a very short bill. And all it says is that the government basically needs to account for all the potential environmental harms before it approves of a project.

And at the time it was thought of, all you have to do is look at this project that you’re going to approve or this government that you’re going to do. Let’s spend a little bit of time thinking about whether this is harmful, maybe adjust some things and then move forward.

And then there’s a lot of activist courts in the 1970s who interpret the language of this bill in a much larger way. They say it’s not just that you have to give us a four-page document that says, here are a couple of things that we were worried about and we thought about, and we changed some things, whatever. You have to really show that you were thinking through the entire process, that you were thinking very clearly about potential alternatives at every step.

And that sounds really good. You’re like, yes, I do want the government to not just do some shoddy check mark at the end of the process. I want them to really care about the environment.

But what this ends up meaning is that when government tries to do anything, it has to assemble reports that can number into the thousands. And this doesn’t happen with every project. But it does give room for people to sue not on the grounds that you have harmed the environment or they think you’re going to harm the environment but on the grounds that you have not actually done the procedure well.

So you have many of these lawsuits against things that we would obviously think are bad, whether it’s new pipelines or oil fields or whatever it is, and they’re not really making the argument on the environmental grounds. They’re making the argument on procedural grounds. And so you have all of these environmental organizations come up in this space of legal practice in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, who make this their bread and butter.

And they develop all this case law that really makes government accountable to making sure that they are following a really strict procedure. And it can take years. It can cost tons of money. It can take a lot of lawyers. And so I do think that the legal system here plays a huge role.

But at the same time, it would be very possible for legislatures to say, this is not what we meant for you to do. We did not mean to hamper government to this extent. We’re going to reform what this legislation is saying to make it clear what the parameters are and make it clear who’s allowed to sue and under what conditions.

And so this is something that happened in Minnesota State House. They’re trying to reform one of their state environmental statutes, MERA, the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act, in order to make sure it doesn’t allow for some of these lawsuits to come about that can often not be focused on environmental concerns but using the procedural aspect of environmental litigation in order to get something else done.

EZRA KLEIN: I was really stunned when I began digging into these laws over the past couple of years to realize that they were about the process by which you build something and what you consider in it and not showing that the thing you’re trying to build is better for the environment than not building it.

Congestion pricing in New York City has been held up for quite some time. It’s moving forward now. And I ended up talking to a bunch of the players in that. And this was an extraordinary situation where it got — it’s a very simple thing. You’re just hanging sensors on poles, more or less, in order to charge cars coming in and out of the city, so there are fewer cars. And then you give that money to mass transit, so there’s more mass transit. It’s about as purely pro-environmental an approach as you can imagine.

And this is the blue government of New York who’s trying to do it. And they’re working, now, with the Biden administration, which also wants to do it. And they end up in this multiyear environmental assessment because they want to make sure they don’t get sued. And so they’re doing things like, how many cab drivers of color might be displaced by something like this?

And it’s not even that the considerations are bad considerations, but the fact that it is holding up a very pro-environment piece of legislation, that’s actually not considered in the thing at all. The fact that the very process you’re going through might itself be bad for the environment is nowhere in the analysis.

There’s also just a very strange version of this in California, to keep going back to that. And Jake Anbinder, the historian, has done really fantastic work on this. But in California, they passed CEQA, the California Environmental Quality Act, based on the national version, NEPA.

And when they pass it, nobody thinks it’s a big deal. This is passing in the heyday of environmental legislation. It doesn’t even get a full write-up, a full article, in the L.A. Times. It’s signed by Ronald Reagan. Nobody thinks it matters much at all. It’s like, yeah, when the state does something, they need to consider the environmental impact of it.

But then there’s an effort to build a mixed condo and commercial development in Mammoth. And if you know California, Mammoth is the greatest place to snowboard and ski there is. It’s beautiful. It’s a resort. And this local coalition of homeowners in Mammoth, they sue. And they sue in this very novel way, where they go to the courts and say, this needs an environmental impact review.

And the assumption is, no, it doesn’t. It’s not a state or public project. But the California Supreme Court, they reinterpret the law and say, actually, a public project is anything that requires public permits, which almost everything does.

And so now, the law means something totally different than anybody had initially believed. There’s a complete shutdown, in many ways, of construction. The state legislature has to pause the law so people can figure out what this means for a little bit. And now, that same law has made it much harder to cite housing, much harder to cite clean energy. Now people are seeing some problems with it. But it is a kind of crazy situation of how powerful the judicial role often is in this.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. I think that people would be, maybe, surprised to realize that what’s contained within environmental considerations can literally, basically, be anything from, as you said, noise to locals. It could include public input processes because much of environmentalism became very intertwined with concerns about participatory democracy.

And so you’re making sure, well, did you just put one posting here, or did you put several postings in high-visibility areas in town? What was the size of the font on those postings? There’s so many considerations under the umbrella of environmentalism.

And what has happened is that a bunch of different actors have realized that, actually, you could use this for anything. You could use this to stop anything, no matter whether or not it is environmental. Now, I think there are a lot of people who consider themselves environmentalists who use these regulations to stop things that I would think are good. But then there are a lot of people who are straightforwardly not environmentalists who would use this.

There was, in Los Angeles, the L.A. City Council had voted to end oil drilling. And a privately held natural gas and oil company sued under the California Environmental Quality Act. And they’re claiming that banning oil drilling in the lawsuit will increase greenhouse gas emissions. And they say that L.A. is depriving the public of an opportunity to meaningfully comment on the measure and its feasibility.

And they pause. They’re able to pause the city council’s ban on oil drilling as a result of the California Environmental Quality Act. So I think that that’s, obviously, a really absurd version of this, but I think it really just speaks to how far away these laws have grown from the original intent.

EZRA KLEIN: This gets, to me, to this reality that there are two failure modes for this kind of liberal governance. And one is a failure mode where a law is being used to do something you did not mean for it to do. I think the people who passed these laws did not mean to allow the oil drilling company to stop the oil drilling ban.

And then there’s a failure mode of there’s actually a disagreement, a deep disagreement, in liberalism now over what to do. And you talk about this quite a bit in your piece about Minnesota, about this tension in environmentalism between those who are there for conservation and those who are there for the climate crisis. Do you want to talk a bit about that?

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah, sure. So the Minneapolis 2040 was this larger measure that tried to reshape how Minneapolis would do zoning and land use policy for housing in the future. And it spurred a bunch of changes that would make it easier to build more affordable-housing-type smaller houses, build more densely, near transit, things like that, and led to the elimination of parking minimums, so things that a lot of environmentalists had been really pushing for for a long time.

A lot of environmentalists in the area, including the local Sierra Club, had been very in favor of this. But then a few groups that were led by a newly formed group called Smart Growth but accompanied by two bird groups, including the local Audubon chapter, sued under the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act in order to stop the Minneapolis 2040 from taking effect.

And so when I first wanted to write the story, I was kind of like, OK, there’s this problem of people saying they’re environmentalists but, obviously, they’re not. And then I’d been doing a lot of reading of this law professor, Jedediah Purdy. And as you mentioned, Jake Anbinder has written about this a lot, too. And I started thinking a lot about how these individuals, it’s not that they themselves are lying about environmentalism, but the definition of environmentalism has changed around them.

So what I mean by that is that I kind of classify people into two groups, this idea of crisis environmentalists and cautious environmentalists. And if you’re like me, and I think like you, Ezra, you grew up with environmentalism as really meaning the climate crisis. You learned about deforestation, and you learned about wildfires and hurricanes and polar bears, all of these things under the blanket crisis of, we need to reduce carbon emissions to stop all of this from happening.

Younger folks also grew up in a more pro-technological version of this, too, where we were saying, OK, we need to ride our bikes. We need to get solar panels on our roofs. It was very technical. It was return to the city, as well, too, many people who were urbanists. But that’s a very different culture than what environmentalism was for a lot of people in the cautious space.

So cautious environmentalists grew up there in the ’60s and ’70s. And those are the people that really populated these groups that are suing to stop this housing legislation. And for them, what they were thinking about when they thought about environmentalism was the changes to their local places, whether there would be less literal greenery around, whether there would be knock-on effects of specific developments. And also this real commitment as part of environmentalism to slow, to process and to distrusting government when it tried to do big projects because of the legacy of what big government had done with knocking highways through and urban renewal in the mid-20th century.

And so when I think about that kind of tension, what I realized really clearly when talking to them is that, while I think that they’re wrong — I think there’s a better version of environmentalism, and I think that it helps more people and that their version hurts more — that they have very clear values that they view as very much in line with their version of environmentalism.

And that makes it, actually, much more difficult because it’s not a simple question of saying, well, don’t you realize that the net carbon emissions if everyone was going to live in a single-family home versus living in a more densely packed area are higher? That’s not the answer. They’re not going to be won by facts. It’s about a values shift that we’re seeing happen as generations trade over.

EZRA KLEIN: Yeah. I don’t even love the language of lying or wrong or right here because there are genuinely different visions about how life should work. This is a bad coinage for my side of the argument, but I tend to think of this as gray and green environmentalism.

There is an environmentalism that is largely about living in a greener space. Don’t let anybody build over the park. Don’t let that much building happen at all. This environmentalism is often associated with fears of overpopulation. There’s simply too many humans. The humans are consuming too many things. The Earth cannot carry this much. Do not let anybody bulldoze these trees. And there’s a lot to that. And I am, emotionally, very sympathetic to it.

And then gray environmentalism, the environmentalism of New York City, where the carbon footprint per person is extraordinarily low, if you want to be low carbon, low emissions, what you want to live in is a very large, probably gray building, not that the building has to be gray. It can be any color. But a lot of them are gray.

And the city doesn’t feel green at all. The city does not feel like environmentalism. It doesn’t feel like living a life in harmony with nature. And there is, I think, a difference of class here. I do think one of the problems is a lot of people want to protect a green life they have been able to afford but that other people now need to live somewhere, and they don’t really have an answer for that.

The lifestyles the two sides are thinking of, I think, actually feel like different lives. They live in different houses. That’s also, again, a financial question. But there is a question of values here that I think can’t be waved away.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Well, I’m going to push back again against this gray versus green thing, I think, for a couple reasons. One is one thing you said about, well, it doesn’t feel environmental to live in New York City, I think that people who ride their bikes to work and who are living in a downtown city and don’t have a car, I think they very much feel themselves like they’re living in a very environmental way, that they are able to take the train and go out into the suburbs if they want to.

EZRA KLEIN: I’m using the term differently, not to go too far down this road. I mean when I lived in a leafy part of Oakland for a while, when I walked around, there were a lot of trees. I lived for 10 weeks in Half Moon Bay on the shore. I woke up, and I saw the ocean.

And now I live in a five-story building. And there are very few trees around me. And there’s no wild space. I actually do feel like I’m a better environmental citizen now, for all those reasons. But I don’t feel the connection with nature I felt when I’ve lived in places that just, literally, my carbon emissions and my electricity usage were higher.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. There’s no contesting that. Of course, if you’re in the middle part of New Manhattan, you’re not going to see — or in Brooklyn — you’re not going to see the ocean in the same way on the coast.

But I also will say this, that the sense that you have of feeling connected to nature or feeling close or in harmony with nature, as you said, these things are socially determined. The way you feel about your life and how it is — the reason I’m slightly pushing back on this is not because I don’t recognize the difference but because I think that it’s socially constructed in a way that we can actually change.

What people often don’t recognize is that when you live more densely is that you are actually preserving a ton of that green space from development because when Minneapolis says, I’m not going to build enough for my new residents, when they say 30,000 people move here, but we’re only building 10,000, 12,000 new homes, those people don’t disappear. They still get those jobs. They still come here to live with their family or to visit with their friends or whatever it is. And where they need to stay goes to the outlying counties. They are taking up more and more wetlands or conservation areas that are very local, still, to these communities. And so that single-family home sprawl that exists and has continued to spread in major urban areas is the direct result of not allowing dense infill development to happen in our cities.

And so, to me, I think it’s really interesting, because I agree with you, it changes how individuals feel because if you’re someone who is used to having your single-family home, and you’re in Minneapolis, and you’re seeing all this greenery, and all these trees, and all these parks around you, and it takes 10 minutes for you to get to this wildlife preserve, and that changes because it becomes a more populated place, maybe your day-to-day feels less what you would call green environmentalism, as you’re saying, but your community is actually preserving a ton more of that greenery.

So I think there’s a lot of contradictions inherent in this that, I think, are often resolved in a way that it’s not logical. It’s just what we all decided it to be.

EZRA KLEIN: I agree with that totally. And I will say that one thing New York City does well, at least in certain parts of it, is the density has also permitted these tremendous public parks. If you pack more people together, you can also have just bigger parks. And Prospect Park is a remarkable institution. Central Park is a remarkable institution. There are things you can do here that, I think, can lead you to more of a synthesis than people recognize.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: And I was talking to someone in my story in Minneapolis, where he said he likes Minneapolis because of all of the parks and greenery. And he says, well, I don’t want to live in a place like D.C. or New York. But D.C. actually has a higher-rated park system than both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, which have great parks — I was there. And they do it while — here in D.C., we do it while permitting more homes than they do in Minneapolis. And I think that that’s something that’s really counterintuitive for people.

EZRA KLEIN: I think that’s totally right. But when you think about the broad sweep of liberalism here, for decades, this liberalism that was — and particularly, this environmentalism — that was much more about the cost of building too much. And it had real reasons to worry about that, as you said. That built a lot of structures. It built statutes. It built movements. It built organizations. It built local government processes.

And now you have this other thing emerging. And one thing I’m tracking is that it’s, actually, very hard to change. So when you look at California, they have passed a huge number of pro-housing bills, attacking all different levels of the system. And if you look at housing starts in California, you can squint and see a bit of an effect, but there’s not been any transformation.

I was looking at Colorado, where Jared Polis has been doing a lot of work on this. Same thing — you’re not seeing any transformation. I’ve looked at New York. Same thing — you’re not seeing any transformation.

So this stuff is actually pretty hard to unwind.

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: Yeah. If we were having this conversation 10 or 15 years ago, Ezra, we would be having it in a diagnosing a futile illness sort of way. The way that political scientists talked about this problem, the way that activists or people talk about this problem, for decades before was in a very resigned tone. They’re like, this is just the way that it is. It’s over. We’ve lost this. This is going to be a problem for a really long time. That was the posture towards this entire problem.

And so the reason why I’m a little optimistic here is that I’m just shocked that, basically, any major legislation has been passed on this issue. And it happened pretty rapidly over the course of the last few years. 2020 was a real catalyst year, when the rest of the country began seeing the real impact of the run-up in housing costs. And their local restrictions became very relevant as they started experiencing that population growth.

And I do think that is the beginning of how change actually works, that you have environmental organizations, including Sierra Club chapters, that, historically, have been some of the largest barriers in certain areas to trying to get some of these laws changed, now on the same side as people who are trying to make it easier to build more housing and relax some of these environmental regulations. I think that there’s a real potential shift happening here.

Do I know that this is going to actually win out? No. I think there are a lot of strong forces arrayed against it. There’s just an asymmetry towards getting things done versus towards opposing it. In order to get something done on this question, you have to align so many different groups. You have to align so many different interests. You have to get real champions to take on political risks in order to do this and to work against the people that they’re usually in coalitions with.

It is not an easy thing to do. But given that the expectation just a few years ago is that very little would ever get done on this issue, I do feel optimistic.

EZRA KLEIN: All right. Here’s hoping. Always our final question — what are three books you’d recommend to the audience?

JERUSALEM DEMSAS: So my first two books are very much on these questions of how we got here. How did we see all these regulations come up, and what changed within liberalism in the latter half of the 20th century?

The first is by Lily Geismer. It’s called “Don’t Blame Us.” And it’s a book that looks very closely at the Boston suburbs to see the changes that led to a lot of the regulations and opposition that is causing a lot of the sclerosis we see today.

And then there’s “The Bulldozer in the Countryside” by Adam Rome. It’s another really great book about environmentalism and really situates environmentalism in the United States as coming up as a reaction to changes in the urban core and suburbanization, that that is really the catalyzing force for how it gets so many adherents is that suburbanites really get concerned about the change in their communities.

The final book — I always like to recommend a fiction book on this — well, it’s not really fiction — but George Saunders’s book, “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” is a book on writing. But all really great books about writing are, actually, great books about thinking. And so that one is one I read recently that has really helped change my writing process but also, I think, fortify some of how I think through problems.

EZRA KLEIN: All great books about writing are really great books about thinking. I love that.
