Wellness is about consistency.

When you hear the term "wellness," what comes to mind? At a high level, wellness refers to healthy habits we partake in on a regular basis. From the food we choose to nourish our bodies with to the physical exercise we put our bodies through and even mental health practices like meditation, wellness is the act of keeping our mind and body well.

While social media and the age of the internet have made wellness more mainstream, wellness is actually a concept rooted in ancient history. In fact, the first holistic practices can be traced back to ancient civilizations in the East and West. 

These early practices focused on natural remedies and preventative care, which have grown and evolved into the wellness movement and holistic health practices we're familiar with in the present day. 

Why are the multiple dimensions of wellness so essential to know and practice today? In this article, we'll explore the components of wellness, why it's important and how to adopt effective wellness practices that improve your overall health and wellbeing. 

What does wellness mean?  

According to The Global Wellness Institute , wellness is defined as "the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health."

These activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to an ideal state of health can be broken down into six key dimensions of wellness:

Physical wellness

Physical wellness encompasses the habits and routines you choose and adhere to that impact your physical state.

This includes the type of exercise you incorporate, your decisions regarding your nutritional health, and the amount of sleep you get per night.

Environmental wellness

The environment you choose to live and exist in impacts your overall health. This includes how you keep your home and office and the natural environments you visit and the habits you exhibit that impact it—for example, your relationship with the planet and your carbon footprint.

Social wellness  

The people you choose to surround yourself with directly impact your personal wellness. Social wellness refers to the ways you connect with others and what those connections mean to you. This can include connecting on social networks and in real life. 

Spiritual wellness

The religion you practice, your connection with a higher power and the continuous search for purpose and meaning in life are part of spiritual wellness.

Mental wellness

This can include bettering yourself through therapy. Mental wellness also describes the lens through which you engage with the world, the way you express yourself creatively and how you process problems and come to resolutions.

Emotional wellness

Emotional wellness doesn't just pertain to your own emotions but learning to empathize and understand the feelings of others as well. 

Wellness vs. Wellbeing

Though these two terms are often used interchangeably, it's essential to understand the difference between wellness and wellbeing.

A few key differences include:

Wellness is an ongoing action or journey. Wellbeing is a perceived state of being. 

Wellness encompasses healthy choices and lifestyles. Well-being embodies feelings of happiness and satisfaction. 

Wellness pertains to our physical state. Well-being leans more on our emotional and mental state.

How wellness differs from health care

Prioritizing wellness is an active process of self care, and practicing this can improve our health. But the practices that wellness embodies do not necessarily fall exclusively under health care. Why is this? 

Healthcare systems reactively approach health. Meaning they seek to identify the cause of a symptom once the symptom occurs.

Wellness, however, focuses on proactively treating the body, mind and spirit through healthy living, focusing on preventing symptoms and diseases in the first place. 

How to improve your state of wellness

It's important to understand that everyone's wellness journey looks different. There's no one size fits all approach to finding the right wellness resources to fit your lifestyle. Here are a few key areas to focus on during your journey toward good health. 

What we put into our body is what we'll get out of it. In other words, you are what you eat. Finding the right nutrition plan to support your body's unique needs can be challenging to navigate -- especially in today's crowded landscape. 

One way to get started is to try incorporating more wholesome ingredients into each meal you eat. Adding a serving of vegetables to each meal is one easy way to begin your journey. Making sure you have healthy snacks available to you throughout the day (cut up fruit, raw veggies, or a handful of nuts) can also help cut back cravings and keep you on track to make more healthy decisions. 

Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness is a powerful way to improve mental and emotional wellness. Being mindful has been associated with many health benefits and can even improve focus. If you're not sure where to start, pause for a moment and reflect on how you're currently feeling. 

Paying close attention to how we react to stress can be a powerful tool in the long term. The more you're mindful of how you're feeling, the further you'll be able to improve your mental wellness.

Getting enough sleep is often easier said than done – but it's a vital part of improving overall well being. If you're not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night, start making small changes before bed to improve this. 

Try to limit screen time to an hour before you're planning to go to bed. Make sure your sleep environment is one that's calming. If possible, limit your caffeine intake to early morning hours. All of these small changes can lead to significant differences during your wellness journey. 

Social connections

Depending on your work schedule and personal situation, you may feel like you have enough social connections to maintain social wellness throughout the day. However, taking time to stay connected with friends and family members you don't see regularly enforces our sense of community and helps us feel supported when stressful life events arise. 

If you're someone who tends to feel exhausted by social interactions, start with minor changes. Aim to give one friend or family member a call for 10 minutes once per week. If you're concerned this call may eat up too much of your time, be sure to have an exit strategy. But chances are, if they're someone who's important to you, you'll find yourself wanting to chat for longer than you initially thought. 

Exercise doesn't have to mean lifting heavy weights or running long distances. In fact, just 20 or 30 minutes of activity per day can have a positive impact. If you're just easing your way back into an exercise routine, taking a brisk walk or parking further away from a store entrance when running errands can be easy ways to get started. 

As you progress in your journey, explore online workouts and resources that can help you identify the type of exercise that works best for your wellness goals. With workouts that incorporate dance movements and even boxing moves, there are many options that don't feel like "work" that can help support your endeavors. 

The wellness movement is currently flourishing – which means there's never been a better time to decide to better your holistic health. Wellness is not something that occurs overnight or gets completed after a certain amount of work. 

Wellness is an ongoing, evolving process that involves bettering all parts of ourselves: physical, mental and emotional, in order to unlock our full potential and allow us to feel fully engaged with the individuals we surround ourselves with and the environments we thrive in. Staying motivated during your wellness journey is critical. 

The key to improving is to stay consistent in implementing these healthy habits. If you’re able to continually focus on habits that improve your mental and physical wellness, you’ll reap the full benefits of holistic health in no time. It was a tough day for employees at Keke’s Snow Balls in Texas when an angry woman approached the window. She had placed a pickup order for a snow cone and because of a shift change, the snow cone wasn’t ready. Two days later, the customer came back and demanded a refund of $6.

A girl named Victoria was working the counter and listened to the woman’s complaints. According to Inside Edition , it was immediately clear this woman didn’t want to resolve things in the right way, and was trying to pick a fight. Another employee named Kaeley overheard it all.

“I was just listening in the back and, eventually, I could just hear she’s angry the whole time. So I was like, clearly she just wants to have a problem,” Kaeley recalled to the publication. “And I’m not about that, so I was like, ‘Okay let me just go give her $6 and we can move on, move past this.’ It was $6.”

An Unexpected Turn

At that point, the situation should have been resolved. However, Kaeley noticed the sign outside the window had fallen over during the dispute. So, she opened the window to fix it. That’s when the woman came by, slapped the sign out of the 17-year-old girl’s hand, and called her a derogatory name.

“M’am, please don’t act like that. You’re a grown woman,” Kaeley responded in a video that the restaurant then posted to TikTok . “You’re a grown woman. I’m 17. Get out of here. Don’t come back. Don’t come back. We don’t need your business.”

“I was scared and very confused,” Victoria added. “I wasn’t understanding what was going on.”

A Brilliant Online Reaction

After the owner posted the video online, it went viral and many people reached out to support the girls for their perfect reaction to the customer.

“People were traveling to come and see us from hours away,” the owner, Kyle, told Inside Edition . “We had people reaching out to us on TikTok asking how to tip the girls. We even had people going and leaving Google reviews that haven’t even been to the shop, saying they’re so proud of the girls and how they dealt with it,” he continued.

Kyle explained that he posted the video to remind everyone that the employees behind the counter are people, too. Adults, in particular, should try to remember that oftentimes, these are kids working to save up for cars, school, and other big life steps.

“Mistakes happen, but for you to go up and act like that as an adult, my whole point in uploading that video is to simply remind us all that we need to treat people better,” Kyle added.

"I am proud of the way our supervisor handled the situation," he added in the initial post . "We must strive for better behavior and respect in all interactions. It’s all about just being a kind person and approaching every situation with willingness to come to a good resolution."

We Are All the Same

As Kyle himself said, mistakes happen and no one is perfect. But demanding perfection of others can be a very lonely way to live. Rather than getting upset over an honest mistake and making someone feel bad or yelling at them, lead with grace and understanding. Not only will you help someone else feel respected, but you’ll probably get a better result from the situation, too.

When life doesn’t go our way, it can be easy to overreact or blame someone else. But by remembering that mistakes happen and this too shall pass, we can all live a little more peacefully.

Many of us are in these jobs because we’re trying to provide for our families or ourselves and our futures. Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday without fail, Inez Hudson can be found stationed outside Super Choice Foods supermarket in Lakeland, Florida.

The 73-year-old woman sells homemade pies and cakes to support herself as her fixed income isn't enough to cover her living expenses.

She has her good days and bad days. That is, until now. Because thanks to the kindness of a stranger and the power of social media she just became a viral sensation. And now? Her baked goods are selling like hotcakes.

Inez has been setting up shop outside her local grocery store since November 2018, frequently rising at midnight to start baking. Her specialties include pecan pie, sweet potato pie, pineapple pound cake, and red velvet cake with cream cheese icing.

Recently, Lakelander resident, Mannie (who posts on TikTok as @mannierants), came across Inez selling her cakes in the blistering Florida heat.

In a now-viral video , Mannie zooms in on her small business, consisting of a tray table and footstool draped in white tablecloths and covered in baked goods.

"I love sweet potato pie. I would like to get two," the TikToker tells her.

Mannie starts counting out the money...and doesn't stop...completely emptying his wallet as Inez cries with gratitude.

"I don't know what your challenge is. I wish I had more, I wish I had more. I want this to be bigger for you. I want more people to come and support you, I really do." - Mannie told Inez

However, Mannie didn't just wish it; the TikToker did something about it, putting a call out on social media.

"I don't know her, neither her situation," the text overlay reads. "But my heart says she needs our support. If you're able to please stop by if you're in Lakeland Fl. It will be greatly appreciated."

Mannie tells Fox13 New s that he wasn't looking for fame. He just wanted to help a grandma out and support local.

“That’s the main reason why I made it. Not to go viral for social media purposes. I just wanted local people to support each other because that’s the best rewarding experience."

A TikTok Video Goes Viral

It worked! Mannie's post took off, garnering more than 800,000 views and nearly 6,000 comments.

People from all over the area, and even beyond, started making the trip to Super Choice Foods to buy Inez's baked goods. And they keep on coming.

Her long-time friends are beyond thrilled for her as they know how tough it's been financially.

"I shared with her, God said, ‘stop worrying.' Trust Him and he's going to make things go to where you're not going to have to stress," said one friend, Jamie Overstreet. "Gradually, more people are coming, and to hear it's going viral, ah! That's so exciting!"

Now the only thing Inez has to worry about is selling out.

While the elderly woman is excited about the uptick in customers, she does admit her newfound fame makes her a bit nervous. Overall, however, she's ecstatic that all of her hard work is paying off.

Emotional wellness

Emotional wellness involves developing an awareness of your feelings and your response to everyday interactions. This awareness allows you to better understand why you are feeling that way and can actively respond to your feelings.

You can foster your emotional wellness by:

  • Taking time to yourself to quiet your mind and reflect.
  • Smiling and laughing! Sometimes humor is the best medicine to decrease stress and put life’s challenges in perspective.

Physical wellness

Physical wellness is the ability to maintain a quality of life that allows you to get the most out of your daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. Physical wellness recognizes that our daily habits and behaviors have an impact on our overall health, well-being and quality of life.

You can foster your physical wellness by:

  • Finding time to move your body. Try to move your body in a way that increases your heart rate everyday for at least 30 minutes. You can even break up your daily 30 minutes into three ten-minute bouts!
  • Using the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, if you’re able.
  • Learning to recognize warning signs when your body begins feeling ill.
  • Eating foods that make you feel good.
  • Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and get between 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

What is wellness, what is wellness.

Wellness is a modern word with ancient roots. The key tenets of wellness as both preventive and holistic can be traced back to ancient civilizations from the East (India, China) to the West (Greece, Rome). In 19th-century Europe and the United States, a variety of intellectual, religious and medical movements developed in parallel with conventional medicine. With their focus on holistic and natural approaches, self-healing and preventive care, these movements have provided a firm foundation for wellness today. Wellness-focused and holistic modalities have gained more visibility since the 1960s/1970s under the writings and thought leadership of an informal network of US physicians and thinkers (such as Halbert Dunn, Jack Travis, Don Ardell, Bill Hettler, and others). As these have evolved, proliferated, and gone mainstream, they have informed the healthy-living, self-help, self-care, fitness, nutrition, diet and spiritual practices that have become a flourishing wellness movement in the 21st century.

Defining Wellness

The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.

There are two important aspects to this definition. First, wellness is not a passive or static state but rather an “active pursuit” that is associated with intentions, choices and actions as we work toward an optimal state of health and wellbeing. Second, wellness is linked to holistic health—that is, it extends beyond physical health and incorporates many different dimensions that should work in harmony.

Wellness is an individual pursuit—we have self-responsibility for our own choices, behaviors and lifestyles—but it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live.

Wellness is often confused with terms such as health, wellbeing and happiness. While there are common elements among them, wellness is distinguished by not referring to a static state of being (i.e., being happy, in good health, or a state of wellbeing). Rather, wellness is associated with an active process of being aware and making choices that lead toward an outcome of optimal holistic health and wellbeing.

Wellness Is Multidimensional

Wellness is about more than just physical health. Most models of wellness include at least six dimensions (and sometimes up to 9 or 12):

  • Physical: Nourishing a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc.
  • Mental: Engaging the world through learning, problem-solving, creativity, etc.
  • Emotional: Being aware of, accepting and expressing our feelings, and understanding the feelings of others.
  • Spiritual: Searching for meaning and higher purpose in human existence.
  • Social: Connecting and engaging with others and our communities in meaningful ways.
  • Environmental: Fostering positive interrelationships between planetary health and human actions, choices and wellbeing.

The Wellness Continuum

One way to understand wellness is to consider health as a continuum that extends from illness to a state of optimal wellbeing. * On one end, patients with poor health engage the medical paradigm to treat illnesses; they interact reactively and episodically with doctors and clinicians who provide care. On the opposite end, people focus proactively on prevention and maximizing their vitality. They adopt attitudes and lifestyles that prevent disease, improve health, and enhance their quality of life and sense of wellbeing. In other words, wellness is proactive, preventive and driven by self-responsibility. The growth of wellness is the extension of this consumer value and worldview.

Wellness is different from healthcare. Our healthcare systems use a pathogenic and reactive approach, focused on causes, consequences, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries. In contrast, wellness is a salutogenic and proactive approach, focused on prevention, healthy lifestyles and the pursuit of optimal wellbeing. Ultimately, a solid foundation for wellness helps us prevent and overcome disease, both at present and in the future.

Well-being is the experience of health, happiness , and prosperity. It includes having good mental health, high life satisfaction, a sense of meaning or purpose, and the ability to manage stress . Well-being is something sought by just about everyone because it includes so many positive things — feeling happy, healthy, socially connected, and purposeful. Unfortunately, well-being appears to be in decline, at least in the U.S. And increasing your well-being can be tough without knowing what to do and how to do it.

Can You Actually Improve Your Well-Being?

Increasing your well-being is simple; there are tons of skills you can build. But increasing your well-being is not always easy: Figuring out what parts of well-being are most important for you and figuring out how , exactly, to build well-being skills usually require some extra help.

How Long Does It Take to Improve Well-Being?

Usually, when people start consistently using science-based techniques for enhancing well-being or emotional wellness, they begin to feel better pretty quickly. In the studies I've conducted and read, most people show significant improvements within five weeks.

But you have to stick to it. If you are feeling better after five weeks, you can't just stop there.

Why? Well, you probably already know that if you stop eating healthy and go back to eating junk food, then you'll end up back where you started. It turns out that the exact same thing is true for different types of well-being. If you want to maintain the benefits you gain, you'll have to continue to engage in well-being-boosting practices to maintain your skills. So it's really helpful to have strategies and tools that help you stick to your long-term goals — for example, a happiness and well-being plan or well-being boosting activity that you can continue to use throughout your life.

Here's what you need to know:

Where Does Well-Being Come From?

Well-being emerges from your thoughts, actions, and experiences — most of which you have control over. For example, when we think positively, we tend to have greater emotional well-being. When we pursue meaningful relationships , we tend to have better social well-being. And when we lose our job — or just hate it — we tend to have lower workplace well-being. These examples start to reveal how broad well-being is, and how many different types of well-being there are.

Because well-being is such a broad experience, let's break it down into its different types.

5 Major Types of Well-Being

  • Emotional Well-Being. The ability to practice stress- management and relaxation techniques , be resilient , boost self-love , and generate the emotions that lead to good feelings.
  • Physical Well-Being. The ability to improve the functioning of your body through healthy living and good exercise habits.
  • Social Well-Being. The ability to communicate, develop meaningful relationships with others, and maintain a support network that helps you overcome loneliness .
  • Workplace Well-Being. The ability to pursue your interests, values, and life purpose in order to gain meaning, happiness, and enrichment professionally.
  • Societal Well-Being. The ability to actively participate in a thriving community, culture, and environment.

To build your overall well-being, you have to make sure all of these types are functioning to an extent.

Think of it like this: Imagine you are in a car. Your engine works great, and maybe your transmission works pretty well, too, but your brakes don't work. Because your brakes don't work, it doesn't really matter how well your engine works; you're still going to have trouble going about your life.

The same is true for your well-being. If everything else in your life is going great, but you feel lonely , or you're eating unhealthfully, other areas of your life will be affected, and you likely won't feel as well as you want to.

Because each part of well-being is important to your overall sense of well-being, let's talk about how to build each type of well-being:

Emotional Well-Being. To develop emotional well-being, we need to build emotional skills — skills like positivity , emotion regulation , and mindfulness , for example. Often, we need to build a variety of these skills to cope with the wide variety of situations we encounter in our lives. When we have built these emotional well-being skills, we can better cope with stress , handle our emotions in the face of challenges, and quickly recover from disappointments. As a result, we can enjoy our lives a bit more, be happier and pursue our goals a bit more effectively.

Here are some of the skills that research suggests contribute to emotional well-being:

Physical Well-Being. To develop our physical well-being, we need to know what a healthy diet and exercise routine looks like so that we can implement effective strategies in our daily lives. When we improve our physical well-being, not only do we feel better, but our newfound health can also help prevent many diseases, heal our guts , boost our emotional well-being, and limit the number of health challenges we have to deal with in our lives.

Here are some of the things that can help you boost your physical well-being:

  • Eating for Health
  • Detoxing Your Body
  • Correcting Nutritional Deficiencies
  • Removing Plastic From Your Home

​Unfortunately, it's possible to eat healthily but still be unhealthy. We can accidentally miss important foods or nutrients. Or we can overburden ourselves with toxins from plastic or processed food. As a result, we may need to eat additional foods, detox our bodies, or prevent these toxins from entering our bodies again. This is why it's essential to learn about health so that we can make the right changes — those that lead to long-term health and well-being.

Social Well-Being. To develop social well-being, we need to build our social skills, like gratitude , kindness, and communication. Social skills make it easier for us to have positive interactions with others, helping us to feel less lonely, angry, or disconnected. When we have developed our social well-being, we feel more meaningfully connected to others.

Here are some of the skills that research suggests contribute to better social well-being:

  • Practicing Gratitude (for example with a gratitude journal )
  • Building Meaningful Social Connections
  • Managing Your Relationship with Technology

It's important to know that building social well-being is one of the best ways to build emotional well-being. When we feel socially connected, we also tend to just feel better, have more positive emotions, and are able to cope better with challenges. This is why it's essential to build our social well-being.

Workplace Well-Being. To develop our workplace well-being, we need to build skills that help us pursue what really matters to us. This can include building professional skills which help us to meet our life goals and help us manifest things , but it also includes things like living our values and maintaining work-life balance. These skills let us enjoy our work more, helping us to stay focused, motivated, and successful at work. When we have developed workplace well-being, our work, and therefore each day, feels more meaningful .

Here are some of the key skills you need for workplace well-being:

  • Maintaining Work-Life Balance
  • Finding Your Purpose

​Because we spend so much time at work, building our workplace well-being has a big impact on our overall well-being.

Societal Well-Being. To develop societal well-being, we need to build skills that make us feel interconnected with all things. We need to know how to support our environment, build stronger local communities, and foster a culture of compassion, fairness, and kindness . These skills help us feel like we're part of a thriving community that really supports one another and the world at large. When we cultivate societal well-being, we feel like we are a part of something bigger than just ourselves and live happily .

Although each of us only makes up a tiny fraction of a society, it takes all of us to create societal well-being. If each of us did one kind act for someone else in our community, then we would live in a very kind community. Or if all of us decide we are going to recycle, then suddenly we create a world with significantly less waste. In order to live in a healthy society, we too need to contribute to making a healthy society.

Not everyone experiences the same benefits from building their well-being. For example, lots of research suggests that the more motivated you are to build well-being skills, the greater the impact. Perhaps this is not surprising.

Still other research shows that having skills like a growth mindset or a positive attitude can actually help you build your other well-being skills more easily. This is why I tend to encourage people to build these skills first — afterward, you may be able to increase the other types of well-being more easily.

In addition, building well-being skills is perhaps most beneficial for people struggling the most, particularly if they've recently undergone something stressful . It may be harder to build well-being during this time, but the impact may be greater because there is more room for improvement.

There Is No Magic About Building Well-Being

Keep in mind that it takes time and effort to build any new skill set — that includes well-being skills. It's important to be realistic with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish in a given amount of time. Having unrealistic expectations can lead you to give up before you've reached your well-being goals. So it's key to create a realistic plan for your well-being , stick to it, and take small actions every day that add up to big improvements over time.

If you've read my earlier posts, you might know that I too have struggled with aspects of my well-being, particularly with maintaining work-life balance. The truth is, we all struggle, and new struggles can and will pop up, even if you're doing well. But the longer we've worked on strengthening our well-being skills, the easier it is to be resilient, take the actions needed to bounce back, and continue moving forward.

Growing your well-being is a lifelong pursuit, but it is totally worth it.

Dimensions of wellness: Change your habits, change your life

People often think about wellness in terms of physical health — nutrition, exercise, weight management, etc., but it is so much more. Wellness is a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit ( 1 ). Although it always includes striving for health, it’s more about living life fully ( 1 ), and is “a lifestyle and a personalized approach to living life in a way that… allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow” ( 2 ).

Wellness necessitates good self-stewardship, for ourselves and for those we care about and who care about us. For those in the helping professions, such as ourselves in veterinary medicine, wellness is a professional as well as personal responsibility. In order to ensure high-quality patient and client services, we have an ethical obligation to attend to our own health and well-being ( 3 ). Sufficient self-care prevents us from harming those we serve, and according to Green Cross Standards of Self Care Guidelines, no situation or person can justify neglecting it ( 3 ).

Wellness encompasses 8 mutually interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental ( Table 1 ) ( 1 ). Attention must be given to all the dimensions, as neglect of any one over time will adversely affect the others, and ultimately one’s health, well-being, and quality of life. They do not, however, have to be equally balanced ( 1 ). We should aim, instead, to strive for a “personal harmony” that feels most authentic to us ( 1 ). We naturally have our own priorities, approaches, and aspirations, including our own views of what it means to live life fully.

Dimensions of wellness

Making the right choices for health and well-being can be challenging. Although we know what is good for us and how we can do — and be — better, we may not act on it, or if we do, we may, in due course, slide back to familiar ways. Human behavior — what we do, how we do it, and whether we will succeed — is influenced by many factors, 2 of which are of particular relevance when it comes to wellness: self-regulation and habits.

Self-regulation

Self-regulation is central to effective human functioning ( 4 ). It is “our ability to direct our behavior and control our impulses so that we meet certain standards, achieve certain goals, or reach certain ideals” ( 5 ). It allows us to act in our short- and long-term best interests, consistent with our deepest values ( 6 ). There’s just one limitation: self-regulation requires mental energy, and the brain is always looking for ways to conserve energy (i.e., save effort) ( 7 , 8 ).

Habits, in contrast, require very little energy ( 7 , 8 ). As Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business says, “Any behavior that can be reduced to a routine is one less behavior that we must spend time and energy consciously thinking about and deciding upon” ( 7 ). With the cognitive economy and performance efficiency of habits ( 9 ), the brain can conserve self-regulatory strength to focus on the important decisions in life ( 9 ), and free us to engage in thoughtful activities, such as reflecting on the past and planning for the future.

Habits are powerful. With about 40% of our everyday behavior repeated in the form of habits, they shape our very existence, and ultimately, our future ( 8 ). Habits, in fact, are key to wellness. For better or worse, habits very much influence health, well-being, and quality of life. If you are striving to improve these, you need to think about habits, because if you change your habits for the better, you change your life for the better ( 8 ).

Technically, a habit is “a behavior that is recurrent, is cued by a specific context, often happens without much awareness or conscious intent, and is acquired through frequent repetition” ( 8 ). It can be regarded as a formula (or “habit loop”) that the brain automatically follows: “When I see cue, I will do routine in order to get a reward ” ( 7 ). Studies indicate that once formed, habits become encoded in brain structures and can never truly be eradicated — only replaced with stronger habits ( 7 ). That’s why they are so difficult to change. It’s not just a matter of will-power (i.e., self-regulation); it’s a matter of rewiring the brain. To change a habit, you need to create new routines: Keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine ( 7 ).

Inserting new routines is not easy. Despite knowing what’s good for us and best intentions, habits tend to keep us doing what we always do ( 10 ). They are difficult to change — any of us can attest to this. But we can maximize the probabilities for success with 2 essentials: self-awareness and strategies. Both are indispensable to successful habit formation ( 8 ).

Self-awareness

Change becomes much more achievable if you pay attention to who you are and insert routines that take advantage of your strengths, tendencies, and aptitudes. With self-awareness, you can cultivate the habits that work for you. Consider, for instance, differences in circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms reflect our natural tendencies for sleeping and waking and influence our energy and productivity at different times in the day ( 11 ). The odds of success to improve your fitness won’t increase if, for example, you decide to rise an hour earlier to exercise each day when you happen to be a “night owl” rather than “morning lark.” Self-awareness includes knowledge about other aspects of self as well, such as whether you are a marathoner, sprinter, or procrastinator; under- or over-buyer; simplicity or abundance lover; finisher or opener; and familiarity or novelty lover ( 8 ). It also includes whether you are promotion- or prevention-focused, and whether you like taking small or big steps ( 8 ).

Change also becomes more achievable if you choose strategies that enhance your chance for success. Such strategies include monitoring; scheduling; investing in systems of accountability; abstaining; increasing or decreasing convenience; planning safeguards; detecting rationalizations and false assumptions; using distractions, rewards, and treats; pairing activities; and beginning with habits that directly strengthen self-control ( 8 ). Most successful habit change requires the coordination of multiple strategies to establish a single new behavior ( 8 ), and new habits, on average, take 66 days to form ( 12 ), so the more strategies used, the better.

Change your habits, change your life

Sometimes change takes a long time. Sometimes it requires repeated experiments and failures. But for ongoing betterment, the attempts are unquestionably worthwhile and one success often leads to another. When thinking about habits, wellness, and the health, well-being, and quality of life to which you aspire, consider the following: “Are you going to accept yourself or expect more from yourself?” “Are you going to embrace the present or consider the future?” and “Are you going to care about yourself or overlook yourself?”

Wellness is a dynamic, ever-changing, fluctuating process ( 13 ). It is a lifestyle, a personalized approach to living life in a way that allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow. The past is history; the present and future lie in the choices you make today. Don’t worry about getting it perfect; just get it going, and become the best kind of person you can be.
