This allows people to stay afloat even in the most challenging times and know that there is a safe corner in this world where they can ride out the storm.

Various authors put different emotions and thoughts into the concept of home. For example, Joan Didion (1967) has a particular view of the concept of home. She believes that home is the place where her closest and dearest people are. She loves to visit her family to feel a sense of unity and be close to loved ones. In this house, time seems to slow down, and no matter what happens in life, home is always a place where she can meet people that are ready to support and understand her. This view of a home is quite common: “home is where the heart is.”

Having close people is an integral part of everyone’s life, even from a biological perspective. People need to feel like they belong to a specific group to always be able to receive support. My home is located in Bandra, Mumbai. My father built this home almost 20 years ago. This neighborhood was not that much crowded before and only a couple of buildings were here. But now it has been a really important place for the entire city.

The value of land is pretty high here. We are very lucky that my dad made this building for us. It is a three-storied building. We live on the 2nd floor and the entire building is on rent. We make a good amount of money from this rent.

We are living in a unit with two bedrooms. Each bedroom has an attached toilet. And there is an extra toilet too. There are very beautiful kitchen and a dining room.

My mom keeps the entire home very neat and clean. Especially she keeps the living room very beautiful. The living room has some beautiful paintings and I love them a lot.

My room is the most beautiful room in the entire building. My room is full of beautiful dolls, paintings, and different types of toys. My bed is very small but very beautiful. My dad bought that for me from Canada.

We don’t have any cars, that’s why we don’t require any parking space. But we have enough parking space in front of our house. It will be required because we are planning to get a car soon. Overall, my home is amazing and very interesting to me.

Describe your Ideal Home

In the IELTS speaking test, you are sometimes asked to describe a building. I have written about that before several times. However, today we’re going to look at something a little trickier. This is about a building that may not even exist! You are going to describe your ideal home .

In this article, I’ll tell you how to analyse the cue card, pick the right language, and then give a great answer that could help you to get an excellent IELTS score.

Cue Card: Describe your Ideal Home

Here is the cue card that we will examine today:

Describe your ideal home or place to live. You should say: where it would be how big it would be and what it would contain what features it might include and explain why you think this would be your ideal home or place to live in.

The most important thing about this cue card is the word “ideal.” You would really need to understand this in order to answer it properly.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary , “ideal” means:

perfect, or the best possible

In other words, you are describing a home that you imagine living in one day . It may not even exist right now. It’s the best possible home for you, on a personal level, according to what you can imagine.

You should also aim to discuss the three bullet points and the idea expressed in the final line. You do not need to talk about them in order and don’t worry if you run out of time before you cover them all.

How to Describe your Ideal Home

After you have read the cue card, you should think immediately of a home to describe. It could be a house that you have seen somewhere or one that you just imagine. It’s best to get a concrete idea in your head, though, so that your description is coherent.

You can find lots of examples of dream homes on the internet. You can see various interesting house designs on Twitter, Pinterest, and Reddit, as well as numerous other places. These can give you inspiration.

Of course, it can be hard to describe architecture, even in your native language. Recently, my brother told me that his house had a mezzanine and I had to look it up on Google. I’d never heard the word before!

Still, you really only need to say what is important to you, so just think of features that your house might have. Try to be descriptive.

A swimming pool
Large windows
An office with big bookshelves
A big garden
Views of the sea or mountains
Decking for barbeques
A big veranda
An open living room area
A huge kitchen

These are just some ideas that spring to mind. Obviously, everyone will have different preferences. The important thing is to present your own ideas in the right words.

Now we have seen some useful vocabulary for describing houses, let’s see the names of different types of houses:

There are many types of houses to know. For example:

semi-detached
apartment / flat
mobile home

You don’t need to know all of these but it is worth learning ones that you might want to talk about. For example, maybe you live in a semi-detached house but used to live in a cottage and want to live in a mansion … It would be useful to know these three words.

Planning your Answer

Once you know approximately what you want to say, you can make a few notes to help you. These can be a few key words that will remind you of important points. Some people use this for vocabulary and others use it for structure. It’s really a personal choice.

I might write:

Infinity pool
Counter space

Do these notes mean much to you? Probably not. However, that’s ok because your notes only have to make sense to you.

Sample Band 9 Answer

My ideal home would be located near the seaside. In fact, it would be right on the beach, so I could sit and watch the waves or go for a swim any time that I wanted. It would be close enough that I could hear the sea at night from my bedroom window.

The house itself would be quite large. I would want a big, open living room that looks out on the sea, as well as a main bedroom on the second floor with a similar view. I would need an office with a built-in library, and a gym alongside several spare bedrooms. The kitchen is important because I really like to cook, so I would want a large, modern kitchen with plenty of counter space for preparing food.

I would want a large terrace for sitting out on sunny days or at night, and ideally it would have enough space to give a view of the sky on starry evenings. There should be a swimming pool as well. In particular, I would like an infinity pool because these look really nice.

Although I like the aesthetic of old buildings, I think this one would be quite new because of my requirements. However, the right designer could make it beautiful and functional. Altogether, this home would give me everything I need to have a comfortable life in a relaxing place.

Notes on the Answer

You can see that I have given a thorough answer that is very visual in its description. Although there isn’t much in the way of specialist vocabulary, it is very topic-specific. That means all my language relates to the idea of homes. This is really important for IELTS success.

Some good vocabulary from this answer includes:

right on the beach
a big, open living room
a built-in library
a large, modern kitchen
plenty of counter space
I like the aesthetic of old buildings

Note that I have used a lot of adjectives here to make it really descriptive. Because of the topic (an ideal house), you have a lot of freedom to use your imagination. That can really help you if you have a good vocabulary.

Well, rooms are an integral part of our life, and most individuals spend their quality time in the house along with family members. I think it could be a most crucial part for everyone and here I would like to talk about a room which is my favourite and interesting due to an abundance of reasons first of all my favourite room is my own living room because this room is already decorated with precious elements according to modern style. I also remember that time, while manufacturing the whole house, I gave a piece of advice about using Italian marble for my house because I wanted to decorate that house with my own taste and texture. Apart from that ambience of the inside room is quite mesmerising because I always spend my quality time with family members every evening. We also do a lot of extracurricular activities in this room, and one of the things my favourite is the walls of the living room is a marvel because the colour of a wall painted blue-collar along with premium wallpapers always gives a kind electrifying experience whenever he curtains of this living room is specially designed by a Japanese designer that is my favourite part and and and every time my friends and guest alike to visit my house mt first preference to show that room which I found marvellous and feel proud when they stalk the whole the rooms with the naked eye. Furthermore, it looks like a five-star hotel room with all crucial amenities. Whereas. The furniture used in the living room is quite expensive and imported, and when I feel more stressed, I would like to spend that time in this room, and I charged up it a few times some time; I often listen to songs on 55INCH led connected with home theatre. Last but not least every evening we also have a cup of coffee and watch the TV and also make some jokes. I feel overwhelmed and on cloud 9 when I visit this room in the day to day life.

As a kid, I used to like my tv room most because I like to watch cartoons, so I just sat on my couch for the whole day and watched the cartoon and ate lots of chips but now, as a grown-up, I like my personal room most because it gives me privacy also I have my study table and computer near the window in my room so whenever I feel bored while studying I just open window get some fresh air and start studying again. I have one small house temple in my room. I wake up early and pray to god in my room which gives me lots of positive energy. Moreover, I have a wifi router in my room, so the internet speed is faster in my room than in any other room. I don’t really like to make any changes to my room. I just wanted to have an Ac because it is too hot in summer.

Question 1:- how does a study room help a student.

Answer 1:- Well, in terms of rooms, it gives tremendous support towards student life and whenever a student already being a part of any institution and want to clear any kind of exam so I think the room is the most preferable for them because a student always find a silent ambience in surroundings because they need to more concentrate while the studying apart from that no one can disturb and they put more attention rather than a distraction. This leads to them being able to perform well in their academics. Moreover, study rooms must contain all amenities for day to day life.

Answer 2:- I believe it depends on the student because there are two types of students one who likes to study in the study room in an ideal environment, but other types of students are the one who wants some kind of noise or something because if they try to study in the study room in silence, they may sleep.

Question 2:- Do you like to study? What type of books do you read?

Answer 1:- Yes, I often read books in my quality time because that is the most integral part of my life. Without a book, I feel incomplete, so that is why I am looking for a study most preferable books that are spiritual and regional books because I will make more considerations and do more focus while reading these books it could be more beneficial for me sometimes I gather a lot of new words which helps to improve vocabulary. Moreover, it also helps to develop innovative and cognitive skills to sort out any critical situation with the presence of mind issues. This kind enhances my abilities. At the time, I was seeking random books as well storybooks, and usually, I do readings in the morning and evening because I always find a quiet ambience.

Answer 2:- yes, I usually like to study. I like educational books most, but I also like non-fiction books which can help me to become a better person. I am not very fond of fiction books. I don’t know why but I feel fiction books are boring.

Question 3:- Which one do you prefer – reading or travelling? Why?

Answer 1:- Well both things are quite compatible with me .whilst I think is a totally depend on situation which I will be seeking for sometimes during the travelling and I always carry a book like novels comics it could be a make my journey comfortable and I feel always more electrifying I never get boredom with the books and most of the time I always prefer to do reading whenever I leave for a long journey so I think it could be the best partner in my life and I think my life is easier with books in my backpack.

Answer 2:- It is a tough choice. I like both reading and travelling. I feel reading is an important part of life to evolve to know new things, but travelling is also necessary to connect with nature, so I can’t choose one I like both.

Let’s start with a simple sentence:

In Britain, sometimes people say flat . Flat and apartment have the same meaning.

Next, let’s add a bit more detail. What kind of house or apartment is it?

For example:

I live in a small, two-storey house in the suburbs.

When we say how many floors a building has, we normally use the word storey . For example, you can live in a two-storey house , a four-storey apartment building , etc.

I live in an apartment, on the third floor of a four-storey building.

There are many different kinds of house and apartment. For example, do you live in a terraced house , a semi-detached house , or a detached house ? Terraced houses have other houses on both sides. A semi-detached-house has another house on one side, and a detached house stands by itself.

If you live in a very tall apartment building with many floors, you can say you live in a high-rise (in the US), or a tower block (in the UK).

Sometimes, a house is divided into apartments. These are called converted apartments .

Apartments come in many different sizes. If an apartment just has one room, which is a bedroom and a living room together, it’s called a studio . Of course, you can get bigger apartments: two-bedroom apartments, three-bedroom apartments, etc.

Large apartments might be duplex apartments . This means the apartment has more than one floor.

It’s always better to add adjectives or details to make your speaking more interesting! Let’s try:

My house has two small bedrooms, a kitchen with a dining table, a living room with big windows and a small garden.

What other rooms might you have in your home? You might have a dining room where people can sit and eat together. Maybe you have a study or an office where you can work. If you live in a warmer country, you might have a balcony or even a terrace where you can sit outside.

What about your home? What rooms does it have? Does your home have a garden, a balcony, or another outside area? Try to make one or two sentences about your home. For example:

I live in a two-bedroom apartment. The bedrooms are quite small, but there’s a big living room with a dining area, a modern kitchen, and also a small balcony where we can sit outside in the summer.

3. Saying what You Like and Dislike

OK, now you can hopefully give some facts about where you live. But what about your opinion: what do you like about your home, and what would you change if you could? Let’s look at some words you can use to describe buildings or rooms .

Positive words you can use to describe your home include:

Spacious –> large and with lots of room
Cosy –> comfortable in a warm way
Light –> describes a home which gets lots of natural light
Warm/cool –> comfortable in winter/summer
Convenient –> close to shops, transport, your job, etc.

You can use convenient + for . For example:

It’s convenient for the subway.
It’s convenient for my office.

Could you use any of these words when talking about your home?

What if you don’t like where you live? Here are some words you could use:

Cramped –> too small, so you don’t have enough space
Dark –> doesn’t get enough light, so that it’s dark inside even when it’s sunny outside
Draughty –> cold air comes in in the winter
Stuffy –> there’s not enough air, so it’s uncomfortable in hot weather
Noisy –> if your home is near a main road, it might be noisy, even at night

Can you make a sentence about your home using some of these words? For example:

My house is light and spacious, but it’s also very draughty in winter.
I like my apartment because it’s cosy, although it can be noisy because there’s a restaurant just downstairs.

4. Saying Who You Live With

Who do you live with? Do you live with your parents, your husband/wife, or your family ? Or do you live with flatmates (people you share a rented apartment with) or friends?

Let’s look at examples of what you could say here:

I live by myself.

5. Describing Your Neighbourhood

First, be careful with the word neighbourhood . A neighbourhood is not a person! Your neighbourhood is the area near your home.

So, where is your home? Is it in the city centre, the suburbs, or is it outside the city? If you live outside the city, do you live on the outskirts of the city, in a village, or in the middle of nowhere?

How could you describe your neighbourhood? Is it quiet or lively ? Trendy or boring ? Are there many cafés, bars, restaurants, or other things to do? Are there shops, parks, or sports facilities?

For example, you could say:

I live in a very lively area just south of the city centre. There are lots of cafes, shops, and places to go.
I live in a quiet neighbourhood in the suburbs, in the north of the city. It’s a new area, and it’s nice but also quite boring. There isn’t really anything to do.

Now, let’s try to put everything together. If you use everything we’ve looked at, you should be able to produce a clear, detailed paragraph talking about your home. For example:

I live in a two-storey terraced house. It has two bedrooms, a living room, a small kitchen and a garden. It’s cosy and convenient for getting to work, but it’s a bit cramped, especially when we have guests. I live with my wife and daughter. Our house is near the city centre, in a quiet neighbourhood. There isn’t much to do, but there are some small shops and a park where we go if the weather’s nice.

Here’s one more:

I live by myself in a studio apartment. It just has one main room, with a tiny kitchen. It’s very warm in winter, but it can get a bit stuffy in summer. I live in the city centre, very close to everything. It’s very lively, with lots of bars and restaurants. It’s a good place for young people to live, but not many families choose to live here.

My village exists in a low lying area that has a warm summer and a chilly winter. Mostly I visit my village in summers because of the holidays. My Uncle Donald Trump Told Me Disabled Americans Like My Son ‘Should Just Die’

W hen my uncle was elected President , I recognized what a highly privileged position I would be in. I would have some access to the White House. And as long as that was true, I wanted to make sure I used that access for something positive. I was eager to champion something my wife, Lisa, and I were deeply passionate about, something we lived every day: the challenges for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Our son William, our third child, was born on June 30, 1999. Within 24 hours, he went from seemingly healthy to fighting for his life in the NICU. Raising him was different from the start. William was diagnosed at three months with infantile spasms, a rare seizure disorder which in William's case altered his development physically and cognitively. We had so many questions: What would the future hold for someone like William? How far could he go? How much could he learn? Would he ever have the chance to do the things that other children do?

We just didn’t know. It took 15 years before his medical team could accurately pinpoint the cause of his condition: a KCNQ2 mutation, a genetic misfire that the doctors called a potassium channel deletion.

In our journey with William, Lisa and I had become close to some truly inspiring parents and dedicated advocates who were doing amazing work to improve the day-to-day reality for families like ours. It’s a huge lift for caregivers, not to mention the constant need to mitigate expenses . There are so many different demands and challenges. But there are things that the government can do—some things that can only be done by the government, both federal and state. We wanted to bring knowledgeable people to the White House, to see if we could make a difference.

Lisa reached out to my cousin Ivanka, who was working in the White House as an advisor to the President. Ivanka got right back to her and said she’d be happy to help. She provided a contact for Ben Carson , the retired neurosurgeon who was secretary of housing and urban development. We brought several talented advocates with us for a meeting with Carson and members of his senior staff in April 2017. “Look,” I said as we got started, “I’m the least important person in the room.” I wanted the focus to be on the others, who knew a lot more than I did. They immediately started floating ideas, which was exactly why we were there. Our collective voice was being heard. It was a start.

In January 2020, just before COVID hit, Lisa, myself, and a team of advocates met with Chris Neeley, who headed the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, a much-needed federal advisory committee that promotes policies and initiatives that support independent and lifelong inclusion . We discussed the need for all medical schools to include courses that focus on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities . We emphasized how crucial it was for hospitals and other acute-care facilities to help patients transition from pediatric to adult services. We emphasized the importance of collecting sufficient data to explain medically complex disorders. This was not about more government spending. It was about smarter investing and greater efficiency.

We spent the next few months making calls and talking with officials and gathering our own recommendations, giving special attention to the critical need for housing support for people with disabilities. We were back in Washington in May.

By this time, COVID was raging. We were all masked up and COVID tested on the way into the White House Cabinet Room. Once we got inside, we sat down with Alex Azar , the administration’s secretary of health and human services, and Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health, both of whom served on the White House Coronavirus Task Force. The promising agency motto stated: HHS: Enhancing the Health and Well-Being of All Americans.

Sharp, direct, and to the point, Azar exhibited my kind of efficiency with no time to waste. His first question was, “OK, why are you here?”

I made a brief introduction. Our group included a leading doctor and several highly qualified advocates. What followed was a great discussion. Something clicked with Giroir—an idea for a program everyone could agree on that would cut through the bureaucracy and control costs and also yield better and more efficient medical outcomes.

Excellent. We were making progress.

“Really appreciate your coming in,” Azar finally said, more warmly than he had sounded at the start. “I know we’re going to see the President.”

The meeting I had assumed would be a quick handshake hello with Donald had turned into a 45-minute discussion in the Oval Office with all of us—Azar, Giroir, the advocates, and me. I never expected to be there so long. Donald seemed engaged, especially when several people in our group spoke about the heart-wrenching and expensive efforts they’d made to care for their profoundly disabled family members, who were constantly in and out of the hospital and living with complex arrays of challenges .

Donald was still Donald, of course. He bounced from subject to subject—disability to the stock market and back to disability. But promisingly, Donald seemed genuinely curious regarding the depth of medical needs across the U.S. and the individual challenges these families faced. He told the secretary and the assistant secretary to stay in touch with our group and to be supportive.

After I left the office, I was standing with the others near the side entrance to the West Wing when Donald’s assistant caught up with me. “Your uncle would like to see you,” she said.

Azar was still in the Oval Office when I walked back in. “Hey, pal,” Donald said. “How’s everything going?”

“Good,” I said. “I appreciate your meeting with us.”

“Sure, happy to do it.”

He sounded interested and even concerned. I thought he had been touched by what the doctor and advocates in the meeting had just shared about their journey with their patients and their own family members. But I was wrong.

“Those people . . . ” Donald said, trailing off. “The shape they’re in, all the expenses, maybe those kinds of people should just die.”

I truly did not know what to say. He was talking about expenses. We were talking about human lives. For Donald, I think it really was about the expenses, even though we were there to talk about efficiencies, smarter investments, and human dignity.

I turned and walked away.

When William was 9 years old, Lisa and I met with Donald and a medical fund was created for William's care by the Trump Family, a fund that was crucial to our ability to support him.

In the summer of 2018, William was in the hospital for almost three weeks with a serious case of life-threatening pneumonia. He was 19 and very sick. It was incredibly frightening for Lisa and me—and for his brother and sister too. It was always hard to know if moments like these could compromise his health to the point that we would lose him. These are the times that you reach for all the strength you have.

William came home with oxygen and a feeding tube. After more than two weeks on a ventilator, he needed to learn how to eat all over again. We were too often in these setback situations, but you move forward the best you can.

It’s times like these when family support is most needed and appreciated. At every opportunity, we let my aunts and uncles know how grateful we were for the medical fund for William’s care and recovery. We sent pictures and updates, as we had in the past. We got no personal responses, which was the norm. It was the dedicated support and genuine love of caregivers that helped us the most.

Uncle Robert died in 2020 , and the medical fund for William continued. It was enormously helpful with our home-care costs and medical expenses, and we were always grateful to my father’s siblings for contributing. But even before Robert’s death, their interest had seemed to begin waning. My cousin Eric, who was the administrator, called me to say the fund was running low. Donald was the only one contributing consistently. Eric said he’d been getting some resistance from Maryanne, Elizabeth, and Ann Marie, Robert’s widow. I really didn’t look forward to these calls.

“Why don’t you call Donald?” Eric said. “Talk to him about it.”

I thanked Eric for the heads-up and promised I would.

Soon thereafter, I was up at Briarcliff Manor, home of the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, N.Y. Donald happened to be there.

He was talking with a group of people. I didn’t want to interrupt. I just said hi on my way through the clubhouse. I called him later that afternoon, and he answered.

I got him up to speed on what Eric had told me. I said I’d heard the fund for William was running low, and unfortunately, the expenses certainly were not easing up as our son got older. In fact, with inflation and other pressures, the needs were greater than they’d been. “We’re getting some blowback from Maryanne and Elizabeth and Ann Marie. We may need your help with this. Eric wanted me to give you a call.”

Donald took a second as if he was thinking about the whole situation.

“I don’t know,” he finally said, letting out a sigh. “He doesn’t recognize you. Maybe you should just let him die and move down to Florida.”

Wait! What did he just say? That my son doesn’t recognize me? That I should just let him die?

Did he really just say that? That I should let my son die . . . so I could move down to Florida?

I’m usually pretty good at getting my head around things that other people say, even when I don’t agree with them. But this was a tough one. This was my son.

Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised to hear Donald say that. It wasn’t far off from what he’d said that day in the Oval Office after our meeting with the advocates. Only that time, it was other people’s children who should die. This time, it was my son.

I didn’t want to argue with him. I knew there was no point in that, not at the same time I was calling for his help. I tried to keep my cool.

“No, Donald,” I said. “He does recognize me.”

Donald’s comment was appalling. It hurt to hear him say that. But it also explained why Lisa and I felt so strongly about advocating for our son and why we wanted to help other people understand what it was like to raise a child like William. A lot of people just don’t know.

People with these disabilities are perceived as less than in so many ways. That attitude is everywhere, even at the highest levels of policy and politics.

William deserves a life just like anyone else, and to that end, I knew I had to advocate for him in every way possible. I might never change Donald’s mind or change the mind of anyone who lacked love and compassion for those whose voices couldn’t be heard and whose lives were fully dependent on others. But I knew what I could do. I could offer my voice, my experience, and my strength to push forward for those who needed it.

The barriers are everywhere , even in communities that are generally supportive, like ours. There are still doorways that can’t accommodate wheelchairs. It is still hard to find meaningful day programs that foster independence with learning, socialization, and assistive technology. The whole narrative still needs to change.

I knew that acceptance and tolerance would only come with public education and awareness. Donald might never understand this, but at least he had been open to our advocating through the White House. That was something. If we couldn’t change his feelings about William, that was his loss. He would never feel the love and connection that William offered us daily.

Former President Donald J. Trump repeated a false and outlandish claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have abducted and eaten their neighbors’ pets.

Mr. Trump made the comments on Tuesday early in his first debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, shortly after Ms. Harris mocked his rallies as so filled with fictions and fringe theories that attendees leave early. Mr. Trump responded by trying to pivot back to the subject under discussion, immigration.

“A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so embarrassed by it,” he said. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

Mr. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, have amplified the internet rumor on the campaign trail this week. It stems from viral social media posts that have spread as Mr. Vance and others have sought to stir fears about the growing Haitian population in Springfield , though members of the community are living and working in the United States legally.

Local officials have found no evidence, credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed by Haitian residents.

When David Muir, a debate moderator, noted the lack of evidence, Mr. Trump said he had gotten his information from “the people on television saying my dog was taken and used for food.”

Ms. Harris laughed. Mr. Trump’s “extreme” statements, she said, are one of the reasons she has the endorsements of 200 Republicans.

Mr. Vance first made the claim about Haitian immigrants on Monday , saying “it’s coming to your city next.” A news release from the Trump campaign later recounted the falsehoods. Mr. Vance then appeared to backtrack on Tuesday morning in a social post, saying his office had “received many inquiries” about the false claims. But he added that “it’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false.”

That has not stopped the social media platforms from being awash with memes and AI-generated images of cats in support of Mr. Trump.

Job opportunities in Springfield, a city of roughly 58,000 people between Columbus and Dayton, have attracted thousands of Haitians since the pandemic began, with city officials estimating that as many as 20,000 have arrived. By some accounts, the immigrant community has helped revitalize the town , though it has put pressure on housing, schools and hospitals.

Trump, JD Vance repeat baseless claim Haitian immigrants are eating pets as Ohio officials say there is no evidence

Officials in Springfield, Ohio, said Monday they have not received any credible reports of Haitian immigrants abducting and eating pets, despite viral claims on social media that have been amplified by former President Donald Trump, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance and others.

References to the claim, which allege Haitian migrants have been eating cats, as well as ducks and geese, have garnered millions of views on X, with Vance's X post racking up 11.1 million views alone as of Wednesday morning. Vance , the Republican senator for Ohio, said he had previously raised the issue of Haitian immigrants "causing chaos all over Springfield," adding, "Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country."

Trump repeated the baseless claim in Tuesday night's debate with Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

"In Springfield, they're eating the dogs — the people that came in, they're eating the cats. They're eating — they're eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame," Trump said. When ABC anchor David Muir responded that city officials disputed that, Trump insisted he had seen people saying so on television.

His comments sent the topic "THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS" trending on social media following the debate, spawning thousands of posts discussing the false claim.

The House Judiciary GOP , Sen. Ted Cruz and Elon Musk , the owner of X, had posted Monday on social media about the claim. Cruz, a Texas Republican, posted a meme on X showing two cats holding each other, with text that reads "Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don't eat us."

But the city's spokesperson told CBS News there have been "no credible reports or specific claims" of pets being harmed by migrants.

"In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community," said Karen Graves, strategic engagement manager for Springfield.

While it's not possible to say where the claim originated, the Springfield News-Sun reported that it may be linked to a viral post in a Springfield Facebook group.

In the Facebook post, a person says a neighbor's daughter's friend lost her cat and later found it hanging from a branch near a Haitian neighbor's house, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Screenshots of the post have been circulating on X and other platforms, racking up thousands of likes and views.

The post appears to be in a private Facebook group; CBS News has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of the post.

Some social media users shared body camera footage of an unrelated incident in which an Ohio woman was accused of killing and eating a cat in Canton, a city more than 170 miles away from Springfield. Public records indicate the woman in the footage, Allexis Telia Ferrell, is not a migrant and has lived in Ohio for at least 18 years.

A photo of a Black man holding a goose has also been widely shared on social media, with some people alleging it is evidence that Haitian immigrants are eating geese in Springfield.

CBS News spoke to the Ohio man who took the photo. He wishes to remain anonymous for safety reasons, saying he's received threats after the photo went viral.

He said he took the photo on July 28 and posted it on Reddit in the Ohio and Columbus subreddits because "you don't normally see a guy walking down the street with a goose."

The image is not from Springfield. CBS News has verified the image was taken in Columbus.

The Reddit user said he regrets taking the photo and "hates" that it's being shared by right-wing accounts on social media.

Musk replied "!!" to an article posted on X that featured the image. The photo was also posted by the X account End Wokeness, which has a history of posting content critical of migrants, where it was viewed nearly 5 million times.

Leann Castillo, executive director for the Clark County Park District, said there has been "no evidence or reports" of people eating pets or wildlife in Clark County parks.

"People have contacted us to inquire, but we do not have any knowledge of this taking place," Castillo said.

The photographer was also critical of Vance's spreading of the falsehood about immigrants and pets. "Instead of trying to build up his state, instead he's trying to make the state look bad — by spreading fake stories and b******t for political gain," he said.

Social media users are also sharing AI images in connection with the claims about Haitian migrants. One AI-created image shows Trump holding a cat in each arm, running through a crowd of Black people. The caption reads: "The kittens of Springfield have only one hope."

Springfield, a city of just under 58,000 people, has seen a large increase in migrants arriving in the last several years.

There are an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 migrants in Ohio's Clark County, with more than 10,000 coming from Haiti, according to local officials. The Springfield-based Haitian Community Help and Support Center was established in 2023 to help assist migrants, especially Haitains, arriving in Clark County.

In addition to dispelling rumors about harm to pets, the city's spokesperson said there were no confirmed instances of migrants squatting, littering or deliberately disrupting traffic.

When Kamala Harris ran for president in the Democratic primary race before the 2020 election, it was often remarked that the political times didn't suit her personal narrative.

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, her past as a prosecutor and perceived closeness with police and law and order were something she distanced herself from, fearing a rebuke from her progressive side.

Fast forward four years and the prosecutor persona is an asset that she is leaning into — reminding us of it on repeat. The political times have changed, the Black Lives Matter movement has dissipated and being seen to be tough on crime is suddenly a virtue again.

Context is everything.

Politics and timing are inextricably linked — sometimes the Zeitgeist suits your story, other times it doesn't.

When Bill Shorten was crazy-brave enough to take a suite of policies to the 2019 election that fundamentally shook up the tax system, he thought the country was ready for what he offered — but the result showed his narrative plainly didn't suit the times.

Has that now shifted? Has our sense of crisis around inequality and housing inequity changed the political paradigm? Was he ahead of the times?

Unlike Harris, Shorten will never get a chance to see if the political mood might align for him, to see whether the times might suit him and his ideas better.

The mood has changed

It's often only when someone leaves that it's realised how much they might be missed. And so it was when the political and media class went into overdrive, realising that after 17 years in national parliament, Bill Shorten — flawed as he no doubt is — had had the courage of his convictions.

Asked if he was ahead of the political trend, Shorten told me he accepts that he had too many big policies that voters rejected at the 2019 election, but he didn't shy away from explaining the value of the ideas behind the change.

"On the tax policies, I have a general conviction that income is taxed too highly in Australia and property is taxed much more preferentially. What generates productivity in Australia are the people earning income as opposed to passive investments," he told me on RN breakfast on Friday.

"Having said that, the verdict came in from the people — 49 per cent of people accepted our policies, 51 per cent didn't. I think Anthony and Jim, with the changes they made to Mr Morrison's tax cuts for the rich and sharing with all 13.6 million people was a masterstroke, especially in a cost-of-living crisis.

"If you have a lot of property, your tax regimes are preferential. If you earn income, you pay direct rates of tax.

"Leaving aside tax policies, we do have a challenge in Australia about inequity between generations. But I have to say the inequity is not because someone's old or someone's young. It's just never been so important to have rich parents," Shorten said bluntly.

"So, what we really have is a wealth inequity. And what we have with our young people is they've got to pay the GST, they pay their marginal rates of tax."

Shorten isn't pushing to resurrect his housing policies and tax reforms, but the mood of the nation has demonstrably changed since his manifesto was rejected. He may be moving on, but the ideas are living on without him.

Negative gearing on the nose

The Greens and crossbench independents have urged Labor to go further to shake up the housing system in favour of home owners that live in their houses and address the $50 billion cost of rental tax deductions to the federal budget.

Now YouGov research commissioned by Q+A reveals an overwhelming majority of Australians believe in the right to own their own home and would support a 5 per cent market fall to improve affordability.

There is one figure in the YouGov polling that shows how much the political temperature has changed on this issue. When those polled were asked if they support a ban on owning more than three residential properties so first home owners who want to buy a home to live in will have more of a chance without wealthy investors driving up the market price, a staggering 63 per cent said they supported the three-property limit. Only 37 per cent were opposed.

And fascinatingly, 54 per cent that supported the change were Coalition voters.

The weighted polling sample of 1,500-plus voters shows more than six in 10 support abolishing negative gearing for property investors, a ban on owning more than three residential properties and having access to superannuation to buy a home. Eight in 10 want a massive increase in social housing construction to provide median income earners affordable rentals.

The new YouGov research comes after a poll by research group RedBridge, commissioned by housing campaign Everybody's Home, revealed that only a small minority of Australians are in favour of maintaining investor-friendly tax settings.

The poll of 1,500 Australian voters found that 58 per cent, or three in five, are in support of limiting or abolishing negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount.

Only 22 per cent stated a desire to maintain the current tax settings, while 20 per cent stated they are unsure.

So what does it tell us?

The housing crisis in Australia is becoming a lightning rod issue. It speaks to the frustrations of a generation of Australians who have come to believe the system is stacked against them. The renter class is becoming a powerful political constituency.

The chair of Australia's National Housing Supply and Affordability Council, Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz, addressed the National Press Club last week and welcomed a tax review "specifically in how it is supporting greater supply of housing".

"But this needs to be job done by tax experts, not by property people," she says.

"And it needs to pay attention to unintended consequences and transitional arrangements and how the whole system hangs together."

The council was established by the federal government in December to give independent expert advice on the housing industry.

In May, its first State of the Housing System report found the national 1.2 million housing target was unlikely to be met in its current time frame.

And that's the dilemma — the strategy of just adding more supply is rolling out too slowly, the public is growing frustrated and the complexity and time it takes to make changes that shift the dial go beyond one political cycle.

Labor's messaging on housing policy has been a frustration internally. The government has committed $32 billion to housing but you wouldn't know it given the lack of public credit they are getting.

Smart politicians seize the public mood when there's been a shift and know how to read the room.

The room is telling them all that incrementalism on housing is no longer working.
