Doctoral Scholarships

The NIHSS collaborates annually with the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) to extend 150 scholarships per annum to full-time PhD students based at South African universities. The main objective of this programme is to promote scholarship and address inequities in the humanities and social sciences. To ensure that successful applicants are provided with structured intellectual and mentorship support, the NIHSS-SAHUDA cooperation has created an ambitious national doctoral programme for the humanities and social sciences. The NIHSS Strategic Plan for 2015 - 2020 sets a target of 900 South African students partaking in Doctoral Schools by 2020. The NIHSS Doctoral Programme thus serves to advance postgraduate scholarship through a variety of innovations, including:

• Providing scholarships for postgraduate students studying in the humanities and social sciences;
• Strengthening a student-centred culture in the higher education system and helping to create an environment where the critical, analytical and normative capacities of students are enhanced;
• Ensuring collaborative supervision of doctoral students by two or more universities, which could include South African universities collaborating with universities outside the borders of South Africa; and
• Addressing inequities with regard to the demographic composition of PhD holders.

About doctoral funding.

The Doctoral degree at UJ develops the intellectual, research and professional skills of the student. At UJ we provide doctoral programmes that are intense, challenging and stimulating within a heightened learning environment, thereby creating an intellectually rewarding experience. UJ Doctoral graduates are recognised experts who have made distinctive contributions in their fields.

The Postgraduate School (PGS) provides support to the University of Johannesburg’s Doctoral students. This is done through the Postgraduate Funding Management (PFM) area. PFM is responsible for communicating the various postgraduate funding options made available at UJ for Doctoral level of study.

Doctoral students are funded from internal and external funds in order for them to successfully complete their qualifications. Scholarships that are offered under internal funding are categorized as Global Excellence Stature with the research focus on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and URC funds. URC funds have various sub-categories and are listed as UJ-Commonwealth, URC International, Supervisor-Linked (SLB) bursaries and Special URC. SLB bursaries are available for both the part-time and full-time students.

PFM has embarked on reaching our success plan by increasing number of postgraduate students. Funding for doctoral students are crucial to the university’s goals, hence external funders are assisting the university in reaching these goals. External funders are National Research Foundation (NRF), Department of Science and Innovation and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (DSI-CSIR), Duke CE, Organisation for Women in Science (OWSD) and various Sector of Education and Training Authority (SETA) organisations. Students can only apply when the call for these scholarships is out.

INTERACT-Africa PhD and MSc Scholarships 2024/2025 for Africans.

INTERACT-Africa is an Intra-Africa Academic mobility project funded by the European Union (EU). The project focuses on Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology, with emphasis on conversion of organic waste to valuable bioproducts for transitioning into environmental sustainable and socially inclusive economies.

INTERACT-Africa  aims at :

• Promoting inclusive learning mobility opportunities by enhancing capacity building of HEIs by focusing on training and education in green Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices
• Fostering entrepreneurship and support the establishment of green technology businesses in Africa by providing mentorship, access to funding, and technical support to aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups working in the field of green Chemistry, Biology and Information technology
• Facilitating networking and knowledge sharing among businesses to promote innovation and sustainable economic growth through provision of internships, cooperative education programs, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Scholarship Period

INTERACT-Africa is offering 28 postgraduate scholarships for the degree seeking mobility. 5 scholarships for the PhD and 23 for Masters programmes.

• For PhD students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 36 months.
• For MSc students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 24 months.

Eligibility criteria

• The candidate must meet minimum requirement for admission into Masters and PhD programmes as stipulated by the host University Senate/regulating body.
• Provide proof that the candidate is a national of and residence of an eligible country.
• Student beneficiaries must be of African nationality and residing in Africa at the time of application.
• All interested candidates must submit a research concept paper in the intended area of study (1 page, Times New Roman, single spacing).
• Applicants will not be allowed to participate in the mobility without an admission letter from the host university.
• Applicants to declare not to have already benefited from a previous student scholarship under the projects selected in the framework of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027.
• Applicants to commit not to benefit from another EU funded scholarship scheme to implement the same activity during their Intra-Africa mobility period.
• Provide motivation letter reflecting innovative technologies in climate change and mitigation.
• Recommendation letters and/ reference letters (two). One from an academic advisor or professor/lecturer.
• Applicant must be willing to study not in his/her country but within the eligible countries
• Provide proof of Special needs where applicable
• Applicants from Non – – English level B2 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or its equivalent is mandatory to study in the institutions that use English as the language of instruction.

Application Deadline: February 19, 2024  .

Scholarships for the year 2024 are open for students at the University of Bangui to complete a Doctorate in a French or African university. For the Doctorate or Post-Doctorate level, students registered or in the process of registering for a thesis in a French, Cameroonian or Senegalese university can apply.

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

• Be of Central African nationality and resident in the Central African Republic
• Be aged 45 or less
• Be a lecturer or temporary or tenured teacher at the University of Bangui
• Present a solid and relevant research project

Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship 2024 for talented African Females (Funded to Barcelona, Spain)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship. The Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship is a tribute to our Doctor Honoris Causa Dorcas Muthoni.  Dorcas Muthoni, a Kenyan engineer and entrepreneur, CEO and founder of the company Openworld, received the University’s highest recognition on 15th December 2017 for her significant work in the promotion of engineering studies among young women in Africa, the mentoring of young people, and her social commitment in the fight against poverty.  This PhD fellowship seeks doctoral applications from talented African female students (only African nationality applicants will be considered) with strong research interests. Candidates for PhD positions must hold an M.Sc degree or equivalent. 

The Dorcas Muthoni PhD scholarship is aligned with the university institutional commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), it aims to contribute to quality education and gender equality, with a focus on African Women. The first edition of this PhD Fellowship was opened in 2018, and the second in 2020. We are pleased to launch our third edition for 2024. The main objectives of this fellowship are: 

• To promote gender equality & contribute to reduce the gender gap in ICT; by facilitating more women pursuing scientific/technological/engineering careers and lowering the barriers women face when pursuing careers in STEM disciplines
• To share excellent research with African female researchers during their PhD Studies.  Our ICT department  consists of  more than 20 research groups  who are very active in international research projects and nationally we are the only Engineering university department in Spain to have been awarded for a second time the Spanish research excellence seal Maria de Maeztu. The  Maria de Maeztu Strategic Research Program  is a 4 year research initiative funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to promote artificial and natural intelligence for ICT and beyond within not only our Engineering ICT department, but our university. 
• To contribute to future social impact in African countries. The applicants are expected to return to their African home country after completion of their PhD studies in order to pursue a career related to ICT there. 

Research Areas

Students will pursue doctoral studies in one of the ICT  Research Areas  of the department which includes: Cognition, Computation and Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Theoretical Computer Science, Natural Language Processing, Ubiquitous Computing, Information Retrieval and Data Mining, Cognitive Multimedia Technologies, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Sound and Music Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Educational Technologies, Network Technologies and Strategies, Wireless Communications, Cybersecurity, Information Theory and Coding, Computational Neuroscience, Instrumentation and Biomedical Electronics, Computational Imaging and Computational Physiology, Analysis of Biomedical Data and Non-Linear Signal Analysis.

 The university offers a predoctoral contract with a minimum gross monthly salary of 1.470,98€ for the 1st and 2nd year, and a gross monthly salary of 1.576,05€ for the 3rd year.  Teaching.  PRC includes a teaching assistance load of  45  hours per academic year.  These teaching hours are a compulsory pre-requisite  to be able to enter the fellowship selection process.  Start-up Fund.  The fellowship will also include a startup/Landing Fund to facilitate the fellow’s initial expenditure. The fund will be for the amount of 2500€.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme (GOI-IES) 2024 for study in Ireland (Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme.

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) programme supports high-calibre international students who wish to study at master’s or PhD level in Ireland  [1] . The programme is funded by the Government of Ireland in partnership with Irish higher education institutions and managed by the Higher Education Authority. Under the initiative, 60 scholarships are awarded each year for one year of full-time study at master’s or PhD level. The programme is open to applicants studying in any field.

Eligibility

• In order to be eligible for a Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship, applicants must have a domiciliary of origin outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland/ United Kingdom.
• Candidates will need to apply for admission to a relevant master’s or PhD programme offered by an eligible higher education institution as per that institution’s admission procedures.
• Applicants must have a conditional or final offer of admission to that higher education institution at the time of application and will be required to submit a copy of same.
• The offer letter must confirm that the student has been offered a place on a full-time programme as an international fee-paying student.
• A Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship consists of a stipend amounting to €10,000 for one year of full-time study at master’s or PhD level. 
• The awardees’ host higher education institutions are required to give a full fee waiver to the awardees for the year of their scholarship. Successful scholars will be expected to commence their studies in either September or October 2024.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program ​aims to prepare young people to be agents of change in their communities, countries, and regions.  Scholars attend a series of workshops, courses, and fieldwork in addition to the courses for their degrees.

The $9 million AUB Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program awill enable young adults who are sensitive to their communities’ concerns and proactive in their environment to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health or Medical Laboratory Sciences at AUB. In addition to full scholarships and living expenses, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars at AUB will benefit from intensive preparatory courses, mentoring, career counselling, and internships at institutions and organizations relevant to their field of study. A give-back component is incorporated into the program, which allows students to contribute to their communities through several volunteer projects and activities.

Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2024 for Candidates from Developing Countries to study in Belgium (Funded)

With support from its “ Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University (‘North’) and half at a university in a developing country (‘South’). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). The candidate must have full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

• Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – one of the selected developing countries (see  country list );
• The proposals must be jointly submitted by a candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university (South);
• No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless  preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development;
• Only degree students (students who intend to obtain a (joint ) PhD degree at Ghent University) can apply. Exchange students cannot apply for this scholarship; 
• This program is meant for students at the beginning of their PhD. To a limited extent, PhD students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research. At the time the fellowship starts (1/10/2024), a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research must still be required to complete the PhD;
• Ghent university wants to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. That is why a Ghent University supervisor can support maximum 2 candidates per call on condition they are both of a different gender.
• PhD scholarship at Ghent University  (in total 24 months).
• The Ghent University promoter receives a bench fee of € 310/per month of research in Ghent + € 8.000 travel budget to cover (part of) the operational costs, as well as part of the travelling costs of the student and both the Ghent University and the local promoter.

Commonwealth Split-site (PhD) Scholarships 2024/2025 for Study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

Funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. They offer PhD scholars studying at eligible universities across the Commonwealth the opportunity to conduct research at an institute in the UK for 12 months.

Purpose: 

• To widen access to UK equipment and expertise for high quality doctoral candidates from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries, and to contribute to UK and Commonwealth higher education and research through collaboration and partnerships.

Intended   beneficiaries:  

• High-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to become influential teachers or researchers in their home countries.

To apply for these Scholarships, prospective Scholars must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
• Be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time your Scholarship starts (September 2023)
• Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between your home university and your proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals – see section on ‘Tenure and placement’ for further details. Both supervisors must provide a supporting statement which provides further details of the link to ensure your application is eligible.
• Be available to start your academic studies in the UK in September 2023
• By September 2023, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this Scholarship

Each Scholarship provides:

• Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before your award is confirmed)
• Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee
• Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,236 per month, or £1,516 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels)
• Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
• Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
• If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £529 per month for the first child, and £131 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK.

Applications for Commonwealth PhD scholarships for the 2023/24 academic year are now open. The scholarships are for study in the UK beginning in September/October 2024.

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for applicants from least developed countries and fragile States, as classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), in the Commonwealth,  for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. It operates within the framework of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and offers a vivid demonstration of the UK’s enduring commitment to the Commonwealth. By attracting individuals with outstanding talent and identifiable potential from all backgrounds and supporting them to become leaders and innovators on returning to their home countries, the CSC’s work combines sustainable development with the UK national interest and provides opportunities for international partnerships and collaboration.

Purpose:  Funded by the  UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international applicants and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries:  Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Applicant eligibility

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be available to start academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2024.
• By September 2024, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)*.
• Not be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in their home country before September/October 2024.
• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.
• Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format.

Financial assistance

Each scholarship provides:

• Approved airfare from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before the award is confirmed).
• Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee.
• Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,347 per month, or £1,652 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels).
• Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.
• Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
• Provision towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (the cost of one economy class return airfare to the fieldwork location), where approved.
• Paid mid-term visit (airfare) to the Scholar’s home country, unless they have claimed or intend to claim spouse and/or child allowances during their scholarship or have received a return airfare to their home country for fieldwork.
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse but no children: spouse allowance of £290 per month for a maximum period of nine months, if they and their spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless the spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse and children: spouse allowance of £290 per month and child allowance of £290 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their spouse and children are living with them at the same address in the UK (unless their spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their children but no spouse: child allowance of £576.61 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their children are living with them at the same address in the UK.

Application Procedure

There are three types of nominating agency for PhD Scholarships:

• National nominating agencies  – this is the main route of application
• Selected universities/university bodies  – which can nominate their own academic staff
• Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies

Nominating agencies put forward scholarship candidates to the CSC for consideration.  The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships.

Each nominating agency oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria.  Applicants must check with the nominating agency for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria.

Nominating agencies may set their own closing dates for applications.

Agencies will nominate scholarship candidates to the CSC by December 2023.

The France–South Africa Scholarship Programme 2023/2024 for Southern Africans to study in France (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline:  16 October 2023 at 23:59 SA time.

The France – South Africa Scholarship Programme is directed to South African students who intend to study in universities or higher education institutions in France for their   Master’s degree or PhD.

The programme is also open to students from Lesotho and Malawi.

The next call for applications is open for students who intend to start their studies in France in  September 2024.  Applicants will be contacted individually as needed. The list of the laureates and the waiting list will be announced according to the indicated timeline. Follow-up requests by applicants will not be answered.

Due to the differences between the Southern and Northern hemisphere calendars, laureates will follow a specific programme in South Africa from February 2024 to July 2024. This track will include online French courses organized by the network of the Alliances Françaises. It may also include an internship in French Companies and organisations based in South Africa, depending on the opportunities and the profile of each laureate.

Eligible study programmes

The study programmes eligible for the France South Africa scholarship programme are masters or PhD programmes in a French higher education institution located in France.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme, applicants must be:

• Born on or after 1 st  January 1994.
• A citizen of South Africa, Lesotho or Malawi.
• Enrolled in a French Higher Education institution (in due time) to pursue a Master’s degree or PhD.

The scholarship is granted for a given period to be spent in France,  matching the necessary time required to obtain the degree :

• For Master’s degree, the scholarship will be granted for a duration between 10 and 22 months. Master degree programmes are two years long. In some specific cases (Bachelor degree with Honours, for example), students may consider applying directly to M2 (second-year of the Master Programme). Only the hosting higher education institution is responsible for the admission. At the end of the first academic year, the Embassy of France will verify the success of the student to continue her/his studies in the second year of the Master’s programme.
• For PhDs, the scholarship will be granted for a maximum duration of 3 years. However, at the end of each academic year, in order to get the renewal of his/her grant, the recipient will have to justify the progress of their research work.
• In case of a PhD under co-supervision/cotutelle, periods of stay in France should be specified in a timeline. The scholarship will only be granted for the periods spent in France.
• For PhD and Master Degrees, if the curriculum requires course work which will take place outside of France, then applicants must specify all the details and his/her intentions, during the application process.

Scholarship types

Two schemes are possible under the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme:

A  full scholarship  by the Embassy of France. It includes:

• The status of a France Excellence scholarship holder which includes social security, priority for accessing student housing, visa fee exemption and assistance offered by Campus France Paris.
• A return flight ticket to France.
• A monthly allowance (approximately 850 euros for Master students and 1400 euros for PhD students).
• An additional individualized accommodation aid (approximately 150 euros/month) can be obtained from the French Government via the CAF.

In the second scheme of a  cost sharing scholarship , the monthly allowance will be provided fully or partially by a partner (a partner among the Advisory Board, a company, a higher education institution or any other funding agency). All the other benefits of a full scholarship will still be provided by the Embassy of France. This scheme can be proposed by the candidate during the application process  or by the Advisory Board for some of the laureates . In this last case, preselected applicants must comply with the instructions by the French Embassy in order to secure the co-funding.

Applicants are highly encouraged to look for other sources of financing from his/her own local or French higher education institution but also from private sector companies. Specific attention will be given to applicants who have found other sources of financing for their academic project. Nevertheless, the commitment of the parents or a family business is not considered as a co-funding.

At all times, applicants or laureates must inform the Embassy of France if they obtain any additional funding.

• The call for applications is open until 16 October 2023 at 23:59 SA time.
• A series of webinars will be organized in June 2023 to provide students with useful information to prepare their applications. Follow Campus France South Africa on social media for webinar information.
• Interview of the eligible candidates: November 2023.

NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship Postgraduate (Masters and Ph.D.) Scholarships 2023/2024 for young South African Graduates (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline: 11 July 2023

Together with the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa, the DAAD awards funding for Master and PhD degrees at South African Universities to South Africans citizens or permanent South African residents as part of its In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme.

The NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship is jointly awarded by the DAAD and the  NRF  to full-time Master and PhD students in South Africa in all fields of study at any South African university.

• A South African citizenship or a permanent South African residency is a requirement for the scholarship. Applicants must be 30 (Masters) or  32 (PhD) years of age or younger in the year of application.
• The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65%.
• The scholarships are intended to support honours, master’s and doctoral candidates to pursue studies in all areas of  Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities .
• Successful applicants will be funded either at  Full Cost of Study (FCS)  or  Partial Cost of Study (PCS) .
• The FCS funding will be awarded to South African citizens and Permanent Residents only, who are either  financially needy  (i.e., those whose combined household family income is less than or equals to R350 000 per annum),  living with a disability  or  exceptional academic achievers . However, the PCS funding will be awarded to  5% of international students  including South African citizens and Permanent Residents who could not be funded under FCS, but meet other minimum requirements for the NRF scholarship funding criteria.

Italian Government Scholarships 2023/2024 for Bachelors, Masters & Ph.D.study in Italy ( 900 Euros per month)

The  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation  ( MAECI )  offers grants   in favor of  foreign citizens* and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)**  for the  academic year 2023-24  in order to foster international cooperation in cultural, scientific and technological fields, to promote Italian language and culture and to support Italy’s economic system in the world (according to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions).

Grants are offered to complete study courses and research/training programs in public or legally recognized Italian educational institutions.

• Academic qualifications

Applications must only be submitted by foreign and Italian students living abroad (IRE)* holding an  appropriate academic qualification required to enroll to the Italian University/Institute  (more information on:  https://studyinitaly.esteri.it/en/Recognition-of-qualification ).

• Age requirements

Applicants for  Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programmes/ Italian Language and Culture advanced Courses  should have attained the age of majority and shall 

not exceed the age of  28 years  by the deadline of this call (born after June 9 th  1994), with the sole exception of renewals.

Applicants for  PhD Programmes  should have attained the age of majority and shall not exceed the age of  30 years  by the deadline of this call (born after June 9 th  1992), with the sole exception of renewals.

Grants for Courses of Higher Education in Arts, Music and Dance (AFAM) are awarded for  a period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months.

To be admitted to an Italian AFAM Institute, applicants need to meet the entry requirements and academic qualifications established by the relevant Institute.

• PhD program

Grants for a PhD program are awarded for a  period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months.

To be admitted to a PhD in Italy, applicants need to meet the entry requirements and academic qualifications established by the University.

They are also required to provide the admission letter to the PhD from the relevant Italian University. 

4. Research projects under academic supervision (Progetti in co-tutela)

Grants for a research under academic supervision are awarded for a  period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months.

This type of grants can be awarded to research projects carried out at Italian Research Institutions  (i.e. Italian Research Council – CNR, Italian National Institute of Health – ISS, Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics – INFN, Italian National Institute for Astrophysics – INAF, The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA, and others), public or recognized Universities, Museums and Archives.

Applicants must submit a research project, with the name and contacts (e-mail address) of their supervisor, and provide the invitation/acceptance letter from the host University/Institute.

WIKIAFRICA EDUCATION – HIGHER EDUCATION INITIATIVE

In collaboration with the Aurora Foundation, MAECI grantees from the African continent, speakers of African languages, ​​are offered the opportunity to take part in the WikiAfrica Higher Education Initiative. The program promotes the active participation of students with the aim of making specialized information on Africa available online. The initiative is developed by the Moleskine Foundation in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation and the Aurora Foundation.

HEALTH AND MEDICAL INSURANCE

Grantees will be covered by a collective health and medical insurance, contracted by MAECI, in case of illness or accident. The insurance is valid exclusively for the duration of the grant.

The winner of a MAECI scholarship, based on the starting date of the grant and the number of months indicated in the “Dichiarazione di assegnazione di borsa di studio” (Awarding Letter), will receive a monthly  amount of 900 euros  paid periodically every two or every three months to the personal current account, opened in his/her name, with an Italian banking Institution.

FUNDING PERIOD

• Grantees can benefit of the grant in a period of study starting  November 1 st , 2023  and ending by  October 31 st  2024 .

The Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures (WESAF) Doctoral Scholarship Programme 2023 for Young Africans

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE) inaugurated the  Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures  (WESAF) Doctoral Programme, in partnership with the  Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program  – a global initiative that enables learning and leadership development for talented young people, primarily young Africans, who face the highest barriers to accessing higher education. The  WESAF doctoral programme  aims to build sustainable development-focussed, interdisciplinary research capacity in partner higher education institutions in Africa.

The programme will recruit an initial cohort of 50 students from faculties from partner African higher education institutions to complete sustainability focused doctoral studies. Following an initial online Masters by Research, to front-load the development of critical research skills and delivered full time, at least 30 of these students will continue to complete PhDs either full-time or part-time. Through its cohort approach and emphasis on advanced research design and methods training, the programme will produce a powerful cohort of African research specialists committed to addressing Africa’s sustainability challenges on its own terms.

Eligibility The target group for scholarships is emerging researchers and academics who meet the requirements to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh.

To apply for this programme, applicants must: • have successfully completed a university degree that will qualify for entry into a Master’s programme at the University of Edinburgh (A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent). • demonstrate a level of English language competency that will enable one to succeed in the studies, regardless of nationality or country of residence. • have generally completed their last university degree not more than three and a half years ago and/or have demonstrable experience in academia/research at the time of application. • be nationals or permanent residents of an African country • be a) a staff member at one of the partner universities, OR b) a candidate being considered for teaching or research staff recruitment by the partner universities.

Female applicants, applicants from refugee and displaced backgrounds, and candidates from other less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The WESAF programme is in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Costs covered during the 12 months of the MSc by Research programme are:

FIG Foundation PhD Scholarships 2023 for Surveying/Geomatics PhD Candidates (4,000 euros grant)

The FIG Foundation will be providing scholarships of up to 4,000 euros plus possible funding for conference travel to  PhD students.

• Be studying for a PhD degree and registered solely in a surveying/geomatics academic programme that teaches surveying [1]  in a country listed by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy [2] ,
• have had a paper accepted by a  peer reviewed international journal  based on their doctoral research project; applicants should be the lead author, and the paper should be co-authored with their supervisor,
• should not have submitted their final thesis at the application deadline.

Imperial College London Shawki Saad PhD Scholarships 2023/2024 for PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa (Fully Funded)

Imperial College London has launched a new scholarship programme to support PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa.

The scholarship  will be for students joining the  Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering  and is supported by an endowed gift from the late Professor Shawki Saad, a Professor of Civil Engineering at Khartoum University in Sudan.

The programme will support four students and will fully cover the cost of tuition fees and support students with a stipend and travel costs. The new scholarship programme builds on a previous scholarship for students from Sudan.

The new scholarship programme was announced alongside a student prize for sustainability-related research in sub-Saharan Africa. The student prize and scholarship will help College efforts to tackle global systemic challenges in engineering and sustainability.

• This scholarship is open to research projects in areas including: Transport, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental and Water Resources, Structures, Systems, Materials, and Geotechnics.
• The Shawki Saad PhD Scholarship is a fully funded programme to support students ordinarily resident in Sub-Saharan Africa. The programme is funded by a generous endowed gift from the late Professor Shawki Saad, with one scholarship awarded each year for the next four years.
• The programme will fully cover the cost of overseas tuition fees for 3 years, a monthly living cost stipend (£19,668 2022/23) for 3.5 years and travel costs (flight and visa) for the successful applicant.

Embassy of France in Accra scholarships 2023/2024 for Ghanaian Students

Within the framework of academic cooperation and student mobility between France and Ghana for the 2023-2024 academic year, the French Embassy in Ghana is partnering with Scholarships Secretariat to offer full scholarships to Ghanaian students at Master’s and PhD levels on a merit and needs basis.

The eligibility criteria for 2023-2024 are as follows:

• Applicants must be of Ghanaian nationality.
• Age limit: Master’s degree = 35 years; PhD = 40 years for joint application, 45 years for ScholSec application alone.
• Fields of study: French as a foreign language, STEM, Health, Environment and Sustainable Development, Tourism, Archaeology and Heritage studies, Agriculture and Food Industry.
• First Class or Second Class Upper applicants on their degree will be given priority consideration.
• Mastery of French: French proficiency is not a requirement for application (except for French as a Foreign Language).
• Preferably 2 years post qualification experience for PhD applicants.
• Completed National Service.

The PTDF Overseas (Masters & Ph.D.) Scholarship Scheme 2023/2024 for study in France, Germany, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), the Federal Government agency with the mandate of developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the Overseas MSc and PhD scholarships to specific programmes at selected institutions under its PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The scheme was developed to offer candidates the opportunity to benefit from a diversified pool of knowledge and the facilities offered by world-class institutions across the globe. Under it, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at partner institutions. The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees  (where applicable) , and the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses.

• For the 2023/2024 award, applications will be limited to PTDF partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia where it feels the scholarship’s high standards can be maintained and the objectives of the scheme will be best served.

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) PhD Scholarships 2023 in tax and development.

Application Deadline: 15 March 2023

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) is a research centre aiming to improve tax policy and administration in lower-income countries through collaborative research and engagement. The ICTD’s primary base is the  Institute of Development Studies  (IDS), at the  University of Sussex  in Brighton (UK). The ICTD is funded by the British and Norwegian governments and by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

• To be eligible for funding, PhD projects should focus on taxation in African and/or south Asian countries.
• Within the broad area, candidates can focus on any issue of their own interest.
• While projects do not need to fall within one of our existing research programmes, candidates may find it helpful to review the research portfolio of the ICTD 
• The ICTD will fund up to four PhD students from countries in Africa and South Asia to start in September 2023. Students will receive full scholarships including university fees, a stipend in line with UK research council funding ( currently 17,668 GBP per year ), and other benefits such as funds to attend conferences, to cover visa costs and part of relocation expenses.
• In addition to financial support, successful applicants will benefit from being fully embedded in the ICTD team and networks. As such, they are expected to play an active role in the life of the Centre, for example by participating in team and research meetings, external events, and by contributing to blogs or papers for ICTD publications series.
• Successful candidates will be based at IDS or a department of the University of Sussex.
• At least one of their supervisors will be an ICTD Fellow.
• They will be expected to spend at least the first and third year at IDS/Sussex in person, to facilitate connections with the ICTD team and participation in training opportunities.

• Academic quality of the research proposal . Some of the elements that the reviewers will consider, amongst others, are: is the topic relevant to policy and research? Is it sufficiently linked to existing knowledge? Are the methods appropriate and robust? Is the proposed study feasible?
• Candidates’ profiles, including skills and experience.  Preference will be given to candidates with relevant work experience. A good result in a Master’s degree is also essential for admission to the PhD programme at Sussex/IDS.
• Fit with supervisors’ and ICTD’s research interests.  Availability of supervisors with relevant research interests and knowledge of relevant methods. We will also consider how projects complement ICTD’s research portfolio.

Applications for the ICTD scholarship should be submitted using the  dedicated form  by  15 March 2023  (deadline 23.59 BST). Applicants are  not  required to have submitted an application for a PhD place at the University of Sussex before applying for the ICTD scholarship, nor to have identified a potential supervisor. ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship 2023 for students/scholars from developing countries

According to an agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) for the advancement of science in developing countries, up to 40 students/scholars from developing countries will be sponsored to study in China for doctoral degrees for up to 4 years.

The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents (hereinafter referred to as  the ANSO Scholarship ) was formally launched in 2019 with the goal of training and cultivating young scientists from all over the world. The ANSO Scholarship supports 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students every year to pursue postgraduate education at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) or institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) around China.

This year, a sub-category of the ANSO Scholarship: the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship is being officially launched. Echoing the priority of TWAS/UNESCO, special (not exclusive) consideration will be given to two target groups:  Least Development Countries (LDCs) and women . Up to 40 PhD students from developing countries in the South will be selected by TWAS/UNESCO into this category every year.

CAS, the leading founding member of ANSO, is the major sponsor of the ANSO Scholarship. TWAS and UNESCO, both founding members of ANSO, provide part of the funding for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship awardees. ANSO welcomes all members and parties who are interested in creating a more diversified scholarship program together.

TaiwanICDF’s International Higher Education (Undergraduate, Masters and PhD) Scholarship Program 2023/2024 for study in Taiwan (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2023.

The TaiwanICDF provides scholarships for higher education and has developed undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. programs in cooperation with renowned partner universities in Taiwan. The TaiwanICDF has established the Taiwan International Cooperation Alliance (TICA) with 22 partner universities, setting up an operational platform under this TICA framework to manage and improve the scholarship program. In 2023, there are 33 programs offered for TaiwanICDF Scholarship application.

• Be a citizen of a country on the List of Countries Eligible for TaiwanICDF Scholarship, and satisfy any specific criteria established by his or her country and/or government of citizenship.
• Neither be a national of the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor an overseas compatriot student.
• Satisfy the admission requirements of the partner university to which he or she has applied to study under a TaiwanICDF scholarship.
• Be able to satisfy all requirements for a Resident Visa (Code: FS) set by the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) set by the Ministry of the Interior, of the ROC (Taiwan) government (this means that the TaiwanICDF has the right to revoke a scholarship offered if an applicant cannot satisfy the visa requirements).
• Upon accepting a TaiwanICDF scholarship, not hold any other ROC (Taiwan) government-sponsored scholarship (such as the Taiwan Scholarship) in the same academic year in which the TaiwanICDF scholarship would be due to commence.
• Not be applying for another TaiwanICDF scholarship in unbroken succession to apply for a 2023 scholarship, applicants who have already held a TaiwanICDF scholarship, MOFA’s Taiwan Scholarship or an MOE scholarship must have graduated before July 31, 2022.
• Have never had any scholarship revoked by any ROC (Taiwan) government agency or related institution, nor been expelled from any Taiwanese university.

The total scholarship, including airfare (round-trip), housing, tuition, credit fees, insurance, textbook costs and a monthly allowance will be provided by the TaiwanICDF to each student within his/her given award period. The scholarship is itemized as follows:

• Airfare: The TaiwanICDF shall arrange your most-direct flights to and from Taiwan with Economy Class tickets.
• Housing: All students must reside in the student dormitories.
• Tuition fee: The TaiwanICDF will cover the tuition fee as required by the student’s university.
• Credit fees: Credit fees vary with the number of credits registered. Credit fees will also be covered as required by the student’s university.
• Insurance: While in Taiwan, in addition to the mandatory student safety insurance set by the Ministry of Education, each student must be insured for accidental and necessary medical coverage. Insurance fees will be covered for the entire duration of the program
• Book costs: Purchasing textbooks as required by the instructors shall be subject to the approval of the director of the student’s institute
• Allowance: (1). Undergraduate’s Program: Each student shall receive NT$12,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account. (2). Master’s Program: Each student shall receive NT$15,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account. (3). Ph.D. Program: Each student shall receive NT$17,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme (GOI-IES) 2023/2024 for study in Ireland (Funded)

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) is pleased to issue the 2023 Call under the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme . Under the initiative 60 scholarships will be provided for one year study at Masters or PhD levels to successful candidates who have an offer of a place at an eligible Irish higher education institution.

The offer is open to students from non-EU/EEA countries and is applicable to all fields of study.

The aim of the 2023 GOI-IES scheme is to reflect Ireland’s engagement in target partner countries. The scheme is operated in the higher education sector and funded in partnership between the Government of Ireland and the higher education institutions (HEIs). Scholarships are branded as prestigious awards reflecting the core messages about Ireland as a centre of international education, research and innovation. It is expected that for every scholarship awardee, awareness of Ireland among many more potential students as a location of excellence in international will rise.

Candidate profile Candidates must demonstrate:

• A record of outstanding academic achievement
• Excellent communication skills;
• Participation in extra curriculum activities. For example: humanitarian work; politics either local, national or international; arts; sports;
• A strong rationale for pursuing their study in Ireland that indicates how a GOI-IES aligns with their longer-term goals. Benefits for students: Scholarships must be regarded as highly desirable and valueadding to individuals’ subsequent lives and careers. In view of this, the GOI-IES will be awarded: • to high calibre higher education students from non-EU/EEA countries. • to students studying in Ireland for a period of one year.

Students who are successful will receive:

• A €10,000 stipend for one year’s study
• A full fee waiver of all tuition and other registration costs at the higher education institution

The HEA will award a scholarship to the student (through the HEI that the student is attending) amounting to €10,000 for one study year. This fund is directed at covering student costs and living expenses. The scholarship may be for: ▪ one year of a taught master’s degree programme or; ▪ one year of a research programme (e.g. one year of a 2-year research masters or a 3-4-year PhD programme).

• The scholarship stipend will be transferred to the host higher education institution (HEI) of the successful applicant. The HEI will then put in place a system to transfer the funds to the awardee.
• The HEI will be required to give a FULL fee waiver to the student for the scholarship year (i.e. tuition fee and registration charge are waived). This is the minimum matching funding requirement that institutions will be required to make to the scholarship scheme.
• It is expected that a total of 60 scholarships will be funded by the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships for the academic year 2023/2024.
• The call for applications will issue 14 December 2022 and the centralised application system is now live and accepting applications.
• The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on 24 March 2023 (Irish Time). Late applications will not be accepted.

ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship 2023 for students/scholars from developing countries (Fully Funded study in China)

The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents (hereinafter referred to as  the ANSO Scholarship ) was formally launched in 2019 with the goal of training and cultivating young scientists from all over the world. The ANSO Scholarship supports 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students every year to pursue postgraduate education at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) or institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) around China.  Please find the full Call for the ANSO Scholarship here .

This year, a sub-category of the ANSO Scholarship: the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship is being officially launched. Echoing the priority of TWAS/UNESCO, special (not exclusive) consideration will be given to two target groups:  Least Development Countries (LDCs) and women . Up to 40 PhD students from developing countries in the South will be selected by TWAS/UNESCO into this category every year.

Eligibility Criteria

All awardees are required to finish centralized training in Chinese language, Chinese culture and all required credits as well as practical research and completion of degree thesis at colleges and schools of USTC/UCAS or CAS institutes.

Any PhD awardee who fails the qualification test or annual assessment will face the consequences including:

•     Termination of his/her scholarship;

•     Discontinuity of his/her doctoral study;

•     Being provided with a certificate of attendance for the period of study undertaken in China but not a formal doctoral degree.

Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships 2023/2024 (for least developed countries and fragile states) to Study in the UK (Fully Funded)

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from least developed countries and fragile States in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

Funded by the  UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries: 

Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Eligibility Requirements: To apply for these scholarships, candidates must:

• Be available to start academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2023
• By September 2023, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree (2:2) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)*.
• NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in your home country before September/October 2023
• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship
• Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format

Scholarship Worth:

• A Commonwealth Scholarship covers fees, approved fares, and personal maintenance. Other scholarships, awards, or bursaries that cover the same costs may not be held concurrently.
• For the CSC to administer your application effectively and efficiently after you have submitted, it will be necessary to create a record in your name. Tenure and Placement

• Scholarships are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution with which the CSC has a part-funding agreement for a specific programme of research for 36 months of full-time study only.
• Scholarships are to obtain one degree; funding will not be extended to enable candidates to complete a qualification in addition to or higher than that for which the selection was made.
• Scholarships are made in respect of  full-time study only  and no other course of study may be undertaken at the same time.

How to Apply:

Candidates must apply to one of the following nominating agencies as well as to the CSC. Nominating agencies will then put forward candidates to the CSC.  The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships :

Each nominating agency oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria.  Candidates must check with the nominating agency for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria. Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2023/2024 for Foreign Students & Artists to study in Switzerland (Fully Funded)

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

Types of scholarship

• The  research scholarship  is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level ( research fellowship ,  PhD ,  Postdoc ). Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
• Art scholarships  are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland ( arts ). Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

Eligibility:

Candidates for the University Scholarships must:

• Hold a university degree (Bachelors/Masters) on commencement of the scholarship.
• Be able to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
• Contact the institution and/or the professor supervising their period of research. Universities may request supplementary information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
• Be under the age of 35 (born on or after 1 January 1978).
• Be suitably proficient in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian, or English) in order to draw full benefit from their studies in Switzerland.

Scholarship Benefits:

• The scholarship covers a monthly payment, exemption of tuition fees, health insurance, airfare, special lodging allowance, etc.

Applications are subject to  preliminary selection  by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The  short-listed applications  are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

• Candidate profile
• Quality of the research project or artistic work
• Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

The FCS will select scholarship holders for the 2023-24 academic year by the end of May 2023. Scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year will be advertised online from August 2023.

NZ-GRADS New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarships 2022/2023 for study in New Zealand (Fully Funded)

New Zealand in support of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) , is pleased to offer a PhD scholarship for students from developing countries.

This scholarship offers the possibility for students from developing countries to come to New Zealand to work on research projects related to agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation.

For this special round, four PhD projects aligned with New Zealand research programmes have been selected:

• Assessing soil carbon changes associated with land management and land use change .
• Long-term soil phosphorus fertiliser implications for soil nitrogen cycling and Greenhouse Gas emission.
• Plant and plant/microbiome traits impacting N 2 O emissions from soil.
• Climate Neutral Farms (ClieNFarms).

The following criteria are non-negotiable:

• Your PhD study must be conducted in New Zealand (not from a distance)

Harvard University Academy Scholars Programme 2022 for international PhD Students

This program is open to recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences.

The Academy Scholars Program of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their academic careers whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline with a command of the language and knowledge or expertise of countries or regions outside of the United States and/or Canada. Their scholarship should span traditional disciplinary divisions and elucidate comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, past or present.

• These awards are open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degree (within two years of the August 1, 2023, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
• Scholars nearing dissertation completion must be able to submit degree conferral documentation issued by their university registrar’s office by June 30, 2023, for an August 1, 2023, start date.
• Individuals who hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible to apply.
• Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments with an annual stipend of $75,000, with the two years to be completed within a three-year window.
• Year 1 of the fellowship must be taken up no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. Delays or deferrals in the start of Year 1 are not permitted.
• Between Years 1 and 2, Academy Scholars may apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months), either to accept or to continue with a tenure-track teaching appointment but for no other reason.
• Academy Scholars may not accept other sources of funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.

JSPS RONPAKU Dissertation PhD Program 2022/2023

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has been carrying out the RONPAKU (Dissertation PhD) Program since 1978. The aim of this program is to provide tutorial and financial support for promising researchers in the countries of Asia and Africa or other specified countries among all those listed as Japanese ODA recipients who wish to obtain a PhD degree from a Japanese university through the submission of a dissertation without matriculating a doctoral course.

Grantees under the program ( RONPAKU fellows) are required to conduct their dissertation research under the joint supervision of an advisor in Japan and an advisor in their home country, and are expected to obtain their PhD degree within a maximum period of three years. RONPAKU fellows are required to visit a Japanese university to conduct research under the direct supervision of their advisor in Japan. The advisor may visit the RONPAKU fellow’s home university or research institution when deemed necessary to supervise the fellow’s research together with his/her home advisor

ASRIC-UEMF PhD Scholarships 2022/2023 for African Students (Fully Funded)

The  African Scientific, Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC)  is a special advisory body to the African Union mandated to implement the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024) and to promote scientific research and innovation in order to address the challenges of Africa’s socio-economic development.

The 1 st  and 2 nd  Calls for PhD scholarships for African students were successfully announced for the academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, where eligible candidates passed through a rigorous screening process and were awarded the scholarship. In furtherance to the success of the 1 st  and 2 nd  Calls, the ASRIC and UEMF are hereby launching the 3 rd  Call for the year 2022.

• Must be a national of one of the African Union Member States;
• Applicants must be less than 35 years of age at the end date of this call;
• Must have Master’s Degree (in science or engineering), Diploma or Engineering Diploma or any other equivalent diploma (baccalaureate + 5); and
• The candidate must demonstrate remarkable ability and devotion along with experiences in conducting research in the selected field of study.

The ASRIC and UEMF  are offering 10 scholarship slots for the academic year 2022-2023 to African PhD students to carry out their doctoral research work at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF), Morocco. The duration of the study and that of the scholarship is  three years .

• The scholarship includes; tuition fees of about $9,000, an annual return ticket from your home country with a maximum contribution of $1,000 during summer vacation, and stipend allowance of $1,000 monthly for 11 months every year.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s selection procedure for scholarship applicants consists of three stages: – Submission of written application documents, including a personal reference on your social commitment and an expert reference from a university lecturer or, in the case of new students – a schoolteacher. The expert reference, preferably in a sealed envelope, may be submitted with the applications or submitted separately by the referee. – An interview with a liaison lecturer, usually held at your university or near where you live (telephone interviews may also be held). – Attendance at a selection workshop in Berlin consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion. At each stage only a small group is selected for the next stage. You will be informed in writing of the decision reached at each stage of the selection procedure.

RSIF PhD Scholarships Call for Mozambique and Senegal Nationals (Fully Funded)

The  Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET)  is an African-led initiative with the goal of strengthening skills in the Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology to further socio-economic transformation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The  Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (RSIF)  is the flagship program of PASET. RSIF focuses on transformative technologies that have a far-reaching positive impact on society. It is funded by contributions from African governments, the World Bank and the Government of Korea and facilitated by the  International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology ( icipe )  in Nairobi, Kenya.

RSIF aims to train quality PhD students and post-doctoral researchers to address the human resource gap of highly qualified specialists in the fields of applied sciences, engineering, and technology (ASET) and to contribute to improving research and innovation capacities in those fields in SSA. RSIF also supports the strengthening of research and innovation ecosystems at selected African Host Universities (AHU) by providing funding through competitive grants. RSIF supports training, research and innovation in five Priority Thematic Areas: (1) ICT including big data and artificial intelligence, (2) Food security and agri-business, (3) Minerals, mining and materials engineering, (4) Energy including renewables and (5) Climate change.

To be eligible for the RSIF PhD Scholarship, applicants must:

• Be a citizen of Mozambique or Senegal.
• Have a relevant master’s degree in one of the fields of study.
• Meet the specific admission requirements of the RSIF African Host University where they would like to pursue a PhD (see links to the AHU PhD programs below; or go to the  RSIF website  .
• Be willing to enroll full-time in a PhD program at an RSIF African Host University in the 2021-2022 academic year.
• Should not be holding another PhD scholarship, or currently be enrolled in any PhD Program when applying to the RSIF PhD scholarship.
• Be willing to spend 6-24 months in a ‘sandwich’ research placement at an international partner institute.
• Demonstrate that their research goals are well aligned to the Priority Thematic Areas and contribute to Africa’s development.
• RSIF PhD Scholarships are open to Mozambique and Senegal candidates interested in receiving international-quality PhD training.
• Applicants apply for a scholarship to conduct PhD research in a PASET Priority Thematic Area.
• Applicants apply to the  icipe  online portal indicating their preference for a PhD program at approved AHUs (a current list of RSIF AHUs and PhD programs is available  here ).
• The AHU and RSIF selection panels will review applications and make recommendation to the PASET EB for scholarship awards.
• On award of RSIF Scholarships, awardees must immediately complete registration to the selected RSIF AHU.

The duration of the PhD Scholarship is 3 to 4 years, including 6-24 months in a ‘sandwich’ training placement at an international partner university, research institute or private company. Priority for the scholarships will be given to women and existing young academic faculty who do not have a PhDs. The RSIF scholarships will be awarded in June 2022.

• The RSIF PhD Scholarship covers university tuition and related fees, competitive stipend to cover living expenses, travel, medical insurance, and research costs.
• RSIF PhD scholars will be supported to spend 6-24 months in a ‘sandwich’ training at an international partner university, research institute or private company.
• RSIF PhD scholars become part of a growing network of emerging leaders in ASET fields in SSA.
• RSIF PhD scholars will have access to RSIF competitive research grants upon completion of their PhD.

MORE ABOUT THE UKZN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

Scholarships will be awarded to 4 students – 1 in each of the above colleges. Scholarships will be awarded for 1 academic year at a time, and may be renewed for a further 2 years, based on satisfactory progress submitted by the student and the students supervisor.

The value of the scholarships is determined each year and will be estimated based on the cost of a year of postgraduate study. The renewable value may vary.

Scholars will be selected based on the quality of the previous academic record, with the most emphasis placed on the most recent (usually masters) record. Consideration will also be given to the time taken to complete the masters qualification.  

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UKZN SCHOLARSHIPS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

• You must be studying full-time towards a Doctoral qualification, in 2022
• You must be studying at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in one of the colleges stated above
• You must have your research proposals accepted by your relevant College’s Higher Degrees committee (minuted confirmation must be submitted with your application) (candidates who have NOT yet submitted their doctoral theses for examination are usually NOT considered for the scholarship award)
• You must be ranked within the top 5 percent in these categories: intellectual strength, research aptitude and purposefulness as motivated by evidence and reasoned argument by Heads/ Leaders
• Candidates who have evidence of publication(s) in the relevant research area will receive preference

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In Canada and the United States, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

What does the Google PhD Fellowship include?

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

• US $12K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

What should be included in an application? What language should the application be in?

All application materials should be submitted in English.

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file:

• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student's primary PhD program advisor
• Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)

How do I apply for the PhD Fellowship Program? Who should submit the applications? Can students apply directly for a Fellowship?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia: students may apply directly during the application period.

Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States : students cannot apply directly to the program; they must be nominated by an eligible university during the application period.

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

Australia and New Zealand : universities may nominate up to two eligible students.

Canada and the United States : Universities may nominate up to four eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability.

Africa, East Asia and Europe : Universities may nominate up to three eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage the additional nominee who self-identifies as a woman.

How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

• Candidate is a South African citizen

• Candidate has a Master’s degree in health or social sciences (if the Master’s was obtained from outside of South Africa, it must be SAQA accredited at the time of application)

Catto MSc & PhD Scholarships 2022/2023: The Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh is pleased to announce the availability of one full scholarship for suitable female applicants from Africa to study for an MSc in Africa and International Development and subsequent PhD in African Studies or, where more suitable, go directly into a PhD.

About the Award: Successful applicants will start their studies in September 2022. These Scholarships were made possible through generous funding from the Stephen Gordon Catto Charitable Trust and will cover full fees as well as a monthly maintenance stipend throughout the one-year MSc and subsequent three years of PhD study. These scholarships have been designed as a combined package in order to enable those who may not feel they have sufficient research experience to embark on a PhD to get that grounding with an MSc. The MSc year helps build a bridge between undergraduate studies and the PhD. We hope the combined package of support encourages some who may not have thought a PhD was in reach to re-consider. A key goal of the scholarships is to diversify the scholars from the African continent who contribute original and important research to African Studies.

Eligibility: To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be a female who is normally domiciled in an African country listed  here .
• have received an excellent undergraduate degree (minimum of a high 2.1) in the social sciences from an accredited university in Africa (a Masters degree achieved with distinction will be an advantage for those wishing to go directly into a PhD).
• not have previously received a degree from a university outside Africa (with the exception of current or former students of The University of Edinburgh).
• demonstrate commitment to studying for a PhD in African Studies.
• demonstrate leadership potential (broadly defined), and intention to maximize the impact of their research.
• have submitted an application to study for the MSc in Africa and International Development and/or the   PhD in African Studies at the University of Edinburgh by 15 April 2022.

As a key goal of the scholarship is to diversify the scholars from the African continent who contribute original and important research to African Studies, this scholarship is only open to scholars normally domiciled in African countries.

At this session, we will provide information on the Centre, what we are looking for in applications, and details of the dedicated support and mentorship that would be available for the awardee. This could include family support where appropriate.

Postgraduate Bursaries in South Africa

You may have just completed your undergraduate qualification and are looking to advance your studies or you may have been working for a while and are looking to get back into the academic world. 

If you don’t have the financial means, then you will need to consider a bursary or another form of funding. We have collected a number of options to help you fund your postgraduate studies. 

If you have a solid academic history that you have maintained throughout over the duration of your studies, you may qualify to apply for a postgraduate bursary. 

Bursaries often cover a variety of additional costs involved in studying such as textbooks, laptops, the living cost for meals and accommodation.

As Director of Research, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and Professor of Microbiology at Mountain Top University, Prof. Stella Ifeanyi Smith has made groundbreaking contributions to medical research. Her pioneering work on Helicobacter pylori, a pathogen causing ulcers, has profoundly impacted Africa and beyond. Recognised for her exceptional contributions, Prof. Smith has been elected as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS), Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (FAMedS), and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS). She has also been appointed as the sole African Consultant for the European Maastricht VI/Florence Italy Consensus project and the Real-World Gastritis Initiative ( RE.GA.IN ) project, comprising 29 countries and 42 members. In 2022, Prof. Smith launched the African Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (AHMSG), serving as its Founding President. Her work has garnered international recognition with an impressive 206 publications and a Google Scholar citation of 4,954. In this exclusive interview with  MARY NNAH , Prof. Smith shares her remarkable journey, insights, and experiences, offering a glimpse into the life of a true trailblazer in medical research

Y our remarkable achievements have earned you esteemed recognition.How do you feel about being elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (FAMedS) and, most recently, a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS) ?

Indeed, I feel great. I believe that this is a confirmation of hard work over the years. These Fellow awards do not come without hard work and recognition of your area of specialty over the years and I must say it has been God. I acknowledge unashamedly that I am what I am by the grace of God. If it was left to man, I would not have been able to achieve this much.

Did you ever envisage that you will get to this level of professional accomplishment when the journey started in 1999?

Honestly, I didn’t. I never even knew that working with the pathogen, Helicobacter pylori would take me to the level it has taken me now. I remember the vogue then was HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria, and then more recently covid-19 and some viral haemorrhagic fevers which were more promising due to the heavy funding. For H. pylori, it has always been a neglected disease till date, but by the grace of God and consistency alongside my collaborators, the African Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group was established. We need to make an impact in proper H. pylori diagnosis and management and get stakeholder involvement as well as political good will, hence the first scientific conference which is geared towards these objectives will have international experts coming to Cape Town, South Africa in August for this conference. This is all because one person, yours truly, had a dream to establish this group to aid proper diagnosis and management of H. pylori the causative agent of ulcer.

Can you briefly take us through the journey of your career progression and probably the challenges?

I came into the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research through Dr. D. K. Olukoya was a young, single lady who was interested in researching diseases of public health importance and particularly those diseases that are not generally studied and for which much attention is not given to it. I resumed work immediately after I obtained my MSc the same year and started under the leadership of Dr. D. K. Olukoya who was the Head of Division of Genetics and Blood Disorders.

It was under his headship/tutelage, I had my growing interest in molecular epidemiology and with particular interest on medically important pathogens. I rose through the ranks today to be Director of Research in 2013 and my interest in Helicobacter pylori developed after my one year pre-doctoral in the UK in 1994. I actually started working on H. pylori since 1999 and that has been my story with H. pylori for which I decided to focus on this neglected pathogen in Africa as a whole not Nigeria and that has won me several research grants and opportunities to showcase my work within and outside the country. It was my German Research Foundation (DFG) funding for 7 years that enabled me recognition in this area, to the glory of God. This doggedness in working with H. pylori in spite of all big funding in other areas led me to the formation of the African Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group for which I have been the founding President since 2022. I currently have 10 African countries as Board members and 90 ordinary members from 17 African countries.

I have had several challenges along the journey but the fact is that those challenges bring out the best in me.

Your achievements have also led to a notable distinction: you are the sole African representative in the esteemed Maastricht VI and  RE.GA.IN  projects.

I will say my interest in H. pylori and not shifting has given me this recognition with God on my side. I have worked with this germ since 1999 and have been consistent with it. Others have either worked on it for a brief period and dropped it due to the difficulty in working with the germ aside from the expensive reagents needed to work with the germ. I was fortunate to get German funding for seven years and prior to the German funding I got International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) funding for 3 years to collaborate with a lady scientist from Venezuela and that enabled me to learn some cheaper methods of isolating the germ. I also got two post-doctoral positions in Germany and France before the ICGEB grant. My recognition has been due to the several consistent publications I have had on this germ.

Your tireless efforts to combat H. pylori and develop effective ulcer treatments have culminated in the establishment of the African Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (AHMSG) in 2022. Share with us the journey that led to this milestone.

 I was interested in the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of this ulcer causing germ that was at the same time neglected in Africa and so I invited some Africans via email and shared my vision with them and they all accepted and noted it was time for us to do the right thing as Africans in the appropriate diagnosis and management of this important germ instead of working in silos. Most people will not have heard the name H. pylori but when you mention it causes ulcers, they understand the word ulcer, rather than H. pylori. I am therefore seizing this opportunity to call on all those who are interested in partnering with us as well as funding young investigators to look for alternative cures to this ulcer causing germ to kindly partner with us as we are willing and ready to work with them. Our Group has 16 board members from Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Tanzania, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Zambia, Namibia and DRC. Our first scientific conference will hold in Cape Town, South Africa in August this year. Our keynote speaker will be Prof. Peter Malfertheiner, a globally respected Gastroenterologist and founding member of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group.

Can you tell us more about the AHMSG conference coming up in Cape Town, South Africa?

The Cape Town conference scheduled for August will be the first ever gathering of researchers, both experts as well as young investigators who will come together to discuss their various research interests at the meeting. It is also an opportunity to network as well. Some of our speakers will be coming from Europe, US and Japan, and notable amongst them is Prof. Peter Malfertheiner who is the brain behind European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group and they have been functional for 38 years now. Other Europeans attending our conference include Prof. Marcis Leja from Latvia, Dr. Christian Schulz from Germany. From the US is Dr. Christian Abnet, while Prof. Yoshio Yamaoko will be coming from Japan. We also have a team from Richen HongKong Sight, Inqaba Biotec, and American Molecular laboratories and others who are supporting us in this conference. It promises to be an interesting conference that would put heads together in forging forwards, as we look at proper diagnosis and management of H. pylori in Africa. During this conference, I will be handing over the Presidency of the Group to Prof. Mashiko Setshedi, a South African.

Over the years, you have been known for organising hands-on-training workshops, can you take us into your hands-on-training programme and the impact it has made?

 I started my molecular biology hands-on-training workshop in 2009. This followed my post-doctoral fellowships in France and Germany. I realised that molecular biology techniques were not common then and I was interested in building the capacity of the young ones as well as interested participants who comprised university lecturers, Medical Laboratory Scientists and other stakeholders from different geo-political zones in the country. In the first two years, I had a large turn out of participants that were so eager to learn these techniques and as the years grew, other groups started their own hands-on-training workshops. In order to train the young ones, I started training the final year 400L students of Biological and Biochemistry departments of Mountain Top University annually on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) some three years ago.

Why is your laboratory referred to as a German laboratory?

My laboratory is referred to as a German laboratory because most (85%) of the equipment I have in my laboratory was bought wiith the German funding by by either the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation or the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Why do you have a strong passion about research and can you give us insight into how it all started?

I have a strong passion for research because I am driven by the need to succeed and to find out the answer at the end of the research. It all started under the tutelage of Dr. D. K. Olukoya who was the Head of Division of Genetics and Blood Disorders and being someone who was inclined in the medical and allied field; I was introduced to molecular epidemiology by Dr. D. K. Olukoya and following my pre-doctoral stay in Manchester, UK, I was all the more interested in conducting research in the medical microbiology with a specialty on bacteriology. My research journey started in 1988 after my MSc and I enrolled for a PhD on the bacterial pathogen causing diarrhoea (Campylobacter), itself a neglected diarrhoeal disease- causing pathogen. I was able then in-spite of the low funding/scholarship opportunities to obtain an European Union scholarship which funded the whole PhD work, with one year in the UK and two years in Nigeria. I was really blessed to have that opportunity and we were just two that were given the scholarship in my Institute then. The second person (a guy) ‘japad’ and never came back, but I did to the surprise of many people who thought I would never come back. Honestly, I have always been an ambassador for Nigeria and proudly Nigerian wherever I go. Nigerians are a special breed of people who do not take no for an answer and are goal getters.

Since I got back in 1994, I have looked at various ways of making an impact in my society and the academic world at large and God has been faithful.

What was your growing up like?

Growing up was really good. Although I had no father figure because he died when I was just a year old, my late mother did everything to make sure that her two girls were happy. I believe that also made me all the more determined to be a better and successful person in life. My mother gave us all she could while ensuring that we were not spoiled children. For example, although we had house help most of my stay with my mum before getting married, I have been married for close to 32 years but had house help for only two years. My husband and I do the house work and what we cannot do we leave till another time.

Who are your role models?

My role model was my late mother, Mrs. Stella Okwui Ebigwei who was a widow. She instilled discipline, hard work and fear and reverence of God in my sister and I and so I had a focus that I would not derail but be a notable person someday. She was my strong supporter and always called me ‘Star’.

My other role models are Bishop Mike and Peace Okonkwo, my parents in the Lord, who always prophesied over us and taught us about integrity and having a giving spirit.

My other role model is Professor D. K. Olukoya whom I call my dearest ‘Egbon’ and he is my mentor. He introduced me to the world of molecular epidemiology and he is my strong supporter and always prays for my success as well.

What does fashion mean to you since you don’t apply make up or use attachment to your hair?

Fashion is looking good and natural and without all the attachment. I like long hair, that is why my hair is long, although I don’t give much time to it. In terms of my dressing my husband has to approve of my clothes otherwise I wouldn’t wear them. I generally dress in moderation.

How did you meet your husband?

I met my husband when I was doing my PhD and that was actually in church. He told me directly he was not interested in a long relationship or courtship but marriage and under six months we were married and have been for close to 32 years and still counting to the glory of God. My husband is God-sent, he is the one that pushes me to get to where I am. Some men would not even want their wives to outshine them, but my hubby doesn’t mind. He always encourages me to achieve my goals and beyond and he assists so much with the house chores and that is why we do not have any house help. He doesn’t prevent me from traveling for official purposes. All I need to do is make sure that I have cooked food and kept for him and he is good to go.

What would you consider as your most challenging and most inspiring period?

My most challenging period was when I lost my mother and it dawned on me that I had no parents on planet Earth. My most inspiring period comes when I see those that I have trained doing well.

From the Director's Desk

The School continues to grow and our mission to develop the next generation of Africa’s ethical leaders remains steadfast. The launch of the Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre and School of Public Governance in May 2024 was a defining moment in the history of the School.  We are grateful for the many messages of support received on this occasion including from  the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene and judge Albie Sachs for the Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre and School of Public Governance. The Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre and School of Public Governance will serve emerging leaders from across the African continent. The precinct, which will be designed through an architectural design competition, will offer interactive public art installations, contemplative walkways, and meeting areas designed to provide for reflection on the life and times of Nelson Mandela. The concept of leadership is engaging citizens and the political classes  around the world as elections are taking place and many countries are moving backwards, sliding into more populist and authoritarian regimes and losing sight of the values that Nelson Mandela taught and demonstrated in his own life of public service.   It is with this understanding that we have launched a leadership series this year that has gathered a lot of interest on the continent. The School aspires to become a centre of debate and dialogue on Leadership and Democratic Governance - providing guidance and insights to the next generation of African leaders. During the first half of 2024, the School is engaging with Universities and think tanks on partnerships to build innovative theoretical frameworks and approaches that will deepen our understanding of Leadership for transformative changes needed to address today’s complex challenges. In this context, the School has joined a global research project on Democracy and Development led by the Central European University Democratic Institute (CEU-DI) and has also partnered with the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) to launch a Nelson Mandela Leadership for Social Change executive education programme. In addition, the School has also partnered with the French development agency (AfD) to build a network of think tanks and Universities on the African continent.  Thank you for your ongoing support, we are excited about what lies ahead. We aim to expand our academic programmes, policy-driven research and to strengthen our networks across the continent.

Dr Musa Nxele is the newly appointed academic director

Dr Musa Nxele took the reins of the Academic Directorship on 1 June 2024. Dr Nxele holds a PhD in Economics from the Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a PhD in Development Policy and Practice from the University of Cape Town. He teaches the political economy of policymaking and development. His research currently focuses on the politics of private investment and the economics of natural resources. Congratulations to Dr Nxele on this significant position. With his thoughtful and dedicated leadership, the Academic programme is growing exponentially across Africa. In 2025, the School will launch its newly designed PGDip in Development Policy and Practice online to make it more accessible and affordable.

Richard is a South Sudanese national who has devoted his entire career to providing high-quality and effective leadership in the field of humanitarian and social development. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Coalition for Humanity (CH), a prominent non-profit organisation dedicated to addressing livelihood challenges faced by the people of South Sudan. Richard is a PhD candidate after completing his Master of Development Policy and Practice (MDPP) at the Nelson Mandela School. It is encouraging to see how Richard effectively applies the skills and knowledge acquired from MDPP to drive the growth and development of his individual staff members, granting them sufficient autonomy and guidance to challenge their performance limits. This approach not only contributes to the professional development of the team but also aligns with the broader mission of the organisation, Coalition for Humanity – to create resilient communities that can thrive amidst challenges. His journey exemplifies a harmonious blend of leadership, academia, and a profound commitment to the well-being of communities in South Sudan.

The School is a convening space for policy-driven dialogues

One of the objectives at the School is to provide critical thinking on the challenges of democratic governance in Africa by providing evidence-based insights to inform policy decisions and promote informed public discourse. During the first half of 2024 the Nelson Mandela School convened several conversations on Leadership and Democratic Governance.

Conversations with former judge Albie Sachs On the eve of South Africa’s seventh democratic election, while the rainbow nation and its achievements (or lack thereof) is placed under scrutiny, the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted an intimate afternoon to reflect on the early years of Constitutionalism.

Attendees in the room and online, who joined the third instalment of the school’s Democratic Governance and Leadership series, were in good company, as anti-apartheid stalwart and former Constitutional Court judge Albie Sachs pulled up a chair and discussed the independence of the country’s highest court. The dialogue tied together a thought-provoking series, which included a single common theme: the late former president Nelson Mandela.

Moderated by the School’s Penny Parenzee, Sachs’s last talk of the series was held on Wednesday, 8 May, and was titled “Mandela and our constitutional democracy”. Prior discussions were titled “Mandela the lawbreaker” and specifically touched on the difficult period of the country’s struggle for liberation during the dark days of apartheid; and “Mandela and the making of our Constitution”, which explored the transition from apartheid to democracy. Corruption: the centre of the democratic challenge Ferial Haffajee and Advocate Gary Pienaar participated in the Leadership and Democratic Governance series and shared their thought-provoking views on “Corruption: the centre of the democratic challenge.” Dr Musa Nxele moderated this engaging conversation.Through this series the School aims to hold space for inspirational insights to help us formulate leadership strategies and practical solutions to rebuild resilient, democratic institutions.

  The School hosted a discussion on  State-Civil Society Organisations Relations | re-igniting social movements in the era of authoritarianism and polarisation This discussion formed part of the Leadership series, a Leadership for social change theory aimed at developing a holistic analytical framework that will integrate the different elements that constitute Leadership and influence its ability to drive change. Mark Heywood moderated the discussion between Sibongile Ndashe, Tania Haddad and Brian Raftopoulos.

  The Democratic Developmental State and Industrialisation: building on successes and failures One of the challenges facing Africa today is how to improve the livelihoods of its citizens. Commodity dependence and weak structural transformation are the main reasons for the low levels of development in Africa. In light of this, the Nelson Mandela School hosted a discussion on the challenge of economic transformation in South Africa and the African continent.  In light of this, the Nelson Mandela School hosted a discussion on the challenge of economic transformation in South Africa and the African continent. Dr Alecia Ndlovu moderated an interactive conversation between Fiona Tregenna, Arkebe Oqubay, Adeyemi Dipeolu and Rob Davies.

  Nelson Mandela Leadership Dialogue: Young Leaders Driving Social Change Every day is #MandelaDay at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance. This year's commemoration was particularly special because we co-hosted the 'Nelson Mandela Leadership Dialogue: Young Leaders Driving Social Change' webinar with our partners at the United Nations System Staff College - UNSSC and the American University of Beirut (AUB). Watch and listen to this engaging conversation on how multi-actor and intergenerational approaches can drive transformative changes, particularly in Africa and the Middle East.

  Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 The School’s Master of Development Policy and Practice (MDPP) 2024 cohort joined a team of community activists from Khayelitsha for Mandela Day. The visit to Bulumko Secondary School in Khayelitsha allowed the students to hear what the team was doing through arts and sports. The visit also included an interactive art therapy session and food gardening. Sophumla Ntoyabo (food security enthusiast), Mawethu Mapotolo (artist and poet), and Dumisani Wambi (basketball coach) shared their community work and aspirations with students with the hope of having future collaborations with the School.  

AfCFTA Cotton, Textiles and Apparel Validation Workshop

The School is actively involved in Africa's structural transformation and economic development through its academic and research programmes. It has partnered with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to support the negotiations and implementation of the AfCFTA and to contribute to research in the development of regional value chains across Africa. The impasse in the negotiations on the Rules of Origin, created the need to build a vision for a regional value chain in the fibre to textile and apparel value chain. The AfCFTA Secretariat established the AfCFTA Trade and Industrial Development Advisory Council in 2022, to assist the AfCFTA Secretariat. Faizel Ismail convenes the Council and Noncedo Vutula (a Senior Research Fellow in the School) coordinates the work of the Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is currently conducting consultations with the private sector that represent the different segments of the value chain with the aim to: (a) develop a five-year strategic plan for a continental fibre-to-garment value chain and (b) support the ongoing negotiations in the AfCFTA. 

Three broad topics that are critical for the development of the sector were addressed by three working groups. These are: (i) investment, sustainability, and innovation, (ii) developing manufacturing capabilities and export competitiveness, and (iii) addressing non-tariff barriers and Rules of Origin. The challenges, opportunities, and considerations raised by the private sector in the three separate working groups were collated and used to inform the continental CTA vision document, representing the merging of the working groups into one singular AfCFTA CTA Working Group.

To that end, on 23 July 2024, the AfCFTA Cotton, Textile, and Apparel Validation Workshop was held to present the vision document to the private sector and to encourage the various regions of the continent to endorse the document as something that represents their views and can be used to develop a strategic implementation plan for the continent.

• Dr Marianne Camerer was part of a Workshop on Public Ethics in South Africa: Research and Teaching in the context of the findings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, hosted at Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS). 
• Prof Faizel Ismail has been appointed as a Senior Research Advisor (non-remunerated) at the University of Oxford’s Technology and Management Centre for Development (TMCD) in July 2024. He has also been appointed by the Tony Blair Institute in July 2024 to be part of an Industrial Development Advisory Council (non-remunerated) established for the Africa region.
