The cup is entirely edible, as the name implies. The cup works well for serving hot milk, coffee, or tea. The fact that humans can consume it sets it apart from similar products. Generally, this item refers to packaging for storing and transporting consumable liquids. Specifically, this invention pertains to a consumable cup used for long periods to retain and contain liquids with low viscosity, such as tea, coffee, soda pop, and milk.

Containers made of edible materials are often used to transport and serve solid and very viscous liquid goods. Wafer and sugar cones are often used for serving ice cream, and both may be eaten. To make these culinary containers, either liquid waffle batter is poured into a mold or a flat sheet of dough is shaped into a cone.

A new day always begins with a cup of tea in every part of India, from the countryside to the cities. Whether they are adults or adolescents, almost everyone would benefit from drinking tea more often. Every city street in India has at least one tea vendor, a symbol of the beverage’s popularity and the tea industry’s success there. Statistics show that each Indian consumes around 1 kilogram of tea every month.

Edible Biscuit

In the world’s biggest democratic nation, it’s impossible to know how much tea or coffee is eaten at a tea stand daily. However, let’s consider the medium in which tea is often consumed. One can use a CUP or a plastic container. Customers in the Indian market have acquired a reflex to litter due to the widespread use of plastic. It’s important to recognize the drawbacks of this method:

Using these plastic cups to sip hot beverages is very unhealthy. One such effect is that plastics are not good for the environment since they are not biodegradable. When exposed to hot tea, they produce harmful chemicals at high temperatures. The expense of recycling is substantial. Collecting and recycling every single plastic tea cup in India would be impossible. Our garbage, trash, and litter make the area seem terrible.

“In India, you can easily get tea at any of the many street vendors. The price range of 5 rupees to 7 rupees for a cup of tea is mostly determined by factors like quality and size. The””Tea board of India” conducts studies showing that the average monthly per capita tea consumption in kg rises to .8 Kg. Compared to the amount of tea produced, this is a staggering figure. This product’s innovative spirit is inspired by a high-minded goal of promoting technological progress and ecological sustainability. Just add some fresh thinking to reintroduce the product with new and exciting features. However, this highly depends on the market’s response to the new venture.

Mrs. Jayalaxmi used to be a private school teacher before the pandemic. She belongs to a middle-class family and used to be always busy in her line of work. Suddenly, when the pandemic started, her husband was attacked by the coronavirus and underwent treatment for almost a year. She also lost her job as a result of the pandemic. Suddenly, her family went through a deep financial and emotional crisis.

Loan

There was no income for the family. At this time, Mrs. Jayalaxmi wanted to start a business to pull them out of the bad financial situation. When searching the internet, she came across a unique idea: the edible tea cups business. This sounded very interesting to her as you can eat the tea cup while sipping the tea. She immediately took a loan by pledging gold in the bank to gather capital.

She also learned how to make those tea cups and what machinery to buy. She started her venture and now earns lakhs of rupees as monthly profits. Now let us get into the details of Mrs. Jayalaxmi’s edible tea cup-making business, learn about her experiences, and will also know the investment and profit returns in her business.

Mrs. Jayalaxmi says that before starting this business, she thought it was useful for people and environmentally safe. She says that biscuit tea cups have the potential to replace plastic tea cups. Many tea cups in many tea stalls are going to waste after drinking in them. This will create much plastic waste across the country. Especially as India is a tea-loving country, this business has huge market potential, says Mr. Jayalaxmi.

Also, Mrs. Jayalaxmi wanted the teacups to be biscuits. We know that anyone who loves chai loves a biscuit with it, too, and when we provide the biscuit as a teacup with the chai, it can cut off the plastic and act as a biscuit at the same time. A person buying chai will get both chai and a biscuit at a cost lower than if he bought them separately. Mrs. Jayalaxmi thought this idea was really creative and would also cut off much plastic, so we can save the environment each time we buy tea with this cup.

Also, many children would be very excited to drink tea and milk in these cups as it’s a brand-new concept. Unlike others, Mrs. Jayalaxmi doesn’t use Maida flour. Even considering the health of her customers, she uses ragi and rice flour in her tea cups. This makes her tea cups very healthy and can also be used for serving tea to older people. Considering all these reasons, Mrs. Jayalaxmi started her venture.

Flour

Initially, when starting her business, she didn’t know where to buy the machinery. It took much time for her to buy machinery. Eventually, she bought machinery, which was very weak, and the parts were coming off one by one in no time. She has already invested nearly ten lakhs for everything, including machinery. Also, as there was no market, as most people didn’t know, she was unaware of how to market the product. So she took a month’s gap, retook a loan, and started from scratch.

She went to buy machinery again, but now with a proper understanding of how her machines should be. He could tell the difference between a good and a bad machine. Eventually, she bought the right machinery and started her business. Before starting her business, she even took care of marketing. She learned that there was a certain demand for these tea cups in some of Hyderabad, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. She contacted the dealers and made a deal.

Then she started working continuously; she was able to produce nearly 5000 to 6000 cups per day and was also able to sell them effortlessly. This made her gain so much confidence in no time. Mrs. Jayalaxmi says she uses only ragi (ginger millet) and rice flour for making the teacups. She doesn’t use maida as it is not helpful for anyone’s health. These two flours are properly mixed with honey, sugar, salt, and water. Also, these ingredients should be mixed in proper proportions, which is crucial.

Honey

When these are not mixed in proper proportions, they can get broken easily or sometimes will melt when you pour the tea in. So she says that the proportions are very important in this mixture. These ingredients are then mixed in a mixer. You can leave them for 4 to 5 minutes and add water. Once you get the mixture out of the mixer, be sure to taste it, as it will taste the same as your cups. If you feel like it is less of an ingredient, add the right amount again in the mixer.

All the mixture is taken into a container and ready to get into the biscuit cup-making machine. You have to fill the mixture into the holes of this machine, and when the machine heat-press them till they become solid. For the cup to process, you have to fill the holes again after the first heat press and should heat press it again. This whole process will take 6 minutes. One machine can make nearly 32 cups every 6 minutes. Mrs. Jayalaxmi has four machines and can produce nearly 6000 biscuit cups daily.

Mrs. Jayalaxmi sells 80 ml cups at 3 rupees per each and 60 ml cups at 2 rupees per each. She sells nearly 3000 cups daily, meaning her daily income is nearly 9,000 rupees. This makes her yearly income nearly 32 lakhs. Even if you take off five lakhs as a running investment, she gets a profit of 27 lakh rupees per year. This analysis is the minimum amount you can get from this business. However, if your product is excellent and very good at marketing, you can get almost double the above profits.

Profit Analysis

If we consider a one-time investment, it took her nearly 15 lakh rupees as a one-time investment, says Mr. Jayalaxmi. She recovered this within one year of her business success. Mrs. Jayalaxmi says that she is very happy that she started this venture, and now she is financially sound and is thinking of expanding her business to another commercial level.

Jayalakshmi's edible tea cups make her a successful entrepreneur from Visakhapatnam

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Food Processing Society (APFPS) has enabled several small entrepreneurs script success stories with its initiatives. One such story is that of T Jayalakshmi from Visakhapatnam. After she and her husband lost their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, not losing hope, she started an edible tea cup manufacturing unit – Sree Harsha Enterprises – with the help of APFPS.

Instead of maida (white flour or all purpose flour), she used ragi (finger millet flour) and rice flour as raw ingredients. Within a short span of time, she tripled the production capacity of her unit with the steady rise in demand. From 2,000 cups a day, production increased to 6,000 cups.

Jayalakshmi, who holds two master’s degrees, one in Telugu from Andhra University and the other in English from Gitam, aspired to become a government teacher, but for some reason she settled in being a private school teacher.

For this native of Dusi in Srikakulam district and settled in Visakhapatnam, when everything was going smooth for her and her family, the Covid pandemic struck. “It was really, a difficult situation at that time. My husband Srinivas Rao, who was working as an accounts officer in a private firm, had to undergo surgery and later he was infected with Coronavirus. To look after him, I had to give up my teaching job,” she recalled.

To support the family, she decided to do business and started exploring business ideas. Initially, she thought of taking tea time franchise and while researching for details, she came across biscuit tea cups (edible tea cups) which are available in Puducherry.

“We purchased them and found some quality issues. Those cups are made of maida. I felt it would not be liked by health conscious people. I thought of manufacturing them on my own and substitute ragi and rice flour as ingredients. I sold my gold ornaments to start the business and had to suffer a loss of nearly Rs 70,000 to get the right formula. People like to hold their cup and at least it should be able hold tea for 20 minutes. We finally achieved it,” she said.

As it was Covid, marketing and sales was tricky, so Jayalakshmi adopted online marketing and YouTube campaigning. With her product being of high quality and edible, within a short time, it has become quite popular. “We had to keep up with demand. I approached several banks in vain and finally it was Canara Bank manager Murali who came to my aid and provided loan. APFPS officials helped in getting the loan and their support is inexplicable. Thanks to them, my firm named after my children – Sree Harsha Enterprises – became a success,” she said.

The APFPS facilitated a loan of Rs 6 lakh with 35% subsidy for installation of two biscuit moulds under the PMFME (Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises) Scheme. What was a humble start of making an annual turnover of Rs 3.75 lakh, has now doubled in just one year and she is confidently doing a business of Rs 7.50 lakh per annum and planning to increase the capacity as she is not able to keep up with the demand for edible tea cups.

Dainty teacups that you can actually eat make a wonderful addition to children’s birthday parties or afternoon teas. To use ice cream cones as the base for the teacups, cut them and attach the tops to shortbread cookies. Then use icing to fix pretzel handles in place. For teacups that mimic the actual shape of a teacup, roll gum paste to fit a real teacup and saucer. Then leave them to harden. You can even use melted chocolate to create perfectly rounded teacups that are great for your event.

Ingredients

Teacups with cones and cookies.

  • 12 wafer ice cream cones
  • 1 tube of ready-to-use icing
  • 12 round shortbread cookies
  • 6 round miniature chocolate-covered pretzels

Makes 12 teacups

Teacup and Saucer with Gum Paste

  • 1 cup (226 g) of prepared gum paste
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • 1 ounce (30 g) of white chocolate, melted , optional

Makes 1 teacup and saucer

Chocolate Teacups

  • 14 ounces (420 g) of white chocolate, tempered

Makes 4 teacups and saucers

Making Teacups with Cones and Cookies

Step 1 Cut the base from each wafer cone.

  • You should be left with 12 rounded cups that have holes in the bottom.
  • Use a gentle sawing motion as you cut so you don't break the cones.
  • If you don't want to work with ready-to-use icing in a tube, make your own and pipe it onto the cones.
  • You can also dip the cones into chocolate, but be careful, as this method is imprecise.

Variation: To use sandwich cookies, such as golden Oreos, pull apart 6 sandwich cookies and remove the cream filling. Then use the cookie portions for your teacups.

  • Use plain, round pretzels if you don't want the chocolate-covered kind.
  • Once the icing has set, you can store the teacups at room temperature until you're ready to serve them.

Crafting a Teacup and Saucer with Gum Paste

  • If you don't have a fondant rolling pin, use a standard rolling pin and dust it with powdered sugar to prevent the gum paste from sticking to it.

Did You Know? Although you can use fondant instead of gum paste, the gum paste is stabilized with egg whites, shortening, and powdered sugar which will make it easier to roll thin. Gum paste will also show detail better than fondant.

  • If you want to include details on the edges of your saucer, press in the edges to create a slight scallop.
  • Your handle can be as simplistic or intricate as you like.
  • Set this circular base aside while you make the teacup.
  • Purchase edible glue from craft supply stores or online.
  • You may need to trim or make adjustments to the shape of the gum paste so it covers the inside of the teacup. Keep in mind that there will be a small hole at the bottom of the cup.
  • To ensure the rainbow is the right size before cutting the gum paste, cut out a paper template and nestle it into the teacup first.
  • If there's not enough gum paste to close the bottom of the teacup, cut a small circle of gum paste and push it into place.
  • Since you won't be gluing anything to the saucer, simply remove it from the actual saucer once the gum paste hardens.

Tip: For an extra-strong hold, melt about 1 ounce (30 g) of white chocolate and paint it around the teacup's handle and base. Then let the chocolate harden.

Creating Chocolate Teacups

  • For larger teacups, use a mold with 6 semi-sphere cavities. For standard-sized teacups, choose a mold with 12 to 15 dome cavities.

Variation: To make dark teacups, use milk or semisweet chocolate.

  • If you used a mold with smaller domes, the chocolate will harden faster.
  • Set the cups aside while you make the chocolate saucers and handles.
  • Each saucer should be about 1 ⁄ 4 inch (0.64 cm) thick.
  • If you don't have parchment paper, use waxed paper instead.
  • Work quickly so your hands don't melt the chocolate. If the chocolate teacup pieces begin to soften, put them into the refrigerator for a few minutes.

About This Article

Craig Watson

To make an edible teacup, start by using a serrated knife to cut off the base of an ice cream cone. Keep the rounded top part of the cone and discard the longer base piece. Next, pipe a circle of frosting along the base of the rounded top part of the cone. Then, push the cone onto 1 round shortbread cookie to form the base of the teacup, using the frosting as "adhesive." Finally, cut off the rounded side of a chocolate-covered pretzel and attach it to the side of the cone with frosting to create the handle. For tips on decorating your edible teacup, scroll down! What’s Up, Hungry People

Come with me into a world of imagination as I attempt to recreate the iconic edible tea cups from the 1971 movie classic: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . Inspired by the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, the movie follows Charlie Bucket, a poor boy who wins a chance to meet the eccentric Willy Wonka for a scrumdiddlyumptious tour of the chocolate factory Wonka has created.

Honestly if you haven’t seen this movie yet or haven’t watched in a while, do yourself a favor and watch it the next time you have the chance! It surprisingly holds up – and the parts that don’t are made up for with hilarious internet memes .

One of the most unforgettable scenes in the movie is when the group of lucky golden ticket finders enters Wonka’s chocolate room for the first time, encountering an enchanting forest filled with candy from floor to ceiling.

That scene has been etched into my memory for as long as I can remember – as a kid, I too dreamed of an opportunity to enter the whimsical world of Willy Wonka.

One such treat that has eluded the internet for ages is Willy Wonka’s edible tea cup. In the 1970s movie, the tea cup was likely made from wax, and Gene Wilder probably did a quick spit take immediately after taking a bite.

Well, I’ve been thinking about this tea cup for decades now – and after multiple requests to make it popped up over on TikTok , I knew it was high time to make the famous flower for myself.

In fact, making this tea cup flower in real life is actually quite easy. All you need are some water balloons and yellow candy melts!

What Are Candy Melts?

Candy melts or chocolate wafers, also known as confectionery coating, are a type of confectionery product commonly used for melting, dipping, and decorating various sweet treats. They are similar in taste to white chocolate but come in a variety of vibrant colors that can be used in many different applications.

Candy melts have a smooth texture and are designed to melt easily and harden quickly, making them ideal for coating cookies, cake pops, pretzels, and other desserts. They have a similar consistency to chocolate but do not require tempering, which is the process of heating and cooling chocolate to stabilize its crystalline structure.

Though I still temper my candy melts out of habit, that step is completely optional.

Creating the Petal Cups

To start, we’ll craft the edible tea cup itself. Begin by melting the yellow candy melts in the microwave until smooth. If you prefer, you can also use a double boiler method for melting. Stir until the candy melts are velvety and free of lumps.

To achieve a glossy texture, you can perform a quick tempering process by stirring in some room temperature candy melts. This helps stabilize the structure and creates a smoother finish. Allow the melted chocolate to cool for a few minutes, ensuring it is still pliable.

Next, inflate a water balloon about halfway, making sure not to overinflate it as it may pop when dipped into the melted chocolate. Gently squeeze and shape the balloon into a cylindrical form before dipping it into the chocolate. By rocking the balloon from side to side, you can create beautiful “petals” along the sides. Transfer the coated balloons onto a chilled baking sheet, which will aid in quick setting, and place the sheet in the fridge for a few minutes.

Crafting the Flower Base

While the petal cups are setting, let’s work on the flower base. Line a tea plate with parchment paper. Using a spoon, dab melted chocolate onto the four corners of the parchment, creating petals. Then, gently drag the spoon towards the center to form a plate for the petal cups to rest on. Place the plates in the fridge to set.

Adding the Finishing Touches

In the meantime, let’s create handles for the tea cups. Shape melted chocolate into the desired form for the handles and set them in the fridge to harden.

Once the petal cups, flower bases, and handles are ready, it’s time to assemble everything. Carefully remove the water balloons by popping them with scissors, ensuring no balloon remnants remain inside the cups. If the bottom of a cup is missing, dip it into more melted candy to fill the hole. For added stability, adhere the cups to the flower bases. Attach a handle to each cup, and voila! Your fully assembled, fully edible teacups are ready to serve.

Helpful Tips for Making Will Wonka’s Candy Tea Cups

  • Melting Candy Melts : When melting candy melts, it’s important to do so gradually and at a low heat. Use short bursts of microwave heat or a double boiler to prevent overheating and ensure a smooth consistency.
  • Adding Gloss and Texture : To enhance the glossiness and texture of the melted candy melts, perform a quick tempering process. This involves mixing in some room temperature candy melts to the melted chocolate, which helps stabilize the structure and create a smoother finish.
  • Chilling for Stability : Placing the dipped balloons on a chilled baking sheet helps the melted candy set quickly and provides a stable base for the petal cups. A cold baking sheet or parchment paper can be used to ensure the cups maintain their shape.
  • Creating the Flower Base : When forming the flower base, make sure the chocolate petals extend beyond the cup’s diameter to provide ample support. You can swirl the spoon in the center to create a well for the cup to rest on.
  • Handle Preparation : Mold the handles from the remaining melted candy melts and set them in the fridge to harden. It’s a good idea to make extra handles as they can be delicate and prone to breaking.
  • Removing the Balloon : When popping the balloons, do so carefully with scissors. Check for any balloon remnants stuck inside the cup and remove them to ensure a clean and edible teacup.
  • Filling in the Bottom : If a cup has a hole at the bottom, you can dip it into additional melted candy melts to fill in the gap. This will ensure your cup is fully enclosed and ready for serving.
  • Serving and Liquids : These edible teacups are best suited for serving very cold liquids, such as iced tea, to prevent melting. Avoid using hot liquids as they may cause the cups to soften and lose their shape.
  • Storage and Shelf Life : Edible teacups made with candy melts are best consumed within a few days after assembly. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness.
  • Experiment and Have Fun : Feel free to experiment with different colors, flavors, and decorations when creating your edible teacups. Let your creativity soar and have fun with this whimsical culinary project!

Serving and Enjoying

To truly appreciate these whimsical creations, serve them with chilled beverages such as iced sweet tea. Indulge in a quick sip from your edible tea cup, savoring the magical experience it offers.

Remember, these cups are fully edible, from the cup to the plate, but be cautious and only serve cold liquids in them to prevent melting.

These tea cups have been on my list of foods to make since I was a literal kid, so bringing it to life felt like I won the golden ticket, and got to step into Willy Wonka’s factory and bring these teacups home as a souvenir.

What fictional feasts should I recreate next? Let me know in the comments! Or head on over to TikTok to leave your suggestions !

Edible Tea Cups from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory

  • double boiler optional
  • water balloons
  • parchment paper cut into 5×5 inch squares
  • baking sheets
  • silicone mats
  • mixing bowls
  • fridge space
  • freezer space

Ingredients    1x 2x 3x

  • 24-32 oz yellow candy melts or white chocolate yellow candy melts
  • ice cold tea for serving

Instructions

  • Begin by placing a large baking sheet in the freezer for at least 30 minutes to expedite the setting process.
  • In a large microwave-safe bowl, pour half of the candy melt wafers. Microwave the wafers in 30-second intervals until they start to melt. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler to melt the wafers.
  • Stir the melted wafers until smooth, then add the remaining unmelted candy wafers. Allow the new wafers to sit for a few minutes to melt into the hot ones, helping to temper the candy melts for a better texture.
  • Inflate a water balloon about halfway with air, ensuring not to overinflate as it may cause the balloons to pop when dipped in the melted candy.
  • Remove the baking sheet from the freezer and place it next to your work station.
  • Dip the balloon into the melted chocolate, ensuring an even coating on the bottom.
  • While keeping the bottom of the balloon in the melted candy, tip the balloon about 45 degrees in different directions (left, right, up, and down) to create petal shapes up the sides of the balloon.
  • Quickly transfer the dipped balloons one by one onto the chilled baking sheet. Hold the balloons upright for a few seconds to set the base, then carefully transfer the entire baking sheet to the refrigerator to finish setting the cups.
  • While the cups are setting, create the flower base by lining a tea plate with a 5×5 piece of parchment. Use a spoon to dab melted chocolate onto the four corners of the parchment, then drag the chocolate into the center to create petals. Swirl the spoon in the center to form a plate for the petal cups to rest on. Transfer to the refrigerator to chill.
  • Transfer the remaining melted candy to a plastic baggie and snip off one corner. Use this baggie to pipe handle shapes onto a long piece of parchment paper placed on a baking sheet. Transfer to the refrigerator to chill.
  • Once the cups are fully set, carefully pop the balloons and gently remove them from the insides. If the bottom of a cup is missing due to the balloon sinking while setting, dip the end of the cup in some melted chocolate to seal it up.
  • Place the cups onto the prepared plate and use a small amount of melted chocolate to secure them in place. Chill until ready to serve.
  • While the cups are fully edible from cup to plate and can be filled with liquid, ensure they are kept chilled until ready to serve. Serve only very cold liquids or desserts within the cups, as anything warmer than room temperature may cause the candy to melt.
  • Serve these delightful edible tea cups with your favorite floral tea and enjoy the whimsy as if you were touring the rest of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory!

Company Overview

Who is delta snacks.

Delta Snacks is led by Eric Pettis, who has been in the edibles business for five years. Before starting Delta Snacks, he worked at several edibles and cannabis shops, spending most of that time in management positions. As such, Eric has an in-depth knowledge of the edibles/cannabis business, including the operations (e.g., running day-to-day operations) and management (e.g., staffing, marketing, etc.) sides of the industry. He also has in-depth knowledge of edibles recipes and what ingredients are needed to make the best quality edibles and cannabis products.

Delta Snacks’ History

Delta Snacks is run by Eric Pettis, who has been in the edibles business for five years. He previously managed a cannabis shop but noticed that the shop was located in an undesirable location. He also believed that the shop did not sell a wide enough variety of edible products, which were extremely popular. He decided to start his own edibles store that would be in a more convenient location and offer a greater variety of options.

He has spent the past year researching recipes and testing his products. After creating a perfect initial line of edible products, Eric incorporated Delta Snacks on January 1st, 2023 as an S Corporation. He has been primarily running the business online from his home but has found a potential retail location to start selling products in-store. Once the lease is approved, all operations will run from there.

Since incorporation, the company has achieved the following milestones:

  • Found a retail location and signed a letter of intent to lease it
  • Developed the company’s name, logo, and website
  • Created the initial product list
  • Created the online store and began selling products
  • Began developing a social media presence
  • Began recruiting key employees

Delta Snacks’ Services

Industry analysis.

There has never been a better time to open an edibles business. With increasing public popularity and more lax state and local laws, sales of edibles and other cannabis products are increasing exponentially. We expect these trends to continue as laws become laxer and the general public becomes more interested in these products. As more people educate themselves about the benefits of these products, a larger customer base will be interested in buying them.

According to several research sources, the edibles market is expected to grow substantially at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.4% annually over the next 10 years. Very few other industries are experiencing this kind of growth, which shows just how much demand there is for edibles.

Customer Analysis

Demographic profile of target market.

Delta Snacks will serve the community residents of Portland, Oregon and its surrounding areas.

Portland is a progressive community that overwhelmingly voted for the legalization of cannabis. The community is always eager to buy edibles and other cannabis products, especially from local businesses. The community primarily consists of middle-class workers who are in need of products that can help them relax or cope with pain after a long day of work. The city also has a large population of young adults and middle aged residents who are more open to using cannabis products than other generations.

A demographic profile of Portland is as follows:

Customer Segmentation

Delta Snacks will primarily target the following customer profiles:

  • Millennials
  • Medicinal users

Competitive Analysis

Direct and indirect competitors.

Delta Snacks will face competition from other companies with similar business profiles. A description of each competitor company is below.

Established in 2019, Hemp House has quickly become a popular location for cannabis products in Portland, Oregon. They offer a variety of products to their customers, including vape pens, edibles, oils, and more.

While we expect Hemp House to continue to thrive, its location is inconvenient to much of the city. To visit the shop, most customers must drive downtown and pay for parking. Delta Snacks’ location will be far more convenient for customers who live on the outer edges and suburbs of Portland, Oregon. Furthermore, their selection of edibles is small and will not be able to compete with our inventory.

Local Leaf Snacks

Local Leaf Snacks opened in 2021 as the city’s center for edible cannabis products. Whether it be chocolates, gummies, brownies, or anything else, Local Leaf Snacks has you covered.

While they are popular for their edibles, all of their products are sourced from other companies. Local Leaf Snacks does not make its own edibles. Delta Snacks will have the advantage of selling locally-made edible products.

City Cannabis

City Cannabis is a popular location for cannabis products. The shop is large and sells a wide variety of vapes, edibles, topicals, and more. City Cannabis has been the most popular spot in Portland, Oregon for cannabis as it was the first major business to open up after cannabis became legal in the state. Therefore, it has become a small tourist spot, which has boosted its traffic and customer base.

However, while City Cannabis’ selection is impressive, their edibles inventory is still smaller than ours and not locally sourced. Individuals looking for local edible products will be more interested in frequenting Delta Snacks.

Competitive Advantage

Delta Snacks will be able to offer the following advantages over their competition:

Marketing Plan

Brand & value proposition.

Delta Snacks will offer the unique value proposition to its clientele:

  • Convenient location
  • Excellent customer service
  • Wide variety of edible products
  • Online ordering service

The company will use recommendations and word-of-mouth marketing to grow the customer base through the network of its existing customers. The company will be incentivizing its existing customer base to encourage their friends to come by and check out our selection.

Website/SEO

Delta Snacks will invest heavily in developing a professional website that displays all of the features and benefits of its products. It will also invest heavily in SEO so that the brand’s website will appear at the top of search engine results.

Delta Snacks will create a winning customer loyalty program to keep its best customers coming back again and again. The program will include discounts, deals, and promotions that non-loyalty customers will not have access to.

Delta Snacks pricing will be moderate, so customers feel they receive great value when visiting our shop. Pricing will be similar to or lower than the nearby competition.

International Tea Day: This Delhi Startup Sells Sustainable, Nutritious & Edible Cups

edible tea cups business plan

The United Nations has deemed May 21 as International Tea Day . The day aims to raise awareness of the long history and the deep cultural and economic significance of tea around the world. The goal is to promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.

In India itself, close to 88% of the total households have reported consumption of tea. Within the potential tea drinkers within a household, the penetration of tea is about 96% and around 64% of the total population in India is the tea drinking population. With such a significant tea culture, many may wonder about the specifics of their favorite tea beverages, like  how much sugar is in a chai latte , a beloved choice among Indian tea enthusiasts.

This explains why we call tea or chai an emotion. It is a quintessential part of our daily lives refreshing with every sip.

Up until now most tea is served in ceramic, glass, or metal cups in households and in non biodegradable disposable cups at tea stalls across the country. There is of course Kulhad which is biodegradable. But the amount of tea cups going into landfills is huge which poses a threat to the environment.

To address this, a startup from Delhi came up with completely edible cutlery which include tea cups, plates, spoons, etc which can be consumed after savoring the food.

Attaware Edible Tea Cups International Tea Day

Attaware , a serveware company founded by Puneet Datta is revolutionizing the entire tea industry with its eatable cups that replace the biscuits, or cookies often served as side dish or snack with the beverage.

“Along with our cup of chai or coffee we are habituated to eating something – whether biscuits, rusks or mathri (a savoury made in North India). The edible cup, therefore, helps in satiating our need to eat while sipping the tea,” said Puneet Datta to Life Beyond Numbers.

What led Puneet to come up with Attaware?

Attaware Edible Tea Cups International Tea Day Puneet Datta

“During one of my travels from Delhi to Vrindavan, I saw something floating on the Yamuna River. I halted the vehicle to check and I found large amounts of thermocol in the water. This left me terribly disheartened,” shared Puneet Dutta.

Then again he saw few people lining up for food in the same trip on reaching Vrindavan. They were all served in the same thermocol plates.

“Most of them were handed a thermocol plate, one man did not get a plate and so he merely used one of the puris as a plate. I watched as he asked the person serving to add one scoop of chole (chickpeas) to the puri. That was an innovative way of using a puri,” Puneet remarked.

This small act became the very foundation of Attaware. He thought that if the man could use Puri as a plate then why not create a whole line of edible cutlery that can be consumed like the humble Indian fried bread. And after six years of research he founded Attaware Biodegradable Private Limited which was finally registered on August 15, 2019.

Soon they started out retailing various edible products like plates, spoons and cups.

Making sustainable, nutritious, and edible tea cups

In the beginning, Attaware underwent extensive research and developed an edible cup with a mixture of ingredients like wheat, bajra, jowar, corn and many more grains along with jaggery. Using grains and jaggery and not wheat alone to make the edible products, which increases the shelf-life from 6 months to 12 months.

“The question we raise is that how sustainable and nutritious is your Chai? You may say that nutrition and tea do not go together, for that you will take green tea, masala tea, or something else. This is where Attaware comes in. Our cups act as a great replacement to unhealthy snacks and are also packed with good amounts of potassium, calcium, proteins and minerals. When one sips tea from Attaware cup the ingredients are diluted without destroying its taste, fragrance, and color. And if you eat the cup the value will sky rocket,” informed the founder.

Moreover, Attaware does not have any colors, preservatives, added chemicals, edible oil, wastage of single drop of water, and there is no carbon footprint. The cups come in many flavors which include ginger, caramel, saunf (fennel seeds), elaichi (cardamom), orange, tulsi, strawberry, vanilla and coffee making it easy on the vendor who is catering to different tastes and requests from customers. With this they sell lakhs of tea cups every week.

Attaware Edible Tea Cups International Tea Day

A 2021 study by the company shows that they have mitigated 90-tonne plastic cutlery from reaching landfills, saved over 35,00,000 litres of water and generated 6,000 days of employment for over 50 employees during the pandemic. Yet the virus did hit the business.

“Some of the products that we were retailing became supremely popular while some just lost their way. With no big gatherings and parties taking place, the demand for plates and serveware reduced drastically. A lot of our bulk orders got cancelled and that was when we decided to stick to making edible cups,” shared Puneet.

“There are 140 crore people living in India. Everyone takes one cup of tea on an average per day. Attaware plans to get 1 percent of the market which will amount to 1.4 crore cups per day. This will be giving a lot of nutrition value to the people who drink tea from our cups. Every cup we sell has a social, health, environmental, and economic value attached to it. This is how we will be impacting the tea lovers of India. This is the roadmap going forward,” envisions Datta.

These edible cups can be bought via Attaware’s social media sites for Rs 10-12/piece.  If one is keen on buying it wholesale, the price is even less based on their state of residence. Click here for placing your order.

Tea is a very common beverage that is consumed around the world. Consumption of tea has huge health benefits as it contains a wide spectrum of phytochemicals. Tea is consumed in various forms like black tea, green tea, jasmine tea, etc. India is considered a major producer and exporter of tea in the world. It has been reported in the literature that on average within every two kilometers in India you will find a tea stall. The tea in such stalls is mainly served in plastic cups, paper cups, and earthen cups. Moreover, a gigantic volume of spent tea leaves is generated as a result of the preparation of tea. In context to that, it may be corroborated that, a huge chunk of solid waste is being generated from such small tea shops which in turn has no practical applications. Such wastes also face serious issues related to their storage, management, and disposal. Accordingly, to put an insight into the volume of such tea waste generated; a small case study was conducted as a part of this ...

Twiice: the family business making edible coffee cups.

avatar

  • Share Story

The Lightbulb asks innovators and entrepreneurs how they turned their ideas into reality. This week we talk to Jamie Cashmore, co-founder of Auckland-based edible packaging company Twiice .

First of all, give us your elevator pitch for Twiice.

Twiice is a company making edible coffee cups with plans to progress into other areas of edible packaging. New Zealanders throw away something in the vicinity of 290 million coffee cups a year, so that’s quite a few coffee cups going into landfill. There are a bunch of solutions out there for this problem, but nothing that’s quite as zero waste as the Twiice cup, which you can either eat or throw away without feeling bad, because it’ll decompose in any environment.

What were you doing prior to starting Twiice? What sort of background do you come from?

I come from a pro-audio background. I studied audio engineering and then I went and built a couple of recording studios. For the last four or five years, I’ve been working in commercial audio.

My co-founder (Stephen Cashmore), who’s also my father, is an ex-architect, so he’s got the engineering background. He’s involved in the process and the manufacturing side of the business and I’m on the sales and marketing side.

Both our wives are semi-involved as well. My wife (Simone Cashmore) is in graphic design and branding, so she’s done all the branding for Twiice, while my father’s wife (Theresa Cashmore) does a lot of stuff with him on the production side of the business.

edible tea cups business plan

So what was it that sparked the idea for Twiice? What was your lightbulb moment?

Back in 2015, we were down at Okahu Bay just having a swim. We’re all quite a creative family and my wife said ‘what if we had an edible coffee cup? Then you wouldn’t have to throw it away. You could just eat it and it would be gone’. Everyone kind of forgot about it at first but the idea stuck in my head. I brought it back up after a couple of weeks and suggested we give making it a go using what we had in the kitchen. But yeah, it all kind of started as a throwaway comment.

You launched Twiice just a few weeks ago, but you first started working on the idea four years ago. What happened in those years to make that idea into a reality?

We started playing with what we had in the kitchen, just playing with recipes and stuff. But it quickly became apparent that we’d need some sort of custom-made machine because the way we’re making these cups isn’t being done anywhere else in the world. There’s no machine that we can buy and just start making them. So we started on that process and kept refining it. Along each step, we made changes to the machine as needed, but it’s definitely been a journey. I don’t know what number machine we’re on now, but there’s been a lot of trial and error.

What ingredients do you use for your edible cup? Was there a lot of trial and error involved to get that right as well?

Our ingredients are all listed on our website under each product . But basically, it’s just your normal everyday ingredients you’d find in your pantry (ie: wheat flour, sugar, egg). The process and how we treat those ingredients is how we’re able to do what we do.

edible tea cups business plan

But you’re right, there was a lot of R&D, a lot of trial and error in terms of specific ingredients. We found that sometimes you’d get one ingredient but then use the same ingredient from a different brand which would react slightly differently with all the other ingredients, so we really had to nail down what we wanted to use and even the brands that we wanted to rely on. For example, all the vanilla that we use in the cookie is all-natural vanilla from Tonga. So everything in the cup has no added preservatives, flavours or colours. It’s 100% natural.

So what does the cup taste like?

It tastes really nice! It kind of tastes like vanilla biscotti or vanilla wine biscuits or even fortune cookies (for palates) in the Asian market.

Say you have a hot cup of coffee in your Twiice cup. How long can you keep that coffee in the cup and still have the cup remain intact?

Our official line is that it’ll stay crispy until after you finish your coffee. The cup won’t break with the coffee. We always test our cups with boiling water, [so it won’t] spill the coffee all over your desk or anything. Basically, you can have water in there for 24 hours and it won’t break or split. It might be a bit flexible and you might be able to push the sides in a bit, but the cup won’t actually break. So it lasts for quite a long time.

edible tea cups business plan

What cafes/restaurants currently stock your cups?

We’ve got five in Auckland (Fantail & Turtle, Sherry Kitchen, Freaky, Yeahbowl, Bow and Tie), two in Tauranga (Henry & Ted, Elizabeth Cafe & Larder), and [ five more in the North Island]. We’ve also got one in Wanaka and one in Dunedin, so we’ve already got quite a few cafes on board. I’m literally talking to new cafes every day.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

Probably trying to figure out the packaging [to ship the cups]. If a cafe orders 100 cups, you have to make sure those cups will leave us here in Auckland and arrive in, say, Christchurch without being broken.

We tried working with a couple of packaging companies but we actually ended up designing the packaging ourselves. It wasn’t that they weren’t on board with what we were doing but I think they were a bit cautious because they didn’t want to be responsible… for not knowing if their packaging was going to work or not. Because when you order packaging you’ve got to order it in bulk [and if it’s not right] you’re stuck with a lot of packaging you can’t use.

So we designed the packaging and worked with a company in Wellington to have them all made up, sampled and trialled. That was probably our most frustrating challenge because our product was ready but we couldn’t move it. It took about six months for that process to be complete.

What can we expect from Twiice in the next year?

In the next year, we’ll have gluten-free and vegan options available. We’re also working with a couple of companies, ice cream and gelato shops, that want edible packaging. There’s been quite a bit of interest in more of a bowl-type packaging suitable for ice cream so we’ll probably go down that road as well, hopefully by this summer.

Thanks to Edibles, it’s the end of plastic and paper drinking cups

Start-ups - Every day, Innovation Origins spotlights a startup. Today it is Edibles, which aims to put an end to disposable plastic cups with their edible cups.

About edibles.

  • Founders: Maximilian Schupp (21), Andres Savid (26) en Ruymand Soltani (25)
  • Founded in: oktober 2021
  • Employees: 3
  • Money raised: -
  • Ultimate goal: Bringing edible cups into the aviation industry.

Until recently, millions of disposable cups were still being used in the Netherlands, until a ban on these plastic cups came into effect in July 2021. Three ambitious students have found an alternative to this: edible cups. Founder Maximilian Schupp (21) talks more about Edibles in this episode of Startup of the day .

edible tea cups business plan

What is the idea behind Edibles?

Schupp: “The idea is quite simple: we want to reduce the waste of single-use tableware. So the cups is what we started with. I’m not from the Netherlands, but I noticed that the Dutch drink coffee, tea, chocolate milk and the like all day long. So our product always works. We saw that relatively speaking, a lot of paper and plastic cups were used – and thrown away. This created a lot of waste in bins which, in our view, was unnecessary. We think the only way to reduce paper and plastic waste is to take it out of the product.” This is how Swiss Maximilian Schupp (21) and his fellow students Andres Savid (26) and Ruymand Soltani (25) came up with the idea of putting edible cups into practice. “We want to give people the opportunity to choose a sustainable alternative,” Schupp says. After a hefty dose of research, Schupp and co managed to find a supplier to produce the cups. Currently, production still takes place abroad, but the aim is to bring it to the Netherlands.

What does the production process look like?

Schupp: “Currently, we are working with a Bulgarian manufacturer who knows all the ins and outs of the product. We combine that with our knowledge based on the market research we did beforehand. That’s pretty much what our cooperation looks like.” Schupp openly expresses his ambition to bring production to the Netherlands, but also explains why this is not possible at the moment: “We can’t just set up a factory from scratch, because that requires a substantial investment.” For now, Schupp is still importing the cups, also to see how the market reacts to the product. For now, reactions are positive, as Schupp already has collaborations with the HAN, the Radboud UMC and the Industriepark Kleefse Waard. “But don’t forget that we are students who also have to eat, so we can’t spend too much money right away,” Schupp says with a wink.

Footprint

You said earlier that you want people to be able to choose a sustainable alternative. Suppose people want to choose sustainable, but don’t want to eat the cup. What is the breakdown process like?

Schupp: “It takes about three days to a week for the product to break down naturally. It is actually similar to a biscuit and the advantage is that if you burn such a cup, for example, it leaves no damage to the environment. But it doesn’t have to get to that point in the first place.” When developing the idea, Schupp already took good account of the fact that not everyone will want to eat their cup, but that’s no problem at all if you don’t want to. “You can simply throw it away guilt-free without it taking years to be broken down by nature,” Schupp explains. So are you no longer craving your coffee? Then you can throw away your cup without feeling guilty!

What problems have you encountered?

Schupp: “In terms of production, we didn’t necessarily run into any problems, because our manufacturer made sure it didn’t have to come to that. In fact, our manufacturer is responsible for the whole production process, we do everything around that. We are responsible for sales, marketing and things like that. In that area, we did run into some problems. The first problem was that sustainable products are often more expensive than plastic and paper. From there, it was important to start looking for a group of people who might be interested in your product. I think we did a pretty good job of that. I also think it’s a pretty typical problem that sustainability runs parallel to higher prices.” Every business naturally wants to keep its costs down and turnover as high as possible, but in the field of sustainability, that is still quite a challenge. That also motivates Schupp enormously.

How long did it take to set up this business.

Schupp: “In October a year ago, I met my fellow students who share the same vision. So one thing led to another and we came up with the idea of setting up Edibles. Our research also showed that our manufacturer was doing the same for similar ventures abroad, but not yet for the Netherlands. We saw our chance and seized this opportunity with both hands to make this possible in the Netherlands too.”

Starting a business is a learning process and also quite a challenge. This made Schupp and his fellow students think twice about whether this could really work. “There are definitely times when we asked ourselves if this could work, but that just motivates me more to give my full 100 per cent. You have to keep working hard and be better than your competition. Afterwards, there were definitely some difficult moments because I am also a full-time student. Then when you don’t see any income or profit, it can make you doubt. But what I say, if you keep working hard it will work out in the end.”

What sets Edibles apart from the competition?

Schupp: “Currently, there are only a handful of suppliers in this chain worldwide if I am not mistaken. Every organisation committed to the problem is pursuing the same goal. It is true that we are competitors to some extent, but we are all doing the same thing in different parts of the world. That way, we make the world a cleaner and better place. In the end, we are all trying to solve the same problem, which is why it would not be smart to call our company better than another.”

“Competition motivates me, but in the end we are all trying to solve the same problem.” Maximilian Schupp (21) – CEO

“Take for example a disposable cup with chocolate icing. You can use those in different ways. Some people like chocolate-flavoured coffee, others don’t. People want to have a choice and we, as a joint provider of edible cups, offer them that choice,” Schupp explains.

  • How to Start a Profitable Edibles Business [11 Steps]

How to Write a Edibles Business Plan in 7 Steps:

1. describe the purpose of your edibles business..

The first step to writing your business plan is to describe the purpose of your edibles business. This includes describing why you are starting this type of business, and what problems it will solve for customers. This is a quick way to get your mind thinking about the customers’ problems. It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

It also helps to include a vision statement so that readers can understand what type of company you want to build.

Here is an example of a purpose mission statement for a edibles business:

Our purpose at (Name of Edibles Business) is to provide quality, affordable and nutritious meals that provide convenience and satisfaction for customers without compromising on flavours and ingredients. 2. Products & Services Offered by Your Edibles Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your edibles business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your edibles business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your edibles business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your edibles business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a edibles business?

  • Commercial kitchen or manufacturing space
  • Food-Safe and/or Organic Certification
  • State or local food license or permit
  • Food handler’s training certificate
  • Labeling and packaging supplies
  • Ingredients and flavorings
  • Various kitchen appliances and utensils
  • Refrigerator, food processor, oven, etc.
  • Industrial-sized mixer
  • Weigh scales and thermometers

5. Management & Organization of Your Edibles Business.

The second part of your edibles business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your edibles business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Edibles Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a edibles business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a edibles business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your edibles business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your edibles business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your edibles business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.
