TNAU to offer integrated Ph.D. programmes in four disciplines

External ph.d. in 26 disciplines offered for professionals.

Emulating the spirit of research at the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University seeks to give an impetus to post-graduate and doctoral studies. In what is said to be a first for any State agricultural university, TNAU says its will offer an Integrated Ph.D. programme in four disciplines – agronomy, plant breeding and genetics, agricultural entomology and agricultural microbiology. An external Ph.D. programme in 26 disciplines will also be offered to only professionals.

According to Dean of the School of Post-Graduate Studies, C. Udayasoorian, the four-year Integrated Ph.D. integrates a three-year Ph.D. programme with a year of post-graduate coursework in generic research training and discipline-specific research content.

“Graduates opting for this programme should have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of above 8.5 and should be willing to focus more on research. It also saves a year’s time for them,” he said.

The External Ph.D. is offered to candidates who have two years of experience in any R&D organisation. TNAU permits the candidates to pursue the doctoral programme at their organisation itself under a research supervisor, approved by TNAU, in any of the 26 disciplines. The candidates will be given time between four and eight years to complete the thesis.

“Both the Ph.D. programmes are unique and are in great demand. These are available only in institutions that enjoy the stature of IITs. We expect more than 100 candidates to join the first batch of External Ph.D. The programmes will have an edge over the regular doctoral programmes,” the Dean said.

The university is also inviting applications from eligible candidates for admission to masters’ programmes in 39 disciplines and regular Ph. D. programmes in 26 disciplines.

The new addition in the PG courses is the master’s programme in Molecular Plant Breeding.

The programmes are offered at the university as well as its constituent colleges in Coimbatore, Madurai, Killikulam, Periyakulam, and Mettupalayam.

Application deadlines

Applications can be downloaded from the website www.tnau.ac.in. Last date for receipt of applications for master’s programme is June 29, and that for doctoral programmes is July 22. All correspondence will be done electronically. Candidates can check the university website/e-mail for updates.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme

Integrated Ph.D. Programme is a research programme. At the end of the successful completion, Master of Science and Ph.D. degree are awarded.

The first three semesters will consist of core and elective courses specialized in one subject (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics). The fourth semester will consist of advanced courses and project work. After the successful completion of comprehensive and project work, the student will continue with research leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Eligibility

• A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences/Chemical Sciences/ Mathematical Sciences/ Physical Sciences/ Engineering/ Technology and related areas as applicable to individual Schools, under the 10+2+3/4 system.
• Candidates admitted to School of Physics must have a valid score in Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) .
• The minimum requirement for admission to the programme is 55% marks or 6.0 out of 10 CGPA in the Bachelor's degree (as declared by the University).
• Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be made according to Government of India rules.

Selection procedure

Short-listed candidates who have applied for School of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics will be called for a written test and those short-listed in the written test will appear for interview(s). In the School of Physics, candidates with a valid JEST scorecard will be called for the interview

Duration of the Programme

The maximum duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme is 14 semesters.

The students will be awarded Institute scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- per month until the successful completion of the coursework and comprehensive examination provided the student maintains a minimum AGPA (annual grade point average) of 6.5.

After clearing the comprehensive examination the studentship will be made equivalent to that of UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF excluding the contingency grant and HRA. The studentship will be paid for a maximum of 14 semesters (including 4 semesters of course work) for each student provided (s)he is in good academic standing.

Fellowship stands automatically terminated at the end of 14 semesters for which the student registered.

Established in 2012, as the Department of Lifesciences is now rechristened as the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) offers two programmes, a 5-year-integrated MSc and PhD for aspirants of Biotechnology. DBT is supported by a team of faculty members who commit themselves to the highest standards both in academics and research. It represents one of the most vibrant and visible departments in terms of competition for admission among its aspirants, and the department boasts of its stuffy mural research grants, faculty ratio, internationally-trained faculty members with vast teaching experience, high-impact publications, and extra-mural research grants the faculty generate from various national and international funding agencies and also in terms of cutting-edge infra-structure facilities standing as a testimony to its success story as a department.

The vision of DBT is ‘to enlighten the potential of biotechnology to achieve newer heights in multi-disciplinary education, research and entrepreneurship, and instill human values and welfare via promoting innovations in biotechnology for nation-building’. The aim of DBT is ‘to provide a platform for the various interdisciplinary/ research oriented/advanced higher education in Biotechnology for translating the standards of personal and societal living’. The department was established with a mission of ‘ascertaining and broadcasting knowledge in Biotechnology through research and creative analysis, innovative teaching and learning and also to address problems affecting human health and world challenging environmental issues’.

Programmes Offered

Integrated m.sc. biotechnology.

The Biotechnology landscape today is marked by complexity and change, thinning new drug discovery, patents, generics and competitiveness. In today’s fast developing technology growing industrialization and modernization, Biotechnology holds a prominent place as few professions do. Biotechnology will continue to remain one of the prospective professions. Biotechnology student require special kind of interest and aptitude to be successful. Commercial potential of Biotechnology is immense, since the scope of its activities covers the entire spectrum of human life and it draws on the capabilities and resources of the entire biological world and even beyond. Biotechnology is an important thrust area in Science and Technology. Five-year integrated program in Biotechnology at CUTN is an Interdisciplinary Science that relies on Biology. Students will successfully learn fundamentals of Biology, and other subjects such as Mathematics, and Chemistry during the first year. From second year onwards, frontier areas such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetic Engineering, Bioinformatics, etc. will be introduced. At their final semester, students will be given a project by that they can have collaboration with both industry and reputed institutes across India. Manned by a pool of skilled professors, students will be trained on how to design experiments, data analysis and writing a manuscript. Their project work will be published in reputed journals in the field, by that they can avail international research opportunities at ease. Students will be motivated and guided for higher studies. They will also be informed about the competitive exams in their field of study. At the end when a Biotechnology student winds up the degree, the student’s capabilities and experience will span across in all verticals. The main objective of the course is to train the students in theory as well as hands on experience in state-of-art techniques in Biotechnology so at the end they will be invincible in this fast developing competitive global scenario.

Eligibility Criteria:

A Pass in the Plus two examination or equivalent of any recognized board in India with 60% marks (Biology, Physics & Chemistry) for General Category, 55% marks for OBC (Non-creamy layer) and 50% marks for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Duration of the programme: Five Years

Mode of selection: cuet score, sanctioned strength: 21, curriculum:, dbt supported m.sc. programme in biotechnology, duration of the programme: two years, ph.d. in biotechnology.

The department aims to attract the most promising and outstanding students to enrol for PhD programme. The department offers challenging competitive and comprehensive PhD program for our students with an intension of making them to be leaders of the Biotechnology research at a global level. We aim at giving educational and career guidance to our PhD students. The department is looking forward to hear from highly motivated students who have zeal to do their research at CUTN. The PhD program at the department has started successfully in November 2014.

Ph.D in Processing and Food Engineering

In response to the growing demands of man power from the Research and Development institutions of the Indian food processing sector as well as higher education sector and Government research institutes, postgraduate degree programmes of M.Tech. and Ph.D (Processing and Food Engineering)  were started in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore. The Postgraduate scholars are trained in all the latest food processing technologies such as preservation and handling of food, value-addition of agricultural and horticultural commodities, design of food processing equipment, packaging technology, dairy, meat, poultry and fish processing technologies,  etc ., They are also equipped in all the latest instrumentation and mathematical skills so that they can plan and conduct independent research in the field of food process engineering. So far 60 Ph. D scholars have completed the programme.

Processing and Food Engineering

Master Courses

After admission the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the basics of Molecular Biology as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 100 credits, of which 75 credits are exclusively earmarked for their Thesis Research.

Master’s thesis research

After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies, who would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic

Research internship

The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.

The courses offered at Department of Food Process Engineering, AEC&RI, TNAU, Coimbatore gave new vision on food process engineering.  The courses mainly, Advances in food process engineering, Textural and rheological characteristics of food materials, Processing of spices and plantation crops, advances in drying of food materials and Agricultural wastes and by-products utilization has given advancements in theoretical and practical knowledge. These courses made us to get novel ideas which to be used in career and for future reference. These courses provided confidence during our research as well as in competitive exams. These will help us to spread the knowledge to society too.

Ph.D and Integrated Ph.D programmes in Mathematics: Eligibility Requirements and Application Procedures

For 2024, all candidates for the IMSc Mathematics Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programmes need to apply on the IMSc Mathematics Admission Portal. There are two entrance exams considered for screening to the interview stage. 1. The NBHM scholarship written test which will be held in January 2024. While applying for this test, the candidate may choose either the "Doctoral Scholarship" option or the  “Master’s Scholarship” option or “Both”. 2. The CSIR UGC NET exam of June 2023 or December 2023 - the top 30 ranks in Mathematics are eligible to apply.

IMSc offers two doctoral programmes in mathematics - the PhD and integrated PhD. This webpage describes the eligibility requirements and application procedures for admission to the programmes. For all other details of the programmes, please refer this webpage   Eligibility requirements Applicants for the PhD programme should have completed a Masters degree in Mathematics or Statistics by the time they actually join the programme. Applicants for the integrated PhD programme should have completed a Bachelors degree in Mathematics or Statistics by the time they actually join the programme. However, exceptional candidates with a Bachelors or Masters degree in other fields will also be considered for admission to the integrated PhD programme.

How to apply Candidates aspiring for admission to the IMSc Ph.D/Integrated Ph.D programmes in Mathematics should apply on the IMSc Mathematics Admission Portal (opened on 02-02-2024). They should also have written one of the following exams.

1. The NBHM Scholarship written test of January 2024. While applying for the test on the NBHM portal, the candidate may choose either the "Doctoral Scholarship" option or the “Master’s Scholarship” or “Both"  option.  IMSc will use the merit list based on the D-scores/M-scores of this test to shortlist candidates for its PhD and Integrated PhD programmes. Please refer to the advertisement and FAQ on the NBHM webpage  for more information on  D-scores and M-scores. Candidates must apply directly on the NBHM portal in order to write the Scholarship Written Test.

2. The CSIR UGC NET exam of June 2023 or December 2023 - the top 30 ranks in Mathematics are eligible to apply. Candidates must apply directly on the CSIR NET portal to write this exam.  

To shortlist candidates for its Maths PhD and Integrated PhD programmes, IMSc will use the test performance scores from NBHM and from CSIR UGC NET and will send interview call letters to candidates who have passed the IMSc screening criteria and have applied on the IMSc  Mathematics Admission portal . Interviews will be held in March. Final selection of candidates will be based mainly on their performance in the tests and the subsequent interview, but will also take into account their academic track record.

General Information about the Screening tests.

The NBHM Doctoral Scholarship Written Test is held around the third week of January each year. It is announced on the NBHM Scholarships webpage and is advertised in leading national newspapers. Question papers and answer keys from 2005-onwards are available on the NBHM Scholarships webpage . The CSIR UGC NET examinations are held in June and December of each year and are advertised in leading national newspapers.
