Global Warming and Deforestation Essay IELTS Model Answer 1:

Here, the writer thinks of deforestation as the more severe problem.

Of late, the question of which poses a greater danger to our survival from global warming and deforestation forms the backbone of many conflicts in a number of circles. While some people believe that the effects of global warming, such as extreme weather conditions, are more far-reaching and, therefore, more concerning, some others are of the opinion that the rapid depletion of our forest cover caused by deforestation leads to more serious consequences like soil erosion, air pollution, and loss of habitat.

In my opinion, the impact of deforestation is more immediate and is, therefore, to be taken relatively more seriously. Global warming gives birth to extreme weather conditions like scorching hot summers, impossibly heavy rainfalls, and brutally cold winters. On average, the Earth’s temperature is rising by 1.5 and falling by 2.2 degrees Celsius in summers and winters, respectively. In this regard, while deforestation only impacts the local areas where the forest cover is reduced, global warming also impacts regions like Antarctica, where the problem of deforestation is not as grave. So, many people consider global warming to be the paramount concern when it comes to the survival of human life.

In contrast to the former viewpoint, some people strongly believe that deforestation is the more immediate cause of concern because of the shorter gestation period. We can see its repercussions like soil erosion, loss of wildlife, increase in cO2 , and droughts, among other problems. Recently news showed that after the state government of a metropolitan area ordered to cut down trees to procure more land to build complexes on, wild animals were seen roaming the streets. As if this wasn’t enough, the amount of carbon dioxide rose, and the area was flooded by the monsoon soon after.

To recapitulate, I believe that deforestation is more concerning than global warming because of its immediate impact on the local environment, and the people and government need to work in tandem to curb this practice in their district.

Explore all countries

Global warming and deforestation essay ielts model answer 2:, here, the writer considers both problems to be equally concerning.

With the dawn of industrialisation and urbanisation, our environment has changed drastically, and mostly for the worse. After witnessing the utter chaos on a global scale brought to life by alarming consequences of climate change, like ozone layer depletion, forest fires, and global warming, people have narrowed down the causes to two very serious environmental problems: global warming and deforestation. The question of which one has a more severe impact on our world has been the topic of discussion in recent decades.

Global warming has given rise to a myriad of issues, like rising temperatures and worsening air and water quality, which have long-lasting ramifications for this planet’s inhabitants. For instance, surging sea levels in cities situated on river banks have been a piece of alarming news that has prompted various governments to act on it. Additionally, the state of coral reefs in parts of Australia and other countries has also gained global attention.

Overall, the consequences of global warming are threatening the wide gamut of species existing on our planet. Deforestation has also caused a multitude of environmental issues, like frequent flooding due to the soil going loose owing to a depleting forest cover, loss of indigenous species, droughts, and more. A good example of this is the rising levels of pollution in overly industrialised countries which is a direct implication of fewer forests.

Conclusively, it is impossible to pick one out of the two – deforestation and global warming – and to claim it as the more serious problem because both have worked in tandem to increase environmental concerns. Therefore, we have to direct our efforts in the direction that curbs the effect of both issues equally and significantly if we don’t want to find ourselves on the brink of extinction in the near future.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Analysis (Global Warming) – Band 7

IELTS Writing Task 2 Analysis (Global Warming) – Band 7

Let us find out what band score a candidate deserves by doing complete analysis of his IELTS writing task 2 below.

Global warming is increasing day by day. What are the causes of global warming and what can be done to eradicate this global problem.

Candidate’s Response:

Nowadays, existance of human being is threatened by a serious environmental cause know as global warming. The causes of global warming are multifactorial, thus needs a systematic approach from government organizations and individuals to tackle the issue.

To begin with, the important causes of current globalwarming are, firstly, the industrial revolution in the modern times has led to an increased release of gases into the atmosphere like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, to name a few, these gases are known to increase the temperature of the atmosphere by trapping ultraviolet rays into the earth’s atmosphere. Moreoover, population explosion has resulted in excessive dependence on fossil fuels for cars, public transport and railways, these machines emit a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

In addition, deforestation done by the humans for their habitat and agriculture has resulted in huge loss of trees who are the cleaners of combustion gases from the atmosphere. Furthermore, ozone layer is depleted from many parts of earth, thus allowing harmful rays of sun to enter the earth’s surface. The measures that government needs to take to solve or to reduce the global warming are, first of all, conserving the forest area by implementing strict norms and encouraging to plant more tree in the cities. Secondly, release of gases from industries should be reduced by instaling pollution control filters. Thirdly, discouraging use of fossil fuels for vehicles and promoting usage of renewable source of energy such as solar energy, tidal power and wind power.

To conclude, global warming is a very serious issue, which needs to be addressed at the priority. The government and all the individuals should join hands to reduce this eminent threat and save earth and future generations.

Band 6+: Global warming is one of the most severe issues that the world is facing today. What causes global warming, and what can government and individuals take to tackle these issues?

In this modern era, global warming has become a significant issue ubiquitous across the globe and there are some causes like, greenhouse gas emission, deforestation and industrial processes has made it a bit of problem. However, government and individual can take some measurements to overcome from this situation. My ideas for this will be explained in forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, greenhouse gas emission is one of the major reasons behind global warming in which the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) for energy and transportation releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) into the atmosphere that can cause a big damp in ozone layer. Moreover, deforestation is also a key figure behind the rise of global warming. In simple words, trees absorb CO2, so deforestation for agriculture, urban development, or logging reduces this natural carbon sink and increase the amount of carbon dioxide present on air. For example, a survey was conducted in Delhi which estimated that quality of air in urban area decreased after removing 2500 trees for urbanization.

However, there are some measurements that can be helpful for controlling the global warming which can be taken by governments and individuals. Firstly, governments should invest in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels which can recover the damp of ozone layer and did not affect the quality of air. Secondly, individuals can use public transport as their primary means of transportation. Opting for public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving can reduce individual emissions.

In conclusion, tackling global warming requires coordinated efforts from both governments and individuals. By understanding its causes and implementing effective strategies, we can work together to mitigate its effects and protect our planet for future generations.

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

As certain regions of the world become increasingly warmer, people are forced to find alternative solutions for places to live. Discuss the causes and consequences of this change. Include explanations and examples for your arguments.

Write at least 250 words.

As some parts of the planet continue to experience higher temperatures, citizens must find different opportunities for survival. Discuss the reasons and outcomes of this change. Support your position with explanations and real instances.

TOPIC = global warming affecting human habitat

Controlling Idea = reasons for this and the consequences

*Apply critical thinking (questions: what, why and how)

What does it mean that global warming is affecting human habitat?

Some places, especially equatorial climate zones are becoming too hot, 45 degrees plus, and people are forced to move to cooler, more northern and southern climates.

Why are people forced to change their habitat due to increasing temperatures?

People are having difficulty being productive and staying healthy in places where there are extremely high temperatures. They are forced into air-conditioned environments to avoid heatstroke and sunstroke.

How does this happen? (Think about a real-world example)

Abdullah in Abud Abi is experiencing 55 degree temperatures. He feels that he is going to faint from heat stroke and decides to move to Toronto Canada.

———————-

What are the reasons for global warming forcing people to move?

Increasing greenhouse gases, CO2, and deforestation, as well as the natural change of surface temperatures as the earth changes its position in relation to the sun is increasing temperatures by more than one degree each year.

What are the consequences of people moving from very hot to cooler areas?

Increasing population density in certain regions, soaring real estate prices, increasing human competition for survival and conflict. Decreasing development in hot regions of the world. Potentially increase in illness in hot zones.

Introductory Paragraph

Global warming is forcing unprecedented migration of humans these days.

(Hook – introduces the topic, short, interesting) Global warming is forcing a major shift in the habitats of billions of human lives.  (Background – definition and importance) Some places, especially equatorial climate zones, are becoming too hot, 45 degrees plus, and people are forced to move to cooler, more northern and southern climates. Individuals have difficulty being productive and staying healthy in places of extremely high temperatures; they are forced into air-conditioned environments to avoid heatstroke and sunstroke. (Thesis, causes and consequences) Both human activity and natural change is causing this phenomenon and the consequences are increasing competition and conflict.

BODY 1 – (Topic sentence which further defines point 1 in the thesis)

Both the shift in the earths relative position to the sun as well as the rapid industrial evolution of humans are lending way to increasing surface temperatures. (Explanation – real world, quantitative, logical, directly flowing from your topic sentence.) Over the past couple of centuries, the earth has shifted both on its axis as well as distance to the sun which has resulted in temperature increase. This has been accelerated by automation and factories which create pollution that results in a greenhouse effect; further increasing the temperature on earth. (Example – specific and real world). In Saudi Arabia, the average temperature over the course of the past decade has increased by one degree Celsius annually, and now summer highs can reach over 50 degrees forcing many citizens to find other places to migrate to. Clearly, the exodus of millions of people to other parts of the world has major social and political impact.

As population densities and the demand for survival increase in limited areas of the world, so too does economic and physical conflict among individuals. Millions of people are seeking better lives in North and South America, as well as Europe and Asia where weather patterns can sustain human life. As a result, real estate prices are skyrocketing and nationalist sentiments are flaring. Cooler cities in Canada, like Victoria and Vancouver, have experienced a population boom of 50% over the past decade and this has resulted in average house prices being over a million dollars.

Conclusion (Point restated + argument strengthened + take-home-message)

In conclusion, both human use of resources and natural cosmic changes result in increasing temperatures on earth, and this has negative consequences for people’s lives. Namely, people are becoming more competitive and fighting for survival. Certainly, humanity as a whole must rapidly evolve socially and technologically in order to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The test-taker should fill the blank spaces with the number of words mentioned in the instruction box.

14 Answer: x

Question type: Matching Heading

Answer location: Paragraph B

Answer explanation: The suitable heading for paragraph B is x – Flood Risks because the introductory line of paragraph B illustrates the 5 million people living in areas regarded at risk of flooding in England and Wales. So, the answer is x.

15 Answer: i

Answer location: Paragraph C

Answer explanation: Paragraph C illustrates the truth that forests are essential to the atmospheric balance of the planet and human well-being. The paragraph also highlights the critical issue of global warming, which poses a threat to the planet and the fact that deforestation accounts for 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, we conclude that paragraph C demonstrates the atmospheric impacts. So, the appropriate heading is i – Atmospheric impacts.

16 Answer: iii

Answer location: Paragraph D, line 3

Answer explanation: The third line of paragraph D suggests that according to the research, an island that once had more than 15,000 people today has two-three thousand people who have survived on the island without trees. Various archaeological evidence proves that rampant deforestation not only led to the depletion of all the natural resources from the island but also greatly affected the number of people who survived on that island. Therefore, the suitable heading for paragraph D is iii – No trees, less people.

17 Answer: v

Answer location: Paragraph E, line 1 & line 4

Answer explanation: If we read through the first line in paragraph E, we deduce that forest management is essential to ensure that stocks are not depleted and whatever is cut down is replaced. The following fourth line states that consumer awareness is vital because simple changes in consumer activity can make a huge difference. Hence we understand that consumers must be conscious of taking care of the forests to bring a huge difference. Thus, v – Look after the forests is a relevant heading to Paragraph E.

18 Answer: ii

Answer location: Paragraph F

Answer explanation: When we go through paragraph F, we come to the conclusion that Japan is most often used as a model of perfect forest management. Here, “used as a model” refers to an example and “perfect” refers to ideal. Therefore, ii – Ideal Forestry management example is an appropriate answer for Paragraph F.

19 Answer: xi

Answer location: Paragraph G, line 3

Answer explanation: In the third line of paragraph G, it is mentioned that, x

“There is still a high demand for wood products in the country, and the majority of these resources are simply imported from other, poorer nations. Indonesia is a prime example of a country that has lost large swaths of its forest cover due to foreign demand from countries like Japan. This is in addition to other issues such as poor domestic forest management, weaker laws and local corruption. Located around the Equator, Indonesia has an ideal climate for the rainforest. Sadly much of this natural resource is lost every year. Forest cover is now down to less than 51% from 65.4% in 1990. This alone is proof that more needs to be done globally to manage forests.”

Hence, we infer from the quoted lines that Indonesia is at higher risk, as it has lost a major portion of its forest cover due to Japan’s demand for wood products, and it has a range of complex issues that make it poor. Furthermore, Indonesia has lost much of its natural resources, such as its forest cover, which is now less than 51%. Therefore, the suitable answer for paragraph G is xi – Poorer nations at higher risk.

20 Answer: viii

Answer location: Paragraph H, line 1

Answer explanation: After reading paragraph H, we understand that China has taken the lead in restoring its forests in recent years since the Chinese government launched the Three-North Shelter Forest Program in 1978 with the goal of completing the planting of a 2,800-mile-long green wall by 2050. Thus, the suitable heading for paragraph H is viii- Replanting forests.

21 Answer: 5 million

Question type: Summary Completion

Answer location: Paragraph B, line 2

Answer explanation: We can trace the information in Paragraph B, which illustrates that 5 million people are living in areas considered to be at risk of flooding in England and wales. On the other hand, Britain is witnessing increased rainfalls due to global warming and deforestation. Therefore, the answer that fits the sentence is 5 million.

22 Answer: store

Answer location: Paragraph B, line 5

Answer explanation: It is clearly mentioned in the fifth line of paragraph B that trees catch and store water to hold the soil together to prevent erosion. Thus, the answer is store.

23 Answer: landslides

Answer location: Paragraph B, line 6

Answer explanation: If we scan the 6th line in paragraph B, we can understand that the land is easily eroded with the removal of trees, increasing the risk of landslides. Thus, the answer is landslides.

24 Answer: emissions

Answer location: Paragraph C, line 2 & 3

Answer explanation: The statement is supported by references in the 2nd and 3rd line in Paragraph C, which illustrates that scientists agree that global warming is a real and serious threat to the planet, with deforestation accounting for 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, we conclude that deforestation also affects global warming by contributing 15% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, the answer is emissions.

25 Answer: management

Answer location: Paragraph E

Answer explanation: If we read paragraph E thoroughly, we can infer that forestry management is highly important to ensure that stocks are not depleted and that trees that have been chopped down are replanted. So, the answer that best fits, in summary, is management.

26 Answer: reverse

Answer location: Paragraph H, line 7

Answer explanation: Paragraph H demonstrates China leading the way by replenishing its forests. In the seventh line, it is mentioned that the forested land in China increased from 17% to 22% in 2015, making it one of the few emerging countries to reverse the negative trend. Thus, the reverse is the appropriate answer suiting the sentence.

Brainstorming Ideas

Refer to the following brainstorming ideas to get a solid understanding of the given answer.

  • Among the biggest threats to our climate is deforestation.
  • Apart from that, the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas for electricity, heat, and transportation contributes largely to the overall climate change across the globe.
  • Effective mitigation strategies for climate change include harnessing renewable energy resources, boosting energy efficiency, and large-scale reforestation efforts.
  • Adaptation strategies, including building flood defences, developing drought-tolerant crops, and designing buildings capable of tolerating extreme weather conditions, can help tackle climate change.

Q. What causes and solutions must the government implement to tackle climate change?

Ans . Climate change is a pressing issue that poses significant threats to our planet. It is primarily caused by human activities, which include the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, leading to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for electricity, heat and transportation is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, the industrial sector, which includes manufacturing, construction and mining accounts for 22% of global emissions. Deforestation, on the other hand, contributes to climate change as trees absorb Carbon dioxide and reduce its presence in the atmosphere. When forests are cut down, not only does the carbon dioxide absorption cease, but also the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere.

To tackle climate change, governments must implement two approaches: mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation strategies include transitioning into renewable energy resources, improving energy efficiency and promoting reforestation. For example, the government of Denmark has committed itself to becoming a 100% renewable energy country. Adaptation strategies involve making adjustments to reduce risks caused by climate change. This includes building flood defences, developing drought-tolerant crops, and designing buildings capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions. For instance, the Netherlands, a country significantly below sea level, has developed an extensive system of pumps to prevent seawater from flooding its land.

To conclude, while dealing with climate change is a daunting challenge, it is not insurmountable. With the right policies and actions, governments can play a pivotal role in mitigating its effects and safeguarding the planet for future generations.
