500 Words Essay On My Best Teacher

A teacher plays a significant role throughout all stages of life. Teachers impart life’s important values to students. Since teachers know that not every student has the same learning capacity, they carefully assess each student's potential before beginning lessons. A teacher is an excellent communicator of wisdom , fortune, and light, from whom we can learn much and benefit significantly throughout our lives.

My science teacher is one of my favourite professors. Her name is Mousumi Banerjee. She is the best teacher at the school and well-liked by all of my friends because she teaches very well.I appreciate her in-class teaching methods. She tell us to study the material she will cover in class the following day at home. The teacher explains the subject to the students and solicits any clarifications. The next day, she asked more questions on the same topic. This helps us understand a particular subject in great detail.

After covering two or three topics, she takes a test. She is passionate and enthusiastic about what they do and it shows in the way they teach us. She treats us with friendliness and never permits fear in us. Without hesitation, any student in the class or her cabin may ask her any question about the topic. While instructing the class, the teacher keeps an eye on every student's activity and disciplines the misbehaving ones. If you truly want success in life, she advises us to focus on our studies and always do as our teacher instructs. She never shows bias in the classroom between any of the students.

Her Importance In My Life

Mousumi ma'am has always been an important person in my life. She helped me select every course of action at various times. She gave me immense knowledge, skills, and positive behaviour expectations so I never felt lost. She always disciplined me and helped me throughout my life, even after school. In class 12th, I did a project under her in which she helped me immensely. It was a very successful project, and we won the 1st prize at the annual technical fest. That year she also got voted as the best teacher for that year. I was very happy for her as well. During my course selection for college, she guided me a lot. She helped me understand which course would be the best for me and sometimes helped me with those subjects.

She was always like a blessing in disguise for me.

A Special Moment In My Life

Last year on teacher's day, I, along with my classmates, gave her a surprise visit at her house and gifted her some chocolates as she loved chocolates. We also gave her a diary and a parker pen. She was delighted and almost burst into tears with happiness. We all had a wonderful time and then went for lunch in the nearby restaurant. It was a special moment for me as well as my friends.

We all have had teachers in our lives who have had a genuine impact on how we live. Every student has a unique space designated in their heart for their professors. There is no substitute for a teacher in a student's life. They give of themselves to make our lives successful.

Introduction:

Teachers are the ones who play a very vital role in shaping our future. From the Pre-Kinder Garden to your Post-Doctoral fellowships, they teach, impart knowledge, share ethical values, and imbibe morality, thereby shaping our personality as a strong one.

My Teacher:

Throughout our lives, we will be having many kith and kins who will hold a special place in our hearts. For me, one such person is my teacher. All of us, for sure, will definitely agree to the fact that the kinship between us and our kinder garden teachers could not be well-defined. I like my nursery teacher, so much. There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

The word “teacher” depicts a person that teaches. English dictionary defines teacher as “a person who teaches, especially one employed in a school”. A more recent definition of teacher in the linguistics field is “a tutor that interacts with the learners in order to facilitate good learning”.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

  • Compassionate
  • Open-minded
  • A good counselor
  • Friendly and most importantly
  • Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

Great philosopher Plato says, “A teacher is the physician of mind.” He leads the students from the dark valley of ignorance to the heights of learning and glory.

A scientist works on the physical body of man, but a teacher works on his mind and soul. That is why a wise man says,

A teacher must have the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of job and the courage of David.

Such a person is called an ideal teacher. He is the friend, philosopher, and guide of his students. He takes a personal interest in their studies and helps them at every step inside as well as outside the class. It is a great privilege and honor to be the student of such a teacher.

I have received lessons from a number of Teachers/Professors. All of them are able and efficient. I love and respect all of them. Out of those professors and teachers, I am much charmed by the towering personality of Mr. Shariq Javed. 500+ Words Essay on My Favourite Teacher

Teachers play an essential role in our life as an ideal teacher is responsible for the development of the students. Teachers play a vital role in creating a strong foundation of basic knowledge, not only regarding subjects but also for life. It is mostly what we learn at school that helps us throughout our lives when we have to make important decisions and perform other crucial tasks.

Having a particular teacher that you are especially comfortable with can be a massive advantage as it can help you move through your school years in an easier way. A good teacher can also act as a mentor, guiding you all through your life, even apart from just academics.

I am a student of 10th Class of a reputed private school. There are many great teachers in my school but everyone has that one teacher they are especially grateful to. Likewise, my favourite teacher is Mr Manish Khandelwal Sir. Manish Sir teaches us Maths, and he has a really attractive personality. He is very polite and humble and we all the students love him. He is also a person trusted the most by parents and teachers, as he constantly strives in creating a balanced environment in working hard at academics and having fun doing so.

Qualities of My Favorite Teacher

Manish Sir is tall and quite good looking. He is 32 years old and very experienced. His way of teaching is excellent. He believes in simple living and high thinking. All the students love him for his superb way of teaching and humble behaviour. He has an experience of 9 years in education, and he has done masters in Mathematics. He easily solves complicated mathematical equations.

He has a unique way of explaining his methods of solving problems. This way, he makes even the most complex of problems look simple and makes it very easy to understand for all students. He has all favourite teacher qualities in him, and has an exceptional amount of patience, which is one of the reasons why everyone considers him as the best teacher. He explains every question or doubt with so much patience and clarity and makes sure you understand them thoroughly.

He has an excellent command of English and unlike most teachers out there for whom writing impositions, formulas and theorems are important,  he focuses more on logical reasoning rather than memorising complicated equations. He is very disciplined and punctual and ensures that we follow these principles as well. He understands the importance of time and always comes on time. He possesses many of such appreciable qualities which are commendable and highly appreciated by students who want to pursue these qualities as well.

He is very enthusiastic but he is not too pushy and allows us to make the decisions on our own. He perfectly understands the balance between study and extracurricular activities and helps us stay on track with both. He believes in the overall development of the students and thus encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.

He prepares students for Maths olympiads so that their confidence can be boosted and they excel in a complex subject like Maths. Under his guidance, many students have won prizes in Maths olympiads, and even I have scored the highest marks securing the first position in many Maths competitions. He is an asset to our school as he has played a massive role in improving the overall image of our school including co-curricular and academic aspects and we students are fortunate to have him.

What Makes Him My Favourite Teacher?

Manish Sir is my favourite teacher because he is very humble, kind and polite. I love his way of teaching. He loves all students and doesn't believe in punishing them. He focuses more on conceptual clarity than burdening students with excessive homeworks. He never scolds students and never expresses his concerns in the form of anger. Instead, he talks to the students personally in a calm manner, in a way that helps us improve and wants to put in more effort.

He asks students to be honest with him and always gives equal attention to all the students. He never makes fun of any students and gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or equation, he puts extra effort to make him understand, and never tends to lose patience. He calmly explains no matter how many times he has to repeat the same question or statement. He is focused on making us understand every concept with utmost clarity and that is the reason why all students love him.

One of my most favourite qualities of Manish sir is that he keeps track of every student in the class; how they are performing or what are the things they are good at. He constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class and helps them to improve themselves and guides them throughout the learning process. He is one of the best teachers in our school who keeps constantly motivating their students and  guiding them in all spheres of life. Manish sir is especially known for not showing even the tiniest amount of favouritism. He treats all his students with an equal amount of fondness and love and cares for every one of us deeply.

He is very experienced and full of life. He tends to keep the entire class on a positive note and never exhibits any behaviour that deteriorates other people. He is concerned about people’s feelings and never hurts anybody. He is very sober and has a great sense of humour. His mathematical knowledge is very vast. Apart from being good at mathematics, he also preaches the importance of having sound knowledge in English and literature.

He loves reading books and always encourages students to spare some time to read novels instead of doing mindless activities like watching tv or playing video games. He also advises us to get more physical activity and play with other people our age and interact more as it would improve communication. He advises students to pursue their hobbies or interests. He understands students' problems and always provides them with a helping hand. He explains everything with examples and makes every concept so interesting to learn for students.

We students love to attend his class because he is very understanding. He covers each topic in detail and gives his full attention in class. He would be the first one to notice if even a single student loses track or starts dozing off. He would just suggest an alternative method or a simpler explanation instead of blaming the student for not paying enough attention to the class. He knows how to draw students' attention in class. He never assigns us too much homework, and after class, he provides us with regular assignments to assess our understanding of a particular topic.

The assignments are often designed to be more informative and research-oriented rather than just making us write down questions or paragraphs from the book and memorise them. By actually going through related articles and books, we gain a greater amount of knowledge and this way, we tend to remember what we learn for a long time as well.

In case if any student fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in a particular chapter, he doesn't shout at them but instead makes them understand the concept again. This way, we students understand that whatever he is doing is for our own benefit and we tend to work harder to improve ourselves. These are a few of the things he does that makes him different from the other teachers and appears approachable to everyone around him. I have never seen a humble and polite teacher like him, and one day I will try to be like him in my career.

Manish Sir is not just a great teacher but also my ideal person. He has all the favourite teacher qualities, and everyone loves him. I am lucky to be his student, and I will always follow his principles in my life. Even after leaving this school, he will remain my favourite teacher, and I will never forget him. I will always remember what he has taught me through example, and I will try to be a great person like him in the future.

Academic Achievements Achieved with the Help of My Teacher

I would like to talk about one of my favorite teachers who has had a profound impact on my academic achievements. Miss Garcia was my seventh grade English teacher. She was the one who encouraged me to develop my writing skills and expand my vocabulary.

Miss Garcia made a big impression on me because she was always so enthusiastic about her subject. She made learning fun and engaged all of her students in the lessons. I remember one particular lesson where we had to write an essay about our favorite book. I wasn’t sure what to write about, but Miss Garcia helped me come up with a topic and gave me some great tips for structuring my essay.

Thanks to Miss Garcia’s guidance, I got an A on that essay and realized that I really enjoyed writing. From then on, I started paying more attention in class and participating more in discussions. My grades started to improve and I even won a few writing competitions. Some Fun Memories

Some fun memories I have of my favorite teacher are from when we would have impromptu dance parties in the middle of class. She would put on music and we would all dance around the room. It was a great way to get us moving and shaking after sitting for so long. We would also have competitions to see who could do the best impression of her. I always won, but she would give everyone a good laugh.

My favorite teacher has been a great source of inspiration and guidance throughout my school career. She was always there to help me with any questions that I had, no matter how simple or complex they might have been. Her individualized instruction made an impact on my academic performance and I am grateful for the time she took out of her day to ensure that I was successful. My Best Teacher

Essay No. 01

During my school life, I have come across several teachers. No one has impressed me so much as our English teacher.

Mr. Leo has been teaching me English for the last two years. He is a very lovable person, soft spoken and well mannered. He used to come, neatly dressed. He used to move about quietly, though he always bears an assured look of a scholar.

It is a pleasure to listen to him when he teaches English whether it is a prose or poetry and he would leave his mark on it. He always uses very simple words, so that even an average student also follows him. He has always been very methodical in his approach. When he finds somebody has difficulty he would spare no pains to make the student understand his teaching of poetry has been marvelous. He would simply get into the spirit of the poet. Gifted with some histrionic talent, he would carry the whole class with him in the enjoyment of the poem.

During his leisure hours, he can be found in the school library browsing among literary magazines. One can approach him easily and have doubts cleared. Bu his knowledge, character and day to day life he leaves a profound influence on the intellectual and moral character of his pupils. He leaves the permanent stamp of his personality on their moral character. One great quality in him is that he never bears malice towards anybody. He is a model for all teachers.

In this essay, I will discuss the importance of experience as a teacher and share some of the lessons that I have learned through my own experiences.

One of the most important things that we learn from experience is how to make better decisions. With each decision that we make, we learn from our mistakes and become better at making future choices. For example, if we make a bad investment, we learn to be more careful with our money in the future. If we get into a car accident, we learn to drive more safely. We can apply the lessons we learn from experience to all areas of our lives, including our personal relationships, our careers, and even our own health.

Another important thing that we learn from experience is how to deal with difficult situations. When something goes wrong, we learn how to cope with the stress and figure out a way to fix the problem. We also learn how to communicate better and work together as a team to solve problems. This is especially important in our careers, where we often have to work with others to achieve a common goal.

The lessons that we learn from experience are invaluable, and they help us to grow into better individuals. I believe that experience is the best teacher, and I am grateful for all of the lessons that I have learned through my own experiences.

Therefore, experience is the most valuable asset one could have in life. With experience, comes wisdom, and with wisdom, comes a better understanding of the world around us. I believe that experience is the key to a successful life, and I encourage everyone to learn from their own experiences as much as possible.

Experience is the best teacher Explanation:

As the saying goes, experience is the best teacher. This means that there is no better way to learn than through personal experiences. While formal education and learning from others can provide valuable knowledge, there is nothing quite like first-hand experience.

There are many reasons why this phrase holds true. First and foremost, our own experiences are unique to us. No two people will have the exact same experiences, and therefore the lessons learned will also be different. This allows for a personalized learning experience that is tailored to our individual needs and circumstances.

Additionally, experiencing something firsthand allows us to truly understand its impact. We can read about and hear about certain concepts or situations, but until we actually go through it ourselves, we may not fully comprehend its effects. For example, we can read about the importance of time management, but it is not until we have a busy schedule and struggle to balance everything that we truly understand its significance.

Experience also allows us to make mistakes and learn from them. In fact, making mistakes and learning from them is an integral part of the learning process. By experiencing failures and obstacles, we are able to develop problem-solving skills and resilience, which are essential qualities for personal growth and success.

Furthermore, experience provides a deeper level of understanding. When we learn from others or through formal education, we may only scratch the surface of a topic. However, experiencing something firsthand allows us to delve deeper into it, gaining a more comprehensive understanding.

It is also worth noting that experiences can come in different forms. They can be positive or negative, big or small, but each one offers a valuable lesson. Even the smallest experiences, such as trying a new food or visiting a new place, can teach us something about ourselves and the world around us.

Examples How Experience is the Best Teacher:

1. Learning from Mistakes

We all make mistakes, whether big or small. However, it is through these mistakes that we learn valuable lessons and gain experience. Often, we may think we know what the right decision is or how to handle a certain situation, but when things go wrong, we realize that there was a better way to approach it. Experience teaches us to think critically, evaluate our actions, and make wiser choices in the future.

2. Building Resilience

Experience also helps us build resilience. When we face challenges or failures, we learn how to adapt and bounce back. Through these difficult experiences, we become stronger and more resilient, making us better equipped to handle whatever life throws at us. This is especially important in today’s constantly changing and unpredictable world.

3. Developing Skills

Experience is a great way to develop skills, whether it be in a particular field or just general life skills. For example, if you want to become a skilled public speaker, the more experience you have speaking in front of an audience, the better you will become at it. Similarly, through real-life experiences, we learn how to handle different situations and develop important skills such as problem-solving, communication, and leadership.

4. Broadening Perspectives

Experience also allows us to broaden our perspectives. The more experiences we have, the more exposure we get to different cultures, beliefs, and ways of thinking. This helps us become more open-minded and understanding towards others. It also enables us to see things from different angles and find creative solutions to problems.

5. Creating Memories & Finding Passion and Purpose

Lastly, experience is about creating memories. Whether it’s through travel, trying new things, or tackling challenges, these experiences are what make life meaningful and memorable. They shape us into who we are and give us stories to tell. As the saying goes, “We do not remember days; we remember moments”. Experience is the best teacher because it allows us to

Lastly, experience helps us discover our passions and purpose in life. By trying out different things, we learn what we enjoy doing the most and what gives us a sense of fulfillment

Short Essay on My favourite Teacher (125 words)

The teacher’s day is the most important function of our school. It is held every year on the 5th of September. The teacher’s day was celebrated in our school on September 5 this year also.

All teachers took an active part in the celebration. Preparation for the function was made on a large scale. The function began with “Guru Vandana”. The student of the school controlled the classes.

The honorable chief guest spoke about the importance of the ‘Teachers Day’. Then the principal thanked the teachers for the co-operation and praised the student for the active role for the participating in the function. At 5 p.m. the function came to an end. We returned back home in the evening with a smile on our face.

Essay on My favourite Teacher for Class 3-9 | Essay on my favourite teacher

I still remember the day, when soon after being admitted to a school, I met a short and fair man in my class. They said he was our new class teachers. Mr Mahesh Chandra has been my class teacher since then.

He teaches mathematics. Our school is known for its good teachers, and Mr. Mahesh Chandra, I think, is the best of them. Mr Mahesh Chandra’s strong point is that he always makes his subject interesting.

While the student of other classes complains that Mathematics is very dull subject, we, the student of class X, find it most interesting.

Though Mr Chandra is short, he looks smart. There is a glow in his eyes that makes his personality impressive. His short hair-cut and his white clothes and ever-smiling face reminds us of the days of ‘Gurus’.

He may not be very handsome, yet he is very impressive. There is a magical quality in his voice which expresses his inner goodness.

Outside the classroom, Mr Mahesh Chandra is our friend. In free period, when student sit on the lawn or gossip in some corner, Mr Chandra is always among them. He goes to them and talks to them. He has known the personal life of every student.

Whenever somebody is in difficulty, Mr. Chandra is the first to extend his helping hand. The moment he knows that a particular student is unable to pay his fee because of poor economic condition, he quietly pays for him.

To me, Mr Chandra is the real ‘Guru’. His love for his students, his knowledge of the subject and his helpful attitude, all these make him lovable. He is dear to every student.

Essay on My Best Teacher

After parents, teachers are the blessings which we all have by God. In school days every child has a favorite teacher, and best teacher to whom he, or she cannot forget throughout his, or her life time.

My story is same, I have a teacher in my school her name was “Wehbavi” by religion she was Christian, and by heart she was pure gold. I have never seen such beautiful soul in my life. We met on the very first day of my school, I was crying like a baby, and shouting, and screaming, that was the moment when she came near to me, and hold me in her arms, and give two Cadburys’.

She assured my parents, and they left. I was admitted in grade third, as it was my first day I was very much confused. She was the only one who remained with me throughout the day, and relaxed me. I spend my 9 years in that school, and throughout the whole period she is the one with whom I discuss my issues whether it was regarding to my studies, or whether it was regarding to any of my personal matter. I never feel ashamed of telling my feelings to her. And she always guides me the right path.

When it was my last paper of second year we received news from teachers that Miss Wehbavi died in a car accident that morning that was the heart breaking news I have ever faced in my life.

She was a gem that cannot be forgotten.  Pure Soul, May she rest in peace.

A Better Way to Teach History: On Adapting James Loewen’s “Lies My Teacher Told Me”

Nate powell on book bans and the problem of american “heroification”.

My heart goes out to everyone tasked with teaching history, civics, and media literacy to young people in our era. As a parent of two, it’s daunting to equip my kids with the critical thinking skills they’ll need to thrive in an increasingly foreboding future, while imparting a sense that there is even a future to build and work toward—especially when lessons of the past are routinely ignored, paywalled, or banned outright.

What an experience, then, to release a book on misinformation, national myth, and the suppression of accurate history in the middle of 2024. As a comic.

My new graphic adaptation of James Loewen’s landmark 1995 work Lies My Teacher Told Me stares down a daunting set of challenges to historical truth in a shared reality, and the power and breadth of our diverse perspectives as citizens. Three decades ago, Loewen’s ideas helped crystallize and articulate the very terms and issues currently at the heart of this struggle today, and I prioritized keeping the gravity of those ideas at the forefront of my adaptation.

So what lies there?

The late, great Loewen succinctly broke down why history is often considered the most boring subject in high school. Lies My Teacher Told Me opens with what gets lost in the shuffle: that most students can’t stand the standard classroom experience of learning American history.

This problem escapes the confines of performative partisan outrage. It’s crucial that those groans from the back of the classroom be validated and truly heard, allowing us to understand its relationship to how history textbook authors approach what to include and omit.

The long shadow cast by a feel-good nationalist myth is often at odds with our endlessly more interesting (and inspiring) factual history. Textbooks lean toward that feel-good nationalism due to very human factors: educators’ fears of retaliation, publishers’ desire for adoption, the ongoing death of expertise, and the fact that nobody’s really at the wheel writing, editing, or updating these things. Most textbooks are simply copies of each other, propagating errors and misinformation alike.

Loewen correctly identifies “heroification” as a central problem: although historical figures starring as heroes in our textbook narratives are messy, interesting, complicated humans just like us, their most fascinating aspects are often omitted in favor of a simple, flattened interpretation of history to memorize for the quiz on Friday. What does remain often doesn’t make sense on the textbook page because those inconvenient details are still crucial to a fuller historical context.

Believe it or not, the power of ideas as a driving force in history is often left out of textbooks as well. Out of fear of offending conservative white textbook adoption boards, lawmakers, parents and administrators, chapters on the American Civil War conspicuously lack both the idealism and moral imperative behind the abolition of slavery. Many textbooks indirectly endorse the claim, that no one fought to preserve enslavement, and no one fought to end it—leaving students vulnerable to long-surviving myths and misconceptions which have regained a foothold in the American consciousness over the past decade.

As a Southern child of the 1980s, I was taught the same commonly accepted Southern myths of the slaveholding South, the Lost Cause fantasy, and the Confederate myth of Reconstruction which were taught to my parents, and to their parents before them. To break the cycle of this pervasive multigenerational failure and repair our understanding  requires illuminating the cracked foundation beneath the lessons of history textbooks.

American history is often framed as an epic tale of relentless, consistent progress throughout our society. In doing so, authors paint themselves into a corner, avoiding any historical backsliding of that progress, particularly when covering the experiences of Black and Native Americans. I feel the shaky footing of what real progress has been achieved in my own lifetime as organized campaigns push to undo and outlaw the teaching of a more accurate and complex historical understanding.

The feeling of powerless that comes from absorbing history in this way is made more acute when textbooks minimize our own effectiveness as citizens in shaping our nation’s history. This comes into stark focus as we scramble to defend against and respond to future lies—unheralded challenges to the notion of a shared set of facts in a fractured, highly curated informational landscape.

Making long-form comics is a slow, meticulous process. It’s pretty nerve wracking to do relevant work about events unfolding in real time without knowing what kind of world the book will be released into. While collaborating with John Lewis and Andrew Aydin on the March trilogy in the 2010s, multiple modern activist movements swelled in ongoing pursuit of the unfulfilled promise of multiracial democracy. The United States had arrived at a nexus point; all of us, its tornado children.

Month by month, work on March felt less about decades-old history and more like connective tissue to the present moment, directly reintroducing the principles and strategies of decentralized nonviolent mass protest for a new generation. When I finished Save It For Later , an essay/memoir hybrid about activism, parenthood, and intergenerational reckoning, it was sent to the printer a mere week before Election Day in 2020, to be released into a completely unknowable political, social, and public health landscape.

For all of these books, I carried a responsibility to write and draw for that unknowable future , critically anticipating possible challenges to my work. I strived to make these books’ ideas bulletproof, knowing they’d need to stand against the vulnerabilities of time, pressure, and the chosen medium.

Releasing this new adaptation in comics form is a meaningful choice—one relevant to the looming threat from coordinated book-ban campaigns. Comics are disproportionately targeted for censorship and removal for multiple interconnected reasons, including basic misconceptions about comics, their readership, intentions, and capacity to convey information, as well as a longstanding existential battle for comics’ legitimacy as a medium, a format, and a language of its own.

People often want comics to be the single thing they’ve each decided comics should be—which often makes a comics an easy target.

Oh, they’re “not just for kids anymore.”

So they must be “for mature readers.” They’re “graphic,” after all. Says so in the name, right?

Oh wait, now they’re not strictly for adults anymore—so they must be unserious literature.

Such insistence on a monolithic definition reveals a public difficulty recognizing that comics are as boundless and versatile as prose—and in the hands of cartoonists with skill and vision, even more impactful. Comics allow empathy to grow by requiring readers to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. Our capacity to feel, and to be moved by each other, is both essential to democracy and the epitome of our own humanity.

Since 2021, a coordinated far-right campaign has gained significant ground in banning and restricting access to various books at schools and libraries, with special focus on suppressing the histories, voices and experiences of LGBTQ people and people of color. Graphic novels and graphic nonfiction have been disproportionately targeted within these waves of intimidation and information-control legislation.

It’s fitting that contemporary book-ban legislation is as copy-and-paste as many standard history textbooks, making this a highly specific meme war waged against the overdue process of these books finally being updated, corrected, and contextualized for the twenty-first century. Comics’ visual nature is also a built-in vulnerability, as book-banners can find a single decontextualized image upon which to build an objection without actually reading any of the book —and comics, at their core, are built upon contextualizing images and words with each other throughout.

James Loewen recognized all of these factors at play, which was a central reason he asked me to adapt his work into the comics medium in the first place. I hope I’ve been able to do justice to his influential ideas while updating and revitalizing it for new generations of curious minds.

I feel in my bones that this adaptation of Lies My Teacher Told Me is an essential text for our shared moment as a nation, and as a wounded democracy. The process of learning, questioning, and contextualizing is as perpetual as the nature of history itself as a living, breathing thing. There is no endpoint to our individual curiosities or our questioning nature as humans—it’s how we grow as thinkers, citizens, and neighbors to each other. Beware any who suggest otherwise.

about essay my best teacher

LAPS Foundation News:

The Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation (LAPS Foundation) has awarded six community service scholarships and one career technical scholarship for students in the Los Alamos High School Hilltopper Class of 2024.

Each student who received a scholarship wrote an essay about their Educator of Distinction – someone who has had a positive impact on the student during their time in the Los Alamos Public Schools. The Foundation held a reception at the high school in May for the students, their families and their educators of distinction.

Congratulations to our community service scholarship winners and their educators of distinction:

  • Luke Favorite is the son of Kandice and Jeff Favorite. This fall Luke will attend Purdue University and major in aerospace engineering. Luke was selected as the most meritorious recipient among this already impressive group of students and was awarded with the Rynd Award. This award is made possible by a large bequest left to LAPS Foundation by Ed and Betty Rynd, a couple with a passion for community service and our schools. Luke selected Debbie Grothaus, LAHS physics teacher, as Educator of Distinction. Luke described Grothaus as “the greatest teacher and mentor that I have had in my entire LAPS career” and said this about her: “She has some inexplicable presence that makes her pleasant to be around, and that in tandem with her outright enthusiasm about physics added a lot to my enjoyment of her class and online school as a whole. I would venture to say that it was her class that made me care about school despite all of the craziness and how easy it would have been just to have given up.”
  • John Cawkwell is the son of Michela Ombelli and Marc Cawkwell. He will attend the University of California at Berkeley and major in physics. John also selected Debbie Grothaus, his physics teacher, as Educator of Distinction. In his essay Cawkwell wrote, “Though a majority of the class occurred during the COVID pandemic, Mrs. Grothaus always made her lectures absorbing and informative. Her class made an otherwise difficult year for learning one where I was able to expand my knowledge of a subject I otherwise knew little about … She taught me the importance of having a strong work ethic and commitment to education during a critical time in my life when online schooling made such lessons difficult to teach. It is this life advice that allowed me to succeed at my first AP exam, and it has allowed me to succeed in my subsequent years of high school.”
  • Rebecca Li is the daughter of Yuhong Qin and Shengtai Li. She will attend the University of California at Los Angeles and major in psychobiology this fall. Rebecca chose Christine Engelbrecht, her 10th grade English teacher, as Educator of Distinction.

Li wrote, “Ms. Engelbrecht was unlike any other teacher I had encountered in high school. Rather than adhering to a strict curriculum, she encouraged critical thinking through in-depth analysis, pushing her students to address the implicit themes of what we were reading and writing rather than what was obvious. . . Academically, Ms. Engelbrecht has pushed me in ways no teacher has ever done, forcing me to reason critically and pave new methods of thought. And yet, it is her openness and supportiveness as a teacher that changed my identity, creating who I am today … Her guidance, encouragement, and support continue to inspire and motivate me to become a better writer and person than I was yesterday.”

  • Samuel Pesiri is the son of Dave Pesiri and Deborah Apodaca. He plans to study political science and economics at the University of San Diego. Samuel chose Audrey Juliani, his 6th grade teacher at Barranca as Educator of Distinction. He wrote, “Ms. Audrey Juliani showed me how to truly be a person of character … When we started the Caesar English Unit, I realized my passion for learning such challenging concepts, and it felt historical and relevant. Ms. Juliani pushed me to do the curriculum and more; she was so encouraging with me …”
  • Akshay Swaminarayan is the son of Gayathri Sriram and Sriram Swaminiarayan. He plans to study biochemistry at the University of Arizona this fall. Akshay chose Andrea Weems, his GATE teacher at Pinon, as Educator of Distinction. He wrote in his essay, “Ms. Weems taught in an engaging way that I had not been introduced to … she made sure we were all immersed in the assignments and that we all participated and understood. Beyond academics, her classroom was a place where I felt secure and safe … Her support throughout my years in GATE and beyond altered the way I saw myself and instilled the much-needed confidence to succeed in life. Ms. Weems was truly the most influential and memorable teacher that I have had so far. As I cross the bridge from high school to college, I intend to make her proud in my pursuit of higher education.”
  • Praveen Swaminarayan is also the son of Gayathri Sriram and Sriram Swaminiarayan. Praveen will attend the University of California at Irvine and major in civil engineering. Praveen chose Nikol Strother, his math teacher at LAHS, as Educator of Distinction. Praveen wrote, “Ms. Strother will always be my favorite teacher because of her positive outlook on education, her passion towards teaching math, and her willingness to speak out when she doesn’t like something. I know that her classroom is a space where I will always feel safe and welcomed. Ms. Strother significantly improved my High School experience and for that I will always be thankful for having her as my teacher.”

Congratulations to the career technical scholarship winner and educator of distinction:

  • Chad Kuzmack is the son of Doreen and Michael Kuzmack. He will attend San Juan Community College in the fall to study radiology. Chad selected Michelle Bane, LAMS clinical counselor as Educator of Distinction. Chad wrote, “Ms. Bane did her absolute best to ensure I would succeed in high school and beyond, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic, which was a hard time for everybody across the globe … Through all that I have accomplished in both academics and in life, I would not be the person that I am without my Educator of Distinction, Ms. Bane. I can never repay her for all that she’s done for me and will forever be grateful to her.”

LAPS Foundation is honored to award scholarships to these outstanding graduates and to recognize the teachers who have made such an important impact on their lives.

A Searing Reminder That Trump Is Unwell

His bizarre diatribe at the RNC shows why the pro-democracy coalition is so worried about beating him.

Trump at the RNC

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here.

Donald Trump’s bizarre diatribe at the Republican National Convention shows why the prodemocracy coalition is so worried about beating the GOP nominee—even if it means that Joe Biden must step down.

But first, here are three new stories from The Atlantic .

  • It’s official: The Supreme Court ignores its own precedent.
  • What the Microsoft outage reveals
  • “Hillbilly” women will get no help from J. D. Vance.

Not Comparable

It’s been quite a year in politics, what with President Biden facing calls to drop out of the race and Trump having a meltdown in public after an assassination attempt and …

I’m sorry, did I say a year ? I meant a week .

So much has happened, and political events have become so freakish, that we can all be forgiven for losing our bearings a bit. For the past few days, I’ve felt like Homer Simpson after he accidentally turned a toaster into a time machine and came back to find that Ned Flanders was the unchallenged dictator of the world.

But in the midst of all this, two things remain clear:

  • Joe Biden is showing significant signs of frailty and faces real opposition within his party to continuing his campaign.
  • Donald Trump is emotionally unwell.

These are not comparable problems.

Nor did Biden and Trump have equally bad weeks. Biden is facing a revolt in his own party and is now recovering from COVID. Trump was nearly killed by a young loner .

Biden claims to still be in the race, an answer many elected Democrats have refused to accept. My colleague Russell Berman wrote yesterday afternoon that Senator Peter Welch of Vermont believes that the Biden campaign may be at an end; more telling is that Russell described Welch as the only member of the upper chamber making that argument, but from the time that Russell wrote that article to this afternoon, three more sitting Democratic U.S. senators— Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Jon Tester of Montana, and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico—called for Biden to step down.

The case for Biden leaving the race is evident to anyone who’s watched him over the past month. He seems to be no better in his public outings than he was during the debate, and has sometimes seemed worse. As I’ve said here , I don’t think that means he can’t run the country for the remainder of his term, but Trump is going to be fired up and on the road, and I doubt that Biden can match that level of engagement, which could be decisive in a race that will be won on slim margins in a handful of states. I suspect that the people voting to save democracy would vote for Biden if he were governing from a cryostatic tube, but the Democrats calling on him to wrap it up have perfectly valid fears that he could lose and take the down-ballot races with him.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Convention was a searing reminder that Trump is a vengeful autocrat with obvious mental deficits who has surrounded himself with a crew of vicious goons.

I approached Trump’s speech with genuine curiosity. I was for most of my life a working political scientist, and I have written speeches for politicians; I think I know a good one when I see one. So I watched last night to see if Trump, tamed by a brush with death, would strike a new tone or, at the very least, try to make peace with one of his most hated enemies: the teleprompter.

No chance. To be fair, some people who watched the speech thought that the first 10 minutes or so, in which Trump recounted being injured, were good, even thoughtful. I thought they were terrible; although Trump and his people have emphasized Trump’s defiance in the moment after he was hurt, his blow-by-blow account of the incident came across to me as creepy and solipsistic rather than brave.

Contrast that with Ronald Reagan, the previous president injured in an attempt on his life. Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post reminded us today that Reagan appeared before Congress a month after he was nearly killed. (His injuries were severe and life-threatening.) Reagan was on the Hill to talk about the economy, but he started by thanking the country for its prayers and good wishes, noting a cute letter he got from a child while he was in the hospital, and paying tribute to the people injured alongside him. This digression took all of four paragraphs, a matter of a few minutes. “Now, let’s talk about getting spending and inflation under control and cutting your tax rates,” he then said. Trump, however, droned on about how much the human ear can bleed, while the screens behind him showed huge pictures of blood on his face. He then went over to the equipment owned by Corey Comperatore, the volunteer firefighter killed in the attack, and kissed the helmet. Some in the crowd may have loved it, but I prefer a bit more stoicism in national leaders; I’ve always thought that Trump’s penchant for hugging and kissing flags was weird, and planting a kiss on the headgear of a dead man was even weirder.

And then things really went off the rails. If you didn’t sit through it, I can’t blame you; it was the longest presidential-nomination-acceptance speech on record. Basking in the friendliest audience he will ever find on this planet, Trump couldn’t help himself. He was supposed to be like a band at a concert doing a tight set, playing some favorites for the loyal fans, introducing a little new material, and gaining a wider audience. Instead, he blew the chance and ran overtime as he noodled, improvised, and even mangled some of his classics.

The speech wasn’t written that way, of course, but Trump can’t stick to a script. You can always tell when Trump is trying to read the teleprompter: His shoulders tense up, he cocks his head and squints, and he rushes through words he has clearly never seen before. It doesn’t help that Trump’s writers stuff his speeches with baroque constructions that are supposed to be soaring and majestic but that always end up sounding more like dollar-store Churchill imitations. Trump struggles with these complex sentences, and then he abandons them—and that is when the real Trump comes out, in all his whiny and aggrieved glory.

I do not have the space (or the endurance) to relive those moments with you, but they were the ramblings of a man who has serious psychological problems . All of it was on display last night: rage, paranoia, pettiness, desolating selfishness.

I’m always sorry to leave readers with these sorts of observations just before a weekend, but much of the media response to Biden’s troubles and Trump’s madness has been mired in equivalences that obscure what’s happening to both men, and what’s at stake for the nation. (As I was writing this, for example, a Washington Post newsletter arrived in my inbox and told me that the GOP had just wrapped up “an energized, focused convention.” That’s an interesting description of a Republican gathering that featured a sex worker, Hulk Hogan, and a spaced-out Trump.)

Yes, Biden is old, and he’s having trouble communicating. The people expressing serious concerns about him have good reason to worry about both his health and his ability to defeat Trump. He might be out of the race by next week. But Trump is mentally and emotionally unwell. He and his valet, J. D. Vance, are not going anywhere. The real tragedy is that, in a serious country, Biden might step down without incident, and a normal race would continue, because decent people would have banished Trump from the public square long ago.

  • The new Trump is always the old Trump.

A collage of photos of John Fogerty, and the author of this piece performing as John Fogerty

How I Faked My Way to Rock Stardom

By J. R. Patterson

Before John Fogerty’s life became mine, there was cold. In November 2012, I was 22 and had left the family farm in Manitoba to find work in the oil fields of Alberta. I arrived during a bust and, because work was not immediate, spent the days driving my Ford F-150 around the country surrounding Calgary, listening to AM radio and my small collection of CDs—a few Rolling Stones albums, some outlaw-country records, and the complete discography of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Ford was what they call a SuperCab, with a rear backward-opening half door and a narrow bench for a back seat. At night, lacking the money for a hotel, I would find a quiet place to park, crawl into the back seat, and stretch out on the bench, my clothes wrapped around my boots for a pillow. I kept my guitars—an acoustic Martin and an electric Epiphone Les Paul—beside me to warm them, lest they crack in the cold. The nights weren’t kind to me either, and I often woke up shivering, the world outside covered with frost or snow. To allay myself, I’d run the engine for a while and put on Creedence.

Some of you may have noticed that I don’t particularly admire Trump’s running mate, Senator J. D. Vance of Ohio. (Vance has noticed it too.) I wrote about his RNC speech here . I remain appalled at Vance’s casual betrayal of the people he claims to care about, the poor and working-class whites he grew up with in Ohio.

Perhaps I feel this more keenly because I grew up in a working-class town in Massachusetts, and I think working people deserve a better spokesperson than an opportunistic plutocrat like Vance. You may find it striking to think of New England as a depressed area; people who are not from the region probably think of it as a lovely expanse of college greens and church steeples and foliage. And it is—but much of New England was once home to mills and factories that produced shoes, textiles, and even military swords. (The bronze doors of the U.S. Capitol’s House wing were cast in 1903 in my hometown of Chicopee.) By the late 1970s, many of those workplaces, abandoned as industries moved out of the Northeast and sometimes out of the United States, were rotting hulks.

If you’d like to read a memoir that shows what it was like to grow up in Massachusetts in those days, I’d suggest Townie: A Memoir , by Andre Dubus III, who is near my age and grew up in a mill town much like mine. It’s not a pretty read, but it is evocative—so much so that some passages made me wince. I can affirm that it captures the reality of growing up in a part of America, far from Vance’s hometown, that was also plagued by dysfunction and decline.

The Limits of GenAI Educators

  • Jared Cooney Horvath

about essay my best teacher

Three fundamental problems with using LLMs as teachers, tutors, and trainers.

While generative AI tools have been heralded as the future of education, more than 40 years of academic research suggests that it could also harm learning in realms from online tutoring to employee training for three reasons. First, the best student-teacher relationships are empathetic ones but it is biologically impossible for humans and AI to develop mutual empathy. Second, AI might help us bypass the boring task of knowledge accumulation but it is only through that process that we develop higher order thinking skills. Finally, digital tools are notoriously distracting and multitasking diminishes learning. As we think about the benefits of new technology, we must also consider the risks.

Since the widely acclaimed release of ChatGPT 4, generative AI has been touted by many as the savior of education. Case in point: British education expert Sir Anthony Seldon has predicted that by 2027, AI will replace human teachers on a global scale.

Donald J. Trump was back on his feet. He had just been shot at, his white shirt was undone and his red hat was no longer on his head. Blood streaked across his face as riflemen patrolled the perimeter of the stage. A pack of Secret Service agents pressed their bodies against his. “We’ve got to move, we’ve got to move,” one pleaded.

“Wait, wait, wait, wait,” the former president instructed, his voice a harried — but startlingly clear — command. Reluctantly, they halted. He peered out into the crowd.

And then his arm reached toward the sky, and he began punching the air.

The crowd started to chant — “ U-S-A! U-S-A! ” — as the agents inched Mr. Trump toward the stairs. When they reached the top step, they paused once more, so Mr. Trump could lift his arm a little higher, and pump his fist a little faster. The crowd roared a little louder.

It’s difficult to imagine a moment that more fully epitomizes Mr. Trump’s visceral connection with his supporters, and his mastery of the modern media age.

Mr. Trump would not leave the stage without signaling to his fans that he was OK — even as some were still wailing in fear. And he did not just wave or nod, he raised his fist in defiance above his bloodied face — making an image history will not forget.

He has always been highly conscious of how he looks in big moments, practicing his Clint Eastwood squint and preparing for his mean mug-shot grimace. But there was no time to prepare for this.

This was instinct.

As the agents coaxed him onto his feet, he stammered, “Let me get my shoes on, let me get my shoes on.”

“I got you, sir, I got you, sir,” an agent replied. Mr. Trump rose, his voice uneven at first, still repeating himself: “Let me get my shoes on.”

“Hold that on your head,” an agent told him, “it’s bloody.”

“Sir, we’ve got to move to the cars,” another said.

“Let me get my shoes on,” Mr. Trump said again.

Fierce one moment, he looked drained and stricken the next.

After the agents managed to hustle him off the stage, they led him toward an idling Chevrolet Suburban. He began to clamber inside, but before the door could close, he turned back toward the crowd again. His head appeared more blood-soaked than before. He raised his fist one more time.
