Your residence hall is where you’ll make your first IU friends

You may find numerous things to bond over. Enjoying late-night pizza. Watching Outer Banks . A floor trip to Chicago. Frisbee on the quad. A propensity for procrastination. A fondness for cat videos. Whatever brings them together, many IU students form lasting relationships in the residence halls and choose to live together long after their first year.

Find the right place for you

IU’s many housing options include different room types, amenities, costs, learning communities (see below), and neighborhoods across campus. You’ll apply for housing through IU Housing after you’re admitted to IU . And once you’re admitted, consider downloading the ZeeMee app and joining the Indiana University Bloomington community to start connecting with other students—and search for the perfect roommate.

IU Bloomington rolls out housing assignments, policies to keep students safe

Housing assignments for Indiana University students who plan to live on campus are rolling out this month, but as with nearly every aspect of life during the coronavirus pandemic, living on the Bloomington campus will look very different this fall. To keep students safe, the university has made several adjustments to its housing facilities, policies and practices.

A sign that says welcome home hangs on a door handle

To limit the possible spread of the virus, dorms will be single occupancy whenever possible. Residential Programs and Services has contacted all students about their willingness to have a roommate and have made accommodations for those who wish to live alone. Overnight guests will not be allowed in on-campus housing.

In coordination with the university’s mask mandate , everyone must wear a mask while occupying shared spaces in the residence halls. Students will not be required to wear masks in their room if they live alone or if roommates agree not to do so. Though windows must remain closed for the HVAC system to work properly, enhanced air filtration systems have been installed. Plexiglass between sinks and stringent cleaning regimens have also been put in place to mitigate the spread of the disease in communal bathrooms.

While large events in residence halls will not be possible this academic year, resident assistants and other Residential Programs and Services staff will still lead students in exercises around IU’s residential curriculum . The curriculum focuses on four key areas – well-being, understanding of self and others, intellectual engagement, and civic stewardship – and is designed to educate, empower and engage residents.

These themes will be the focus of educational bulletin boards on residence hall floors, one-on-one conversations between resident assistants and residents, and larger virtual events. Residential Programs and Services staff is also working with campus partners to plan virtual movie-watching parties and trivia game nights, small-group grab-and-go activities and scavenger hunts, and other ways to build community among students living on campus.

Dining updates

The reopening of McNutt Quad, Foster Quad and Teter Quad, which had been closed or partially closed for renovations, will provide Residential Programs and Services with more flexibility to offer single-occupancy housing to students who request it. And for freshmen who do not feel safe living in a residence hall at all, IU Bloomington will waive the requirement to live on campus.

The Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel will also pivot to operate as an additional residential facility for sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students. The Biddle will implement COVID-19 safety measures to keep residents safe, offering only single-occupancy rooms with individual bathrooms.

Biddle housekeepers will enter individual resident rooms to restock toilet paper, refresh linens and vacuum weekly, but residents will be responsible for keeping their own units (including bathrooms) clean and for taking out their own trash. The Biddle housekeeping staff will vacuum, empty communal trash and recycling, and monitor cleanliness every day.

“With the university’s announced commitment to limit guests on campus, the switch from an award-winning hotel to a long-term residence facility for students shows just how committed IU is to student safety,” said Mike Campbell, associate director of the Indiana Memorial Union. “We believe this offers a unique opportunity for sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students to live in the center of campus and take advantage of all of the Indiana Memorial Union’s many dining, retail and student programming options.”

Both Residential Programs and Services and the Biddle Hotel will close on-campus student housing from Nov. 25, 2020, to Feb. 4, 2021, as the campus transitions to online-only instruction. These measures will help limit the number of people on campus during the months when the flu season compounds coronavirus concerns and issues.

A room at The Biddle Hotel

Sorority and fraternity houses are privately owned. Students or parents of students living in sorority or fraternity facilities for the upcoming fall semester should contact their organization directly to ask about their health and safety plans. In conjunction with the Monroe County Health Department, the IU Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life shared public health and CDC recommendations regarding communal living spaces with sororities, fraternities and other housed student organizations.

The majority of organizations closed their campus facilities in the spring to quickly adjust to the changes. The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life and the Dean of Students Office have been providing these organizations, who are valued campus partners, with ongoing updates as they prepare for students to return for the Fall 2020 semester. Their partnership in these efforts is critical for promoting safe environments for students. For more updates regarding initiatives in sorority and fraternity life, visit the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life’s website .

Those who plan to live in other on-campus housing should continue to check their email and monitor the Fall 2020 website for updates regarding residence halls and move-in at IU Bloomington.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, iu bloomington housing application process.

Hey everyone, I just got accepted to Indiana University Bloomington. Super excited but also a little lost about the housing application process. Anyone got any tips or can explain the process to me?

Congrats on your acceptance to Indiana University Bloomington! The housing application can seem a little daunting at first, but I assure you it's a straightforward process.

Before you start, make sure that you have your university user ID and passphrase as you'll need it to log in to the housing portal. Also, remember to have your university ID number and a valid credit card for the $200 application fee. If you don’t have this information yet, you should be receiving it from the university soon.

Alright, here's a step-by-step rundown of the process:

1. Log in to the IU housing portal. You should easily find this on the university's website.

2. Fill out your personal information where required.

3. You'll be asked to input your preferences for things like room type (single, double, triple, etc.), residence hall, and meal plans.

4. The application also includes a section for Living Learning Communities (LLCs). If you’re interested in living with a group of people who share your major, career interest, or lifestyle, look into this.

5. You’ll also be given the option of selecting a roommate. If you don't have someone in mind, no worries, you can choose to be matched with someone based on your lifestyle habits which you'll be asked about in the application.

6. After completing the application, you'll be asked to pay a $200 application fee. This is non-refundable and must be paid via credit card.

7. After your application is submitted, Housing Assignments staff will assign your space based on your preferences, the date you apply, and space availability.

Remember, the earlier you submit your application, the higher your chances of getting your preferred choices. Most housing assignments are sent out in late July or early August.

Hope this helps & best of luck with your housing application!

  • Residence Hall Contract Highlights

Assignments are made without regard to race, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin. Any request for a change in room assignment based upon these reasons will be rejected.

Room changes are possible and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Room changes are completed based on availability of space and willingness of other residents to move. In order to change rooms, residents must first complete a room change request form. Depending on the circumstances for the room change request, residents may be required to meet with a Resident Assistant or other Residence Life staff member to discuss the reason for the room change request. Part of the room change request process may include a roommate mediation a Residence Life staff member.

All room changes must be approved by the office. Any resident who changes rooms without the prior approval of the office will be in violation of the terms and conditions of the contract and may be assessed a charge for an improper room change.

Residents are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their apartment as well as reporting any maintenance issues to the office as soon as possible. This includes cleaning the apartment regularly and taking trash out to the dumpster.

Health and safety inspections will be conducted at least once per semester. Residents may sign up for a specific date and time with their Resident Assistant. The dates of these inspections will be posted at least 48 hours in advance. If a resident fails his/her initial inspection, a second inspection will be conducted. If the resident fails the second inspection, a charge may be assessed.

IU Southeast staff and their designees may enter apartments for the purpose of law enforcement, routine and emergency maintenance, safety inspections, and emergency situations.

IU Southeast Bulletin 2021-2023

Residence life and housing.

Meadow Lodge 103 Phone: (812) 941-2115 www.ius.edu/housing/   The Office of Residence Life and Housing creates living-learning environments committed to holistic student development, academic success, and civic engagement.  The department strives to provide safe, well-maintained, housing facilities that engage students in meaningful discourse and interaction while providing opportunities for personal growth and service to the community.

On-campus housing is provided through the Office of Residence Life and Housing. Approximately 400 students live on campus at IU Southeast in five lodges. Each lodge features full apartments with semi-private bathrooms, full kitchens, and common living spaces. Each lodge also features a central great room, a computer lab, free laundry facilities, mail delivery, high-tech security access, and quiet study spaces. Students live in one, two, or four-bedroom apartments. Some bedrooms are double-occupancy while others are single occupancy. Housing fees include all utilities, cable television service, and high-speed Internet and wireless access.

Acceptance to the university does not guarantee housing to any student. Students and prospective students who want to live on campus should apply as early as possible to ensure the best possible consideration for housing. Assignments are made in the order in which completed applications (application submitted and the application fee paid) are received. Students who currently live on campus are assigned first, followed by new students. Short-term housing is available to visiting students and conference guests during the summer months at competitive rates.

More information about living on campus, including the Residence Hall Application and Contract and housing rates, may be found at www.ius.edu/housing .

Class of 2026: Scheduling Guidelines for Phase 3

Medical Student Education Aug 27, 2024

Phase 2 (Class of 2026/rising Phase 3) students: We share your excitement as you begin to plan for your fourth year. It's important as you lay out that year to understand the scheduling rotation guidelines, which will ensure a smooth transition and help you make more informed decisions. Here is what you need to know:

Campus Transfers

Phase 3 students (both early decision program—EDP—and standard admission) can transfer to another campus for their fourth year if they plan to do most of their rotations there.

  • Students often transfer if they plan to do multiple electives at another campus since IUSM-provided housing is only available for one rotation at another IUSM campus (see below).

Campus Designation

A student’s campus designation in MSAS is based on where they complete most of their rotations. This designation informs housing decisions if housing is requested.

  • Students will communicate with their regional coordinator(s) and lead adviser about their home campus for the 4th year as they work with them to create their 4th year rotation schedules
  • If a student is completing a majority of their rotations at a particular campus that is different from the home campus they designated during the scheduling process, then their home campus will be updated accordingly in MSAS by the central office.

Early Clinical Rotation

Efforts will be made to assign students one career-specific clinical rotation within their first five months (e.g., Sub-I, specialty-specific elective) to obtain a Letter of Recommendation.

Indianapolis Housing Coverage

Regional campus students (EDP and standard admission) can choose one Phase 3 rotation (core rotation or elective) in Indianapolis for which housing will be provided. Flexibility in the rotation's timing may be required based on rotation availability and housing availability.

Multiple Rotations in Indianapolis

Students can choose to come to Indianapolis for more than one rotation, but housing is not provided beyond one rotation as stated above. In such cases, the student might consider transferring campuses as an option. If students want to come to Indianapolis for multiple specialty-specific rotations, they should consider moving to Indianapolis for their fourth year, as has been the practice in the past.

Specialty Specific Rotations

If regional campuses lack Sub-I or Critical Care rotations in specific specialties (e.g., Surgery, Peds, OB-GYN), students may choose to do that specialty-specific clerkship in Indianapolis or another campus that offers that rotation. Availability and scheduling flexibility apply and cannot be guaranteed for all campuses. Housing requests are not guaranteed unless the student chooses this in Indianapolis as their one rotation for which housing is provided (indicated above).

Special Track Program

Students in special track programs (e.g., Terre Haute Rural Track, Urban Medicine) should discuss career plans and program requirements with advisers and campus leaders. Home-campus designation is based on their associated special track campus. If a student must maintain a specific home campus designation, they must ensure their schedules primarily occur at that campus to keep that home campus designation (this may also impact some eligibility for certain scholarships or financial aid options).

Rotations at Other Campuses (Not Indianapolis)

Rotations at other campuses (not Indianapolis) should be worked out with the regional coordinator for that campus and are subject to rotation and/or housing availability and cannot be guaranteed.

  • If you are interested in rotating at another campus (not Indianapolis), we recommend contacting their regional clinical coordinator early (before scheduling begins) to discuss possible opportunities.

About 50% of all new residents choose to go with a random roommate assignment. If you would prefer to connect with someone before the application process, here are some tips on searching for a roommate.

Living in the dorms, no matter which residence hall, is an experience I feel every student should go through. It prepares you for the ‘real world’ while surrounding you with students going through similar experiences of your own. Jordan G.

Roommate and Community Agreements

Roommate relationships that work are characterized by honest communication, mutual respect, and shared flexibility. Your Resident Assistant (RA) will help you and your roommate(s) develop a roommate agreement that will set the norms you agree to live by. Be ready to be honest about your views on guests, housekeeping, personal property, privacy, and quiet time.

Similarly, peace and harmony on a floor happen when respect and cooperation are shared by all group members. Your RA will work with your floor members to help you set your community standards. Everyone will help decide how your community will deal with things like cleanliness, noise, safety, and vandalism.
