A STUDY ON THE STATE OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM IN NEPAL A PROJECT WORK
Related Papers
Usha Kiran Regmi
This chapter examines the trends, problems, and prospects of investigative journalism in Nepal. Semi-structured interviews conducted with 13 Nepali investigative journalists in the capital city, Kathmandu, were thematically analyzed and discussed with reference to the Muckraking Model of investigative journalism. The findings revealed that resources, professionalism, and courage and commitment are major elements that have shaped the practice of investigative journalism in Nepal. While limited resources, deadline pressure of covering standard reporting, and absence of investigative bureaus in Nepali media have fundamentally challenged the professional practice of investigative reporting, the social commitment, personal investment, and professional courage of investigative journalists have sustained its practice in Nepal. Despite these challenges, Nepali investigative journalists' frequent investigations on scandalous issues have impacted the government, politics, and society. The findings further suggest that adopting innovative cultural shifts in generating revenue, ensuring inclusive newsrooms, reinforcing the investigations into marginalized issues, and more universities including investigative journalism in their curriculum are urgent needs for the sustainable practice of investigative journalism in Nepal.

The tabloids, small sized newspapers are making contribution in the Nepalese Journalism and Mass Communication sector. Their contribution should be weighted and properly judged by the practitioners of this field and should provide them a vivid pathway to go further. This work as Master Degree Dissertation solely focuses to the tabloids with this concern. It is general supposition that there are no proper researches have been conducted about the tabloids' approaches, inputs and overall contributions up to the date. Considering the mass communications ultimate impact to the society and tabloids' orientation to make countable initiatives for the betterment of under-developed communities through it, this work recommends them to seek a new way to address people's livelihood instead to the power-centered political issues only. Therefore, here in this study, our main concern is to find out the effectiveness of their role in the Mass Communication field. Nepalese print media history lasts slightly over one hundred years. From the beginning of Nepalese print media history, there were many exercises for political interest. Newspapers were used as political weapon for a new change or to protect the old one. Post period of Rana Regime, newspaper practitioners were working for democracy establishment in Nepal from India territory. It could happen in 1951, then the media practice could be open in the Kingdom, but capital centered. Dozens of newspapers sprout in ten years period of first democratic experience (1951-61), but they suffered the Panchayat authorities bans and seizures. The crawling approaches of mission journalism become the main stream during the Panchayat party-less political system up to 1990. It was the political mission of the press from two opposite edges to save and to root-out the Panchayat system. The people's movement of 1990, succeed with democracy restoration and the press again accesses a golden constitutional rights and legal guarantees. Consequently, hundreds of reposed newspaper restored their publications and other hundreds of new began. But over politicizations on the content and new professional arrival of broadsheet daily with a huge investment become readers' detachment to the tabloids. Even though the tabloids have their own dignity and importance to the public media, they again can prevail their performance by the rural approach, that is the conclusion of this work, the author convinced. Initially, the dissertation focuses to dig out the origin and historical background of the tabloid and seeks to grasp its trends in the modern ages. It tries to see the meaning and nature of the tabloids. It shifts further narrowing the subject down their historical and present trends, status and performances and the usage in the context of Nepal. Then it emphatically, moves towards searching their contents, coverage and circulations. Again repeatedly, it suggests them to be serious on the matter of public concern communication, rural approach, and contribute through mass communication insisting to the urbanization and the development agendas.
This paper explores the impact of Foreign Funded Media Projects working in Nepal. BBC Media Actinon's project, IMS's peoject, and EFS projects in Nepal have been examined using case study method of qualitative research.

More than four decades of Journalism practice in Bangladesh has documented enormous number of investigative reports and last three decades have seen several competitions and prizes which encouraged investigative reporting in the country. Research question of how investigative journalism is contributing to the democratic process along with other aspects of development has been explored. The social responsibility by doing investigative reporting has also been investigated. Extensive literature survey has been conducted to gauge and analyze critically the historical as well as contemporary situation of investigative journalism in the country. The study conducted an opinion survey among the journalists to understand their present perception on investigative journalism as well as the practice in the profession exposing corruption and other anomalies. Review of recent studies and research so far conducted on investigative journalism has shown a potential contribution to strengthen democratic process and social responsibility aspect of the press. How investigative reporting may contribute to combat social injustice and establish rule of law in the country has been studied. Exposing corruption in local and national levels; irregularities and unlawful activities; and corruption in service providing sectors - both government and nongovernment organizations - have been found analyzing the contents of investigative reports published in different print medium. Some of the private television channels in Bangladesh, are taking challenging stories in special programmes on exposing corruption of service sectors of both government and nongovernment set-ups. A decade long civil war ended with a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2006. To address the political developments, the Interim Constitution was promulgated in 2007. Though the Interim Constitution of Nepal 2007 guarantees press freedom, every year various incidents of press freedom violation are recorded by various national and international organizations. This article evaluates the situation of press freedom in Nepal since the signing of CPA 2006 by analyzing all the incidents of press freedom violation from 2007 to 2014 as recorded by International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The analysis of those events shows lack of sufficient evidence and information to justify them as the press freedom violation. No matter where and how the journalist or media owner is killed, threatened or harmed physically, it is termed as press freedom violation. The situation of Press freedom after peace agreement in 2006 is not that critical as projected in various reports and there is no gover...
