How to build a great resume

Write your name and contact information.

Recruiters and hiring managers will need your personal data to get in touch for an interview. Include your full name, city and state, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile URL at the top of your resume.

Create your resume summary

Your resume is arguably the most valuable piece of paper for your career. But this document can be daunting for many. Maybe you’re not sure how to fit in all your information onto one page. Maybe you’re not sure about the right way to format and write your resume. Maybe you don’t even know what the heck a resume is!

What Are Some Examples of a Good Resume?

A resume is a summary of your career, whether yours is just getting started or has been going on for years. Coming in at around one page in length (two only under specific circumstances), it showcases the jobs you’ve held and currently hold, the responsibilities you’ve taken on, the skills you’ve developed, and the qualities you bring to the table as an employee. Together, those things make it super easy for any hiring manager to see your qualifications and fit for a role.

For all the work you may put into writing one, hiring managers actually spend very little time—mere seconds in many cases—looking at your resume. But despite this sad fact, it’s safe to say that creating a great resume (rather than hastily throwing one together) still matters.

“If you miss the mark, your resume may never be read. Even worse, you might be removed from the applicant pool by a computer before a human even knows you exist,” says Muse career coach Heather Yurovsky , founder of Shatter & Shine. So you want to get it right because, as she explains, isn’t the goal to “spend less time looking for a job and more time in a role you love?”

You might be wondering if you can lean on your LinkedIn profile instead of writing a resume. The answer, sadly, is no. Most hiring managers still expect you to submit a resume, even if they also look at your LinkedIn. Even if you don’t need a resume for a job you’re applying for now, you’re going to need one at some point in your career—they’re not anywhere close to going out of style. So it’s best to always have one at the ready should an opportunity pop up.

And although LinkedIn has plenty of benefits, a resume has one clear advantage: While your LinkedIn is usually a broader picture of your career trajectory, your resume gives you the opportunity to tailor your career story to a specific role or company (more on that later).

Oh, and you’ve probably heard of something called a CV? It’s slightly different from a resume , and usually more common with academics and job seekers outside the U.S.

Hiring managers look for three things on your resume, “What did you do? Why did you do it? And what was the result?” says Muse career coach Martin McGovern , owner of Career Therapy. “If you can answer all three of these questions in...your resume bullet points, you’re going to be on the right track.”

Clear, easy-to-understand language is key. “The truth is that most resumes make no sense. They are stuffed with jargon, they are too technical, and they are filled with redundancies. Try to read a resume that isn’t yours and you will quickly realize that it feels like an alien wrote it,” McGovern adds. Put yourself in the shoes of a recruiter who has no idea how your role works—how can you make your resume accessible to them?

The hiring manager also cares about more than just you and you alone—they care about you in relation to them. “Hiring managers want to see if a candidate matches the requirements” of the role they’re hiring for, Yurovsky explains. “Your resume should paint this picture so the hiring manager not only knows what day-to-day responsibilities you can handle, but why you, above other[s], bring value to their organization.”

How Do You Write a Resume?

Whether you’re someone who’s never written a resume in your life, or you need a nice, thorough refresher on the process of creating one, follow these steps to go from a blank page to a complete—and dare I say beautiful—document.

1. Pick Your Format

Before you start typing one single thing, you have to decide what you want the overall resume to look like.

Resume builders can be helpful for this step—they’ll take all your basic information and organize it for you, eliminating some of the legwork. You can also use a pre-made outline, such as one of these free Google Docs templates .

But it’s often safest to start with a clean slate all on your own and eventually upgrade to a more advanced layout. This allows you to course correct, edit and re-edit, and choose a resume format that best fits your particular situation (after all, not everyone has a career trajectory that’s easy to compartmentalize).

In general, you’re most likely to cover and/or include sections on the following:

  • Your work experience
  • Your non-work experience, including professional organizations, community involvement, or side projects
  • Your education and certifications
  • Your skills (specifically hard skills) and interests

So how do you format and organize all of that information?

By far the most common (and safest, if you’re not sure which route to take) option is reverse chronological order . This means you organize your experiences from most recent to least recent. So your work experiences would go above your education, and your current role would go above previous roles you’ve held. This of course has its exceptions—maybe you went back to grad school between jobs, or your most recent role is irrelevant to the job you’re applying for. So the whole page may not be exactly in reverse chronological order depending on your situation. It’s just a guideline.

There’s also something called a functional or skills-based resume . This is used pretty rarely, mainly with career changers and those with limited or complicated work histories. It gets its name because it’s primarily about listing your skills rather than experiences, and showcases them above your work history and education.

You can also opt for a combination resume , which is a mix between a reverse chronological resume and skills-based resume. It highlights your skills at the top, but allows just as much room below to cover your job and school experience.

Use caution when choosing these two formats: “Combo and skills-based [resumes] can be hard to follow, because [they force] the reader to hunt for connections between your skills and experience, and [don’t] provide the full context of your work,” says Muse Career Coach Angela Smith , founder of Loft Consulting. “I’ve also heard a lot of recruiters say that they automatically discount skill-based resumes because they feel the candidate is trying to hide something. I don’t necessarily believe that, but I think it’s important for job-seekers to know that perception is out there.”

2. Start With Your Basic Information

Your contact information should always go at the top of your resume. In this header you’ll want to include anything that could be helpful for a recruiter to get in touch with you. Usually, this means adding in:

  • Your full name (preferably the name you use across the web)
  • Your phone number
  • Your personal email address

You might also choose to include other basic information, such as your LinkedIn or personal website URL, your GitHub (for technical roles), your social media profiles (if relevant to the job), or your address. If you’re looking to move for a job, you may choose to leave out your address or write “open to relocating” to better your chances of getting an interview.

The key is to make this part as clear as possible. If a hiring manager can’t reach you, there’s no point in perfecting the rest of your resume.

3. Add in Your Work Experience

This section will most likely be the bulk of your resume. Even if you’re changing careers, employers still want to see where you’ve worked, what you’ve done, and the impact of that work to get a sense of your background and expertise.

Your “Work Experience” might be one entire category, or you might choose to break it up into “Relevant Experience” and “Additional Experience” to highlight the jobs that are most important for hiring managers to focus on. Either way, you’ll almost always want to have your most recent experience at the top and your older experience down below.

Within your work experience, you’ll want to include each official job title, the company (and possibly its location), and the years you worked there. Below that, you’ll add in two to four bullet points explaining what you did in that job, the skills you built and exercised, the tools you used, and the results of what you did. If you accomplished a lot during your time there, focus on the responsibilities that made the most impact or you’re the most proud of, as well as the ones that best align you with the job you’re applying for (more on that in the following sections). It’s key here to list, if relevant, quantitative as well as qualitative accomplishments.

For example, you might write:

Associate Accountant, Finances and Co., Ann Arbor, MI September 2017 – Present

  • Manage billing and invoicing for more than 50 clients, ensuring the deadlines and needs of our enterprise partners, including Big Company and Super Star Org, are met
  • Collaborate closely with sales, account management, and project management teams on project setup, maintenance, and invoice management
  • Assist in the streamlining of invoicing guidelines and procedures through documentation and the implementation of new software, resulting in an average two-week decrease in total time spent per client

Your resume bullets should be in past tense if you’re referring to past jobs and present tense if you’re talking about your current roles. In addition, your bullets should always start with a strong action verb that best describes what you did. And if you have examples of your work, consider hyperlinking them here as well.

If you have a ton of experience and this category is starting to run long (read: over one page), consider kicking out your oldest jobs unless they’re super relevant to the job you’re applying for, or extra impressive for your field.

From there, she explains, you can start to whittle down what is and isn’t important. And you can refer to this document later if you ever decide to update your resume for a specific role.

4. Consider Including Volunteer Work or Other Experience

In most cases, show both your master’s and bachelor’s degrees on your resume. Although hiring managers will likely assume you’ve earned a bachelor’s, failing to cite this degree could hinder your resume during the initial ATS scan. As previously mentioned, order your degrees from newest to oldest. You can also leave off additional academic achievements unless you lack relevant work experience to feature on your resume.

Should my degree be at the top of my resume? -

Not usually. As a general rule, order your resume sections by relevance. For most job seekers, that means putting the work experience section first and education second. But you may opt to reverse this order if, say, you just graduated, and your degree program speaks strongly to your target job.

How do I list an unfinished college degree? -

Although you may be tempted to leave your college experience off your resume if you didn’t finish your degree, it is helpful to include. Having some higher-level education is better than none, and may help you avoid being rejected by ATS if the company scans for a particular word or term like “bachelor's degree.” Write "Coursework toward" before the degree name, and list the dates you attended and the number of credits you earned so you don’t give the wrong impression that you graduated.

If you’re still completing the degree in question, put "Candidate" in front of the title, as in Candidate: Bachelor of Science (BS).

Educational background and achievements

What are your financial resources to pay for one, or should you explore services offered from your alma mater or current institution if you are a current or graduate of higher education?,” she questioned.

You’ll also want to consider the resume services’ reputation, Conklin suggested: Are there reviews or endorsements of a service, especially if you are paying for one? What is the background, and is the resume service aligned with your industry of interest? 

Is it worth paying for a resume service?

“It depends on the service and one’s circumstances as to whether it is ‘worth’ paying for the service,” Conklin said. “There are very reputable services out there, especially for more experienced career seekers. If you’re transitioning to a new field, or you are seeking to move to a senior or executive level, it could definitely be worth the cost.”

As a preliminary step, Conklin advised to really make sure you are an informed consumer when considering a resume service, and if you should pay or if you have a network or connections you can leverage for advice first. 

How much does it cost to have someone write your resume?

“When an individual pays for a resume service, there may be a flat rate, or it is calculated on an hourly rate and requires at least two sessions,” Conklin explained. “For example, it could cost $150 for a single session.”

However, there are resume services that can significantly exceed that rate and are part of a package that might include a quick return and other support, from LinkedIn to interview coaching, that is over $600, she highlights.

What to include on your resume, according to an expert

“Your story is the focus of your resume, and it is critical to be honest and reflect on how you want to tell that, ultimately,” Conklin noted. “The order also depends on the stage of your career (early, mid, senior, executive) and the industry you are seeking.”

In academia, for example, you’ll see a curriculum vitae (CV) that is pages long to reflect one’s research, publications, and roles held. In financial services, you would have a one-page resume until you have significant work experience. Or, in the creative fields, you may have a one-page resume and then an online portfolio or website that exhibits your work to complement your resume, she explains.

“No matter the field you are pursuing, you always want to make sure you list your experiences in reverse chronological order, you include your education/training, think of the keywords and skills (and make sure those are prominently displayed and included), and also think of what is most relevant,” she listed. “The most relevant should be at the top.”

It is also key to consider Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), automated review systems that scan resumes as part of an organization’s vetting process. “The format could align or cause issues with an ATS system,” Conklin added. “This is why it’s important to do your research, leverage any connections you have to gain insights into a field and their preferred format and get advice on keywords, skills and experiences to include.”

“If you do your homework, you should find clues to answer the questions above and guide your resume writing approach,” Conklin shared.

Calgary storm forces flight delays, cancellations: What Vancouver travellers need to know

Numerous flights were disrupted due to a potent storm in Calgary on Monday, Aug. 5.

Calgary International Airport (YYC) says flights are operational following significant water damage to parts of its terminal building at B and C gates.

"While these areas remain closed, we've shifted operations to other gates," the airport stated on X/Twitter.

Dozens of WestJet flights were cancelled or delayed due to the heavy rain and hail. The airport is the airline's hub, resulting in issues across its network. 

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of south-central Alberta late Monday night.

The weather agency had warned of powerful wind gusts, baseball-sized hail and torrential rain.

Travellers departing from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) should check the status of their flights regardless of what airline they are flying with. Flights heading to other airports, particularly domestically, may also be impacted by the Calgary delays even if they do not stop at YYC. 

YYC shows cancelled flights in red on its departures and arrivals sections on its website.

WestJet is currently the only airline cancelling flights but other airlines may experience delays in and out of YYC.

Travellers on airlines servicing YYC may wish to take note of what to do in case Monday's storm has impacted their travel plans.

WestJet flights

WestJet will offer assistance to all air passengers travelling to or from the YYC airport between Aug. 5 to Aug. 8.  

A $0 one-time fee waiver will be offered for changes or cancellations.   

If travellers change their destination, the difference in fare applies.  Any residual funds are refunded.

If travellers change to a different cabin, the difference in fare applies. Any residual funds are refunded.

Travel must be completed within 60 days of the original departure date.

If travellers cancel their bookings, the funds will be refunded or credited based on the fare class booked; Basic will receive travel credit.

If travellers cancel their bookings, any portion paid with WestJet dollars, Travel Bank credit or a WestJet rewards companion voucher will be returned to their account and the original expiration date (if applicable) will apply.

If travellers cancel their bookings, any portion paid with WestJet dollars or a WestJet rewards companion voucher that has expired or is expiring within 60 days will be reinstated with a new expiry date 60 days from the date of reinstatement.  

Any portion paid with WestJet dollars or Travel Bank credit will be returned to a traveller's account and the original expiration date (if applicable) will apply.    

Change or cancellation must be requested more than 2 hours before departure.     

Travellers with WestJet Vacations packages departing on the same days will also receive help. 

If travellers change their bookings, the difference in package price applies and is subject to availability.   

If travellers cancel their bookings, the funds will be returned as WestJet dollars with a one-year expiry date, less any hotel penalties. 

Travellers should check their WestJet flight status before heading to the airport.

Air Canada flights

Air Canada has revised its ticketing policy to make it easier for customers travelling on an affected flight to make changes to their booking without penalty, space permitting.

Travellers with affected flights can  retrieve their bookings  to change their flights free of charge. If they purchased their tickets with  Air Canada Vacations , please contact them directly at 1-800-296-3408.

Air Canada also recommends travellers check their Flight Status  or call Air Canada's automated flight information system at 1-888-422-7533 before heading to the airport.

More information on Air Canada's  re-booking policies for anticipated flight delays and cancellations  is available online. Air Canada is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as the situation evolves. 

Flair Airlines 

Flair Airlines hasn't posted any waivers on its website for travellers affected by the storm but advises that flights may be affected. 

Flair passengers should allow for extra time before their flights and check their flight status before coming to the airport.

Tropical Storm Debby forces area schools to close

Bryan County Schools announced Sunday afternoon that their doors will be closed Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 as local officials prepare for Tropical Storm Debby . School officials will determine whether to reopen by 1 p.m. Aug. 6. Classes at Savannah Technical College will be cancelled Aug. 5 and Aug 6. The campus will also remain closed on those days. 

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools announced Sunday it will operate a half-day Monday. School will remain closed Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. Remote learning will not be required.

Dismissal times in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools are:

11:30 a.m. - High School, Mercer Middle School, Godley K-8/Wings ES/Building Bridges Middle School and the Learning Academy at Jenkins

11:40 a.m. - Middle Schools, Building Bridges High School and Wings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has decided on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate in her bid for the White House. The 60-year-old Democrat and military veteran rose to the forefront with a series of plain-spoken television appearances in the days after President Joe Biden decided not to seek a second term. He has made his state a bastion of liberal policy and, this year, one of the few states to protect fans buying tickets online for Taylor Swift concerts and other live events.

Some things to know about Walz:

Walz comes from rural America

It would be hard to find a more vivid representative of the American heartland than Walz. Born in West Point, Nebraska, a community of about 3,500 people northwest of Omaha, Walz joined the Army National Guard and became a teacher in Nebraska.

He and his wife moved to Mankato in southern Minnesota in the 1990s. That’s where he taught social studies and coached football at Mankato West High School, including for the 1999 team that won the first of the school’s four state championships. He still points to his union membership there.

Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard, rising to command sergeant major, one of the highest enlisted ranks in the military, although he didn’t complete all the training before he retired so his rank for benefits purposes was set at master sergeant.

He has a proven ability to connect with conservative voters

In his first race for Congress, Walz upset a Republican incumbent. That was in 2006, when he won in a largely rural, southern Minnesota congressional district against six-term Rep. Gil Gutknecht. Walz capitalized on voter anger with then-President George W. Bush and the Iraq war.

During six terms in the U.S. House, Walz championed veterans’ issues.

He’s also shown a down-to-earth side, partly through social media video posts with his daughter, Hope. One last fall showed them trying a Minnesota State Fair ride, “The Slingshot,” after they bantered about fair food and her being a vegetarian.

He could help the ticket in key Midwestern states

While Walz isn’t from one of the crucial “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where both sides believe they need to win, he’s right next door. He also could ensure that Minnesota stays in the hands of Democrats.

That’s important because former President Donald Trump has portrayed Minnesota as being in play this year, even though the state hasn’t elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006. A GOP presidential candidate hasn’t carried the state since President Richard Nixon’s landslide in 1972, but Trump has already campaigned there .

When Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton decided not to seek a third term in 2018, Walz campaigned and won the office on a “One Minnesota” theme.

Walz also speaks comfortably about issues that matter to voters in the Rust Belt. He’s been a champion of Democratic causes, including union organizing, workers’ rights and a $15-an-hour minimum wage.

He has experience with divided government

In his first term as governor, Walz faced a Legislature split between a Democratic-led House and a Republican-controlled Senate that resisted his proposals to use higher taxes to boost money for schools, health care and roads. But he and lawmakers brokered compromises that made the state’s divided government still seem productive.

Bipartisan cooperation became tougher during his second year as he used the governor’s emergency power during the COVID-19 pandemic to shutter businesses and close schools. Republicans pushed back and forced out some agency heads. Republicans also remain critical of Walz over what they see as his slow response to sometimes violent unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.

Things got easier for Walz in his second term, after he defeated Republican Scott Jensen , a physician known nationally as a vaccine skeptic. Democrats gained control of both legislative chambers, clearing the way for a more liberal course in state government, aided by a huge budget surplus.

Walz and lawmakers eliminated nearly all of the state abortion restrictions enacted in the past by Republicans, protected gender-affirming care for transgender youth and legalized the recreational use of marijuana.

Rejecting Republican pleas that the state budget surplus be used to cut taxes, Democrats funded free school meals for children, free tuition at public colleges for students in families earning under $80,000 a year, a paid family and medical leave program and health insurance coverage regardless of a person’s immigration status.

He has an ear for sound-bite politics

Walz called Republican nominee Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance “just weird” in an MSNBC interview last month and the Democratic Governors Association — which Walz chairs — amplified the point in a post on X . Walz later reiterated the characterization on CNN, citing Trump’s repeated mentions of the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter from the film “Silence of the Lambs” in stump speeches.

The word quickly morphed into a theme for Harris and other Democrats and has a chance to be a watchword of the undoubtedly weird 2024 election.

Damar Hamlin says his ‘mind is free’ a year after resuming football following near-death experience

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Damar Hamlin flashed a wide grin and waved hello while zipping by on a scooter, before accelerating to make a sharp, effortless turn up a hill toward the Buffalo Bills dorm rooms at their training camp facility.

Carefree and happy, there seems to be little the Bills safety has to be afraid of a year removed from the trepidations Hamlin experienced in making his return to football following a near-death experience.

“My mind is free. My spirit is free. My soul is free,” Hamlin told The Associated Press on Sunday. “I’m able to think clearly. I’m not hindered by second thoughts of what could maybe happen again.”

Hamlin is, of course, referring to the terrifying moment when he went into cardiac arrest after making what appeared to be a routine tackle during a game at Cincinnati on Jan. 2, 2023. He needed to be resuscitated on the field and was transported to a hospital, where he spent two days in a medically induced coma before finally being awakened while surrounded by his family.

Doctors diagnosed the cause of Hamlin’s heart stopping as a result of commotio cordis, which happens when a direct blow at a specific point in a heartbeat causes cardiac arrest.

Though Hamlin was assured by specialists the chances of a recurrence are slim, he acknowledged how beneficial it was going through each cautious step in his comeback — first practice, first tackle, first game — in helping regain his confidence. The passage of time also helped provide Hamlin the perspective he needed to, as he put it, “grow and let go of the past.”

“Time heals all. That’s everything, you know, relationships, life, growth from cardiac arrest,” Hamlin said. “It’s trauma. It’s time that heals all if you allow it to.”

Less encumbered by the past, Hamlin now places his emphasis on the future and focus on the familiar challenge of competing for a roster spot — something he’s experienced ever since the Bills selected the University of Pittsburgh product in the sixth round of the 2021 draft .

Though his three seasons of being in the Bills system helps, nothing has been assured Hamlin even with both starting spots open following Jordan Poyer’s departure in free agency and Micah Hyde still unsigned and contemplating retirement.

Taylor Rapp has been tagged to fill one of the starting jobs, leaving Hamlin competing with offseason free-agent addition Mike Edwards and rookie second-round pick Cole Bishop for the other spot. The competition has been complicated further with Buffalo recently adding veteran free agents Kareem Jackson and Terrell Burgess to compensate for injuries to Edwards (hamstring) and Bishop (shoulder).

Hamlin has taken nothing for granted since arriving for spring practices.

“He came back hungry,” general manager Brandon Beane said. “His focus is like, ‘I want to go win a job. I want to show I can prove that I can start and make plays.′ And so that’s been his focus, you know, ‘Micah and Jordan are gone. There’s new faces around. And don’t forget about me. I can still do it.’”

Coach Sean McDermott credited Hamlin for practicing at a consistent high level in June. And little has changed in his evaluation since training camp opened two weeks ago.

“It’s fun watching him have fun out there,” McDermott said last week. “And you can tell he means business.”

Hamlin appeared in just five games last season, in part because the Bills were easing him back in , and with Rapp signed to take over the No. 3 safety spot. Hamlin enjoyed his most playing time in 2022 by starting 13 games, filling in for Hyde who was sidelined by a neck injury.

Hamlin’s preparedness and expectations haven’t changed.

“If you go back to the day I got drafted, this article that I did, I told (the writer), ‘I don’t care if I got to carry water for this team. I just want to do whatever it takes to win,’” Hamlin said. “I trust myself. I know what I can do. I have faith in my journey. And I still know my best football is ahead of me.”

He then reflected on something he read the previous night.

“Someone was talking about letting go of what was, to become what is,” he said. “That’s a big part of my mental process as far as progressing into this season.”

Whatever reminders that linger are positive ones.

A tent at training camp offers CPR training for fans, something Hamlin began championing last year. His influence stretches further, with Ohio recently passing a law requiring automatic external defibrillators in nearly every school or sports and recreation venue.

“I’m on a mission to get all 50 states to pass that bill as well, and I won’t stop until I do,” Hamlin said. “In the same way that I’m chasing my goals on the field, that’s me chasing my goals off the field and always prioritizing my blessings of still having a life. Still being here.”
