At most universities, Literature study is divided across multiple departments and programs. At the Bass School, creative writers, literary translators, and literature scholars come together in a single program dedicated to transnational and interdisciplinary scholarship and practice.

With most upper-level seminars and workshops limited to 15 students, undergraduates in the BA in Literature work closely with award-winning teachers, scholars, creative writers, and literary translators. Literature majors can pursue Creative Writing, Spanish, and Professional and Technical Writing concentrations. MA and PhD students in Literature can apply to receive graduate certificates in Creative Writing and/or Literary Translation.

Language study is open to all majors at UT Dallas. The Bass School offers instruction by outstanding faculty at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

To obtain specific information about classes at The University of Texas at Dallas, visit the UT Dallas Coursebook, or for more general information, the UT Dallas Catalog.

The Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology offers language instruction at beginning, intermediate and/or advanced study in languages in the following areas:

  • Additional Language Courses
  • Language Placement

All students who wish to enroll in classes must take an online language placement assessment.

We also offer courses in a wide range of cultures and history. Language courses are offered as faculty availability and student demand allow.

Students who complete the BA in Literature receive a thorough grounding in literary ideas and methods, competence in particular national literatures, and the ability to work across literatures and languages. Via selecting a variety of courses, students are able to combine courses in criticism and interpretation, in writing and translation, and in English and foreign languages.

At UT Dallas, the study of literature is not divided across departments of English, Spanish, French, German, and East Asian literature; instead, the study of literature takes place in a single program that encompasses not only English literature but also the literatures of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Creative writing and literary translation are integral parts of the Graduate Program in Literature at UT Dallas, and one of the core values of the program is that the dialogue between creative and critical practitioners is essential.

The MA in Literature brings together literary scholars, theorists, creative writers, and literary translators who share a commitment to literary study and practice. The program provides students with a rigorous foundation in the discipline of literary studies and a broad understanding of global literary traditions, critical approaches, and theoretical debates. Students have the opportunity to participate in workshops in creative writing and literary translation, as well as seminars in a wide range of other disciplines, such as film studies, the history of ideas, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts. Students in the master’s program elect either a professional option (coursework only) or a research option (coursework plus research portfolio). Students who are primarily interested in creative writing or literary translation have the option to apply to receive graduate certificates in those areas.

The PhD in Literature provides students with a flexible context in which to pursue research and further their study of literary traditions, critical approaches and theoretical debates. Students pursuing a PhD in Literature may, if their coursework supports it, submit a translation or creative writing project as part of their dissertation.

Chinese Tea Ceremony and Calligraphy Workshop 03-08-23

The expertise of our award-winning faculty covers the spectrum of literature, languages and translation studies, providing multiple perspectives in courses covering a wide range of topics.

Six centers and institutes affiliated with the Bass School promote interdisciplinary research:

  • The Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies
  • The Center for Asian Studies
  • The Center for Translation Studies
  • The Center for U.S.-Latin-America Initiatives
  • The Center for Values in Medicine, Science and Technology
  • The Edith O-Donnell Institute of Art History

UT Dallas is home to the Alpha Psi Nu chapter of  Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society .

Dr. Theresa Towner

Ashbel Smith Professor of Literary Studies

“I tend to do two types of teaching: One is with texts that students know are very difficult, inaccessible and complicated — ones they’re afraid to tackle. And the other is the kind of texts that students think they know really, really well, but then they are surprised that they can learn so much more.”

Welcome Families!

My name is Katharine Hsu. I'm a former teacher with a Masters in Education. I've created a learning space where all children can feel happy and confident. We support and celebrate kids with ADHD, dyslexia, HFA, 2E, G/T and anxiety. Our teaching approach creates safety and results for kids who haven't yet discovered their brilliance.

We see ourselves as part of your village. Let's work together!

What We Focus on

Phonics & spelling.

Lessons include explicit phonics instruction with tailored multisensory activities, art, and games. We adjust to kids' executive functioning needs and build confidence skills at the same time.

Written Expression

We teach writing as a form of play and use an artistic process. Kids generate their own book topics and through this affirming experience, they strive to become published authors!

Instead of criticism, we use praise to improve academic skills. Every lesson always includes positive self-talk, academic-specific compliments, and words of affirmation.

School Outreach

The Young Writers Program offers creative writing workshops in public and private schools as well as juvenile residential treatment centers throughout the Denver metro area. Led by working, published writers with a passion for sharing their craft, our outreach workshops provide access to our innovative creative writing programming for young people who cannot come to Lighthouse.

The Young Authors Collective, or YAC, is a group of talented, word-obsessed high school writers dedicated to experimenting with new creative forms, collaborating with other arts organizations, and writing a ton. We meet once a week at Lighthouse to generate new pieces, give friendly feedback, and work towards publication.

Support Young Writers

Our Future Scribes Depend on Your Support. Nearly all of the workshops and projects that will engage 2,300 students this year are free to attend, and for the sessions that do have tuition, such as summer writing camp, financial aid is available for any student who needs it. We want all young people who want to write to be able to do so and for them to be nurtured by the best instructors and mentors available. This only happens with the support of generous donors like you.

School of Arts and Humanities

Literature with creative writing concentration (ba).

Students who complete the major in Literature receive a thorough grounding in literary ideas and methods, competence in particular national literatures, as well as the ability to work across literatures and languages. By engaging literary texts appropriate to one of the country's most diverse campuses, this major teaches both specialized knowledge and the skills to deepen and broaden knowledge of literature that is new or unfamiliar. The ideal graduate would be able to approach an English-language text from anywhere in the world with a set of intelligent questions and the capacity to produce equally intelligent answers to interpretative problems. By selecting a variety of courses from a variety of headings, students are able to combine courses in criticism and interpretation, in writing and translation, and in English and foreign languages. Students may also be certified to teach.

Since the following catalog course descriptions are very general, students are urged to consult the detailed course descriptions available on the web site for the School of Arts and Humanities. At least one-half of the semester credit hours for a major must be taken at UT Dallas.

Unless otherwise noted, courses in Literature are open to all students in the University.
