When Tiffany Hwu was thinking about where she wanted to pursue her graduate degree in psychology, UC Irvine was at the top of her list.

"What stood out about UCI and the Department of Cognitive Sciences was how supportive they are of students," she says. "The department has a high retention rate and that's a really good sign they take good care of their students. And after being here for a few years, I can tell you it's true - they do."

among all public psychology programs in the country ( ), the University of California, Irvine graduate program administered by the cognitive sciences department offers students .

Scholars in the department - like Tiffany - have a proven track record of earning competitive research funding from national agencies - including the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health - and from campus-level fellowships.

This past year, UCI cognitive scientists brought in $2.7 million in external grant funding.

Faculty in the department publish regularly in the field's top academic journals, and graduate students have incredible opportunities to publish alongside them.

The cognitive sciences department at UCI uses a combination of innovative approaches with modern tools to study fundamental human abilities including attention, memory, language, decision making, and problem solving.

Graduate research specialties include:

Students work together with who are highly experienced in the use of leading technologies such as EEG, fMRI, and robotics, and of modern research tools such as computational methods, big data, and Bayesian statistics. And, students have an opportunity to earn a master's degree while in pursuit of their Ph.D.

"There's really something here for everyone," says Tiffany. "The department is extremely multidisciplinary, including researchers from engineering to those more interested in the behavioral and perceptual part of cognition. Students who are interested in any of these can mix and match because there are leading researchers in each of these areas, all in one place."

And if that wasn't enough, the 1,500 acre UCI campus - full of endless running, hiking and biking trails - is located less than , is the university committed to economic diversity and upward mobility ( , and the ranked public university in the U.S.( .

Graduate students from UCI's cognitive sciences program have gone on to work in high-tech and research consultancy companies; government, science, and technology labs; and in professorial posts around the world. A quick sampling of recent placements include:

Discipline is 14th among public universities

The University of California, Irvine has been ranked 14th (up from 19th) for the best psychology program among the nation’s public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual graduate school rankings.

“We are delighted, but hardly surprised, to see the ranking for psychology at UCI continue to climb,” Dean Jon Gould said. “Their peers nationwide recognize the groundbreaking research our faculty are pursuing, and with the addition of the new clinical Ph.D. program, the Department of Psychological Science will continue to soar. We’re now a top-15 program among public universities, and we expect to be in the top 10 in the years ahead.”

Psychology, ranked 30th (up from 36th) over all universities nationwide, is administered by the Department of Psychological Science in the School of Social Ecology and the Department of Cognitive Sciences in the School of Social Sciences.

“We are excited that our increased research productivity, strong undergraduate and graduate programs, and excellent students are being recognized,” said Susan Charles, chair of psychological science.  “We are producing research that addresses some of the most fundamental issues in society, and our students and faculty are among the best in the field.”

The school has 1,276 undergrads, majoring in psychological science, 80 doctoral students and eight post doctoral scholars in psychological science this quarter.

The department includes 36 faculty members, including prominent scholars who are experts on child development, memory, trauma and aging, among other topics. Their specialties include everything from developmental, social, personality, health, psychology and law, biological, clinical, cultural, community, environmental, and ecological psychology. The faculty are united by an overarching interest in understanding the origins of human behavior as it develops across the life course and in diverse sociocultural contexts. They also share a strong commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and to research that has the potential for application to important societal problems.

The degree programs include:

  • Undergraduate Program
  • Ph.D. Program
  • Master of Legal and Forensic Psychology

Honors Program in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences

The Honors Program in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences is an advanced educational and research program for outstanding undergraduate students in these two majors.

The program emphasizes advanced competence in scientific research, and allows participants the opportunity to pursue advanced work in independent research, in addition to earning honors upon graduation. While the program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate study or seeking challenging research experiences as a capstone to their undergraduate experience, all Psychology and Cognitive Sciences majors who meet the minimum eligibility requirements are welcome to apply.

The program has a limited number of openings and seeks to attract outstanding students who plan to undertake postgraduate education in some field of cognitive/psychological sciences.

Students with junior standing are required to identify a faculty advisor and a research project, and submit a formal application in spring quarter prior to the start of the senior year. To qualify for the honors program, the students must meet the GPA requirement (3.2 within their major), provide an analytical writing sample, and submit a one-page research plan. In addition, a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor who agrees to oversee the proposed research must be provided.
