My worst nightmare occurred when I was in high school. I was trying to get used to watching horror movies. I knew my weakness and I had never tried to watch such movies alone without the company of friends. On this day, I was home alone so I decided to watch a movie about vampires. Watching the vampires scared me and I could not sleep easily. I stayed in bed just wondering if vampires really existed. After a short time of meditation I got tired, my eyes were heavy with sleep and I dozed off. No sooner had I started sleeping than I started having a horrible nightmare that everyone in my neighborhood had turned into a vampire. My family members were never affected and we were the only human beings in the area. In my dream, it occurred to me that the other vampires had realized that there were people around. This meant that we would act as their source of food on that day, and it also meant that after being bitten we would be turned into vampires. In the dream, I saw myself waking up to peep through the window to see if they were really coming for us. I was not the only who heard roars. My parents and my brother were already awake thinking of a way that they could use to prevent the vampires from attacking us. At this point, I was already sweating and my heart was beating fast. I gave up and woke up I searched for my phone and called my brother so I could explain to him, maybe I would have gotten comfort. It is normally said that what a person dreams is normally in their thoughts. Now the vampires were getting closer, at this point we had to think of ways that would keep them from reaching our house. My parents suggested will light a fire because they feared light. However, it was too late. Some of them had already reached the door and were already pushing. The windows had already been broken and they were trying so hard to get in the house. I started screaming, however, I heard no voice. Since I could not run, I had to hold my brother tight thinking he was the one who would rescue me. I heard a loud knock on the door causing me to wake up. My heart was beating fast and when I peeped through my window, I saw our neighbors standing outside. I opened the door so I could hear what was happening. One of them asked if everything was okay, claiming he heard screams all night. It is at this point that I realized that I had my worst nightmare.

My worst nightmare.

The howling wind rattled the windowpanes in the bitter, damp night outside. I twisted and turned under my thin covers. My teeth chattered in the chilly air around me. I couldn’t sleep. My sweat dripped down my forehead and my heart was thumping hard at my chest. I was always afraid of the dark and I still am. But this was the first time I had slept alone in a hollow, ominous and shadowy room with no wallpaper. Instead of a carpet, there were filthy floorboards that creaked and moaned. There was also a wardrobe that I had never opened before because we had only moved in this huge house yesterday. I was afraid of this great, dirty old piece of furniture. But never mind that. I turned over and prayed that I would go to sleep. I couldn’t drift off. It was no use. I turned on my lamp and stood up. Is there anything here to do, I wandered. I decided to go downstairs to watch TV. The floorboards creaked under my feet as I slowly and silently crept downstairs. Then suddenly I stopped, my heart beating so fast that I thought my ribs were going to crack. Hands clutched tightly on the stair railings, I strained my ears for the sound that just came from the living room. Low moans could be heard, like a wounded dog. I struggled to catch my breath for a moment. But just then there came an angry growl. My blood froze and my whole body seemed like carved ice. Then tremulously, I stumbled to the living room door and opened it.

I almost screamed when I saw the two occupants sitting on our living room couch. But I couldn’t. I just stared, gaping in horror, at an enormous shaggy black dog the size of a horse, which was panting loudly. There was also a short, stout man with a white beard longer than a walking stick. He was wearing a silky, black coat but it was too long for him that it trailed down the floor. He was also wearing a golfers hat. The man turned his head towards me and smiled. My eyes were wide with terror and fear and for a moment I thought my whole body was going to collapse.

“ You must be Drake, are you not?” Said the man cheerfully.

“ I am,” I said slowly, my voice cracking with fear.

“ Do you know who I am,” said the man, sitting comfortably on the couch as he spoke.

“ N-no,” I stumbled.

“ I am your fairy godfather,” the man pronounced proudly. “And this is Wellard, my transformer.”

“ You’re what?” I blurted out.

“ My transformer,” repeated the man. “Look, I’ll show you.” The man stood up and began to bark at the dog and in an instant it turned into a mouse trotting on the carpet.

I was shaking like a jelly. What the hec is going on, I thought.

“ Transform back, Wellard,” the man shouted. Wellard turned back into a dog.

“ Very useful you know,” said the man.” Now let’s get to business shall we. Well Drake, I’ve come here to warn you about something.” His voice was slow and very serious now. “The great witch Sathia will visit you when the clock strikes one. I want you to know that this grand house once belonged to her. She gets furious if anyone else lives here. For many years, this house had not been touched or lived by. Now that you and your family live here, she will try to kill you. It is up to you to save yourself and your family. There is also one more thing. If she bites you with your fangs you will either turn like her or become a fairy godfather like me. Good luck!” the man and the dog were gone in a swish of lightening. I was petrified to the spot. My head slowly swivelled to the clock. It read one 'clock. Then suddenly everything went dark.

“ This is your worst nightmare,” spoke a ghastly voice behind me. Trembling, I looked back. A girl with very long black wild hair and blank white eyes was floating in midair with a black cloak covering her and her fanged teeth drooling with blood. She had a pointed nose and a mean smile played around her reddish lips. It looked as if though she had no legs. She swivelled closer to me and spoke again.

“ Thought you and your little vermin family could live in my beloved house,” she croaked. My insides were like serpents and my heart was burning with fright.

“ Leave us alone,” I choked out. “ Or, or I’ll kill you.” The witch cackled.

“ You pathetic little boy. No one can kill me. Only the burning light can destroy me. But you shall be dead before morning will wake.” Then she whirled her cloak and disappeared.

“ Here I am you prat,” she screamed. She was on the other side of the room now.

“Come and get me, little boy. Lets play some games.” She cackled madly and sent some sparks that hit me right in the stomach. Oh how painful it was. Anger started to build up on me. Then suddenly, I saw a torch in the corner of the desk near the television. Only the burning light could kill her, I thought. While she carried on laughing, I edged right next to the torch and then quickly grabbed for it. I turned it on and held the streaming torch, facing it directly at her. At once the witch began to scream in pain and agony. She tried to shield her eyes but the witch just burned and screamed. Then she sent her last spell before a trail of ash was left on the floor.

The spell hit me and I screamed and yelled myself until someone slapped me on the face. I opened my eyes. It was my sister.

“ Hey, what’s with the screaming,” my young sister cried out. I looked around. I was back in my plain bedroom with the big wardrobe and it was morning. I gasped for breath.

“ I had a nightmare. Oh lord it was only a nightmare.”

“ I had a nightmare too,” said my sister.

“ Did you,” I replied. I was so relieved.

“ Yeah,” my sister went on, “ I dreamt about a witch who bit my neck.” I looked at her neck. It had deep cuts. My lips began to tremble.

“ You still have the cuts,” I cried out.

“ I know,” croaked my sister, her eyes flashing. “Welcome to your real nightmare!!!”

My Worst Nightmare

The story is about a girl who had two friends over at her house when they received a scary message from an unknown person. They didn’t take it seriously and continued chatting until one of the girls went to the bathroom and didn’t return. The protagonist went to check on her friends and found them dead. She was attacked by the killer but managed to escape and call the police. The killer fell into the pool and was caught by the police. The protagonist’s parents arrived and the night was finally over.

It started in my room, during a solitary moment when the clock hit midnight. The recollections of my two friends’ deaths in this house overwhelmed me. This occurred on a Friday evening while my parents attended a party. To avoid being alone, I had asked my two dearest friends to come over. We were gathered in my room, engrossed in our laptops, playfully messaging each other. Out of nowhere, we received an unsettling message from ‘yourworstnightmare84’ advising us to be careful because our worst fear would manifest that night. The three of us exchanged apprehensive gazes.

Michelle appeared pale and Kylie was filled with fear as she nervously questioned, “Who sent this?” In an effort to calm them down, I replied, “It’s probably just someone trying to scare us. Don’t be scared.” Suddenly, a new message popped up on the screen: “Maybe you should be worried.” Worriedly, Michelle inquired, “Does that mean he’s inside our house?” Hastily, I reassured her by saying, “No. It seems like the microphone on my laptop must have transmitted my voice to this unsettling person’s computer.” Michelle let out a relieved sigh and added with relief, “That’s good news because I really need to go to the bathroom.”

After leaving the room, Kylie and I both powered off our laptops. We engaged in a lengthy conversation lasting for an hour and a half, focusing on the attractive boys at our school. It was during this discussion that we realized Michelle had not come back yet. Concerned about her well-being, Kylie volunteered to check on her since she had been in the bathroom for quite some time.

I waited patiently for their return but grew increasingly worried when several minutes went by without any sign of them. Determined to uncover the cause of the delay, I sprinted down the stairs until reaching the bathroom door. Anxiously opening it, I was met with a horrifying sight: Michelle’s gaze.

Michelle and Kylie suffered a horrifying fate when they were brutally stabbed, resulting in their throats being slit and their t-shirts stained with blood. I found myself paralyzed by fear, torn between the desire to escape from the house where the killer couldn’t harm me and my body’s inability to respond. However, after hesitating for a moment, I mustered up the courage to sprint towards the door. Just as I was about to reach it, a menacing man grabbed hold of my throat and trapped me in a suffocating grip. Gasping for air, I somehow gathered enough strength to forcefully thrust my fist forward and strike him with all my might.

After stumbling back, I rushed to my backyard and discovered that my gate was locked, leaving me trapped. The killer aggressively came towards me, but miraculously, I narrowly avoided his attack with his bloodied knife. Instead, he plunged into the deep end of my pool where he struggled for air despite not being able to swim. Without hesitation, I immediately called the police who arrived in just five minutes. Soon after, my parents also arrived on the scene and finally brought a sense of relief as this terrifying night came to an end.

I lay down and waited for the soothing blanket of sleep shroud me. A few seconds later the anticipated blackness of slumber settled inÃ¢ÂÂ¦

Suddenly, the deafening noise of the alarm clock woke me up with a startling jolt. It seemed as though I had fallen asleep mere seconds ago and as I groggily looked around something did not seem right. The room looked the same as it did before I went to sleep. In the bright orange light that seemed to come from hell's keep itself, shown through the flimsy curtains from the eerily noiseless street behind our house I could see that nothing was amiss. Nothing that I could notice straight away that is.

As I got up from my bed, I saw that my sister was not in hers'. I looked around once more, as the feeling of peculiar alarm and angst worked from the top of my head to the tips of my toes.

I was at once perturbed and shaken as I saw that the room was clean, severely clean. There was naught on the tables, or in the wardrobe, not dust nor a shadow of the things that had been there and as I turned to look at the alarm clock, I was only more agitated to find the side table to be glimmeringly spotless.

As the twisted black feeling of fear grew, I knew I had to go through the entire house. Having no idea of what time it was; except that it was dark; sinister as any night in a horror movie outside, I went through each and every room in our house only to find all of them stripped bare, like a newborn baby, from the ceiling to the floor. It was as though it had taken hours for me...

The story begins when Brian, a thirteen-year-old boy, is traveling on an airplane. Brian is from the city, and is traveling to Canada to visit his Father. The setting is in the Canadian wilderness and is most important because Brian’s adventure would have been impossible in a city. Brian was very upset about his parents separation, but was excited to be visiting his father. However “The Secret,” as Brian refers to it, is always in the back of his mind. Brian has seen his mother with another man. He wants desperately to tell his father, but knows his father would be crushed. I think that this situation is something that could happen in real life. Brian is totally distraught. If I were in his place, I would be also. But instead of worrying about telling my father, I think I would be worrying about confronting my mother with the situation. I would feel I needed to stop the affair before my father did find out.

Abstract/Summary

This research was conducted to determine if same-sex marriage is applicable in our country. The research questions are the following: Whether or not same sex marriage is violative of the 1987 Constitution? Whether or not Articles 1 and 2 of the Family Code run counter to Article 3, Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution? Whether or not same-sex marriage is contrary to Section 2, Article 15 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution Even if the Family Code of the Philippines clearly defines marriage as a permanent union between a man and a woman, the constitution is unclear on the concept of marriage between homosexuals. This research was done to interpret the provisions of the Constitution regarding marriage and its applicability to homosexual couples.

Same-Sex Marriage And Its Legal Hindrance In The Philippines.

Leading lawyer, judge, and writer Justice Robert A. Jackson once said: “[f]reedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order.”

Touching the very heart of the existing order is the issue on same-sex marriage or — more accurately — unions. US-based Pew Research Center noted that the number of governments which consider granting legal recognition to same-sex marriage are growing. Around two dozen countries, mostly in Europe and the Americas, already allow same-sex marriage. However, as of date, a marriage or union between two Filipino citizens of the same sex is not legally recognized in the Philippines.

The issue once again found its way to national relevance after President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncement. Reversing his 2016 campaign promise to support legislation allowing same-sex marriage, President Duterte said that while he has no issue with anyone’s sexuality, he believes that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. He anchors this statement on Philippine laws, particularly Executive Order No. 209, otherwise known as “The Family Code of the Philippines,” which governs the law on marriage.

While President Duterte’s change of stance was widely criticized by rights groups, it was welcomed by the Roman Catholic Church, from which staunch opposition against same-sex marriage largely comes. Philippines is known as Asia’s bastion of Roman Catholicism and this heavily explains the church’s political influence over more than 80% of the population who are its members.

The Family Code defines marriage as “a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman.” It further provides as one of the essential requisites that the contracting parties “must be a male and a female.” It thus clearly prohibits same-sex couples from entering into a contract of marriage. The same law mentions homosexuality and lesbianism, but only as grounds to annul a marriage or to allow legal separation.

However, the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the supreme law of the land, neither discriminates nor prohibits same-sex marriage. It provided only for the significance of marriage, such that marriage, “as an inviolable social institution, is the foundation of the family and shall be protected by the State.”

Thus, there is no impediment against legalizing same-sex marriage in the Philippines. However, there needs to be an enabling law redefining, and changing the parties who may contract, marriage.

Bills protecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community, which include the legalization of same-sex civil marriage, are not among those which the House of Representatives prioritizes. As early as 18 years ago, a bill legalizing same-sex marriage was filed by former Representative Etta Rosales, but it never progressed from first reading. The same counterpart measure was sponsored by Senator Risa Hontiveros last year but it only also reached as far as first reading. Numerous anti-discrimination proposals have been served on the table but none of which was a success.

A country report initiated by the United Nations Development Program highlighted the fact that while the Philippines is a signatory to many relevant international covenants promoting human rights, the rights of the LGBT community are not always supported by the state.

It is a fact that same-sex activity is not criminalized in the Philippines and sexual orientation is mentioned in various laws. However, national legislation is bereft of anti-discriminatory laws which allow the LGBT community to fully exercise their fundamental rights to equality and non-discrimination. Though there are victories in the form of ordinances passed by local government units, such as Quezon City, Angeles, Cebu, Bacolod, and Davao, addressing discrimination against the LGBT community, there is not much to revel in terms of the latter’s opportunities to build a family.

Without marriage, same-sex couples suffer from substantially lesser rights compared to heterosexual couples. There are legal issues involving the former’s adoption and custody of children, hospital and prison visitation rights, management and transfer of properties, medical and burial decisions, and entitlement to insurance proceeds. Same-sex couples resort to certain legal, albeit limited, approaches to legitimize their union — adoption, which is allowed if done by a single LGBT person; business partnership, to jointly own properties; and a special power of attorney, to name a few.

In the landmark case of Ang Ladlad LGBT Party v. COMELEC, no less than the highest court of the land recognizes “that practical solutions are preferable to ideological stalemates; accommodation is better than intransigence; reason more worthy than rhetoric. This will allow persons of diverse viewpoints to live together, if not harmoniously, then, at least, civilly.”

Same-sex marriage is an issue that is still heavily debated upon. Grounds raised against it range from moral to legal. However, the legal impediment against same-sex marriage can be cured by legislation. There is no absolute prohibition against legitimizing — at least, civilly — unions between two Filipinos of the same sex. Hence, it is legally feasible for the legislative branch of the government — the Congress and the Senate — to enact a law which legalizes same-sex marriage in the Philippines.

Our freedom to differ and, ultimately, our freedom to choose must not be limited by existing laws, especially when there is nothing that prohibits legislation accommodating legitimate calls for equality, which the Constitution itself enshrines.

Weaponising Religious Freedom: Same-Sex Marriage and Gender Equality in the Philippines

This article spells out the ways in which religious freedom has been deployed against proponents of same-sex marriage and gender equality in the Philippines. While the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer ( LGBTQ ) community and allies have appealed to religious freedom to gain equal rights under the law, conservative Christian entities have fought back by invoking the same notion. They have appropriated religious freedom, which has historically been interpreted by the courts in favour of individual liberties, to defend majoritarian values surrounding sexuality. This article describes this move as the weaponisation of religious freedom in defence of the dominant religion and an assumed majority of Filipinos whose moral sensibilities are purportedly under attack. Towards the end, the article relates this weaponisation to the experience of the Catholic Church in the contemporary public sphere and the militant character of Christianity that continues to view the Philippines as a Christian nation.

The ever-changing trends in the world brought by the growing ideas and modernization indeed limited the faculty of conservatism. Various actions and styles that were behind the bars before were apparently free and accepted in the society. However, there are still cases where conservatism prevails causing conflicts between the traditionalists and progressive individuals. An exemplar to this is the issue of homosexuality. For the longest years, the issue of gay rights has been subjected to a number of heated debates. Such issue had not only touched the social, religious, and cultural aspects, for it also crossed the boundaries of politics. Currently, the LGBTQ, an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning community, shares the plight for greater social acceptance and their struggle to practice their constitutional rights as humans too. Included in these rights is their right to marriage.Same-sex marriage sparked a long controversy leading to the dividing views of citizensand involved institutions, fervent debates within the social and cultural norms, and the question of being a political issue were prevalent. However, despite these various contentions against same-sex marriage, there were 21 recorded states where gay marriage is legal nationwide. These countries are Netherlands (2000), Belgium (2003), Canada (2005), Spain (2005), South Africa (2006), Norway (2009), Sweden (2009), Argentina (2010), Iceland (2010), Portugal (2010), Denmark (2012), Brazil (2013), England and Wales (2013), France (2013), New Zealand (2013), Uruguay (2013), Luxembourg (2014), Scotland (2014), Finland (signed 2015, effective 2017), Ireland (2015) (Time, 2015). Thus, the issue of same-sex marriage paved the way for debates and researches in several states. As such, this paper attempts to study the possibility of same-sex marriage in the case of one Asian country, particularly the Philippines. The rationale behind this preference originates from the 21 recorded countries where same-sex marriage is legal. And of these 21 countries, none of these is from Asia. The subject matter of this study aims to provide the contrasting views of the involved institutions, particularly the state actors, church, and agents of political socialization in the issue of same-sex marriage. The existence of these varying oppositions relates to the significance of the study. The significance of this study is to determine the influences of state, the church, and other possible agents of political socialization to the legalization of same-sex marriage in case of the Philippines.

This article spells out the ways in which religious freedom has been deployed against proponents of same-sex marriage and gender equality in the Philippines. While the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community and allies have appealed to religious freedom to gain equal rights under the law, conservative Christian entities have fought back by invoking also the same idea. They have appropriated religious freedom, which has historically been interpreted by the courts in favour of individual liberties, to defend majoritarian values surrounding sexuality. This article describes this move as the weaponisation of religious freedom in defence of the dominant religion and an assumed majority of Filipinos whose moral sensibilities are purportedly under attack. Towards the end, the article relates this weaponisation to the experience of the Catholic Church in the contemporary public sphere and the militant character of Christianity that continues to view the Philippines as a Christian nation.

Same-sex marriage in the Philippines remains a highly contentious issue due to the influence of religion in this predominantly Catholic country, where it is often framed as an issue of morality. However, the psychological underpinnings of this religious influence still merits further exploration. Thus, we examined the role of religious behaviors and moral foundations in predicting attitudes toward same-sex marriage among Filipinos. Data from 385 participants revealed that the particular behavior of reading the main sacred text of one's religion, rather than the often-used predictor of religious attendance predicts negative attitudes. Beyond these religious variables, the moral foundation of Purity/sanctity also predicts negative attitudes. Recommendations for further research and possible implications on attitude change are discussed in light of these findings.

The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriages where it gained legal recognition in 2001. The Philippines is a religious nation and most Filipinos share a collective religious view stemming from the predominance of Catholicism. This view includes traditional opinions on gender roles and prohibition of behaviors associated with non-heterosexuality. Lesbians and gays who deviate from this traditional norm, tend to become targets of discrimination and prejudice. Using a correlational design, the present study aimed to investigate whether religiosity and gender role beliefs predict attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. A total of 633 Filipinos who identified themselves as non-LGBT completed the Centrality of Religiosity Scale, the Gender Role Beliefs Scale-Short Version, and the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale-Revised. Correlational results revealed a significant relationship among religiosity, gender role beliefs, and attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. Moreover, regression analysis showed that higher religiosity and more traditional gender role beliefs predicted significantly higher homonegativity among Filipinos who identify themselves as non-LGBT. In the Trump era, a surprising number of evangelicals are rejecting modesty and turning toward the risqué.

Published by a “woke-free beer” company hastily launched last year as an alternative to Bud Light, the calendar was clearly meant to provoke liberals. But when photos of it began circulating online in December, progressives did not pay much attention. Instead, it sparked a heated squabble on the right over whether “conservative dads” who happen to be Christians should reject the calendar on moral grounds, or embrace it as an irreverent win for the good guys.

Allie Beth Stuckey, an evangelical commentator and podcaster, condemned the calendar as “soft porn” marketed to married men, and saw it as proof of growing polarization between Christian and secular conservatism. Other prominent Christian conservatives joined her in expressing their disgust.

But the calendar itself suggested that Christian and secular conservatism are not exactly as distinct as Ms. Stuckey and others might wish. The calendar’s cover model, Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer and activist against transgender women’s participation in women’s sports, frequently speaks at church events and evangelical conferences, and frames her cause as a “spiritual battle.”

In another image, a crucifix hangs prominently on the kitchen wall behind a woman in a tiny skirt, apron and platform heels. On the platform X, the model — Josie Glabach, who goes by “The Redheaded Libertarian” — said she was working to provide for her family, and defended her conservative bona fides in part by referring to her family’s Catholic faith. Using vividly vulgar language, she wrote that she doesn’t care “if the fact that I look hot doing any of it offends your senses.”

Such a debate would have been unimaginable at the turn of the millennium, when the best-known evangelical Christians in America were the evangelist Billy Graham, George W. Bush — the embodiment of establishment Republicanism — and Ned Flanders, a character on “The Simpsons” known for his cheerful prudery.

As a core faction in the Republican coalition, conservative evangelicals have long influenced the party’s policy priorities, including opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage. And the influence extended to conservative culture, where evangelical norms against vulgarity were rarely challenged in public.

In some ways, they remain intact. Most pastors don’t cuss from the pulpit, or at all. Mainstream conservative churches still teach their young people to save sex for marriage and avoid pornography.

Yet a raunchy, outsider, boobs-and-booze ethos has elbowed its way into the conservative power class, accelerated by the rise of Donald J. Trump, the declining influence of traditional religious institutions and a shifting media landscape increasingly dominated by the looser standards of online culture.

When Mr. Trump was elected president in 2016, winning the votes of about eight in 10 white evangelicals, many observers saw it as an essentially transactional relationship. Mr. Trump, a twice-divorced reality television star from New York City, had promised to appoint conservative judges and to defend Christian interests. But he rarely showed up in church, and he defended a recording of him bragging about grabbing women’s genitals as “locker-room banter.” He pitched himself as a protector, not a pious fellow traveler.

But it’s hard to remain fiercely loyal to a figure like Mr. Trump without being changed by him. Eight years after Mr. Trump first secured the Republican nomination for president, it’s clear that the aesthetics, the language and the borders of public morality in evangelical America are shifting.

“As with so many things with Trump, it’s a longer history, but he has also changed the game,” said Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a historian who has studied evangelicalism and masculinity. She cited gleefully combative talk radio of the 1990s as a touchstone in the coarsening of evangelical mores.

The shift is perhaps most visible in politics. Representative Lauren Boebert, who has called for an end to the separation of church and state, was caught on a theater security camera in September vaping and groping her date. (She later blamed her “public and difficult divorce” for her behavior, and said the behavior “fell short of my values.”) Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has embraced the label of “Christian nationalist,” drops vulgarities in hearings , on the House floor and in conversations with reporters .

Last summer, Nancy Mace, a Republican representative from South Carolina, joked about premarital sex and cohabitation, once obvious taboos, from the lectern at a Christian prayer breakfast in Washington. Praising the event’s host, Senator Tim Scott, she opened her talk by saying she had made a special effort to arrive early.

“When I woke up this morning at 7, I was getting picked up at 7:45, Patrick, my fiancé, tried to pull me by my waist over this morning in bed,” she told the audience, which included her pastor and Mr. Scott, an outspoken evangelical. “And I was like, ‘No, baby, we don’t got time for that this morning.’”

She added: “He can wait, I’ll see him later tonight.”

Ms. Mace later brushed off backlash to the remarks, writing on X that “I go to church because I’m a sinner not a saint!”

A New Set of Incentives

Well into the 21st century, conservative evangelicals maintained their reputation for strict standards within their own churches and schools around language and public displays of sexuality.

They did not avoid just profanity, but often also mild transgressions like “wuss” and “darn.” Evangelical Christian schools enforced strict dress codes focused on modesty, especially for girls. In the 1990s, teenagers attended conferences and wore “purity rings” to pledge their commitment to wait until they married to have sex.

There was a widespread agreement that the Bible was clear on these matters. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,” the Apostle Paul wrote in the New Testament book of Ephesians. And elsewhere: “Flee from sexual immorality” and “abstain from all appearance of evil.”

But for some conservative Christians, the stakes of the moment are now high enough that a certain amount of vulgarity is not just tolerated, but also required as a form of truth-telling worthy of the prophets. At a conference in Nashville in 2020 hosted by a right-wing Christian network, an Arizona pastor named Jeff Durbin described institutional evangelicals as captive to secular ideals, comparing them to “a slut who lies down in the middle of a burning city, spreading her legs to the rioters and looters.”

Most transgressions come not from the pulpit or the podium, but the keyboard. There was Jerry Falwell Jr., then the president of evangelical Liberty University, tweeting that pastors like David Platt, a prominent Virginia evangelical leader, need to “grow a pair.” He later deleted the tweet. ( Mr. Falwell resigned from Liberty in 2020 in the wake of a sex scandal).

The influential Idaho pastor and author Doug Wilson, whose profile has risen in the Trump era, casually uses vulgarities like “gaytards” online, and has used an obscenity on his blog in reference to a Lutheran pastor.

Some Christian conservatives argue that the degrading of expectations around crude language and sexual exhibitionism started on the cultural left and cannot be blamed on Mr. Trump.

“I consider Trump a product of the changes in the world,” said Aaron Renn, a conservative writer who has written about Mr. Trump’s appeal but admonished Christians to “ reject vice .”

After flirting with running for president for decades, Mr. Trump finally ran seriously in 2016 because “he sensed the world is different today, the old standards that meant someone” like Mr. Trump “would no longer be considered a viable candidate are no longer operative in society at large,” Mr. Renn said.

Others see the cause as partly technological. Evangelicalism is a decentralized movement, and has always embraced new technology as a way to reach more people. But the old institutions and personalities that defined the culture are fading: Church attendance has declined at the same time that several lions of the movement have died , retired or been felled by scandal . Influencers and outsiders have filled the vacuum.

Online, “the way you stand out is by being the most devoted, the most extreme in the cause,” said Jake Meador, editor in chief of the evangelical publication Mere Orthodoxy, who has been critical of the blurring of evangelical and secular standards.

“That creates totally different incentives,” he said, than the consensus-building of the era when a local church was the primary source of Christian authority and community.

‘Wholesome’ Lust

As for behavior in the bedroom itself, the old stereotype of the Christian prude belies the complex recent history of evangelical frankness around sex in certain settings.

In the late 1960s and ’70s, evangelical authors and publishers produced stacks of “marriage manuals” that were, in practice, sex advice books. The genre had become popular in secular culture in the context of the sexual revolution, and many Christians sought their own guidance in a cultural moment in which many felt threatened by feminism and shifting gender expectations. (One of the best sellers, “The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love,” was written by Beverly and Tim LaHaye. The latter would go on to co-author the “Left Behind” series of apocalyptic thrillers.)

The manuals were deeply conservative in their way, with prohibitions against sexual activities outside the heterosexual marital bed (and some activities in it). But “there’s an automatic assumption that men are more sexual than women and they have this hypersexuality that is natural,” said Kelsy Burke, a sociologist at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln who has written about evangelicals and sexuality. A certain amount of lust is “a sin that they acknowledge but is also part of the natural male condition.”

This generation of evangelical leaders was easily teased for its puritanism, and, whenever a sexual scandal erupted, for its hypocrisy. But they were trying to thread a difficult needle, maintaining high community standards without withdrawing from an ever-coarsening mainstream American culture.

With a mission to evangelize that culture, they also wanted to remain relevant and appealing, communicating that you don’t have to give up fun and good sex to become a Christian. It was a complex balancing act between an acknowledgment of basic human urges and the dictates of their faith, whose strictures around language and sexual behavior they saw reflecting deeper theological commitments.

But shared fears can make some vices look like virtues. In a moment in which some Christians feel the world has become dangerously unbalanced, piety can be framed as “wokeness,” and breaking taboos as bravery.

The partial embrace of vulgarity, Dr. Kobes Du Mez pointed out, is happening in a moment of deep conservative outrage, an often visceral disgust, at rising rates of nontraditional gender and sexual identities, particularly among young people. In that context, an indulgence in heterosexual lust, even if in poor taste, is becoming seen as not just benign, but maybe even healthy and noble.

Part of the reason transgender identities are considered a threat is that they blur gender difference, Dr. Kobes Du Mez said. “Against that backdrop, it’s a wholesome thing for a boy to be lusting after a very sexy woman.”
