Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Step-by-Step Guide

Visa application, processing, and getting are quite hustling for many people. But without a visa, you can hardly cross the border of other countries. And if you’re planning to visit Australia, then you can’t skip the visa processing.

Though Australia is pretty strict about visas, it doesn’t mean it is very hard to get an Australian visitor visa . Even I would say the Australian visa processing is much easier than any other country as the whole process takes place online.

So, you can apply from your home. All you need is a phone or computer and a strong internet connection.

If you’re a first-time traveller and you intend to visit Australia as a genuine visitor, you should apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) . Also, if your Australian ETA (601) been refused and asked to apply Subclass 600 instead subclass 601 the follow this article.

Here in this article, I will give you a step-by-step guideline of how to apply for a visitor visa and some DOs and DON’Ts that you should follow if you don’t want your visa to be denied.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Understanding Australia visitor visa Subclass 600

What is australian visitor visa (subclass 600).

Australian visitor Visa

An Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is a short time visit visa that will allow you to enter Australia for less than three months. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia for an allotted amount of time, with you being responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations associated with it.

Visitor visa (Subclass 600) has nearly six streams, but the two main streams are the Tourist stream and the Business stream . The visa validation, cost, and time processing depend on these streams.

Tourist Stream

Travellers looking to visit Australia should apply for a tourist stream visa. This visa is typically used by visitors who are going to Australia for leisure, medical treatment, visiting family or friends, and even completing short-term study or training activities lasting less than 3 months.

Business Stream

The Business Visitor Stream visa is for those travelling to Australia for business-related activities, such as attending a conference, training or seminars. Non-work-related activities such as networking and making sales enquiries are also allowed. It is important to note that this visa does not allow recipients to provide their services in the country while they are here.

Requirements for Australian visitor visa

Here I have listed some required and recommended information and documents that you may need to apply for the Australian visitor visa.

1. Online application form

Applying for a visa to enter, travel and stay in Australia just got simpler. Those looking to apply now can go online to complete the entire process, making it that much faster and more convenient! So, you can apply for your visa at your home without any hustle.

You have to fill up a 19-page application form that you will get after creating an ImmiAccount on the official immigration website of the Australian government. Get more details about the application form in the “how to apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) online” below.

2. A Valid Passport

When applying for an Australian visa, it is necessary to provide a valid passport as part of the application documentation. This is essential for the Australian government to consider and process visa requests. You have to scan your passport and then attach the file with the application form. The scanned copy should be clear and transparent. Otherwise, your visa can be rejected.

3. Recent passport size photos

As you have to provide all information through an online process, you must submit a soft copy of every document, including your photo and passport. You must attach a coloured passport-size photo to the required section of your application form. The photo must be clear and vivid.

4. National identity cards (if Have)

National identity cards are not mandatory for all applicants. But if you have, you must submit it. And if you’re under 18 and you don’t have your national identity card, then you can provide your birth certificate or other documents as evidence of your identity.

5. Proof of financial status

Proof of financial status is crucial for an Australian visitor visa, proving that you have enough funds in your bank account to support your stay and leave in Australia. To prove your financial status and you have enough funds, you need the following documents:

Your bank statement of at least three months period (if you’re carrying your trip expense).  Tax Return Your pay slips. Term deposits Audited accounts Credit card statement (if have)

Note: If someone is sponsoring your Australia trip, you may have to apply for a Sponsored family stream visa. Usually, your family member can sponsor your trip under this visa who has Australian citizenship or permanent resident, and your sponsor might be asked to pay a security bond.

6. travel itineries

A travel itinerary is a very important information that you must attach to your application form. In this travel itinerary, you have to include your day-to-day plans like places to visit and things to do during your vacation. And also mention the date, time, and your accommodation. Here is a sample copy of the travel itinerary . You only can submit a pdf copy of your travel itinerary.

Note: Travel itinerary is mandatory ONLY for those you are applying for the Tourist stream .

7. A cover letter

A cover letter is surely optional, but it can help you to get the visa smoothly. Because the whole process of applying and getting the Austria visitor visa would be online, there is no interview where you can explain your travel plans and purpose.

So, it is better to submit a cover letter that will explain your travel reason and travel plans. But of course, your cover letter must support every information that you have already submitted for the visa application.

8. Travel health insurance

Travel health insurance is also optional, like the cover letter, but it helps a lot to get the visa, and at the same time, the insurance is helpful during your stay in Australia. For example, if you have a medical emergency during your stay or your flight has been cancelled, you will get immediate financial support from the insurance company. So, travel insurance is required for your own sake and the visa authority also gets assurance that you can carry any medical emergency if needed.

9. Proof of employment status

With your visa application, you also need to submit evidence of your employment status.

For employee

  • NOC or Non-Objection Certificate
  • A letter that explains your role in the company
  • Income tax document

For Self-Employed or business owners

  • Business licence
  • A finance sheet that explains profits and losses

For Students

  • Students need to show their enrolment certificate of the particular school or university.
  • A non-objection letter from the specific school or university.

10. Application Fees

If you’re applying from outside Australia, then the tourist stream will cost you AUD 190.00 . And the cost is also the same for a business stream visa. You can pay the visa fee through your credit card, debit card, UnionPay, PayPal, and BPAY.

11. Additional Information

A Flight itinerary that will show Australia entering and exiting dates. And without buying an actual flight ticket, you can reserve your roundtrip flight which is also refundable in case your visa gets rejected.

An invitation letter from your family or friends if you’re staying with them in Australia. The letter should state your relationship with them, the reason for your trip, and so on.

Provide evidence of your previous travel (if you have). It may help you to get the visa smoothly.

A marriage license (if have) or a divorce certificate (if have).

Any property paper or house paper that you own in your home country.

Note: If any of this information is not in English, you’re highly recommended to translate them into English and then submit them.

Important Notes:

You don’t have to submit all the documents as some are required, and some are recommended. But it is better to submit as many as possible, which will increase the possibility of getting the visa. And remember your passport and photo are mandatory that you can’t skip. As you know, all your files have to be submitted through an online process. So, you have to make them either a jpg, PNG, BMP, or PDF file to submit. And no zip files or encrypted pdf files are acceptable. Don’t make your file size more than 5MB, as larger size files are not acceptable. If you have files that are bigger than 5MB, make sure you reduce the size and then upload them.

How to Apply for an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Online?

Obtaining a visa to visit Australia is straightforward if you have the right information and documents. A simple guide can help make the process simpler and stress-free. Here I have explained how to apply for an Australian visitor visa in four easy steps. Also, you can watch my video in above.

1. Create an ImmiAccount

Creating an ImmiAccount is the most simple and crucial part of an Australian visitor visa application. Without having the ImmiAccount, you can’t get the application form, and you have to create it from immi.gov.au , which is the official immigration website of the Australian government.

Here you will get two steps to create the account. You need to fill up your family name, phone number, and, most importantly, an active email address at the first step. In comparison, the second step requires setting a password and some questions about you. Click here to create your ImmiAccount .

2. Fill up the application form

After registering for the ImmiAccount, you will receive an email to get access to the account. Now you just have to do the following steps.

First, log in to your account and click the “ New application ” option.  Then you have to choose the visa type. If you’re a genuine tourist, select the “ visitor ” option and then “ visitor visa (600) “. Now you have a 19-page application form which you must fill up carefully and correctly. Don’t give any wrong information that may cause your visa denial.

In these three simple steps, you can accomplish your visitor visa application form. And in case you cannot fill up your application form right then, you can always save it and edit it later. Moreover, you don’t have to print the form. Just fill-up the form and submit it. But be sure you have given all the correct information before submitting it.

3. Attach relevant documents

At this point, you have to submit all the required and recommended documents that we have mentioned before. On your application dashboard, you will have an option where you can upload all your files. Make sure you submit as many files as possible and make them less than 5MB before submitting them.

Now it’s time to submit your application form and then receive an Application Receipt via email.

Note: Remember, after submitting your application form, you cannot edit it anymore. So do double check before submitting.

4. Pay the visa fees

Now the last step is payment. The tourist stream visa fee is AUD 190.00 , and you also need to pay it online through a Credit card, debit card, UnionPay, or PayPal.

5. Make an Appointment for Biometrics

After submitting the application, create an account with VFS Global for biometric enrollment. You should have already received an email from Home Affairs regarding this, which includes an attachment stating the requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of Section 40 of the Migration Act 1958 in relation to your Visitor (Tourist) (subclass 600) visa application. Please use your application number to schedule an appointment with VFS.

What is the Processing Time?

No one can predict the visa processing time as it is based on circumstances and the age of application finalisation. My visa processing time took nearly two years because I applied in February 2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the border was closed. I have received my visa confirmation email in March 2022.

But don’t be scared! Now the border has reopened for all visitors, and the processing time may take a few weeks. So don’t be so hopeless, just wait patiently as I did.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is Australia issuing visitor visa now?

Australia does issue visitor visas, and I have personally traveled to the country using one.

How do I get a tourist visa for Australia?

Follow the step above or to apply for an Australian tourist visa, you will need to complete an online application form, provide supporting documents such as your passport and proof of funds, and pay the application fees.

How long can I stay in Australia on visitor visa?

The length of stay for a visitor visa in Australia can vary depending on the type of visa and individual circumstances. Generally, a visitor visa allows for stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months. It is important to check the specific details of your visa to determine your maximum length of stay.

How much is a 3-month tourist visa to Australia?

The cost of a 3-month tourist visa to Australia varies depending on the applicant’s country of origin. For example, the fee for a US citizen is AUD $140, while the fee for a citizen of India is AUD $145. It’s important to note that additional fees may apply, such as health assessments or biometrics.

What is the visa validity time?

The visa validation depends on your travel itinerary and your nationality. Australian family visitor visa is generally granted for a period of 12 months. But normally, the Australian border agency will decide entry validity. In most cases it will be 3 months per entry.

Do I need to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation?

It is not compulsory to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation. But if you can manage a roundtrip flight ticket and book a staycation with a refund policy, it is better to submit these documents as they increase the chance of your visa approval. My suggestion is must do submit proof of accommodations including flight reservation.

How early should I apply for an Australian visitor visa?

It also depends on your travel itinerary, but you should apply at least six months before your planned trip. Since there is a huge backlog, submit your application as early as possible.

How much bank balance do I need for the approval of my visa?

It is hard to say any exact number that you need to have in your bank account. Because it depends on many factors like how many days you’re intended to stay in Australia, your accommodation cost, your daily cost, etc. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank account so that you can maintain your stay and leave. With my personal experience, Australia is a very expensive place for many including myself. If you have pre-booked (paid) accommodations and purchased flight tickets, then i think at least A$ 200 per day.

What can be the possible reasons for an application denial?

Your visa can be denied, refused or rejected for many different reasons. But the most primary and possible reasons are the following: If you submit wrong information or unclear information. If you fail to prove that you have no intension to overstay in Australia. If your travel purpose is ambiguous. If you fail to prove that you or your sponsor has enough funds to support your trip. Weak travel history Not enough funds Fake or misleading information Not telling truth about previous visa application refused from other countries, namely from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

Having navigated the Australian visa process myself, I can attest to its relative simplicity, especially with the online application system. If you’re considering a visit Down Under, opting for the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a wise choice. And if you ever need assistance or guidance along the way, Gold migration lawyers are there to lend a helping hand.

Can I apply Australia visit visa subclass 600 without travel history?. Because I never visit any country.

' src=

@Ashrafur Rahman. Of course, you can apply Australian visitor visa sub class 600 without any travel history.

' src=

i applied for a tourist visa in April 2023, but they refused. The status is

The applicant claims to be employed with xxxxx Electrical as Site engineer. Documents provided in support of the application include travel details, employment, financial and income documents along with inviter’s documents. In assessing these criteria, I have taken into account the information provided by the applicant in their visa application form and the supporting documents. I find that the information provided is not sufficient to satisfy me of their genuine temporary stay intention, and the applicant has not demonstrated that they have sufficiently strong commitments in India that would be an incentive for them to return to India

now can i re apply for visa

You can re-apply but I think better to get professional guidance. There should be more evidence to return to India.

My wife is on work visa in australia and she had applied for tourist visa for me on my behalf but visa got refused due to insufficient document like my income detail. Just wanted to know: 1. If i can apply again from my side and if it is mandatory to mention in the online form regarding my first visa refusal or if it is ok without mentioning. 2. Also just wanted to know the list of mandatory documents required to upload along with the recommended documents.. What if I don’t have recommended documents.. 3. Since my wife is on work visa, can she sponsor me ?if yes, what all documents is required apart from invitation letter from my wife?

Hi Prashant. Your first question answer is you must need to tell them about your previous visa refusal even if it was not for Australia. Also, could you please share a bit more privately? Using our contact us page .

I have applied my Visitor Visa Subclass 600 on Dec 25th 2022 and still the application status is stuck at ”Further Assessment”. I have provided all requested documents = total is 23 docs uploaded to the immi account.

Any idea when I will be able to get the Visa grant letter for my application.

Appreciate your help

@Rahul Jonathan The timing for when you will receive your Australian visa grant letter, or any other related documents is dependent on many factors such as demographics and recent trends in applications. While the processing time may vary, it is advisable to wait for at least the designated processing period before reaching out to the authorities regarding an inquiry on your visa status. Best of luck!

My Wife and I is in the midst of processing the ETA to go to Australia. We have been rejected once before so I wonder if it’s still advisable to pursue the same path or go with subclass 600? though the first time we did not have our flights booked.

FYI our intention is so that my wife could attend her exam on 16 December 2022 at Brisbane, additionally, we’ll be visiting our relatives in the same city as well. from your article, you mentioned that an invitation letter from our relatives might further strengthen our application. May I please have a copy or a sample of such letter?

I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected once before. While it is not impossible for you and your wife to be approved again, it is still a challenge.

In your case, I would advise you to pursue ETA visa rather than a subclass 600. This is because the ETA visa does not require an invitation letter from your relative in Australia. However, if you choose the subclass 600 route, then I would suggest that you contact our office so that we can write an invitation letter for you and attach it to your application when we lodge it on your behalf.

What should I put in section where it asked for other travel documents? Will this include my expired passport and used/existing visas from other countries?

Do you have any other passports? Or you are a dual citizen? If not a dual citizen please include all your last 5 years travel histories. If you are Malaysian just use their ETA apps.

Do We Need to Upload Certified/ Notarised copies of New and Old Passport all pages?

Hi, you no need to notarized all passport pages. If you have good travel history on your old and new passport then combine all those pages and upload it together with other documents.

Hi, I am in South Australia on a student visa. My wife sister is a citizen here and she applied visitor visa for my wife on 9th June, 2022, but its still not approved. Could you please let me know why this visa is taking so long? Will my student visa affect their visitor visa?

Some nationality get longer waiting time then others. You are already there legally on a student visa so I don’t think your wife application will have anything with your current student visa.

have your wife got the visa now?

Hello, I have submitted my visitors visa application last June 19,2022 and the status is for further assessment. What does it mean? How woud I know if there’s incorrect upload of the required attachment, do they email me about it? I am just confused because under actions of my immi account it says Attached documents and health assessment. when I click on health assement it says no further examination required. on attached documemts it says further assessment. This is my second application. my first application was in 2019 and took only 10 days to receive the grant notification. Im considering the delay might due to backlogs. Appreciate your feedback

Hello there, health assement not required for tourists. The Department of Home Affairs will make further assessment on your visa application. You will be informed of this in writing by the Department and be given the opportunity to provide additional information or documents as part of this process. I am agree with you that delay might be the reason of huge backlogs. And regarding incorrect uploads, The answer is, you don’t need to upload any more documents as they are already there unless you received any email for additional documents. Please do Re-check all your uploaded documents one more time. Thank you and wish you good luck on your visa application

' src=

With regard to submission of documents not in English should I provide both original and translated documents.

Hi there. Submit only translated copy but make sure do the translation from authorized by them. I submitted only translated copy and keep the original with me. Hope this helps

Hi, did they asked you to submit anymore documents? If not then just wait or you may just send them an email to ask your status. Family sponsored visa usually gets approved just wait and let me know if you get your visa.

The Visa Officer

Australian High Commission

Subject: Request for Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am Sita Kumari and I am an Indian citizen residing in Mumbai. I am writing this letter to request a visitor visa (subclass 600) to explore the Australian wonders of nature. The duration of my stay in Australia will be for one week (DD.MM.YYYY to DD.MM.YYYY)  as I intend to spend my winter vacation this year traversing the sparkling beaches, beautiful landscapes and exotic tourist destinations.

My detailed research on Australian destinations have helped me prepare the following itinerary which I have attached for your kind consideration:

Day 1 – I am scheduled to arrive at the “name of airport” at “flight timing” on DD.MM.YYYY. I intend to spend that day in Melbourne city, explore popular spots like Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, Queen Victoria Markets and call it a day with a chilled beer served at a local pub.

Day 2 – I want to take on to the Great Ocean Road and drive through seaside towns, hoping for whale lookouts along the picturesque mountain ranges. I hope to visit Port Campbell National Park too.

Day 3 – I am taking “flight number” to Sydney scheduled at “flight timing” on DD.MM.YYYY. I have reservations at “name of hotel”. I intend to hire a tour guide at The Rocks neighbourhood to go on a local pub tour.

Day 4 – I want to go hiking at the UNESCO World Heritage Region, Blue Mountains together with exploring the rich fauna and flora. I also want to witness the Grose Valley which is also better known as Australia’s Grand Canyon.

Day 5 – I intend to fly to Cairns at “flight timing” from “name of airport” on DD.MM.YYYY. I am eager to experience the night fire dinner at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.

Day 6 – I want to spend the next entire day exploring the beautiful Great Barrier Reef. I intend to board a catamaran, go snorkelling and learn about the reefs.

Day 7 – I want to spend the day shopping for my family and then board the “name of flight” scheduled at “flight timing” and get back to Mumbai on DD.MM.YYYY.

I am a doctor by profession and I am currently working at Fortis Hospital Mulund as Senior Gastroenterologist. I earn a handsome salary of XXXXX and I will be funding my trip by myself. I have a savings account in “name of bank” in which I maintained a bank balance of XXXXXX. This will be enough to do with all the expenses I will incur during my pleasure trip to Australia.

I am hereby declaring that I have no intentions to prolong my stay beyond DD.MM.YYYY. I have to return back to my parents who have raised me with love and care. I am a single child and they have set aside their lives to do everything to make my dreams come true. Hence, I am trying to pay that debt by being there for them in their old age. Though they will be looked after by my first cousin, Shyamala Kumari, who is visiting them for her vacation, I need to take the baton back within one week. She has plans to visit her parents, my uncle and aunt, who currently reside in Visakhapatnam.

Besides, I have to get back to my role as a healthcare professional at Fortis. I have been granted a leave from DD.MM.YYYY until DD.MM.YYYY which is exactly the duration I intend to stay in Australia. Hence, I have to return to Mumbai as it is my permanent home.

I am attaching the following documents with this cover letter for your evaluation:

  • Copy of my passport
  • Savings bank account statements
  • ITRs filed
  • Ownership documents of both moveable and immoveable property in Mumbai
  • Photographs that meet the visa requirements
  • Copy of my Aadhar card
  • Travel insurance
  • Proof of my leave approval
  • My payslips
  • My registration certificate

I am certain that I have presented all the information with utmost accuracy and clarity. If you need any further clarification or documents, please contact me at “phone number” or “email id”.

I would like to close by expressing my sincere gratitude for the time and consideration for my visitor visa application to Australia.

Yours Sincerely,

Sita Kumari

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, Tourist Stream) Sample

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.

You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

  • Those transiting in Australia for less than 72 hours and can get a Transit visa .

Documents required

To support your application, you can attach as many as 60 documents online. You don’t have to attach that many but the more documents you provide, the better your chances of approval.

You have to satisfy the Home Office that:

  • You are who you say you are
  • You are a genuine visitor who will not overstay or work illegally
  • You are of good character and not have a criminal record
  • You won’t be a burden to Australia’s healthcare system

To do this, attach as many of these documents as you can :

Identity documents

  • Valid passport (must be valid for the duration of the stay)
  • Valid National ID card (if from a country that issues them)
  • marriage or divorce certificate;
  • change of name documents;

  • Residence Permit/Visa (if residence and citizenship differ)
  • One passport-size photo

Genuine visitor documents

  • Itemized personal bank statements for the last 3 months. Aim to have at least 5000 AUD in your bank account. The money cannot be deposited suddenly and inexplicably – it should be from legitimate sources and savings over time.
  • Tax returns
  • Credit card statements
  • their relationship to you
  • the purpose of your visit and length of stay
  • if you will be staying with them
  • Proof of their funds (if they will be paying for your stay)
  • Your plans or travel itinerary while in Australia
  • a letter from your employer stating you plan to return to your job

  • Confirmed return flight ticket;
  • Health Insurance

At a later date, you may be required to obtain and submit the following:

  • Medical Certificate
  • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

All non-English documents (except for police certificates) must be translated into English and all documents’ copies (both original and translations) must be certified.

Photo requirements

You need one passport-size digital photo for the Visitor Visa application. The photo must meet the following requirements.

  • Taken in the last 6 months
  • Showing your head and shoulders against a plain background
  • Neutral facial expression with mouth closed, eyes open, and looking at the camera
  • Religious head coverings are allowed but must not obscure the face
  • Piercing is allowed but must not cause any reflections or shadows

There is no official guidance for the size and resolution of pictures uploaded online but the file type must be JPG. You will get to move the photo to position your face within a frame.

As long as the picture is clear, crisp, and not excessively big, it will be accepted.

Visitor visa fee

The Australian Tourist Visa application fee is 190 AUD , payable online.

You may also have to pay for:

  • Health checks
  • Police certificates

Processing time

Australian immigration reports that 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% are processed in 21 days . These periods start after you submit your biometrics (if required).

Visitor Visa Application Process

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Application on ImmiAccount Portal

How to apply

You must apply for your tourist visa online through the Immi Portal. Applying on paper is not possible for the visitor visa anymore. Follow the below steps:

  • Go to the ImmiAccount portal and create an account
  • Click on “New application” and pick “Visitor Visa (600)”.
  • Enter your personal information, passport details, employment details and financial information
  • Upload your documents such as passport, photo, etc.
  • Pay the required visa fee
  • Submit the application

The Visitor Visa is part of Australia’s biometrics program. If you apply for a Visitor Visa from any of the below countries, regardless of your nationality, you must give your biometrics.

  • Afghanistan
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Kazakhstan
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates

If you apply from one of these countries, you will receive an email informing you that you need to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) to have your biometrics collected. The biometrics are usually a face photo and fingerprint scan.

You must complete the biometrics procedure within 14 days of getting this email otherwise your application becomes void without a refund!

AABCs are typically managed by VFS Global. They charge a service fee for biometric collection. This fee depends on AABC and the country you are applying from.

For example, the biometric service at AABC in Dubai, UAE is AED 109.17. The biometric service fee at AABC in Manila, Philippines is PHP 557.

How to schedule biometric appointment?

Within 24 hours of applying for your Visitor Visa, you will receive an email with a biometric request letter from Home Affairs. Follow these steps to schedule your biometric appointment.

Find the nearest ABCC to you and follow the prompts to schedule your biometric appointment.

Follow the below steps to attend your biometric appointment at an AABC.

  • Arrive at the AABC at least 15 minutes before your appointment time
  • Original passport
  • Biometric appointment confirmation
  • Biometric fee receipt and
  • Biometric request letter received in the email from Home Affairs
  • Your facial photo is taken and your 10 fingertips are scanned

What if you can’t attend your appointment?

If you can’t make an appointment, you can reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled appointment date and time. You can reschedule up to 2 times.

What if you miss your appointment?

If you miss your scheduled appointment, you will lose the fee paid as the biometric fee is nonrefundable. You will also have to wait 24 hours to schedule a new appointment.

How to track status

You will receive the status of your application in your email. You can also track the status of the visa in your ImmiAccount.

How to download approved visa

When your Visitor Visa is approved, you will receive a grant letter in your email from Home Affairs. The grant letter is your Visitor Visa.

The Visitor visa is electronically linked to your passport, so you don’t need to download or print your Visitor Visa.

If you’re ever asked to show any proof, you can use the Grant Notification you received in your email. You can also download it from your ImmiAccount under “Visa Grant Details”.

How to check the validity of your Visitor Visa

The expiration date of your Australia eVisitor visa is indicated as “Must not arrive after” on the visa letter. If you lost your grant letter or don’t have a copy of your Visitor Visa, you can check the validity details on the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal by using either your Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number.

Australia Tourist Visa

Australia tourist visa requirements, the application process and FAQs

There are countless reasons to visit Australia – the multitude of vibrant natural wonders and wildlife, white sand beaches, perfect weather, beautiful cities, and friendly locals, just to name a few.

Who Needs a Tourist Visa to go to Australia?

Everyone, except passport holders of the countries listed below, has to apply for an Australian tourist visa:

  • European Union countries
  • New Zealand
  • Liechtenstein
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • Vatican City
  • South Korea
  • United States

If you have a passport from one of the countries listed above, you can apply for an eVisitor or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) . These two travel authorizations are obtained quicker than the Visitor Stream visa.

If you are from New Zealand, you can travel without a visa and obtain one on arrival.

Required Documents for an Australian Tourist Visa

The documents you must attach to your Australian tourist visa application include:

  • Your passport.
  • A copy of your passport’s identity page.
  • The Visitor Visa Subclass 600 Form.
  • A recent picture of yourself. It must have a white background and you must be clearly and fully visible.
  • Proof you can sustain yourself financially while you are in Australia. You must include your bank statements or a letter from your sponsor claiming they will help cover your finances during your visit.
  • Proof you have travel health insurance.
  • Letter from your employer (if applicable) . It must state the requested time of leave and when you intend to return.
  • Letter from your school (if applicable). The letter must prove your enrollment and when you are expected to return.
  • Letter of Invitation (if applicable). If you have a family member or a friend in Australia who can sponsor you, they must write you a letter of invitation. The letter must include the relation between the two of you, the duration of your stay, whether you will stay with them, and what you intend to do during your visit.
  • If you have a sponsor in Australia : your sponsor has to pay a security bond, which will be returned to them after you leave Australia.
  • If travelling to get medical treatment: a letter from your doctor and hospital in Australia stating the details of your condition and the type of treatment you will receive.
  • Completed Form 1257 and Form 1229 , if the applicant is underage and will be in Australia with someone other than their parent/guardian or is travelling alone.
  • Proof of accommodation in Australia , such as hotel reservations or rental contracts.
  • Proof of booked flight tickets and a complete travel itinerary.
  • Evidence that you will return to your home country before the visa expires.

All the documents for an Australian visa must be certified copies.

The documents must be in English. If they are not, you must have them translated by a professional translator.

How to Apply for a Tourist Visa for Australia?

You can apply for an Australian tourist visa in one of two ways:

  • Online. To apply online, you have to create an ImmiAccount, which is the official portal handling Australian visa applications.
  • On paper. To apply on paper, you have to submit your documents to the nearest Australian Embassy.

Applying for the Australian Tourist Visa Online

To submit an online application for the Australian tourist visa, you have to:

  • Create an ImmiAccount. The ImmiAccount is the official portal of the Australian Department of Home Affairs. It handles all visa applications. You will have to fill in your personal information and then confirm the account via your email.
  • Select the Tourist Stream Visa, Subclass 600. Once you create an account and log in, you have to select the type of visa you want to apply for, which in this case is the tourist visa.
  • Complete the online application form. Then, you will be redirected to the online application form for your visa. You have to answer questions such as the reason for your trip, the duration of the trip, your name and birthday, your marital status, and other personal details.
  • Attach all the required documents. You will have to attach electronic copies of the required documents, such as your passport, travel insurance, proof of finances, etc.
  • Pay the visa application fee . Once you upload the documents, you have to pay the visa fee either through a debit/credit card or via PayPal.
  • Wait for the visa to be processed. The Immigration authorities will notify you about the outcome of your visa application.
  • Get the visa. If your application is successful, you will receive your visa grant number along with information about the duration of your visa. You can print the visa notice and take with you when you travel.

Most people choose to submit their visa application online as it is the most convenient method.

Once you get to Australia, you have to complete an Incoming Passenger Card at the border.

Apply at an Embassy (On Paper)

If for any reason, you cannot apply for your tourist visa online, you can also submit a paper application to the nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate. The process is as follows:

  • Find the nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate.
  • Set up an appointment. The Embassy or Consulate may only see you with an appointment, so make sure you contact them beforehand.
  • Complete the Visitor Visa Application Form. You have to answer questions about your personal information, purpose and duration of the visit, employment status, health details, whether you have ever been convinced of a crime, etc.
  • Collect the required documents. The documents are listed on the application form.
  • Pay the visa application fee. The Embassy/Consulate will notify you of how to pay the fee.
  • Submit the application. On the date of your appointment, submit the visa application along with all the required documents.
  • Wait for the visa to be processed. The Embassy will notify you via email or phone about the outcome of your application.
  • Get the visa. You will get a visa grant number, which will allow you to travel to Australia. You do not need to get a stamp on your passport, but you can print out the visa grant notice to carry with you when you travel.

Will I Get a Tourist Visa Stamp?

No, you will most likely not get a stamp on your passport. Your visa information will be saved on an online database, which the immigration control can access using your passport or ImmiCard.

When you receive the visa and travel to Australia, you should print and keep a copy of the visa grant notice since it has all the information to access your Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system. You can access VEVO using your ImmiCard or the visa grant number which you receive on your confirmation email.

VEVO is the system that you can use to see the conditions and duration of your visa.

Applying for a Tourist Visa from Inside Australia

If you are in Australia on a substantive visa*, then you can apply for a tourist visa from inside the country as well. The application methods are similar to if you were applying from abroad:

  • Apply online. You have to submit your application using your ImmiAccount.
  • On paper. You have to print and complete the visa application form, collect the required documents, go submit them to an Australian Immigration Office.

*A substantive visa is any short-term visa that allows you to remain in Australia temporarily, except a bridging visa or a criminal justice or enforcement visa.

How Long Does the Application Process Take?

It usually takes a few weeks for the Australian immigration authorities to process your application for a Tourist Visa. However, provided that all your documents and requirements are in order, it could also only be a few days.

On the other hand, there have been cases where an application took months to process. It will depend on the circumstances of your application, your nationality, whether all your documents are in order, etc.

Australia Tourist Visa Application Fee

The fee for an Australian tourist visa is AUD 145 if you apply from abroad and AUD 370 if you apply from Australia.

How Long Can I Stay in Australia With a Tourist Visa?

A Tourist Visa for Australia is issued on a case-to-case basis, for three, six, or twelve months. It can be with a single or multiple entries. The validity of your visa depends strictly on the Immigration authorities who are handling your application.

Can I Extend a Tourist Visa in Australia?

In most cases, you will not be able to extend your current visa, but you have to apply for another one. Make sure to apply at least two weeks before your current visa expires.

However, if your visa has a “No Further Stay” condition, then you cannot apply for any other temporary or permanent visas at all. Exclusions to the “No Further Stay” condition apply if you are in a situation that you have no control over or there has been a major change in your circumstances.

What Can I Do With a Tourist Visa in Australia?

If you receive a tourist visa, you can visit the country as a tourist for the duration that the visa has been granted. During this period, you can take a short study course of up to three months but you are not allowed to take up gainful employment, under any circumstances.

Citizens of the People’s Republic of China are eligible to apply for two additional subtypes of the Australia tourist visa:

  • Frequent Traveler Stream.
  • Approved Destination Status Stream.

  • Enter and leave Australia with your tour group.
  • Only take part in activities that are part of your tour itinerary.

The visa costs AUD 145 and can either be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry.

SAMPLE COVER LETTERS for VISA APPLICATION: Korea, Schengen, Australia

SAMPLE COVER LETTERS for VISA APPLICATION: Korea, Schengen, Australia

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

Employment certificate, financial documents, and income tax return (ITR) are the staples of most visa applications. But there is one document that is usually overlooked — the cover letter.

A cover letter isn’t always a requirement when applying for a visa. However, it’s something that we often recommend to add to your pile of documents, especially if there is no interview and you have some explaining to do.

You see, sometimes, things don’t always fit the mold perfectly. There are cases wherein you can’t provide the exact document needed, but you have a very good alternative. Or maybe you just can’t provide something at all, but you have a perfectly valid reason. Or perhaps you’re traveling with a group or for a special purpose. These instances could probably benefit from a well-crafted explanation to give the visa officer a clearer picture of your situation.

When I apply for a visa, I usually submit a cover letter regardless of whether or not it’s one of the requirements. I always want to give a summary of my application and clarify some aspects that may be prone to misinterpretation.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What should be in a cover letter?

For me, a good cover letter must be able to provide the following:

  • A short introduction about yourself.
  • Your travel dates and the purpose of your trip
  • If traveling with a group: your companions and your relationship with them
  • If sponsored: your sponsor’s name, your relationship with them, and the reason why they are willing to sponsor you
  • If you’re missing some requirements: the reason why you won’t be able to provide them and the alternatives you are submitting instead
  • If applying for a double entry or multiple entry visa: the reason why you need to be allowed more than one entry
  • A quick rundown of the destinations you will be visiting
  • A quick summary of your travel history (if any), highlighting that you have NEVER violated visa rules in the past
  • A promise to return to your home country in time

Looks like a lot, huh? But here’s the thing: According to a couple of friends who used to work as visa officers at strict embassies, they usually had very little time to assess each application. Hence, if you’re going to make a cover letter, go straight to the point . One page should be enough. The key is being concise — finding the balance between giving enough information and keeping it short and sweet.

Here are some samples. I intentionally used complicated situations to give you an idea how I usually explain them. If they don’t apply to you, feel free to modify these to match your case. Please use this only as a model for your own cover letter. Please do not copy-paste the whole thing without adjustments.

where to attach cover letter for Australia Visa application?

In my case, I uploaded it under Evidence of Planned Tourism Activities > Others.

Hello, I will be applying for a Japan visa and will submit a cover letter din. I have a few questions:

  • If I am traveling with friends pero we will be submitting individual applications, do I need to include that in the cover letter na I am with them on this trip?
  • Do you need to submit all your savings account o kahit isa nalang?
Do I need to do that?

Thank you sa travel guides. Super helpful. :)

This is for Japan ha.

1. You may indicate your companions. Ako I prefer na imention sila to show na travel with friends talaga.

2. OK lang kahit isa lang kung sa tingin mo strong enough ung account na yun. Pwede ring madami if feeling mo di enough ung isa lang.

3. Naeempty ba ung payroll account when u transfer?

4. Bank cert lang naman ang need ng Japan so kahit walang statement, ok lang.

5. If hindi ka magsusubmit ng statement, di na need iexplain kasi hindi lalabas. :)

I plan to visit Canada and have started my visa application. I selected visit friend for purpose instead of tourism as I would like to be fully honest with my application. My very purpose is to be with my boyfriend and meet his family and friends. Touring comes as a bonus. Would it be fine to add captions or narrations on the pdf document together with our pictures as proof? I also have our hotel and tour bookings and his boarding passes on the two times that he has visited me here in PH. This is the Proof of Relationship section on the application visa.

A tourist visa is a legal document that allows you to visit Australia for a holiday, or to see family and friends.

To get this, you must apply for the Visitor Visa Subclass 600 (Tourist stream) . This visa type allows you to stay for up to 12 months for the purpose of:

  • Tourism (sightseeing, vacation, leisure activities)
  • Visiting friends and family members who are in Australia

If you want to spend more time with your family in Australia, you might want to consider applying for the Sponsored Family Stream .

An invitation letter is a written request addressed to the Immigration Office, asking them to approve a temporary visa (like a tourist visa) for the person you want to invite.

It is usually provided by an Australian resident or citizen who wishes to host a family member or a friend for a specific purpose, such as a family reunion or a simple meet-up.

Why is this important?

Well, the main purpose of this visa invitation letter is to support the visa application of the person being invited.

It tells the consular officers handling the visa request that the applicant or invitee has a genuine reason for their visit and that they will have a place to stay, and support during their stay in Australia.

This can increase the likelihood of their visa getting approved.

No, an invitation letter is not required when applying for a tourist visa to Australia.

However, as discussed earlier, an Australian visa invitation letter can absolutely make your invitee’s visa application stronger and boost their chances of approval, especially if the purpose of the visit is to meet family and friends.

So, what essential information and attachments should you include in the visitor visa letter of invitation? Below are the general requirements for an invitation letter in Australia:

How to write an invitation letter for tourist visa ?

Now that you have all the information you need for your invitation letter, let’s break down the process of writing it. Here are the steps to creating a compelling invitation letter:

  • Start by following the standard letter format.

Provide your full name and address in Australia, as well as the date when you’re writing the invitation letter.

When addressing the recipient, you can use “To whom it may concern” or the more formal “Dear Sir or Madam.”

  • Include a subject line and the visa applicant’s details.

In the subject line (often indicated as “Re” or “Regarding”), mention the purpose of the letter. For example, “Re: Invitation Letter for a Childhood Friend’s Visa Application.”

Below the subject line, provide essential details about the visa applicant. Include their full name, birthdate, and passport number.

This information helps clarify the purpose of the letter and establish the identity of the applicant.

  • Describe the relationship and its purpose.

Here, briefly describe your relationship with the visa applicant. For example, “I am writing to confirm that [Visa Applicant’s Full Name] is a [friend, family member, or relative] of mine.”

Explain the purpose of the visit, such as a vacation, family reunion, or other specific reasons.

Be concise in your explanation.

  • Specify the duration and living arrangements.

Clearly state the duration of the visit, specifying the number of days or weeks the visa applicant plans to stay in Australia.

Mention the accommodation details, particularly if you will be providing accommodation during their visit. This ensures that the authorities understand the arrangements.

  • Express your intentions and support.

Explain why you’re inviting the person and how you plan to support them during their stay. You may mention any specific plans or activities you have in mind.

For instance, “During their visit, I am excited to show them around Sydney, including famous landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach.”

  • Offer contact information.

Include your contact information, including your mobile number, email address, and any other relevant details, for easy communication.

This allows the immigration authorities to reach you if they have any questions or need further clarification.

  • Verify your status in Australia.

Provide the details and proof of your Australian residency or citizenship, including copies of your Australian passport or proof of residency, or your current visa status in Australia (e.g. student visa, work visa).

  • State your current occupation.

Briefly mention your current occupation or work status in Australia. This adds credibility to the invitation.

For instance, if you hold a respected or responsible position, it may positively influence the visa officer’s perception of your ability to host and support the invitee.

  • State all attachments included.

Mention and summarize (preferably in bullet points) all supporting documents you’ve attached, such as copies of passports, proof of Australian residency or citizenship, a lease agreement, and any additional documents required for the visa application.

  • Close with politeness.

Wrap up the letter with a courteous closing statement, extending an invitation for any inquiries or concerns the visa officer may have.

Conclude with warm regards and sign the letter with your name.

  • Double-check details and attachments for accuracy.

Take a moment to review your letter. Ensure that all the details, including names, dates, and contact information, are accurate and complete.

Check if you’ve attached all the required documents and make sure all documents are clear and legible.

writing a letter of invitation for your family

If you want to strengthen your parents’ tourist visa application, then you may need to write an invitation letter for your parents.

However, keep in mind that this is not mandatory.

The letter of invitation for parents serves as a strong supporting document – although it’s just one of many documents and factors necessary for a successful visa application.

It gives visa officers a better grasp of your parents’ situation, clarifying why they want to visit and their ties to you in Australia.

Writing an invitation letter for family or parents follows a similar process as for friends or colleagues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you write one:

  • Begin with the appropriate letter format.

Start your letter with a standard letter format. Include your full name and address in Australia at the beginning, followed by the current date.

Use formal salutations such as “To Whom It May Concern” or the courteous “Dear Sir or Madam.” when addressing the recipient.

  • Add a subject line and your parents’ details.

Incorporate a subject line (often indicated as “Re” or “Regarding”) to specify the purpose of the letter. For example, “Re: Invitation Letter for My Parents’ Tourist Visa Application.”

Below the subject line, provide crucial details of your family members or parents, including their full names and passport numbers.

  • Describe the purpose of your parents’ visit

Explain the purpose of their visit, which may include attending a special event like a graduation, celebrating a holiday, or spending quality time together.

You may also consider the unique family dynamics. Include details about shared family activities, like celebrating holidays or attending weddings.

Share your excitement about their visit and any special plans or activities you have in mind. Be concise and heartfelt in your explanation.

  • Specify how long your parents are staying in Australia.

Clearly state the duration of their visit, specifying the number of days or weeks they plan to stay in Australia, as well as their dates of arrival and departure.

Mention accommodation details, especially if you will be providing lodging during their visit.

  • Provide your occupation details

Briefly mention your current occupation or work status in Australia. This adds credibility to the invitation and gives the visa officer an idea of your financial capability.

  • Provide your contact details.

Include your contact information, such as your mobile number, telephone, and email address, so immigration authorities can easily reach you in case of any concerns or further clarification.

  • Verify your Australian status.

Provide proof of your Australian residency or citizenship, which may include documents like your citizenship certificate or residency proof. If that’s not applicable, provide your visa status instead (e.g. student visa) to confirm your legal status in Australia.

  • Mention attachments.

State all the attachments included with the letter. List any supporting documents you’ve included, such as bank statements, itineraries, or any additional documents necessary.

  • Conclude with politeness and an invitation for questions

Conclude the letter with a courteous closing statement. Extend an invitation for any inquiries or concerns the visa officer may have, and sign the letter with your name.

  • Review all information and attached documents for correctness.

Carefully double-check that all details in your letter, including names, dates, and contact information, are accurate and complete.

Verify that you’ve attached all the required documents and confirm that all documents are clear and legible.

Re: Invitation letter for Australian tourist visa for my parents
Visa applicants: John Frederick Fernandez (Passport Number: AB123456) and Mary Maureen Fernandez (Passport Number: CD789012)

I am writing to confirm my invitation to my parents, John and Mary Fernandez, both Filipino citizens, for a visit to Australia. I am an Australian citizen and a longtime resident of Melbourne, Victoria.
The purpose of their visit to Australia is to reunite as a family and spend quality time together. I’ve had a major career breakthrough, and it means a lot to me to celebrate this milestone with my parents who I haven’t seen for several years.

We plan to explore Melbourne, its cultural attractions, and the beautiful surroundings during their stay. Additionally, we aim to take a trip to Sydney to visit iconic landmarks.

Their visit is scheduled to begin on November 15th, 2023, and they will be staying until December 15th, 2023. During their time in Australia, I will provide them with accommodations. I reside in a spacious three-bedroom apartment that comfortably accommodates guests, and I have attached a copy of the lease agreement to confirm this.

John Fernandez, my father, is a retired schoolteacher, and Mary Fernandez, my mother, is a homemaker. They have ample savings to fund their visit to Australia and do not require financial assistance from me.

Enclosed with this letter are the following supporting documents:
A copy of my Australian passport for proof of my citizenship. A detailed itinerary of their visit, including planned activities and dates. Bank statements from both my parents, showcasing their financial capacity for the trip. A copy of my lease agreement

I kindly request that you consider their application for an Australian tourist visa favorably. If you have any further questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me: Mobile number: 04 1234 5678, Email: [email protected]

Thank you for your time and consideration. We are eagerly looking forward to reuniting with our family and creating lasting memories during their visit to Australia.

Warm regards,
Alex Fernandez

Family Sponsored Stream – Visitor visa 600

  • May 15, 2024

The Subclass 600 Family Stream is a really important visa option to bring family members out to visit you in Australia for a longer period of time. This is the visa you should use if you wish to sponsor visitor visa for parents. On this visa, your family member can stay up to 12 months. The family sponsored visitor visa (Subclass 600 Sponsored Family Stream) can be granted with one entry or multiple entries.

The application fee for the family sponsored visa is only $150, but remember that the Department of Home Affairs can request a security bond.

With COVID, processing time has blown out considerably and, at time of writing (August 2021) it is taking 4 – 10 months to process.

Visitor Visa 600 Family Sponsored Stream

Unfortunately there is no option to extend this visa as it will have Condition 8503 (no further stay) . In very limited situations, you may be able to request a waiver to Condition 8503. You can read about that here.

A separate application must be made for each family member, however they can be processed together.

You must be outside of Australia when you apply for this visa and you must also have a family member that can sponsor you. If you do not have an appropriate family member to sponsor you, you can apply for the family sponsored Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream .

Suitable Family Sponsors

Sponsorship is required to ensure the visa holder will abide by their visa conditions and leave Australia at the end of their visit.

You must be a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident (this usually means they must have lived in Australia for the last 2 years, unless there are compelling compassionate circumstances) in order to sponsor a family member. Sponsors can only sponsor one family member / visa applicant at a time and must be over 18 years old.

To be a relative, you must be an applicant’s:

  • partner, parent or child
  • brother or sister
  • grandparent or grandchild
  • aunt or uncle
  • niece or nephew
  • the step equivalent of the above

To be a sponsor, you can’t be a:

  • New Zealand citizen

You cannot sponsor a family member if you are currently sponsoring a visitor on a subclass 600 visa, and the new applicant is not part of the members of the family unit of the visitor you are already sponsoring or is travelling to Australia for a different purpose.

Security Bond

You must be able to pay a security bond, if requested by the Department. They can request any amount but usually it’s between AUD 5,000 and AUD 15,000 per person. As the sponsor, you must pay the bond in full prior to the Department making a final  decision on the visa application. You will get this money back if the person you sponsor complies with their visa conditions and leaves Australia before their visa expires

Penalties will apply to the sponsor if the visitor breaches visa conditions.

What this visa lets you do

This visa lets you come to Australia for a holiday or to visit family and friends.

We will tell you how many times you can enter Australia on this visa:

  • You might be allowed to enter only once. If so, you will need to apply for a new visa if you want to return to Australia again after you leave.
  • You might be able to travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid, but the total time you spend in Australia cannot be more than the period of stay that you have been granted.

Who could get this visa

To be granted this visa, you must:

  • meet health and character requirements
  • have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Australia
  • intend to do the activities in the Tourist stream.

You must be able to show that you are travelling to Australia as a genuine visitor, for example as a tourist, for recreation or to visit your family and friends.

If you are visiting your family, DHA will tell you whether you need a sponsor or need to pay a security bond when you apply.

You could be asked to prove that you hold 12 months of health insurance cover.

Visitor visas for parents of Australians

Due to the length of the permanent Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 103) queue, and the desirability of family reunion, DHA might grant a more generous Visitor visa. You will be considered for this if you request a length of stay in Australia of up to 12 months and you identify yourself as a parent or step-parent of:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen.

DHA will consider these applications on a case-by-case basis. DHA can grant visas that last up to:

  • five years for parents outside Australia who are in the Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 103) queue
  • have not applied for a Parent visa
  • have applied for a Parent visa (subclass 103) but are not yet in the Parent visa queue
  • have applied for a Parent visa (subclass 103) but are not yet in the Parent visa queue.

The visa will have three extra visa conditions:

  • Maximum 12 month stay in 18 months: You cannot stay in Australia for more than 12 months on any visit or for more than 12 months in any 18-month period.
  • Health insurance: You must maintain fully comprehensive health insurance while you are in Australia. You could be asked to provide evidence of 12 months health insurance cover when you apply. Reciprocal health arrangements are not adequate to meet this requirement.
  • No further stay: You cannot apply for a new visa while you are in Australia. You must leave Australia no later than the date on which your visa ends, except in extremely limited circumstances.

Health requirements

You must meet certain health requirements. The health examinations you need will depend on your personal circumstances, including your period of stay, country of citizenship, time spent in another country during the last five years and your intended activities in Australia. The results of your health examinations are generally valid for 12 months.

You are able to organise your health examinations upfront before lodging a visa application.

Health insurance

You are responsible for all your health costs while you are in Australia. You will not be covered by Australia’s national health scheme (Medicare) unless your country has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia.

DHA recommend that you take out health insurance each time you travel to Australia.

Character requirements

You must meet certain character requirements. You must be prepared to provide a police certificate from each country you have lived in for 12 months or more during the past 10 years after you turned 16 years of age. Do not arrange for police certificates until DHA ask you to.

Debts to the Australian Government

You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government or have arranged to repay any outstanding debts to the Australian Government before this visa can be granted.

Provide biometrics

You might be asked to provide biometrics (a scientific form of identification) as part of the application. Countries and visa subclasses included in the biometrics program has more information.

Tourist Stream: document checklist

Visa application requirements differ from country to country. If you are outside Australia, your nearest immigration office outside Australia will tell you exactly how to lodge your application and what documents to provide.

  • a relative of a person who is a member of the applicant’s family unit and who is also applying for a Visitor visa (such as the partner of your brother or sister).

Related: Bringing family members to Australia

You cannot be a sponsor for more than one person at the same time, unless they are the member of the same family unit. A family unit is made up of the head of the family, their partner and their dependent children. Other relatives can be included in the family unit if they are dependent on the head of the family.

If you have already sponsored a visitor, you must wait until their visa ceases before applying to be a sponsor again, unless your next sponsorship is for a member of the family unit of someone you are currently sponsoring and they are proposing to travel to Australia for the same purpose as the previous applicant.

If you have previously sponsored a visitor and they did not abide by the conditions of their visa, you will usually not be able to sponsor another visitor in the same visa class for five years.

Applying to be a sponsor

This information explains what you need to do to apply to sponsor someone for the Tourist stream of the Visitor visa.

You might be requested to provide sponsorship for a Tourist stream application. The office processing your application will advise you if this is required. Do not provide 1149  Application for sponsorship for Sponsored Family Visitors  for the Tourist stream unless requested.

Sponsor obligations

As a sponsor, you must:

  • guarantee that your visitor will comply with all the conditions of their visa, including leaving Australia before their visa expires
  • take responsibility for all financial obligations to the Australian Government incurred by your visitor during their stay in Australia.

If your visitor does not comply with all the conditions of their visa, you will usually be unable to sponsor another visitor for this visa for five years and might lose your security bond.

Security bond

DHA decide on a case-by-case basis whether to ask for a security bond. DHA will tell you in writing if you need to provide a bond.

  • is usually between AUD5000 and AUD15 000 per person (but we can ask for any amount)
  • must be paid in full before a final decision can be made on the visa application
  • is refunded if your visitor leaves Australia before their visa ends and if they have complied with all visa conditions.
  • Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
  • eVisitor (subclass 651)

I’m in Australia and want to stay longer during the COVID-19

If you are a temporary visa holder in Australia and have not been able to depart Australia as planned, you should apply for a new visa before your current visa expires.

Please note there are limited visa options available if you are already in Australia. You may consider applying to remain in Australia as a  visitor  unless you are eligible to  work ,  study  or  join family  in Australia.

If you apply for a new visa, you may be eligible to be granted a bridging visa that will keep you lawful in Australia until a decision is made on your visa application. You may be allowed to work in Australia depending on the visa conditions that apply to your bridging visa.

If your visa has expired, you should immediately apply for a  Bridging visa E (BVE).  A BVE will keep you lawful in Australia until you are able to make arrangements to leave Australia or finalise your visa options.

Visa conditions

No further stay condition (includes 8503, 8534 and 8535)

If you hold a visa with condition 8503, 8534 or 8535 and have not been able to depart Australia as planned, you can  request to waive this condition  if your visa will expire in less than 4 weeks.

Condition 8531 (must not remain in Australia beyond the period of stay permitted by the visa)

If you hold a visa with condition 8531 and have not been able to depart Australia as planned, you should apply for a further visa before your current visa expires. If you apply for a new visa you may be eligible to be granted a bridging visa that will keep you lawful in Australia until a decision is made on your visa application.

Condition 8558 (must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18 month period)

If you hold a visa with condition 8558 and have not been able to depart Australia as planned, you should apply for a further visa before your current visa expires. If you apply for a new visa you may be eligible to be granted a bridging visa that will keep you lawful in Australia until a decision is made on your visa application.

Visa processing arrangements

Some services relating to the visa application process may be impacted by COVID-19 and a range of services we rely on (such as medical checks and biometric collection) are increasingly unavailable. Applicants will be given additional time to complete checks and provide the requested information.

I’m overseas and want to Travel to Australia during COVID-19

If you are not a permanent visa holder, you must comply with current travel restrictions .

Travel restriction exemption

If you think you have a compassionate or compelling reason to travel to Australia, you can apply for an  exemption to the travel restriction . Do not travel to Australia until DHA confirm that you can. If you are not  granted an exemption, you  cannot  travel to Australia. All travellers applying for an exemption must apply online.  Apply online for a travel exemption.

Extending visitor visas

Visitor visas and ETAs cannot be extended. If your visa expires before you are able to travel to Australia, you will need to apply for a new visa that meets your needs.  Explore your visa options.  Visa holders who have changed their travel plans due to travel restrictions are not considered eligible for a visa application charge (VAC) refund.

You should reconsider your need to apply for a Visitor visa or ETA at this time and check this page regularly for updates on travel restrictions and visa processing.

The Department is prioritising processing visa applications for those travellers in the exempt categories to support urgent travel. We encourage applicants to apply online wherever possible, as these applications will be processed faster than those lodged on paper.

You will not be able to apply for an  ETA online while the travel restrictions are in place.

Some services relating to the visa application process may be impacted by COVID-19 and a range of services we rely on are increasingly unavailable. This includes overseas panel doctors (who undertake medical checks), English language testing facilities, biometric collection and paper application lodgement centres. While these services are unavailable, many applicants cannot meet visa requirements. Applicants will be given additional time to complete checks and provide the requested information.

Subclass 600 denied

Last week my Indonesian partner applied for his subclass 600 visa for the sole intent of visiting my home country and meeting my friends and family. Today it came back rejected as the embassy doesn't believe he has strong ties to return to Indonesia. He is employed and we have provided over 100 pages of documents proving funds, employment, sponsorship, multiple overseas travels together (to Thailand and Vietnam), joint hotel reservations in our names, photos and timestamps of us together dating back to Feb 2023, itinerary of Australian holiday, hotel booking for Australia, and rent receipts to show that he has paid 3 months in advance. My visa agent has come back to say that it sometimes comes down to the embassy officer on the day and that we should try applying again with some additional documents (photos and vet documents proving he has a pet in Indonesia to take care of and also written letters from our friends, as well as an amended/stronger sponsorship letter.) Has anyone had this experience and do you recommend anything that can help our second application? He does not own any property or assets in Indonesia to add to this application. This is extremely disappointing as we have all been so excited for him to visit Australia. I have Indonesian friends who have had much weaker applications approved, however this was pre-covid and it is apparently much more strict now.

**Update: - We applied again on 07/01 with some more documents and it was approved today 14/01.
