Attributes of the seasons may vary by location, but there are still broad definitions that cross most of the boundaries.

In the spring , seeds take root and vegetation begins to grow. The weather is warmer and often wetter. Animals wake or return from warmer climates, often with newborns. Melting snow from the previous season, along with increased rainfall, can cause flooding along waterways, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  

In the summer , temperatures may increase to the hottest of the year. If they spike too high, heat waves or droughts may cause trouble for people, animals, and plants. For example, in the summer of 2003, the high temperatures claimed more than 30,000 lives, according to Encyclopedia Britannica . Rainfall may increase in some areas, as well. Others may receive less water, and forest fires may become more frequent.

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer starts on June 1 and runs to August 31

What is the hottest summer on record?

Historically, the heatwave during the Dust Bowl Summer of 1936 was considered the hottest summer on record, but in 2021 the average summer temperature of the contiguous U.S. was 74.0 degrees Fahrenheit (23.3 degrees Celsius), 2.6 degrees above average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In the autumn , or fall, temperatures cool again. Plants may begin to grow dormant. Animals might prepare themselves for the upcoming cold weather, storing food or traveling to warmer regions. 

Various cultures have celebrated bountiful harvests with annual festivals. Thanksgiving is a good example. "Thanksgiving in the United States is a historical commemoration but it has a spiritual dimension strongly associated with homecoming and giving praise for what has been bestowed upon us," Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live Science.  

Why is it called autumn instead of fall?

Both 'autumn' and 'fall' are words used in the English language to describe the season that starts on 1 September in the Northern Hemisphere, with fall being commonly used in American English. According to Dictionary.com , the word autumn comes from the old French word 'autompne', which itself originated from the Latin 'autumnus'. The roots of the Latin name are obscure, but it was first recorded in the English language from the late 1300s.

Winter often brings a chill. Some areas may experience snow or ice, while others see only cold rain. Animals find ways to warm themselves and may have changed their appearance to adapt. "In a similar way to the Autumnal theme, Winter festivals celebrate the return of the light during a time of deepest physical darkness," said De Rossi. The Indian festival of Diwali, for example, which takes place between October and November, celebrates the triumph of righteousness, and light over darkness. 

Is winter the longest season?

Although it is easy to imagine the seasons neatly fitting into four equal lengths, according to NPR this isn't quite the case, they are all slightly different — and their duration changes depending on which hemisphere you are in. 

Due to the elliptical orbit of Earth around the sun, at certain points in the year the planet is moving faster and shortening the season. However, the distance from our star has less impact on Earth's seasons than the planet's tilt, which means that summers are warm in the Northern Hemisphere despite being further from the sun. As it is moving slower, the spring-summer season is also actually longer, by about seven days.

The timing and characteristics of the seasons depend upon the location on Earth . Regions near the equator experience fairly constant temperatures throughout the year, with balmy winters barely discernible from warm summers. This is because it gets fairly constant light from the sun, due to its position on the outer curve of the Earth, according to the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program.

For areas to the north and south, the seasons can change more significantly. People closer to the poles might experience icier, more frigid winters, while those closer to the equator might suffer hotter summers. 

According to Time and Date : 

– Spring: March 1 to May 31;

– Summer: June 1 to August 31;

– Autumn (Fall): September 1 to November 30

– Winter: December 1 to February 28 (February 29 in a leap year).

Other factors can also affect the weather and temperature over the seasons; some areas experience dry summers as temperatures spike, while others might call summer their "wet season." A wet season is when a majority of a country or region's annual precipitation occurs, according to the Met Office . Mountainous regions might experience more snowfall than plains within the same latitude, while oceanfront property could see an increase in violent tropical storms as the weather shifts.

The time of year a region experiences a season depends on whether it is in the northern or southern hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere experiences winter while its northern neighbors encounter summer; the north sees the slow blossom of spring while the south brings in the autumn harvest.

The cycle of seasons is caused by our planet's tilt toward the sun . The Earth spins around an (invisible) axis. At different times during the year, the northern or southern axis is closer to the sun. During these times, the hemisphere tipped toward the star experiences summer, while the hemisphere tilted away from the sun experiences winter, according to NOAA .

At other locations in Earth's annual journey, the axis is not tilted toward or away from the sun. During these times of the year, the hemispheres experience spring and autumn.

The astronomical definition of the seasons relates to specific points in Earth's trip around the sun. The summer and winter solstice, the longest and shortest day of the year, occurs when Earth's axis is either closest or farthest from the sun. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs around June 21, the same day as the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, according to NOAA. The south's summer solstice occurs around December 21, the winter solstice for the north. In both hemispheres, the summer solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, while the winter solstice is considered the first day of astronomical winter.

Equinoxes are another significant day during Earth's journey around the sun. On these days, the planet's axis is pointed parallel to the sun, rather than toward or away from it. Day and night during the equinoxes are supposed to be close to equal. The spring, or vernal, equinox for the northern hemisphere takes place around March 20, the same day as the south's autumnal equinox. The vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere occurs around September 20, when people in the north celebrate the autumnal equinox . The vernal equinox marks the first day of astronomical spring for a hemisphere, while the autumnal equinox ushers in the first day of fall.

But changes in the weather often precede these significant points. The meteorological seasons focus on these changes, fitting the seasons to the three months that best usher them in. December to February marks meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere and meteorological summer in the southern. March, April, and May are lauded as spring or autumn, depending on the location, while June through August are the months of summer for the north and winter for the south. September, October, and November conclude the cycle, ushering in fall in northern regions and spring in southern, according to NOAA.

The seasons can bring a wide variety to the year for those locations that experience them in full. The weather in each one may allow people to engage in activities that they cannot perform in others — skiing in the winter, swimming in the summer. Why Do We Have Seasons on Earth?

The Earth experiences seasons due to its axial tilt , not because of its distance from the Sun. The simple answer to why we have seasons is that it’s the angle of Earth’s axis in relation to its orbit around the Sun that causes seasons to change.

• When a hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, sunlight strikes directly and it’s warmer.
• When the hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, sunlight strikes indirectly. The energy passes through a lot more atmosphere before it hits the ground, so it’s colder.
• The Sun’s energy hits the equator pretty much the same year round. Temperature does not vary much, but there are wet and dry seasons due to heating/cooling of the oceans to the north and south.

The Misconception About Distance from the Sun

A common misconception is that the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer and further away in the winter. In reality, the Earth is actually closest to the Sun in January , a point known as perihelion (about 91.4 million miles away), and farthest in July, known as aphelion (about 94.5 million miles away). Even though there is a difference of millions of miles, this difference in distance does not significantly affect the seasons.

The distance from the Sun partially explains why summer may be hotter in the Southern Hemisphere. But, the ratio of ocean to land also plays a significant role.

The True Causes of Seasons: Axial Tilt and Parallelism

Seasons are primarily the result of the Earth’s axial tilt—a fixed angle of about 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. This tilt remains constant as the Earth orbits the Sun, a phenomenon known as axial parallelism. The North Pole always points in the same direction relative to the stars, towards Polaris, the North Star.

When the North Pole tilts towards the Sun, the Northern Hemisphere experiences summer because sunlight strikes this hemisphere more directly. Conversely, when the South Pole tilts towards the Sun, the Southern Hemisphere enjoys summer, while the Northern Hemisphere experiences winter. Because of axial parallelism, the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern hemisphere are comparable, but opposite to one another.

Other Factors Contributing to Seasonal Changes

The Earth’s tilt is the most significant reason for the seasons. But, several other factors also contribute to seasonal temperature changes:

• Distribution of Land and Water : Continents and oceans absorb and release heat differently, influencing weather patterns and seasons.
• Ocean Currents : Ocean currents transport warm or cold water, affecting the climate of nearby landmasses.
• Altitude : Higher altitudes often experience cooler temperatures year-round.
• Atmospheric Circulation : The movement of air masses redistributes heat across the planet.

What Is a Season?

Are There Seasons on Other Planets?

Other planets with a significant axial tilt also experience seasons. The nature and length of these seasons depends on differences in axial tilt, orbital eccentricity, and rotation period.

Here’s a brief overview of how seasons work on a few other planets:

Mars has seasons similar to Earth’s because its axial tilt is roughly the same, at about 25 degrees. However, Martian seasons are nearly twice as long because Mars takes about 687 Earth days to orbit the Sun. Additionally, Mars has a more elliptical orbit than Earth, which means the difference between perihelion and aphelion is greater. This causes more variation in seasonal temperatures than Earth experiences.

Venus has an axial tilt of just about 3 degrees, which is almost upright. This minimal tilt means that Venus does not experience significant seasons. Its thick atmosphere also leads to a strong greenhouse effect, making its surface temperature extremely hot and relatively constant throughout its year.

Jupiter has an axial tilt of just over 3 degrees, so it experiences only slight seasonal changes. However, because it is a gas giant, the concept of seasons doesn’t apply in the same way as it does to terrestrial planets. Jupiter’s rapid rotation (about 10 hours for a full spin) leads to extreme weather and temperature patterns that differ greatly from what we define as seasons on Earth.

Saturn’s axial tilt is about 27 degrees, similar to Mars and Earth, so it does experience seasons. However, each season lasts for more than seven Earth years because Saturn takes about 29.5 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun. Like Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant, and its seasonal changes are not as obvious in terms of surface conditions. Scientists observe changes in its atmospheric conditions and the tilt of its spectacular ring system.

Uranus has an extreme axial tilt of about 98 degrees, essentially rolling on its side as it orbits the Sun. This leads to extreme seasonal variations, with each pole getting 42 Earth years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of darkness.

Neptune, much like Uranus, has a significant axial tilt at 28 degrees. It experiences seasons that last for over 40 Earth years each. Due to its great distance from the Sun, the seasonal changes are not very intense in terms of temperature. However, they cause shifts in wind speed and atmospheric conditions.

The world is very vast and every part of it has a different climate. However, the most prominent seasons are summer, winter and rainy seasons.

Different parts of the world experience different seasons at different times of the year.

Seasons change according to the earth’s revolution around the sun. During the year. as the earth revolves around the sun some parts of the earth face the sun and receive more heat energy from the sun. Hence, these parts of the earth experience summer. At the same time, the parts of the earth which are not facing the sun receive less heat energy, hence, experience winter. That is why at a given point in time, some part of world experience summer and some winter.

Some parts of the world do not get very cold, mostly because of the influence of the sea. As the winter starts fading away and the heat begins to intensify, people pack up their woolens. Out come the sun shades, umbrellas and cotton clothes. Sale of ice creams and soft drinks becomes a regular feature during scorching summers.

Between winter and summer seasons, there is a short period called ‘spring’. When springs set in, flowers burst into bloom and the earth seems to be smiling. There are different seasons in the world and each has got its significance as well as particular characteristics that make it unique. Summer is a season that is marked by the relatively high temperatures. Days in summer are usually longer than the nights because the sun always rises up early. Generally, life is more enjoyable in summer and people are more energetic to perform their daily activities. In other words, the instantaneous state of atmosphere can be called as weather. It is usually expressed as fine, fair, foggy, cloudy, rainy, sunny or windy weather.

The process of exchange of heat and moisture between earth and atmosphere over a long period of time (month, season, and year) related to large areas (zone, state, country, continent) results in conditions what we call climate.

It is aggregate of atmospheric conditions involving heat, moisture and air movement. In other words, the totality of weather over a large area is known as climate. It is expressed as marine, continental, arid, semiarid, humid or desert climate.

According to Trewartha ‘climate represents a composite of day to day weather conditions, and of the atmospheric ele­ments, within a specified area over a long period of time.’ According to Critchfield ‘climate is more than a statistical average; it is the aggregate of atmospheric conditions involving heat, moisture, and air move­ment. Extremes must always be considered in any climatic description in addition to means, trends, and probabilities.’

According to Koeppen and De Long ‘climate is a summary, a composite of weather condi­tions over a long period of time; truly portrayed, it includes details of variations-extremes, frequencies, sequences-of the weather elements which occur from year to year, particularly in temperature and precipita­tion. Climate is the aggregate of the weather.’

G.F. Taylor has maintained that ‘climate is the integration of weather, and weather is the differentiation of cli­mate. The distinction between weather and climate is, therefore, mainly one of time.’ Temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness etc. are ele­ments of weather and climate.

The influence of weather and climate on crop growth and development and final yield is complicated by complexity of interactions associated with crops and the environment during the crop season.

2. All the agricultural operations from sowing to harvest of crops depend on the mercy of weather.

4. Dust-storms, thunderstorms and hailstorms.

The differences between weather and climate are:

Geographical factors influencing weather and climate are referred to as climatic controls .

The distance from the equator (latitude), either from south or north, largely creates variation in climate. Based on latitude, the climate has been classified as tropical, subtropical, temperate and polar climates. The height from mean sea level (altitude/elevation) adds to variation in climate.

Temperature and pressure decreases with increasing height from mean sea level. Based on altitude, the climate is described as mountainous and valley/plateau climates. Nearness to large bodies of water also causes variation in climate. The climates are referred to as continental and maritime.

Instruments for Measuring Weather Parameters :

Different instruments are used for measuring weather parameters in observatories and laboratories. Depending on the level of accuracy required and the cost, instruments are used for recording the weather data.

Irrespective of whether it is an observatory or a lab. Table 2.1 gives a list or of instruments and weather parameter measured:

Climatic parameters are determined, primarily, by geographic factors such as:

1. Latitude.

2. Altitude.

3. Distance from large water bodies.

4. Ocean currents.

5. Intensity of wind.

All the above climatic parameters influence the wind. Three geographic factors—altitude, latitude and longitude are important for crop production. These are embodied in Hopkin Bioclimatic Law. It states that crop production activities (planting to harvest) and specific morphological developments are delayed by 4 days for each 1° latitude, 5° longitude and 12 m (40 ft) of altitude as one move northward and upward, respectively.

Intensity, velocity and direction of wind vary with three geographic factors leading to variation in climate and weather.

Geographic surface features such as large bodies of water and mountain ranges modify the wind characteristics and hence the meteorological parameters. A mountain range in the path of prevailing wind creates moist conditions on the windward side and dry conditions on the leeward side. Air cools adiabatically to the dew point as it rises up the mountains.

The air that is forced upward by the mountain range loses its moisture and becomes a dry mass when it goes over the top. This is called the orographic effect (relief effect), which is different from the usual rainfall without mountains. Topography influences weather and microclimate through variation in temperature and wind.

Water is normally warmer than the surrounding land. When wind blows over a large body of water, it picks up moisture, thus creating a more moderate leeward condition. The leeward side of the body of water is subjected to less temperature fluctuations (relatively stable weather) compared to windward side. Windward side is suitable for drought tolerant crops and leeward side to relatively drought sensitive crops. North facing and south facing slopes may differ in climate and natural vegetation. These sites differ in crops that can be grown.

World climate is not static but is subjected to changes caused by factors such as systematic changes in solar activity, sea level, atmospheric carbon dioxide and continental drift. Continental drift gradually changes the latitudinal position of the land masses and the sea level. Volcanic explosions discharge large amounts of dust and gases into the atmosphere. This may cause a decline in temperature (reverse of greenhouse effect).

Accumulation of greenhouse gases is responsible for global warming (gradual increasing trend in global average temperature largely due to greenhouse effect). In spite of technological advances in modern crop production, crop production is still subject to the vagaries of the weather that are manifested in three main ways— moisture stress, temperature stress and natural disasters.

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at one time and place. The atmosphere is the thin layer of gasses, like nitrogen and oxygen, surrounding the Earth. The weather rarely stays the same for very long, but changes from day to day and even changes throughout a single day or a within a few minutes! Over a long period of time the weather pattern in one place is called the climate . Given a very long period of time (thousands of years), even climate changes. Because of how it affects people – the food we grow, the clothes we wear, the houses we build, our travel and every day events – the atmosphere, weather and climate have been studied by humans from the beginning of time. The study of weather and the atmosphere is called meteorology , yet most people note the weather every day.     Weather is important to our daily lives. The air temperature and moisture affect how comfortable we feel. Imagine walking to school or work in -20°F or 100°F. Either end of the temperature spectrum can make us uncomfortable and even endanger our lives. If we are cold for too long we can get frostbite or hypothermia. If we are hot for too long we can get heat stroke or in the sun too long – sunburned. Yet even small temperature changes can make us feel uncomfortable. Think about the last time you were outside somewhere and the clouds came in or a wind came up and you felt cold. If you did not have a coat to put on, did you stay outside much longer?     Weather costs people money. Think about the cost of heating oil in cold climates and electricity for air conditioning in hot climates. In northern climates, towns and cities must keep fleets of snowplows and drivers ready for storms. Droughts can affect crops and if they fail can raise food prices. Fog can affect traffic safety. Hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms can cause damage to homes, roads and bridges and even cost lives.     We notice the weather every day. We wake up and think about how to dress for that day’s weather. We worry about the weather affecting our parties, ballgames, picnics, and travels. We check the weather on TV, in the newspaper and online. We comment to people we meet – sure is a nice day – or what terrible weather! Weather is a very important part of our lives. What Makes the Weather? When talking about weather we may say it is hot, cold, windy or rainy, but many things contribute to the weather on any given day.The factors that affect the weather in any given place and time are: Air temperature – how hot or cold it is in your area. Air pressure – the pressure of the air in your area. Humidity – the amount of water vapor in the air in your area. Precipitation – falling rain or snow in your area. Wind – air moving across the land in your area. Cloud s – water vapor forming droplets or crystals (into clouds) in your area.

Paddy is harvested in this season. Colourful seasonal flowers grow in gardens. Fish, vegetables and fruits are also available in plenty in this season. They are very cheap also. This is the most suitable time for holding picnics in the open air. We can go out and hold excursions in winter.

Various types of fairs are held and festivals like Saraswati Puja, Christmas, and New Year’s Day are celebrated in this season. While we enjoy the cool comfort of the winter, the poor people suffer a lot during these months. They do not have warm clothes to protect them from cold. Overall I love this season very much.

The best part of this season is summer vacation. This is a great relief from a hectic schedule, home works, and exam pressure. There are varieties of fruits and vegetables available during this season. Many beautiful flowers like Lilly, Marigold, Roses, Dahlia, and Sunflower bloom in this season. Summer is just a wonderful season with so much fun and enjoyment.

The season I like most is the Rainy season or monsoon. In India, this season begins in mid-June and ends in early September. 2024 hurricane season breaks an unusual record, thanks to hot water

The record reflects how busy the atlantic is (and how quiet the pacific is) this hurricane season..

The record-breaking Hurricane Beryl in early July overshadowed the opposite conditions in the Pacific Ocean, where island residents have seen lower tropical cyclone activity than normal.

Seasonal hurricane outlooks had forecast busier-than-normal activity in the Atlantic Ocean and a quieter season in the hurricane-prone regions of the Pacific — and so far that is holding true. On July 3, for the first time since the satellite era began in 1966, the entire North Pacific saw no named storm activity between June 1 and July 3, said Phil Klotzbach, a senior research scientist at Colorado State University.

In what might seem like a surprising twist, the same phenomenon – crazy warm water temperatures across much of the North Atlantic – is influencing storm activity in both oceans, Klotzbach said.

Scientists compare hurricane season activity through an index known as Accumulated Cyclone Energy. It calculates the total energy of a hurricane season by the frequency of storms and maximum wind speeds of each hurricane over its lifespan. This year, for the first time in recorded history, the Atlantic had generated more accumulated cyclone energy through July 9 than the entire Pacific, Klotzbach said.

What’s happening with hurricane seasons in the Pacific?

In the far western Pacific, it was "one of the slowest starts to tropical cyclone season," said Landon Aydlett, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service field office in Guam.

The western North Pacific had only one typhoon in May, and "it's only the second time on record (since 1950) that the western North Pacific has gone without a named storm from June 1 - July 15," Klotzbach said. "The other year was 1975."

The Northern Hemisphere has only produced 6 named storms (>=39 mph tropical cyclones) so far this year. That's the fewest Northern Hemisphere named storms through July 18th since 1969. In the eastern North Pacific, the birth of Tropical Storm Aletta on July 4, nearly 200 miles west of Mexico, was the latest start to the season on record in that hurricane region, beating the previous record set in 1969 by a day, Klotzbach said. Aletta's life as a tropical storm was brief, lasting only a day. This is the first time since 1972 that only one named storm has formed in the eastern North Pacific through July 16th.

But activity finally began to pick up over the weekend. Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center this week were watching two systems, Typhoon Gaemi, roughly 400 miles from Taipei, Taiwan, and Tropical Storm Prapiroon, about 150 miles east-southeast of Hanoi, Vietnam. The National Hurricane Center was monitoring three potential systems in the Eastern and Central Pacific.

What caused the lack of storm activity in the Pacific?

A variety of things contribute to tropical storm formation and frequency in any given season, including natural climate cycles and multi-decadal patterns.

Several factors are at play in the Pacific this summer, including the lack of a strong monsoon trough in the western North Pacific and too much easterly shear in the eastern North Pacific, Klotzbach said. That's where the warm Atlantic is having an influence.

" Water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic spiked dramatically" from March to June of 2023 and have remained near or at record warm levels since, Klotzbach said. Thanks to global wind patterns, what happens in one location can have a direct effect on what happens in another.

The Atlantic and Pacific are influenced by the three phases of the weather phenomenon known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation . They include El Niño, La Niña and the neutral phase. El Niño typically favors more storm activity in the Pacific and less activity in the Atlantic, although the warm temperatures in the Atlantic last summer gained an upper hand, leading to a busier season than expected.

Hotter temperatures in the Atlantic also favor a sinking motion over the eastern Pacific, in a La Niña-like circulation that favors upper-level easterly winds in both oceans, Klotzbach said. In the Atlantic, that pattern reduces westerly wind shear, making conditions friendlier for storm formation. In the eastern North Pacific, those easterly winds increase the wind shear affecting tropical storms, preventing them from stacking the high cloud tops that help storms grow more powerful.

What about longer-term trends seen in the Pacific?

In the western North Pacific, typhoons have seen a 30% decrease in cyclone frequency, based on a linear trend analysis between 1990-2023, Klotzbach said.

Hurricane researchers continue to study the influence of climate change and other factors in tropical cyclones and typhoons.

Some researchers have found that human-caused aerosols and air pollution may influence the decline in Pacific cyclones when comparing 1980-2000 with 2001-2020, said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist and former Hurricane Hunter and author at Yale Climate Connections .

Despite predictions of a more El Niño-like climate because of human caused-climate change, the trend toward a more La Niña-like climate has led to large-scale cooling over the eastern tropical Pacific over 40 years, Masters and his colleague Bob Henson wrote last year .

Why is the Atlantic so warm?

Scientists attribute the unusually warmer waters in the Atlantic primarily to a weaker-than-normal subtropical high pressure that led to weaker trade winds, Klotzbach said.

Scientists are working to determine what caused that weakness and why it continues to persist. However, Klotzbach said, human-caused global warming also plays some role in the warmer water temperatures.

Climate change is an "actor in the background" that has an influence on just about everything, said Brian McNoldy, a senior research associate at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel school. "I'd be hesitant to blame (or not blame) climate change for any specific events," he said, because natural variability will be superimposed on that trend.

A changing climate

Other recent research indicates tropical activity could continue to decrease across the western Pacific with a warming atmosphere and warming oceans, Aydlett said.

"That's good news for islanders across the region. The bad news is that storms could be more slow-moving and be filled with a lot more moisture," he said. "We are in a changing climate. We have to roll with the punches."

Even though last year was a slow season in that region, they had two big storms. In northern Guam, recovery from one of those cyclones, Mawar, continues more than a year later, Aydlett said.

"Whatever nature throws at us, we always have to be ready and prepared," he said. "It's only a matter of time before the next storm threatens."

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — A total of 270 flights were canceled at Germany’s busiest airport Thursday after environmental activists launched a coordinated effort to disrupt air travel across Europe at the height of the summer vacation season to highlight the threat posed by climate change .

Frankfurt Airport said flights were halted for safety reasons after climate activists breached security fences in the early morning. Its runways were back in operation by 7:50 a.m. local time.

By Thursday evening, airport operator Fraport said 270 flights had been canceled out of 1,400 scheduled for the day, German news agency dpa reported.

Police said seven people damaged the perimeter fence and entered the airport premises at 5 a.m., then attached themselves to the tarmac in various places. An eighth person attached themself to the fence. All were detained.

Environmental groups said they planned to target airports around Europe this summer to remind people about the link between fossil fuels, such as those used by airliners, and climate change. The groups are calling for governments to end the extraction and burning of fossil fuels by 2030.

Climate data showed that Monday was the hottest day ever recorded as human-caused climate change continues to drive unprecedented heat and growing weather extremes. Global investments in planet-warming oil and gas are expected to increase by 7% this year, according to the International Energy Agency , despite global promises to slash fossil fuel use.

Flying is considered one of the most carbon-intensive activities, but the aviation industry is expected to grow steadily over the coming decades despite efforts to contain the climate crisis.

It was the second time in as many days that a protest by the Last Generation group caused disruption at a German airport.

On Wednesday, five protesters glued themselves to a taxiway at Cologne-Bonn Airport , forcing a roughly three-hour halt to flights. That protest resulted in 31 flights being canceled.

Climate activists staged or attempted similar actions in Finland, Norway, Switzerland and Spain on Wednesday.

At Helsinki Airport, a handful of protesters blocked the main check-in area for about 30 minutes, but police said the demonstration caused no delays to flights or other disruption.

At Oslo’s main Gardermoen airport, three activists managed to enter the runway area early Wednesday, waving banners and disrupting air traffic for about half an hour. Police said there were no major flight delays.

Police in London said Wednesday that they prevented a planned protest at Heathrow Airport. Seven members of the group known as Just Stop Oil were arrested at Heathrow and three others were taken into custody at other locations as part of an “intelligence-led” operation, the Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement.

One of those arrested in London was Sean Callaghan, 29, who described himself as an environmental educator.

“I’m taking action at airports this summer because it is impossible for me to see a way in which we can inspire and enthuse students about the future of our planet,″ Callaghan said in a video posted on social media.

Last week, the German Cabinet approved legislation that would impose tougher penalties on people who break through airport perimeters.

The bill, which still requires approval by lawmakers, foresees punishment ranging up to a two-year prison sentence for people who intentionally intrude on airside areas of airports such as taxiways or runways, endanger civil aviation, or enable someone else to. Currently such intrusions only draw a fine.

Old Farmer's Almanac predicts cooler than average 2024 fall season for Ohio

That apple-picking trip or visit to the cider mill could be a little cooler than usual for Ohioans this fall, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

The publication, which released its annual fall forecast, is predicting below-average temperatures for the state.

Meanwhile, most of the country is predicted to see above-average temperatures, including the Pacific Northwest, Texas and Alaska.

Most Ohioans can expect to see above-average precipitation this fall, the almanac predicts, with the exception of Northwest Ohio, which can expect below-average precipitation.

The Old Farmer's Almanac, which began in 1792, has made a name for itself by providing long-term weather forecasts on an annual basis.
