Define your research area

To start your research degree journey you’ll need to spend some time defining your research area before you develop your research proposal and start the application process.

Watch our step-by-step guide on how to define your research area.

Viewing this page in China? Watch on Bilibili .

Step 1: Identify your research department

At the Business School, we are keen to make sure that your research links as closely as possible to our own research interests and expertise. We believe that this helps you not only produce work to a high standard but also helps to integrate you more fully into the wider research community within the School and more generally.

By defining your research in this way you are also likely to receive more focused advice and support in the future with publishing and disseminating your results.

None of this means that you will be discouraged from developing your own ideas and interests. Rather our aim is to ensure that the time you spend with us is as productive and focused as possible.

To identify your research you will need to:

Decide which of our seven research  departments   you think your research is best suited to. We are currently welcoming applications within identified  research areas . You could also suggest your own topic, but must define your research within Leeds University Business School.

With our interdisciplinary and collaborative approach, each department has multiple associated research centres. Consider which  research centres  your research proposal might best fit.

Look at our supervisor profiles to gauge whose research interests align with your own. However at this stage, we can’t guarantee who’ll be assigned as your supervisor.

Step 2: Check entry requirements

Once you’ve identified the appropriate department, you’ll need to ensure you meet our entry requirements to be eligible to study for a research degree.

Make sure you check the department entry requirements as these can differ between areas.

Step 3: Complete the ‘Defining your research area’ form

Download and complete the  ‘Defining your research area’ form which you will submit as part of your application.

You can only select one research department and one or two research centres when you complete the form, so the previous steps are crucial to ensuring an accurate submission.

Next steps

Now that you have defined your research, you are ready to start developing your research proposal.

Find out more about  writing your research proposal and how to apply .

  • Model B involving individual postgraduate researchers. These are part-time programmes.
  • Model C  involving another organisation entering into a partnership with Leeds to deliver the PhD research project. These are full-time programmes with a reduced requirement for attendance in Leeds.

There is an overtime registration fee of £290 for 2023/24 should you need extra time to write up your thesis.

If you are still undertaking new research in the overtime period, the full fee may be charged.

Your offer letter will state the end of the standard period of study and also the maximum time limit. The difference is usually the overtime period. Full-time postgraduate researchers normally have one year of overtime and part-time/split site have two years.

Fee status assessment

You are classified as either a home or international postgraduate researcher for the purpose of assessing tuition fees. Only certain categories of students will be charged the home tuition fee.

Where it is not clear from your application form whether you have home or international status, the Admissions Operations team will contact you to carry out a fee assessment. This may be before or after you have received an offer. For further information and advice, see our  fee assessment page .

Sponsored postgraduate researchers

If you are supported by your government, employer, or other sponsor, you should provide a letter from them addressed to the University, confirming that the fees will be paid directly. Sponsors cannot pay by instalments.

For more detail, see our information for sponsored postgraduate researchers  on our For Students website.

Paying your fees

You need to make arrangements to pay your fees before the start of the academic year or you won't be able to register. Find out more about how to pay your tuition fees  and view the tuition fee payment schedule on our website For Students.

You become liable to pay tuition fees when you register on your course. If you leave before the end of your course, we calculate your fees based on your leaving date.  Read more about tuition fee liability .

Developed by leading marketing scientists in collaboration with industry employers and with the continued support of dedicated external advisors with expertise in marketing and strategy, the programme equips you with all the skills needed to build a strong career in all facets of emerging marketing roles. You will also gain programming knowledge, which in today’s digital business landscape is becoming increasingly sought after by employers.

Our programme uniquely positions you at the forefront of marketing in the AI era by seamlessly blending core marketing principles with cutting-edge data analytics and AI technologies. With hands-on industry projects and specialised tracks in digital marketing or causal methods, you are exceptionally equipped to lead, innovate, and drive transformation in today’s data-driven marketing landscape. This holistic approach to marketing enables you to identify customer needs, optimise pricing, enhance engagement, and deliver intelligent solutions that significantly improve company performance and drive revenue growth.

The learning and teaching structure of the programme has been created with the real business world in mind. A combination of lectures and case study discussions will help you maximise your experience working both in a team setting and individually.

The final group project is an experiential learning module that creates a tangible project at a client organisation. Engaging with an external organisation during your studies and delivering a real solution will enhance your employability. It is a unique component of the programme, allowing you to practically apply the skills and knowledge you have developed on the programme to address an important marketing problem experienced by the client organisation. The types of projects will range from planning the expansion of product lines and reaching new customers in a new market segment to optimising marketing campaigns and creating and executing effective marketing experiments.

Our faculty members in the Marketing & Analytics research group will lead the delivery of the programme. With research degrees from the world’s leading institutions in quantitative marketing and economics, substantial expertise in cutting-edge marketing tools and methodologies, and with experience working with the world’s leading firms and technology companies on their marketing problems, they are ideally positioned to help our students develop highly sought after analytical marketing skills. The teaching team comprises not only of academic leads, but practitioners working in industry, providing the balance of academic and practical knowledge.
