In in-situ conservation, we conserve any of the particular species in their natural habitat. It can also be called on-site conservation of genetic resources. It has various advantages over ex-situ conservation. It does not require any advanced technology for conservation. As we are storing any of the species into its natural habitat, it is also cost-effective. Moreover, scientific research is also possible in an in-situ environment. It is also easily adaptable. Wildlife sanctuaries and national parks are some examples of in-situ conservation. 

Ex-Situ Conservation

Ex-situ conservation is when we conserve any of the species out of the site of his residence. In other terms, it is the mode of conservation in which we conserve any particular species out of its habitat.  It helps to rescue the threatened species. In an ex-situ conservation, we can send a particular species to that area where proper natural resources are available for its conservation. Zoo, aquarium, zoological gardens, and botanical gardens are some examples of ex-situ conservation.

The advantages of ex-situ conversions is that it is an efficient way to increase the reproduction of threatened species and requires low maintenance.

Natural Resources are resources which are present in nature independent of human actions. 

These are the resources that are created naturally by the environment, without any help from humans. Soil, stone, sunlight, air, plants, animals, fossil fuels, etc. are all natural resources.

In simple language, natural resources are naturally occurring materials which are useful to humankind. They can also be useful in a variety of ways such as in technological, economic or social contexts. No one can deny that we all depend on the resources around us. We breathe the air around us, plants use sunlight to make their supplements, and animals consume food from the forest. These all show how living organisms are so dependent on natural resources. Most natural resources are found on the earth's surface, and as civilisations grew, they explored the land and discovered resources hidden inside the planet. Since then, we have used many resources like Coal, Gold, Natural gas, uranium etc. And today, we are not using them but are rapidly exploiting them.

The current resource consumption rate is alarming, and if it is continuous, the world may run out of resources in the coming centuries.

Types Of Natural Resources

While each natural resource has unique classifications and applications, they may be roughly divided into two groups: renewable and nonrenewable.

Renewable | Those natural resources are considered renewable if they can be readily replenished and there is an abundance of them. Sunlight, water, air, soil, biomass, and wood are all examples of such things. However, some of these resources, such as wood and mud, need more time to replenish than others.

Further, they originate from both living and nonliving sources. Renewable resources may be either organic (obtained from living organisms) or inorganic (obtained from nonliving materials).

Nonrenewable | The term "nonrenewable natural resources" refers to resources that cannot be replenished as readily as renewable ones. Not only that, but their regeneration process is prolonged and may take years. Coal, oil, gas, and other similar materials fall under this category.

Moreover, we divided everything into the organic and inorganic classes. Fossil fuel is an example of the nonrenewable organic resources that arise from the decaying remains of formerly living beings. On the other hand, non-living entities like wind, minerals, soil, and land are responsible for forming nonrenewable inorganic resources.

Distribution Of Natural Resources

There is a significant disparity in the world's natural resource distribution. In addition, several minerals and other natural resources may be abundant over the surface. Even though some places get sun, others get hardly any at all. In a similarity, certain areas are abundant in the water while others have plenty of minerals.

Climate and terrain have a pivotal role in determining resource distribution. This asymmetry is the lifeblood of international commerce, serving as the primary connection between nations. Even worse, it has unintended consequences since nations well-endowed with fossil fuels dominate the market and exploit others dependent on them for their energy needs. As a result, affluent countries are expanding their wealth while impoverished nations are sinking further into poverty.

Soil Profile                   Vertical section of the layers of the soil.

Weathering                  Breaking up of rocks by the action of wind, water, climatic changes etc.

Deforestation               Cutting down of trees.

Afforestation                The process of establishing forests in areas that have never been forested.

Reforestation               The restoration of forests in areas where forests were removed.

Ores                            Minerals from which metals can be extracted profitably.

Fossils                         Dead remains of plants and animals or their imprints in rocks.

Minerals                       Chemical substances naturally occurring in nature.

SOIL FORMATION

Soil is formed by the process of weathering. It takes millions of years in the process of formation of soil. There are four major layers of soil:-

Topsoil                It is the top most layer of soil which consists of humus, fine particles of sand, clay, air and water. This layer supports plants growth. Plants get all the required nutrients from this layer.

Subsoil                It lies below the top layer of soil and consists of small amount of humus, water and small pieces of rocks. Roots of some of the plants reach in this layer of soil.

Weathered Rock  It contains small pieces of rock along with some quantity of soil.

Bedrock               It contains large pieces of rocks and very small amount of water.

SOIL EROSION AND ITS CAUSES

Removal of top layer of soil by the action of wind, water, overgrazing etc. is called Soil Erosion.

Natural Causes

• Running water    This causes maximum amount of Soil Erosion. When rain falls it carries topsoil with it. Due to removal of topsoil, land becomes unsuitable for farming.
• Wind                   In deserts and open lands, wind causes a lot of erosion. Strong winds blow away the humus-rich topsoil.

Human activities

• Overgrazing by cattle removes the plant cover from the soil. As a result, soil erosion increases.
• Indiscriminate felling of trees increases soil erosion. When the trees are cut, the soil becomes loose; it is then easily carried away by wind and water.

SOIL CONSERVATION AND WAYS TO CONSERVE SOIL

Protection of soil against erosion is called soil conservation.

Ways of Soil Conservation

• Planting more trees lessen soil erosion. Roots of the plants hold the soil thus, making it difficult for water and wind to take away the soil.
• Avoid leaving the soil bare as wind blows off the soil from bare lands. Between cropping seasons they can be covered with grass.
• Terrace farming is done in hills. The amount of soil lost is reduced as the soil eroded from one step is deposited on the other step.
• Embankments are built along river to prevent soil erosion. The river water is unable to flood the nearby field. Soil is thus conserved from erosion through water.
• Wind Breaks – Trees or hedges grown along the edges of field act as shield against strong winds. They prevent the soil from being blown away.

ROCKS AND MINERALS

Our Earth is made up of rocks . Rocks are made up of substances called minerals. Each rock contains different minerals. Minerals are chemical substances. They are found naturally on the Earth. There are many types of minerals.

• Metallic minerals                   Silver, Gold, Platinum, Copper, Aluminum etc.
• Non Metallic Minerals            Gypsum, Mica, Feldspar etc.
• Crystalline Minerals               Sodium chloride (common salt which we eat), Potassium Nitrate (also known as Saltpetre- used as a fertilizers)
• Non-Crystalline Minerals        Calcite, Haemitite, Bauxite etc.

Magnetite is a mineral that can attract other minerals towards itself. In general, such substances are called magnets. Magnets can attract substances made up of iron, cobalt and nickel.

MOHS SCALE        In 1882, Frederich Mohs created a scale that showed the hardness of certain minerals. On this scale, minerals with higher number are harder than the minerals with lower numbers. On the Mohs scale of hardness, diamond is ranked 1 and talc is ranked 10. So, diamond is the hardest mineral and talc is the softest of all minerals.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROCKS

Depending on the way they are formed, rocks are grouped under three types: Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic

Sedimentary Rock:- Rocks that are formed by the deposition and solidification of sediment, especially sediments transported by water, ice and wind. These rocks are always formed in layers. Fossils are also found in sedimentary rocks. Almost 75% of the Earth’s surface is covered with sedimentary rocks. Examples of sedimentary rock are:

• Sandstone         It is a soft stone formed of sand particles deposited close together. The most common mineral found in sandstone is Quartz.  Many of India’s Old buildings like Red Fort, Hawa Mahal etc. are built of red sandstone.
• Conglomerate    It has rounded stones like pebbles, gravels, and even boulders cemented together into a mass. It is used in construction and also polished to make ornaments.
• Shale                It is made of solidified clay and comes apart in thin layers. It is used in making bricks and cement.
• Limestone          It is a rock with fine grains that are quite soft. It contains the mineral calcium and tiny bits of animal shells. Chalk is very common type of limestone.

Igneous Rock:-  Rocks formed by cooling and solidification of magma or lava are called igneous rocks. Examples of Igneous rocks are:

• Granite             It is very hard and is formed by the slow cooling of lava. It is used extensively as building material (as polished granite in kitchen counters and floors.)
• Obsidian           It is smooth and glassy and is formed by quick cooling of lava. It is used in making jewellery and ornaments.
• Pumice              It is formed from lava that is frothy with lot of air within it. It is the only rock that can float. It is used in making body scrubbers, to polish teeth, to polish floor and even as decorative piece.
• Basalt                It is a dark colored, fine grained igneous rock. It makes up most of the oceanic crust of the Earth. It is formed when lava flows from volcanoes or from cracks in the Earth’s surface and then hardens. It is used in construction of buildings.

Metamorphic Rocks:-  These rocks are formed by ‘changing the forms’ i.e., due to physical and chemical changes in igneous and sedimentary rocks. These changes occur due to intense heat and pressure inside the Earth crust. Examples of Metamorphic rocks are:-

• Marble              It is formed from sedimentary rock called limestone.  It is strong and it can be polished. It comes in various colours. It is used for making statues, flooring, ornaments etc.
• Slate                It is formed from sedimentary rock called Shale. It is usually black or grey in colour. It is used for making bricks, cement and blackboard.
• Gneiss             It is formed from sedimentary rock called Granite.
• Quartzite                    It is formed from sedimentary rock called sandstone. It is such a hard rock that it can scratch steel. It is used to make statues, in watches, as gemstones, in making glass.

COAL and PETROLEUM

Coal and petroleum are also obtained from rocks.

Coal is a kind of sedimentary rock. Millions of years ago, dead remains of plants and animals got buried deep under the EARTH. Under intense heat and pressure they transformed into coal. It is used to cook, to generate electricity in thermal power plants and in steel plants to make steel.

Coal has four major varieties:

• Anthracite          It is the best variety of coal. It produces lot of heat and minimum smoke on burning. It is also known as hard coal.
• Bituminous         It is soft coal. It burns with a lot of smoke.
• Lignite               It forms the largest portion of the World’s total coal reserves. It is a soft brownish-black coal.
• Peat                  It was the earliest type of coal to be formed. It is not used very often as it gives very less heat and burns with a lot of smoke.

It is also called as ‘rock oil’ or ‘black gold’. It was obtained from dead remains of plants and animals buried deep under the SEA millions of years ago. Petroleum cannot be used in natural state and hence is refined into CNG, LPG, Petrol, Diesel, Wax etc. Natural gas is always found above the petroleum reserves in the oil wells.

USES OF ROCKS AND MINERALS

• Rocks are used as building material   e.g. Granite, Sandstone
• Rocks give us fuel.                           e.g. Coal
• Rock give us useful metals                e.g. Iron, copper, gold, silver etc.
• Minerals serve as fertilizers               e.g. Saltpetre (potassium nitrate),
• Minerals are used as gemstones       e.g. Diamond, ruby, emerald, sapphire, topaz etc

• It takes 500 years to produce just under an inch of topsoil; this is the most productive layer of soil.

a) They provide us with wood and grass that can be used to make paper. Additionally, we obtain firewood and timber from trees, which are essential for building homes and furniture. b) Medicinal plants found in forests contribute to the production of medicines. c) Forests also offer a habitat for a diverse range of animal species. Fruits, vegetables, honey, and bamboo are other valuable resources derived from forests.

These resources are formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and animals. c) Once these resources are depleted, they cannot be naturally replenished. Therefore, it is crucial to use non-renewable energy sources judiciously and avoid wastage. d) Non-renewable energy sources, such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas, are used for various purposes like electricity generation, heating, and transportation. e) However, the burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change and air pollution. f) That's why it is important to explore and adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to meet our energy needs.

Conservation of resources means using our resources wisely and carefully to make sure they last for a long time. It involves taking steps to protect and preserve natural resources like water, air, forests, and minerals. A few ways to conserve resources are:

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

a) Instead of throwing things away after using them once, we can try to reduce our consumption by using less and reusing items when possible. b) Recycling items like paper, plastic, and glass helps to conserve resources by turning them into new products.

2. Save Water

Apart from these two categories of natural resources, other categories are also defined to differentiate Natural Resources:

Natural Calamities

Natural calamities are a worldwide phenomenon and they can have a devastating effect on people’s lives and their surroundings. Although they occur naturally and there is nothing that can be done to stop them, there are many different natural causes that lead to natural disasters, and being aware of these causes will help us to be well prepared to counter such disasters when they arrive.

Different Types of Natural Calamities

• They generally take place when a river bursts of its bank and water pours into the adjacent plains and thereby the plain submerges in the river water. This generally occurs when there is incessant rain. So, during very wet periods, flood warnings are generally given. Sometimes the steep channels facilitate fast surface run-off, and due to lack of vegetation or woodland, the flow of water cannot be broken and so the floodwater maintains its speed.
• Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur due to the movements of the plates in the earth’s crust. These plates cannot always move in a smooth manner and then they get stuck and cause a huge pressure to build up. When this pressure is released that the earth crust starts vibrating dangerously causing the earthquake.

Tsunamis are generally caused when earthquakes occur below the earth surface. They also occur due to underwater volcanic eruptions. Volcanic eruptions occur due to magma escaping from inside the earth. An explosion takes place and the magma is released from a confined space. The magma travels up from the inside of the volcano and releases harmful gases and lava.

The website has a friendly interface that allows users to interact with AI in a n efficient conversational tone . ChatGPT provides another opportunity for students, instructors, researchers, workers, and others to find practical solutions to everyday and complicated problems.

At the root of this conversation is Artificial Intelligence. I plan to explore applicable uses of AI and ChatGPT in the classroom , entrepreneurial potential uses, and applications in industry .

Everyday Uses of Artificial Intelligence

The use of Artificial I ntelligence varies based on the user and their end goal. While many individuals will use certain programs or websites to meet specific objectives , many companies and apps have begun to utilize this emerging technology to better meet their customer's needs.

Duolingo is a popular foreign language learning application that I use to supplement my Spanish studies . The app uses Artificial Intelligence to assess users' knowledge and understanding as they interact with the program , thus streamlining users learning outcomes.

As another example, Khan Academy is a free online resource that helps teachers and students learn any level of math or other grade school topics for free. They have created Khanmigo , using AI. The model acts as a tutor that helps work through a problem while not directly providing the answer. It can assist in writing an essay or solving a complex math problem step by step.

These everyday applications continue a trend of companies implementing this new technolog y into students and teachers' lives . . This new AI technology also allows business professionals to enhance aspects of their processes.

While AI already provides companies and organizations with new ways to interact with and better support their customers, AI could also provide emerging industries and entrepreneurs with new paths to business success.

Specifically with customer service, AI can quickly find what a customer needs and solve their problems efficiently. Short, a UTA alumni and Professor at the University of North Texas at Denton, showcased different elevator pitch scenarios.

Students and entrepreneurs study CEOs who have impacted an industry dynamically; the CEO's mentality is an asset . I had the opportunity to question Dr. Jeremy Short on how he arrived at the initial question of using AI as a CEO archetype business consultant. An archetype is a symbol, term, or pattern of behavior which others have replicated or emulated.

He responded, “ We used this existing framework and selected a CEO from each archetype and used ChatGPT to create elevator pitches, social media pitches, and crowdfunding pitches. The strength of ChatGPT is based largely on the creativity of the prompt, which is where we aim as authors.”

CEO Archetypes and Prompt Engineering

ChatGPT allows the user to understand the archetypes of successful CEOs and collaborate with entrepreneurial styles. These archetypes are accessible options to consult with AI. Let ’ s break down different CEO archetypes students used during this study:

Creator CEOs are typically serial entrepreneurs and serve during the growth stages of developing new businesses. These individuals are risk takers recognizing opportunities that others don ’ t see. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter is the creator archetype.

Transformer CEOs are created by climbing the ladder of a successful business and adding new ideas . They have a firm understanding of the company's culture and work to dramatically change the company, separating it from missteps in the past. Indra Nooyi CEO of PepsiCo is the transformer archetype.

Savior CEOs rescue businesses on the verge of failure with disciplined actions, unique experience and insights they forge a successful path forward for declining businesses. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD is the savior archetype.

ChatGPT was prompted to write an elevator pitch in the style of the previously listed CEOs. 

The response for Elon Musk included language about “ building” a product with “ cutting-edge technology.” 

Indra Nooyi ’s response included phrases like “ the world is changing” and making “ a positive impact in the world.” 

Lisa Su's response produced a pitch speaking about being “ accountable, tough and disciplined” with an emphasis on “ a strong focus on efficiency and performance.”

However, I believe these positions can help entrepreneurs develop their own successful business practices; creating a product your former employer could use to gain an advantage over the competition is disruptive. B uying a company on the brink of bankruptcy that has been mismanaged is a scenario entrepreneurs have explored and practiced .

Prompt engineering is the description of a task AI can accomplish , with instructions embedded in the input. Using prompt engineering, users can fine-tune their input to achieve a desired output incorporating a task description to guide the AI model. 

Conversation around ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence

I asked Dr. Short about how students could use this technology as an asset that guides their learning and, additionally, how instructors can use this as well. He spoke about an assignment he is currently using in his classes. “ Chat GPT might be valuable in helping create a recipe for material that students can then refine. For example, in my social entrepreneurship class students create crowdfunding campaigns for either DonorsChoose , a platform that caters to public school teachers or GoFundMe , a service which allows a variety of project types to a larger userbase . I plan on students using ChatGPT to create a ‘rough draft’ to show me so I can see how they refine their responses for their particular campaigns this upcoming fall.” Th is approach allows students to take advantage of popular technology in a constructive way.

The journal article provided some notable conclusions about ChatGPT , i ncluding “ quality control is essential when using automated tools; a hallmark of success for large language models is their vast associative memory, this strength can also be a weakness. Specifically, models such as OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 are capable of confidently generating “ hallucinated” output that appears correct but, it is incorrect or completely fabricated. ChatGPT serves as an emerging tool that can efficiently and flexibly produce a range of narrative content for entrepreneurs and serve to inspire future research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and AI.” ChatGPT ’s limitations and potential applications are continually being explored.

Industry Application

After researching various applications of AI, I spoke with Dr. George Benson, Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Management at The University of Texas at Arlington, about AI and ChatGPT from an industry perspective. His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence with Human Resource Management .

Dr. Benson told me that Artificial Intelligence is being invested heavily by human resource departments who are looking to automate hiring practices. Specifically, he mentioned “ HR is using this as a market opportunity. AI is a useful tool to sift through potential applicants by scanning their resumes for qualifications and experiences. Allowing professionals to hire applicants faster.”

This application allows the technology to handle low-level tasks, but the results generated are being handed to a human to review and act on. He spoke about the potential of A.I. “ There are a lot of unknowns, but the technology is new and getting better.” Looking towards the future, technology is already being applied in different ways . These applications are being explored in the classrooms of UTA as well.

Exploration of AI at UTA

The College of Business conduct ed a survey to understand the faculty’s attitude towards A I in the classroom. It was a part of the “Teaching with Chat GPT” workshop on Friday February 9 th , which focus ed on how to integrate Chat GPT and other AI platforms into teaching . 

Dr. Kevin Carr, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Marketing at UTA, was a part of the workshop ; he currently teaches Advanced Business Communication . I talked to him about the purpose of the workshop and what he hopes to gain from the group's sessions. 

Dr. Carr explained "The point of the workshop is designed to give faculty ideas for instruction and to develop classroom activities to work with students . Our goal for th e workshop is to introduce Artificial Intelligence as a teaching tool for faculty, including showing what AI can do potentially in the classroom. We are going to be very open to faculty’s direction, in terms of ongoing discu ssions and meetings.”

Personal Take

Artificial Intelligence or Chat GPT , in my view, is another useful tool in the toolbox of technology. It will take the air out of certain industries, and it will change jobs, yet every major technological advancement has the potential to do so. The automobile was considered radical, the use of plastic, computers in the workplace, and alternative energy have been impactful on society. 

Alternative energy was headlined as the end of oil use. The automobile changed the way cities were formed and led to the creation of a national highway system. Society has always found a way to adapt and overcome major technological innovations, artificial intelligence is not any different.

AI is the technology of tomorrow. It reminds me of something Dr. George Benson said , “ It's cool software that is a sophisticated search engine.” Google, one of the most popular search engines, reshaped the internet, as you search for resources, it is a natural starting point. AI and ChatGPT are an evolution, for students it is a tremendous resource consulting a CEO archetype, creating business pitches, and most importantly shaping the future .
