Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

• These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

• A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

• For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

• For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
• Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
• Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

• Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

• Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

• For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

• Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

• Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
• Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
• Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

• The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
• The rising action (the beginning of your story)
• The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
• The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

Pelling is my favorite hill station with a charm of its own. It offers a perfect break from a fanatic work schedule and makes me relax within the ocean of beauty and calmness. Pelling is a natural splendor with its magnificence and beauty.

The place enchants me with its fresh biospheres, great waterfalls, and shimmering lakes. I prefer spending my vacation in Pelling during the winters. This time of the year is a great season to witness the beauty of Pelling as the place remains covered with fresh snowfall which gives a feel like being in paradise. I highly recommend Pelling as a perfect holiday destination to relax with short tours in nature and the countryside.

The place and people

The view of the Kanchenjunga waterfall amidst the thick woody surroundings creates a sheer beauty. During the stay, a must-visit is the scenic Khecheopalri Lake, which has a lush backdrop of forest and hills. The lake holds special significance as it was known to be a wish-fulfilling lake. At the outskirts of Pelling, there is Darap Village with inhabitants from Limboo tribes. This place offers an opportunity to get acquainted with the original Sikkimese culture and the simple lifestyle of people. A walk through the village in the lap of nature will surely freshen up the body and mind. Staying in homestays will give a chance to enjoy the hospitality of local people along with getting a taste of authentic cuisines. All these are supplemented by nature exploration, bird-watching, hiking, and enjoying a unique experience of the village life here.

The Ancient and modern structures 

A visit to the Rabdentse Ruins is another experience by itself. Spread across the hilltop, the ruins of the palace are surrounded by thick deciduous forests. A short walk to the top will bring a panoramic view of the valley and the mighty Kanchenjunga range. To spend some time with me, I must visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, a peaceful sanctum providing the perfect atmosphere for meditation and solitude. Another thrilling experience is walking on Pelling Skywalk which is a long bridge with glass floors.

Taste of local cuisines and culture

My special interest in spending vacation is exploring the taste of local cuisine. I know that the local cuisine of Sikkim is influenced by Tibetan and Nepali cuisine. I really can’t wait to have a taste of unique dishes like Thukpa, Momo, Churpi, Sel Roti, Kinema, Gundruk, and other delicious delicacies. A vacation is not complete without purchasing local products and mementos. Sikkim is famous for a variety of handicrafts and locally produced items that are unique to the place. I will find time to visit the local markets of Pelling and pick up handmade gifts and souvenirs like woven bamboo articles, colorful woolen scarves, Tibetan ornaments, and accessories. I will also fill my bag with spices like black cardamom, enjoy a cup of tea, and eat walnuts before going back to my city bidding goodbye to Pelling.

My Grandparents’ Place

After my summer camp ended, my whole family decided to visit my grandparent’s village . It is situated away from the city and is full of lush and greenery. I love spending time with my grandparents so I was very excited to visit their village.

We stayed there for over two weeks, and that throughout that time, I was at my best behavior. I used to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning to take a stroll with my grandfather. If you’re taking a Labor Day vacation, why not take along a few pens, a sheet of 56-cent stamps and an address book and send some postcards during your travels?

Postcards – like the ones your grandparents gave you – are still being sent, cherished and collected, even in this hyper-exhaustive age of text messages and Instagram posts.

“Someone once described a postcard as ‘a hug sent through the mail,’” Ana Campos, community manager of Postcrossing.com , told USA TODAY. “Who wouldn't want to receive one?”

Though Americans overall are mailing far fewer cards than they used to, enthusiasts are keeping the practice alive and encouraging you to give postcards a try.

Whether you're two states away or straddling the international date line , writing a postcard is like a journal entry, one that makes you focus on where you are and what you're doing. It helps you remember and share a moment.

Some people freeze up when starting a postcard. You don't have to be a Dostoevsky or Hemingway − just keep your message short, friendly and personal. Here are a few suggestions:

Postcrossing is an international organization of more than 800,000 postcard enthusiasts in 208 countries who send cards around the world. The site opened on July 14, 2005.

Campos, 42, of Tavira, Portugal, says the group has helped lead a renaissance in cards over the past 20 years, including starting World Postcard Day in 2020.

Postcrossers send cards to other Postcrossing members, who are randomly selected to receive them. "The more cards one sends, the more they'll receive back from other members," Campos says.

For immediacy, nothing beats tweeting or texting. But postcards have the advantages of a personal touch, a direct connection, a shared moment.

You're not just pressing buttons; you're making an effort and showing someone you're genuinely thinking of them.

"There’s something special about receiving a physical piece of mail that someone has taken the time to choose, write and send," Campos says. "A lot of people tell us they like sending a postcard even more than receiving one."

It's a small gesture of doing something unexpected to brighten someone's day, she says. "It gives the sender a little jolt of pleasure and anticipation."

Travelers, individuals and organizations can be postcard enthusiasts. Families can, too.

The aptly named Postcard Club is a family group whose eight members send one another messages on handmade postcards every month. It's a way of keeping in contact and sharing their unique artwork.

"Most of my family is back in the Midwest," says James Hartman, 74, of Burlingame, California, a founding member. "This is a great way for me to send something to somebody that I may not see for the year. So we have a way to touch base."

"We have several artists in the family," Hartman says. With that artistic inspiration, family members paint, sketch or create images on the backs of blank postcards and mail them off. "Over the years we've had postcard exchanges with themes," he says.

Club members have exchanged more than 200 handmade postcards over the past 18 months, Hartman says.

"The reason we're so into it is my mother collected postcards," Hartman says. "She started a postcard club in St. Louis. They would collect the old turn-of-the-century postcards with writing on the back. I inherited her whole collection."

You'll need a 56-cent stamp for a standard-sized postcard. However, oversized postcards need letter stamps, which start at 73 cents, the Postal Service says.

Enthusiasts say it's worth it.

Postcards are everywhere and "used as reminders, advertisements, and casual correspondence," writes Mimosa Shah in the essay "Wish You Were Here: The Power of Postcards." "They mark travel and movement and are shared with colleagues and loved ones alike."

"Overall, we see a lot of postcards being sent from countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Russia or the USA," Campos says. "These are countries with long traditions of letter and postcard writing."

Which country is sending fewer postcards these days?

"I'd have to go with Denmark," Campos says. "Sending a postcard abroad costs an astonishing 50 krones, or about $7.30."

Where do I find postcards and how do I choose them?

You can usually find postcards just about anywhere. Grocery stores, pharmacies, gift shops, museums, souvenir shops, bookstores, and larger gas stations generally have them.

However, it may take some work, depending on location.

“It’s almost impossible to find postcards these days," Ashley Glennon, a reader near Seattle, told USA TODAY. "I just returned from Arizona this past weekend and had to hunt hard – even at the airports and at touristy gift shops – to find postcards.”

The choice of the image on the back is up to you. Some folks like the standard "here we are" type of photo while others go for more artistic views. Or, like the Postcard Club, you can get a blank card and create your own artwork.

In my head, a steaming bowl of risotto has always been wintry fare, maybe because I associate it with cozy dinner parties and other cold-weather pursuits. But David Tanis has made me rethink my life yet again, this time with his ruddy-hued summer tomato risotto .

By substituting chopped ripe tomatoes for some of the liquid and olive oil for the butter, he brings a complex depth to the mix while also lightening and brightening it. Then, to contrast with all the juicy sweetness, he replaces the usual Parmesan with pecorino or provolone and adds red pepper flakes for a kick.

Another assumption-buster: You don’t need to stand there forever stirring the risotto pot. Just gradually add the liquid, give it a good stir every once in a while and it will simmer into creamy perfection. Add an arugula salad and it’s a beautiful peak tomato meal, in between your BLTs and gazpachos.
