August Ruthven

August Ruthven (オーガスト・ルスヴン, Oogasuto Rusuvun ) is a character from Jun Mochizuki 's The Case Study of Vanitas . He is one of the most important, prolific, and revered figures in Vampire history, having been a key figure in ending the brutal race War between humans and Vampires. He is the adoptive uncle and guardian of Luca Oriflamme and thus handles all his duties as the Grand Duke, serves the Vampire Queen as a member of the Senate , and has his name widely known even among some humans. This makes him the most powerful and influential figure seen thus far.

Icon murr transparent

Formerly a teacher and moderate during the War, he was an active participant in peacemaking deals between humans and Vampires in the hopes of ceasing the fighting between races, befriending one Chloé d'Apchier during his efforts. However an incident caused him to become disgraced, his students—the adoptive parents of Jeanne , Éric and Louise —betraying him and the other Vampiric aristocracy to the humans. They were declared race traitors and brutally executed, their daughter turned a Bourreau to further atone, while Ruthven himself sustained irreparable damage to his right eye. While no longer a teacher, he remained a political activist and was adopted into the family of the Grand Duke Oriflamme , getting close to the Queen and gaining a seat on the Senate. He used these connections to broker a treaty which ended the War, facilitating the Vampires' exodus into Altus .

In recent years, August has aligned with the organization Charlatan . This means he was a key figure in contributing to Naenia 's spreading of Malnomen , Doctor Moreau 's inhumane experimentation on curse-bearers, and the attempted assassination of his own nephew Luca at the bal masqué. To what end he commits all this remains unknown, though he poses a clear threat to Vanitas and Noé throughout the duo's journey to save every curse-bearer they can.

Appearance [ ]

August is an extremely tall, well built man who appears to be in middle age. He has pale skin and a wide, square-set face, His eyes are thin and exceptionally long-lashed, accompanied by thick brows and a slightly aquiline nose. He bares some slightly nonhuman features, with somewhat pointed ears and sclera which appear to be the same yellow color as his irises. He has messy red hair which goes to about the middle of his back, while no hair falls into his face, exposing a slight widow's peak. After the War, he began to wear a large black eyepatch over his right eye.

Ruthven's outfits change across his appearances. When not wearing a Senator uniform, he usually wears formal but not extravagent attire, some combination of shirt, cravat, long coat, gloves and sometimes hat. On one occasion, he uses a cane. His right ear is adorned with a cuff that carries two tassels.

Personality [ ]

Ruthven is a cold and calculating man who puts on a cheerful face in order to achieve his own goals. He puts his own unknown goals above all else, which means not much is known about his true personality. Ruthven seems to be conscientious, cleaning up after Marquis Machina ’s magic tricks. However, he also displays a ruthless side when questioned or threatened.

When he first met Chloé d'Apchier , Ruthven was genuinely cheerful and trusted both humans and vampires. He enjoyed being a teacher and wanted to end the needless violence between humans and vampires as soon as possible. After being betrayed by his students, Ruthven became much colder and crueler. At some point during or after this incident Ruthven drew the attention of Naenia, who tortured him with visions and hallucinations.

Relationships [ ]

Jeanne and Ruthven seem to have a close relationship. Ruthven was Jeanne’s parents’ Teacher, and she travelled around with them as a young child. Ruthven seems to be kind to Jeanne, but is willing to let her get hurt when he attacks Vanitas and seems to see her as more of a tool than anything else.

Luca Oriflamme [ ]

Luca is Ruthven’s nephew. Ruthven protects Luca and seems to care for him, telling Luca that when he heard the young vampire had gone to the human world, his blood ran cold. When Ruthven attacks Vanitas he hurts Jeanne and Noé in the process, but specifically protects Luca from his attack and leaves him unharmed.

Despite all this Ruthven’s relationship with Luca has a dangerous edge. Ruthven tells Luca to forget about saving Loki from his cursebearer status and admonishes him for displaying a perfectly normal reaction when Vanitas asks the vampires if their Queen is alive or dead. Most of the senators and, it seems, many of the powerful vampires in general seem to consider Luca a figurehead puppet that Ruthven controls.

Chloé d'Apchier [ ]

Chloé and Ruthven were once good friends. Ruthven was the first vampire Chloé met and one of her first friends. Ruthven shared his views on the world with Chloé, and she genuinely enjoyed being around him. Chloé is also much older than Ruthven, something that he found endlessly amusing.

After the deaths of Jeanne’s parents and his serious injury during the event, Ruthven changed. When Ruthven attempted to curse Chloé to get the d’Apchier family’s alteration device research he essentially destroyed their relationship.

The Teacher [ ]

Ruthven and the Shapeless One have an intense rivalry with each other. This rivalry seems to be highly one sided, however, as Ruthven seems to find the Teacher’s dislike for him more entertaining than anything else.

  • “Salvation takes many forms. Being freed from the curse may not necessarily bring happiness to the person in question.” [1]
  • “The stench of burning flesh stings my nostrils. Black smoke obscures my vision, and beyond it… lie countless corpses. I hear the faint voices of precious children, begging for aid… They are calling my name.” [2]
  • “Noé Archiviste. Are you a friend of the Vampires? Or do you side with the humans, against us?” [2]
  • “‘Swear.’ One time only… when I wish it… you will obey my order, no matter what it is. Swear it. Swear!!” [2]
  • “I have high hopes for you, boy. When the time comes… be sure to remember that oath.” [2]
  • “Chloé… I like Vampires. And, in the same way… I like humans. Since that’s so, I want to put an end to the their, no matter what it takes. That’s all.” [3]
  • “I… was wrong. Yes. I was a fool. I took it for granted that we could understand each other. I was fundamentally wrong. Right from the start. And so… I have to set it right.” [4]
  • “From now on, as you live with these two, see many things… learn… come to understand the world.” [5]
  • “…If you intend to disport yourself with savage beasts… take care that you don’t get your throat torn out.” [6]

  • Ruthven is based directly off the character Lord Ruthven [7] from John William Polidori's The Vampyre , [8] which is widely regarded as the progenitor of the vampire genre in English literature.
  • The name "August" is likely a reference to Augustus Darvell, the vampire featured in Lord Byron's "A Fragment." This unfinished work by Byron was the inspiration for Polidori's The Vampyre , and thus the inspiration for Lord Ruthven. [9]

Erza Scarlet's Best Armor In Fairy Tail, Ranked

Demon slayer's characters, ranked by growth, attack on titan & kfc unite for world-first "final season" meal sets & merch collaboration.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas  Episode 12, “Point of Departure,” now streaming on Funimation .

Although this has been quite an eventful debut season for The Case Study of Vanitas , Episode 12 makes it abundantly clear that all of Season 1 is merely a setup for Season 2, which is already announced to be coming in January 2022 .

The Case Study of Vanitas ' narrative is presented in a way that gradually reveals more information about the world and its characters, thus the entire viewing experience can often feel like piecing a puzzle together, or a build-up to something bigger. What’s really great about the series’ overall structure is there are also clear-cut mini-arcs where the characters take breaks between each adventure before moving on to the next, so it never feels unsatisfying. Episode 12 is technically one of the “break” episodes, but it does much to cleverly build anticipation for Season 2.

The most urgent question from Episode 12 of Vanitas is undoubtedly what happened to Noe. When Vanitas discovers that Ruthven intentionally let Jeanne invite him on a date, he immediately realizes Noe is in danger. But when he returns, he only finds a sleeping Noe half on the floor.

What neither one knows is that Ruthven had already hypnotized Noe and forced him to swear to obey for one time -- no matter what he asks -- and then made Noe forget this vow.  Episode 11 showed Jeanne under some kind of order but she can’t remember who made it, so this seems like the exact same situation for Noe. This is the biggest potential time bomb that may explode in Season 2. There is no telling what Ruthven will ask, and worse yet, there's no way to prevent it because no one actually realizes its existence.

The Season 1 finale also reveals that Ruthven planned to kill Noe at first, but changed his mind due to the concern over Noe’s teacher, the Shapeless One. This suggests the Shapeless One -- whom Ruthven calls a monster -- may be at least equal to or even more powerful than Ruthven. That said, the dialogue here also hints that leaving Noe alive could be Ruthven’s biggest downfall in the future.

Another unpredictable factor in The Case Study of Vanitas is Roland, who now knows not all vampires are evil like he was led to believe by the church. His colleague Olivier senses he is starting to doubt the church’s teachings and clumsily threatens to harm his family, but Roland returns the gesture with an even more thinly veiled threat. Their conversation shows how powerful Roland truly is  -- according to his own estimation, he can take on four or more paladins at once. But his mind may be even more dangerous; he is not a blind believer of God, but rather what he believes to be true. This makes him a wild card who could be on any side of a fight.

Most importantly, the Season 1 finale sets up the next adventure for Vanitas and Noe: the “Beast of Gevaudan” (a real-life murderous creature in French history), a wolf-like beast that used to brutally murder women and children and has recently reemerged to kill five people. The beast is theorized to be a curse-bearing vampire, and as we saw in Episode 6 , when a cursed vampire is too far gone, their appearance will change to a beast-like creature. Vanitas and Noe leave Paris to investigate, a great way to conclude Season 1 since the series began with both of them coming into Paris.

But the most intriguing reveal about this beast is at the end credit scene, when a white-haired girl appears in the snowy mountains with the Charlatan holding her. She claims to want to make her vengeance echo across the land in Gevaudan. This means the beast is definitely connected to the Charlatan, who seems to be controlled or is at least allied with this mysterious girl, whose name is Chloe according to the credits. This is the biggest revelation of Episode 12, and leaves the most unanswered questions. Given  The Case Study of Vanitas ' penchant for slowly resolving mysteries , it will probably take an entire season for everything to be fully resolved.

There are many other smaller set-ups too, such as the introduction of a new pink-haired character named Astolfo, who, despite looking effeminate, is male. There's also Noe’s strange obsession with Vanitas’ blood, and a full exposition of Noe’s mind-reading power that will surely become important later on. All these questions and more will hopefully be answered in The Case Study of Vanitas Season 2.

Who is the Strongest Character in the Case Study of Vanitas?

Who are the strongest characters in The Case Study of Vanitas?

The Case Study of Vanitas anime

Published: Feb 28, 2022, 12:05 Updated: Mar 01, 2022, 9:10

The Case Study of Vanitas might be one of the anime season's best-looking anime , but there's action there too.

Table of Contents

2) noé archiviste, 3) jean jacques chastel, 5) dominique de sade, 6) roland fortis, 7) astolfo granatum, 8) lord ruthven, 9) chloé d' apchiers, 10) queen faustina/naenia.

True to its shonen roots, the show, which is based on Jun Mochizuki's ongoing manga of the same name , features plenty of stylized battles that are fun and tense to watch. Featuring overpowered vampires, humans, and monsters. But who are the strongest characters in The Case Study of Vanitas?

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas

As the human of the group, the titular Vanitas, who derives his name from an old vampire whose grimoire he now uses, isn't as physically strong as others in this list. While he introduces himself as "an average human being," however, he's revealed to be anything but. Equipped with a cursed grimoire, Vanitas is capable of curing vampires that would otherwise be beyond saving.

Vanitas prefers to avoid fights. Instead, he uses his intellect to face vampires whose true names have been corrupted, while others do the fighting around him, but many vampires would have to be eliminated if not for his use of the book of Vanitas. In a world of overpowered shonen protagonists, it's refreshing to see a character do their fighting with a book. And when he does have to fight, he's quite skilled with a dagger too!

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-1

Noé isn't the most strong in the series, as he's beaten up or captured a few times over the course of the series, but he can be pretty awesome in battle. As a vampire, he's equipped with enhanced speed and strength. If possible, he will try to befriend his foes to avoid fighting them, but he will land some blows when he must.

As is the case with Vanitas, Noé's most interesting abilities are intellectual, however. Noé is a member of the Archiviste clan and endowed with the ability to access other people's memories by drinking their blood. This has been the source of interesting flashbacks and insights throughout the anime.

While not a very powerful vampire in himself, Jean-Jacques spread some terror as the Beast of Gédauvan in his attempt to protect his beloved Chloé D' Apchier. While bearing the malnomen of the Beast, his powers included shapeshifting and as well as speedier healing than most vampires can achieve.

At the end of the Beast arc, Jean-Jacques chooses to have his true name restored, and rely on his regular vampire strength to keep himself and Chloé safe.

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-3

Jeanne is also known as the Hellfire Witch, which already suggests she's not to be messed with! Like most vampires, she has enhanced speed, endurance, and strength, and she's strongest than most due to her combat training, leaving the two main characters impressed after their first encounter. Moreover, a pair of crimson gauntlets, known as Carpe Diem, allows her to deal increased damage.

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-4

Dominque de Sade can be a menace in battle, being proficient in knife throwing and sword-fighting. She's very agile, which makes for impressive acrobatics, while she's also able to manipulate ice, which she shapes into ice waves or shards.

Roland is a human, so he's not naturally endowed with superhuman speed or fast healing. As a Chasseur, he uses perfromance-enhancing drugs when battling against vampires, which can make him a difficult opponent. He can cause real damage with Durandal, his weapon of choice, which can be used as one entity or separate, to accommodate long-range and close-range combat both. Thankfully, like Noé, he can also be open to dialogue and make unlikely friends, which tones down the damage.

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-6

Astrolfo is only in his teens, but the anger he fosters against vampires, paired with his paladin training makes him one of the most difficult opponents in the anime. Like Roland, he has access to performance-enhancing tonics, but, unlike him, he tends to abuse them in order to keep fighting for longer, which occasionally causes him to pass out in battle. His weapon of choice, Louisette, is one of the most prominent and scary ones to fight against.

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-7

So far, Ruthven hasn't been seen unleashing his rage very often, but when he does, things can get scary. Ruthven has shown himself capable of knocking out everyone in the room, including Jeanne and Noé, who aren't powerless themselves.

In the past, Ruthven was rather idealistic about human and vampire relationships, but this ended abruptly when his attempts to bring them together fail. In the narrative present, he has aligned himself with Charlatan, making him a particularly frightening foe.

Despite her youthful appearance, Chloé d' Apchiers is the oldest vampire in the anime, and she has definitely picked up some skills along the way. Her endless youth comes with enhanced strength that allows her to overpower vampires with adult bodies, including Noé and even Augustus Ruthven.

As is the case with other characters in the series, especially Vanitas, much of her power comes from her dedication to research. However, her desire to become a normal human eventually led her to a dark path, as she adopted the malnomen "Millie" which gave her the ability to manipulate gravity, create sealed spaces made of her memories, and create time loops that bend reality.

With her true name restored, Chloé loses many of these powers, as these were associated with her descent to a dark path, but her research and physical strength will hopefully still leave her well-equipped to face dangers yet to come.

who-is-the-strongest-character-in-the-case-study-of-vanitas-9

Queen Faustina, who has been corrupted into the malnomen Naenia, is the source of many of the problems characters encounter in Season 1 of The Case Study of Vanitas. Now a mysterious entity without physical form, Naenia is responsible for the corruption of many vampires, who would end up beyond saving if not for the book of Vanitas.

Naenia's strength lies in her manipulation of vampires' minds, as she uses their worst memories and regrets to coax them into giving up their true names, thus corrupting them.
