In a country as diverse and dynamic as India, recognizing acts of bravery is not only a matter of national pride but also an essential component of fostering a culture of heroism and selflessness.
Thesis Statement: This essay will delve into the history, categories, and significance of Indian Gallantry Awards, highlighting their role in honoring and perpetuating acts of bravery, inspiring future generations, and strengthening the bonds of unity and courage in the nation.
Historical Origins and Development of Indian Gallantry Awards:
The origins of Indian Gallantry Awards can be traced back to the colonial era when India was under British rule. The British Crown established several awards to honor acts of bravery by Indian soldiers and civilians. One of the earliest such awards was the Indian Order of Merit, instituted in 1837, which recognized gallantry and distinguished service by Indian soldiers in the British Indian Army. This marked the beginning of a formal recognition system for acts of valor in the subcontinent.
In 1911, the British government introduced the Victoria Cross (VC) for India, which was the highest military award for gallantry and valor, akin to the VC for British and Commonwealth soldiers. It was awarded to Indian soldiers who displayed exceptional courage in the face of the enemy during World War I and other conflicts.
After India gained independence in 1947, there was a need to establish a system of gallantry awards that was reflective of the country’s sovereignty and values. As a result, the Indian government introduced a new set of awards, which included the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) for acts of bravery in the armed forces, the Ashoka Chakra for acts of valor by civilians and military personnel not involved in direct combat, and the Mahavir Chakra and Kirti Chakra for acts of bravery of lesser order.
Over the years, there have been significant changes and reforms in the Indian Gallantry Awards system to ensure its continued relevance and inclusivity. Some notable developments include:
- Expansion of Categories : The introduction of various awards for acts of bravery in different situations, such as the Shaurya Chakra for acts of bravery not involving the enemy, and the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry for exceptional valor by police officers.
- Inclusion of Civilians : The system has evolved to include civilians who demonstrate extraordinary courage, ensuring that bravery is not limited to the armed forces alone.
- Streamlining of Procedures : Efforts have been made to streamline the nomination and selection process for the awards, making it more transparent and efficient.
- Posthumous Awards : The recognition of posthumous acts of bravery, where the recipient has made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.
- Incorporation of Modern Contexts : The awards have been adapted to recognize acts of bravery in modern contexts, such as counter-terrorism operations and peacekeeping missions.
Overall, the Indian Gallantry Awards have transformed over the years from a colonial-era recognition system to a modern and comprehensive set of honors that reflect India’s commitment to honoring acts of valor and bravery across diverse fields and circumstances. These awards continue to inspire and motivate individuals to demonstrate exceptional courage and selflessness in service to the nation.

During republic day and independence day, the gallant soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our country are honored through gallantry awards. When we discuss the bravery of soldiers who won ParamVir chakra, Captain Vikram Batra comes to mind first.
His life was lost while he fought fearlessly for the protection of his nation during the Kargil war. Through his courage and leadership skills, he brought victory to the Kargil war. His Paramvir chakra award was presented on 15th August, the 52nd Independence Day of India.
My view of life has been profoundly altered by his indomitable spirit, fearlessness, dignity, and sacrifice. A true ideal soldier, he was always willing to serve the nation at any time and in any situation. I have learned to be kind because of his kindness in supporting others during difficult times.
I have learned how to stay focused in tough times because of his positive outlook on life and calm demeanor. As a soldier in the Indian armed forces, he has shown us the importance of leading an honorable life.
All of us strive for some goal in life that we hope to achieve one day with consistent work and dedication. As a result of following the life journey and positive attitude of my role model Vikram Batra, my aspiration is to become a successful soldier and serve our nation.
Because I have a strong desire to do something for my motherland and people, I would be honored to protect my nation from enemies. When I can contribute to the people of my country, I will feel fulfilled. According to my understanding, I am responsible for building a protective wall near my country’s borders.
My daily routine has been influenced by the discipline and well-organized lifestyle of soldiers. As a result of such hardships and difficulties, all soldiers become fully responsible for doing their duty professionally. Soldiers must always remain focused on their duties no matter what.
Having a keen awareness of everything around me is an invaluable trait of a soldier. Another reason for my inspiration is Captain Vikram Batra’s complete dignity in all circumstances. While fulfilling all his responsibilities as a soldier, he acted as a loyal friend and leader.
Fighting for his nation had never crossed his mind. He inspired me to become a soldier because of his courage, positive attitude, and sacrifice rather than pursuing any other career path. For all the soldiers who have chosen the life of a soldier to fight and protect their country, I have always had a deep respect for them. As a result of all these reasons, I feel proud of my decision to join the armed forces as a career option.
Conclusion:
It is well known that those who choose to be soldiers live a life of dignity, honor, sacrifice, and unavoidable duty. As a soldier for your country, it is a necessity to always keep these reasons in mind. As a soldier, it is also my responsibility to protect my country and reach a place where no enemy can threaten us.
Captain Vikram Batra’s philosophy will guide me to becoming a superior soldier and fighting for my country in any circumstance. I want my motherland to be safe from enemies at all costs. So, I want to join the Indian army in order to dedicate my life to the nation and to work selflessly for its people.

Meet Mitali Madhumita: First Woman Officer To Receive A Gallantry Award
Image: YouTube Screenshot
Twenty-sixty of February 2010. Early in the morning, Kabul woke up to a deafening noise—a huge blast and gunfire. Among them was Major Mitali Madhumita, who was on a United Nations’ mission in Kabul. The first thing she thought was to check on her colleagues’ safety, as was the norm then in Kabul. When she received no reply, she called others, only to find out there was a suicide bomber attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul.
Madhumita ran to the spot for aid, as there was no vehicular movement following the attack. To her horror, she found most of the colleagues were injured, bullets were flying, and grenade blasts were happening. She did what she was trained to do as her duty, jumped in to rescue people, unarmed. She saved as many as 19 lives, including seven Indians, trapped under the debris, and mobilised local assistance to seek medical help.
For this sheer display of grit and valour beyond the call of duty, Major Madhumita was conferred with the Sena Medal for Gallantry, becoming the first woman recipient of the award. She continues to remain the only woman to have received it.
Image: Twitter
She told a portal that when receiving the award, the thoughts that crossed her mind were of her two colleagues who were martyred in that attack, despite fighting bravely.
Coming from a family of educationists in Orissa, Mdhumita’s mother wanted her to become a lecturer like her mother, but she chose the Army and joined in 2000. She faced her own set of trials and tribulations when her request for a permanent commission was denied since she had joined under the Short Service Commission, which allows the officer to work for a period of five to 15 years. She fought that battle until the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Lt Col Madhumita (her rank had risen).
As she said to the portal, “India is a great country, I am very proud to be Indian. We as soldiers do our duty to the best we can do, and we are here to safeguard the nation all the time, so you can peacefully rest, all the time.” Also Read: Meet Maharashtra’s First Woman Fighter Pilot: Antra Mehta From Nagpur
